Q1 2015 Report 1

Welcome to the quarter one report We kicked off the year with our smoking cessation campaign, run in partnership with the Health Services Executive (HSE). The campaign highlighted our readers’ concerns about ‘social smoking’ as over 30,000 young people read our article on the subject. Knowing this is an issue for our readers will help inform how we approach 2016’s campaign. We also ran our Health Hack: Healthy Living campaign in January to tap into the new year resolutions and appetite amongst our readers to kickstart new healthier lifestyle routines. In Q1, 2015 the team partnered with our good friends at Twitter to launch our Online Safety Hub, a set of easy guides to safety, security and privacy online. Held at Twitter’s EMEA HQ, the event was hosted by Dave Cronin from Beat102103 and featured contributions from Minister of State Aodhan O’Rioirdain and YouTuber Melanie Murphy. The hub can be accessed at SpunOut.ie/OnlineSafety - take a look! ‘Til next month, all the best, Ian Power, Executive Director.

ďƒ¤ How we did in Quarter 1 3

Our visitors in quarter one A really solid quarter with a huge growth spurt. This is the first time we have reached over 300,000 visits in a quarter (outside 2013) and we can largely thank a winning combination of great content from editorial along with great promotion on our social media channels. We are on track for a truly special 2015, with record traffic like this we could hit 1,000,000 by November.

All data compared against Q1 2014. A change in our definition of bounce has lead to counting visits which engage with the content more as not being bounce traffic which is more useful to us than only considering visitors who visit more than one page. Expect this to show a fall in bounce throughout 2015. Pages per visit will track usage of website with more than one page being consumed with bounce being reflective of countent with less engagement.

Social media in quarter one The first quarter in 2014 was the best ever for SpunOut.ie’s social media channels, with an impressive high of 112,406 sessions entering the website via Facebook and Twitter. This number was up 491% from the first three months in 2014, so it is clear that real progress is being made in reaching more and more young people by effective use of social media as a traffic acquisition tool.

Editorial in quarter one Q1 saw 2015’s editorial calendar kick into gear with the development of some really exciting new areas. With the Online Safety Hub, we created content that meets a core need for our demographic with an exciting and innovative resource. We greatly expanded the quantity and quality of our quit smoking content. We also saw an amazing volume of opinion pieces from contributors coming through, ensuring SpunOut’s editorial content remains by young people, for young people.

Our staff in quarter one This month saw our staff writer Sarah Doran leave us for new exciting adventures across the pond in London where Sarah is now writing for the team at ‘Radio Times’. Marie Rowland who joined us on a three month contract left in February and has since gone travelling around Europe. We hope to get to work with these two fabulous writers again in the future. Our two in-house volunteers this quarter were Keyla and Andy. Andy helped us out with the Online Safety Hub launch and Keyla was over from Boston on a study exchange and work programme and supported the efforts of our awesome editorial team while she was here. Best of luck to our four awesome former colleagues.

Online Safety Hub

The online safety hub was developed as a one stop shop for the vast amount of online safety content on SpunOut.ie. The project involved developing all new content as well as revamping some of our existing content. A new landing page was developed to host all the content and provide a cleaner, more engaging manner of discovering content. The project was launched in the Twitter European headquarters on February 2nd and was atttended by Minister Aodhán Ó Ríordáin TD.
