Barb Murphy has lived her whole life in the Pakenham area. She remembers when the town was full of farms, orchards and dirt roads. Barb’s family has been in the town for over 100 years. She brought her two children up in Pakenham and daughter, Libby Drake, is continuing the tradition raising her children, Evie and Archie, at Pakenham Upper. In this special 12 page wrap, Barb and Libby talk about their family’s connection to Pakenham and what they love about the town as it evolves into a thriving, modern suburb. See inside for a wrap-up of what is happening on the development front as well as special messages and offers from key advertisers.

Housing, business booms Business activity is ramping up in Pakenham to cater for the town’s booming population. Just last week plans were announced for a new Pakenham Care Precinct, earmarked for a hilltop parcel of land on the Princes Highway previously owned by the Visser family. and used for their fencing business. Investment firm C2 Capital has unveiled plans for the site, which will include a GP clinic, cafe, gym, spa, food outlet, radiology and a childcare centre that will cater for 164 kids. Three double-storey buildings will be developed with 172 car spaces on half a hectare of land. Aldi has also unveiled plans for a new $4 million store on the corner of Slattery Place and Henry Street. The new supermarket will encompass 77-79 and 81 Henry Street/ It will be the eighth major supermarket in Pakenham, competing against three Coles and three Woolworths stores. As part of the proposal, an adjoining car park will be developed. It has not yet been confirmed how many spaces it will include. Council planners are currently undertaking a preliminary assessment of the development. Plans are also in the wind for a $43 million “mega-development” on the Princes Highway, rumoured to house Kmart and a cinema complex. Cardinia Shire confirmed it received the planning application last month, but it has not yet been assessed by council officers. The site, earmarked for 900 Princes Highway, has been described as one of the most ambitious retail projects ever undertaken in Pakenham. It would be built in front of the Cardinia Life swimming centre, accessible from Olympic Way.
An artist's impression of the new care precinct. The new McDonald's on the corner of Bald Hill Road and Kooweerup Road is one of many new developments occurring in Pakenham. According to the application, the complex would include dining venues, shops, a supermarket, discount department store, medical centre and cinema facilities. Lakeside Residents Group head Tony O’Hara said it was an extremely exciting development in what has been a long-running saga. “I’m glad to see a retail development rather than housing go in there,” he said. “It’s a nice big block of land that could really take the suburb to the next level.
The Great Australian Bakehouse, Pakenham
“There will be plenty of conspiracy theories about what might go in there, but I’m sure everybody is hoping for a Kmart.” Kmart Australia could not be reached for comment. New shops and services will be needed in coming years as the massive Pakenham East development comes online. The proposed Ridglea Estate will include approximately 7,100 dwellings catering for up to 22,000 residents.
The estate, boasting 3,500 lots, will extend the current township to the east. Planning for the 15-year project is well underway, with developer Parklea anticipating the first land releases in 2020. In addition to housing, Ridglea Estate will include a town centre, convenience centre, two sporting reserves, two government primary schools, a non-government primary school, a government secondary school, parks and waterways.

Barb Murphy, her grand-daughter, Evie, daughter Libby Drake and grandson, Archie, are proud of their long association with Pakenham. 183765 ham Girls football team and this year her little brother Archie started his football career with Pakenham Auskick. Libby is secretary of The Pakenham Junior Football Club. Libby said her father John “Jack” Drake and her uncle Bill Drake were also committed members of the the Pakenham Football Club. Bill Drake was regarded by many as one of Pakenham's greatest coaches and players winning several premierships. Jack was a Life Member and section one player for the Pakenham Tennis Club.

"I went to help out for six weeks and stayed 29 years," said Barb, laughing. Libby was also employed at Safeway parttime after school. She joined the management team after finishing her studies. She only recently left the company after 27 years' service. Barb and Libby were both active members of The Pakenham Lions Netball Club during their teenage and adult years. Libby's daughter Evie is now carrying on the family tradition. Last year Evie became the fourth generation of the Drake/Jackson clan to play netball for Pakenham. Evie also plays for the Under 14 Paken-

When Barb Murphy was a child she remembers clambering aboard her billy cart, pointing it down hill on Ahern Road where her family farmed and flying across the Princes Highway ending up in bush on the other side of the main thoroughfare through town. "That was the only way to stop," she said, laughing. Barb's family has been in Pakenham for more than a century. Her mother Joyce Reid was the second youngest daughter of James and Margaret Jackson's 14 children. Today only two of those 14 children remain alive, Margaret Maher and Dorothy Rogers. Margaret and James owned and ran The Pakenham General Store & Bakery in Main Street from 1927 until 1952. The children would all help in the store with Joyce delivering the bread and milk on horse back across the town. Joyce's brothers, Ray “Cracker”Jackson and Norman “Widow” Jackson, are remembered as being two of Pakenham's greatest footballers. Older sister Lorna Jackson (now Anderson) started The Pakenham Netball Club in The West Gippsland League well over 80 years ago. Barb attended Pakenham Consolidated School and then Dandenong Girls High School. She remembers catching a "red rattler" train to school. "Once upon a time you knew everyone in town. Someone new would arrive and it would go through the town like wildfire." After having her two children, Paul and Libby, Barb started work at Robinson's SSW until the supermarket was bought out by Woolworths and moved to its current location in Pakenham Square.
Libby said Jack used to run weekend discos in the late 70s and early 80s at The Highway Hotel, which was called the 'Top Pub' back in the day. His mobile disco, called Disco Duck, was a hit in the town for years with people queuing to get in. Libby's grandfather Bunny Drake was known simply as Mr Pakenham. He gave so much to the community he was awarded the British Empire Medal. Both Barb and Libby are proud of their family's long association with Pakenham. "Our favourite things about Pakenham are definitely our rich family history, friends new and old and community spirit around the local sporting clubs," Libby said. "There are so many opportunities for kids and parents in the area from sport and recreation to arts and culture. "There are more and more parks and open spaces popping up for families and some wonderful restaurants and cafes are opening, not only in Pakenham, but in Cardinia as a whole." Both Libby and Barb defend Pakenham to detractors telling them not to believe the "social media hate campaign against the town". "Lately Pakenham has copped a fair amount of crime and bad press but unfortunately people are pretty quick to judge," Libby said. "If people stepped away from their social media they would find locals in the community working hard, trying to make a difference and wanting what’s best for their town. "There are a lot of local passionate people here who get very disheartened when they hear and read rubbish about their town. "Pakenham is a great place to be raising a family and I have nothing but great memories of the little country town that it once was."

Mr Mattei started with the company 18 years ago as a taxi driver and has seen drastic change Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS across the municipality in that time. 183862
On the road Des Mattei, of Pakenham Taxis, has opened up on how Pakenham has changed through the eyes of a taxi driver. Mr Mattei started with the company 18 years ago as a driver and has seen drastic change across the municipality in that time. "I remember when the highway went through Pakenham the traffic was bad," Mr Mattei said. "Then when new freeway opened it was quite good for a few years, but now it's gotten really bad again. "Main Street is not too bad, you can usually get through there in few minutes even when it's busy. "But Racecourse Road and McGregor Road are terrible, and there's really no detours available so there's no choice but to sit in traffic." Pakenham Taxis has been safely delivering passengers around Pakenham since 1946.
Founder Reg Maloney started with one car, a 1946 Ford sedan. He successfully built up the business, handing it over to the Dineen family in 1997. The Garfield-based dad said 70 per cent of Pakenham Taxi trips are within Cardinia shire, serving Officer, Pakenham, Pakenham South, Pakenham Upper, Nar Nar Goon, Maryknoll, Tynong, Garfield, Garfield North and Vervale. Everybody who works for the firm also lives in Cardinia shire. While Mr Mattei admits congestion is having an impact on his customers, he believes the taxi industry still holds the monopoly locally. "We'll still be around when Uber all go home which seems to happen on a Friday and Saturday night. We are busy between 2am and 3am in the morning. "We are always here and we always do the best we can."

While the News was at Annika R Hair for a photo shoot with owner Annika Ross, Pakenham local Amy Dubocanin bustled in the door with her two little girls. Sophia, four, and Daniella, three, needed hair cuts and Amy was delighted that she now had a local salon in the Cardinia Lakes Estate. Amy grew up in Pakenham (her maiden name was Buchtmann) and, like many young parents in the town, she thinks Pakenham is a great place to raise her own girls. She is excited that Cardinia Lakes is developing its own infastructure and retail hub meaning she doesn’t have to go far for things like groceries, bakery items, take-away and, now thanks to Annika Ross, hair cuts. Amy works at the Cardinia Lakes Early Learning Centre and the girls will go to the pri-
mary school within the estate. Amy herself attended Pakenham Hills Primary School and Pakenham Secondary College. She has seen enormous change in the town, but welcomes the development and influx of new residents. "I like the growing atmosphere. It's nice to see it change." She said her girls love the new playground in John Street near the library. As for the future, Amy would love to see Kmart open a store in Pakenham and hopes Spotlight will also come to town. "I think the town is evolving quite well. There is still a little bit of country about it which is nice."

Annika Ross is symbolic of a new generation of small business owners putting their faith in Pakenham. A little over a month ago Annika opened Annika R Hair in the Cardinia Lakes Estate. A hairdresser for six years, Annika said she was excited to branch out into her own enterprise and be part of the Pakenham business community. Annika grew up in Meeninyan in South Gippsland and moved to Pakenham with her partner. They live in Cardinia Lakes. With a wide smile and bright blue hair, Annika is certainly hard to miss. “I like to be different, can’t you tell,“ she said, laughing. “Every time you see me I will be different. I have no self control.“ Annika said her vision was to create a salon where clients could not only receive a great hair cut or blow dry, but also relax and take time out for a chat and a cup of coffee. “If people want to spend some time sitting at the table in the front window that’s fine. They can read, eat, chat. I want people to feel comfortable.“ The large salon is a stylish blend of modern industrial with dark wooden fixtures and brass-coloured pendant lighting. Annika welcomes clients of all ages. She particularly likes razor cutting and creative colouring. “I love razor cutting. It gives hair a differ-

The mother and son duo at Tour Local, Joanne and Raymond Staindl.
Family tours Tour Local epitomises the many Pakenham businesses which are proudly family owned. The company was founded in 2008 by Joanne Staindl, when she realised her dream of owning her own tour company. When son Raymond joined the company in 2016, Tour Local soon began to grow into the transfer and charter areas. Last year Tour Local won the best Home Based Business category in the Casey Cardinia Business Awards. Joanne and Raymond provide “touring solutions” for individuals or groups of any size. “We also provide charter services for airport transfers, weddings, corporate events,” Joanne said. “Our real specialty is writing and delivering tailor made tours of any length, from a few hours to many days away, for groups of any size, again from two to 102 plus.” To keep tours cost affordable yet focussed
on quality service delivery, Joanne is very much hands-on with the day-to-day touring often acting as a driver, tour leader or, on occasions, filling the role of both when she is driving one of the companyowned vehicles. Tour Local is expanding into the corporate sector offering to arrange corporate events and training. Another growth market for Tour Local has been into charter and destination transfers, for example to Melbourne Airport, and functions such as weddings, birthdays and other special events. Joanne said to stand out from competitors her team was prepared to work 24/7. “If someone needs to get to the airport in the middle of the night, we will pick them up from home and allow this to happen. “Tour Local prides itself on working with groups in such a way that the stresses involved with achieving minimum numbers to travel are now often a thing of the past.“

The eye care specialists OPSM Pakenham has been proudly serving the local community for five years. Clinic owner and optometrist Theo Charalambous and his team have spent this time not only caring for people’s eyes, but also striving to give back to the Pakenham community. “We do a lot of screenings at places like local schools,” Mr Charalambous said. “At the start of the year we went to Pakenham College and we tested everyone in the school for free ... because it’s scary how many kids need glasses and don’t know it. “We picked up multiple kids who couldn’t read or write and they thought they had learning difficulties but it was actually because they couldn’t see - so we got them glasses and it’s just changing their lives.” OPSM Pakenham is dedicated to providing customers with world-class service and technology, as well as leading eye health advice, solutions and recommendations. The team is trained to detect potential eye problems before customers experience symptoms, enabling early diagnosis and treatment that can help protect vision. They also undergo regular professional development and training from the OPSM Institute of Learning. “80% of blindness is preventable,” Mr Charalambous said. “There are many diseases out there ... and if some of them aren’t corrected before a certain age they can lead to permanent vision loss.

So we are making sure that there is no disease there that could cause blindness in the future. Because most of the time we can intervene and stop it progressing into something that’s permanent.” OPSM Pakenham offers a range of deals including packages for kid’s glasses. The store also stocks French lenses and Italian frames and accepts all health funds. In addition, almost all eye-tests are bulkbilled so customers receive no out-of-pocket costs. OPSM Pakenham is located at 21/18-36 Lakeside Boulevard in Pakenham. For more information, phone 5940 5858 or visit www. opsm.com.au.
Caring and compassionate When faced with having to make funeral arrangements, most people have no prior experience in organising such an event and have little idea of what to do. Which is why the staff at David W. Bull Funeral Directors are available to assist 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. “The initial call made to the staff at David W. Bull Funeral Directors will enable them to begin caring for your family,” David W. Bull Funeral Directors administration manager Melissa Collins said. “The first meeting to discuss the funeral arrangements with David W. Bull Funeral Directors can be at their funeral homes located in Pakenham, Cranbourne and Drouin or in the comfort of your home.” At these appointments David W. Bull Funeral Directors guide family members and assist them with the funeral arrangements they desire.
“While some people may have a fairly clear knowledge of the arrangements they want to make, others may want to consider the range of alternatives before making any decisions,” Melissa said. “The staff at David W. Bull Funeral Directors provide a professional, warm and caring service to families, helping them take the time to arrange the most appropriate way of saying goodbye to their loved one. “We feel planning a special funeral with significance helps family and friends who are left behind to reflect on memories, sharing a final farewell with others and also to celebrate their loved one’s life.” David W. Local jobs a must The ALP candidate for Bass, Jordan Crugnale, says she understands the struggles facing local families because her family faces them too. Ms Crugnale lives in the electorate with her partner, Mark, and their two young sons. Like many local people, she has faced a daily commute to the city for her work. It’s no surprise that strengthening local economies to create local jobs is at the top of her advocacy list. “Too many people in Pakenham have to travel long distances for work or study, which adds to the financial burden and diminishes their quality of life, especially their family life," Ms Crugnale said. Ms Crugnale said while the State Government’s investment in the Pakenham/Cranbourne line was already improving train services to the city, she will push for station upgrades, level crossing removals and more bus services linking with VLine and Metro services to the city and to other service centres in the region. She also promises to advocate for accessible health services, quality schools and colleges, ef-

A well resourced community As the boundaries of Pakenham have grown over recent years, so too has its strong sense of community believes Bass MP Brian Paynter. "When times get tough, or whenever people move to a new area, it is vitally important that people can easily access the services and support that they need," Mr Paynter said. "All residents should have the opportunity to find nearby employment, to be able to shop and spend their leisure time in their local area. "It is a priority for me that we should all work together to ensure that the services and infrastructure that support our community as well resourced. To this end, I have been lob-

bying strongly in Parliament for improved rail crossings, road duplications and the need for an additional secondary college in Pakenham. "I would welcome your feedback and encourage you to visit my website www.brianpayntermp.com.au and have your say. "Connecting socially is crucial for all of us, whether that be at school, at church, in a community activity or on the sporting field. Liberal Member for Gembrook Brad Battin says he is proud to represent part of Pakenham. "As a lifelong Berwick resident, I have witnessed firsthand Pakenham’s transformation from quiet rural town to busy Melbourne suburb. Pakenham may look different, but I think it is still the same at heart - hard-working families having a go, although most are probably now driving up the freeway or catching a train to work instead of working on a family farm. "The Gembrook electorate includes the Pakenham Hills north of the Princes Highway. I have spoken to many residents over the years – the congestion of Pakenham’s two main thoroughfares, McGregor Road and Racecourse Road, has been a huge issue for many. "The Member for Bass, Pakenham bornand-bred Brian Paynter, has secured commitments to fix these two roads. An elected Liberal Government will remove the Bald Hill Road roundabout with a grade separation, creating a continuous flow of traffic, and duplicate McGregor Road at the railway line, removing the current bottleneck. "Pakenham has changed and its arterial roads need to reflect that. Only a Liberal Government will get Pakenham moving again."

In a self-fulfilling prophecy, commuters have opted to board at the newer Cardinia Road Station, dragging the parking pains from Pakenham Station along with them. Shoppers have defended Lakeside Square's decision to enforce the regulations, saying it is not their responsibility to ease the parking burden for rail workers and commuters.

Tradies undertaking works on the Pakenham rail line are crying foul over a lack of parking at the Cardinia Road station precinct, forced to "constantly" move their cars and risk a multitude of fines. Their grievances have been exacerbated by a recent restriction at Lakeside Square Shopping Centre, reducing all-day parking to just three hours. The change reportedly came into effect at the same time construction commenced. Worker Wayne Schembri told the Gazette it was almost impossible for those undertaking construction to get a parking spot before 7am. "They restricted parking to three hours in Lakeside Square knowing that half the station car park on that side is taken up by construction workers," he said. "It's a blatant cash grand when more than three-quarters of the shop parking is empty every day." Cardinia Shire confirmed the regulation and enforcement of parking at Lakeside Square fell under the jurisdiction of the property owner. "There is no written agreement with Council under Section 90D of the Road Safety Act 1986 for enforcement of the parking regulations on this private property," council's manager of development and compliance services, Debbie Tyson said. However, the council has also been criticised for not providing temporary parking to those undertaking station works. "The private owners can do whatever, but the council has a responsibility to provide parking for us, while we undertake works that are going to help the suburb," one worker said, while

Lend hand at riding centre By Kyra Gillespie A volunteer-run disabled riding school forced off their land by developers are looking for "people power" to help them get their new centre up and running. Last month the Officer RDA (Riding Develops Abilities) Centre was shut down after the land they were running their centre on was taken over by developers. While the centre knew the move was "imminent" they said they didn't expect such a swift and sudden departure. With the help of Cardinia Shire Councillor Brett Owen, they have since secured a parcel of land to lease on Five Mile Road, Pakenham. While the not-for-profit organisation is grateful for the new home, the land has little to no existing infrastructure. To get the Riding for the Disabled Centre back up and running they need to build an arena, carparking, fencing, a club room, office and stables. There's no power or water connected at the site. All that currently stands on the property is a few run-down sheds, some rubbish and broken fences. "We always knew it was imminent - the land was always up for development - but now have a mammoth task ahead of us in setting up a new centre with limited funds," Centre Coordinator Kay Murray said. "It's going to be a huge job and of course we want to get our riders back as quickly as possible. "We are trying to enlist the help of more volunteers, particularly those with planning or construction backgrounds to help us get back up and running." The centre was originally established on Mary Street in 2006, before it moved to its Officer South site in 2008 which would become home for the next 10 years.

The centre is entirely volunteer-run, save a handful of riding instructors who receive a small payment. As a centre under the branch of RDA Victoria they are responsible for all running costs, including the provision of equipment, riding boots and helmets, as well as the horses and the cost of their care. Riders pay a small fee to take lessons, all of which is funnelled back into the maintenance of the centre. The sudden uprooting of the business has forced clients and their families to look elsewhere while the new centre gets developed. The horses have all had to be privately leased. "Without our riders there's no money at all

coming in, which in turn makes it harder," Kay said. "We are so grateful to council for finding this land for us, but we know it's going take more work than we can manage or afford on our own. "We're looking at running a working bee in the future, but for now any assistance - either financial or manual - would be greatly appreciated. Centre president Victor Little said the centre provides a range of support for those living with a disability and their families. "The horses have both a physical and emotional benefit for these kids and adults," Victor said. "Not only is it good for them physically, but it helps them improve their fine motor skills and gives them a place where they can socialise with others.

"It also gives them a freedom they have never experienced before; many of them are physically limited, but on horseback they move about freely and forget about their disability for a while. "Seeing the smiles on their faces really makes this whole thing worthwhile." Gembrook MP Brad Battin, an avid supporter of the organisation, has backed their call for help. "They're a great organisation and we know they need community support," Mr Battin said. "The best thing about Riding for the Disabled is that it gives everyone the opportunity to be their best. That's what it's all about. "The current site requires a lot of work for the long term and a helping hand can make all the difference." The centre is looking for new people to join their committee. Their Annual General Meeting will be in October, with the date yet to be confirmed. "Looking to the future we want to make sure the centre is going to be progressive," Secretary Kathy Cook said. "The sooner we can get back up and running the better. "We'd love to have some people power to help us get there."

NEWS IN BRIEF Helping those most vulnerable A successful suicide prevention program will be rolled out at Casey Hospital. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced on Tuesday 14 July the State Government's successful Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) initiative would be expanded to six new hospital and health service sites, including Casey Hospital. The HOPE initiative provides practical support and follow up for people leaving hospital after a suicide attempt. Assertive outreach workers also work with families, friends and carers so they can better support their loved one during this critical time. Mr Perera said "The HOPE program has already helped hundreds of Victorians who have attempted suicide and need an intensive response in the months following, which we know can be a period of heightened risk."

Four teenagers have been charged over an alleged carjacking of a woman in Hutton Street, Dandenong - followed by a shop theft and assault in Narre Warren. The 45-year-old victim was approached by three females as she stood at the boot of her white Mazda CX3 just before 5pm on 7 August, police say. As she got in the driver's seat, she was allegedly struck in the face by one of the teenagers and pulled from the car. The offenders then drove away in the car, police say. She was charged with robbery, theft, burglary, obtaining property by deception and drug trafficking. The woman is remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 24 August.
Casey cracks down on tobacco retailers The City of Casey has caught six tobacco retailers selling cigarettes to minors (a person under 18 years), as part of a test purchasing program undertaken by council's Environmental Health Team. These results are a substantial increase compared to previous years, with two sales recorded in 2017 and three sales in 2016. Retailers and person's selling tobacco to a minor who are found to be breaking the law risk receiving infringements ranging from $645 to $9671, prosecution in a magistrates court and/or a fine ranging from $19,343 to $96,714 and the loss of their right to sell tobacco. City of Casey Mayor Councillor Geoff Ablett
said that council's Environmental Health Officers undertake routine tobacco test purchasing across the municipality, specifically targeting tobacco licenced premises and other venues to ensure strict compliance with the Tobacco Act 1987. "It is important to build an awareness with our retailers, so they understand that not only is selling cigarettes to a minor breaking the law, but also that eight out of ten new smokers start as a child and are fifteen times more likely to die of lung cancer than non-smokers," Mr Ablett said. "All that retailers have to do to comply with the act is to ask a person for proof of age before
selling to someone. "We were pleased to find that 13 retailers approached during the program did not sell cigarettes to minors and were compliant with the act." Tobacco retailers are encouraged to review the tobacco retailers guide and resources available on the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) tobacco reform website to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities when selling tobacco in Victoria. People concerned about retailers selling to minors should contact council on 9705 5200 or the DHHS Tobacco Information Line on 1300 136 775. Information on tobacco laws is available at www.health.vic.gov.au/tobaccoreforms.
DHHS provide funding to councils, via the Municipal Association of Victoria for this program. The Tobacco Test Purchasing Program is conducted by council's Environmental Health Services contractor, Kernow Environmental Services P/L.

Say on rail road riddance By Kyra Gillespie Cardinia Shire Council is welcoming community feedback on the proposed closure of the intersection at Railway Avenue and Racecourse Road, Pakenham. Railway Avenue runs along the railway line on the north side of the train station, between Main Street and Racecourse Road. The proposal recommends to permanently close Railway Avenue at the intersection of Racecourse Road in Pakenham, once the traffic lights begin operating at the intersection of Henry Street and Racecourse Road. Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said council is doing a lot in this area to manage growth and future traffic and the proposed closure is one part of the broader picture to improve road safety and traffic within the Pakenham town centre. "The proposed closure would provide many benefits and also ties in with the development of the Pakenham Parking Plan and a great deal of advocating to the Victorian Government and VicRoads for improved road and rail network conditions around Pakenham," Cr Ross said. The recommendation has come as a result of investigations into the road safety and traffic flow at the site and addresses the longstanding concerns of road users. "The proposed closure, along with the new traffic lights at Henry Street and Racecourse Road, will greatly improve safety for road users. Currently the intersection's poor sight lines make it very difficult for motorists to safely navigate through the intersection, particularly at busy times and when the railway crossing is in use. "It's scary, but we've actually heard reports of motorists driving on the wrong side of the road to access Railway Avenue when the level crossing boom gates are down. Unfortunately, common sense doesn't always prevail when
Community consultation closes on 7 September. 183120 people are time poor and frustrated." Developers, in consultation with VicRoads, are currently installing traffic lights at the new Henry Street and Ascot Park Drive intersection. Henry Street will be opened to traffic at Racecourse Road once these signals are operational. This is expected to occur by the end of 2018. Cr Ross said the upgraded Henry Street intersection will provide improved access into Pakenham town centre and better safety for motorists, as well as having the potential to increase public transport reliability in the town centre.
"Henry Street provides a more direct route than Railway Avenue, from the east into Pakenham town centre. It also has the capacity to accommodate Railway Avenue's current traffic and additional traffic from future developments because it was specifically designed to act as a collector street, diverting traffic from local streets to arterial roads. "Under the proposal, the bus services currently using Railway Avenue will use Henry Street as well, which would better regulate the routes and increase public transport reliability." Cr Ross said the closure of the Railway Avenue intersection would also enhance Coun-
cil's advocacy efforts on behalf of the community for the removal of the level crossing at Racecourse Road. "Council has been advocating to the Victorian Government on behalf of the Pakenham community for the removal of the Racecourse Road level railway crossing. These efforts would be bolstered by the closure of the Railway Avenue intersection, as this is likely to be required before the level crossing removal could occur anyway." Need for flow on Greaves Road
Have your say on the state of local roads
By Jessica Anstice Greaves Road in Berwick during peak times is ruining neighbourhoods and preventing residents from leaving their homes due to heavy traffic congestion. John Batty works as the manager at Burdens Bathrooms, situated on Clyde Road, on the north side of the Monash Freeway. "To get home from work I turn right off Clyde Road onto Greaves Road," Mr Batty said. "Once I get home from work, I won't go back out until 7.30pm as traffic banks up along Greaves Road and it takes four or five sets of traffic lights before getting to Eden Rise. "The proposal for an on and off ramp for the Beaconsfield roundabout, that's going to come around the back of Kingsmere Estate and hook up to O'Shea Road will bring more traffic to Clyde Road and Soldiers Road." Mr Batty said the government needs to act now as Casey is the biggest growing housing corridor in the world. "They need to get rid of the level crossing," he said. "From Dandenong to Pakenham, we're still suffering with level crossing all the way through." At the beginning of March, City of Casey welcomed a VCAT order granting a permit for the construction of the Greaves Road roundabout. The development will upgrade the existing roundabout at the intersection of Greaves Road, Narre Warren South and Berwick Springs Promenade to accommodate increased traffic flows. The roundabout and associated works are integral to the upgrade of Greaves Road, allowing
for Vicroads to assume control of the road in the future and upgrade it to a four lane arterial road. As part of the roundabout construction, the Berwick Springs Estate entry feature will be relocated further south to accommodate the roundabout and associated works. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said the current small scale roundabout at the entry to Berwick Springs estate was always intended to be an interim arrangement until the duplication of Greaves Road was scheduled to commence. "The installation of this larger roundabout will work to reduce traffic congestion for both Berwick Springs residents and the broader City of Casey commuters", he said.
We’re asking for your help in getting local roads congestion on the agenda for this year’s State Election. A special poll is now open where you can nominate the worst congested road in your region. Visit starcommunity.com.au/competitions/ and then click on the link for ’Unblock the Gridlock’. In a few weeks, we’ll be compiling lists of the most congested roads and then asking you to vote for the one that needs fixing most urgently in your area. These lists will be put to the politicians and candidates and their responses printed in the paper before the election in November. Be sure to check out the poll, and if your nightmare road has not been listed here’s your chance to update the list. Keep an eye on our social media pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, too - we’ll be giving you as many chances as possible to nominate those roads. The South East deserves a better deal on roads, so make your voice heard.
"As a council we were aware of the community's attachment to the bluestone entry walls and we investigated the option of having the roundabout relocated further north to avoid impacting upon the entry, however it was deemed to not be a feasible option. "In June 2017, council held an information session that enabled residents to view the application document and interact with Council officers and representatives from Vicroads, Melbourne Water, the Victorian Planning Authority and the developer. "The proposal for the entrance will ensure that it is replicated and continues to comprise of two bluestone tiers and the planting of new oak trees to replace the boulevard canopy."

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On the 13 August the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about a Sudanese family celebrating the purchase of their very first home in Clyde North, thanks to the generosity of a joint partnership between the Jireh Foundation and the Bendigo Bank. Here is how some readers reacted online: Elizabeth Cooper: How wonderful what a great achievement Congratulations wishing them much love and happiness in their new home, their very own little piece of Australia Chantelle Renae: Happy for them all. Would love to see Bendigo Bank and all others involved contribute the same amount of money to our veterans who gave their all and receive little to nothing in return. Or maybe our farmers who are struggling and only being given a piddling loan of $12k from good ol' Turncoat. Hayley Iring: Awwww bless look how happy your children are. Mark Mathews: Good luck to them! And congrats. Mark Mathews: They have been here 12 years. I am guessing they work and have been saving also. And the grant has assisted them in getting into the house. I am guessing they also have to repay this money back to the church. Anyway as long as they are decent people which they look it from the photo and law abiding who really cares if the church assisted them? All everyone is worried about is what's in it for me? Why can't I get it? Which is sad really. Tammie Mckill: Good luck to them I wish them all the best. Is this purely just for the African community or can anybody apply? pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Council sent a letter out to residents on along Bernly Boulevard on 31 May stating 40km/h signage will be installed along the street.

Berwick Chase Primary School currently has 888 students and even with new schools in the pipeline, the school is predicted to grow for the next few years. "We encourage our students to walk, ride and scoot to school where appropriate," principal Chris Short said. "As part of this commitment the school has allowed school children to enter and exit the rear of the school adjacent to Bernly Boulevard." The land between the school and the road is currently owned by the developer who is scheduled to hand the land over to the council shortly. "We have been working with the developer to put bollards in to ensure cars are parked appropriately along Bernly Boulevard," he said. "Initially they agreed that this was required and made a commitment to install the bollards. "In our most recent correspondence they informed us that City of Casey council had informed them that the instillation of the bollards is still required however it was not a priority as this was not integral to the council's plans." The developer now has 12 months to install the bollards. "We were also informed that in council's opinion there was no official gate so the fence would be re-instated and students would no longer be able to exit through the back of the school," Mr Short said. "When the developer asked on our behalf about the school's request to put in a gravel path for all weather access the developer was told that this is not in the plans and would not be approved." School council member Matt McMaster said it is a huge safety concern as parents are

Relax, rejuvenate, succeed By Narelle Coulter In meetings with male CEOs Melanie Gleeson, the founder of Endota Spa, will sometimes cheekily ask them how many loads of washing they put on at home before attending the meeting. The answer, unsurprisingly, is usually none. “I ask that question not to be obnoxious but just to get them thinking ’oh, I didn’t do any’. (Where as) I had to do all that and get here( to the meeting). “ Ms Gleeson used the point to illustrate the difference experiences of men and their female colleagues, most of who are torn between their paid work and their unpaid caring duties at home and not feeling they are “giving 100 per cent to either“. Ms Gleeson, a married mother of two boys, was guest speaker at the fourth annual Casey Cardinia Region Women’s Business Lunch on Friday 10 August. More than 350 women, and a sprinkling of men, listened to Ms Gleeson’s inspirational story of turning $5000 on a credit card into a business which today employs over 1000 people and turns over $60 million. “When I started Endota in 2000 one of the main drivers was to create spaces or havens where people could come to have some time, especially women because we do so much,“ Ms Gleeson said. “We really need to take time to stop and recalibrate because we cannot keep giving and giving and giving when we are not filled up ourselves. “In that process of being mothers and wives and daughters, and it’s the same for the blokes in room, we sometimes forget who we are, what makes us happy and what is really important.“ Ms Gleeson said Endota was born “out of a love for making people feel better“. “Long before I had Endota, somewhere in my subconscious I understood the power of healing and touch and energy transference and what that means.“ When Ms Gleeson embarked on her Endota journey the spa industry in Australia was “very small“ and little understood. “There were only four or five spas in Australia at the time. I was working in one and I would notice that people would rush in and their shoulders would be up here,“ she said, drawing her shoulders up beside her ears. “45 minutes after treatment this would happen,“ she said, slowly lowering her shoulders. “There was a physical change as well as an emotional change that came from slowing down and taking some time. I wanted to be able to take that feeling to more people.“ Ms Gleeson and her then business partner were 26 with “ no idea of what it meant to open your own business“. They attended as many networking events as they could and walked kilometres leaflet dropping trying spread word about their vision. The permit for their first salon on the Mornington Peninsula was knocked back by the local council because objectors thought it was a brothel. “Fast forward 18 years and wellness is big business,“ Ms Gleeson said. “Endota is not a beauty business, it’s a wellness business. We slow people down, we give them care and time and that’s really really important.“ Endota as a business really took off when Ms Gleeson and her partner decided to franchise the concept and “thank goodness we did“. Today there are 110 salons across Australia owned by individual business owners who are part of the Endota “network“. “I’ve been able to work with amazing business owners, the majority of who are women, but who share our values and have invested heavily in the Endota brand,“ Ms Gleeson said. “There is nothing better in your local community than when you have a local business owner who lives and works in the community and cares for that community. That is what has helped build the Endota brand to where we are today.“ She acknowledged some negative publicity Endota received during the recent federal government inquiry into the effectiveness of the 8 STAR NEWS

Every day it reminds everyone to do business the right way“. She said shared values were central to franchising success, as was consistency. “The upsides of franchising as a business model have been amazing. A lot (of Endota franchisees) are multi-site owners. They nurture and care for their team. We also build
pathways for our team so not only can therapists become managers, but they can go on to build their own spas.“ She outlined Endota’s growth plans including new product ranges for babies and menopausal women, wellness colleges in Canberra and Docklands and a wellness hotel in Byron Bay. St Patrick’s Primary School Pakenham St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School welcomes enrolment enquiries from families residing on the Eastern side of Pakenham Parish. (East of Toomuc Creek and Toomuc Creek Road). I believe that education should centre on the individual, firstly as a member of a family, then a school and finally a parish community. Within this community (which includes students, parents, teachers, pastors and friends) each person has the right to dignity and respect, as well, of course, as the best educational experiences available. Through the development of faith in themselves, in others and in a loving God, the school endeavours to build hope for the future in each young person. Each is expected to seek to fulfill his or her own potential – be it academic, creative, physical, social or religious – to the fullest possible extent. Challenging each young person as an individual, in every possible way, leads naturally to this end. The participation and involvement of parents in defining, sharing and developing this vision and process, is a vital link in what might be termed the ‘educational chain’. I invite you to come and meet with me to discuss how St Patrick’s may help your child. Having taught and been Principal in several different countries and in all the Eastern States of Australia, I have been at St Patrick’s for the last fourteen years. I have overseen the modernisation of the school and the planning and building of a second Parish school. I am proud of St Patrick’s more than one hundred and fifty years of education provision in the Pakenham community. Mick O’Brien. Principal.

The types of jobs available to our students in the future may not even currently exist. So how do we equip students with the best skills for life? Skills that they can apply in any context? Beaconhills College is at the forefront of holistic education in our region, with a strong emphasis on encouraging each student to develop a ‘growth mindset’. We want our students to be knowledgeable, adaptive in their learning, focused, take responsibility for their own work, use feedback to improve and work collaboratively with others. These skills are essential for their future. Applying these skills to help others, both locally and abroad, is an important part of our education philosophy. That’s why you will see Beaconhills students from Early Learning through to Year 12 actively volunteering and fundraising for charities such the 4Cs food bank, Relay for Life, schools we support in East Timor, Bangladesh and many other charities. Justice is in the pipeline By Brendan Rees Residents that will be affected by APA's proposed gas pipeline from Pakenham to Crib point are being invited to an information session this month. A number of landowners including those in Devon Meadows are unhappy with a proposal from energy heavyweight APA to build a 60 kilometre pipeline that will cut through their properties. They have also been approached by APA to discuss potential acquisition and compensation. Duffy and Simon Lawyers in Pakenham have been instructed by several land owners and occupiers to act on their behalf, to review their rights to object to the proposed pipeline, as well as to review the proposed compensation being discussed by APA Group. The information session is set to take place at Cardinia Public Hall (2401 Ballarto Road, Cardinia) on Thursday 23 August at 6pm. Principal of Duffy and Simon, Damien McKenna will discuss pipeline acquisitions and the rights of the land owners and occupiers. He said there is a set process that APA must follow under the Pipelines Act 2005 prior to construction of the pipeline starting. This included a community consultation plan, a pipeline licence application, the acquiring of the property and the issuing of a licence/decision to reject the application. "We are taking this opportunity to invite both owners and occupiers of land affected by the current gas pipeline route to a free information evening held by Duffy and Simon to advise them of their rights regarding APA Group's proposal," Mr McKenna said. "If you are the occupier of the land under a lease or licence, we ask that you extend this invite to the owner of the land," he added.
Senior Associate Matthew Abraham of Duffy & Simon lawyers in Pakenham is encouraging residents to attend the information night. 184007 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Senior Associate Matthew Abraham said: "Duffy and Simon have represented landholders and occupiers in a range of past acquisitions to ensure that any offer reflects not only the true market value of the land, but also the
ongoing loss of profits and costs incurred by landholders as a result of the loss of the land." Guest speakers at the session including director of Urbis Brian Dudakov, who will be discussing valuation of any land easement or
land acquired for the pipeline as well as William Henderson, Senior Consultant of RMCG Consultants, who will discuss the assessment of impact on agricultural land, business and loss of profits arising from the pipeline.

Brain cancer STEM visit A visit from a leading brain cancer researcher from the CSIRO has inspired students in Hampton Park to pursue their dreams in the field of science. Dr Lars Esser, a postdoctoral research fellow at CSIRO, who works in the field of brain cancer theranostics in collaboration with Monash Biomedical Imaging, dropped in to Rivergum Primary School on Friday 10 August as part of CSIRO's STEM in schools event. The day formed part of National Science Week in helping schools celebrate careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Federal member for Holt Anthony Bryne also visited Rivergum Primary to engage with students about STEM careers and to learn more about Dr Esser's research. "The students and I were privileged to hear from Dr Lars Esser about his important research work with Nanotechnology to help find a cure for Brain Cancer," said Mr Byrne. "We wish Dr Esser every success with his research and hope he finds a cure to this lifethreatening disease. Hopefully after this event more students will be encouraged to learn more about different types of STEM subjects, and exciting STEM careers that lie ahead."
While some smaller kidney stones may pass, South Eastern Urology Urologist Philip McCahy warned that others can be so large that they will not pass and require medical attention. “Up to 15 per cent of the population may develop these stones which can cause recurrent urine infections, and, if left untreated, kidney damage or failure,” Mr McCahy said. Mr McCahy stated that there are three main treatment options for those suffering from large kidney stones. The first is shockwave therapy, a process where external shock waves are focussed on the stone and break it up into small pieces. “We are lucky in the Casey-Cardinia region in that Casey Hospital offers a service unique to Australia with day case, no anaesthetic lithotripsy,” Mr McCahy added. The next treatment is Ureterorenoscopy, a procedure where a very small flexible telescope is passed through natural passages into the kidney where stones are vaporised with a laser. “The urologists at Casey Hospital have the most powerful stone laser available which significantly reduces surgery time and enables better clearance,” Mr McCahy said. Finally, the third treatment Mr McCahy uses is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, a process where a needle is passed into the kidney from outside and a special balloon stretches the tissues to allow passage of a special telescope into the kidney. “The stones can either be plucked out or broken up and removed,” Mr McCahy explained. “Casey Hospital has one of the largest experiences of these operations in the country and the leading surgeons have developed tech-

Discussion with a urologist with expertise in stone surgery is essential.” South Eastern Urology was established by Philip McCahy to provide consultant delivered local anaesthetic vasectomy service for the south-eastern suburbs. PROPERTY NEWS
INVESTOR BUYS SECURELY LET HALLAM FACTORY
HISTORIC BLOCKS SNAPPED UP THE first release of Galieo’s new Mt Pleasant residential development high above Pakenham has proved exceptionally popular with buyers, Premium lots flew out the door, selling 82 on the weekend of the launch day, Saturday 4 August. Featuring 100-acres of prime land in Melbourne’s South East, part of the site’s appeal is its rich history dating back 175 years to city’s early days. In 1843, an adventurous young Englishman named Thomas Minton was inspired by the site’s rolling hills and picturesque outlook to make it his home. Christening his holdings ‘Mt Pleasant,’ his was one of the first pioneer families in the area.
Just seven years later there were enough residents nearby to establish a hotel, which quickly became a coach staging post and then a small village named ‘Pakenham’. Minton’s acreage is now set to begin a brand-new chapter as the location for a next-generation, contemporary community in Pakenham’s heart. The site will transformed into more than 500 home lots with land sizes ranging from approximately 300 to 1500 square metres - room enough for every buyer to build the home of their dreams. “The buzz on launch day was phenomenal as future neighbours chatted over coffee and children destined to grow up together played in the petting zoo,” says Peter Nicolls, KR
Peters Director. “It was wonderful to see so many families ready to move to the area and call Mt Pleasant home,” he added. “It’s the kind of place people can imagine creating the life they’ve always wanted and building a prosperous future for their children in a thriving, like-minded community - just like Thomas Minton did 175 years ago.” Only a few lots remain available from the first release. For more information about owning a piece of Melbourne’s pioneer history, contact Mt Pleasant Estate on 1300 577 383 or email info@mpestate.com.au The sales centre is open from Saturday to Thursday 11am to 5pm. ●
A securely let factory at 15-16 Carl Court in Hallam sold for $1.4 million on Wednesday 1 August, delivering new investors an outstanding property and proving that the Hallam Industrial Precinct is the place to be. A crowd of 40 watched two bidders push the 1457 square metre property to $1.32M - at which point the hammer fell passing the property in. Ten minutes after being passed in, the price was negotiated and the property sold reflecting a 6.25 per cent yield. The elevated site includes a freestanding 895 square metre building comprising a 787 square metre concrete panel warehouse with two roller doors and 108 square metre of office space over. The 14 on-site car parks and dual driveways are a bonus for staff, suppliers and customers. “It’s no wonder businesses and investors are drawn to Hallam,” said Facey Commercial agent Adam Martin. “There’s easy access to the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland, direct access to the Ports and Tullamarine via the nearby M1 Freeway, and loads of untapped potential.” Long-standing tenants McKean’s Sheetmetal obviously agree. They signed a new five-year lease commencing on 1 July 2018, returning $87,348 per annum plus GST & O/Gs, with 2.5 per cent annual reviews and a further three-year option. Anyone interested in commercial and industrial opportunities in Hallam should contact Adam Martin on 0409 357 352. ● 12396258-CG34-18

E-Health helps patient care
Cosmetic nurse Marie Lebrasse at work on a patient.
Skin care, laser therapy Dandenong Dermatology Centre has been providing dermatology care and laser therapy to the area for many years. The centre is headed by Dr Peter Fergin, Dr Olivia Milne and Dr Stephen Gilmore. The trio were recently joined by Dr Rebecca Nguyen. Laser treatments are provided by dermatology and cosmetic nurse Marie Lebrasse. Marie has many years of expertise with laser treatments and techniques. She regularly updates her laser knowledge and skills and adheres to all new standards and regulations. Dr Fergin says that with summer over, now is the perfect time to repair the freckles or pigmentation that appear on exposed skin on the
face, chest and hands. “Photo rejuvenation is one of the newest therapies in laser, and gives great results with minimal down time. “Photo rejuvenation with radio frequency technologies applies small amounts of heat safely into the dermis leading to remodelling of collagen and elastin, which, in turn, leads to plumping of the skin. “The epidermis also tightens giving the treated skin a smoother, more youthful appearance." Dandenong Dermatology Centre is at 1/110 David Street. Call 9791 3455. The first cosmetic consultation is free.
Belgrave Hallam Road Medical Centre is EHealth compliant and able to upload information to patient 'My Health Records.' Important information such as allergies, medical conditions, medications and test results are now digitally available in one place. "Doctor's, specialists and hospitals can view your medical information online from anywhere, anytime with your consent," Belgrave Hallam Road Medical Centre Practice Manager Tracey Cooper said. "The My Health Record System will result in better, faster and more efficient care for patients and their families." Ms Cooper explained that over 3.8 million
"In the event of an emergency or if you fall unwell whilst away, your My Health Record is then accessible by medical staff to give you the best possible care as quickly as possible," she said. "Please ask our friendly staff on how to register and upload your important medical information at Belgrave Hallam Road Medical Centre." Empowering young people creatively Young people in Casey are getting a helping hand to build their confidence and explore creative careers thanks to funding from the Andrews Labor Government. Spectrum Entertainment, with the City of Casey, will soon receive a grant of $72,000 over three years to empower and support young people with youth focussed music and cultural events and the opportunity for young people to work collaboratively with other organisations, to increase connectivity and generate positive images of young people within the community. Minister for Youth Affairs Jenny Mikakos announced 77 local government and community organisations from across Victoria will receive funding as part of the $7.2 million FReeZA program, to be delivered over three years. "Congratulations to Spectrum Entertainment for its successful application to this funding round of FReeZA and I look forward to seeing the program continue from strength to strength," Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said. "Programs like FReeZA open up opportunities for young Victorians in different ways by building skills, creating jobs and supporting young musicians and artists perform in their local communities." More than 150,000 young people from across Victoria attend more than 400 FReeZA events every year. FReeZA is an innovative youth development program providing opportunities for young Victorians aged 12 to 25 to enjoy musical, cultural, recreational and artistic events that are drug, alcohol and smoke free.
To find out more about the FReeZA program, visit youthcentral.vic.gov.au/freeza. FReeZA also funds The Push which is an independent youth music and event management organisation, which helps young people organise their own live events. Young people are encouraged to participate and perform in FReeZA events, but also to get involved behind the scenes to learn skills that may lead to employment in the arts and music industry.
Successful sleepout
Organising FReeZA activities has given hundreds of young Victorians the opportunity to develop their skills development and workplace experience, so they can go on to gain further employment or education qualifications in similar fields. "FReeZA is a great way for young people to get hands on experience in setting up events whether it be live music shows, BMX expos or art and short film competitions but also to celebrate their talent," minister for youth affairs Jenny Mikakos said.
The Casey Homeless Sleepout was held on Saturday 11 August at Cranbourne Secondary College during National Homelessness Week. Despite the wild weather, over 130 participants came together to help raise awareness of homelessness in the City of Casey. The City of Casey has over 1280 people experiencing homelessness. The Walker Brothers entertained attendees and Uncle Shane Clark gave a very warm 'Welcome to Country'. Wayss general manager Doug Paroissien, Ermha CEO Karenza Louis-Smith and Cranbourne Information and Support Services executive officer Leanne Petrides each gave a snap shot of what it is like working with people experiencing homelessness. "The event had a great turnout, with rotary on hand to provide a sausage sizzle, Rapid Relief Truck provided sandwiches and water, Seikh Volunteers turned up with some tasty warm food, Cranbourne Lions Club provided a delicious warm breakfast and the Mobile Coffee Mission were there with much needed coffee and hot chocolates," councils connected communities manger Kate Sieh said. Over $2420 was raised on the night for Ermha and Wayys, in addition to donations of non-perishable food items for the local CISS and sanitary items to be donated to the Share the Dignity Campaign.

Craft and diversity Two new community art pieces will soon adorn the walls of Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House (BPNH), the result of a community arts and diversity project that has brought together a wide range of participants. BPNH manger Samar Mougharbel and local crafter Micah Caverley sought to bring together members of the diverse community and engage them through the act of making. Together they conceived a project comprising a huge woven wall hanging, and an embroidered banner. These works would represent the many colours and personalities of the individuals who would come to make the piece, a manifesta-
tion of BPNH's inclusive values. An open invitation to several free weaving workshops revealed an encouraging enthusiasm for this project by community volunteers. These workshops evolved into regular weaving working bees and satellite events, including at the Berwick Night Market. To complement this expression of the House's values, an embroidery group who regularly meet at BPNH rose to the challenge of designing and constructing a banner, contributing their deep expertise in textile design, quilting, and embroidery. Weaving volunteers are Casey residents from Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Korea, China, Japan,
Lebanon, Chile, and the United Kingdom. Their shared love of creating this piece has surpassed language barriers, and community members have found in this group a safe place to tell stories about themselves and their cultures, and friendships have blossomed. The 200 circular weavings are formed using compact discs, repurposed into weaving looms. The discs - now an abundant waste product in the age of digital streaming -were destined for landfill. The two works of art will be unveiled on Monday 27 August 2018 at 1pm, please call 0431 332 086 or email admin@bpnh.org.au if you wish to attend.

Warriors on cusp of glory By Hayley Wildes The Pakenham Warriors' Youth League 2 men and women are absolutely flying and with the men claiming their place in the Big V grand final, the women will look to join them with a win this weekend. The Youth League 2 men are riding a wave of momentum and will head into their grand final series against the Frankston Blues on an incredible 11-game winning streak after defeating the Collingwood All Stars on the road on Saturday night. Pakenham held a slender two-point lead against Collingwood at half time. The third quarter was when they made their move. Holding the All Stars scoreless in the final 5:14 of the quarter, the Warriors went on a season-defining 11-0 run to boast a nine-point lead at the final break. Collingwood refused to lie down in the final quarter, but at every challenge, Pakenham answered with clutch plays from the likes of Nathan Dodgson (16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists), Ned Weideman (15 points, 7 rebounds), Matt D'Arcy (12 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds) and Aaron Miles (14 points, 5 rebounds). The Warriors progressed through to the three-game grand final series with an 82-69 win over the All Stars. Meanwhile, the Youth League 2 women had a fight on their hands at Cardinia Life on Saturday night. Taking on the Whittlesea Pacers, Pakenham made game-winning plays when it mattered most. The Pacers came out full of energy with a very vocal Whittlesea crowd making the trip down to Pakenham. The Warriors were outplayed in the first half, but only found themselves down five points at the main break, thanks largely to the play of Ellie Coutts and Sam Neil. The third quarter was a different story as Pakenham - led by Coutts - began to work their way into the contest with defensive stops and quick transition offence. With a quarter to play, score were tied at 50-all and the crowd was absolutely buzzing. Pakenham went on a 7-0 run to begin the fourth quarter, but Whittlesea came again to level the scores, 61-61, with just 2:18 to play. Last-Tear Poa was a dominant force for the Pacers and her ability to create her own shot was proving difficult to handle for the Warriors. Down the stretch, Pakenham's execution

was nothing short of sublime - a 10-2 run to end the game saw the Warriors claim an intense 71-63 win as Whittlesea was unable to handle the pressure in the biggest moments. Pakenham's composure at the free throw line was difference as they scored their final 10 points of the game from the line.

Swans bring the changes as Wallace steps up as VP By Nick Creely A breath of fresh air is coming from Casey Fields as Casey-South Melbourne gears up for the Victorian Premier Cricket season. After a raft of changes both on and off-field, the Swans look settled, and primed to bounce back from last year's two-win season that had them narrowly avoid the wooden spoon. Current first XI batsman and 2017/18 leading run scorer Michael Wallace will step into the role of vice-president, making him the youngest ever for the club at just 27. He will join Ross Hibbins - who has been re-elected as president, while the committee will also welcome in Craig Lambden onto the general committee. It's a role Wallace is looking forward to, and wants to make an impact as his club looks to build sustainable success both on and offfield. "It wasn't necessarily something I've been aiming for, but the opportunity presented itself and I'm happy to do that work for the club," he said. "I've enjoyed the support I've got from my friends and everyone around the club, and the role really shows how much they care, so I want to give back as much as I can." Wallace will learn off Hibbins throughout the season while also juggling his playing commitments, in a relationship he believes will benefit the club. "Ross has been great to learn off, with the amount of work he puts in - for me, game day 38 STAR NEWS

Michael Wallace has stepped into the role of vice president at Casey-South Melbourne. 163770 Picture: GARY SISSONS and training I'll worry about playing, and then outside of that, I'll help as much I can," he said. "We've got a great understanding in that I'm a player, and he's been great in dealing with it all, but it's great to learn from him. Ross Moore, Laurie Stevens, those kinds of people,
have always been a great help for me too." With the Swans deep in pre-season and with less than two months away before the start of the season, Wallace said the club has focused heavily on a key area he believes will propel the players forward.
"Pre-season has been really strong so far, and we've had a heavier focus on fitness, which all the boys are enjoying, and we're being pushed probably more than we have in the past," he said. "But it's what we need - last year we could compete in games at times, but it was a mental, physical or a bit of both that let us down, so a bit more hard work will help us push over the line more in games." Driving the Swans is the disappointment of last year, but they are determined to turn things around with a different approach. "Last year was disappointing for everyone at the club," he said. "It'll turn around with hard work on the field, and hard work off the field. The challenge is there in front of us." Wallace pointed to the batting depth as a key area of improvement, with the signings of Englishman Luke Wells and also young star Ryan Quirk a big tick, while in the bowling department Josh Dowling should help off-set the big loss of Brendan Rose. "If you look back at our games last year, it was probably our batsmen that didn't quite step up and get us over the line, so it was definitely a focus (in recruiting)," he said. Brendan is (also) a big loss, and he's not an easy replacement - it's an opportunity for others to come through, but we've still got Nathan Lambden, Jackson Fry, Dylan Hadfield, so the quicks are still there, and we've got Jonah Serong as a spinner and (Lachlan) Sperling as well." pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Redbacks revelling in SFNL By Hayley Wildes It was time for a change. After not winning a game of senior football in two seasons, Hampton Park needed a fresh start and a move to the Southern Football Netball League (SFNL) offered exactly that. Having suffered through another 0-16 season in the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in 2017, the Redbacks joined SFNL Division 3 - the beginning of what has been a dramatic turnaround for the club. "We won by 10 goals against the bottom side recently and there was genuine disappointment," coach Jason Chapple said. "To not win in two years and then all of a sudden you're disappointed with a 10-goal win, it's amazing how expectations change pretty quickly, but that's all part of it and that's a good thing. "I think divisional footy is the way to go you're able to build a culture and it's pretty hard to set rules and expectations in teams when you're losing every week, because guys just walk away. "This year with the firsts and seconds winning games, it makes it easier to coach and builds a different feel, atmosphere and culture - it's much better for the footy club." Having coached the Redbacks from 200507, Chapple returned to Hampton Park for the 2018 season and has the team flying. Hampton Park is entrenched in a battle with Springvale Districts and Endeavour Hills - for a top-two finish and the crucial double chance. Chapple talked about bringing in quality players to the club and being able to compete with the best teams in the competition. "Good footballers want to play in September so when you can see that there's an opportunity to play finals, players are more likely to come over and come over early as well."
Michael Henry (middle) celebrates a goal with Daniel Boudoloh. 180269 The likes of Daniel Boudoloh, Travis Davis, Jackson Fry, Michael Henry, Shannon Henwood, Harley Primrose, Taylor Rainey and Mitch Woolgar have all played massive roles in Hampton Park's turnaround. Nathan Carver - second in the league for goals with 41 majors - has also been vital. His presence up forward demands respect and he has ran riot inside 50 all season. Chapple has instilled a team-first attitude at Hampton Park and wants his side to be the toughest to play against in the competition. "You can have a heap of tricks if you want,
but I just want to the opposition to walk away from each game knowing that they've played Hampton Park," he said. "I want to defend hard and I want to be hard to play against. You can be defensive and still be exciting, so I like moving the footy quick and making defenders nervous by forcing them to defend. "I like seeing blokes' natural talents come out - footy has got to be fun and I want it be fun to watch too." Fighting for a top-two finish is a far cry from searching for a solitary win, but Hampton Park
Picture: ROB CAREW is not satisfied. When September rolls around, they will be ready. "We are really looking forward to finals and we definitely have an opportunity come September, that's for sure," Chapple said. "The top four are all pretty good teams and it's anyone's game when it gets to the end of the year." The mood around Robert Booth Reserve is filled with positivity and a real desire for success. There is no doubt that the Redbacks are enjoying their new life in the SFNL.

Pakenham local Cameron De Bruin is fast. But up until this year, he didn't quite realise just how fast he really was. That all changed when he competed at his first Australian Junior Athletics Championships earlier this year. Competing against the best under-18 runners in the country, Cameron more than held his own and came fourth in the 200-metre final. It was an incredible achievement for a sprinter in his first national event. "It was literally the best experience of my life going up to Sydney," Cameron said. "It was my first national competition, so do to what I did; it was shocking to me because I wasn't expecting it at all." The Year 11 Beaconhills student was officially recognised for his efforts by being awarded the Pierre De Coubertin sporting award recently. The prestigious Pierre De Coubertin Award recognises secondary school students who are active sports participants and display the Olympic ideals of fair play and sportsmanship. The ceremony - held at the MCG in June celebrated the award recipients and Cameron took plenty of inspiration away from the event. "Olympic swimmer Mack Horton spoke to the group and he was actually really inspirational talking about his journey and what he's been through," he said. It wasn't just his athletic achievements that helped him earn the honour either - Cameron is also a talented footballer and helped his Beaconhills school team claim the South Eastern Independent Schools Association (SEISA) premiership this year. Whilst he still plays football - for his school and the Pakenham Lions - Cameron admitted athletics, which he has been participating in since he was five years old, is at the forefront of his mind now. "My main focus used to be football, but then I had a really good athletics season last year and it kind of turned my attention back onto athletics. Athletics is my main focus at the moment," he said. Cameron competes in both the 100-metre
Cameron De Bruin's athletics career is reaching new heights. Picture: COURTESY OF ASSOCIATION OF CO-EDUCATIONAL SCHOOLS ATHLETICS and 200-metre sprint, with the longer distance being his preferred event. His record times prove how quick he truly is; 10.88 seconds for the 100-metre and 22.15 seconds for the 200-metre event. Athletics came natural to Cameron; his older brother Matthew (a footballer for Kooweerup) is a world-class runner and competed in the 2014 World Junior Championships. "I'd have to say my brother is someone I look up to," he said. "He's a really big inspiration for my athletics with what he has been able to achieve. The more he got into athletics, the more I got into athletics." Cameron credits the healthy competition between the pair as having helped drive him to new heights. "It provides more competition and there's definitely that competitiveness against each other," he said. "Obviously we're brothers and he's always been the more developed, stronger and faster brother, but now I'm starting to get up there and we're getting closer to each other - it just makes it so much better." With incredible speed and determination, Cameron De Bruin seems destined for greatness and he has his sights set on a major meet in the coming years. "I've set a goal for the 2020 World Junior Championships and that's pretty much my next major goal after nationals." Thursday, 16 August, 2018
