CBD festivities await... It’s fair to say it’s been a tough year for businesses – big and small – in Tauranga’s city centre. With a city under transformation has come a lot less foot-

traffic pounding the pavements and scouring the CBD’s offerings in terms of hospitality, retail, businesses and services. However, Downtown Tauranga’s new

manager Genevieve Whitson – only in the job about six weeks – has got busy fast! She’s on a mission to turn the fortunes around for our CBD and its businesses

– first by drawing people back into the city with what she calls some irresistible Christmas activations before December 25. Read more on page 18. Photo: John Borren.

This week Jim Bunny takes a break, and we bring our Letters to the Editor to page 2. Enjoy!

We must start to limit our wants!

Global warming is not that new of a phenomenon. It has been known to scientists and people of west London for at least 100 years. In the 19th and early20th centuries the upper Thames used to freeze over and people used to skate on it. There were ice skating cafes along the Thames where skaters could get hot drinks and snacks without taking their skates off. After about 1928 the upper Thames stopped freezing over – not sure of the exact date – so skaters lost their skating venue and some of the care owners went bust. I heard this on NZ National Radio some years ago. Perhaps we should look to the Australian bush aboriginals for guidance as they have few possessions and take little from the land, whereas we Westerners all drive cars and are obsessed with accumulating manufactured goods that are rarely used but have cause heat and fumes put into the atmosphere in their manufacture. I’d say virtually everyone on earth is contributing to global warming. We all must start to limit our wants. Ken Jones, Katikati.

A potential death trap for the elderly...

Edgecumbe Rd from Fourth Ave to Eleventh Ave is a potential death trap for elderly pedestrians. There is not one pedestrian crossing on this stretch of road compared to the plethora of crossings for pedestrians – with lights – on the almost-finished Cameron Rd covering the same area. Zillions have been spent on a pedestrian crossing for cyclists at the entrance to Bethlehem – why not spend some on making Edgecumbe Rd safer for pedestrians? I have written in the past to Tauranga City Council regarding the speed which traffic moves down this road and was told only 20 per cent of the traffic are ‘outliers’ – this is jargon for travelling at speeds

Are they stark raving mad?

Re: ‘SH2’s lights for Christmas’, page 3, The Weekend Sun, December 1, 2023). I’ve just read this article and learned that the Tauranga council is going to turn on these cyclist-pedestrian lights on SH2 before Christmas – and before the TNL is built and opened. Are they stark raving mad? I mean SH2 is so busy enough at normal times of the year let alone in the lead-up to Christmas time when holiday-makers come to town and locals travel round the district to visit family and friends. If they turn on the lights before Christmas – with no alternative rout such as the new TNL – can you imagine the traffic build-up? It will be chaos! I won’t be coming into Tauranga from Katikati if the lights get switched on – even though

I’d like to support all the struggling business there. Don’t get me wrong – I love the Wairoa cycleway project but I’m with WBOP councillor Margaret Murray-Benge in saying that council should only turn these lights on once the TNL is opened and the SH2 becomes a district road. K Morland, Katikati. Editor’s note: Tauranga City Council announced on Wednesday, December 13, it has opened the final leg – the last 800m section between Wairoa Bridge and Bethlehem – of the 19km Ōmokoroa to Tauranga cycleway. TCC says: “Drivers are asked to be alert to the new roading design, including the crossing, which when activated by cyclists will pause traffic for around 20 seconds, as well as the reduced speed limit”.

above the limit. If pedestrian crossings are beyond the realms of the council’s vision could we at least have some speed bumps, maybe shift a couple from Millers Rd to Edgecumbe Rd? I no longer cross Edgecumbe Rd while walking my dog, thus restricting both of us from a reasonable walk. Even the road crossings across the Avenues off Edgecumbe Rd are a challenge, imposing more restrictions on the less nimble amongst us. Please council do something about crossings or slowing down traffic on Edgecumbe Rd between Fourth and Eleventh Ave before someone is either badly injured or worse. Margaret Parker, Tauranga City.

Getting impossible to park in the CBD... Re: ‘Enough is enough with the paid parking’ Letters page, The Weekend Sun, November 24, 2023). Having read the letter sent in by Carole Etherington from the Mount, I have to agree it’s getting impossible to find a park in and around Tauranga CBD. I enjoy a movie at Rialto on a regular basis only to get a parking fine in the mailbox a few days later. Usually $40. So makes a day out to the movies very expensive! I like to think I’m contributing to the local economy by going to the movies and having a coffee afterwards but this is ridiculous! I hope the council can find some way around this dilemma. Michele Winchester, Ōmokoroa.

Paws on-board? Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s chair of public transport Andrew von Dadelszen and his dog ‘Betsy’. Photo: John Borren.

Pets on buses is up for public discussion down south, so would the same go up here in the north? Last week the Transport, Urban Development and Air Quality Committee of Environment Canterbury – the regional council in the garden city – supported a notice of motion to include a policy on ‘Pets on buses’ in their draft Regional Public Transport Plan. Canterbury Regional councillor Joe Davies said at the meeting: “This is an exciting step forward for our four-legged friends”. He also added: “I think it’s really important that we look at allowing pets, and specifically dogs, on our buses. This is something the community should have the right to have a say on”.

Dog lovers

So The Weekend Sun asked Bay of Plenty Regional Council – which operates our public transport system – whether it thinks allowing pets on buses would be a good idea locally. BOPRC’s public transport committee chairman Andrew Von Dadelszen says: “Conceptually, I think it’s a great idea because I’m a dog lover”. Andrew, who has always been a dog and a cat owner, says he is “receptive” of a motion of allowing pets on buses in the Bay of Plenty. However, he notes: “It needs a bit of thought to

make sure that everybody’s safe and the passengers aren’t interrupted”. “It’s not straightforward because you need to know what size is the dog? Do they need muzzles?” Currently, BOPRC only allows registered disability assistance dogs on BOP buses. BOPRC’s transport operations manager Stuart Nightingale says this policy is designed to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers, including those with specific health concerns. “Our strategy involves ongoing optimisation of our services, embracing technology, and moving towards more sustainable practices.”

Transport priorities

Andrew says getting our pets on buses “wouldn’t be my highest priority right now”. “My priority is actually to find ways to get people to improve our services, to give our customers a good customer experience to get more people on the buses.” However, The Sun asked Andrew if he thinks allowing pets on buses would be an encouragement for people to use public transport? “It would,” says Andrew. “If we can find a way in favour of small dogs, especially, being allowed on buses it’s something that I’d be very interested in to see how others get on with [in regards to] what requirements there are so that all our passengers feel safe. Because you can’t do something that satisfies one person, but gives fear to others – so it’s not straightforward.” Georgia Minkhorst

New $122m aquatic centre for Tauranga Tauranga’s Memorial Park will undergo a $128m upgrade including a new aquatic centre featuring three hydroslides.

Baypark to Bayfair night works The final road surface is going down on all Baypark to Bayfair Link roads. Road and lane closures will be in place between 7pm and 6am and will vary from night to night across the site. This includes State Highway 2 Tauranga Eastern Link and access to and from Matapihi. Follow signposted detours, allow extra time and drive with caution through the area. Night works will continue in early 2024. Check journeys.nzta.govt.nz before you travel and allow extra time for your journeys. We thank you for your patience. nzta.govt.nz/baylink

Baypark to Bayfair Link

The aquatics centre with bombing pools, splash pad, a toddler pool, and eight indoor 25m swimming lanes and two outdoor lanes will cost $122.25m. Indoor courts would be built at another location in the city at a cost of $25m. Tauranga City Council commissioners approved the $153.25m upgrades at a meeting on Monday. The park hosts the city’s only outdoor lane pool that was built in 1958 and the nearby Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre is a multi-court indoor facility built in 1965. Both facilities are coming to the end of their useful lives. The QEYC was classified as high risk after a seismic investigation. If the building were to remain it would need $128m to bring it up to standard. Commissioner Shadrach Rolleston grew up in Tauranga and used the pool and courts at the central Tauranga park. “The community’s used to having those facilities in that location. “They’ve been well used for a long time.”

Alleviate pressure

The new aquatic centre would alleviate pressure on the current facilities in the city, says BayVenues operation general manager Tina Harris-Ririnui. “Our network is at capacity.” Council-controlled organisation BayVenues manages Tauranga’s sport and aquatic facilities. Tina says BayWave in Mount Maunganui is over capacity. “The lap pool and all the other spaces in BayWave are heaving. So it is punching well above its weight.” The biggest growth areas are water polo and synchronised swimming, which need deeper water that would be accommodated in the new facility.

“It’s going to meet the needs of structured sport. “It’s going to meet the needs of leisure and recreation. “It’s one of those pools that will enable all walks of life to utilise that pool and utilise it really, really well.”

Ōtūmoetai pool

Another pool in the council network that will soon need to be decommissioned is Ōtūmoetai. The new facility would replace this and better meet the needs of the community, says Tina. Council staff recommended the commission choose option three for the aquatics centre that included two hydroslides and the 25m pool would have eight lanes outdoors with two indoors. It would have cost $107.4m The commission opted for option two that had the eight lanes indoors and commission chair Anne Tolley wanted to add the two extra hydroslides to this option at an extra cost of $2.4m. Projected ticket sales for three hydroslides was $32,064. With one it was $21,962 in the first year of opening. The revenue for three slides would be $161,000. As part of the $128m upgrade $6m will be spent on enhancing parking, upgrading the play area and adding a wetland play zone, a nature play trail and a new swing area. The open spaces would also be improved with seating and picnic areas as well as all-weather path access. A youth play zone with features for skate users would also be added to the park. The new aquatic facility is expected to open in late-2027 and the cost has been budgeted into the 2021-2031 Long Term Plan. Public Interest Journalism funded through NZ On Air

Transformation underway

A new gangway, pontoon and improved landscaping with a viewing platform are part of the transformation project to Tauranga’s old Beacon Wharf. The wharf is undergoing the major transformation now, with work expected to be finished by next spring, according to Tauranga City Council. TCC city development and partnerships general manager Gareth Wallis says the project is part of council’s wider waterfront transformation plans to help revitalise the city centre. “The new pontoon will provide easier access to the inner harbour for recreational boats, kayaks, paddleboards and a place to enjoy fishing.” Gareth says the old wharf, situated below the old Taumata Kawhawai pa site, served as a hub for railway and coastal trading during the mid-1900s. “With the growth of Port of Tauranga, the wharf ’s purpose changed more towards boat maintenance. Eventually the structure deteriorated, resulting in its closure for an extended period and eventual demolition in July this year. “Once the Beacon Wharf upgrade is complete next year, people will once again be able to enjoy better access to one of our city’s greatest assets – Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour.” Gareth expects the new wharf to be a drawcard for recreational boaties in particular, adding to the many other exciting projects

happening along the city centre waterfront to make it an even greater place to visit and for our community to feel proud of. Pāpāmoa fisherman Andrew Hill says he is “really excited” about the prospect of taking his daughter to the new Beacon Wharf when it’s finished. “It’s a good fishing spot that’s going to be more accessible. “I’ve been hearing about the waterfront upgrades so it’s very encouraging to think we’ll be using the new wharf by this time next year. It’s a nice excuse for us to cross the bridge over to the city centre.” Further south along the waterfront, council is already working on a ‘living seawall’ that includes 100 water pods specially designed to attract marine plants and animals to the water’s edge along The Strand. Work is also underway to create a new boardwalk along the southern end of The Strand. Guided by the Tauranga Moana Waterfront Plan, these projects join several others that will deliver a better waterfront experience from the start of Dive Crescent right along to The Strand extension. Precious cargo of memories on road-trip Tauranga man Scotty Harvey is taking ‘Jono’ and ‘Roger’ on a 2500km South Island road-trip over Christmas. A spiritual one. Because ‘Roger’ died in 1995 and ‘Jono’, his brother, in 2011. Both tragically to suicide. The boys’ Mum had scrawled their names on the bonnet of Scotty’s ‘mental health automobile’ as a little memorial. You will have seen the ‘mobile’ around Tauranga – a garish 1997

Toyota Camry with 277,068km on its fluorescent wheels, and patched together with messages of hope and love, suicide statistics and inspirational words written by people with, or touched by, mental health issues. People like ‘Roger’ and ‘Jono’s’ Mum. “When I told her they were coming on holiday with me, she just wept,” says Scotty. A mother grieves for her sons. By now Scotty will probably be

parked up under a sun umbrella somewhere on the Desert Rd with his signs – ‘Your mental health OK? Come and have a yarn’ and ‘You OK bro? stop 4 a yarn’. The former social worker who lives with bipolar – extreme mood swings mental from emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and dreadful lows (depression) – is a kind of mental health missionary, engaging with anyone and everyone about their mental wellbeing. On the side of the road, with his signs and those ears ready to listen, all the way to Stewart Island and return. “If I can stop just one person from beating their

wife, from self-harming or suicide, and make them feel human again, alive again, then it will have been worthwhile.” And because his roadside clinics have been so successful, Scotty is ramping up his services. “Last week I resigned from my job. Why would I want to sit in an office when I am needed at the pit face?” So the 52-year-old Kojak bald, bespectacled and heavily tattooed Scotty is taking his mental health evangelist out on the road full-time. His car and its messages are the magnet – ‘You are lovely, you are worthy, you make someone’s day better’, ‘You are not alone’, ‘Family and

friends do love you’. Even his body is a billboard for the cause. ‘R U OK bro?’ is inked on his calf. People would laugh and joke when they saw the car at the supermarket. “Then someone wouldn’t smile and I would ask them if they’re okay...” For Scotty, it’s a calling, it’s God’s work; it’s a passion. “I live and breathe mental health. I see it and hear it every day and my biggest problem is the system is broken.”

Won’t Scotty put mental health aside for Christmas and relax? “Exactly why I am doing the roadtrip. To help some who might be alone on Christmas Day and needs to talk. I could be that someone who could make a difference.” He’s taken the back seat out of the Camry for a mattress for a night’s kip. That’s if he doesn’t sleep under the stars. He has $4500 in his kitty for food and petrol, his listening ears are pricked up and he’s packed those cherished memories of Roger and Jono. Scotty’s mental health roadshow rolled out of town on Wednesday, on an odyssey around

the South Island. He’ll be back in a month. The weekend ‘R U OK Bro?’ roadside mental health clinics have become a seven-day service.

Enjoy ‘Carols on the Lawn’ at Gate Pā A festive gift from the pandemic is returning to St George’s Anglican Church at Gate Pā this Sunday afternoon – a relaxed outdoor carolsinging service. “One of the gifts of Covid-19 was having to take our carol service outside in 2021,” says Reverend John Hebenton. “[From this] We discovered the joy of gathering on the back lawn between the church and the Gate Pā Domain and offering this family-friendly event in a much more relaxed way.”

As such – St George’s ‘Carols on the Lawn’ afternoon is happening this Sunday, December 17, at 4pm. “With so many of the big Christmas events being in Tauranga town, we welcome everyone from our community and beyond to this relaxed occasion sitting under the old oak tree,” says John. “This year will be a celebration of carols ancient and modern, from Aotearoa and far away. “Our Christmas choir has been rehearsing some special carols for a few weeks under the careful direction of Bonnie Hebenton. And there will be lots of old favourites for

everyone to sing.” With a limited amount of seating provided, families are welcome to bring their own blankets and chairs to enjoy the event. “After the singing has finished a free delicious supper will be served for all. “Stay and have a chat, and a Christmas mince pie,” says John. “If wet, we will move inside and use our beautiful church.” St George’s ‘Carols on the Lawn’ is at 4pm, Sunday, December 17, at 1 Church St, Gate Pa, Tauranga. After the success of last year’s inaugural event, the EVES Open – ITF World Tennis Tour: Tauranga is returning to the sky-blue hard courts of Pāpāmoa Tennis Club from December 17-23. Entry is free for spectators. This is an international tournament for men and women with official ATP and WTA world ranking points up for grabs. Kirsten says with Pāpāmoa Tennis Club being so close and accessible to the school, this opportunity could see many new young players interested in getting involved. “Already the tennis equipment has been well used by the students.” Peter says tennis is a great sport for kids to play and Pāpāmoa Primary School students are already displaying many fundamental hand-eye coordination skills in the sport. “We were able to connect with local kids who are already tennis club members as well as kids who have never played tennis before.”

Te Puna’s ‘heart and soul’ remembered A woman of conviction who championed her community has left Te Puna in a better place than she found it.

Jo Gravit – a former Western Bay of Plenty councillor – passed away December 4, nine days after her husband of 60 years Peter. Jo was a WBOPDC councillor from 2001-2010 but remained

an active member of the Te Puna community right up until her cancer diagnosis in September. When a councillor she was also an Ōmokoroa Community Board member, and Community Coordination Committee and the Sustainable Communities Committee chair, and part of community volunteer organisation Te Puna Heartland. Bowden says once Jo stepped down from council she really rolled up her sleeves and relished the opportunity to get fully involved in the organisation’s work. “She was Te Puna’s heart and soul.” Jo rallied the community to ensure Te Puna hall was replaced after it had to be demolished for State Highway 2-Te Puna Rd upgrades. The late octogenarian also ensured Te Puna had an emergency response plan and a community management plan. “She was a great believer in practical activity,” says Beth. Not only would she get things done but she had a way of soothing ruffled feathers, says Beth. “She was always right, but she would always smooth the waters so that people thought they were right too.”

Councillor days

Councillor Margaret Murray-Benge, who served two terms on council with Jo, says she was thoughtful, caring, and a good networker.

Never stopped

“She never stopped caring and working for her community. She’s a perfect example of a woman who stood up and participated, and a great example to other women to follow on and do the same.” Born in 1941, Jo grew up in Manawatū. She was educated at Peter and Jo Gravit at their 60th Palmerston North High anniversary celebration Photo: Supplied. Councillor Don Thwaites worked with Jo on council, but the pair were friends for years prior, and he managed the Gravit orchard when Jo lived in Wellington from 1985-1999. In Wellington Jo was Federated Farmers women’s division chief executive, having managed her family’s Te Puna dairy farm before it was converted to kiwifruit. Don says Jo got Te Puna library set up at the school and the footpath on Te Puna and Armstrong Roads were laid because of her advocacy. “She was a stickler for the detail and an incredible reader. She used to read all the reports and be able to speak to everything [in council]” Don says Jo set the standard pretty high for him as a new councillor. “When the big debates had come up she loved to quote back to policy, which used to infuriate a few of the other councillors around the table who wanted to have a crack at bending rules. “She was actually known to break the odd policy herself The late Jo Gravit when she was a when it suited her, but Western Bay of Plenty councillor. Monika Marr, 90, and Forget Me Not Life Stories personal historian Kate McCarthy. Photo: John Borren.

A wonderful life preserved in pages From receiving the Benemerenti medal from the Pope, to producing her own CD at the age of 82, Monika Marr certainly has had an interesting life.

Now aged 90 and having lived in Mount Maunganui for more than 60 years, Monika can reminisce on all the adventures, milestones and achievements through the years in her very own book –‘Monika Marr from Matatā – My Life Story’. Born and raised in Matatā, with nine siblings, Monika left her hometown at 21 years old in a ship to Vancouver, Canada. That was big news back in the day for the sleepy coastal town and made it into the ‘Whakatane Beacon’, says Monika. “I just thought that’s what you do when you get a job. You save some money and you go,

and I did. It was wonderful.” When it comes to her proudest life achievement’s it is about people and service. “I had a wonderful husband, four lovely children – that makes me proud.” And of course being presented with the Benemerenti medal from the Pope – an honorary decoration for long and exceptional service to the church – is another stand-out moment. “I worked in the parish for 60 years just because I loved doing what I did.” A brilliant songstress her whole life, Monika produced her own CD at age 82 too! “My mum and dad sang, and I can sing songs from the First World War because my dad was in the First World War.” Recently Monika had her life story recorded and was presented with her book produced by Forget Me Not Life Stories. What are you putting off? Callout for blood donations

“Do not wait; the time will never be ‘just right’. Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along” – George Herbert.

When I returned to New Zealand after being away for many years, I wasn’t clear on what my next steps would be. However, I did know I had resources and skills I could call on, and I chose to explore how to mould them in new ways. It was this knowledge, even as I was uncertain, that created an excitement and encouraged me to build broader

amid holiday season

horizons and embrace the new challenges that evolved into the next chapter of my life. What are you putting off at the moment because it isn’t the right time? Or that you don’t believe you have the right resources for? Or you don’t yet think you have all the skills for? What would happen if you just took one step into the next part of your journey?

Every week, more than 250 donations are needed in the BOP region to help patients who rely on blood and blood products. Photo: supplied.

If you’d like to know more about life coaching, phone Mary Parker, The Fast Track Coach, on 021 258 2145, or visit: www.thefasttrackcoach.co.nz

The New Zealand Blood Service has almost 3000 appointments to be filled between now and the end of January in the Bay of Plenty region to meet demand during the holiday season. A total of 55,323 units of blood, plasma and platelets were issued to patients across New Zealand between December 2022 and end of January 2023. NZBS national marketing and communications manager Asuka Burge says the service is forecasting a four per cent increase during the same period this holiday season. “As people enjoy a well-earned break over summer, we tend to experience a dip in the number of people donating. However, the reality is the need for blood and plasma does not stop for those who get sick, have accidents or require ongoing treatment,” says Asuka.

A positive

“That’s why we’re asking everyone to consider their plans for the next few weeks, and please

find time to donate. An hour spent giving blood or plasma can mean the difference between life and death for someone else just a few days later. Asuka says all blood types are needed – “but right now, we’re making a special call for those who are A positive to roll up their sleeve and donate blood in the lead-up to the Christmas period”. “As one of the most common blood types in NZ, we always experience high demand for A positive blood and that looks set to continue over the coming months.”

Donate on holiday

There are 10 donor centres across NZ, and NZBS will be hosting more than 170 mobile drives across the country between now and the end of January. With people likely to be visiting different parts of Aotearoa during the holiday break, Asuka suggests downloading the NZ Blood Service Donor App so they can check their eligibility, find their nearest location to donate and book an appointment.

“Not only does the app make it easy to book an appointment, but donors are also notified when their donation is used to help a patient. “While we know people who give blood or plasma don’t do it for the kudos, it’s still a rewarding feeling when your phone beeps and you’re told that your donation has helped to save a life.” Every week, more than 250 donations are needed in the BOP region to help patients who rely on blood and blood products. “The selflessness and generosity of our donors ensures patients at their most vulnerable are able to receive the blood and blood products they need when they need them,” says Asuka. “If you’ve never donated before, now’s the perfect time to join our whanau of lifesavers. “The festive season is about giving and for someone in hospital, a blood or plasma donation will be the best gift they ever receive.” Download the NZ Blood Service Donor App, visit: www.nzblood.co.nz or call: 0800 448 325 to book an appointment to donate.

See festivities in the city, support CBD businesses Santa’s grotto has popped up on Grey St, a gingerbread house at Red Square, and oversized Christmas crackers and gift boxes, to encourage a festive feel for the city centre and get more people pounding the CBD pavement before December 25.

Downtown Tauranga, with support of Tauranga City Council, has created the festivities in the CBD to draw people into the city, to ensure families can enjoy a sense of Christmas spirit and give local businesses a pre-Christmas boost following a tough year. “It’s been a really hard year for local businesses and this activation

will support increased vibrancy and ambience, more foot traffic and in turn support an economic boost to the city centre as we lead up to Christmas,” says Downtown Tauranga’s new manager Genevieve Whitson. A Santa’s grotto complete with a Santa throne, elf cave, reindeer and abundance of Christmas decorations now meets Grey St passers-by – and, of course, Santa and his elf helper all the way from the North Pole! “Santa will be in his Grotto – at 2 Grey St – from 10am-3pm every Saturday until Christmas – and from 10am-3pm from December 18-22,” says Genevieve. “People are welcome to take photos on their own phones with Santa. The grotto is completely free –because we want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the festivities in the city centre.”

Gingerbread House

People can also pop down to Red Square and see the gingerbread house, and relive all the tales of ‘Hansel and Gretel’, for the entire month of December. Genevieve says it’s been a very collaborative project to bring Christmas to the CBD “and it’s just fantastic to see the children’s eyes light up when they walk into the grotto and see Santa and his elf and see some festive magic Downtown”. “We are really thankful to council for their support, Pacific Property Fund Ltd for providing

space on Grey St, Black Chilli and Balloon Bliss for props and decorating the space, Quality Building Services for installing the gingerbread house, crackers and gift-boxes, and Event Production Services for lighting fittings.” Now Genevieve hopes the community will come out to see the festivities. “It’s a chance to support Downtown Tauranga businesses and to see the city centre with some Christmas flair!”

A fighter jet flight could be just the ticket... perhaps just want a taste of what the jets can do. Craig says the main thing for giftpurchasers or would-be passengers to know is that each flight is tailored to each passenger. “We emphasise in the pre-flight briefing that: ‘You’re here to have fun – so we’ll make it fun by tailoring the flight to what you’re comfortable with’.

From thrill-seeking aerobatic adventures to relaxed scenic flights, FighterJets NZ offer it all. Photo: FighterJets NZ.

For the ultimate gift – one that will give the receiver an experience of a lifetime – look no further than FighterJets NZ. Craig Mossman and his team of highly experienced pilots offer passenger rides in ex-Military jets from Tauranga

Airport hangar. “The jets were primarily used for advanced weapons and pilot training, and also used for light attack. “So people who fly with us experience what it’s like to go for a ride in an actual military fighter jet.” FighterJets NZ has three very different flight offerings. Top

Gun is a 30-minute not-forthe-faint-hearted aerobatic adventure – full of loops, rolls and upside-down thrills. Thermal Recon is a 30-minute flight over Rotorua Lakes district, with spectacular views and few cheeky rolls on return. While the Buzz & Break is for those feeling a little nervous or

Kiwis are looking for experiences, not things, this Christmas... New research from Chuffed Gifts shows Kiwis are more interested making memories than cluttering their house with new items this festive season. The survey asked more than 500 Kiwis about their Christmas preferences and shopping habits and revealed 89 per cent of people would prefer the gift of an experience over a physical gift/stuff. Seventy-three per cent of experience lovers said it was because they valued making memories over things. Other reasons include spending more time with family and friends via an experience; not needing or wanting more ‘stuff’; wanting to take time out for themselves; or wanting a more sustainable/eco-conscious choice. James Fitzgerald from Chuffed Gifts says it’s great to see so many Kiwis “embracing experiences over things”. According to the data, many Kiwis struggle with what to buy. Eleven per cent said gift-giving is always a challenge, 18 per cent said it’s usually challenging, and 37 per cent said gift shopping is challenging about half the time. However 64 per cent of respondents said they are likely or extremely likely to buy an experience gift for someone else this Christmas, and 79 per cent said they’re likely or extremely likely to in the next 12 months. “This signals that giving great gifts is relevant year-round.”

Chuffed Gifts make experience gifting far more memorable with cool physical gifts and the choice from up to 150 experiences for the recipient.

F LO R I S T

“We haven’t had anyone yet who hasn’t absolutely loved it,” says Craig. “People have different tolerances... some are adrenaline junkies wanting the full fighter-jet experience. Others want a relaxed scenic flight, while some want the Top Gun, so we can accommodate all requests.” To book a flight, see FighterJets NZ’s advert on this page.

News from Bay of Plenty Regional Council December 2023

Ngā mihi maioha ki a koutou!

Thank you!

Over the last six months, we’ve spoken to hundreds of people across the region about potential changes to how land and freshwater are managed in regional rules.

Check out our regional parks this summer

Community feedback closed on 30 September. The feedback received is being used to help shape the draft options that will be presented to your elected regional councillors for consideration. To read a summary of what you have told us so far head to participate.boprc.govt.nz/Essential-Freshwater

Pāpāmoa Hills Did you know that we manage two beautiful regional parks? Pāpāmoa Hills, located between Pāpāmoa and Te Puke, and Onekawa Te Mawhai Regional Park located on the Ōhiwa Harbour headland. Both parks boast breath-taking views, great walks, natural beauty, and beaches nearby. Perfect for a day trip between Christmas feasting and family time or just to get out into nature and get your heart rate up. The rich cultural heritage of each park is shared through signage while Pāpāmoa Hills’ new visitor experience delves deep into the history and stories of the landscape complete with a 3D map. Swimming this summer? We are spoilt for choice when picking a spot to cool, but not all our lakes, rivers and beaches are safe to swim. Our technicians work hard over the summer period, collecting and testing water samples from more than 95 sites each week. This data is shared with LAWA and Toi Te Ora, who rate the ‘swim-ability’ of the water and share this information with the community. Check your favourite spots ‘swim-ability’ here: boprc.govt.nz/safe-swimming-areas

Woolly nightshade wipeout! We’re running a promotion this summer to encourage property owners to control Woolly nightshade. Not only does it crowd out other plants, but it also poisons the soil preventing the establishment of other less hardy species, including native plant seedlings. Our team can give advice on how to control it, provide a practical demonstration and/or supply you with your own wipeout pack containing a folding saw, cut and paste gel, and gardening gloves. If you have Woolly nightshade on your property, call our customer services team on 0800 884 880 to register your interest and one of our team will be in touch in the new year.

Seven of our Rotorua Te Arawa lakes have also been significantly impacted by this year’s heavy rainfall. Visit the Rotorua Lakes Council website for details of the affected lakes and the water hazards that you need to be aware of. If you do come across floating debris please contact the Harbourmaster team on 0800 5 KNOTS (0800 55 66 87)

Have a safe and happy summer from all of us at Regional Council Our offices are closing for the holidays at 5pm on Friday 22 December and re-open on Monday 8 January 2024 at 8.30am.

During this time, you can call our 24/7 Pollution Hotline on 0800 884 883, or contact our duty Harbourmaster on 0800 5 KNOTS (0800 55 66 87).

Wander through a chamber of sound Immerse yourself in a captivating musical feast of classical meets contemporary at RimuFest’s ‘Wanderlust - A Chamber Journey through Musical Landscapes’ next month.

Starting off the New Year with stunning instrumentals, the concert will be held on January 6 by renowned musicians Amelia Taylor, Alejandro Larumbe, Donald Maurice, Yotam Levi and Maria Mo charming the audience. Sit back and unwind as timeless sounds of violin, viola, cello and piano combine for a unique musical experience. “This is not your traditional classical music programme. These works are more contemporary sounding and have influences from all around the world, from Greek and flamenco to folk music,” says violinist Alejandro Larumbe. What’s more special is that all the music played in the concert has been composed in our country. “It’s all New Zealand music, which is

something really exciting about it,” says violinist Amelia Taylor. “There’s not many programmes that have all New Zealand music.” The evening will include pieces by awardwinning classical composers such as Claire Cowan and John Psathas. “John is from Greek heritage and his music has ecstatic rhythms. I think people are going to be rocking their heads to this program,” says Alejandro. He adds: “This is going to not only appeal to people who want classical music, but also to people who just want to know more and want to give it a try… we invite everyone to come and enjoy this evening with us!” Held at St Peter’s Anglican Church, 141A Oceanview Rd, Mount Maunganui, the concert will start 6.30pm on Saturday, January 6. A musical smorgasbord Okay. We’re approaching the ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’ end of the year. Don’t panic!

at: sunlive.co.nz/news/332032-fightingcancer-without-medical-insurance.html? In less urgent news, I can

I have a few things to share this week. Look upon it as a loose smorgasbord containing items of varying importance. We’ll start with something of actual importance. I’ve written about Shirley Ryder more than a few times over the years, since she has been a hyperactive member of Tauranga’s musical community. She has written, recorded and released several albums, both under her own name and with bandmate Graeme Hardaker as The Shirleybyrds. She has written books; she created a magazine-style internet interview series; even a full-concept musical complete with video. So if you follow the column you’ll Shirley Ryder is well-known in Tauranga’s know of Shirley. Unfortunately, this musical community. Photo: supplied. latest news is not cheerful: Shirley’s ovarian cancer has returned and report that one person has finally she has started a Givealittle page to raise discovered how to make money on money for Avastin treatment. Spotify! Yep, that deserves an exclamation I’m not going to say much here, I just mark! Japanese ambient composer refer you to this excellent piece by Sun Michiru Aoyama does it by uploading a Media’s own Rosalie Liddle Crawford, new album every day. which has links to the Givealittle page,

Each album lasts 20 minutes and 28 seconds and comprises of eight tracks – each two minutes 33 seconds long. The latest, as I write this, was ‘Ori’, from December 11. Before that was ‘Bb’ from December 10. Inexplicably, ‘Loou’ from December 9 has only seven tracks and is thus 17 minutes and 55 seconds long. It’s the only exception. He has been doing this for more than two years; income derives from being chosen for the many ambient playlists created by Spotify, such as ‘Weightless’, ‘Ambient Dreamscapes’, ‘Spa Treatment’’ and so on. He now makes roughly $5000 a month, following a disciplined routine of composing and creating for nine hours each day followed by two hours of uploading... And, yes, I checked out a bunch of them. Yes, they are actually all different. And, dare I say it – as far as smooth ambient instrumentals go – not bad. ******************************* Hear Winston’s latest Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4wM TdAEuVRFdTaTW7VAOxQ?si=3b2a7f 595ac948c3

Christmas Lights event a sight to behold! Changepoint Church has been running their Christmas Lights event for more than two decades – and this year they’re ramping it up to provide an incredible Christmas experience for all ages. “The sheer quantity of lights used on the building is a sight to behold, featuring more than 150,000 bulbs and a beautifully lit star standing high atop the roof,” says Chris Booth from Changepoint Church. Since 2010 Changepoint has included an incredible creative multimedia presentation as part of the event and this year is no different with a brand-new stunning presentation that is sure to captivate. Join in with the choir in true Christmas spirit singing along to all your favourite carols. But, if singing isn’t your thing, then sit back and enjoy the free hot drink and slice while soaking up the live music in the Marquee. There are even fun games for the kids! This event runs every night, starting at 8pm until late from Saturday, December 16, to Friday, December 22. Changepoint would also like to invite you to one of their Christmas Eve services, which will have MEDIUM carols, musical items and a Christmas message. God left His fingerprints

Tauranga Churches

We know the Bible is God’s word because He left His fingerprints all over it. A little investigation reveals many examples. Here’s a less well-known one. Jesus was from the Israelite tribe of Judah. He’s called The Lion of the Tribe of Judah. He entered Jerusalem on a donkey, with a donkey colt, days before His garments were bloodied when He selflessly died on the cross for all. Many from every nation bow before Him in worship. He emphasised that loving Him meant obeying Him.

Now, uncover God’s fingerprints on the Bible. As Jacob was blessing his sons thousands of years before Christ died, he said: “Judah… Your father’s children shall bow down before you.… He… lies down as a lion… And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. Binding his donkey to the vine, And his donkey’s colt… He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes (Gen.49:8-11 NKJV)”. Have you ever said you’d need to see miracles to believe? The Bible’s a verified miracle for all

to behold! I hope you didn’t miss the connections above between Jacob’s prophecy and Christ’s life, especially how wine and the blood of grapes poetically foreshadowed Christ’s blood sacrifice for you. May this example of prophetic brilliance foretelling Christ’s life in detail – coupled with many others you can easily find – cause you to put your faith in Him and give Him your obedience forever. He’ll save you from what’s coming! David Kidd, Church of God’s Love

Common good and peace for all

Despite what we might see in popular Western art, every Christmas we are invited to rejoice in the birth of a brown-skinned Middle Eastern refugee. This baby is God’s good news for all creation, God’s utter commitment to this world and all who live in it. Christmas is about God’s desire for a world where the common good is held as paramount and all flourish. In his life and

teaching, Jesus lived God’s dream for a world where the needs of the poor are placed first and where all are treated with honour and respect and given what they need to thrive. How different would this world be? Jesus was born in a land under occupation, forced from his parents’ home in Bethlehem to live as a refugee. When they did return, he lived, according to Matthew, far from home in Nazareth. Today Bethlehem and the neighbouring Aida refugee camp are walled off, still at the mercy of an occupation army. The policies of Hamas and the Israeli government have led to this devastating and tragic war. Its effects are rippling even to Aotearoa with a rise in antisemitism and Islamophobia. May our Christmas gift this year be a renewed commitment to work for God’s hope of a just Rev John Hebenton peace in which all thrive.
