STONAR Welcome

Welcome Long-established values, modern education.

P

upils come to Stonar from the local area and from around the world to learn within a vibrant school community. Academic life is at the heart of our school. We foster curiosity and a love of learning, encouraging each pupil to think and question, and to persevere in pursuit of his or her goals. At the same time, pupils of all ages benefit from individual input and opportunities to develop the personal characteristics that will help them to flourish as they grow up and take their places in the adult world. Initially established for girls, Stonar started accepting boys 10 years ago and the school will be fully co-educational for boarding and day pupils by September 2019. A relatively small school in beautiful grounds, Stonar combines excellent facilities with a warm and friendly atmosphere which underpins our pupils’ growth and success. Stonar is also part of the NACE group of schools and has close links with 28 sister schools in Europe and beyond, opening up international opportunities to our pupils. At Stonar we set high standards; we expect everyone to aim for them and we support them in doing that. As a result we are repeatedly in the top 10% of schools for value-added at GCSE, meaning that pupils regularly obtain higher results than expected. Our pupils have many different interests and, for those who choose to ride, our high quality equestrian centre offers special opportunities to develop riding alongside academic studies. I hope that you will enjoy reading the prospectus which shows a little of the dedicated care and

teaching, as well as the varied activities at Stonar, that contribute to each child’s development at school. We are always delighted to welcome visitors, so please come and see the school for yourself and discover more about our lively learning environment. Dr Sally Divall, Head

Do come and see how we blend the best of traditional and new. 6

tonar was founded in 1895 in Kent and was evacuated out to its current location during the Second World War, where it has occupied the 18th Century manor house ever since. There are plenty of shops and restaurants locally; in Bradford on Avon, a beautiful historic market town, and in Chippenham and Melksham which are also nearby. The World Heritage Site of Bath is within 9 miles, and regular trips for boarders are arranged.

Senior boarders may visit Bath and the local towns at the weekends 8

The school’s location is peaceful and safe; its own grounds are perfect for sport, riding, playing and exploration. The school is well connected, with easy access to the M4 motorway for London and the airports and stations at Bath and Chippenham. Welcome

S

A British school with a global outlook

onar is part of NACE Schools, an educational group currently operating 28 international schools in five countries: Spain, France, Italy, the UK and India. Stonar is the group’s flagship UK school. As part of the NACE Schools family, Stonar is developing a unique global facet to its pupils’ education. Exchange trips, language immersion weeks and cross-cultural events bring schools in the group together and allow students to work alongside peers of other nationalities.

NACE SCHOOLS EVENTS & EXCHANGES Inter-schools events offered each year are an opportunity for the students to hone their language skills, participate in challenging events, experience different cultures, exchange views and ideas, and form new friendships. Working alongside peers from other countries fosters a sense of respect and tolerance towards others, which is a key value of NACE Schools. The events include: • NACE Olympics – 3 days of international sporting challenge • NACE International Music Week – a great musical week culminating in a student-led concert • NACE Academic Olympics – 3 days of problem solving and scientific competition Other international learning opportunities include a Model United Nations and language immersion trips to NACE schools in Spain and France. join their overseas counterparts in lessons, practise their language skills and visit cultural highlights. In turn, Stonar plays host to students from within the group. These experiences are a great opportunity for pupils to broaden their horizons and form lasting friendships.

CAPITAL INVESTMENT Stonar has benefited from major capital investment and a new classroom block opened in 2017 with new rooms for humanities and languages teaching as well as a brand new ICT suite. A new recreation area has also been created for Senior pupils. Substantial works have taken place in our Equestrian Centre with new reception and visitor facilities as well as stables and a hay barn. Boarding houses have been refurbished. In addition, the swimming pool, ICT network and play areas for nursery and early years have all been upgraded. The vision is to ensure that Stonar offers modern, practical spaces for teaching, learning and relaxing; enhancing all aspects of our pupils’ experience.

A Shared Mission and Values The NACE Schools share a core vision: to prepare each student to live successfully in a globalised world by furnishing them with the skills and attitudes to flourish academically and personally. Educational Excellence We provide an inspirational learning-centred environment where each student is encouraged to understand how to learn and to achieve the highest possible results Education in values Personal development is key to success in a globalised world and we encourage pupils to understand the core values of respect, resilience and integrity as well as the prep school personal learning goals, and to live them out in their daily lives.

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS IN A GLOBALISED WORLD

Global Readiness A foundation of British values and the UK curriculum is complemented by an outward looking attitude and the opportunities afforded to pupils from membership of the NACE group of schools. Language teaching and experiential learning opportunities allow pupils to feel at ease working with students from different cultures both at home and abroad. More than a school Pupils gain knowledge and skills beyond the academic curriculum through our extensive co-curricular programme and outstanding equestrian facilities.

Meet DR SALLY DIVALL Head of Stonar

I

grew up in London and studied Science at Cambridge University, specialising in Physics. After graduating I worked in business planning and in scientific research. During my career I was involved in a variety of research projects that included looking for methods of retrieving fingerprints from items that had been underwater, modelling the impact of energy costs on industry and modelling the heating effects of ultrasound scans during pregnancy. I also spent some time working at Exploratory, the science centre in Bristol, and was inspired by the hands-on approach to learning to move into teaching. I initially joined

12

Stonar as Head of Physics and was Deputy Head Academic before being appointed as Head. My fondest memories of my own schooling involve doing science experiments that might now be considered too risky. We had a weather station on our school roof and had to climb out onto the roof to take readings; once out there we had fantastic views over London. We also had open fires in our classrooms and used to bring in potatoes to bake in the ashes. Apart from Science, my favourite subjects were Art and English and in my spare time I was keen on riding though, living in London, I wasn’t able to do this as much as I would have liked. I know that I would have been thrilled to come to a school

Academically I want pupils to remain curious and open minded; to learn to think, question, debate and argue logically and to enjoy doing so.

like Stonar where you can choose to include horses in your daily life. I have lived for most of my adult life in Bath and have two grown-up daughters. In my spare time I like to be out of doors and I take part in off road running and long distance mountain treks when I have the opportunity. Having become part of the NACE Schools group we are going through a very exciting time at Stonar. The school is transforming into a thriving co-educational community where pupils grow up to be confident and caring young people who are at home in an international world. We are developing exceptional opportunities for pupils to work alongside

their peers in other European schools and take part in inter-schools events. Academically, I want pupils to remain curious and open minded, to learn to think, question, debate and argue logically and to enjoy doing so. Alongside this, we have to foster creativity and provide opportunities for pupils to develop the personal and interpersonal qualities that will equip them to flourish in and contribute to the modern world. At Stonar, there is a real emphasis on each pupil developing as an individual to become the best he or she can be both personally and academically and our staff go out of their way to support each child in this.

Stonar pupil perspectives Matilda Thomson FORMER PUPIL

Matilda, a former Deputy Head Girl, left Stonar in 2015 and went on to study a BA in Geography at Royal Holloway University of London. I joined Stonar in Year 6. Joining a new school is always hard, particularly if you are boarding but Stonar is so welcoming. Team-building activities helped us form new friendships and I was allocated a buddy – whom I also shared a dorm with – so I was never by myself or lost at any time of day. After a week I knew my way around. The one aspect of Stonar I loved most was the genuine family atmosphere, particularly in the boarding houses. The teachers at Stonar are so friendly and, in my view, closer to the students than in many schools. They were always there to help you, whether with homework or any other problems. Boarding was so much fun; the older pupils spend time with the younger ones – at mealtimes and bed time – so everyone knows each other well. The weekends were amazing. Friday nights in the summer were spent out on the front lawn relaxing or playing sport with the other houses. On Saturdays there were activities, sports fixtures, homework and the riders would go to the equestrian centre. We all came back together on Saturday nights for takeaways and films in the common room. Sundays were very chilled and Sunday brunch was the best meal of the week. Although I wasn’t particularly sporty, I had riding lessons for several years. I loved drama and took LAMDA and RADA Shakespeare exams, as well as taking part in the Mid Somerset Festival every year. I performed in the annual school productions and was also in the chamber choir. I was well prepared for life after school. Boarding teaches you to get on with those you live and work with. Stonar provides many opportunities to develop independence and strength of character; with a huge range of academic and adventurous trips, inspirational visiting speakers, assemblies celebrating pupils’ achievements and the many charitable projects that the school is involved with. I would absolutely recommend Stonar to others. I loved it from day one. In the future I hope to work with children and teach at somewhere like Stonar. 14

Robbie MacLeod YEAR 8

Robbie joined the school in Year 7 and was one of our first cohort of Senior boys. My favourite thing about coming to school is having fun with my friends; having new experiences and educating myself. The teachers at Stonar are fun, friendly and interactive. I really like the sciences and enjoy doing the practicals. For example, we heated up popcorn with a Bunsen burner. It was an interesting experiment and it taught me how to use the Bunsen burner safely. I also like Geography; you find out about places as well as problems such as the issues caused by poor land. Right now we’re learning about hill sheep farming. I enjoy Drama; the teacher is funny and I enjoy being active and the experience of acting out a character. In breaktimes, I like reading, so I often go to the LRC to read. Or I might go and play games in the classroom. I really like the grounds and when you’re in the Senior School you can go where you like. My favourite trip was the one out to Barcelona. I stayed with a Spanish family and it was a lot of fun. There were definitely cultural differences. For example when it rained, all the British children went out to play, but all the Spanish children stayed inside! The food is great and my favourite is the chicken pie. If someone I knew was thinking about joining the school, I’d tell them that it’s lots of fun, there are loads of different things you can do and it’s a really interactive environment.

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

Pupils start aged 3 in the Nursery with a ‘mud kitchen’ and digging area, a bug hotel, a hill with a slide, and music and sound areas, all surrounded by plants: flowers, grasses and herbs.

THE BEST PLACE TO

GROW-UP

By the age of 18, leaving the Sixth Form, our students are ready for the challenging global marketplace and the likelihood that they will have not just one but several careers.

16

17

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

Nursery We share the glorious setting of the Prep and Senior School. All the facilities are there for us, yet we have our own special and separate place where children from the age of 3 feel secure as they take their first steps in education.

To help busy parents, our Nursery is open all year round. Before and after school care is available from 8.00am – 6.00pm. 18

NURSERY

Stonar Nursery harnesses the curiosity and exploratory nature of children, guiding them to learn through play. Warm and trusting relationships between staff and children gently encourage the children to grow emotionally, socially and intellectually. This is where they learn to love learning, ready for all the years that follow. A combination of adult and child-led activities are structured by our highly-qualified staff around the learning principles that are essential to children’s learning and development. The Early Years International Curriculum’s (EYIC) unique process shifts the focus from measuring outcomes to the child’s development pathway. Focussed specifically on the needs of 3-4 year olds, the EYIC learning cycle makes connections between learning in different subject areas; a holistic approach which children instinctively embrace, and which deepens and enriches their understanding. Our experienced staff build, extend and enhance knowledge and understanding through providing opportunities for children to explore and express their ideas in multiple ways. Nursery children also work together with our Reception class, ensuring they are well prepared for school when that transition comes. Children spend lots of time outdoors, both in the nursery’s own dedicated play areas and in the wider school grounds. Forest School sessions take place twice a week and children also benefit from specialist teaching in swimming, ballet and Spanish.

19

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

With our small classes we can pace the learning for every child, tailored to their needs. With our small classes, we can pace the learning for every child, tailored to their needs. We foster curiosity and allow children to explore at their own pace and follow their own interests, incorporating the child voice. We make sure each child feels the constant buzz of achievement, completing new activities and absorbing new skills. We encourage them to develop perseverance and concentration and celebrate their achievements with them. Every Early Years child has a ‘Key Person’ who provides a loving and secure base for establishing relationships with other staff and children, and helps your child develop their sense of belonging. The Key Person is a friendly and supportive point of contact who works in partnership with the family to build a child’s online learning journey which reflects their achievements and development at home and at nursery.

Happy means confident; confident means eager to learn. 20

21

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

PREP SCHOOL From the very beginning we develop confident, inquisitive and independent girls and boys, who enjoy their education and are well-prepared for the next stage of their school careers.

W

e have small classes and experienced, primary and subject specialist teachers who provide creative and imaginative learning that fuels children’s engagement, motivation and love of learning. Prep School children have access to a great range of facilities on site – sports pitches and indoor pool, Equestrian Centre, drama & dance facilities, music, Forest School and junior boarding (for Year 5 & upwards) for full-time boarding or occasional overnights. There are wide expanses of lawn to play outdoors. Numerous clubs and after-school activities

22

provide plenty of action beyond the classroom and there is before and after-school care for parents who need this flexibility. Our holiday club, Club Stonar, is also open throughout the school holidays with a funfilled programme of indoor and outdoor activities. Now, with links to 28 schools worldwide and international mindedness taught as part of their curriculum, Prep pupils are benefitting from an education that offers a truly global perspective. Older Prep pupils have academic and cultural exchanges with sister schools in Europe.

ACADEMIC Our busy, learning-focussed curriculum, delivered by the Prep School’s excellent teachers inspires creativity and intellectual curiosity. Themed learning is centered on a ‘Foundation’ topic, which brings an exciting dimension to the curriculum, immersing children in a learning experience which builds knowledge, skills and understanding across the subjects. The emphasis is firmly on active learning. Pupils enjoy trips and activities, linked to their ‘Foundation’ topic, which support their learning and keep them stimulated and engaged.

Some pupils show obvious academic ability from an early age; others may need more encouragement. At Stonar Prep we help each child discover their aptitudes and develop their confidence as they experience numerous opportunities within and beyond the classroom. Pupils are encouraged to aim for the best in all that they do, whether it is academic, sporting, creative or performance, and we have high expectations of them.

23

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

We encourage the boys and girls to take responsibility for their own learning, behaviour and progress. This helps them become more independent. We involve parents in their child’s education at every step along the way; progress is regularly and rigorously reported and the achievements of pupils are recognised and celebrated. Because the children learn and grow within our secure and nurturing environment, they develop a caring attitude towards each other, their school and the world around them. This is underpinned by our Personal Learning Goals which develop the individual qualities and dispositions that will be essential in the children’s futures. Academic progress is monitored by form tutors and our learning support staff. Targeted, small group intervention is provided for particularly able pupils and pupils who require further reinforcement. Regular assessments help teachers and pupils understand what is required to make improvements in learning.

24

When pupils progress to the Senior School, we ensure that they are ready for the next stage of their education as confident learners equipped with the skills required to thrive.

PREP SCHOOL

SPORT & CLUBS

We involve parents in their child’s education at every step along the way

A long term sports development programme focussing on fundamental motor skills and activities combined with superb facilities enables Prep pupils to experience many different sports. They not only develop their core skills but learn to enjoy competition. The boys and girls are taught by specialist sports coaches from the age of five with an emphasis on enjoyment, participation and excellence. All children compete in an inter-schools’ fixture programme from age seven. Talented children have the opportunity to play out of age group in school fixtures and are encouraged to apply for scholarships at the end of Year 6.

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

Meet MARK BRAIN HEAD OF PREP SCHOOL

W

hen I was at school English, Games and PE were my highest achieving subjects, but I remember particularly enjoying French and History. Later at Exeter University I gained a BA Hons in Education. Outside the classroom I played rugby and football to county level and later played football semi-professionally. The inspiration to become a teacher was a stint of work experience in a primary school coupled with helping coach youngsters at my local football club. I have previously worked at much bigger schools, but Stonar is the most inclusive. Naturally there is competition, through sports for example, but also an acceptance of each other’s differences. That does not always exist in larger, highly competitive schools, where the strong get stronger and the weak weaker. At Stonar, each individual is valued and nurtured. We strive to get the best out of every child, not just academically but also as a person. Stonar children tend to be confident, they have solid self belief and they do everything – plays, concerts, sports teams. It’s very rare to turn a child down for any activity. Stonar just doesn’t do that to children. Why would anyone want to tell an eight-year-old that they are not good enough at something, when they are so young and have so much learning still ahead of them? I enjoy teaching at Stonar because you get time with each child in every lesson. Small class sizes mean you come to understand each child’s strengths and areas for development. You feel as though you have achieved something in every lesson for every child. I also enjoy the lack of restriction in creating lesson content – it’s often not possible in schools that are handcuffed by exam pressures and government policy. We benefit from being part of the NACE group of schools by taking children in Years 5-8 to spend a week in Barcelona. This trip has a multi-faceted focus on culture, language and social skills. Alongside the integration of a unique international element to some of our units of work, the children are truly given great opportunities to prepare them for an increasingly globalised world.

26

27

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

At Stonar you will find and develop your own individual talents. Many schools say this; we actually do it.

Senior School

It’s our job to know you better than you know yourself. We achieve this with small classes, a high ratio of staff to pupils and personal attention in and outside lessons. High fliers are stretched and there is exceptional support for those who need it. Our pupils flourish as they are guided to uncover and explore the full potential in their talents - and we join with them in celebrating their achievements.

28

At Stonar you are not only taught: you learn how to learn.

29

ACADEMIC STRETCH & SUPPORT At Stonar we believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to achieve his or her full potential and the curriculum is designed to facilitate this. A programme of curriculum events to enrich and enhance learning is included in the school fees; further optional events are also available and additional lessons and activities are arranged for groups of pupils who will benefit from them.

Able & Talented Pupils

As a result, Stonar pupils stand out when they leave. They don’t just follow the beaten track. They look for fulfilment, not conformity in their career paths. You’ll be ready for real life, because alongside the learning you will absorb real-life skills such as problem solving, team working and leadership. International opportunities give you experience of working and socialising with peers of other nationalities and backgrounds. No wonder other people – employers, universities, colleagues – are so impressed when they meet Stonar’s past pupils. Academically, we are expert at ‘adding value’ This means you are likely to get better grades here than you would in nine out of ten other schools. At Stonar you are not only taught: you learn how to learn. Right from the start you will analyse and manage your own learning. Regular sessions with your tutor group will sharpen your study skills and place your studies in the broader context of current affairs, careers, the arts and the environment. The ability to think for yourself and explore new ideas, imagination, resilience and high aspirations – these qualities will stay with you for the rest of your life. For GCSE we build the timetable, as far as we can, around your choice of academic subjects and outside interests, so that competitive riders and keen athletes, for instance, have time to practise. We work you hard – and we want you to enjoy it. 30

Opportunities are provided for able and talented pupils both within and beyond the curriculum, to provide pupils with accelerated learning, depth, breadth and enrichment. Within the curriculum classroom teachers provide challenge and encourage independent learning. This may include undertaking extension work or an extra qualification such as GCSE Statistics. Visiting experts, authors and artists run exciting workshops and events in schools. This is combined with trips to external events, all designed to broaden pupils’ knowledge base and understanding. Pupils may also be selected as part of a school team to take part in extra events during the school year. Over 20 additional events, trips and workshops ran in the previous academic year including a visit to the Pretty Curious engineering workshop, Year 12 & 13s visit to TEDx Youth, Art workshops with visiting artists and the NACE Sports Olympics.

Learning Support The well-qualified teachers in our Learning Support Department provide individual or small group support to pupils who will benefit from specialist input to improve their maths, English or study skills. Some, but not all, pupils who receive Learning Support lessons may have a specific learning difficulty, and adjustments can be made to the curriculum to allow pupils time for these lessons. Learning support teachers work alongside classroom teachers to help pupils make the best possible progress across the curriculum.

EAL Four EAL lessons are included in the curriculum for pupils working in a second language.

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

Stonar is regularly in the top 10% of schools at GCSE for value-added This is an independently measured metric which is tracked as part of a long-term project run by Durham University. Pupils sit a test which provides a statistical prediction of their likely GCSE grades, benchmarked against other students at the same level. GCSE results are then sent to the University and a ‘value-added’ score is calculated which analyses the difference between predicted and actual results. Stonar consistently achieves an exceptional uplift of up to a grade per pupil. Small class sizes, excellent teaching, high expectations, individual support and an exceptionally wide range of opportunities mean that we develop the talents of every individual, inspiring pupils of all abilities to maximise their potential across and beyond the formal curriculum. With almost 50% of the grades across all subjects at GCSE awarded A*-A grades (well over double the national average) it’s easy to forget that Stonar admits pupils with a wide range of academic ability. We instil curiosity, confidence, compassion and independence so that pupils develop the skills and attitudes that will enable them to flourish in the future.

31

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

The Sixth Form Experience The Sixth Form is a stepping stone to where you want to head in life and we will help you prepare.

W

ith small classes and close working relationships with teachers and tutors, Stonar’s Sixth Form provides a fantastic environment for fulfilling your academic potential. Alongside this, our Sixth Formers are given the opportunities for personal development, leadership and co-curricular activities they need to become happy and successful young adults. An outstanding tutor team will support you and go the extra mile in helping you at every turn. Relationships between staff and students are excellent - in classes, at social events, whilst pursuing

32

challenging activities and in mentoring during these two important years. Even after students leave, they maintain contact with tutors and frequently seek advice – whether on CV writing or an academic essay – and of course our tutors are delighted to help. Whilst the majority of our students go on to university, this is not the only option and you will find that instead of being pigeon-holed, we will explore all options with you. More importantly you need to be ready for the challenging global marketplace and the likelihood that you will have not just one but several careers.

You will be challenged and supported to fulfil your academic and personal potential.

33

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

There are numerous ways to stretch yourself BEYOND THE CURRICULUM Alongside your academic career, we encourage our Sixth Formers to embrace leadership opportunities. Our Head Pupil and prefect team lead the pupil body and there are numerous other ways to stretch yourself. Some Sixth Formers supervise activities in the Prep School and help out in the boarding houses. Others lead the various inter-house competitions, or take a key role in running charity fund-raising activities. There is a Year 11 and 12 planning committee that shapes the events and activities for the next academic year in the Sixth Form, ensuring that these match the interests of the students. The choice of activities is wide and there are trips and challenges which broaden pupils’ horizons and prepare them for the wider world.

CHALLENGES & EXPERIENCES Our Romania Challenge experience sends a team of Sixth Formers to a Romanian slum, where they work with destitute families on a project such as building a new dwelling, or farm buildings to help the family take steps to a more sustainable way of life. Pupils are responsible for all their own fund-raising, and many describe it as ‘life-changing’. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is very popular with our Sixth Formers who can take their Silver and Gold Awards via the Explorer Scout Group. Explorer Scouts is open to pupils from Years 10-13 and meets every fortnight in a dedicated base area within the Stonar grounds. Pupils learn skills such as campfire cookery and night-hiking as well as taking part in exciting trips such as caving and climbing. Pupils can take the opportunity to complete the Culinary Skills course which includes the Leith’s Cookery Toolkit; invaluable either for those looking for a career in the hospitality industry, planning a ski season, or simply as a life skill. Following a successful Camps International trip to Borneo, we will be preparing a group for a trip to Kenya; an extraordinary opportunity for travel, adventure and personal development.

34

SIXTH FORM

LIFE AFTER STONAR The Head of Careers is an integral part of the Sixth Form team. You will have access to a careers programme which delivers inspiration and information. As well as individual support and mentoring, backed by the robust Futurewise careers system, a programme of visiting speakers, careers seminars and work experience opportunities expose pupils to a broad range of options. Support is provided to hone interview skills, develop compelling CVs and personal statements. We also offer coaching in body language and social skills, to ensure that pupils project the best impression from the off. Life after Stonar is a life skills programme delivered by the Head of Sixth Form which runs through Years 12 and 13. You will learn about mortgages, income tax and a diverse range of topics designed to equip you with essential skills and required in the wider world.

EDUCATION FROM 3—18

Abbey

STONAR 2006 – 2015

I studied Chemistry, Biology and Maths for A Level and played a lot of netball too. I had great support from teachers during my university applications, including help with practice interviews. My Maths teacher’s son-in-law is a doctor and she arranged for him to talk to me about medical school and show me around Liverpool where he was a student. I was Deputy Head Girl which was a real honour. There were three of us in the Head Girl team so we could spread out the responsibilities. I boarded from Year 5; my parents chose Stonar because they knew I would be well looked after. When we were younger we used to go out and play hide and seek on the front lawn. By the time I was in York, the Sixth Form House, when we got back to the dorm in the evening everyone did their own thing. Sometimes we played on the Wii and we always enjoyed the dance games. In my final year, we were mostly studying. As a boarder you are much more involved in the school; you get to know everyone so well. House events at Stonar are special and the support you get is amazing. For example, when you’re running the cross country and you hear everyone cheering for you, it’s a great feeling. I play the tenor horn and I was in the Wind Band and Chamber Choir. I’ve been playing since I was four so I’ve grown up with music. It’s helped me learn how to prioritise time. The relationships with teachers are so strong; I loved this about Stonar the whole way through my time there. Because the school is small it’s more informal – the staff know more about you. They are professional and we got a lot of work done, but we could have a laugh at the same time. Abbey is now studying Medicine at Cardiff University.

Felicity

STONAR 2009 – 2016

The teachers are one of the best things about Stonar. They are all really helpful and gave me so much support, even during the holidays. They work hard to make each lesson different. History was a favourite subject. Lessons were discussion based, but everyone had laptops and the teacher emailed documents and links as the discussion progressed so we could all access them instantly. If you like sport, there is plenty at Stonar. The coaching is excellent, with specialist teachers for each sport. I was in the first netball team and we had plenty of opportunities to play together as a team, with fixtures on Saturdays. As captain of the netball team, deputy head of Hart House and finally as Head Girl, I had plenty of opportunities to develop leadership, but I’ve also seen the importance of working in a team. I ran a lot of the house events. Inter-house dance and music competitions give everyone a chance to show off talents that might otherwise not be seen. I met regularly with our careers advisor during the Sixth Form who helped me and talked through all the different options open to me. A really good Sixth Form club, Life After Stonar gave us an insight into aspects of adult life such as taxes and mortgages. Study Skills classes provided guidance on working independently which will stand me in good stead at University. Favourite Stonar memories include the Year 10 activities weekend at Weston-SuperMare. We camped and had a go at activities like indoor skiing, abseiling and rock climbing. Stonar has such a strong community feel. Everyone knows everyone – pupils and teachers. I have made friends for life here. There is something for everyone, whether you’re an all-rounder or a specialist: good sport, music and a ‘gifted and talented’ programme. Felicity is now studying Modern Languages at Durham University.

STONAR BOARDING A TYPICAL SENIOR SCHOOL DAY AT STONAR

When you’re at work, you’re at work. And when you’re at home, you’re 100% focused on family life. 21st-century parents? Yes, and 21st-century boarders.

38

Make lifelong friendships and share the whole day with those friends.

Weekends are lively: There’s a wide variety of trips, clubs and activities to suit all interests.

80 acres of gardens and parkland to stretch out in

Concentrate on your homework in school time, and with advice from teachers on hand. Make lifelong friendships and share the whole day with those friends. Fill your spare time with sport, arts, excursions and more activities than you can imagine. Learn to get on with others in the community of your boarding house – helping the younger ones, learning from the older ones and other nationalities, taking on responsibility. This is the ideal preparation for life and work in the global 21st century.

39

STONAR BOARDING Boarding is life turned up to the max. Pupils like it (and increasingly they are the ones that choose it) because they don’t spend time commuting and they are not distracted by the different demands of school and home. Parents of our boarders agree. Boarding is not a substitute for home: it’s a bonus. At Stonar, boarding is full-time and we do not have exeat weekends - a real plus for international or far-from-home boarders - though parents can take pupils home for a weekend if they wish. Occasional boarding is also offered to day pupils including two free nights per term.

Work seriously, play energetically, relax completely.

All boarding houses have WiFi and are fully equipped with TV, DVD and games consoles.

40

Our cosy boarding houses all share a family environment, where pupils can relax, be themselves - and also have a lot of fun. Our highly experienced team of houseparents work to create a supportive and homely atmosphere. Because Stonar has such a friendly, inclusive and nurturing environment, pupils naturally develop a strong sense of responsibility, caring for fellow pupils, their school and the wider world. As members of one of our junior and senior Houses, boarding and day pupils mix together; everyone benefits from the experience of a residential style of education. Stretched and inspired by everything they experience at Stonar and supported by our strong community, pupils develop into confident, outgoing young adults. An exciting range of evening and weekend activities with choice and variety ensures that pupils’ existing interests are catered for, whilst everyone is encouraged to try new things. As part of a diverse community with an international dimension, pupils make friends from all around the world, developing an appreciation and understanding of different cultures and viewpoints.

41

Pupils, parents and teachers alike often describe Stonar as a family.

PASTORAL CARE

who are always happy to provide an approachable and supportive listening ear. Our ELSA qualified and highly experienced Pastoral Intervention Practitioner, is a key member of the Pastoral Care team, working closely with Houseparents, nursing staff and the Learning Support department in providing additional support for both Prep and Senior pupils as required. The Health and Well-Being Centre (HWBC) lies at the heart of the campus and is staffed during the school day by very experienced Registered Nurses with training in all aspects of young people’s needs, including triage, minor injuries and practice nursing thereby providing complete professional care. The nurses hold drop-in sessions every day, and a school counsellor joins the team on a weekly basis with her therapy dog, Holly. A doctor from the local Health Centre holds clinics for boarding pupils each week. NICOLA HAWKINS, DEPUTY HEAD

ur nurturing ethos is integral to the school, backed up by an outstanding and robust pastoral structure which ensures the very best care for your child. Headed up by our Deputy Head, Nicola Hawkins, the Pastoral Care team ensures that a watchful and caring eye is kept on all pupils. Through the tutor programme, each pupil has designated staff responsible for their wellbeing and there is a broader network of staff who are always available for pupils to talk to. Pastoral care is an important component of the tutor programme which actively supports the development of emotional toughness. In the boarding house, Houseparents are supported by duty tutors and Resident Assistants,

Our Code of Conduct All Senior School pupils sign up to our Code of Conduct which is designed to enable all pupils to develop academically and personally while being recognised, valued and celebrated as individuals. Our ethos is underpinned by the three core values of respect, resilience and integrity and we actively educate pupils to understand these values and apply them to their daily lives. Respect encourages pupils to listen to and respect others as well as practising self-respect and taking care of property and the wider environment. Resilience encourages pupils to adopt a positive mindset in the face of setbacks and learn about their strengths and when and where to seek support. Integrity asks pupils to commit to high standards of behaviour and stick to them; taking personal responsibility for their decisions and actions as well as taking pride in their work.

In the Prep School, the nine ‘Personal Goals’ are pillars in guiding pupils personal development as well as their academic strengths: Enquiry, Thoughtfulness, Morality, Communication, Resilience, Adaptability, Co-operation, International Mindedness and Respect. These qualities are integral to life at Stonar, underpinning personal and academic development. Each child gradually learns to become independent by starting to take responsibility for their own learning, behaviour and progress.

Food Food at Stonar is great and the pupils tell us so. All meals are served in the dining room. There’s plenty of choice and all special dietary requirements can be provided for. Every morning there’s a breakfast with cereal, porridge, toast, yogurts, fruit and a full cooked breakfast. You can also have toast toppers or croissants depending on the day of the week. Juices and hot drinks are also available. At lunchtime, pupils are treated to a bistro-style service with plenty of variety. As well as hot options with generous portions, there is a range of self-service platters with tasty warm salads from grilled halloumi to warm poached salmon and chorizo, falafel to chicken Caesar salads. Every day there’s a home-made, hot pudding with firm favourites such as fruit crumbles and sponge. There’s always plenty of fresh fruit, yoghurts and other tempting mini gastro desserts to sample. Dinner is when the whole boarding community comes together; there is a great family atmosphere, lots of chat and plenty of laughter. The supper menus offer a similarly varied choice to lunchtime. Menus can be downloaded from our website, www.stonarschool.com

“The food here is really good and so varied. The self-service really helps cut down on wastage as you can choose how much you want to eat.” LAUREN, YEAR 13.

International Students

We offer a traditional British boarding school education to a carefully controlled number of international students from different countries.

It is vital that such pupils are immersed in English language and culture. Accordingly, tutor groups and boarding rooms are well planned to ensure that our international pupils are fully integrated and make plenty of British friends. International students achieve higher results at Stonar in their IGCSEs and GCSEs than the UK and worldwide averages. Stonar is also consistently in the top 10% of schools for ‘value added’, which means that students typically exceed predicted figures for academic achievement. The majority of students go on to study at the top UK or international universities. As well as long-term placements, international students may also be able to come for shorter stays, of up to one year. Such pupils are fully integrated into the rich academic and extra-curricular life of Stonar and are supported with EAL (English as an Additional Language) lessons. Boarding at Stonar is friendly and safe with a genuine family feel. Boarders enjoy every opportunity to develop their hobbies and talents and learn useful life skills. International students can bring their own horses or loan one to take part in one of the most highly-regarded equestrian programmes in the UK. The can take part in many sports, enjoy art, drama, dance, swimming and many other pursuits. Pupils are encouraged to become more independent but are always supported with the highest standards in pastoral care. For further information see: www.stonarschool.com

Paula Vesting YEAR 13

I chose Stonar because I loved the horses and the idea of being able to ride at school was really appealing. I came last September to stay for a year and decided I wanted to be here for longer so now I’m staying on. When I first arrived, I was really shy but everyone was so welcoming. After a few days, I already had great friends. No-one is an outsider at Stonar; everyone is accepted. I study Art, Photography, Geography and German. Photography is just the best subject and I love it so much. The teachers give you so much freedom to do what you want to do, while supporting and guiding you. I wouldn’t have been able to study Photography in Germany, but now I would like to study it at university. Geography is hard, but really interesting. The teachers are so interested in it themselves and that helps you learn and makes the lessons fun and engaging. The field trips are also great. I have EAL three times a week, and even though my English was not bad when I arrived, it has really helped, particularly with reading and grammar. My vocabulary has expanded so much. The people here are lots of fun to be with and the teachers are great. Everyone here is motivated to learn and everyone is included. There is such a strong community spirit. Living with your friends in boarding is so much fun. I’ve never been homesick as you never have to be on your own and everyone is accepting and loving. The social side is good – we have great trips out to Bath and to the cinema. There are lots of opportunities to go out; there are rules but it’s not too restricted. Boarding also helps me concentrate on school work. Because I’m already in the school environment, I’m more motivated to work ahead. Riding also helps me be more organised as I have to arrange my time so I can get down to the yard. I’ve got a loan pony, Jasper, and I have riding lessons three times a week. I take him out competing and my jumping has really improved; I’ve gone from 60cm to 90cm since starting here. Being on the NSEA competition team was a great experience – it was fantastic to prepare and compete together with my friends.

Vivian Li, Year 13 Vivian joined Stonar in Year 9

Before coming to Stonar, I was a boarder in China, but it is completely different here – it is so much more homely. I went straight into a dorm with three English girls. They made me feel so welcome and my English started to improve straight away. We chat about so many different things! Boarding is like a big family and everyone is friendly and kind. At first, my English wasn’t great, but EAL teacher helped me a lot and I made a lot of progress. Whenever I didn’t understand the prep, someone would help me with it. My favourite subject is Maths; it’s the subject I’m most confident with and I really enjoy the clarity of it. Everything is a bit more relaxed in the Sixth Form. There are fewer rules and much more independent learning. I am planning to stay in the UK for University and study Mechanical Engineering. I’ve had some really great advice from the careers office here who have helped me find the right places and courses to apply for. If ever you are struggling with anything, the school really helps you. I didn’t ride in China but here I have a weekly riding lesson which I really enjoy; it’s a nice extra dimension to school life. Every day here is great – China can be so pressured and competitive and it suits me much better here.

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL OUR CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME

L

ife at Stonar is enriched by a vibrant co-curricular programme and a competition house structure so there is always plenty going on for pupils to get involved with. Our co-curricular programme offers a range of activities for all interests, with arts and crafts clubs, music groups and sports clubs, as well as choices such as Beginner’s Japanese, Debating, Lego Robotics and Kit Car. Stonar’s Explorer Scout group gives pupils the chance to get out and about, learning skills such as campfire cookery, map reading and bush craft skills, and put those skills to the test with night hikes and campouts. Our Scouts also get out on trips to try activities such as caving or climbing, and they can embark on their Duke of Edinburgh awards through the group. All pupils from Reception upwards belong to one of our three competition houses, Kennet, Farleigh and Avebury. House competitions are run by our Sixth Form throughout the

year. Along with other senior pupils, they organise and prepare the younger pupils to take part in the hotly contested events. The house programme includes interhouse drama, music, gingerbread houses, show-jumping, public speaking and much more, ensuring that everyone gets a chance to contribute. Boarders activities are scheduled every weekend and include a number of trips open to day pupils with recent excursions including go-karting, the New Forest Water Park, white water rafting in Cardiff and trampolining at AirHop.

New challenges are on offer to all. Learning to ride and look after a horse can be hugely rewarding.

53

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

From football to Dragon’s Den, Stonar has an enormous range of lunchtime, after-school and evening activities. Everyone in the Senior School chooses at least two after-school clubs per week. The choice is diverse; we always take pupils’ interests and suggestions on board.

There are plenty of opportunities for adventure and outdoor challenges.

54

At Stonar you will do more, and do better, than you had ever imagined – in the classroom and in all the other activities on offer, from sports and arts to clubs and societies.

55

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

The Arts

Pupils are given every chance to discover and express their own interpretations of the world around them. Our modern, well-equipped studios provide opportunities to work in a range of media including fine art, photography, ceramics and textiles.

56

57

The Arts Our busy music department encourages pupils to develop an appreciation of and confidence in all musical genres. The wide ranging programme of musical activities, in school and beyond, enables everyone to participate whether this is as part of the Chamber Choir, classical ensembles, rock concerts or musical theatre performances. Specialist music teachers provide instrumental and vocal tuition and there will be plenty of opportunities to take music exams and perform. Dance can be taken as a GCSE option, an exhilarating and challenging course which teaches both dance creation and performance. There are also opportunities to dance outside of the curriculum, and the inter-house dance competition is always a highlight.

58

Drama at Stonar is inspirational and ambitious. Pupils will take part in productions and public events, performing to a variety of audiences. A specialist drama teacher coaches those who are keen to take Speech and Drama qualifications. Groups and individuals regularly perform outside of school, notably at the Mid Somerset Festival where we have an excellent track record. Drama is taught in a way that develops pupils’ confidence to perform and their creativity to entertain, move and challenge audiences. For those who don’t pick drama as a curriculum option, there are still opportunities to get involved, with a main Senior School production each year, inter-house drama and a key stage 3 production. 59

Sport

The school is excellent at identifying particularly talented athletes and giving them opportunities to test themselves at a higher level

Stonar has a long tradition of developing talented sports performers who go on to represent their county and Regional Performance Centres. They are given the opportunity to stretch themselves and develop further by representing teams higher up in the school. 63

I

n addition to Physical Education and Games lessons, there is an impressive range of extra-curricular sports, including including Hockey, Netball, Football, Cricket, Rounders, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Dance, Badminton, Fitness, Orienteering, Zumba, Basketball, Volleyball and Trampolining. Additionally, as part of the NACE Schools group, pupils have the opportunity to participate each year

64

in the NACE Schools Olympics. Up to 200 pupils from partner schools compete in a range of sporting events, hosted by one of the schools in the group. We also draw upon strong contacts with clubs, including Bradford-on-Avon Swimming Club, Bradford-on-Avon Rugby Club, Melksham Football Club, Corsham Cricket Club Bradford Town FC and Holt Netball.

Sport

We try to instil core values within all our pupils that are not only fundamental to sport but also all other aspects of life; commitment, respect, integrity, resilience and sportsmanship. 65

Boys’ SPORTS It is important that whilst we grow the number of boys in the school they are able to continue accessing a competitive and broad sports programme that enables talented athletes to achieve their potential. Whilst continuing to nurture our talented performers we ensure that every pupil in the school regardless of their ability has access to a broad curriculum that enables them to develop and grow. Pupils receive a strong grounding across many sporting disciplines in the prep school and will build on this in the senior school, through a comprehensive inter-school fixture programme and coaching that enables pupils of all needs and abilities to progress..

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

Pupils have been riding at Stonar for nearly 100 years, longer than at any other boarding school.

Stonar Equestrian

With such longevity, extensive BHS highly commended training facilities and outstanding equestrian staff, Stonar Equestrian offers an unrivalled riding education alongside the academic programme and is a UK centre of excellence. 68

69

Stonar Equestrian

Riding is available at all levels from complete beginners to international competitors. You can ride for pleasure, develop discipline-specific skills, train to compete or take equine qualifications to lead to an equine career. Our coaching philosophy underpins each rider’s progress: every rider firstly gains a thorough grounding, a correct position and

70

a correctly trained, happy horse. We create individual development plans for more advanced riders, enhanced with regular clinics delivered by specialists and Olympians. As an official Pony Club Centre, pupils are able to work towards Pony Club attainment tests and compete in Pony Club inter-branch competitions.

Bella

YEAR 11 RIDER Bella, who joined Stonar in Year 8 is now in Year 11. Bella is engaged on the Rider Development Programme and also stables her horses, Pixie and Daisy here at Stonar. When I started on the Rider Development Programme, I was only jumping 60cm and lacked confidence. I loaned a school pony, Seth, and we progressed together. Now, I’m competing in the British Eventing BE90 classes and looking ahead to the BE100s. I’ve competed at ISODE and came second individually in the Dauntsey’s NSEA competition and was part of the winning team. I also enjoy taking part in the weekly Accumulator, and am currently leading the show-jumping accumulator! I’ve completed my full BHS Stage 1 and will be sitting my Stage 2 in April. The lessons are great. Everyone wants to do well of course, but the group lessons aren’t competitive. And you get constant feedback in the individual lessons which really helps you know what you have to do to improve. I also enjoy the free riding you can do in the evenings when the arena isn’t busy. I’m planning on taking an equestrian career path after school. As well as completing my BHS stage 2, I’ll be taking A Levels in Biology, PE and Business so I’ll have a good base for whatever I choose to do. I love boarding! I really like the staff – there isn’t a single one I don’t like - and the atmosphere and activities in Hart are lots of fun. The Sunday run with Mr Noad is great, and I’ve also really enjoyed some of the trips. I always like the Bath shopping trips, but the New Forest Water Park was a particularly great trip last year. If I was describing Stonar, I’d say that it’s small, but there’s a wide variety of people here and lots of extra things you can do.

71

Stonar Equestrian

Facilities include a floodlit Olympicsized outdoor school, a 20m  x  40m indoor school, two full sets of BSJA show jumps, a cross-country schooling field and an off-road hacking track across our 80-acre country estate. We have stabling on-site for 70 horses, and you can bring your own horse (from Year 5 onwards), loan a school horse or simply have a weekly lesson. See our website for further details: www.stonarschool.com

COMPETITIONS Stonar & External

W

e hold internal weekly dressage and show-jumping competitions which run as accumulators throughout the school year. There are also inter-house riding competitions and an annual show for riders who do not own or loan a pony. In December, the Christmas Show is hugely popular and fun for all. We offer opportunities to take part in tetrathlon and run a range of equestrian trips. Each week, we take a limited number of riders to compete at the nearby West Wilts Equestrian Centre, one of the top equestrian venues in the South West; we book the transport and a member of Stonar Equestrian staff accompanies the pupils.

74

Stonar fields dressage, show jumping and arena XC teams and individuals in eight National Schools’ Equestrian Association (NSEA) qualifiers annually, leading up to the NSEA Championships in the autumn. The Inter Schools One Day Event Championships (ISODE) were established at Stonar in 1988, and every year schools come from all over the UK to compete. Classes cater for minis and juniors at the Mini ISODE in May, through to an FEI Pony class at the Senior ISODE in September.

A RIDING Education

Stonar Equestrian is a British Horse Society (BHS) ‘Highly Commended’ training and examination centre and an official Pony Club Centre. You can be a member of the Pony Club, work towards Pony Club attainment tests and compete in Pony Club competitions. In the Senior School you can choose to pursue our unique Rider Development Programme - a long-term development plan that is integrated into the school day and which includes a clear pathway of learning, incorporating Pony Club and British Horse Society examinations. It is led by the Director of Riding and an experienced BHS qualified team of instructors and yard managers. From Year 11 you can be prepared for examinations leading to the British Horse Society Assistant Instructor’s certificate (BHSAI). This recognised qualification within the equine industry is classed as an International Instructor Level 1. The course is tailored to suit individual needs. In the Sixth Form it is also possible to pursue other equestrian vocational qualifications alongside your A Levels. You can discuss this with us when the time comes to choose your subject options.

UKCC Qualifications for Sixth Form riders The UKCC are taught through a mixture of theory and practical sessions. Students completing Level 2 will hold a certificate which qualifies them to teach.
