Janet Riley has lost a large portion of her pay since the State Government's overhaul of school cleaning contracts on 1 July. 183650 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS don't have the finances." He said was now limited to cleaning a few private office blocks: "Companies like myself have had zero consideration - it's outrageous on all fronts," he said. A Department of Education and Training

spokesman said they had received about 100 calls from schools in the first week of the model being introduced, raising "minor concerns" that were quickly addressed. "Around 30 schools still face issues and we're working with the contractors to address these as quickly as possible," he said.

Shadow Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises, Neale Burgess said: "Labor must stop these destructive reforms and commit to honouring the existing contracts in place with local school principals and councils across the electorate," he said.

Cleaners at a Berwick school are working at "breakneck pace" in an attempt to get their work done in less hours following the State Government's revamp of school cleaning. Berwick Lodge Primary School principal Henry Grossek said the school's cleaning hours had been reduced by 10 hours a week, or 500 hours over the school year. "Some cleaners are so stressed they are putting in extra unpaid hours because they want to clean to standard," he said. As of July 1, a new model was introduced whereby eight zones were created across metropolitan Melbourne and a single cleaning contract awarded for all schools in each zone. Minister for Education James Merlino said the reform was needed to eradicate the "chronic exploitation" of low paid workers. "There is no reason why firms providing a cleaning service to schools should not be able to do the job properly," he said. "If these standards are not met, the Department has a strong contractual framework to penalise the cleaning providers." Mr Merlino added the new standards had been set by the Department in consultation with principals and are now "consistent with industry benchmarks." Meanwhile, Mr Grossek said parents and teachers were complaining about the filthy state of the school's tables, desks and carpets. Janet Riley of Cranbourne North, who has been cleaning schools for the past 47 years says the reduced hours meant she "physically can't do all the work in the time" at a school since the reforms came into place. The 64-year-old said the secondary school she works at, which she has asked not to name, has had the cleaning hours slashed by a third. "I'm here working on my own time because I'm passionate about my school and I can't bear to see the school go backwards," she said. A manager of a small school cleaning business, Michael (not his real name) says he's had his livelihood lost. "I've got a $15000 van sitting out the front that I'm not using anymore that I've got to pay for that off," he said. "Plus a $15000 business loan, plus my mortgage, plus my bills that are still coming in and everything else. "We won't ever have a chance of applying for any of those contracts because we just

Clyde rail a ‘dream’ By Brendan Rees

Volunteers of the Cranbourne Food Truck have been left reeling after callous thieves allegedly stole their new ride-on mower. Secretary Chris Marsh said thieves forced the locks on the roller door to the truck bay on Lesdon Avenue sometime between 12pm on Sunday 5 August and 4pm on Monday 6 August. "In the past we've had a couple of break-ins where they've interfered with the truck," Ms Marsh said. "This time it was an organised thing, they knew exactly what they were doing." According to Ms Marsh, she believed the

Works also included track work to improve the tangled rail junction at Dandenong - a "crucial first step" the State Government says towards the duplication of track through Lynbrook, Merinda Park and Cranbourne. culprits were likely to have brought their own truck or trailer to haul the mower out. Ms Marsh said it was a major set-back for the hardworking group who just bought the ride-on mower in May. "It just makes you cross because people donate money. It's not as if we've got a spare $6000 in the bank that we can replace these things with." The stolen mower is described as a red Husqvarna Z246 zero-turn. "Since we bought the mower we actually put a roller door in the back of it so easy to get the mower in and out," she said. "That was all padlocked, had an extra bar

Public Transport Users Association (PTUA) spokesperson Daniel Bowen said PTUA welcomed state Labor and Coalition pledges to expand Melbourne's rail network. Ms Marsh is appealing to members of the public to report any sightings of vehicles or trailers loaded with the ride-on mower, to police. "We wouldn't mind if it was a second hand but it was brand new and everyone is upset about it." An emaciated horse has been rescued from a property in Cranbourne after RSCPA received an emergency report by a member of the public. RSPCA carried out the operation on the morning of Wednesday 1 August. RSPCA Victoria Inspectorate team leader Stuart Marchesani said "Shortly after receiving the report RSPCA Victoria inspectors attended the property. Sadly, one horse could not be saved but another horse was surrendered to RSPCA Victoria and is undergoing veterinary assessment. Mr Marchesani said a legal notice was issued for the remaining horse at the property. "The legal notice provided was a notice to comply to ensure the welfare of the remaining horse is not at risk," he said. "As this is an ongoing investigation, we are unable to comment further."

A quick-thinking neighbour who heard a smoke detector going off has saved a home in Cranbourne from potentially going up in flames. Firefighters were called to the Lorna Street unit about 2.20pm after a neighbour called triple-zero. "We made forcible entry to find a pot on the stove that was still alight with no occupants home," said Cranbourne CFA Senior Station Officer Ian Glass. He said it was "extremely lucky" a neighbour had heard a smoke detector operating and called the fire brigade on Wednesday 1 August. "That just proves that smoke detectors work and lucky they had good neighbours otherwise they would have lost the house." Mr Glass said the neighbour believed the smoke detector had been operating for 20 minutes. "Probably within half-an-hour it was possible a fire could have gone up through the range hood and into the wall cavity. Mr Glass advised people to check their cooking appliances before leaving home.

Plea for bike's return A mother is pleading for the return of her young son's bike, after it was allegedly taken from Cranbourne East Secondary School on Wednesday 1August. Pip Macnamara said had picked up her son Charlie, 12, from school after he fell ill on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 August. Charlie walked to school the next day when he discovered his mountain bike missing from the school's bike shed. "They cut the bike lock off," said Ms Macnamara. "The CCTV shows it was there up until about 10pm and then the cameras have gone all cloudy from the weather." She said Charlie was devastated when there was no sign of the bike. "He's a twin so they both got one for their birthday in February." The bike is described as a bright blue Progear mountain bike worth about $350. Ms Macnamara said she was told by the school the bike shed was locked overnight. "I didn't realise until I had a proper look but there's a gap between fence and the roof of the shed," she said. Cranbourne police are investigating.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan has hit back at the State Opposition's pledge to extend the Cranbourne rail line to the fastgrowing suburb of Clyde as a "half-baked" proposal. Ms Allan visited Cranbourne Railway Station with Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards on Monday 6 August to talk about works on the Cranbourne line. Plans are underway to duplicate the track between Dandenong and Cranbourne by removing the bottleneck created by the current single track as part of a $572 million upgrade package for Melbourne's busiest corridor. "If we want to get more services into Cranbourne, and we want to see future rail extensions you've got to do the job properly and that job involves duplicating the track between Cranbourne and Dandenong," Ms Allan said. "At the moment trains run on a 20 minute frequency here, you can't improve that until you do the duplication." When asked if the State Government would match the Opposition's promise to extend the rail line to Clyde, Ms Allan said "We're not here to talk about that today. Before the railway line can be extended to Clyde you've got to do the duplication (to Dandenong)." The State Government has labelled the Opposition's promise as a "botched plan" that was underfunded and result in more congestion, delays and cancellations. "I'm concerned they're trying to con the people of Cranbourne with what is a undercooked and half-baked proposal," Ms Allan said. "What the Liberal Party has committed to is a giant hoax of the local community." Shadow Minister for Public Transport David Davis said Labor "had lost the plot" and failed to recognise the importance of the Cranbourne-Clyde rail extension. "Daniel Andrews has arrogantly taken Casey and Cardinia for granted," he said. He said the extension would have a "significant role in reducing congestion and improving access to education and indeed recreation precincts."

The Andrews Government s preferred route for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link will ensure Cranbourne and Pakenham passengers can get to the airport safer and sooner. tore up the coalition’s Sunshine Airport Rail Link from the 2014 Budget.” “Now that the Federal Government has funded a $30 million dollar study to look at all different route options, the community waits to see those options costed out carefully.” Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Daniel Mulino said: “All Victorians have waited too long for this project and I’m delighted the Andrews Labor Government has selected the best route for Cranbourne and Pakenham train passengers.” 12395842-CG33-18

Residents of the South East will be the big winners of the Andrews Government’s forthcoming Melbourne Airport Rail Link. The project has been tipped to ensure Cranbourne and Pakenham passengers can get to the airport safer and sooner. Premier Daniel Andrews announced that a re-elected Labor Government would provide up to $5 billion towards the construction of the long-awaited project, matching the commitment from the Federal Government. The Labor Government has assessed four different options and has determined that a route through Sunshine is the best option which ensures all Victorians benefit. The Sunshine option is the best option for passengers on the Cranbourne and Pakenham line as it will provide the “quickest journey with the least number of changes.” Cranbourne and Pakenham trains will travel through the Labor Government’s $11 billion Metro Tunnel which will slash travel times from the south east to the north west of the city. While the planning is not yet complete this option means that Cranbourne and Pakenham passengers may be able to travel direct to the airport or have one change at most. A re-elected Andrews Government would begin construction on the project, which will cost between $8 and $13 billion to begin in the next term of Government. Shadow Minister for Public Transport David Davis says: “It’s hypercritical of Daniel Andrews to now advocate for Sunshine when he

Free TAFE courses galore By Brendan Rees Students from the south-east are set to take advantage of key TAFE and pre-apprenticeship courses which will be made free from next year. Students completing Certificates II and III in Horticulture, Certificate III and IV in Education Support and Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping will be able to get the training and skills they need to get a job, for free. Premier Daniel Andrews toured Cranbourne Chisholm on Wednesday 1 August and met with students who are undertaking courses that will be free from term 1, 2019. "We want to give all Victorians the best chance possible to get the training they need for a good job - that's why we're providing funding to support students to see their qualification through," Mr Andrews said. The $172 million investment will allow students to study almost free 30 priority TAFE courses and pre-apprenticeship courses that lead to priority jobs. Senior Educator of Horticulture at Chisholm TAFE James Davies said third-year landscape construction apprentices were excited by the Premier's visit and "took the opportunity to educate him about their particular industry and job roles." "The horticulture courses at Chisholm form a pathway to apprentice programs and employment. We encourage members of the community to undertake one of the qualifications if they are interested in pursuing a career in this industry," he said. "The free TAFE initiative will give the Casey community the required skills and knowledge to assist then to obtain employment in industry throughout Casey and surrounding area." Shadow Minister for Training Skills and Apprenticeships Steph Ryan said Government subsidised enrolments in training have fallen by 31.7 per cent since Labour was elected.

"We strongly support a strong and stable VET system which has TAFE at its heart but genuine consultation with students, industry and training providers is required to clean up Daniel Andrews' mess," she said. Cranbourne's Chisholm Institute CEO Dr. Rick Ede said the free TAFE initiative was a great opportunity for students to engage with education and training, particularly in the south-east of Melbourne.

"I encourage members of the community to take up this opportunity to improve employment options," he said. The State Government is also putting money back into the pockets of apprentice, with an expanded half-price registration scheme underway. Apprentices at Chisholm Institute Cranbourne can register for half-price rego saving up to $408.20 per year on light vehicle registration. Tradies eligible for the discount must use their vehicle as part of their work.

Breathe Easier this Winter!!

I have lived in Cranbourne for over 50 years, since it was a little country town with dirt roads and no litter. I was honoured to be awarded an Australia Day Citizen of the year in 2004 for many years of community service, I am saddened and disgusted at the amount of litter I see every day when I walk. I pick up what I can, especially plastic bags and glass. I think we need a campaign to clean up Cranbourne and Casey, and have a few thoughts. Lobby our politicians to vote for the CDS on Wednesday. Stop charging residents exorbitant tip fees - we pay so much in rates that we should get free tip passes maybe three or times a year. Why would I pay $100 to dump my rubbish legally when I can dump it illegally for nothing? Council need to employ more bylaws officers to patrol, pick up litter and fine litterers. Shopping centres need to take responsibility for the car parks and surrounds - they make squillions and could afford to employ people to clean up. We need to turn our mentality around and dob in/confront litterers. Use SnapSendSolve to let council know of dumping, abandoned trolleys, etc. We need to ensue kids from kinder on understand what littering does to our planet. I used to be PROUD to live in Cranbourne, now I am angry and sad. Sandra Roach, Cranbourne

New opening a class act By Brendan Rees Students will have access to state-of-theart buildings at Rivercrest Christian College, thanks to funding from the Andrews Government. Eastern Victoria Region MP Daniel Mulino and Labor candidate for Bass Jordan Crugnale toured the Clyde North school's new administration and hub buildings on Friday 3 August to see firsthand the exciting $3.4 million redevelopment. To mark the occasion a ceremony was held at the school with a special song sung by the choir, speeches delivered by student leaders and an unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The project was funded by the Victorian Government ($1.7 million) and Rivercrest Christian College ($1.7 million). The Administration building features offices, a first aid room, staff room and staff collaborative working space. The Hub comprises of a Discovery Centre (library), music room, art studio, several private instrumental rooms where we teach vocal, stings, guitar and piano. Head of Rivercrest Christian College Dr Michelle Cafini said the new learning facilities ensured students had access to a great education. "There is a planned tech bar where students can work collaboratively and independently using technology to research and extend their creativity and problem solving skills," he said. However, Opposition leader Matthew Guy said an additional 70 brand new schools could have been built across the state had Mr Andrews not torn up the $1.3 billion East West Link contract.

Abandoned home set on fire By Brendan Rees An abandoned home went up in flames in Cranbourne on Wednesday 1 August. About 18 firefighters and six appliances attended the suspicious house fire on Lyall Street about 9.30am. CFA crews from Cranbourne, Hallam, Narre Warren and Frankston found the home ablaze which was brought under control about 10.40am. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and treating the fire as suspicious at this stage. Senior Station Officer Ian Glass of Cranbourne CFA said the house was well alight by the time they arrived, adding they had to access the roof internally. "The rear third of the building was involved then got up into the roof," he said. "We saved the building next door with the quick response of firefighters and protecting exposures." Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association President Arvo Talvik said the property

has been burnt out several times in recent months. "The Casey Council needs to issue a demolition order to the owners to clean the site up as the house and immediate surrounds are inhabitable," he said. "The site is an eyesore, a safety concern to the local residents, bus passengers arriving and departing Lyall Street. The Casey Council needs to take immediate action to resolve this blight in Cranbourne." Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Top of their game By Brendan Rees Having not even reached their teens, a group of sports stars from the City of Casey have achieved their dream of competing at state level basketball next month. Ryan Baker (Berwick Fields Primary School), Cedric Rault and Phoenix Windsor (both from St Catherine's Primary School Berwick) fought through a tough selection process in May to make the final team of 12 to represent Victoria in the boys' under-12 School Sport Australia Basketball Championship in Darwin. Dakota Kirikiri, 12, of Narre Warren North Primary School also made it through to the girls' under-12 Victorian basketball team and will compete in the School Sport Australia Basketball Championship in Darwin from 11-17 August. Team manager of the under-12 boys basketball team Sam Thompson said the talent this year was exceptional with 64 boy's trialling from across the state. "We are a very quick team this team this year with a lot of great outside shooters as well some fantastic athletic big guys that can create their own shots off the dribble," he said. Thompson said Ryan, 12, who plays for the Dandenong Rangers, had shown excellent ball handling skills. "He is a great rebounder and a team first player." He said Cedric, 12, who plays basketball for Casey Cavaliers, was a great point/shooting guard who was very quick. "My only advice for the other states would be not to leave him open at the three point line." Thompson said Phoenix, 12, who plays for the Dandenong Rangers, was versatile shooting forward. "He has fantastic court vision and is able to dish and drive using his fantastic ball handling skills to either set up his team mates or create a shot for himself." Team manager of the under-12 girls basketball team Sam Amos said Dakota, who plays for the Dandenong Rangers, was a "real competitor." "She impressed selectors during trials with her defence, great ball handling, scoring abili-

"We have selected a very athletic and skilled group of girls. "It's a fantastic opportunity for the girls to develop as both individuals and basketballers, whilst competing at the top level," Amos said.

He added his team plans to play a "very aggressive brand of basketball" that will hopefully result in bringing home a gold medal. Past School Sport Victoria members have gone onto to compete at national and international competitions including the Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games.

CWA’s milestone birthday bash By Brendan Rees Nine decades of work and friendship was celebrated among members of the Country Women's Association (CWA) Cranbourne subbranch on Monday 6 August. The milestone event, held at St John's Community Hall in Cranbourne attracted more than 100 guests including CWA members from West Gippsland. Attendees shared stories over a celebratory lunch and viewed a display of the branch's history since the group formed in 1928. Group president Carmel Ryan presented Joyce Broad and Eileen Denereaz with 50 years membership certificates. Casey Council Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the 90th birthday was a perfect way of celebrating the branch's impressive

record of achievements and fundraising over the years. "It is a remarkable achievement for any organisation to sustain itself for 90 years," she said. "Today is a wonderful celebration of your endurance and the ongoing needs for our community to support others. The pride you all take in your work here speaks volumes for your commitment to the future of the CWA and the important work underway." Cr Stapledon added the City of Casey recognised the important role CWA members played in providing funds to people in need. "The strong volunteer ethic and resilience you exhibit in your work sets a wonderful example for our rapidly developing municipality," she told CWA members at the event.

Club secretary Alice Needs said it was a wonderful day to celebrate 90 years of strong and capable female leadership, providing friendship and helping those in need.

Ken Blencowe has spent the majority of his life serving his community, as a member of the Clyde fire brigade. He has been a volunteer with CFA for 48 years but just a few weeks ago the 63-year-old decided to hang up his boots as captain of the brigade. “I’ve been in charge of the brigade for a long time,” he said. “I had a couple of issues lately and I decided enough is enough. I wasn’t going to try and do 20 years.” Ken joined the Clyde brigade at the age of 16 years old and worked his way up the ranks. But he has no plans on slowing down though and will continue to be an active member with the Clyde brigade. As captain, Ken says he made a lot of sacrifices: “I was there every Sunday morning, I was there every Monday night, and I would go around to different meetings and then also turnouts.” “In the last month since I’ve stepped down I’ve probably seen my kids more than I have in the past,” Ken says. When asked what he loves most about being a member of CFA, Ken says “helping people.” “You get to meet a lot of different firefighters from all walks of life and all over the state,” he added. With nearly 50 years of experiences under his belt Ken said he has had too many great CFA memories to pick just one. “There are plenty of incidents that happen that you never forgot,” he said. “It’s a big commitment trying to organise crews and relieve crews. As a captain I didn’t really go away as much as I used to,” he said. Firefighting is also family affair for Ken with two of his three children currently serving with the brigade. “My dad was in the brigade and my granddaughter is also in the brigade.“ “I’m just a happy bloke that enjoys what I do,“ he says. Clyde CFA member Andrew Milligan took over the role as captain of the brigade on 1 July.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Family’s plea for alert dog By Brendan Rees A Junction Village couple are hoping the community can help their young son battling a rare condition. Cody, 12, was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour and hydrocephalus which consists of excess fluid on the brain just before he was 2 years old. Since then, Cody has undergone nine brain surgeries and been diagnosed with epilepsy, Hypothalamus Dysfunction, acquired brain injury and intellectual disability. "With all of this Cody's physical ability, memory, cognition and ability to learn is severely impacted," explained his parents, Scott and Tracy Wallace on their GoFundMe page. "All medications have been tried; tested and failed ... Cody even contracted meningitis from one of his epilepsy treatments." "Cody's seizures do not stop without medical intervention and even with emergency medication there is no guarantee that it will stop," his parents say. Today, they are desperate to raise enough money to buy a seizure alert dog. A canine companion, they say, will be able to provide the 24-hour surveillance he needs to ensure his safety. "We have cameras, audio monitors and a seizure mat on his bed, these of course are not fail safe," Scott and Tracy said. "We feel that an alert dog would not only give Cody comfort and companionship but also watch over him always, especially when he is asleep."

Twelve year-old Cody hopes to have a seizure alert dog to ensure his safety. Picture: CONTRIBUTED The cost of the seizure alert dog to buy, raise and train is $30000. "It is up to us to raise $20000," Cody's parents say, with the final $10000 being provided by the organisation training the dog. "Every little bit helps, please spread the word far and wide to help our son find a dog that could potentially save his life." Casey Medical Centre has recently opened the doors to its second site situated at 1s Morison Road in Clyde. The centre commenced in 1978 as a solo practice and has been providing care to the community for almost 40 years. Founder Dr Sam Auteri initially worked from his converted garage before expanding the centre to its current two practices. Casey Medical Centre has 19 general practitioners who work between the two practices. The team of GPs have diverse interests in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, sports medicine, occupational health, emergency medicine, minor surgery, women’s health, men’s health, mental health, counselling, nutritional health, adolescent health, preventative medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, antenatal care, acupuncture, laser, immunizations, travel medicine, diabetes education, general family medicine. The Clyde practice has seven consulting rooms, a four-bed emergency/treatment room and Diagnostic Imaging (MIA Radiology), Melbourne Pathology, Physio on Clyde and Beauty and Skin on Clyde will all be located in the same

building and will open for business in the coming months. A pharmacy is located within the Shopping on Clyde shopping centre. Situated in the main street of Cranbourne, the Cranbourne practice has 15 consulting rooms, an eight-bed emergency/treatment room and a pharmacy attached to the practice. Pathology, Radiology and a Specialist and Allied Health Centre are located in close proximity. “Casey Medical Centre is committed to providing comprehensive general practice care to all individuals and families in the community using the most up-to-date and proven methods, materials and equipment,” Dr Auteri said. “This philosophy will best be achieved in a working environment where we recognize the patient as being the most important person in the practice and where we work in an ethical and responsible manner, in an environment of teamwork, with mutual respect for each other’s abilities and function.” To find out more about Casey Medical Centre, phone 5991 1222 or visit www.caseymedical. com.au.

Their new best friends Twenty-four greyhounds found their ‘furever’ homes at the first adoption day at the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club on Sunday 5 August. Over 200 people attended the adoption day looking to find a new family member or more information on the Greyhound Adoption Program. Rob and Laura from Cranbourne North had been waiting since 5am to adopt Graham. The couple travelled to Seymour the previous Tuesday and instantly fell in love with the brindle boy. “It was his beautiful gentle and kind nature. He is so placid but still has playful puppy nature about him,” Laura said. Bonded pair Mickey and Peka found a new home with Melissa and Andy and their son Elijah. The family attended the event to find out more information about the program but they couldn’t deny the connection they had with the pair. “We had always wanted to have two dogs and our friend who has a couple of GAP dogs couldn’t speak highly enough of the breed.” Warragul locals Penny Ballantyne and David Miller adopted Mira. David who works with greyhounds on a regular basis as a vet nurse had heard about GAP and wanted to adopt a greyhound. The Carmody family also from Warragul has been waiting for the past 16 years for the right time to adopt a greyhound. The whole family attended the adoption day to find the beautiful Fiona. After 26 years, the Friends of Cranbourne Libraries will hold its final book sale. With ageing members, difficulty in attracting younger people and change of policy with Casey Cardinia Library Corporation in no longer needing the group to raise money through book sales, members have decided to call it a day. The group's secretary Helen Crago said members were disappointed with being left with no choice but to fold. "Our members opinion was that without the book sales, which have been very successful over the years and raised funds to then be donated to the library to sponsor programs, author talks etc. that our role would largely be redundant," she said. At special meeting on Tuesday 31 July,

members voted to cease operations from 31 August. Book lovers will have a chance to snap up a bargain at the final book sale which will be held at Cranbourne Library on Saturday 11 August from 8.30am to 2pm. Ms Crago said the group has been a wonderful way for members to become involved with the public, particularly through the book sales. "The increasing diversity of this area's population has made these sales particularly popular among migrant groups and children especially," she said. "The patrons attending our sales have been appreciative of the opportunity buy books, many in 'as new' condition, at such bargain prices." Books will range from 50 cents to $5 each.

PROPERTY NEWS

UPGRADERS MAKE THE MOVE By Narelle Coulter UPGRADERS are cashing in on capital gains made from homes in the growth corridor and moving to acerage in Gippsland or closer to the city. Century 21 South Eastern CEO Craig Seymour said only five per cent of people who sell in Pakenham buy a subsequent property within the township. “Ninety per sent of sellers either move closer to the city from whence they originated, or go to acreage near Drouin and Warragul,“ Mr Seymour said. “Pakenham is not a suburb where people sell a smaller home and buy a bigger one.“ He said the story was similar for the owners of units. They too tend to sell and buy closer to the city or move to a more rural location. According to RiskWise Property Research CEO Doron Peleg the cooling housing market has placed upgraders in a good position. He said upgraders “can achieve bigger properties in better locations for a relatively reasonable price, and more importantly, they need a lower amount in order to upgrade, knowing they will enjoy long-term capital growth“. However, to minimise the risk he warned they need to “sell before they buy to ensure they get the right price particularly if they only own a unit“. Mr Seymour said the tightening of lending to both investors and owner occupiers and new deposit regulations for investors had produced a “tough“ market. He said buyer activity in both Pakenham and Officer had slowed from a peak in January and February. “It’s tougher for investors because they now need a minimum 20 per cent deposit. In the early 2000s you could borrow 110 per cent.“ Mr Seymour said only 15 per cent of

Upgraders are looking to invest in lifestyle properties like 33 Waratah Drive, Warragul, now being sold by Harcourts Warragul. buyers in the Pakenham market were investors. Overwhelmingly buyers were looking for owner occupied properties. However, he said buyers still viewed Pakenham and Officer as good value. “To get into the market families are coming here from closer to the city. They want a particular style and type of house that if they were to buy in Ringwood, Bentleigh or Keysborough would start with a

one or a two.“ Mr Peleg said population growth would ensure Melbourne real estate would continue to yield healthy long term capital gains. “As demographer Bernard Salt has predicted the population of Melbourne will pass five million by 2021 and eight million by 2050, and there is an obvious undersupply of properties suitable for

families. It’s clear properties prices will remain steady and offer good long-term capital gains if upgraders act now,” he said. “In addition, the employment market remains steady and this will trigger stronger migration, higher wage growth and stronger demand for housing. PROPERTY NEWS

LEARN TRICKS OF THE BUILDING TRADE THE City of Casey has launched a new online tool designed to support Casey residents during the process of building a new home. In an Australian Council first, Casey’s new ‘Build a House’ platform is equipped with all the tricks of the trade and information about the many steps involved in building a new house. Both new and experienced home builders are encouraged to check out the website, which details the stages of building a home; including understanding your finances, locating land, locking in a builder and getting construction started. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said that with so many new residents coming to Casey

every year, it was important to have tools such as these to ensure residents have everything they need right at their doorstep. “Not only can the build and design of a new home be daunting, but sometimes it’s just as hard to decide where to live depending what your lifestyle requires,” he said. “This Casey first initiative provides information that will allow home builders to make a well-informed choice when

determining where in Casey they will choose to live, while also providing useful advice on key stages involved in building a home.” The website lists eight key milestones, including: · Understanding your finances · Your location and lifestyle · Finding your land · Choosing a house · Locking in a builder · Signing the contract · Under construction · Moving in There are also various checklists that residents can use to ensure they’re on the right track. Cr Ablett said there wasn’t any other tool

available to Casey residents that combines the information in the same way as this website. “Council has pooled information from the Government, the building industry and community services to guide a new homebuilder throughout their experience, while also providing relevant information relating to Casey. “You’re not just building a house, you’re building a home. We encourage potential residents to use this new platform to get to know what your local community has to offer and what you can look forward to as a Casey resident.” The Build a House platform can be found at buildahouse.casey.vic.gov.au. ●

Kicking goals for diversity By Brendan Rees Sunny weather, free activities and footy featured at the Casey Demons Football Club inaugural community celebration day of the South Asian community. Families converged on the grounds of Casey Fields on Saturday 4 August for the funfilled day. Casey Demons general manager Peter Maynard said it was a great opportunity to connect communities to AFL footy. "One of the outcomes was trying to promote healthy and active lifestyles in Casey," he said. "We want to engage and integrate as many communities as possible." More than 50 kids of Indian, Sri Lankan,

and Pakistani backgrounds attended the free day."We've had a 30 year partnership with the City Casey and we do a lot of community activities," Mr Maynard said. The day included a free bbq, giveaways including t-shirts, footballs and stickers and a chance for youngsters to meet Casey Demons players. "We also have a multicultural day on the 19 August at Casey fields," Mr Maynard said. "We've also got a South Easy Juniors (SEJ) day along with the Pink Ribbon Day this Saturday (11 August) promoting out partnership with SEJ and also raising funds for the BCNA." Mr Maynard said the community events "really stems from the major partnership between Melbourne Footy Club and City of Casey to promote that healthy active lifestyle."

models are especially useful in identifying people claiming things like home to work travel or trips not required as part of your job.” “Unless you have a work-related need to travel while performing your job, you won’t be able to claim a deduction. For example, travelling from home to work is not deductible for most people. There are a few exceptions like if people travel from site to site or are required to transport bulky tools or equipment and their employer does not provide them with secure storage at work. However, simply travelling from home to work is not enough to qualify, no matter how far you live from your workplace.” The ATO is advising taxpayers that they may request proof that you were required to undertake the travel for work. “A good way to check that your travel claim relates to your work is to ask yourself - did your employer require you to do that travel as part of your duties, or did your employer require you to transport bulky tools or equipment to and from work?”

if you did actually do them as part of earning your income. “However, we are concerned that some taxpayers mistakenly believe that this is a “standard” deduction they are entitled to, without needing to provide any evidence of having travelled that distance, or even having undertaken any travel at all,” Ms Anderson said. “It’s true that claims of up to 5,000 kilometres using the cents per km method don’t require a log book. “However, you still need to have done the kilometres as part of your job and be able to show how you calculated your claim, for example by keeping a diary of places you have had to drive to for work, and how often. The cents per kilometre method is there to simplify record-keeping, not to provide a free ride.” Ms Anderson said that the ATO’s ability to identify claims that are unusual has improved due to enhancements in technology and data analytics. “We compare taxpayers to others in similar occupations earning similar incomes. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced that it will be closely examining claims for work-related car expenses this tax time as part of a broader focus on work related expenses. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said over 3.75 million people made a workrelated car expense claim in 2016-17, totalling around $8.8 billion. “That’s a lot of money and Australians expect us to ensure people are not over-claiming,” she said. “We are particularly concerned about taxpayers claiming for things they are not entitled to, like private trips, trips they didn’t make and car expenses that their employer paid for or reimbursed.” There are two ways to calculate a deduction for car expenses - the cents per km method which is limited to claims for work-related travel up to 5,000 kms and using a log book to determine the work-related percentage of actual expenses incurred. Each year around 870,000 people claimed the maximum amount under the cents-per-kilometre. “It’s legitimate to claim for 5,000 kilometres

SPORT

A new chapter is opening By Nick Creely AFL Yarra Ranges formally granted the applications for six South East Football Netball League clubs to join the commission for 2019 during a presentation at the Upwey Tecoma Football Club last Thursday night. Beaconsfield, Berwick, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham had their applications ratified under AFL Victoria By-law 3.8 (ii) to transfer into another regional commission, paving the way for the new divisional structure in 2019. Berwick Springs have also joined the commission as a new club in 2019, and will commence with an Under 19s and netball team next year with the view to later becoming a senior club. After much deliberation over the name over the competition, the AFL Yarra Ranges commission also confirmed it will be known as ‘AFL Outer East’, reflecting the broader area it now represents. The competition will then be known as ‘Outer East Football Netball League’. AFL Yarra Ranges region general manager Aaron Bailey explained the thinking behind the name on the night, and said it was an important decision in setting up the future. “We want to encompass what we are, and what we have been and what we’ll become - the Yarra Ranges is a key part of who we are, and we want to certainly keep making sure our region is acknowledged along the way,” he said. “But, we do now cover the south-east of Melbourne - particularly the councils of Casey and Cardinia, so we believe we need to have a name that reflects our competition.” The commission will be offering both Under 18 and Under 19 football in 2019, and clubs can nominate a team in either age group. As previously stated by the Star News, there will be three divisions making up the Outer East Football Netball League, with Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 grades. Premier has been confirmed as an eightteam competition, which will feature the top five AFL Yarra Ranges Division 1 sides, and the top three SEFNL sides. Division 1 will be a nine-team competition with the bottom five AFL Yarra Ranges Division 1 sides, and also featuring the bottom three SEFNL clubs, and one team from Division 2 of the Yarra Ranges (by application). Division 2 will also be an eight-team competition, made up of current AFL Yarra Ranges Division 2 clubs. The Yarra Ranges commission has made the decision on where each team sits in the divisional structure by looking at factors such as on-field club performance from the past five years, financial sustainability, ability for the club to compete, quality of boys’ and girls’ juniors and junior pathway, and the facilities - including the capacity for crowds, netball, all-ability access and females (including future development plans).

Aaron Bailey outlined the key details behind the new football and netball competition for 2019. 182900 The preferred promotion and relegation system will be one up, one down, and in 2019, promotion from Division 2 will be application or invitation only. By 2021, the aim is to have promotion and relegation across all divisions. The commission has also recommended an increase in player point levels to match neighbouring competitions, and a set salary cap that can be sustainable for the future of all clubs. Points will be increased to 44 for Premier, 44 for Division 1 and 47 for Division 2, while the salary cap limits for 2019 will be $125,000 for Premier, $110,000 for Division 1 and $80,000 for Division 2. However, tiered points will be applied to clubs in any division in order to achieve competition balance, with the SEFNL clubs likely

to be given 39 points in Premier and 41 points in Division 1. The salary cap amounts will be reviewed on an annual basis, and the Premier cap should closely align to the MPNFL and EFL Division 1 competitions. Women’s football is also high on the agenda, with Bailey confirming they are making inroads on how to grow the game. “We can confirm that we are working with the EFL (Eastern Football League) to go to an Eastern Region Women’s competition,” he said. “Hopefully with a structured divisional setup with Premier and working down, our aim is to grow to the point that our strong women’s teams can compete with the EFL and we will have a standalone Yarra Ranges development competi-

tion, so there’s work happening in terms of that.” In terms of the netball structure in 2019, the commission will introduce Under 13, 15 and 17 age groups, and provide divisional netball in junior ranks for clubs with strong numbers. Moving forward, AFL Yarra Ranges has announced Matt Fotia as the media manager starting in September, while it will also look to appoint a head of umpiring and netball development manager in the coming months. Totally Workwear Berwick and Knoxfield has also been locked in as the major sponsor of the Premier competition. The full draft of the findings of the AFL Yarra Ranges Review will be released on 17 August, with clubs having 28 days to respond to the reviews and make any further recommendations.

The Cavs’ Championship dream is dashed By Hayley Wildes After a regular season that built nicely towards the business end, the Casey Cavaliers State Championship men unfortunately weren't able to carry on that momentum in the first round of the Big V finals. Facing the Hawthorn Magic at Boorondara Sports Complex on Saturday night, the Cavs played a great 37 minutes of basketball, but their season came to a close due to a grim final three minutes of play. The Cavs came out firing and established a 17-9 lead after five minutes of play as Ben Louis pushed the pace and attacked the rim. After a timeout, the Magic found their groove and fought their way back into the contest, owning a one-point lead at the first break, 21-20. In almost a carbon copy of the first quarter, Casey again jumped out to a 32-24 lead early in the second term as Louis, Raheem Lemons and Brent Hobba drained big buckets. In what was quickly turning into a game runs, it was Hawthorn's turn to turn up the cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

heat on offence and by half time, the Cavs lead was just two points, 39-37. It was a high-octane third quarter as both teams fought tooth and nail. Casey held an eight-point advantage with just over three minutes to play in the quarter, but Hawthorn - led by sharp-shooter Jack Barry - reduced the Cavs' lead to just one-point with a quarter to play. The crowd hung on every possession and it looked like it was going down to the wire with scores tied at 67-all with 3:20 left on the clock. When buckets were needed down the stretch, Casey went cold and was unable to stop Hawthorn from pulling away. The Cavs scored just one bucket - a Brandon Polk jump shot - in the final 3:20 of the game and the Hawks were simply sublime finishing the game on a 13-2 run with Jack Barry and Nelson Kirksey hitting clutch triples. Hawthorn claimed an 80-69 win and ended Casey's season in frustrating fashion. Matt Donlan (16 points, 3 rebounds) top-scored for Casey, while Raheem Lemons (13 points, 10 re-

bounds, 3 steals) finished his dominant season with yet another double-double. Ben Louis' (12 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) efforts typified his season - involved in everything and always fighting for an extra possession. Despite a bitterly disappointing final three minutes of the season, Casey produced some great basketball throughout the season and there is definitely a lot to build on going forward. Casey fans still have a lot to look forward to in the remainder of 2018 Big V finals, with the Division 1 and Youth League 2 women tipping off their respective finals campaigns this weekend. The Division 1 women travel to Geelong to face the Supercats on Saturday night in the first game of a best-of-three series for a place in the grand final. Meanwhile, the Youth League 1 women host the Frankston Blues at Casey Stadium from 8pm on Saturday night. They can punch their ticket to the grand final with a win.

Comets are in fine form By Nick Creely FOOTBALL FEDERATION VICTORIA SOCCER WRAP - ROUND 18 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets continued on with the impressive run of State League 1 South East form with a 2-0 win over South Springvale at Comets Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The home side took a handy 1-0 lead into half time, and put the game to bed early in the second half with a strike from Dejan Radojicic, who scored a brace. It continues on a confidence boosting last month after what has been a tough season for the Comets, who now sit with a 5-10 record with only a handful of matches left to play. In other games, Richmond SC defeated Warragul United 4-0 at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST In State League 2 South East action over the weekend, Berwick City knocked off Frankston Pines 1-0 at Jack Thomas Reserve. City took the lead in the 25th minute with Jarod Blackbourn hitting the back of the net, and from there, the home side held firm to take the win. The visitors certainly had their moments in the second half, but a stingy City defence which has leaked just 20 goals in 18 games this season - were too strong in the end. Doveton SC also kept up their winning ways, with the top of the table Doves winning 2-0 against Mazenod Victory at Waratah Reserve. The Doves keep knocking away every challenger in its way, and now sit top of the ladder by a whopping six points. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Casey Panthers defeated Bunyip 3-2 in a highly entertaining affair between the two rivals at Bunyip Recreation Reserve. Both sides came into the round in similar

spots on the table, and played a game befitting of their evenness. The Strikers did well to keep pace with the Panthers, but the attacking weapons of Roberto Amorim, skipper Martin Byrnes and Jamie Faithfull - who each scored proved too much to handle. Pakenham lost 3-1 to Rowville Eagles at IYU

sit with him.

With three games remaining in the home and away season, Casey is undoubtedly the form team of the VFL. Currently riding an incredible 11-game winning streak - their latest scalp a 91-point thrashing of the Northern Blues at Casey Fields on Saturday - the Demons (13-2) sit second on the ladder, just percentage behind Richmond in top spot with a game in hand. Due to injury, captain Jack Hutchins was sidelined until Round 10, but he could tell something special was brewing at Casey Fields. “There were a couple of games early on where we lost to Richmond and Geelong when we were still trying to find our feet and when we did get challenged, we weren’t able to move on from it, deal with it and process it accordingly,” he said. “After those two losses, I think we found our feet and I noticed it sitting on the sidelines; how the group had come together and what they were able to achieve. “Then it was great to be able to jump back into the side and be a part of it.” Being a part of it is an understatement. Hutchins, since joining to the club in 2016, has given his all and is the type of player anyone would want on their side; a team-first player who competes all day and is rarely beaten in a contest. The contest, and being a monster defensive team, is what Casey is all about and with a skipper that lives and breathes that mantra it’s a match made in heaven. Hutchins spoke about the driving factors of Casey’s dominant season thus far. “The whole defensive side of our game has been key,” he said. “We want to be known for our contest and being able to outnumber at the contest, while playing for each other and with a real spirit. “The last couple of weeks we’ve been challenged and we haven’t lost our cool - we’ve been able to acknowledge it and work through the process to get the job done.” Hutchins also points to coach Jade Rawlings - in his first season with Casey - as having a huge impact on the playing group. “He’s been fantastic,” he said. “The beauty of him is that he’s honest and upfront with you and you always know where you

“He drives really high standards and he’s been able to rally the group together.” In a season full of highlights, perhaps the greatest of them all was the stunning comefrom-behind win on the road against Geelong in Round 16. “It was unbelievable and they’re the sort of games you want to be a part of,” Hutchins said of the thrilling three-point win. “In the time I’ve been at Casey that was probably one of the best wins I’ve been a part of. “When you get challenged and find a way to win, those are the wins you can look back on when you get in a similar situation and have the confidence that you can play through it and you’re never out of it.” With three games remaining before finals, Hutchins’ mind is set firmly on the task at hand, but he can’t wait for September football. “It’s a wonderful time of year and anything can happen in finals,” he said. “You just want to be thereabouts to give yourself the best chance and I think we have done that. “We’re in a good position to be able to give it a really good crack at the end of the year.” Although Hutchins is under no illusions about the challenges that lie ahead, the thought of captaining Casey to the ultimate prize in Victorian football is a tantalising one - adding: “To be able to captain a side and be part of a premiership, that’s the dream isn’t it? “We missed out in the grand final two years ago. To make it and come so close, that still sits in the back of the gut and I’d love the opportunity to have another go at it.” The Demons will be looking to make it a dozen wins on the trot when they face Sandringham at Casey Fields on Saturday from 2pm. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Little moments that count By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 14 Saturday was a glimpse. A glimpse into Narre Warren's ability to weather the storm and play a brand of football that holds up in the heat of battle. It was also a glimpse into what will one of the most fascinating finals series in recent memory. The Magpies are now all but sealed as the minor premiers, and the pressure will certainly come in the coming month as they look to turn the tables on last year's grand final loss, but it's a challenge they seem primed for. The anticipated clash between the Magpies and the in-form Cranbourne at Kalora Park was finals like, and in this case, Matt Shinners' side - as they have all year - stood up in the critical moments to find an extra gear when challenged, 12.11 (83) to 7.5 (47). It wasn't a moment that yielded a goal, but young star Ryan Quirk set the tone after his side got off to a slow start after Eagles sharpshooter Marc Holt snared the opening goal of the match. Holt looked dangerous early, and loomed as the match winner, something Shinners had to address. The Eagles were getting their hands on the footy, with Shaun Marusic, Luke Bee-Hugo and Anthony Vella getting plenty of run going, when Quirk bravely went back with the flight of the ball to take a telling mark as the visitors surged forward. It was one of those little moments that seemed to shift the momentum, one of many in a four quarter effort. All of a sudden, the Magpies found a spark, and despite missing some gettable set-shots, eventually broke free to set up a 17-point quarter time lead, looking ominous in attack with their daring ball movement. As has been the case all season, the Magpies didn't waste time; they quickly played on after cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

taking a mark and flicked the ball around with an energy so telling. It was much of the same over the rest of the game, with leaders in Dylan Quirk and Michael Collins beginning to assert themselves, with Quirk in particular producing a brilliant moment by hand in the slippery conditions that resulted in a Nick Scanlon goal in the second term. Despite the best efforts of the likes of Glenn Osborne, Dillan Bass and Brandon Osborne to cope with the amount of ball spilling into their defensive arc, the Eagles were under the pump and couldn't penetrate off half back with Jesse Davies, Zietsman, Ryan Quirk and Col McNamara intercepting everything in their path and bringing the ball back with searing run. The Magpies took a 35-point lead into half time, and booted another three third term goals to snuff out any chance of a comeback, before taking the foot off the pedal slightly but controlling the final term. Running out 36-point winners, Magpies coach Matt Shinners pointed to the learnings taken after losing to the Eagles back in Round 9 at home, in a game he described at the time as one of the best local matches he's seen. "When we lost to them last time at home, the conditions were a little different weather wise," he said. "We had enough of the ball that day to suggest we could have come away and won, so we discussed where we went wrong, and we made sure we didn't get caught in the same trap. "They've got some good outside runners, so we had to look at things differently compared to last time, and it came off which was great." Despite a slow start to the game, Shinners was impressed with his side's ability to control the match against a side that is well and truly in the premiership frame. "We didn't start as good as I wanted, but it's one of those things where the opposition is ready - we tinkered with a couple of things, and it paid dividends for us," he said.

"We managed to control the majority of the game a lot more than I would have thought, to be honest - Cranbourne are a quality side, so I thought we played quite well." Officer, meanwhile, seems finals bound for the first time since 2004. In a virtual elimination final between the Lions and Kangaroos, the pressure was certainly on to see who could grasp the fifth spot on the ladder with both hands, with the visitors running out 11.8 (74) to 7.14 (56). The Kangaroos' recent form has pointed to a side that has clearly earnt a chance at an elimination final come late August, with coach Doug Koop only recently describing the Kangaroos as "the best of the rest". The swirling wind down at Toomuc Reserve made life difficult for both sides, who were struggling to adjust to the conditions. Ultimately, the Kangaroos had enough class on the outside to boot away, kicking five goals to one in the final term to draw clear of Tooradin and Pakenham with two rounds left to play. With two games between the Seagulls in sixth spot, the Kangaroos can now prepare for their first finals series in 14 years, where they will almost certainly meet Leigh McQuillen's Beaconsfield in an elimination final on 26 August. Beaconsfield meanwhile, dominated Doveton from start to finish and enjoying 39 scoring shots to seven to set up a 137-point win, 22.17 (149) to 1.6 (12). With spearhead Nathan Langley back in to the side and arguably the best player in the competition, Scott Meyer expected to be back before finals, the Eagles started to find some run, and more importantly, put it on the scoreboard - something that has been an issue for parts throughout the season. Despite the usual fight by the likes of Doves trio Mitch Cotter, Matt Stapleton and Matthew Boyd, the class and speed of Riley Verbi, Bailey Morrish and the laser like kicking of Jake Bowd was giving coach Daniel Charles serious headaches.

Officer forward Matthew Clarke in action. 183667

The Eagles build their lead to 75 at half time, and eventually 99 at the final change, with the home side queuing up to get their chance to hit the scoreboard. Unwilling to let his side simply take the foot off the pedal, momentum coming into next week became key, with the Eagles slamming on a further six unanswered goals in the final term to stretch the margin into triple figures. And Berwick knocked off Tooradin-Dalmore 9.15 (69) to 7.6 (48) at Tooradin Recreation Reserve, in horrible conditions by the Westernport. The Wickers struggled to shake the brave Seagulls, who ultimately didn't have enough class to overcome a side eyeing off back to back premierships. Thursday, 9 August, 2018

Lions repel the Lightning By Hayley Wildes & Nick Creely MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 17 A scintillating final quarter burst was enough for Pearcedale to knock off Rye at Tractor Park on Saturday, 10.15 (75) to 6.12 (48). The Panthers and Demons were neck and neck for the majority of the contest, but the home side managed to slam on five goals to one in the final term to run away comfortable winners. Luke Daniel and Luke Dalmau were once again prominent for the Panthers, while Laughlin Cowell snared three majors. A highly inaccurate Devon Meadows, meanwhile, lost to the lowly Tyabb by eightpoints at Glover Reserve, 10.8 (68) to 7.18 (60). The Panthers led at the final change by just three points, but disappointingly kicked 1.8 to 3.3 in the final term to fall short in what was a tough day for the club. Despite the result, Michael Theodoridis booted another four majors, while Mat Fletcher was almost a lone hand for his side with another brilliant display. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 The Doveton Eagles bounced back from last week's defeat with a hard-fought win over Murrumbeena at home, 12.11 (83) to 8.7 (55). Cameron Carmody was best for the Eagles,

Blue Darcy Vescio and Demon Casey Sheriff keep an eye on the ball. while Russell Robertson booted four goals. Keysborough was challenged at times by Caulfield, but its class shone through as the side claimed a 14.8 (92) to 9.7 (61) win at home. Chris Bryan (five goals) was electric up forward and James Anwyl played a pivotal role. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 15 In Division 3, Hampton Park was a class above

Hallam, claiming a cruisy 14.7 (91) to 5.4 (34) win. Reece Smart and Justin Hill (six goals) dominated for the Redbacks, while Jonathan Daly and Rory McIvor battled hard all day for the Hawks. Endeavour Hills powered away in the final term against Heatherton to record a 13.13 (91) to 7.6 (48) win at home. Nick Gay and Daniel Morrison were sublime for the Falcons, while Reagan Maddaford was best for Heatherton. Springvale Districts claimed a 114-point win over South Yarra on the road. The Dees held the Lions goalless after half-time to run out 19.22 (136) to 3.4 (22) winners. Peter Heng was best in a team effort for the Dees. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 16 It was a top of the table battle at Marriott Waters Reserve and Carrum Patterson Lakes defeated Lyndhurst. Carrum Patterson Lakes held Lyndhurst to just one behind in the first half and went onto claim a 10.9 (69) to 6.5 (41) win. The class of Matthew Ryan and Liam Hickman shone through as Carrum Patterson Lakes moved a win clear on top. Despite the loss, Jason Twite and Charlie Gardiner impressed for the Lightning. Lyndale flexed its muscle against Sandown, recording a 12.2 (74) to 2.3 (15) win. Moses Faaola dominated for the Pumas, while Trevor Kumetaitis slotted four majors. Dandenong claimed its third win of the sea-

son in a thriller against Moorabbin. With both teams trading punches all day, the Redlegs were in front when it mattered most to claim a 16.5 (101) to 13.15 (93) win. Jayke Hopkins (four goals) was brilliant and David Barrie's four goals were also vital. VAFA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 St Johns was no match for Yarra Old Grammarians at Doncaster Reserve. After being held goalless in the first half, St Johns improved in the second half, but the game was already well out of reach. Anthony Brannan and Rohan Scott battled valiantly for St Johns in the 17.14 (116) to 7.6 (48) loss. VFLW ROUND 13 In typically windy conditions at Casey Fields on Saturday morning, the Casey Demons held strong for a hard-fought win over Carlton, 5.7 (37) to 3.9 (27). Kicking with the wind in the opening term, Casey jumped out to a 22-point lead at the first break, but Carlton returned the favour with three goals to zero in the second term. In a frantic final quarter, the Demons - despite being held scoreless - held Carlton goalless and recorded a 10-point win as Kate Hore and Bianca Jakobsson starred.

The Stingrays and Power continue on their winning ways By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays were tested by the Northern Knights on the weekend, but as they have done all season long, found a way to get the win and extend their winning streak to nine games. The Rays were wasteful in front of goal and it cost them dearly as they struggled their way to 2.11 (23) at the main break. Kicking with the wind in the first term, Dandenong peppered the goals and had almost triple the amount of inside 50s but was unable to convert. Despite their dominance, the Stingrays trailed 3.0 (18) to 1.5 (11) at quarter-time. Dandenong wasted more opportunities in the second term, but an important late goal to Corey Ellison trimmed the lead to eight points at half time. 34 STAR NEWS

The third term was one of complete domination. Jeremy Burton kicked a fine running goal just 18 seconds into the quarter to start what was a game-winning quarter of football for Dandenong. The Rays booted six goals to zero as Finlay Bayne and Bailey Williams slotted two goals each in the term. The likes of Lachlan Young, captain Campbell Hustwaite and Daniel Frampton asserted themselves on the contest to have Dandenong 34 points up at the final break. The Knights kicked with the wind in the final term and put on three goals to zero. Despite not registering a goal in the last quarter, Dandenong claimed its ninth win on the trot, 8.19 (67) to 8.2 (50). Lachlan Young and Campbell Hustwaite were superb, while Finlay Bayne and Bailey

Williams booted vital goals when they were needed. The Rays (13-1) have now locked up top spot on the ladder with two rounds to play. In a see-sawing battle against the Oakleigh Chargers, the Gippsland Power came away with the four points in a thriller. Gippsland jumped out to a 14-point lead at the first break, but the middle two quarters were dominated by Oakleigh as they scored five goals and held Gippsland to just one. Trailing by 14 points at the final change, Gippsland had the challenge set out in front of them and went to work immediately. Two early goals had the Power just two points adrift after five minutes and seemingly possessing all of the momentum. As had been the story all day, there was another twist in the game as Oakleigh replied with

two majors of its own. In the final 15 minutes of play, the Gippy boys willed themselves to victory, booting three majors and holding the Chargers to two behinds. Gippsland grabbed the lead with three minutes to play when Noah Gown kicked truly and they held on for a dramatic 9.6 (60) to 8.7 (55) win. Gown’s tremendous form continued with a best on ground performance, highlighted by kicking the match-winning goal, while Boadie Motton, Sam Flanders and Bailey Beck all impressed. Gippsland (10-2-2) sits second on the ladder. While there is no TAC Cup action this weekend, the Rays and Power travel to Ballarat to face the Geelong Falcons and Murray Bushrangers, respectively, on Saturday 18 August from 10am. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
