Living With Parkinson’s Disease At Oakey Assisted Living Community, we care about the needs of your loved ones. We are focused on providing Senior Living at Ease. Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive and chronic disease that affects the body’s movement causing tremors, slow movement, balance difficulties and rigid muscles. It is estimated that seven to ten million people around the world live with Parkinson’s disease, which disrupts the production of dopamine by the brain. The neurons are firing without normal control due to this loss, and when the dopamine levels get too low, it is difficult for them to accomplish goals and control their movements.
There Are Five Stages of Parkinson’s: 1. Mild symptoms that only affect one side of the body. 2. Symptoms that affect both sides changing the gait and posture. 3. Slow movements along with impairment to balance, however functioning independently is still possible. 4. Severe and debilitating to the extent that the person can’t live on their own. They experience muscles that are rigid and walking is very limited. 5. Wheelchair bound or bedridden and needs constant care as they can not move without assistance.

We also help them to better project their voices so they can be understood. In addition, Oakey Assisted Living also offers monthly educational meetings and a monthly support group.

Can Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment help with pain management? Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, or DOs, are trained to use their hands to diagnose illness and injury and correct any issues in your joints, fascia, nerves, muscles and bones. This is known as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). As part of their education, DOs receive special training in the musculoskeletal system, your body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones. DOs often use OMT to relieve pain. Research shows that people with low back pain or migraines who receive OMT needed less medicine, had fewer migraine days, and felt less pain than those who took medication but didn’t receive OMT. OMT can also treat other conditions, such as: asthma, sinus disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome and knee pain. Depending on your case, your DO may also prescribe medication or other treatment options.

Advocacy & Assistance to frail seniors living in the community – Advocacy, assistance, information and referrals for Seniors who are 60 years of age or older. Elder Protective Services – For persons 60 years old and older who may experience abuse, neglect, exploitation, or isolation. Home and Community Based Services Waiver (HCBSW) For the frail elderly provides nonmedical services to older persons to help them maintain independence in their own homes as an alternative to nursing home placement. LIVING WILL LOCKBOX: Secretary of State Underscores Value of Securing Important Healthcare Wishes Now Secretary of State Ross Miller encourages Nevadans to take steps now to secure their healthcare wishes rather than leaving such personal decisions up to others in a time of crisis. Individuals can take a few easy steps now to determine their advance health care directives such as living wills, and file those documents with Nevada’s no-cost Living Will Lockbox. The Living Will Lockbox is the best way to securely store advance health care directives while still having those important documents readily available to family members and health care providers at times of crisis. Since its launch more than five years ago, the program has proven to be sustainable, secure and easy to use. “We all deserve to have our end-of-life wishes respected,” said Secretary Miller. “With advanced care planning like living wills, health care providers can focus on a level of care based on the patient’s expressed wishes.” Many healthcare and legal professionals understand and appreciate the value of the Living Will Lockbox and can help answer questions about the program. The Secretary of State’s office works closely with elder law attorneys, estate planners, Nevada AARP, the Washoe County Senior Citizen Law Project, and the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program to ensure the general public can access information about the value of the service. Use of the Living Will Lockbox is free to all Nevadans, and registering, either as an individual or as an authorized healthcare provider, is very simple. How to Select an Assisted Living Home/Center The following is a consumer checklist of important services, amenities and accommodations in assisted living communities. Every community is unique. We recommend making several visits, at various times of day, to each residence you are considering.
Consider the following as you assess an assisted living residence: Atmosphere As you arrive at the residence, do you like its location and outward appearance? Did you receive a warm greeting from staff welcoming you to the residence? Does the administrator/staff call residents by name and interact warmly with them as you tour the residence?
Are doorways, hallways and rooms accommodating to wheelchairs and walkers? Are elevators available for those unable to use stairways? Are hand rails available to aid in walking? Is the residence clean, free of odors and appropriately heated/cooled?
Do residents socialize with each other and appear happy and comfortable?
Does the residence meet local and/or state licensing requirements?
Are you able to talk with residents about how they like the residence and staff?
Does the residence have a means of security if a resident wanders?
Do the residents seem to be appropriate housemates for you or your loved one? Are staff appropriately dressed, personable and outgoing? Do the staff members treat each other in a professional manner?
Needs Assessments, Contracts, Costs & Finances Is a contractual agreement available that discloses healthcare and supportive services, all fees, as well as admission and discharge provisions?
Are the staff members that you pass during your tour friendly to you?
Does this process include the resident, their family and facility staff along with the potential resident’s physician.
Are visits with the resident welcome at any time?
When may a contract be terminated and what are refund policies?
Physical Features Is the community well-designed for resident’s needs? Is the floor plan easy to follow?

Can residents arrange for transportation on fairly short notice?
Individual Unit Features Do dining room menus vary from day to day and meal to meal? Are different sized and types of units available? Are units for single and double occupancy available? Do all units have a telephone and cable TV and how is billing handled? Is a kitchen area/unit provided with a refrigerator, sink and cooking element?
Social & Recreational Activities Is there evidence of an organized activities program, such as a posted daily schedule, events in progress, reading materials, visitors, etc.? Are residents’ pets allowed in the residence? Who is responsible for their care? Does the residence have its own pets?
Food Service Does the residence provide three nutritionally balanced meals a day, seven days a week? Are snacks available? May a resident request special foods? Are common dining areas available? May residents eat meals in their units? May meals be provided at a time a resident would like or are there set times for meals?
Services Can the residence provide a list of services available? Does the residence provide housekeeping services in residents’ units? Does the residence provide transportation to doctors’ offices, the hairdresser, shopping and other activities desired by residents?

Are you a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer's or dementia? Do you feel overwhelmed? Caregivers for Alzheimer's and Dementia Face special challenges and frequently report experiencing high levels of stress. You may be putting your own health at risk. Experiencing some stress is part of everyday life. However, when symptoms of stress persist, they can be harmful. The following Caregiver Stress Test from The Alzheimer's Association may help you identify how stress is affecting your life.
Do you regularly... 1. Feel like you have to do it all yourself and that you should be doing more? 2. Withdraw from family, friends and activities that you used to enjoy? 3. Worry about the safety of the person you care for? 4. Feel anxious about money and health care decisions? 5. Deny the impact of the disease and its effects on your family? 6. Feel grief or sadness that your relationship with the person isn't what it used to be? 7. Get frustrated and angry when the person with dementia continually repeats things and doesn't seem to listen? 8. Have health problems that are taking a toll on you?
If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, you are not alone! 154

The entrance to the walkway leading to the plaza, will be flanked by two fu dogs. The walkway lined with soldier palms, will lead to the Garden of Eternity Plaza. This feature will offer a place for ceremonies and will have ceremonial features added to enhance its use.
Memorials in the garden will consist of both upright and flat memorial options. Private and semi-private interment options are also available.
Garden of Eternity has been surveyed by local Feng Shui Master Lin Huang, trained at the Taoist Temple in Taiwan, so that it meets the laws of Feng Shui.
— Annual Events — In celebration of traditional Asian customs, the Chinese New Year and Ching Ming, and other special days of observance will be held at the Garden of Eternity.
Fu dogs known for offering a symbolic protection to a property, will be placed at the leading walkway of the Garden.
The garden is positioned in the South Eastern area of the cemetery and will overlook Legacy Lake and have a clear view of the Las Vegas mountain range to the Northwest. This arrangement will best benefit from the Yin manifestations of quiet, darkness, moonlight, and stillness—resulting in a positive response from visiting friends and loved ones, who experience the compatible aura.
