top marinas for Golf, Entertainment, Scuba, Sportfishing & Gastronomy

As you plan your winter cruising, ShowBoats International has compiled some top marinas to match your passions. A few provide world-class scuba diving, sportsfishing, golf, dining and entertainment all from one base, while others.

Top for GOLF

Marina Cap Cana

There’s nothing like a round of golf on a challenging course with an ocean backdrop to work up an appetite. Many megayacht marinas come with golf courses nearby, and in the Caribbean you could make an island-hopping series of it. Marina Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic is popular with both golfers and sportsfishermen alike. Blue and white marlin arrive in huge numbers from March and stay well into the summer months, passing through the deep Mona Passage, immediately east of Cap Cana. However, you can experience the Nicklaus Signature design Punta Espada Golf Club all year round. Golfweek magazine voted it the top course in the region three years in a row, and nine of the 18 holes line the Caribbean Sea. Superyacht visitors also can choose from three restaurants and a delicatessen in the marina village, and have access to a spa, gymnasium, private beach and the Juanillo Beach Club and restaurant. October 1 sees the opening of the Cap Cana Fishing Lodge, operated by Salamander Hotels.

IGY’s Marina Papagayo and its 2,300acre residential community are spread across twin peninsulas along the stunning north Pacific coast of Costa Rica, only 30 minutes from Liberia International Airport. Fifteen of its 180 slips are dedicated to superyachts up to 180 feet in length, and visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities, such as exploring diverse natural scenery abundant with wildlife, great sportsfishing close to an area noted for record catches, year-round scuba diving and world-class surfing and golf. For a limited time, Marina Papagayo residents will enjoy access to the private Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course with clubhouse, restaurant, snack bar and a general store, and the newly opened Prieta Beach Club & Spa, featuring beachside workout facilities, multiple pools, bars and restaurants, in a dramatic, open-air setting. In The Bahamas, Albany, a 600-acre luxury resort community, just opened in October 2010. It incorporates an Ernie Els-designed, 7,400 yards, links-style championship golf course, featuring a number of scenic and challenging water features.

marina stats Practice and teaching facilities, together with four sets of tees and multiple short-game areas, provide something for everyone. The development features a state-of-the-art 71-slip superyacht marina accommodating vessels up to 240 feet. Other amenities include a fitness center with lap pool and boxing ring, a racquet complex, spa, adult pool and bar, family water park and two restaurants. Marina Puerto de la Navidad is part of Mexico’s elegant Grand Bay Hotel, Isla Navidad Resort, which covers 1,235 acres and features a 27-hole golf course, tennis ranch, spa and nightclub. The marina has a modern floating-dock system to accommodate yachts up to 180 feet, and lies in a secluded natural harbor all set against a spectacular mountain backdrop amidst lush tropical gardens. The area is popular for fishing but golfers will be bowled over by the clubhouse and course, and tequila lovers will find 200 different tequilas and an in-house cigar maker in one of the resort’s bars. In Florida, LXR Luxury Marinas Boca Raton Resort and Marina offers two championship golf courses amidst its 356 acres. Also included are a half mile of beach, a 40,000-square-foot spa, 30 award-winning clay tennis courts and a great choice of restaurants. The 32-slip marina accommodates vessels up to 170 feet.

Top for ENTERTAINMENT

It’s hard to think of a world-class superport that doesn’t offer a good variety of general entertainment, either on site or nearby. Certainly many of those listed elsewhere could fit in this section as well. However, below are a few marinas that have made the most of their natural assets, or created a few of their own. In the mid-90s, Sol Kerzner invested over $800 million to bring the long-lost city to life in the form of the Marina at Atlantis Nassau. “City” is no exaggeration of the scale of this project, which includes multiple restaurants and bars, a casino, waterpark, and aquarium. The marina features 63 superyacht slips, plus several alongside berths, with no beam restrictions, for yachts up to 220 feet. The concept went down so well in the Bahamas that there’s now an Atlantis at the Palm in Dubai. IGY’s Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, is yet another marina in the Caribbean that excels in a number of categories—47 superyacht berths, extra wide concrete docks, a great collection of shops, restaurants and cafés, and a variety of sports facilities. The icing on the cake is a varied calendar of events including a weekly farmer’s market, yoga, zumba, salsa, karaoke and an impressive line up of bands and singers for the regular evening concerts.

Yas Marina

Ocean World Marina is part of a 35-acre entertainment complex located three miles west of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Here you can enjoy the casino, featuring a floorto-ceiling tropical fish aquarium, Las Vegas-style dance shows, theatre, a wide choice of restaurants and bars but, perhaps most notably, the Adventure Park. Claiming to have the largest manmade dolphin habitat in the world, it also offers an opportunity to see sea lions, sharks, stingrays, exotic birds, tigers and a tropical rain forest. Diving, snorkeling and interacting with the animals is a highlight with plenty of scheduled activities. The marina itself has 104 slips accommodating yachts up to 250 feet in length and is also an official port of entry complete with immigration and customs facilities. In Fiji, Port Denarau Marina has undergone something of a transformation over the last three years. The new Bellingham Marine floating jetty for visiting yachts brings marina capacity up to 100 berths and provides for superyachts up to 250 feet in length. It’s also become a yachting hub, with a boatyard that includes a variety of workshops, and is the center for boating day trips and ferry services to nearby resorts. Located on Denerau Island, Fiji’s largest integrated resort, superyacht visitors have access to many sporting and leisure activities including 36 restaurants, an international golf course and a game fishing club. The

marina also features live bands and cultural shows throughout the week. It’s impossible to ignore Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi. Designed and built to the highest international standards as the focal point of Abu Dhabi’s Formula 1 Grand Prix track, it opened just in time to host its first guests ahead of the inaugural 2009 Grand Prix. November 2011 sees the third Grand Prix and now Camper & Nicholsons Marinas are managing this unique marina. Yas can accommodate 143 yachts up to 295 feet in length with additional visitor berthing for yachts up to 490 feet. Of course the Grand Prix only happens once a year but there are plenty of other entertainment possibilities—family fun at Ferrari World, a links golf course, other motoring activities centered around the race track and regular concerts and events. And if you need a break from all that entertainment there’s always the attraction of Abu Dhabi’s 200 uninhabited islands.

Needless to say, it’s a pretty good place for fishing too and offers plenty of shopping, dining and leisure choices as well.

Abel Point Marina

It’s hard to beat Westrec Marinas’ Fernandina Harbor Marina, in northern Florida, for all-round accessibility. It’s well placed for those traveling south on the Intracoastal Waterway on their way to South Florida, the Bahamas and Caribbean, and a handy stop for those leaving the south on their way north. Jacksonville International Airport is 35 minutes away and the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport and helicopter pad is just 10 minutes from the marina. When you’re there, however, you’re in the heart of historic Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach with a great range of restaurants, bars, boutiques and activities within walking distance. More, including golf courses and sky-diving bases, are just a short drive away.

one of the few marinas in Australia that is able to provide the services and facilities that superyacht owners expect, including a dedicated concierge on arrival. Located at the gateway to the 74 Whitsunday Islands, it gives access to beautiful beaches, great fishing grounds and fabulous diving opportunities, including, of course, the Great Barrier Reef. Proserpine (Whitsundays) Airport is just 35 minutes away, there’s a helicopter pad, and around the marina you can find pretty well anything you’d like, from seaplane tours and skydiving, to lively clubs and local markets.

Port Louis Marina

Top for SPORTSFISHING

Sportsfishing enthusiasts are spoilt for choice when it comes to the world’s best superports. If that’s your primary purpose, check the fishing calendar for the best time to visit. Bimini Bay Resort and Marina claims to have the largest marina in The Bahamas. In fact, there are two marinas with a total of 230 slips—one accommodating yachts up to 130 feet and the second, a megayacht marina with 96 slips for vessels up to 210 feet. Nearby is an oversized pool with swim-up bar

and Mediterranean restaurant. The resort development features a spa, a Conrad Hotel and Casino, and even more restaurants, bars and shops in Fisherman’s Village, the commercial retail center. However, many people come to this area for the fishing, particularly fly fishing for bonefish. The conditions are good all year round and the bonefish continues to prove that, pound for pound, he’s probably the strongest and fastest of any saltwater fish, and therefore an exhilarating challenge to catch. from the international airport, is a great location for sportsfishing, with the Spice Island Billfish Tournament held in January each year. This year’s event was considered by many to be the best ever, with 52 boats taking part and 94 billfish releases. Port Louis’ location below the hurricane belt makes it a safe all year round destination and, apart from fishing, there are also some stunning diving opportunities. The excellent marina facilities include a spa and a variety of dining and entertainment venues.
