Trust in them After 25 years in Berwick, Paint Right has made the exciting move to Narre Warren. Owner Wayne Young and his team relocated to Vesper Drive on 1 June. The business started in Blackburn Square 25 years ago, before moving to the High Street for 7 years. It was in Adams Lane since Wayne took over in 1999. Wayne started his working life as an interior designer and furniture manufacturer, before buying Paint Right Berwick. The business has been a strong supporter of the community, supplying paint to local schools as well as sporting and men’s clubs and businesses. Wayne remembers when “the town was a village and you knew everyone on the street“. Certificates of appreciation proudly hang on the wall from the SES and local schools in acknowledgement of donations. Over the years Paint Right Berwick has been runner-up in the Berwick Show window display competition, made numerous donations to the Berwick Woodworkers Club and sponsored Relay for Life. Paint Right began a relationship with the Haymes family, ’Australia’s first family of paint’, in 1989. Proudly Australian owned, Haymes has been making paint in Ballarat since 1935. “They support small business and want their products sold in a personal environment where the use of their products is explained,” Wayne said. The store stocks a large selection of paints as well as wallpaper, industrial coatings, render, faux finishes, special effects paints and timber finishes. A colour consultant is available as well as equipment hire.

It’s a great shape. The unusual eight side building is working really well and we have plenty of space to do things and hold workshops in the future,” Wayne said. “We’re going to have some exclusive furniture paint and some specialised wood products, polishes and waxes to expand the product range. There will be a few different things from Berwick.” Paint Right is located at 3 Vesper Drive in Narre Warren. For more information, phone 8786 5797.

Grand opening almost set Secondary school students from 21 schools in Casey are only weeks away from having access to cutting edge learning at the new Casey Tech School. The Tech School is one of 10 being delivered as part of the State Government’s $128 million Tech School initiative, and is expected to open in early September. Now in its final stages of construction at the Berwick campus of the Chisholm Institute, the new two-storey building will include workshop areas, a biomed lab, a virtual reality lab, video production studio and a digital media studio. Director Ben Jenkinson said it was an exciting time for prospective students. “Casey Tech School will have considerable high-end technology and industry-specialist equipment that the schools themselves, could not afford,” he said. Up to 150 students will have the chance to working in small groups, learning advanced skills in STEAM disciplines as they aim to provide prototype solutions for real world, industry and community problems from the Casey region, Mr Jenkinson said. “Our building is due for completion in early September, with an official Ministerial OpenThe tech school is expected to open mid- 2018, as too is the health hub. 169038

ing likely to occur in mid-September. School programs will be delivered throughout the remainder of the year,” he said. “Prior to this opening, we are continuing to deliver small activations and curriculumtesting workshops within our partner schools, on campus at Chisholm Institute’s Berwick campus, or for the community at the CaseyCardinia Library at Bunjil Place.“

Minister for Educational James Merlino said Casey Tech School will form an important link between schools, TAFEs, universities and industry. “We need students to be ready for the jobs of the future and that’s why we’re investing in Tech Schools so they can get the hands-on learning with technology they need,” he said. The new school will focus on growth indus-

tries including biomedical technology, health and medical tech, and high-tech manufacturing, production and processing technologies. The State Government announced last year the Casey Tech School will provide 21,000 secondary school students from 21 schools in the area access to high-tech, specialised learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills.

Giving boys their best Theo Charalambous of OPSM Berwick. 182838

Berwick Grammar school captains Aidan Ferreira and Will Morgan. He said the resources and relationship with St Margaret's School, our senior girls campus, provided an educational resource many schools sought to replicate. Also, Berwick Grammar's affiliation with the IBSC (The International Boys School Coalition) places the research, programs and resources of the greatest schools and thinkers of education at its fingertips. "There are many exciting things happening as Berwick Grammar School focuses on growing good men - men who have the values and character to be great fathers, husbands, partners, employees and employers," Dr Middleton said. "Berwick Grammar School is certainly a school with an eye on innovation and the future, whilst drawing upon the very best traditions of the past." Berwick Grammar is located at 80 Tivendale Rd, Officer. To discover more about the leading boy's school, visit www.stmargarets.vic.edu.au/ berwickgrammar-school or phone (03) 9703 8111

Committed to eye care OPSM Berwick is dedicated to providing customers with world-class service and technology, as well as leading eye health advice, solutions and recommendations. Clinic owner and optometrist Theo Charalambous and his team are trained to detect potential eye problems before customers experience symptoms, enabling early diagnosis and treatment that can help protect vision. They also undergo regular professional development and training from the OPSM Institute of Learning. "80% of blindness is preventable," Mr Charalambous said. "There are many diseases out there ... and if some of them aren't corrected before a certain age they can lead to permanent vision loss. "Our eye tests aren't purely for glasses they're for eye health. So we are making sure that there is no disease there that could cause blindness in the future. into something that's permanent." Berwick OPSM offers a range of deals including packages for kid's glasses. The store also stocks French lenses and Italian frames, contains a contact lens practice and accepts all health funds. In addition, almost all eye-tests are bulkbilled so customers receive no out-of-pocket costs. Mr Charalambous also explained that the store is proud to be a part of the Berwick Business Group and that he is a strong believer in giving back to the local Berwick community. "We're really keen on being part of the community - if there's something we can support, we will," Mr Charalambous said. "If there's a charity, we give a pair of sunnies so they can auction them off. We're always getting involved whenever we can." OPSM Berwick is located at 1/57 High Street in Berwick. For more information, phone 9707 5556 or visit www.opsm.com.au. 12394950-CG32-18

A desire to develop good men is a common thread in the approach to educating boys across the world's best schools. While such an approach has been an historical element of boys' education, there is now greater focus on developing skills for life rather than just the completion of examinations at leading schools all over the globe. Berwick Grammar School Head of Campus, Dr Steven Middleton says this new approach to boys education has emerged over the past decade in response to the popular perception that contemporary schooling didn't meet male students' emotional, physical or holistic needs. "As the only dedicated boys school in our local area, Berwick Grammar School is uniquely placed to provide an education that meets the unique needs of boys," Dr Middleton said. "Our staff are particularly adept and experienced in meeting the various development needs of boys as they transition through the various phases of adolescence." Berwick Grammar challenges each boy to find his own brand of excellence, with a diverse range of co-curricular activities including sport and cultural pursuits designed to help them discover their inner passion. The school's Growing Good Men Project seeks to develop the leadership capacity and literacy capabilities of each boy as he transitions from childhood to adolescence and ultimately manhood. "This project is evidence based and underpinned by the latest thinking of educational leaders and academics from across the world," Dr Middleton said.

Counting the jewels in a By Narelle Coulter Over a cup of coffee in Gloria Jeans on a windy July day, Kay Drysdale and Peter Cousins sit down to talk about their best of Berwick. Kay and Peter have been part of the Berwick business community since the 1980s. Peter is the principal of Casey Partners Accountants and Business Advisors, a firm he established in 1986. Kay and her husband Jim have run Drysdale’s Berwick Village Jewellery since 1984 when they moved their business from Noble Park to Berwick, occupying a shop previously devoted to clock making. They are both passionate about Berwick, its past and its future. “We moved here just as they opened the first part of the bypass, “Kay explained. “Jim sat in the Main Street to see the traffic flow and make sure there were no large heavy trucks travelling through town. “ Before the couple moved their family to Berwick four years later, Jim would ride from Noble Park to open the shop in Berwick on his motorcycle raising a few eyebrows. Thirty four years later Drysdale’s Berwick Village Jewellery is an institution. “We still enjoy it, “said Kay. “The regulars say ’you can’t retire yet, Jim’.“ “I like Berwick because you can still walk down the street and people say hello to you. “ They both say it is the village feel of Berwick, its trees, parks and history that make it special. Their conversation bounces back and forth as they remember the people and personalities of the past. In his early days in Berwick Peter worked from the old GH Hudson Real Estate premises

Peter Cousins and Kay Drysdale are protective of Berwick's heritage. 182935 at 57 High Street where Neilson Real Estate is now. The amenities were a bit rougher in those days with an “outhouse in the backyard“. Among the characters they both remember are Bill Hudson, who was instrumental in establishing Pioneers Park, George Wilson, Marcel Fakhry, Charlie Gamble, Bill Minns and Ellis Loveridge. Kay remembers Bill Hudson’s determination and drive to retain part of the old Berwick Primary School site on the corner of Peel Street

and Lyall Road for community use. “You wouldn’t get Bill out the door without pledging money to help with the park project, “she said, laughing. Added Peter: “Bill used to tell a story about when he was young real estate agent in the town and how he would accept chickens from young people who couldn’t afford a deposit“. “They were original Berwick identities who are responsible for making Berwick what it is

today. They were great people. They’d do a deal on a handshake. That is how Berwick got to where it is today. “ They remember Ellis Loveridge’s hardware and garden supply store which stood where Woolworths is now located. Then there was the Blackburne family whose backyard was where Blackburne Square is now and George Wilson whose legacy is Wilson Botanic Park.

village’s long, rich history

The old Berwick Post Office is one of the village's most historic buildings. Then there is Bill Peeler who ran a supermarket in Main Street, where EightyOne Restaurant now trades. Bill’s building was the original Paternoster Grocer, Ionmonger and Produce Store with its marketing logo ’We defy competition’ on its front corner. They also remember when the outskirts of Berwick was productive farm land. “We used to have quite a few farming clients, which are not there anymore, “Peter said. “I remember when Eden Rise was beautiful

old farms, “added Kay, who also remembers when the town’s court house would still dispense justice once a week and walking through the stables at the back of the Berwick Inn. Wilson Botanic Park is one of Peter’s favourite parts of Berwick, along with the Old Cheese Factory, the village’s restaurants and cafes and its magnificent old trees. “Driving into Berwick and you see the trees in Main Street. You don’t see those in strip shopping centres, “he said.

For Kay it’s Akoonah Park and its monthly craft market. She takes her two Cockerspaniels walking through Akoonah Park every day. They are both concerned about the future of Berwick and are adamant that the village feel and Berwick’s heritage must be protected in the face of development pressures. They also bemoan the ongoing problems with parking in and around High Street. Peter thinks the solution is underground multi-level parking and for authorities to

come up with innovative ways to control the traffic and keep as much of it out of Berwick as possible. “I would hate to see multi-level car parking above ground. It needs to be contained underground. “The challenge is to maintain the village atmosphere and uniqueness which is why people come to Berwick. It is important to encourage unique shops and restaurants which will continue to attract people to the village.“

The Berwick Inn Hotel was established in 1857.

Hospital records tumble mer Gibb Street location could only ever care for 55 patients overnight, that number is a remarkable achievement for the growing workforce of caregivers at the Kangan Drive site." Ms Norman said she was delighted with the progress made so far this year. “We’ve moved sites, increased our full time employment base by over 40 per cent and we’re providing more care and making much needed services more readily available to the people in this community. "It’s been a massive undertaking but we have managed to meet the challenge head on. Despite the challenges of building and relocating to a new hospital, our caregivers have continued to deliver exceptional care achieving a high standard of patient satisfaction. It is imperative to us that we deliver care safely and leave our patients feeling cared for and cared about." Ms Norman has no doubt that the momentum of the past six months will continue. “I have no doubt that we will continue to grow given we are still introducing new doctors and commencing new services. We are still actively recruiting new caregivers and, given the growth has exceeded our planning, we are actively working on the next stages of redevelopment to ensure we can meet the demands of our rapidly growing community."

Since opening on 18 January this year, St John of God Berwick Hospital has welcomed over 350 babies and performed more than 6500 procedures. According to CEO Lisa Norman those numbers represent a significant growth in operations compared to the same time last year. With new units such as cardiac, intensive care and rehabilitation, the hospital has been able to open its doors to patients with a wider variety of medical conditions and undertake more complex surgery. The cardiovascular laboratory allows patients with chest pain related to reduced blood flow through the blood vessels in the heart to be treated locally and return to normal activities very quickly. Overall the hospital has seen a 42 per cent increase in patient days which has sparked the need to open another surgical unit on Level 4. It was thought the unit wasn't going to be needed for another two years but the demand has required it to open much earlier. “The expansion of our services means we can now care for patients who are more unwell or having more high risk surgery. It is wonderful to see local patients having their treatment locally rather than travelling long distances for this more specialised care that we are now able to offer. This is also very important to their family who are no longer required to travel long distances to visit their loved one” Ms Norman said. “And that number is continuing to grow. “We have planned a barbecue for our caregivers in August to celebrate a recent recordbreaking 110 patients being cared for overnight and now we have surpassed that number already with a record 126! Dr Paul Dowie, one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatrists, foot and leg pain expert and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, recently shed some light on common foot and leg concerns. “Foot, heel, ankle, knee and hip pain, injury and arthritis are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it’s important to find an experienced, designated musculoskeletal podiatrist to assist,” Dr Dowie said. “Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to undue stress on the feet and other joints and tissues within the legs, knees and hips.” Dr Dowie explained that even long-term injuries and degenerative conditions can now be successfully treated, without medications or surgery, thanks to natural regenerative treatments including Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma), prescription orthoses, stress and load management strategies. “Traditional treatments such as cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases, so it’s important to get accurate advice from someone who particularly specializes in foot and leg biomechanics and musculoskeletal medicine,” Dr Dowie said. “By combining the very latest medically re-

Property Lift out

Terrific work on tree day By Brendan Rees More than 300 residents rolled up their sleeves to plant to participate in Casey Council's Plant Your Roots event on Sunday 29 July. The day was a chance for the community to plant more than 11,000 indigenous plants at Hessell Road in Harkaway. The planting activities also provided opportunities for improved habitat of local species and for residents to get in touch with their environment. Plant your Roots is aligned with Australia's 'National Tree Day' to bring this broader project to a local level. Council aims to achieve fantastic environmental outcomes through the project which has grown in popularity. Rayhan and Zeeshan attended with their father Nurudeen Casey Council planting day. The woman's daughter Harpreet has pleaded for witnesses or anyone with information on Facebook's Casey Crime Page regarding the carjacking incident. A mother has been carjacked at gunpoint by a pair of thugs in Narre Warren South on Thursday 27 July. The victim, a 57-year-old of Narre Warren South was driving along Harrington Drive when a white coloured Volkswagen Golf SUV rear-ended her just after 9pm. Detective Sergeant Dean Higgins said the woman got out of her car to exchange details with the driver. She was approached by two men from the four wheel drive where police allege one of the men produced a handgun and demanded her keys.

"When she refused initially the male with the firearm has hit her with what we believe to be the butt of the firearm in the mouth," Detective Sgt Higgins said. The two men, described as African in appearance, got into the victim's car and drove away. The victim received minor facial injuries. Detective Sgt Higgins described the attack as "horrendous." "To have a firearm pointed at you and threatened with a firearm in the dark of night is horrific." Police have since located the SUV abandoned in a driveway in Dandenong where a man was also seen fleeing the car on Saturday 28 July.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Leanne Craven, coordinator of Blind Bight Community Centre

How long have you been with the Blind Bight Community Centre and what opportunities does it provide for the community? I have been at the centre for the last 8 years. Our centre aims to be a central point for the Coastal Villages community to come together in a safe, inclusive and friendly environment. We provide low cost programs and activities that are designed to engage, connect and strengthen the community and provide learning. We encourage community participation in our classes and activities to enhance health, social well-being and advance educational opportunities. What is something people don't know about you? That I use to be quite good at Karate. I can still do a roundhouse kick! What is the most memorable moment in your life? I love to travel, so there are many memorable moments when travelling.. such as the places you see and the people you meet. What is your favourite television show? Don't really have one. I do like to watch some trashy reality tv as I am curious as to why people behave in the way they do as well as documentaries and current affair type shows. At school, I ... always loved having fun and socializing. I wasn't the most studious of students! What is your favourite place to visit in Victoria? I have many favourite places but I think Bright would have to be one of my favourites. What is your favourite book? I have a few but a book that stands out for me would have to be the Kite Runner.

What has been your most embarrassing moment? Did a few crazy things when I was younger and don't really want to be reminded of them. Just very pleased that social media wasn't around back then to see it. What do you work towards in your free time? I am studying at Uni now which takes up a lot

Casey’s field of dreams

Back pocket pain in Paky By Rowan Forster

City of Casey plans to create a regional soccer precinct at Casey Fields. From left, Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett, Cardinia Shire Cr Collin Ross and Team 11 ambassador and multiple A-League championship winner Clint Bolton with St Peter''s College Cranbourne students Ronaldo and TJ. 180711 Casey Fields proposed as the training and administration base." Cr Ablett added that Council had received positive support and excitement from local residents and state sporting associations for the Master Plan and its future implementation. "Council is committed to ensuring full development of Casey Fields and looks forward to delivering key projects to ensure it reaches its potential," Cr Ablett said. "With Casey's population tipped to exceed 500,000 by 2041, Casey Fields will be an integral part of meeting the sporting and recreational needs of our growing community in the future and ensuring we have facilities that support pathways for Casey athletes to reach the heights of their chosen sport. "I encourage the community to check out the Casey Fields Master Plan and see what Council has in store for the region's premier sporting precinct."

Pakenham has notched the dubious title of being Victoria's bankruptcy capital. The suburb has the second highest rate of people declaring insolvency in Australia as a result of record mortgages, lacklustre wage growth and poor property investments. According to a report by credit information bureau Illion, 96 Pakenham residents collapsed into financial ruin in the past year to date. Berwick trailed closely behind with 65 people, the fifth highest figure in the state and a 30 per cent spike on the year prior. Excessive use of credit and loss of employment were also cited as contributing factors to the woeful statistic. Fitzpatricks Planning financial advisor Jon Fraser claimed the demographic of Pakenham - and other suburbs featuring in the top five - consisted of many young families and firsttime home buyers. He said they were most likely to struggle under the weight of heaving mortgages and illinformed financial decisions. "A lot of them are getting into the property market for the first time - particularly in Pakenham and Officer - and they're making errors and suffering the consequences," he said. "Their commitments are increasing, mortgages are reaching record highs, but the wage increases haven't filled that void. "I think many chose to file bankruptcy and walk away, not realising the long-term repercussions." Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data

supported Mr Fraser's analysis, with those aged 24 and younger making up 36 per cent of Cardinia Shire's population. According to the report, there was a 4 per cent increase in personal bankruptcies across the nation over the past financial year — with 32,350 Australians declaring themselves bankrupt. Chief executive of Illion, Simon Bligh, said rising debt levels and stagnant wage growth seaboard were a bad combination for consumers. "Consumer debt levels are rising steadily in Australia as a result of record mortgages and a surge in everyday essentials such as utilities, petrol and healthcare," he said. "These factors, combined with weak wage growth, are putting pressure on the wallets of Australians." Mr Bligh implored those suffering financial stress to carefully consider their options before declaring bankruptcy. "Anyone who is thinking about declaring bankruptcy should carefully weigh up their options," he said. "Bankruptcy has long-term effects on a person's financial position such as impacting their ability to borrow or even rent a home." The other three Victorian suburbs featuring alongside Pakenham and Berwick were Point Cook, Craigieburn and Werribee - all thriving growth areas. 12385060-RA32-18

Casey Council has adopted the Casey Fields Master Plan, which outlines how Council plans to bring the precinct to full development over the next 20 years. Some of the projects council plans to bring to fruition include the development of regional soccer and netball precincts, creation of a five-kilometre fitness trail, dog-friendly space and new park and expansion of the Regional Playspace. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said Council looked forward to further enhancing Casey Fields into the future. "Casey Fields is already the premier regional sport, recreation and play precinct in Melbourne's south-east, known widely for its size and success in providing such a diverse mix of quality facilities for a range of sports and recreation opportunities," he said. "This Master Plan will guide the development, renewal and management of the precinct over the next 20 years, including the 21 hectares of undeveloped land set aside for future sporting facility development. "Casey Fields provides important infrastructure to support its tenant clubs and has enabled key partnerships with elite sporting teams, Melbourne Football Club and the Melbourne Stars. "As well as servicing local sporting clubs, Casey Fields also hosts regional, state and national competitions, AFL Women's and AFL preseason matches, Women's Big Bash League games, major events such as the Melbourne Stars Family Day, and huge numbers of school carnivals every year. "As we further expand and enhance the site, Council looks forward to what other exciting opportunities might be possible. Our plans to create a regional soccer precinct at the site form an integral part of Team 11, the official bid of Melbourne's south-east to bring an ALeague and W-League club to the region, with

Family and friends came together for a friendly football match in memory of a much-loved team mate on Sunday 29 July. A fundraiser was held between Devon Meadows Junior Football Club and The Pines Junior Football Club at Casey Fields to support the family of the late Tom Cairney. Organised by Cranbourne East Secondary College and supported by the two football clubs, the day raised more than $4000. Activities included a sausage sizzle thanks to donations from Lyndon's Butcher Rowville and Casey Central Bakers Delight, face painting activities and a lolly jar guessing raffle. Tom, 14, died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition of the heart muscle that often shows no symptoms until it is too late. He died in his sleep from the condition in April this year. "We have lost not just a friend but a brother to all of us," said teammate and Cranbourne East Secondary College student Shaun Warren. "We decided to put together a fundraiser match game to help support Tom's family with all the expenses, just to help give them one less thing to worry about." Devon Meadows managed to win the game for Tom. "We walked off proud and into our rooms and sang our song loud and proud so Tom could hear us up there," Shaun said. Tom's mother Jodie Cairney said she was overwhelmed by the community's support. "We had a great turn out to watch the game which was made even better with a fantastic

"We have been shown amazing support and love from Tom's coaches, fellow team mates and their families as well as continuing to be embraced by the wider DMJFC family. We wish to thank everyone involved in making Tom's memorial game a success." Devon Meadows coach Brent McMillan said Tom was "one of the biggest hearts around" the club. "His development not only as a footballer but as a young man was astounding," he said. "His kindness towards others was probably his biggest asset." "On the footy field he was tough, courageous and most of all selfless. "These boys have shown a great level of maturity to push forward in Tommy's memory.

Shoplifter brings son, too By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne man has been chastised by a magistrate for involving his two-year-old son while shoplifting from a Bunnings store. The 24-year-old concealed $676 of outdoor lights in his son's pram during a family trip to the Springvale store on 29 July, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. "It doesn't get much lower than using your own child as cover," magistrate Jack Vandersteen said. "What does that say about your moral compass? "He's an innocent child."

The boy would look up to the accused as his "role model", Mr Vandersteen said. "Do you think he'll grow up to think it's OK to go in a shop and steal?" The man was also in breach of a full intervention order barring him from being near his girlfriend and child at the time, as well as in breach of bail and a corrections order. In June, the man breached the order by attending the girlfriend's home to "say goodbye before he got clean", the court heard. He also pleaded guilty to smashing two of her phones, punching two holes in her home's walls and calling her abusive names despite

the intervention order in March. At one point, the partner picked up her son to prevent the man from hitting her, the court was told. He later told police that he'd "flipped it" after the partner called him names for not getting up from bed. Defence lawyer Nick Power said it "flies in the face" with what the man had been learning at his mens behaviour change course. "It appears that drug use has played some part. "He tells me he doesn't want to expose his son to the things he's managed to do so far. He

Child-porn convictee appeals jail term By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren South man who pleaded guilty to knowingly possessing pornography of adults with children under 10 is appealing against his four-month jail term. Dean Meyer, 36, also pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to making sexuallyexplicit phone calls to five dance studios about girls featured on their websites between March 2014 and June 2017. One of the victims received four phone calls from Meyer, enquiring in graphic detail whether he could have sex with her daughter. The conversations made the complainants anxious, afraid and shaken, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted on 30 July. Police discovered 16 images and six videos of child-abuse material found on a computer tower, hard drive and DVD disk seized from Meyer’s home in October. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was concerned that Meyer offered no explanation

for his offending. Meyer told a psychiatrist about being significantly bullied as a child, including being raped by three people at school - though that was unsubstantiated, Mr Vandersteen noted. “Why did he ring these people? Why did he possess the child pornography?” Mr Vandersteen asked defence lawyer Farah Banihali. “I assume you asked him the same questions, and the psychiatrist as well. “There’s a brick wall.” Mr Vandersteen said there was a need to deter similar offenders from possessing such “terrible” child pornography. “There’s very much a need to protect children from adult interference,” Mr Vandersteen said. “They never should be exploited in such a way. None of them at all deserve to be violated and offended against by adults. “You’re part of the process. If people didn’t possess it, it would be unlikely that this child

abuse material would be produced.” Meyer was jailed for four months followed by a 12-month community corrections order with mental health and sex-offender programs. He was ordered to report to Victoria Police for the next eight years as a registered sexual offender. Meyer soon after indicated that he would appeal against the sentence. He was bailed to appear at the Victorian County Court on 21 September. As part of his bail, Meyer must report to police three times a week, live in a fixed abode, not access the Internet other than for work and banking purposes, and have no contact with under-18s.

wants to put a stop to it. "He doesn't have the maturity or the facility to do that without help." Magistrate Vandersteen said the man had "very high" compliance with his corrections order until he "dropped off" in April, Mr Vandersteen said. "And then you got into trouble." The man was convicted and placed on a supervised corrections order with judicial monitoring, drug testing and mental health treatment. He was ordered to pay $1300 restitution for the property damage.

Speeding P-plater loses licence By Brendan Rees A P-plater has been nabbed driving more than 30 km/h over the speed limit in Devon Meadows on Tuesday 31 July. Hot shots for the brigade Hampton Park fire brigade has been able to buy a high-tech piece of equipment with the potential to save more lives, thanks to the generosity of Bendigo Bank. Marriot Waters Bendigo Bank branch in Lyndhurst presented a $1000 cheque to members of the brigade on Tuesday 24 July. “In January 2017, we were approached by Hampton Park fire brigade to support their fundraising efforts towards the purchase of a Thermal Imaging Camera,” said Len Barda, senior manager of the Marriott Waters branch. “We were happy to help so kicked off our support with a grant of $1,000,” he said. Mr Barda said they also invited the CFA set up an in-branch display at the Marriott Waters branch where they could accept further donations towards the purchase of the camera.

“Last week the brigade contacted us and invited us to participate in some photos in thanks for our support,” he said. First Lieutenant Chris Gomolis said the equipment which uses infrared sensor technology, was vital on a fire line for finding hidden hotspots more effectively. “It allows us to see through heavy smoke and it picks up the thermal images of a person,” he said. “It will have the ability to potentially saves lives and perform internal search and rescues more effectively.” “We’re thankful that the Bendigo Bank and Cranbourne Classic Car Club who were willing to assist us in our quest.” Mr Barda said the Bendigo Bank has been able to invest more than $4 million back into the community for a number of community strengthening projects.

Outside Jason Wood MP's office in Berwick on a blustery Thursday morning, 12 activists stood in front of 12 empty chairs. The chairs represented the 12 asylum seekers who have died in offshore detention facilities in the past five years. Consisting of passionate members of the La Trobe group of the Grandmothers Against the Detention of Refugee Children, McMillian for Refugees and other standalone advocates, the group wanted to bring to Mr Wood's attention the views held by his constituents: that Australia is letting down refugees. "We are voicing our grave concerns about government policies which unfairly detain people both in Australia and in offshore detention on Manus and Nauru," Margaret Edwards said. Audience is left gasping By Brendan Rees Bell Shakespeare's new production of Julius Caesar left audiences breathless at how quickly violence reveals the fragility of democracy after it was performed at Bunjil Place on Tuesday 31 July. After four years directing Bell Shakespeare's productions for school audiences, James Evans was thrilled to lead the 2018 national tour, one of the most extensive undertaken by any Australian theatre company. "Julius Caesar is Shakespeare's political thriller. It's a masterpiece of intrigue and treachery," he said. "Shakespeare explores what happens when fear infects a society, and I think everyone can relate to that. It deals with issues that are urgently contemporary - audiences will recognise themselves and their society in the play. "It's also just a cracking great story, full of action and some of the most incredible language Shakespeare ever wrote." "Our production will expose the leadership flaws and human weaknesses of all the play's central characters. Everyone claims to be acting for the greater good, but how can a new society thrive when it is founded on an act of murder?" Evans said. Mark Antony (Sara Zwangobani) is played as a woman. "There's no particular reason why Mark Antony needs to be a man. Historically, he was a man but they thought I fitted the part, so I was very thrilled," said Zwangobani. Being her first production with Bell Shakespeare, Zwangobani said "Julius Caesar is such a great political thriller. I think it's great that

Bell has chosen to do it at the moment with what's been happening recently in Australian politics and obviously in American politics, I think doing this now is really important." "I've had a lot of people come to talk to me afterwards and just to say how much it made them think about the political climate currently. It makes us think about how much we need to be politically aware and politically active now." Zwangobani said they will be playing the show at a hundred venues nationally. "We're still very early. I think we're up to performance 12 so we're only a tenth of the way through," she said. "This gives us a great opportunity to just keep playing with these amazing words and keep developing these characters. I'm very excited to think 'Wow, what will I be like doing Mark Antony on show 50 compared to show 10."

Volunteers are recognised By Brendan Rees A commitment to raising funds for war veterans has landed two volunteers of the Berwick RSL sub-branch awards for their outstanding leadership. Appeals leader Sue Clark and deputy appeals leader Les Lucas have dedicated their time in running successful Anzac and Poppy Appeals for the past 10 years. The pair was each presented certificates of commendation for their outstanding efforts by RSL Victoria president Dr Rob Webster OAM, and state secretary Mick Annett on Sunday 15 July. President Wayne A'Vard, Berwick RSL praised the two volunteers for their focus on

recruiting and leading volunteers in covering a large number of locations across Casey-Cardinia. Ms Clark said without volunteers and the community they couldn't look after veterans. "It is our fabulous volunteer collectors we wish to thank, who so generously gave their time day after day, some travelled over 20 kilometres, but most importantly the community for their support. We could not achieve any of this without you," she said. Mr A'Vard said the event was an important part of the club's annual activities, "with good food, cheer and sharing tales of engaging the buying public, who we give thanks in their support of veterans."

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Riz is in the dot com loop By Narelle Coulter Chances are if you step into Riz Akhtar’s Volkswagen Golf as an Uber passenger you will be asked what car you drive and what was the experience like when you purchased it. Riz, 28, is the founder of dot.com start-up Carloop. Like many tech entrepreneurs he is Uber driving while he ploughs most of his time, energy and passion into his website. After 18 months in development, Carloop went live at the start of July promising to “put Aussies in the driver’s seat to buy confidently”. Riz says Uber driving provides “a bit of pocket money” but far more importantly, it provides the perfect market research opportunity as he refines Carloop. “You talk to people. You’ve got them for a bit of time so you try different pitches and see what works and doesn’t work, what clicks with certain demographics. I collate all that information at the end of the night. “I’ve met some really great people and I’ve built some really good connections. I’ve met the CEOs of companies as an Uber driver.” Riz was born in Pakistan and immigrated with his family first to New Zealand and then Australia as a boy. The family settled in Doveton and Riz attended Hallam Secondary College. He studied at RMIT for an associate degree in engineering , before transferring to mechanical engineering. While at university, Riz secured an internship with Bosch at Clayton and later worked on the Wonthaggi desalination plant. A job offer from Boral took him to Queensland where he worked on infrastructure for the 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as high rise projects on the Gold Coast. By 22 he was managing a team of 80. His goal to climb the corporate ladder was interrupted when his mum fell ill and he returned to Melbourne. After a stint in health care at private hospital Cabrini, Riz decided he had had enough of corporate life. “I wanted to find a place where the culture was a lot better. The industries I was working in were cut throat, the hours were long and they were controlled by government budgets,” he explained. “I had always been interested in technology and cars and the automotive industry in general.” The idea for Carloop first started nagging at him while he was working in Queensland. “When I moved to Queensland I didn’t know anyone there and the only people I knew were my work colleagues. They knew I was into cars and when you’re into cars everyone comes to you when they are buying a car for advice and

Carloop founder Riz Akhtar wants to simplify the new car buying process. 182767 help dealing with the dealers. “Because I helped quite a few of them I realised we were all wasting time talking to people that consumers generally don‘t trust.” Riz decided there must be a better way to avoid the countless hours consumers spend visiting dealerships, comparing prices and negotiating the purchase of a new car. Carloop shows the prices dealers are asking for more than 60 popular makes and models of cars and compares those prices to what Australians are actually paying for their cars. Riz said his aim was to bring trust and transparency to the industry. He hopes Carloop will save consumers thousands of dollars.

“I’ve heard stories of people who have gone from one dealer to another and saved 10 grand," he said. “The industry is just not transparent. Consumers feel like the dealers are there to get them and the dealers feel the same thing. “I thought there is a better way to empower Australians to save time and money and be that trusted helpful source. “ Riz spent 18 months crowd sourcing price data from across country. Type in Mazda 3 on the Carloop website and it will tell you that dealers ask $30,254 while in reality consumers pay $27,928. Consumers can receive a personalised sales

report in under 24 hours based on their geographic location. “I got a testimonial from a guy in NSW who said a process that would normally take him four weeks with our report he was able to do it in under a weekend." He hopes women feel confident using Carloop. The site's purple colour theme was no accident. "So far of the people who have requested reports 30 per cent are female. We want to increase that number. We are trying to make the site as easy to use as possible, not because we want to attract women but because it is targeted at everyone." He hopes profit will come down the track via Carloop directly linking consumers to reputable dealerships in their area. Riz hopes dealers will embrace Carloop and see it as a way to cut their overheads and save their salespeople time. “I have spoken to 50 dealership principals across the state and I can tell you their biggest issue isn’t negotiating and saving money on price. The biggest issue is the time the salesmen spend on the negotiating process. “Dealers may not be happy initially but long term vision is huge.” Riz has been sharing his dot.com journey by mentoring other young people who have bright ideas for the digital space. He is excited to be involved with the INNovation Crowd, a Casey Cardinia Region start up ecosystem, that will providing mentoring, meet-ups and help create the jobs of the future in the South East. “I mentor a lot of young people. There are a huge benefits for mentors and mentees to work together in the South East. We have enormous opportunities." In five years Riz says he wants Carloop to be “a trustable, transparent platform that Australians know and trust to be able to save them time and money and the hassle that comes with car buying". “Every morning I get up at 5am and get nothing for. I really want to solve this problem. I come across it all the time. There are thousands of people talking about it every day, but not many people are trying to solve the problem.” When he’s not interrupting the car industry, Riz likes to get behind the wheel of his Volkswagen Golf and head to the Dandenong Ranges. And his dream car? “My dream car is a BMW M5. I believe I have achieved a lot in my life considering where I came from, at the same time I am not the type of person who will show off. It is the type of car that can go fast but it looks like a normal car. I can’t do a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. That’s too much."

Early detection system sparks interest across nation A Casey based firm is at the forefront of cutting edge technology that could prevent another Black Saturday fire storm. Successful Endeavours helped develop an early detection system that detects equipment faults and vegetation ingress affecting rural powerlines. The Narre Warren based electronics design and embedded software development consultancy, helped start-up firm IND Technology with its Early Vegetation Fault Detection system for SWER (single wire earth return) systems. Based on state-of-the-art high speed digital signal processing technology and specialised RF antenna sensor technology, IND Technology designed an Early Fault Detection system that remotely monitors and detects partial discharges on overhead distribution lines and underground cable systems on a continuous 24 hour basis.

Casey Cardinia Region berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

In 2015 IND Technology approached Successful Endeavours managing director Ray Keefe to create a commercial version of the product including the highly technical web services needed to support the system. Mr Keefe said the the technology was “a world first developed in Melbourne“. “Every second, each device in the field sends a log of sophisticated mathematical data to the web services where it is stored and then passed through to a server cluster that analyses the data and determines the overall electrical health of the network as well as specific fault locations,“ Mr Keefe explained. “The technology relies on the atomic clocks on board the GPS satellites as well as some high speed local FPGA processing.“ In 2017 IND Technology won a State Government grant for the supply of 65 systems for northern and mid western Victoria. These had to be solar powered and were for

SWER lines. Successful Endeavours was again commissioned to do the engineering design and to produce the 65 systems. “As a result they detected a cable snap event that was equivalent to the incident that started a major Black Saturday fire,“ Mr Keefe said. Focus on holiday home tax for your holiday. “Holiday home owners also need to remember that if their property is rented to friends and family at mates rates, they can only claim deductions for expenses up to the amount of the income received.” Besides holiday rentals, the ATO is also focused on other times when a property is not rented or genuinely available for rent. Ms Anderson said some taxpayers claim their property is available for rent, but when the ATO investigates, it is clear they have little intention of renting it out. “We see things like unreasonable conditions placed on prospective renters, rental rates set above market rates, or failing to advertise a holiday home in a way that targets people who would be interested in it,” Ms Anderson said. This in turn impacts the deductions you can claim. “You can only claim deductions for your holiday home if your property is genuinely available for rent. “You cannot claim for times when you were using it for your own personal holidays or letting friends and family stay rent-free. “It’s not ok to expect everyone else to pay

They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Dates are locked in By Nick Creely The Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League Division 1 grand final will remain on Sunday 16 September, after the AFL South East commission considered a submission from a sector of MPNFL clubs. At a recent presidents meeting, several clubs sought to have the date changed to Saturday 15 September, based on the ability of participating clubs to capitalise financially, relating to post-game functions. AFL South East assessed the submission, and determined that the grand final remains on the Sunday, considering it unfair that only a six-day break would exist between the preliminary final (Sunday 9 September) and the grand final, which will be played at Frankston Park this year. The commission also noted the fact that the Peninsula grand final has been held on a Sunday since 1987, and did not see any reason for a change. A second submission - from one potential finalist - was to have the preliminary final changed to Saturday 8 September, and it was also rejected by the commission. This submission also included the changing of dates for the MPNFL Division 2 grand final from its current date of Saturday 8 September to Sunday 9 September, but was knocked back by the commission as it didn't see it as a reasonable solution. 2018 MPNFL Finals MPNFL DIVISION 1 WEEK 1 Saturday, 25 August - Chelsea Elimination Final Sunday, 26 August - Mornington Qualifying Final Netball Semi-Finals WEEK 2 Saturday, 1 September - Chelsea First Semi-Final Sunday, 2 September - Mornington Second Semi-Final Netball Preliminary Final WEEK 3

Holt cleared of all charges By Nick Creely AFL Victoria has declined to detail exactly how Cranbourne legend Marc Holt's six-week ban ban was overturned at an Appeal Board hearing on Wednesday 25 July, adding mystery to one of biggest stories in local football this season. At the initial AFL South East tribunal hearing on Tuesday 24 July, Holt was found guilty on two charges stemming from an incident that occurred during a half-time melee against the Wickers, and was handed a two week ban for striking and a four week ban for kicking. Video footage appeared to show Holt lash out at Wickers ruckman Matthew Young while being restrained by several players, before being ushered away by his team-mates towards the race. Berwick opted against launching an investigation after closely examining the footage, but AFL South East launched its own investigation in the days after and deemed the incident serious enough to take action. The independent tribunal appointed by AFL South East deliberated for approximately an hour before making its final decision, putting his season in danger of being over. The suspension put a cloud over when Holt could reach the magical 1000-goal milestone after falling just short in the Eagles' game against Tooradin-Dalmore with a sublime seven-goal effort in front of a mammoth home crowd. The club officially appealed the initial ban as expected, and took its case to AFL Victoria at 7pm on Wednesday 25 July for a tribunal hearing, where he was almost immediately cleared of all charges after pleading 'not guilty', and based on a lack of evidence was a free man. Cranbourne football director Manny Vella issued a statement on behalf of the club, and hopes the club can move on as they near finals in a strong position for a flag. "The Cranbourne Football club can confirm that (the) appeal hearing against Marc berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Holt has seen the charges dismissed, "the statement read. "We are pleased to see that due process has taken place. "Marc wishes to thank the club and those involved in clearing the charges brought on by the SEFNL investigation." After strong criticism came the SEFNL's way by many on social media, league chairman Ryan Ford has strongly defended how the incident played out, with Ford dismissing the notion of a "witch-hunt" against Holt. "All the bodies involved, which is SEFNL, AFL South East, the investigator and the tribunal, we've all followed due process," Ford said. "In terms of the criticism that come the SEFNL's way, after step one in the process, that's the end of us being involved. "I won't be involved in a competition as chairman that doesn't allow the video footage to not be investigated - the term "witch-hunt" has been used, and it's certainly not, it's an investigation, and we leave it at that. "At least we can then go back to the football community and say that we've investigated, and the outcome is that the matter's now closed." Ford said he was somewhat "surprised" to see the decision completely overturned, but said they have been in dialogue with AFL Victoria about how they can better educate themselves moving forward. "As much as we're surprised at the final deliberation, it's time to just get on with the game," he said. "It's all done behind closed doors - we don't get a report from the tribunal, we only get the outcome, so we don't get an understanding of why it was given two weeks and why it was given four weeks initially. "We've requested from AFL Victoria a better explanation and document highlighting the outcome, so we understand a little better, and so we can educate ourselves and the community as to why this happened."

By Nick Creely FOOTBALL FEDERATION VICTORIA SOCCER WRAP - ROUND 17 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST Casey Comets were unable to maintain the momentum from last week's barnstorming victory, this time going down to St Kilda SC 1-0 at Comets Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After brilliantly bouncing back against Mornington SC with a 2-1 win the week before away from home, the Comets were unable to replicate the result, in what was a winnable game. In other results, Warragul United drew 2-2 with Beaumaris SC at Baxter Park, while South Springvale fell 4-1 against Mornington SC at Warner Reserve. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST A dominant Doveton extended their break at the top of the table with a dominant 6-1 win over Heatherton United on Saturday night. The struggling United managed to stick with the Doves somewhat in the first half, with the ladder leaders up 2-0. The Doves were merciless in the second half, finding the back of the net on four more occasions to create a considerable distance from second spot. Meanwhile, down at HA Smith Reserve, Berwick City couldn't overcome a slow start to fall 2-1 against Old Scotch SC. The City - in desperate need of a win against a middle-ranked side - found themselves down 2-1 at half time, and were unable to find enough momentum to score again. David Di Lorio was the City goal scorer on the day. Berwick City faces Frankston Pines this coming weekend, while Doveton returns home to take on Mazenod Victory FC. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH A dominant first half display by Pakenham United set up a comfortable 2-0 win over White Star Dandenong on Saturday at Greaves Reserve, United scored almost immediately, with Lewis Mackie finding the back of the net to put the home side under the pump in the early stages. Daniel Castillo scored once more before the half time break, and the United held firm in the second half to take the points in an impressive performance. Casey Panthers also snared a big win against Knox United 2-1 at Prospect Hill. The Panthers were level 1-1 at half time in the clash, but managed to score in the second half to set up the important win. In other matches, Chelsea FC thumped Bunyip District 5-0 at Edithvale Reserve, Aspendale SC won 3-1 against Drouin at Jack Grut Reserve, while Somerville Eagles drew Old Mentonians 1-1. Lyndale United FC had the bye. Thursday, 2 August, 2018

Finals time for Cavaliers By Hayley Wildes It was a terrific weekend of Big V basketball action for the Casey Cavaliers. The State Championship men needed a win to secure their place in the finals. It was never going to be easy; facing the second-placed Waverley Falcons on their home court. With the Falcons leading 28-22 at quarter time, the Cavs came out on a mission to save their season in the second quarter. A ridiculous 26-2 run to begin the second term not only completely changed the complexion of the game, but the season too. The stunning 34-13 quarter had the Cavs leading 56-38 at the main break. Every player stepped up as Casey's determination and grit shone through. The Cavs' second quarter domination continued into the second half as they ran out 101-72 winners. Six Casey players scored in double figures, led by sharp-shooter Matt Donlan (23 points). The game of Raheem Lemons (18 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists) was tremendous as he finished his stunning regular season in typically dominant form. Courtesy of their massive win, the Cavs (139) didn't just sneak into finals, they made their way up to fifth position, relegating McKinnon to sixth and knocking Knox - who sat fifth before the final round - out of the all-important top six. The Division 1 women made the trip up to Mildura and came away with the minor premiership. Taking on the first-placed Heat, it was a battle for the top spot and Casey - who sat second - sent a message to the rest of the

competition on the eve of finals. The dynamic duo of Jamie-Lee Jeffs (32 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists) and Tanarly Hodd (27 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds) were sublime and led the Cavs to a massive 110-86 win. Stephanie Pal (15 points, 10 rebounds) posted an impressive double-double. The Cavs finished the regular season with an 18-4 record. The Youth League 2 women also claimed the minor premiership - highlighting the incredible level of talent in the Cavs' women's ranks. Taking on Frankston, the Cavs produced a great team effort to claim a strong 88-73 win. Six players scored in double figures, led by a huge double-double from Kimberley Shankland (24 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals). Casey's remarkable regular season netted 16 wins and just two losses. With finals tipping off this weekend, both women's teams have earned a week off after finishing top of their respective competitions. For the State Championship men, in what will be a massive match-up, they face the Hawthorn Magic in an elimination final on Saturday from 8pm at Boroondara Sports Complex in Balwyn North.

Melbourne United is up first, taking on Loyola Marymount University. United will face the American Division 1 college team on Thursday, 16 August at 7pm. 1000 reasons to celebrate By Nick Creely

201807161888_1-RA31-18

SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 13 It only took a matter of seconds for Marc Holt to make history on Saturday. In reality, it's taken the enigmatic Cranbourne legend over a decade of dominance to etch his name in local football folklore ... and it was worth the wait. Putting a tumultuous week behind him after being charged by the tribunal and then cleared the next night at an AFL Victoria appeals hearing, Holt's class and character loomed larger than anything else. Holt simply bleeds for the blue and gold jumper, and his 1000-goal milestone was worthy of its almighty celebration. In scenes reminiscent of the golden days of football, the sight of Cranbourne fans streaming onto the ground to celebrate the occasion will be one of the treasured memories when looking back at the history of the South East Football Netball League, which is in the latter stages of its final season. In what was one of the finest goals of the season to date, Holt - within minutes of the game starting against Officer - at his home ground, bended the ball from deep in the pocket to watch the ball sail through the big sticks after evading several defenders, and immediately took off down the wing, pointing to his adoring fans as they saw their man make history. Holt's achievement is a rarity for modern players, and his 1000th was spine-tingling, and in the contest of all his challenges along the way, perhaps his finest of them all. Cranbourne coach Steve O'Brien said he felt immense pride at watching Holt make history, and could only watch on in awe at his incredible 1000th goal, which took skill and class to pull off. "To be a small part of a wonderful journey was really satisfying - it was a great moment for our footy club," he said. "It just shows what a wonderful player he is - Marc's always going to be remembered as an incredible marking player, but he showed he has a full bag of tricks, with ground ball goals and the goal to bring his 1000th up was pretty special." O'Brien said that despite the moment being celebrated with gusto and passion, Holt's loyalty and desire to win shone through immediately after galloping down the wing and being swarmed by teammates and fans. "Our footy club won't forget the moment, he's been an incredible servant of our club, and he always puts us first, which is what makes him so special" he said. "Even as soon as he kicked the goal and celebrated, I'm pretty sure his first comments were 'let's get back to the game now' and that sums him up." The Eagles had all the momentum from the opening bounce, and ran away 13.16 (94) to 1.11 (17) winners after keeping the Kangaroos goalless until the final quarter, with Holt finishing with five and perennial goalkickers Nathan Gardiner and Tom Marks snaring six between them. O'Brien was pleased with the Eagles' ability to handle the pressure of the day, and said it showed growing maturity. "It was really pleasing (the game) - it was a big build up, and we tried to keep it as normal as possible, and we had some targets we wanted to achieve from the game. "For the boys to maintain the focus, and to tick all those boxes, it was really pleasing." Down at Kalora Park, Beaconsfield certainly showed some pluck, but Narre Warren - led superbly by experience and youth - were just one

Marc Holt snaps truly to bring up goal number 1000 for Cranbourne. 183377 step ahead as they all but secured the minor premiership on Saturday. In the eventual 14.15 (99) to 7.8 (50) victory over a depleted Eagles side still missing their spearhead Nathan Langley and competition superstar Scott Meyer, the Magpies continued on their winning ways. The win was set-up by a dominant first term display, with the Magpies controlling the football, and surging forward with speed. Stewart Scanlon converted the first major of the day by nailing his set-shot, and from there, the likes of Brad Scalzo through the midfield and young defender Jesse Davies repelling everything inspired a 21-point quarter time lead. Sheer forward class ensured the Eagles were unable to find a way back into the game despite showing some promising signs, with powerful trio Trent Shinners (four goals), Scanlon (three) and Nick Scanlon (three) putting Leigh McQuillen's side to the sword over the next three quarters. Magpies coach Matt Shinners was pleased with elements of the performance, but conceded that they will need to lift their game when they take on Cranbourne this week. "We probably weren't as clean this week as compared to last week, and we were a bit patchy - we had a couple of guys coming in because a couple of blokes were available for the VFL, so it's a bit hard," he said. "For those guys to come in and pick up the game style from reserves footy, they probably struggled a bit, but my senior players were really good. "I'm not going to say we're absolutely smashing it, but I know that my boys are looking forward to testing ourselves against the other form side in the competition (Cranbourne). "There's always room for improvement." Down at Edwin Flack Reserve, Berwick flexed its muscles to continue to build to its best form ahead of finals against Pakenham, 14.19 (103) to 6.6 (42). The Wickers were uncharacteristically sloppy in the opening exchanges, failing to score a goal in the opening quarter, allowing the Lions to take a 12-point lead into quarter time. That defensive game style that has served

Narre Warren youngster Tom Miller in action over the weekend. 183396 be frustrating the Wickers, who couldn't find their trademark dash at half-back. A spark - in the form of a cracking goal from Brody Connelly from the arc of 50 - got the Wickers going after being down by 17 points, and the home powered on to slam on a further three goals to wrestle the lead back at the major break. After half time, the Wickers got back to

brave Lions to slam on nine goals to two in the third and fourth quarters, with stars such as Harry Money (four goals), Bryce Rutherford, Tim Gunn and Bailey Asher all extremely influential after quarter time. In the final game of the round, TooradinDalmore kept the door slightly ajar for finals after easily accounting for Doveton, 16.15 (111) to 8.15 (63).

A gritty draw for Panthers By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 14 Noble Park recorded its fifth win of the season, easily accounting for Knox at home on the weekend. The Bulls led by 34 points at half-time and continued to run away with the game in the second half to claim a 17.22 (124) to 8.6 (53) win. Will Collis booted four majors, while Cosimo Anagnostou and Adam Giobbi were sublime. Rowville was ruthless against Montrose at Seebeck Oval, roaring to a 103-point win, 19.18 (132) to 3.11 (29). The Hawks were a class above as Riley D'Arcy and Jackson Anderson (four goals each) ran riot. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 16 A barnstorming five goal final term resulted in a draw between Chelsea and Pearcedale on Saturday, with the Panthers fighting back from a 25-point three quarter time deficit. Looking down and out in the eventual 13.12 (90) to 13.12 (90) result, the Panthers were on fire in the final term and just ran out of time. Snaring five goals, Travis Bravo was the star of the day, while midfield star Luke Dalmau was once again prominent as he builds into some electric form. Down at Glover Reserve, Devon Meadows were too strong for the struggling Crib Point, 15.18 (108) to 10.8 (68). Kicking six unanswered goals in the first term, the Panthers were never seriously challenged but the Magpies showed some fight to actually even up the final three quarters. The Panthers were well served by Michael Theodoridis, who kicked his third successive five goal haul, while Troy Aust was superb. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 15 The Doveton Eagles suffered just their second loss of the season. Doveton led by two points at the final change against Highett, but were overrun in the final term, falling 13.7 (85) to 10.14 (74). Michael Callinan and Cameron Carmody were best for the Eagles. Keysborough fought out a tough 15-point win against Hampton, 11.10 (76) to 8.13 (61). Chris Bryan (seven goals) was electric up forward. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 14 Endeavour Hills proved far too good for Hallam at home. The Falcons held the Hawks scoreless in the opening term and went on to claim a 13.21 (99) to 3.4 (22) win. Nick Gay was impressive for Endeavour Hills, while Rory McIvor was best for Hallam. Hampton Park was made to work in its win over Black Rock, eventually running out 9.12 (66) to 6.8 (44) winners. Shannon Henwood was stellar for the Redbacks and Justin Hill scored four goals. Heatherton was never troubled against South Yarra at home, winning 18.18 (126) to 6.7 (43). Heatherton's David White (seven goals) and Reagan Maddaford were in fine form. Springvale Districts held a 40-point advantage at quarter time against Ashwood and claimed a cruisy win, 15.15 (105) to 5.3 (33).

Endeavour Hills' Daniel Bartley snaps around the corner during his side's demolition of Hallam. Lachlan Morrey was superb. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 15 Lyndale dominated Moorabbin from the outset to claim a 101-point win, 22.22 (154) to 7.11 (53). Trent Day (six goals) and Bradley Edwards led the Pumas. Sandown was no match for Lyndhurst at home. The Cobras were never in the contest as the Lightning powered to a 15.17 (107) to 5.3 (33) win. Lyndhurst's Jeremy Jakupi (seven goals) was dominant up forward, while Jason Twite (three goals) was also superb. Josh Hurford and Brenton Walker battled valiantly for Sandown. Dandenong simply had no answers for a rampaging Frankston Dolphins side at Overport Park. The Dolphins did as they pleased and recorded a 20.17 (137) to 4.3 (27) win. Ben Khongbut and Scott Moody were best for the Redlegs. Carrum Patterson Lakes fell in an enthralling contest at home against Cerberus. With scores level at the final break, Cerberus stormed home to run out 15.14 (104) to 13.2 (80) winners. Douglas Watterson and Jonathan Hawes were dynamic for Carrum Patterson Lakes. VAFA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 15 St John's claimed their second win on the trot, and their fourth of the season, with a nailbiting win over Bulleen Templestowe AFC at Thomas Carroll Reserve. In a close battle all day, St John's led by 10 points at the final break and completed the job with a 14.15 (99) to 13.10 (88) win. Rohan Scott and Joshua Mourant (four goals each) powered the forward line, while Brendan Ash was pivotal in the clinches.

The Dandenong Stingrays just keep winning. This week, taking on the Calder Cannons at RAMS Arena, both teams had to deal with the typical windy conditions at Craigieburn and it was Dandenong which came out on top for its eighth win in a row. The opening quarter was a tough slog as both teams struggled to attack cleanly in the breezy conditions. Dandenong's defence stood up as Calder kicked with the wind and just a five-point quarter time deficit was a win for the Rays. With the aid of the wind, Dandenong scored three goals to zero in the second term as Finlay Bayne, captain Campbell Hustwaite and Bailey Williams got heavily involved. Williams' two first half goals were worth their weight in gold in the harsh conditions. The Rays took a 4.6 (30) to 2.3 (15) lead into the main break.

The third quarter was one that typified the Rays in 2018. Tough and uncompromising and despite being outscored three goals to one, Dandenong once again ensured the damage was as little as possible. Lachlan Young, Sam Fletcher and Jai Taylor were putting in a mountain of work - all three playing a major role in the Rays owning a onepoint lead at the final break. While the third term set up the win, the fourth was when Dandenong ran away with the four points. After a back-and-forth opening seven minutes of play, the Rays quickly slammed on two goals in a minute - courtesy of Jai Taylor and Jamie Plumridge - to jump out to a 16-point lead. Calder replied with a major, trimming the lead to 10 points, but then the floodgates opened for Dandenong. In a ruthless five minute patch of football, the Rays scored four goals as Jake Frawley, Jai Taylor, Finlay Bayne and Jamie Plumridge put

the game to bed. A late goal to Jaxon Stuart gave the Rays a 40-point win, 12.10 (82) to 6.6 (42). Finlay Bayne and Campbell Hustwaite were impressive all day as they roamed through the midfield, while Bailey Williams put in another eye-catching display. For all the star power the Rays possess, it is their ability to get an even contribution across the board that has catapulted them to top spot on the ladder with an incredible 12-1 record, currently riding an eight-game winning streak. Dandenong hasn't just been winning games over that stretch either - the side has been tearing opponents to shreds. An average winning margin of 56 points highlights the domination the Rays have enjoyed. They'll be looking to stretch their winning streak to nine games when they take on the Northern Knights at Preston City Oval on Saturday afternoon. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
