CFA crews took two hours to bring the fire under control. 178993 12376751-CB2-18

A water bomber and dozens of firefighters battled to contain a grass and scrub fire at a reserve in Cranbourne on Monday, 20 March. CFA firefighters were called to the reserve near Cherry Hills Drive at 5.15pm which was brought under control by about 7.30pm, with 18 tankers and crews from 15 brigades fighting the blaze. CFA operations officer Paul Summons said the fire burnt numerous trees, spanning an area of about 400 metres by 200 metres. Investigations into the cause have started, he said. “We believe it’s possibly suspicious.“ He said the fire had the potential to threaten neighbouring properties. “Most certainly if it wasn’t for the quick actions of CFA crews it would’ve threatened properties.” “We didn’t do any relocations whatsoever. We did door knock and inform the houses backing onto the reserve,” he said. “Because of the quick actions by the crews they were quite safe in their homes.” He said the fire also threatened a nearby horse stable. “The horses were a little bit spooked by it and certainly our aircraft was scaring the horses.” “Once we had it contained we re-tasked the helicopter somewhere else so we weren’t continuing to scare the horses,” he said. He added CFA had not been made aware of any horses being harmed. Devon Meadows fire brigade Captain Andrew Swain said the fire reached the canopy of a few trees but fortunately the weather conditions were favourable: “Little bit cooler, and the wind was down a little bit. Certainly with the resources that we threw at it early and with the helitack help we stopped it fairly quickly.” CFA sent an advice message for Botanic Ridge, Cranbourne, Cranbourne South and Cranbourne West which stated there was no threat to communities and for residents to stay informed and monitor conditions. Crews will continue to patrol the area for the next 24 hours and monitor for any hot spots. Crews from Carrum downs, Clyde, Cranbourne, Devon Meadows, Frankston, Hallam, Hampton Park, Langwarrin, Narre warren, Narre Warren North, Patterson River, Pearcedale, Skye, Tooradin and Warneet helped contain the fire.

Home is a person’s bedrock. Yet a decade after homelessness was raised by then-PM Kevin Rudd, the issue remains an “obscenity”. Many arrive in the Casey growth corridor, but ever more numbers are not finding a place to call home. Without steady shelter, a person and a family’s ability to lead fulfilled lives is seriously hampered. But like a canary in the mineshaft, it points to more people teetering on the edge of homelessness. More people living in instability can only lead to a deepening of social problems. Stable accommodation is a key factor that courts look for when assessing an offender’s prospects. Without that, their life of crime and disconnect from the mainstream has less chance of correction. Homelessness can flow from a mix of bad luck and personal circumstances - good people lose jobs, lose a partner, need to flee family violence. There is a working underclass also that hasn’t suffered a dramatic swing in fortune, yet struggle to afford a home. We all know about rising house prices, the dwindling supplies of affordable housing stock are much described. Public housing stocks have not kept pace, emergency accommodation is stretched and boarding houses have a vexed reputation. The issue seems vast and complex. But remember, homeless people don’t deserve to be shunned. As pastor Keith Vethaak, who feeds and hundreds in hardship, it’s not necessarily their fault. - Cam Lucadou-Wells

Blaze destroys recreation centre By Brendan Rees

Police have released an image of a man who may be able to assist their enquiries.

Police want public's help Smoke billows into the sky. 178788 “We were able to save one of the pet turtles inside,” Mr Summons said. He said there was no threat to neighbouring properties: “It was a successful firefight. It was a fantastic effort by out career firefighters and our volunteers.” Crews remained on scene to mop up and monitor hotspots until 10pm. CFA issued a message at the time for local residents, advising them to shut doors and windows and avoid breathing the heavy smoke. Police and Ambulance also attended and a nearby section of Berwick-Cranbourne Road was closed to traffic.

Thieves target fire ban signs By Brendan Rees Firefighters at Devon Meadows fire brigade have been left puzzled after two total fire ban road signs were allegedly stolen by callous thieves last weekend. The signs, which were placed at Finsbury Road and at the front of Cannons Creek fire station, were secured to posts and well-weighted down on the morning of Saturday, March 17. But by the following morning the signs, which belong to the Devon Meadows fire brigade, were discovered missing. Devon Meadows fire brigade captain Andrew Swain said members were bitterly disappointed. “It’s very unfortunate. One of them was tied to another sign outside the Five-Ways shop and the one at Canons Creek was tied down as well,” he said.

“It’s not like they blown away even though the wind was fairly windy. They’ve been purposefully removed.” Mr Swain said the signs may not have been worth much but it was an inconvenience for the brigade. “It’s just signs we now have to spend community money to replace, he said, adding “It’s just a distraction that the volunteer brigade doesn’t really need.” Mr Swain said in addition to attending local fires, crews from the brigade also assisted with a fire in Colac last Sunday, 18 March. The last thing the brigade needed was to worry about replacing the road signs, he said. “We’re busier enough with fires in the latter part of the season without having to worry police stations to do stolen reports on stolen signs.”

Firefighters tackled a large blaze at a retirement village in Cranbourne East on Wednesday, 15 March. Forty firefighters and 10 fire vehicles from Dandenong, Hallam, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Berwick and Clyde were called to the scene which erupted in a single-storey brick recreational centre shortly after 1pm. The centre was a section of the Blue Hills Retirement Village on Berwick-Cranbourne Road. The fire, which sent smoke billowing into the sky, caused the roof of the building to collapse. The fire was however brought under control at 2.45pm. CFA operations officer Paul Summons said the cause was yet to be determined and a fire investigator was examining the scene. “We believe that it’s started in the roof area,” he said. He said the recreation centre, which housed a swimming pool, workshop, gym and child care room, had been completely gutted. “Unfortunately it’s a total loss. It’s good our crews were able to prevent the spread of fire to any exposures. Nobody from the community was hurt.” He said it was lucky only one person was in the building at the time that was safely evacuated. “A passer-by alerted that person by banging on the window and pointing out that there was a fire on the roof. They were unaware initially.” “We were quite lucky. A couple of hours later and we would’ve had dozens and dozens of kids there for swimming lessons,” he said, adding “We had one minor injury to one of our firefighters.”

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Dianne Markham, Narre Warren SES volunteer.

What is something people don't know about you? I got my own Honda Shadow motor bike and license when our children began to grow. We had always holidayed on our Honda Gold Wing 1500cc which had a double side car, where the children would sit and I as a pillion on the back of the bike. Plus we towed a Cub trailer. As they grew they wanted to change places with me. What was your most memorable moment? Becoming a grandparent 3. What's the best thing about being involved at Narre Warren SES? The gift of being able to help the community in so many ways with a great bunch of trained volunteers. What is your favorite book? Our children's photo album What got you to join up to the SES? I had been looking at numerous ways to volunteer over two years but nothing jumped out at me. You can't just Google "volunteers", it takes a lot of looking and then l found an information-night advertisement in the local paper for my local SES Narre Warren unit and went along. Three years later I'm still there. At school I......was involved in lots of sports If I was PM for a day I ....would make TV stations put regular little flash-card type awareness ads on the road rules. Many people drive but l don't think they know the rules. Little regular awareness prompts would teach people and make our roads safer. Also we would have less road rage due to people being less frustrated with others. Which 6 dinner guests dead or alive , would you invite to dinner? Clark Gable , Pink, Dean Martin, Sandra Bullock, Red Skelton, Lily Tomlin What is your favorite holiday spot ? Whereever my husband is. Best concert you have been to? Phantom of the Opera.

1

Plan the school lunches. Ensuring your kids have healthy, filling lunches at school contributes to their well-being in a variety of ways. Not only will they be healthier, your kids will have improved concentration and stamina, and will generally be more comfortable both in the classroom and out.

2

Talk to your kids. With all the sorting and running around, it's easy to forget who's actually going to school and that they might be feeling some anxiety about it. Ask your kids how they're feeling about the new-year, what they're looking forward to (or not so much), and talk them through any worries they might have.

3

Clean and tidy the kids' rooms. In no way are we suggesting this is your job. Rather, encourage your kids to clean and tidy their rooms at least a week before going back to school. This should include creating a space to keep textbooks and sports gear and an appropriate environment to do homework, setting your kids up for an organised start to the year. Source: Lumo Energy

Dangerous parking plea By Brendan Rees A Casey councillor has called for drivers to take safer action when parking at a Cranbourne East school before a child is injured. Cr Amanda Stapledon says parents and carers were parking unsafely during pick-up and drop-off times at Cranbourne East Primary School. “I’ve had a number of phone calls from really concerned residents,” said Cr Stapledon. “We’ve probably done all we can from a council perspective. It’s now about driving and parking behaviours.” “The parents are either double parking or they’re parking against driveways, their blocking the rubbish bins; all of those things,” she said. She said it was a dangerous situation for children, adding “We really want to educate people safely.” Cr Stapledon said she also held concerns about unsafe parking at Cranbourne East Secondary school however Cranbourne East Primary School faced a narrower road on Bowyer Avenue. “Here all these people dropping their kids off competing in a very small local road. It’s a bigger problem than anywhere else,” she said. “It’s all about the way people parking and disrespecting other people and not caring about the impact they’re having.” At a Casey council meeting on 6 March, Cr Stapledon moved a motion for council officers to meet with the principals of Cranbourne East Primary and Cranbourne East Secondary as well as the school council presidents and residents who have reported unsafe parking. Cr Stapledon said she felt sorry for residents whose homes faced Cranbourne East Primary as they are “forever being barraged by parked cars” during pick-up and drop-off times.

Beating Sydney On a recent trip to the World Superbikes in Phillip Island our group had the good fortune of stopping at Cranbourne for breakfast. The food at The Atrium is sensational. This little restaurant is a gem. Who could imagine having a Michelin chef preparing the breakfast for us? I hope your readers appreciate his talents as much as we did. So much so we planned our trip home around breakfast and returned to The Atrium for a second time. I wish we had this in Sydney. Paul Doran, via email.

Eugene Cassar: About time Lucinda Tolmie: It isn't just this school. I think it is all school especially Narre Warren South P-12 College. They park in the side streets as well and up on the nature strips. This morning we were walking to school and the car instead of waiting in the traffic went up onto the nature strip to drop her child off. Right near the roundabout with lots of children around. More needs to be done. No standing signs mean nothing to some drivers. It means they park on the nature strip instead of the road. Aiden Coward: Stop building schools with no frigging parking. Hayley Anne Watts: Hahaha we were going to get the house on this street Jamie Sibbald: Need to take a trip to Lang Lang primary school can barely get out of my street every day and kids run out from blind spots everywhere one day a child will get hurt Tania Millar: Out the front of Fleetwood Primary is just as bad most days. Debra Kennedy: I live near a school and parents r crazy a child has been hit but nothing changed ; more people could walk too that would help Jmh Margarita Head: I cannot understand how they built the new Wilandra Rise PS, Clyde North YMCA and Selandra Kinder all in same site, with ONE road in and out! Why is there no road on the south side of school to feed traffic onto Heather grove? Cars now parking on both sides of Black-

ledge Dr, creating one way traffic only and blind corner at Haflinger Avenue intersection. Angela Davies: It's most schools in Casey Kay Bbk: I'm sure it's all schools with the same problem. Is there are so many children and not enough car parks. For pick up and drop off. Barbara J Burley: Common sense would have been whoever planned the location of these schools would have allowed for wider roads instead it's about the mighty dollar Naomi Mactaggart: This is every school in the south east cos there is no parking it's a joke Lisa Ambrose: Mossgiel Park Primary in Endeavour Hills. Parents at that school should hand their licences in. The parents who park in Gleneagles Drive are fantastic, but honestly... the parents who park in Scotsburn Way are an abomination. We have contacted local council, the school itself and local police. Nothing has changed. The most disrespectful, rude people I have encountered in the suburb. Mossgiel Park Primary has never taken any action that has influenced the behaviour of parents picking up students. Parents completely disregard common courtesy. Their children leave rubbish on lawns, run in front of traffic. Parents park in the bus stop of an already congested street. Parents ignore signage, and when confronted become abusive. Completely unfair to people who reside in the street. Karlie Gray: Cranbourne West is even worse-a whole section of Duff St and Monahans Rd becomes a parking lot and not to mention all the parents that decide to use and block up the service lanes (and driveways!!) close by to the school-instead of using the public parking across the road at the Coles carpark.

Thumbs down To the parking at Cranbourne station. There will be a head on down the private road with all of the people parking along the narrow road.

Thumbs down To the traffic congestion in all areas of Casey at peak hour is a disgrace.

Thumbs up: To all the CFA volleys that have given up their time, to join strike teams, to be sent far and wide in these terrible conditions. Also, the ones that stayed home to protect the locals.

Thumbs down To crime

Thumbs down To the amount of people that catch the buses and Don't have myki's. I counted nine people (all ages) on one journey from cranbourne park shopping centre to Casey central. Bus driver didn't say a word.

additional rehoming opportunities for Greyhounds and we are delighted that they have provided extra dogs to our adoption centres for this promotion," Ms Walker said. She said Greyhounds were intelligent, friendly dogs with a gentle and sensitive temperament. "They are well suited to a variety of different lifestyles and homes, which is why they continue to be one of our most popular dogs

among those adopting." "Although they are often bred for sprinting, many Greyhounds do not require excessive amounts of exercise and, after their regular walk and play time, will happily curl up in a comfy spot, often on their owner's couch." "We invite those interested in adopting a Greyhound to visit one of our centres during this promotion to meet their potential new family member," she said.

Community fundraiser for Leukaemia Foundation Hairhouse Warehouse at Cranbourne Park hosted a World's Greatest Shave fundraising day where people had their hair shaved or coloured on Saturday, 17 March. All money raised will help fund research for the Leukaemia Foundation's so more people survive blood cancers like lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma. One customer Amanda Smith who had long blonde plaits shaved her head to raise $1000. Two sisters aged six years old raised more than $500 by cutting their plaits while others raised $300. The store has hosted the event for the past 10 years - a cause staff hold dearly to their hearts. People of all ages either shaved or coloured their hair, cut pony tails, and shaved their beards. Owner Sophie Margaritis said the event once again showcased the outstanding community spirit with a generosity in helping others. "We thank the beautiful people who supported the great cause. We love our community spirit." To view more photos check out HairhouseWarehouse Cranbourne on Facebook or visit instagram #hairhousecranbourne.Coining a future

Federal Minister for Health, Greg Hunt visits the reopening of the Junction Village Men’s shed in Cranbourne. Picture: CONTRIBUTED which raised $2800 and helped with the shed's revamp. "It's a new start for us basically. We just had too much junk," Mr Cahill said. Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt, who attended the reopening of the Men's Shed last week, said the revamp would allow more men in the community to build new friendships, skills and community connections. "This shed provides great opportunities for residents of the retirement village and the wider general community to be active, create new social connections and put their skills to use to help the disadvantaged," he said. "I know that last year seven senior elves made 186 toys made for the Salvation Army to give out at Christmas and they're already hard at work to beat that number this year." The team is looking forward to getting started on their yearly quota of toys for the Salvation Army Children's Christmas Appeal, hoping to nearly double the amount of toys made from last year due to the upgrades.

Recently, the meetings which follow a councillor dinner have been starting closer to 7pm than their scheduled 6.30pm starting time. The meetings have also, of late, habitually dragged on to past a 9pm finish.

Eggs thrown at home A Cranbourne woman has told her disgust after her home was allegedly egged by thugs on Thursday, 15th of March. Beth Roberts, who lives opposite J and P Camms Reserve said it was quite a "scary feeling" when she thought someone had initially smashed her windows at about 11.30pm. "Someone drove passed my house and splattered my front windows with eggs. They then came back five minutes later and screamed 'How do you like those eggs?' " she posted on Casey Crime Page. "Unfortunately they had vanished so fast, we couldn't get any information on what type of car they were driving or what the people looked like but I have contacted the police and they have put a report in." "I don't know if this was a targeted act or just something random," she said. She said no damaged was caused to her home but added "The sound of the eggs hitting the window even woke my neighbour." Cranbourne police are investigating.

Could Casey Council be one of the first to dabble in cryptocurrencies? The council is set to investigate whether it will start to accept payments in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Councillor Sam Aziz said many "corporate players" had joined that particular "game". It was worthwhile for Casey to be the first Australian council to explore such possibilities, and give more options for customers to transact with the council, he said.

Late to start, late to finish Casey Council meetings have been getting off to tardy starts since moving into Bunjil Place late last year.

A dedicated group of retirees have breathed new life into the Junction Village Men's Shed in Cranbourne. A major upgrade to the shed's facilities was made possible thanks to a $2,000 grant from the Australian Government's National Shed Development Programme and a $1000 donation from Aveo Group. The grants supported the purchase of tools and equipment, community projects and training, building maintenance and development, and health improvement activities. Men's Shed spokesman Garry Cahill said the group was delighted with their new work spaces. "We've made bigger benches, we've moved our tools around, just gives it a more open look and feel," he said. "It's fantastic; all brand new work benches and each person has got their own work space now. We just decided to completely revamp it again and pull out all the benches and totally rebuild it internally." He said five men from the Men's Shed aged 64 to 88 years old dedicated three months of their time to complete the project. "We had a two metre skip and we filled that up with rubbish. It just looked so cluttered and now it's just a lot more attractive to members which we're looking for." Mr Cahill said the Men's Shed, which is located at the Aveo Botanic Gardens Retirement Village, improved the health and wellbeing by promoting social inclusion. "The fellas just love going there and contributing, particularly now obviously they're retired they can now give back to the community, particularly with making the wooden toys." He said the men hosted a sausage sizzle fundraiser through Bunnings last Christmas

Parrots warm up for winter

Brian and Angela Rollason of Brian's Gourmet Meats in Lyndhurst display a range of gluten free Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS food. 178787

Gluten gone By Brendan Rees You won't find one crumb or drop of marinade that contains gluten at Brian's Gourmet Meats in Lyndhurst. That's because the business is the first butcher nationally to gain Coeliac Australia accreditation for gluten free. Butcher Brian Rollason said he was inspired to take the business gluten free by his neighbour's daughter, Tayani who has coeliac disease. "Hearing about the difficulty people with coeliac disease experience finding gluten free options of their favourite crumbed or marinated meats inspired us to take the business gluten free," Mr Rollason said. He said the accreditation showed their customers they took gluten free seriously: "Our processes reflect the highest standard of gluten free preparation and service." People living with coeliac disease can't eat

gluten - a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. Brian made it his mission to source all local gluten free ingredients, finding the best tasting gluten free breadcrumbs, pastry and marinades the whole family could enjoy. The popular butcher met rigorous requirements including an on-site audit and laboratory testing of food samples. Mr Rollason's wife, Angela said they were "We're over the moon. It's been a lot of hard work. We've made it gluten free but yummy." "It was all about having a good quality product that tastes good and the whole family can have." Coeliac Australia Project Officer Cathy Di Bella said "We welcome Brian's Gourmet Meats to our Accreditation Program and we invite all local businesses to take up the gluten free challenge to enable all gluten free diners to dine with confidence."

A new aviary complex has been built at Moonlit Sanctuary to help the critically-endangered orange-bellied parrot survive in winter. Federal Member for Flinders Greg Hunt was pleased to announce Pearcedale's wildlife conservation park had been chosen to spearhead a project in protecting vulnerable Australian species. Every year the orange-bellied parrots migrate between Victoria and Tasmania. But a high proportion of wild-born first year parrots fail to complete their first migration. "With only 50 adults left in the wild, and around 350 adult birds in captivity, we need to increase the breeding population - every bird matters here," Mr Hunt said. He said the aviary, which was opened last week, would house first-year wild birds to protect them through winter. Due to its low numbers, the species was identified as requiring emergency interventions like capture and ranching, Mr Hunt said. "Using this technique, known as 'ranching', the birds will be released back into the wild population in Tasmania next summer, increasing the breeding population in 2018-19. "If successful, Zoos Victoria, Moonlit Sanctuary, the Tasmanian Government and the orange-bellied parrot recovery team will repeat the project in the next migration season." Park director Michael Johnson said the new $55,000 aviary complex also received funding from Zoos Victoria and was a great opportunity to breed more orange-bellied parrots. "They're already in the aviary which is great," he said. "Just an opportunity to make sure we keep some of important females over winter so they can be released back into the wild in Tasmania next spring for the summer breeding program." "We're in the natural habitat range of the orange-bellied parrot over winter so they'll have the same sort of climatic conditions, they'll have access to some of the same food

Federal Member for Flinders, Greg Hunt, centre, with Moonlit Sanctuary park director Michael Johnson and Life Sciences manager Lisa Tuthill.

Federal Minister for the Environment and Energy Josh Frydenberg, said the Coalition Government had spent more than $6 million for projects to support the parrot since 2014. "This includes multi-year emergency biosecurity measures, vaccination protocols for controlling pisttacine beak and feather disease - a key threat to the birds - and supporting recovery actions guided by the Orange-bellied Parrot Strategic Action Planning Group." The orange-bellied parrot is one of 20 birds targeted for recovery under the Threatened Species Strategy.

Leading the way to a bright future By Brendan Rees Cranbourne North's Tulliallan Primary School has announced their new school leaders for 2018. The school presented 31 proud students with their leader badges at a special school assembly on Monday, 19 March. Four school captains, eight house captains, eight specialist leaders and 11 Student Representative Council students were recognised in front of the school community. The Year Six student leaders delivered a speech about their leadership qualties and how they upheld the school's values of respect, relationships, responsibility and resilience. Guest speakers, and inaugural 2017 school captains presented the badges to the leaders and also spoke to the audience of students and parents about the importance of leadership and the qualities needed to be a good leader. Principal of Tulliallan Primary School Kathy Sharp said "Student leaders at our school are taught to influence others for the greater good for all." "The students develop positive relationships and show others how to share and role model and understandings of being a part of a school community," she said. Joshua, Dana, Sadaf and Nickau were selected as school captains. Appointed as house captains were Zakary and Kishara (Rossiter); Wade and Lousia (Strettle); Shawn and Nazifa (Elder); and Davanga and Aedan (Mitchell). Elected as specialist leaders were Mahin and Ranudi (Art); Wagar and Dulana (Music);

School vegie garden inspires kids By Brendan Rees Green-fingered pupils at Tooradin Primary School have been busy thriving in their school vegetable garden. With no qualms about getting their hands dirty, the students have enjoyed fortnightly gardening classes in planting and cultivating their own class garden beds. The sessions are aimed to be a relaxed and engaging learning environment, allowing students to connect with the garden and natural space. “They are developing a rich understanding of where their food begins, how it grows, the time and care it requires and ultimately how healthy it is to be eating the organic foods,” said Wellbeing Coordinator Rachel Davis. “They have huge smiles as they are pulling out the old produce, finding bugs and replanting the vegetables they will be using in the coming months to cook up into a delicious feast in the school kitchen.”

A quilting group in Cranbourne are getting ready to stitch up a good cause. The St John's Quilters will run its annual exhibition and raffle during a three-day exhibition in April. At this year's event the group will raise funds for the Blairlogie Living and Learning Inc. in Cranbourne South. The quilters will display their craftwork and quilts at St John's Anglican Church in Childers Street, Cranbourne. There will also be a raffle with one night getaway prize up for grabs for two people at the RACV Inverloch Resort including breakfast and dinner. "Blairlogie have now partnered with the Wolfdene Foundation to build individual units for adults living with a disability." Ms Mitchell said patchwork and quilting enthusiasts would also have an opportunity to shop till they drop whilst supporting local patchwork shops. The exhibition will be on display on Saturday, 14 April from 10am-4pm and Sunday, 15 April from 12pm-4pm. Entry is $5.

Dying for a cure By Brendan Rees

Sarah Mader was all smiles after colouring her hair for a worthy cause. 178681 Picture: GARY SISSONS

Sarah Mader is loving her new multi-coloured hair style. But by doing it, she has raised money for an important cause. After learning her partner, Mark was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia last New Year's Eve, Ms Mader wanted to do all she could to support him "I'd give anything for him not to have to go through this," she said. "If we can fund a cure perhaps others won't have to." And just like that, Ms Mader of Cranbourne, decided to sign up to the World's Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation.

She shared her profile on Facebook, and the support quickly rolled in from the community. Her fundraising target was $3000. To date, she has raised $2560. Ms Mader had her hair coloured purple and blue at Zenity Hair Salon in Cranbourne East on Wednesday, 14 March. "I absolutely love it," she says. "I would've happily shaved," she said. "I left it up to the donors whether I would shave or colour my hair. I just kept a tally going." Ms Mader had never met the hairdresser before but says "I know she did some radical colours." "I got a hold of her and why I'm doing it and she was great. She donated her time, her products, her talent."

In January, Mark was fighting for his life desperate for platelet donations. Fortunately, he survived with several bags of Human Leukocyte Antigen matched platelets. But Mark is back in hospital again starting his second round of chemo. "Hopefully this goes a lot better than the last time," Ms Mader said. She said leukaemia patients relied on platelet donations to survive and encouraged everyone to make blood donations. Anyone interested in sponsoring Ms Mader can visit: https://secure.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/registrant/FundraisingPage. aspx?RegistrationID=699809.

Car vandals tap and go By Brendan Rees A Berwick man whose partner's car was broken into has spoken of his shock over the incident. The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said the car was parked on John Fisher Drive, Berwick where he found the passenger side window smashed at about 9.30am last Monday, 12 March. "They took my partner's entire purse so they have all her ID, everything...driver licence, banks cards," he said. "They took a bag which they thought had money but it was a bag of make-up." "They subsequently used her tap and pay debit card up at the Berwick Liquorland and Beaconsfield Liquorland." He said he believed the incident took place at about 6am last Monday morning as his brother heard a dog barking but "didn't

think anything of it". "It was pretty alarming to be honest. I've lived in Casey since I was born. I never really thought that Berwick was the area where that sort of thing happens." "My partner was in tears, she was quite distraught." Adding to the frustration, he said he waited for eight hours until police arrived at his home to fingerprint the car. "We were told they (police) would be out shortly. Then we called four times. Then they finally came at 6pm, he said. "I don't know if there's a lack of money or lack of police actually on the ground. Eight hours is way too long." Narre Warren police are investigating. Constable Benedos said the fingerprints obtained from the car had not led to any possible suspects and there was no CCTV footage.

Lynbrook residents hope school crossing supervisors will be approved for the South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard intersection. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Council signals support for crossing supervisors By Brendan Rees A plea from the Lynbrook community to improve safety at a busy intersection in Lynbrook has been answered with the City of Casey committed to introducing crossing supervisors. Casey Council conducted a pedestrian count during peak school times at the South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard intersection which met the requirement for school crossing supervisors to be placed on the south-west side of the intersection near the Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre. Casey councillors voted to submit the results and a funding submission to VicRoads for two supervisors to start in July at their Tuesday, 13 March meeting. It comes as the council accepted a petition of 164 signatures from concerned residents seeking a supervised school crossing at the intersection which was tabled at a council meeting on 5 December last year. The 893-bus route is also planned for rerouting so the southbound services continue along Lynbrook Boulevard and stop at Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre. "This would remove the need for passengers to cross the South Gippsland Highway to access Lynbrook Village," a council report states. Casey councillor Damien Rosario said he was pleased action was being taken to improving safety at the intersection. "A lot of children do cross that interseccranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

tion to get to the buses and I'm very pleased to see in the report that the bus routes actually changing and hopefully be signed off soon," he said "That's a big win for council I think our advocacy. It takes a split second for someone to get run over if they're not looking or expecting a vehicle to cross through a red light." But Cr Rosario added: "I acknowledge VicRoads have done some works there with static signs; we need to go further than that." VicRoads manager movement and safety (metro south east) Sasha Yarwood said safety was being taken seriously at the intersection with the removal of vegetation, upgrading the traffic light lanterns to LEDs and increasing warning signage. "We will continue to monitor this intersection and work with the Lynbrook community to ensure this location is as safe for road users as possible," he said. Last year VicRoads installed prepare to stop signs and static traffic light warning signs. A review of the Department of Justice and Regulation infringement notice record confirmed a large reduction in vehicles running red lights since the LED upgrade, VicRoads says. Casey Councillor Wayne Smith said he believed the intersection had one of the highest rates of traffic collisions. The event is set to be a fantastic evening out for the entire family with market stalls, food vendors and free kids' activities on offer. “We are very conscious of including and supporting our local community,” Lynbrook Village marketing manager Melanie Brown said. “We love the idea of people coming to the event at the shopping centre where they can enjoy everything on offer within our outdoor space - a space we love to share with the public. FOCUS ON … EASTER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Children go on croc hunt Some brave children set out on a daring quest to find a large reptile in Cranbourne last week. Hosted by the City of Casey and now in its 10th year, the annual Woodlands Walk saw children and their families explore the Royal Botanic Gardens on Thursday, 15 March - in search of a crocodile. This year’s adventure walk was based on the book ‘We’re going on a Croc Hunt’ by Laine Mitchell and Louis Shea. The book centres on themes of exploration, wonder, and the sensory qualities of different Australian landscapes. The walk, which was attended by more than 300 people, promoted literacy, nature and exploration for children. At the end of the walk, children enjoyed engaging in a range of nature play activities and also experienced an Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony. The gardens is hosting a range of activities over the school holidays. See next week's Cranbourne News for details.

Hampton Park LJ Hooker Hampton Park named on national ranking Call the No. 1 LJ Hooker Office in Victoria for all your Real Estate needs LJ Hooker Hampton Park has again cemented its position in the real estate industry’s pre-eminent rankings, this year being named the 32nd best performing sales agency in Australia by industry publication REB (Real Estate Business Online).

CoreLogic Data showed the median house price in Hampton Park had risen 20.4 percent over the past 12 months (to $487,000) whilst units rose 14.6 per cent ($370,000). “The cash rate remained unchanged over 2017 and that has encouraged both owner-occupants and investors to compete in the marketplace, placing pressure on property prices,” Mr Deo said.

TOP 50 SALES OFFICES 2018

LJ Hooker’s Network Chief, Graeme Hyde praised John and the entire LJ Hooker Hampton Park team claiming the ranking was recognition of the office’s attitude towards exceptional customer service.

32

The office was last in the ranking in 2016 ranking in at number 42.

“Being named in the Top 50 best real estate offices in the country is a vast achievement for LJ Hooker Hampton Park and is a testament to the offices commitment to their local community,” Mr Hyde said.

LJ HOOKER HAMPTON PARK

LJ Hooker Hampton Park Principal John Deo said while the ranking underpinned the professionalism of the team, it also highlighted the increased confidence in Hampton Park area.

“LJ Hooker is the most recognised brand in real estate; however, it is the professionalism and dedication displayed by offices like Hampton Park that makes LJ Hooker the most trusted.”

The agency recorded a 61 per cent success rate from its listings over the past 12 months (461 listings for 282 sales) and was only one of four offices mentioned in the ranking in the LJ Hooker Hampton Park sold a combined $135 million worth of property over the period. The list ranks real estate sales offices across Australia according to a range of metrics, including efficiency, conversion ratios, number of sales and sales volume.

By Brendan Rees Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club has been left reeling after heartless thieves allegedly broke into their club rooms in Cranbourne East on Saturday morning, 10 March. Club president Ross Hibbins said intruders made away with about a thousand dollars' worth of goods after forcing their way through a locked roller door and entering the kitchen area sometime between 4am and 7am at Casey Fields. "They've taken a little bit of cash, bit of alcohol, soft drinks, chocolates, chips. So looks like it was kids," he said. He said they also rummaged through cupboards." We had game day food there so took the meat and the cakes, biscuits and stuff." "They didn't seem to go any further than the kitchen. They just got what they could probably carry out to their cars." A tin containing about $300 was also taken from the kitchen bench. "We think it was a quick run and grab," Mr Hibbins said. The intruders had ripped a door handle off to the players change room but did not gain entry. However they were able to prise open the kitchen roller door, he said. He said the club would have to fork out about $700 in damages, adding it probably wouldn't be worth going through insurance as the excess would be higher. "It was more frustrating. To go down the tubes $700 or so is hurts quite a lot," he added. The club, which is owned by the City of Casey council, is without CCTV cameras. "Given the fact that we're so isolated at the back there we should be pushing to get cameras." "The club can't afford putting cameras on and the City of Casey haven't come to the party." Club administration manager Laurie Stevens said it was a big setback for the club.

Caring family practice Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club administration manager Laurie Stevens points to where the thieves allegedly took a tin containing cash. 178688 Picture: BRENDAN REES "It's disgraceful. We get here early to get set up (last Saturday) and took us a couple hours to sort all this out," he said. "It leaves a bad taste in your mouth." He said the thieves also tried to pull the alarm off from the front of the clubrooms but were unsuccessful. A small power board door was also bent and a lock was broken at the rear where the intruders gained access to the switch box and turned all the power off. An alarm on the kitchen ceiling was also dismantled, he said. Mr Stevens said CCTV cameras would be ideal to deter intruders. "We got broken into about 18 months ago. They got through the front door and got into the office and took computers and everything. That was way more costly than this."

Milestone for men's group By Brendan Rees For 10 years, it's been home to a group of men who love nothing more than to share a yarn over a cuppa. Established in 2008 as a safe place for men to share stories and build friendships, the OM:NI (Older Men New Ideas) Men's Discussion Group at the Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne celebrated its 10th anniversary on 13 March. "This group attracts men from various professions with the skills and experience to ensure discussions are thought provoking with an interest to all in an informative and private atmosphere," said Manager of the Balla Balla Community Centre Maree Cullinan. The day was celebrated with a birthday cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

cake, with much discussion and laughter. "Some men came back who started 10 years ago, and others who have been involved throughout that time," Ms Cullinan said. "The men in this group support one another, share stories and experiences and in general have lots of fun." There are currently five Men's Discussion Groups in the Casey and Cardinia regions. These are Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Berwick, Beaconsfield, and Pakenham, with another four groups proposed in the region within the next two years. Ms Cullinan said the groups were set up in recognition of the unique issues faced by many men as they approached or entered retirement.

FOCUS ON … MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Every April the L’il Aussie Prems Foundation (LAPF) hosts Wear Green for Premmies Day to raise awareness and funds for the 25,000 premature babies born in Australia each year. The charity provides support and services to families of premature and sick newborns. This year Wear Green for Premmies Day will be on April 13 and local caregivers at St John of God Berwick Hospital will be adding a touch of green to their day in recognition of the premature babies born at their hospital each year. St John of God Berwick Hospital is well equipped to care for babies born from 34 weeks gestation and weighing at least 1700 grams. With its level three special care nursery and six consultant paediatricians working in rotation and on call 24 hours a day, parents can rest assured that their new baby will receive the specialised care they need when their child is born. Premature birth isn’t the only reason a baby might be admitted for specialised care. Breathing difficulties, jaundice, low blood sugar levels or temperature instability could also require the expertise of the hospital’s highly trained medical staff. St John of God Berwick Hospital is a modern maternity unit with spacious, light-filled private rooms promoting calm, peace and well-being for expecting parents. The large ensuite facilities and in-built accommodation for partners, along with a spa bath available during and after delivery, will make giving birth feel more like a luxury hotel experience rather than a standard hospital stay.

St John of God Berwick nursery team leader Tan Donnelly.

With a focus on access to fresh air and outdoor spaces, patients are treated to a balcony area where they can visit with friends and family while enjoying a daily happy hour with beverages and a variety of cakes, pastries, soft

cheeses and biscuits. To find out more about maternity care at St John of God Berwick Hospital, visit www.sjog. org.au/maternity or call 8784 5000 to book a tour.

Hampton Park’s Better Health Family Clinic is a one-stop clinic for all health care needs. The centre is home to experienced GPs and specialist services including onsite pathology and radiology services, respiratory services, physiotherapy, dietitian, psychologist and other services. The clinic is open long hours and all services are bulk billed. Aiming to prevent the onset of disease, Dr Farhana Islam and the Better Health Family Clinic team focus on encouraging patients to maintain healthy lifestyles. “The life expectancy of humans has been steadily increasing over time due to advancements in medical treatments, however many Australians lack of quality of life today,” Dr Islam said. “As a General Practitioner, I have worked many years in rural and urban areas and have come across many inspiring and sad stories. “The hardest thing about seeing these patients is knowing that a lot of these diseases could have easily been prevented through simple lifestyle alterations.” Dr Islam explained that some of the leading causes of death among Australians, including cancer, heart disease and uncontrolled diabetes, are often linked to obesity. “Prostate cancer in men and cervical cancer in females is quite common. But a healthy lifestyle, maintaining healthy weight, doing regular exercise, not smoking and not drinking alcohol can reduce cancer risks significantly,” Dr Islam said. “Do not wait until it is too late. Our trained doctors and specialists at the clinic can provide guidance and information to patients.” Better Health Family Clinic is located at 127 – 129 Somerville Road in Hampton Park. The land affected by the application is 800 Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Clyde North (described as Lot 2 PS730842 on Certificate of Title Vol. 11233 Fol.836). The Amendment proposes to apply appropriate zones to reflect the location of the recently reconstructed floodway, by rezoning the northern part of the land from Urban Growth Zone – Schedule 3 (UGZ3) to Urban Floodway Zone (UFZ), and the southern part of the land from UFZ to UGZ3. Under the UGZ3, the General Residential Zone (GRZ1) is the ‘applied zone’ affecting the subject land.

Cavs' mixed start By Hayley Wildes There's plenty to like about the Casey Cavaliers for the 2018 Big V basketball season. The Division 1 women's side showcased its improvement over the summer with a winning start to its season against Whittlesea, 72-64. Tanarly Hood (17 points, 3 assists) impressed in her first game for the Lady Cavs and sent a message to the rest of the competition that the 2017 Division 1 MVP will be just as dangerous in 2018. A stellar defensive effort in the third quarter saw the Lady Cavs hold the Pacers to just eight points and stamp their authority on the contest. Amanda Hobba was a presence on both ends of the court with 13 points and 6 rebounds. But unfortunately for the State Championship Men, they fell to the McKinnon Cougars in their season opener, 91-84. After a dominant first quarter, in which the Cavs got out to a double-digit lead, the Cougars fought their way back as Dillon Stith dominated (27 points, 15 rebounds). For the Cavs, Brandon Polk (20 points, 9 rebounds) continued where he left off last season and Ben Louis (16 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists) - as he so often does - did it all for Casey. In his first game for the Cavs, Matt Donlan (7 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists) showcased his all-round game but will be looking to improve his shooting (3-15 from the field) as he struggled to find his offensive rhythm. In Youth League 1 men's action, Casey got the win over Camberwell, 84-75, in their first game of the season. Oyiti Amum (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Brendan Head (14 points, 11 rebounds) led the Cavs home down the stretch.

Keysborough will be a side to watch this Division 2 season. Picture: COURTESY OF ANDY BEKIERZ

Ben Louis was dominant, but it wasn't enough as Casey lost to McKinnon in their season opener. 167974 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Casey's Youth League 2 women got their 2018 campaign off to a hot start with a dominant win over Whittlesea, 87-65. They had all the answers for the Pacers, as Tess Young (16 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists), Peta Rhodes (19 points, 5 steals) and Lauren Tuplin (16 points, 3 steals) had terrific outings. Casey's State Championship men play

Knox at 3pm on Sunday at Casey Stadium in their home opener, with the Youth League One Men playing beforehand at 1:30pm. The Division One Women travel to Warrnambool to take on the Mermaids on Saturday night, meanwhile the Youth League Two Women will head to Sherbrooke to play the Suns on Saturday afternoon.

'Slick' Davies takes out the top gong By Nick Creely Champion Heinz Southern Districts all-rounder Michael 'Slick' Davies captured his maiden Wookey Medal last Wednesday evening at the Dandenong Club, as the champion Turf 1 player of the 2017/18 season. The star Cobra; who is one of the most well respected players in the region; enjoyed his finest season in the association, notching up 468 runs at 42.5 and 35 wickets at the incredible average of 10.2. Known for his stump to stump line and skiddy action, Davies was the leading wicket taker across the Turf 1 home and away season, and also played a fine hand with the bat on several occasions. Davies plundered three half centuries and took three five wicket hauls, earning himself 37 votes from the DDCA's umpires, meaning he is the first HSD player to win the prestigious award. In a close second was Buckley Ridges champ Daniel 'DJ' Watson, whose remarkably consistent season saw him finish in a close second. DJ also enjoyed arguably his greatest year down at Park Oval, whacking 746 runs at 62.2; including no score under 20; and taking 17 wickets at 25.4 with his pace bowling. Rounding out the top five is Mordialloc superstar and two time Damien Fleming medallist Ian Daniel, who produced some extraordinary performances throughout the season, including his 171 not out against Dingley and his grand final 6/71 against Springvale South, five time Wookey Medal winner Steven Spoljaric and Hallam opening batsman Leigh Booth, who cracked 565 runs at the top of the order for the Hawks.

Burras on a mission By Nick Creely Keysborough are determined to be hard to play against, and have a hunger that they believe can help get them back into the premiership window. The Burras; who finished second on the Division 2 ladder in 2017; fell flat in its preliminary final against Murrumbeena, and are a side on a mission as the 2018 season draws closer with each day. "We learnt a fair few lessons out of last year's finals series, and we went away from probably what made us a successful side throughout the year; I think the focus (this year) is playing a brand of footy that hopefully sustains through a finals series, but we've got to earn that right," Burras coach Matt Ferguson said. "It's more of a motivator (the loss), rather than a downer for us; we're very hungry and in this competition, you have to be up every week; we won't have September on our mind until we get to a stage where we qualify." The Burras list is shaping up to be one of the strongest in the competition, with some high quality recruits in James Anwyl, Aaron Mcllroy, Matthew Carnelley, Damian Collins and Bailey Wardle the perfect complement to the likes of champions Ryan Goodes, Chris Bryan and Michael Downie, as well as the awaited return of forward Dylan Carlsson. "Anwyl has fitted in like he's been around for a decade, he's an amazing defender, and a good leader which is fantastic; Mcllroy has been super impressive, Damian Collins from Narre will be one of our starting midfielders, and we've had a couple of Under-19's that are looking ready for senior footy," Ferguson said. "And we've got Michael Downie back from injury, and he's our captain, and Dylan Carlsson, who is back after having brain surgery, so they're two quality players to inject back in our side." Players are flocking to Keysborough Reserve this pre-season as the Burras embark on launching an exciting Under 19's, and Ferguson said that the majority are bottom aged, but "extremely exciting". As for the seniors and reserves training group, Ferguson said that the numbers at training have increased, a good problem to have so close to the season. "We've put together a senior training squad, and that is about 35 players, so we're really well placed; we have plenty of players ready to play seniors, and it helps the depth of the club," he said. "There will be some new guys in there, but a lot of the guys last year played a lot of footy together, so there will be some headaches in the coaches' room every week, that's for sure." The Burras kick off their 2018 campaign with a big clash against Mount Waverley at Keysborough Reserve. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

18. WHICH Pakistani cricketer played in the Sheffield Shield for New South Wales in

The way in which Pakenham was comprehensively outplayed in all facets of the West Gippsland Cricket Association's Premier grand final was, on face value, a letdown for the natural observer. But the way Kooweerup performed on the weekend - well that just added yet another telling chapter to the Demon legend Since the 2007/08 season, Kooweerup's first XI has been in eight grand finals, winning six of those - including the weekend's effort. Over the past decade, they've arguably enjoyed more success than any top-flight team of any sport the News covers. And on the weekend, their two biggest stars ensured they'd add to it. It started skipper Mark Cooper, who stood up to be counted with a near flawless ton (101) in his side's 7/275. And it finished with vice-captain Jess Mathers, who took an astonishing 9/49 as he played the lead role in dismissing the Lions for just 126 in their reply. By stumps on day one, not many would have realistically given the Lions a chance to turn the decider around. But not even the most upbeat of Demons fans could have envisaged just how dominant their side would be on Sunday - courtesy of one of the greatest spells of fast bowling seen on the competition's biggest stage. With an ability to still move the ball both ways despite a howling breeze, Mathers struck early and often - bowling 28 overs, including 11 maidens, and conceding no extras. None. Surely his team mates must have sensed he was 'on' from the outset, because they all played their part in his astonishing performance. The pair of catches by Matt Bright, and the two by Mathers off his own bowling, were testament to that - particularly the first wicket of the innings, in which Mathers removed one of the best batsmen in the competition (Chris Smith) with a jaw-dropping one-hander. It wasn't in the cards for Mathers to take all 10 wickets, but he came perilously close - with a number of edges through slip off his bowling late in the game. Though this third chapter of Kooweerup and Pakenham's grand final trilogy wasn't a thrilling finale, it was another reminder that these Demons are going nowhere - that their power on the biggest stage remains as big as it ever has been. In the District division, for Devon Meadows, the 2018 decider just had to be different. There is no doubt the Panthers were determined to make amends for what captain Ash Adams admitted was a choke in last year's grand final. After dominating all season, they fell to Clyde - unable to make inroads with the bat. They were never meant to lose that game, but with that added fire in the belly, they came to play against Carlisle Park over the weekend. The Vikings won the toss and elected to bat in hot conditions at Glover Recreation Reserve on Saturday afternoon. But a devastating opening spell from Matthew Hutchinson (4/41) saw his Panthers gain the ascendancy early. He took the wickets of both Vikings' openers - Ammar Bajwa (0) and David Nutting (4) - and had the visitors reeling at 2/6. Travis Canavan (7) took some pressure off as he faced 44 balls and Jason Hameeteman (39) batted brilliantly in a composed innings before Scott Clark (1/20) struck through to claim the key wicket. Hutchinson's bowling was ruthless, keeping the pressure on with a consistent line and length. The left-armer claimed the wickets of Mark Henry (28) and Heath Straughair (11) to have the Vikings struggling at 8/108.

Adams proved troublesome for the Vikings' middle and lower order batsmen, taking 3/39 in 19 overs. A key tenth-wicket partnership between Tanay Katarey (28) and James Gilbert (5) frustrated the Panthers as they put on a handy 34 runs to see the Vikings post a total of 149. After dismissing the Vikings, the Panthers' batsmen had to endure a tough 15 over period to finish day one. Chasing 150 runs to claim the Premiership, Devon Meadows opener Lucas Carroll (4) was dismissed in the second over of the innings, bowled by Michael Sinclair (2/33). Next to fall was fellow opener Kyle Salerno (10), after being trapped in front of his stumps by Straughair (2/49). Nathan Worstelling (6) also struggled with the fire that the Vikings were sending down the pitch. Day one concluded with the Panthers in an unconvincing position of 3/39 - still needing 111 runs with seven wickets in hand on day two. Day two kicked off with wind wreaking havoc; blowing bails off stumps and hats off heads. Despite the windy conditions, Darren O'Brien (44) and Jason Dodd (28) were composed and worked in tandem to ensure the Panthers' innings got back on track. The Vikings had their chances, but dropped catches will haunt the team as they were unable to take their opportunities in the field. O'Brien and Dodd put on a crucial 60-run partnership before Dodd was caught off the bowling of Katarey (1/7). O'Brien continued on his way, dispatching anything that was in his hitting zone. He was eventually dismissed, caught behind by Nutting off the bowling of Sinclair (2/33). At 5/104, Scott Clark (40) waltzed to the middle and hit a four to get off the mark. It was a sign of things to come. On the next delivery, he struck another four as he immediately stamped his authority on the contest. Devon Meadows headed into the tea break at 5/112, needing just 38 runs to complete redemption. Clark was in no mood to take things slowly as he put on a batting masterclass. The 60th over, 1-6-4-6-.-., saw Clark smash Straughair all over the park and put the result beyond doubt. He hit another three boundaries in the next over, before Brad Miles (10) hit the winning runs with a four. It was party time for Devon Meadows as they claimed the five-wicket victory over Carlisle Park. Hutchinson (4/41) was named Man of the Match for his efforts in setting up the victory with a brutal bowling display on day one. "Hutchy was awesome," Captain Ash Adams said. "He didn't perform too well last year in the grand final and then this year he just brought his game and he's too good for this standard of cricket." Adams was thrilled with his team's effort and was proud to be a part of success at Devon Meadows. "It's huge for the club because of the pressure we had, after obviously choking last year in the final. To get the club up - who've been starved of success - is a really good thing." Adams said. In regards to Clark's match-winning and highly entertaining 40 - which saw him garner runs strictly via boundaries (seven fours and two sixes) - Adams wanted him to be aggressive and get the win as quickly as possible. "It was really good. At tea, I just told him to bat for 10-15 balls and then just get it done so we could hurry up and win." Adams said. He also implored his team to stick together next season as the Panthers move up to the WGCA Premier Division. Thursday, 22 March, 2018

Mordi wins Bloods battle By Nick Creely Stamping itself as one of the great sides of the Dandenong District modern era, Mordialloc and its remarkable resolve once again lifted itself to Turf 1 premiership glory after doing it the hard way against Springvale South. Fans flocked to Cashman Oval in Doveton to watch the finest turf cricket in the region, and they were sure treated to a show, in a grand final that was glittered with spectacular catches, missed opportunities, extreme switches of momentum, and ultimately back to back flags for the Bloodhounds. In stifling heat on Saturday, Bloods skipper Craig Slocombe didn’t hesitate to win the toss and elect to bat, and on a pitch that seemingly resembled a road, openers Liam Hamilton and Nathan King strolled to the pitch on a mission. Hamilton was sturdy in defence early, while the more aggressive King took a liking to Stuart Squires (2/43), lifting him down the ground on several occasions to set the tone. Coming on from the Box Street end, Ian Daniel (6/71) almost immediately found the breakthrough in what proved to be a match winning spell by the superstar, trapping Hamilton (10) LBW, before ending King’s cameo on 46 after crashing through the stumps to bring the score to 2/72 in a terrific period of sustained pressure. In came the ever dangerous Steven Spoljaric (34), who immediately got off the mark with a tidy flick to mid-on for a single, and instantly the feel was that the five time Wookey winner could be in for a big one. Just as the Bloods looked to be swinging the momentum back again, Daniel’s brilliance once again shone, knocking over Dylan Quirk (21) after a gritty 80 ball stay, and then shortly after removing Jack Sketcher (4), courtesy of an absolutely stellar catch by the nimble Dylan Campbell at mid-on. With the two most experienced players in the association; Spoljaric and Slocombe; at the crease; a period of consolidation was required, but yet again, immense pressure from Daniel and quick Chathura Athukorala (1/31) brought about the undoing of the pair. Just as the pair looked to be settling, a brain fade from Spoljaric, in which the champ cut in the air straight to point, ended his innings, and not long after, Slocombe (15) took the bait and 38 STAR NEWS

attempted to lift Daniel over mid-off, only for the ball to be swallowed up by Campbell yet again, and suddenly the score was 6/143. Courtesy of a terrific, fighting 28 to Malinga Bandara, the Bloods scratched their way to 187, leaving the Bloodhounds nine overs to face before stumps. Daniel finished with the figures of 6/71, bowling 34 overs; almost straight; at the Box Street end in a performance reminiscent to his 8/43 taken in last year’s grand final. It was always going to be a case of curtailing Malinga Bandara’s leg spin before stumps, but seamer Tim Ford found the first wicket, trapping Brendan Morris LBW in the fifth over. Desperate to protect Ian Daniel, Peter McDermott was sent out amongst some heated words from the Bloods, and right before stumps, Bandara spun one past the bat of youngster Jakob Woinarski (5), leaving the premiers 2/15 at stumps, and with lots of work to do. Wind and rain took hold on Sunday morning, forcing the play to be delayed by 30 minutes, but the Bloodhounds got off to a strong start in some difficult conditions, with McDermott (34) and Ryan Morris (24) playing with some aggression and swiftly knocking up 43 runs. A brilliant bit of fielding at backward square leg by Andrew Staude brought about the end of Morris at 3/52, and in came Daniel, who despite looking shaky, managed to play with a straight bat and account for spinners Jarryd Straker (1/37) and Bandara (3/72). But on the last ball before the lunch break, Daniel popped a ball to short leg with Bandara getting one to spit off a length, and the Bloods went into raptures, capturing the best player and taking the score to 4/67. Almost instantly after the lunch break, Bandara struck again, with McDermott snicking off to Slocombe at first slip, and at 5/70 the game was swaying towards the men from Alex Nelson. As the Bloodhounds have done for the best part of three years, they took the game on when it looked to be vanquishing, and a 31 run stand between Chathura Athukorala (14) and Damith Mapa Ralage (63); which included a massive six from Athukorala over square leg; left the equation at 87 runs with four wickets left in hand.

And as Bloodhounds skipper Stuart Squires (38 not out) explains after riding a wave of emotion to play another defining hand, his side toasted sweet success after an incredible knock by Mapa Ralage; who played with utter class and dare; saw them run away with a convincing four wicket victory in an incredible show of resolve and skill. “I didn’t quite know how we were going to conjure it up, but that’s our way, we find a way,” he said moments after walking off the ground. “I think the game plan was to enjoy, we didn’t want any pressure; every over, we just said ‘let’s enjoy it’, and it was on them to get the wicket. “It started to turn with Chooka (Athukorala) and Mapa, and they put the pressure on them, and it just allowed me to play my dinky role that I do. “I think him and Chooka taking on Bandara was crucial, and we couldn’t let him bowl 30 overs for 30 runs, we had to take some runs off him and those two did it perfectly. “I’ve won seven for Mordi now, it’s just absolutely amazing; I honestly didn’t think we were going to do it, and during the week I thought they were the better side,” he said. As one of the Bloodhounds’ greatest ever leaders, Squires addressed his future in the DDCA, in a legacy that goes well beyond his raw stats. “I’m going to have a year off next year, I’ve got a baby on the way, so it may be it for me,” an emotional Squires said. “That’s the best thing about Mordi, if someone goes out, someone comes in.” Ian Daniel captured the Damien Fleming Medal as the Turf 1 man of the match, making it his second in a row, as he too builds a legacy as one of the great finals performers.

Demons’ grand final hopes gone By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 7

Skip John Green waits to bowl in front of club supporters at Burden Park.

Narre talent shines NARRE WARREN BOWLS The second last round of the Narre Warrren, Berwick Mazda aggregate triples was held on Wednesday last week with the largest number of teams (18). Winners for the day were Narre Warren's Ralph Devonshire, Colin Groom and Andy Tobler, with Berwick's Kurt Oswald, Cliff Fothergill and Ken Graevner runners-up. Bowlers are reminded that the last of series on 11 April will include the presentation of the Mazda MX5 for the weekend competition. Narre Warren's Division 5 team was at Burden Park for the first day of Sectional finals on Saturday. On a warm and breezy day they were drawn to play Glen Waverley. Narre Warren held a small 10-shot advantage at the break. Starting slowly after that, Narre Warren rallied and finished with a 14-shot win. Mark Groom, Zade Bulmer, Philip Howard and Craig Moore won well 28-17, supported by Jos van Hout, Alan Mark, David Wilkinson and John Green (25-17) and Colin Groom, Keith Mark, Graham Dodd and Geoff Miller (22-18) in a close one. Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer started slowly but rallied to go down 14-23. This win places them in the division's top 4 in the Metropolitan area. Narre Warren 89 defeated Glen Waverley 75. On Sunday, Narre Warren's Division 5 backed up at Mulgrave Country Club for their semi-final against Heathmont. In windy conditions, which weren't ideal, Narre Warren was 14 shots down at the tea break, but in one late end all rinks rallied and scored 11 shots to put themselves back in the game. From there the Narre team held its nerve to score an overall five-shot win. The grand final, at a venue to be decided, will be against western suburbs club, Palm Lake. Narre Warren 82 defeated Heathmont 77.

In just 90 seconds, Melbourne went from grand final-bound to heartbreak. The Dogs booked themselves a grand final spot against Brisbane after the AFLW's leading goalkicker Brooke Lochland wheeled onto her left to sink a classy, match winning goal that put them two points ahead with only seconds to play, 5.3 (33) to 4.7 (31). Now Melbourne will have to rue another costly, wasted opportunity that ends their season in the cruellest of fashion. With the northerly wind at VU Whitten Oval, the Demons were unable to capitalize in those two quarters, and it ultimately cost them the game despite having periods of dominance through Karen Paxman, who played a superb game for the visitors. In a clash that was a genuine struggle, the Demons were down one on the bench for virtually the entire match. Star midfielder Sarah Lampard suffered a knee injury in the first term, but looked to have the wood over the highly fancied Dogs before Lochland kicked the sealer. “(I’m) shattered, extremely disappointed for the group, they put so much work into it," Demons coach Mark Stinear said postmatch. "From our program’s point of view, we’d like to think they’re worthy of another week in this competition. “You’ve got to win games, and we couldn’t do that.” Stinear was full of praise for the Dogs’ ability to keep coming at them, but lamented on some defensive errors by his side late in the game. “(It was) a massive effort (from the opposition), to have that belief that they’d keep attacking and get the games on their terms was huge; if we had our time again, we’d do some things differently, we didn’t have the 21 players contributing across the board,” he said. “With 90 seconds (to go), we started to believe it was realistic, but we didn’t block our defensive fifty well enough and to the Bulldogs’ credit, they took the opportunity when it popped up, they deserved the win.” With the Dees not qualifying for the grand final after again being one of the fancied sides, Stinear said they will work on some key areas that halted them this season. “We created a lot of opportunities throughout the year, and there’s so many little momentum swings, and we have to take our chances in front of goal,” he said.

Skip Geoff Miller signals two more to Narre Warren.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS After being runners-up in the past three grand finals, the Cranbourne ladies went one better this time around to be crowned Division 1 Ladies Pennant champions. Arguably the best team in the competition for many years, this time they have the silverware, or at least the pennant flag, to prove it. What a year it has been for them with only one loss for the year, in Round 6. Most likely their toughest game was last week in the semifinal against Pakenham, when they had a battle on their hands and were looking at an upset loss, but they came back determined to play in another grand final. That previous game set them up determined to win the grand final game against Edithvale. But they knew Edithvale were not going to be a pushover and the game itself was an epic. All three rinks were tied into a battle with little between them until the last end before the lunch break when skip Sue Hudson and her crew picked up five shots

Cranbourne’s proud Pennant winners to give Cranbourne a 10-shot lead. The battle continued after lunch but the determination of the Cranbourne side to take the pennant flag was relentless. In the end it was a win to Cranbourne by 21 shots and the crowd joined in with the team and jumped up and down with excitement. "This has been a long time coming but we

are all very, very happy" said team coach Isobel Partington. The ladies now have a chance next week to play-off against Lalor to become Division 1 Metropolitan Champions and an opportunity to play next year at the highest level in Premier league. Pennant Division 1 grand-final: Cranbourne 72 defeated Edithvale 51. The grand final team was: Isobel Partington, Helen Witherden, Maree Taylor, Sandra Mueller, Joyce Pearce, Sue Hudson, Maureen Cameron, Freda Farrall, Joyce McLisky, Kath Dudink, Shirley Venville and Lynne Wood. Meanwhile, in the Saturday six-a-side competition, after last week's grand final pennant victory skips Scott Di Piazza and Rob Sorensen and their teams played against Whittlesea and won by two shots. They will now play off in the Divisional six-a-side metropolitan championship. Cranbourne 38 defeated Whittlesea 36. Thursday, 22 March, 2018
