Advocacy & Assistance to frail seniors living in the community – Advocacy, assistance, information and referrals for Seniors who are 60 years of age or older. Elder Protective Services – For persons 60 years old and older who may experience abuse, neglect, exploitation, or isolation. Home and Community Based Services Waiver (HCBSW) For the frail elderly provides nonmedical services to older persons to help them maintain independence in their own homes as an alternative to nursing home placement. HCBSW services can include the following services: • • • •

Homemaker Program – Homemaker services to qualifed individuals who are age 60 and older or disabled. Services may include general housekeeping, limited meal preparation, shopping, laundry, and errands. Long-Term Care Ombudsman – Address issues and problems faced by residents in long-term care facilities, which include residential facilities for groups and skilled nursing facilities. Personal Care Assistance Services (PAS) This program provides community based, in home services to enable adults with severe physical disabilities to remain in their own homes.
State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Certified counselors provide unbiased information to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers about Medicare and related health benefits. Senior Medicare Patrol (Nevada SMP) This program educates Medicare and beneficiaries, their families and caregivers on how to: protect themselves from medical identity theft, detect errors, fraud and abuse, and report suspicious billing practices. Taxi Assistance Program (TAP) Program provides discounted taxicab fares to seniors and persons with disabilities based on income eligibility guidelines.

The Nevada Veterans Foundation was formed in 2011, a Nevada State Chartered Non Profit [501 (c) (3)] #45-3363846 Organization. The purpose of the Nevada Veterans Foundation is to raise the necessary funds to build a Veteran's Family Guest house on the campus of the Southern Nevada VA Medical Center in North Las Vegas for current and former military personnel and their Families. The Fisher House Foundation will assist the NVF by matching the funds raised locally thus providing a cost free 16 suite Fisher House with common areas for Military and Veteran’s families traveling more than 50 miles to be with their loved ones receiving treatment at the Southern Nevada Military and Veterans healthcare facilities. Their goal is to raise $3 million for the construction of the Southern Nevada Fisher house and an additional $300,000 for a Meditation Garden Pathway, Children’s Play Area and RV/Travel Trailer Sites.

LIVING WILL LOCKBOX: Secretary of State Underscores Value of Securing Important Healthcare Wishes Now Secretary of State Ross Miller encourages Nevadans to take steps now to secure their healthcare wishes rather than leaving such personal decisions up to others in a time of crisis. Individuals can take a few easy steps now to determine their advance health care directives such as living wills, and file those documents with Nevada’s no-cost Living Will Lockbox. The Living Will Lockbox is the best way to securely store advance health care directives while still having those important documents readily available to family members and health care providers at times of crisis. Since its launch more than five years ago, the program has proven to be sustainable, secure and easy to use. “We all deserve to have our end-of-life wishes respected,” said Secretary Miller. “With advanced care planning like living wills, health care providers can focus on a level of care based on the patient’s expressed wishes.” Many healthcare and legal professionals understand and appreciate the value of the Living Will Lockbox and can help answer questions about the program. The Secretary of State’s office works closely with elder law attorneys, estate planners, Nevada AARP, the Washoe County Senior Citizen Law Project, and the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program to ensure the general public can access information about the value of the service. Use of the Living Will Lockbox is free to all Nevadans, and registering, either as an individual or as an authorized healthcare provider, is very simple. Senior Bathroom Safety In a country where the senior statistic welcomes 10,000 new members a day, the topic of safety is of paramount concern in almost all day-to-day decisions. Although there are many options for seniors when it comes to living arrangements, not much compares with being able to stay in your own home. This is referred to as “aging in place”. When new parents have a newborn, the first thing the caring parents do is “Baby Proof” their house to protect their newest addition. Families of seniors or seniors themselves, rarely think to “Senior Proof” their homes. One out of every three seniors fall every year, so safety and ease of use are paramount. By far, the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house. Most seniors have difficulty or can’t get in and out of a bath tub. This creates an incredibly risky situation for falling, all of which can be prevented. The first improvement seniors should make to their home is either a walk in bath tub or a walk in shower. How to Select an Assisted Living Home/Center The following is a consumer checklist of important services, amenities and accommodations in assisted living communities. Every community is unique. We recommend making several visits, at various times of day, to each residence you are considering.
Consider the following as you assess an assisted living residence: Atmosphere As you arrive at the residence, do you like its location and outward appearance? Did you receive a warm greeting from staff welcoming you to the residence? Does the administrator/staff call residents by name and interact warmly with them as you tour the residence?
Are elevators available for those unable to use stairways? Are hand rails available to aid in walking? Is the residence clean, free of odors and appropriately heated/cooled?
Do residents socialize with each other and appear happy and comfortable?
Does the residence meet local and/or state licensing requirements?
Are you able to talk with residents about how they like the residence and staff?
Does the residence have a means of security if a resident wanders?
Do the residents seem to be appropriate housemates for you or your loved one? Are staff appropriately dressed, personable and outgoing? Do the staff members treat each other in a professional manner?
Needs Assessments, Contracts, Costs & Finances Is a contractual agreement available that discloses healthcare and supportive services, all fees, as well as admission and discharge provisions?
Are the staff members that you pass during your tour friendly to you?
Does this process include the resident, their family and facility staff along with the potential resident’s physician.
Are visits with the resident welcome at any time?
When may a contract be terminated and what are refund policies?
Physical Features Is the community well-designed for resident’s needs? Is the floor plan easy to follow?

Are doorways, hallways and rooms accommodating to wheelchairs and walkers?

Is there a procedure to pay for additional services like nursing care when the services are needed on a temporary basis? Are there different costs for various levels or categories of services? Are residents required to purchase renters’ insurance for personal property in their units? Is staff available to meet scheduled and unscheduled needs? When may a contract be terminated? What are the policies for refunds and transfers? Is there an appeals process for dissatisfied residents?
Medication & Health Care Does the residence have specific policies regarding storage of medication, assistance with medications, training and supervision of staff and record keeping? Is self-administration of medication allowed? Are staff available to assist residents who experience memory, orientation, of judgment losses? To what extent are medical services available, and how are these services provided?
Can residents arrange for transportation on fairly short notice?
Individual Unit Features Do dining room menus vary from day to day and meal to meal? Are different sized and types of units available? Are units for single and double occupancy available? Do all units have a telephone and cable TV and how is billing handled? Is a kitchen area/unit provided with a refrigerator, sink and cooking element?
Social & Recreational Activities Is there evidence of an organized activities program, such as a posted daily schedule, events in progress, reading materials, visitors, etc.? Are residents’ pets allowed in the residence? Who is responsible for their care? Does the residence have its own pets?
Food Service Does the residence provide three nutritionally balanced meals a day, seven days a week? Are snacks available? May a resident request special foods? Are common dining areas available? May residents eat meals in their units? May meals be provided at a time a resident would like or are there set times for meals?
Services Can the residence provide a list of services available? Does the residence provide housekeeping services in residents’ units? Does the residence provide transportation to doctors’ offices, the hairdresser, shopping and other activities desired by residents?
