Tirol – an innovative offspring of a successful republic As the saying goes, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. The success of Tirol as a business and technology location is the well-earned fruit of a hard-working population, industrious companies, innov ative research and circumspect regional policies. Additionally, your comp any in Tirol also naturally profits from the achievements of Austria, of which Tirol is a part. Austria’s economic performance is well r espected internationally. The EU member can point to highly dynamic net foreign investment; has enjoyed the highest growth in productivity in Europe for decades; is one of the most company-friendly states in Europe following an attractive tax reform, and is among the leaders in the European Union for achieving growth and employment targets. Nor does Austria lag behind in research. In 2006 it already ranked fourth in the EU 27 for R&D intensity.

Never far away – Tirol is your location in the heart of the Alps Tirol is not called “the heart of the Alps” for nothing: its more than 700.000 inhabitants and over 30.000 companies are situated at the heart of the major economic centres of central Europe. Munich is one hour’s drive away, Zurich can be reached in two hours, Stuttgart in three hours, Milan and Vienna in four hours. These desti nations and many other cities can also be reached by plane. A propos flying: Innsbruck Airport received the “Airport Achievement Award” in 2006/07. The award, which is one of the most coveted awards in the European aviation sector, was conferred on Innsbruck Airport for e xceptional and partially pioneering services in flight safety.

Innsbruck not only constitutes the hub of Tirol geographically. Apart from the most important education and research centres in the region, the largest industrial companies in Tirol are located here as well as in the Unterinntal. A regional thematic focus (mechatronics in Eastern Tirol, materials and micro technology in Außerfern, IT and tourist-focused services in Landeck etc.) also makes the other districts in the region, such as Außerfern (Reutte), the Tirolean uplands (Imst, Landeck), the Tirolean lowlands (Schwaz, Kufstein, Kitzbühel) and Eastern Tirol (Lienz), particularly attractive for com panies.

The Tirolean workforce – qualified and motivated Tirol has one of the highest levels of education in Europe. In addition to compulsory state education, Tirol offers ten colleges or institutes of higher technical education, two universities of applied sciences and three universities. The dual education scheme for apprentices provides the ideal combination of theory and practice. Tirol embraces “life-long learning”. Your workforce will be keen to undergo further training and adapt to altering circumstances. The unrivalled quality of life that makes Tirol the most popular tourist and holiday destination in Austria is just one reason for the high motivation d isplayed by the Tirolean inhabitants. This can be seen not only in the above-average labour productivity ratios and the lowest number of strike hours (measured in seconds in Tirol), but also in the inhabitants’ strong identifi cation with “their” company. In addition to the qualified and motivated workforce a vailable, Tirol is not a highprice region in regard to non-wage labour costs. The tax burden for your company in Tirol occasioned by employee wages is around 38.5 % (Diagram 5), internationally mid-table.

Tirol – research, the foundation of your company’s success Tirol’s universities and non-university r esearch facilities ensure r esearch of international top quality. Despite the small size of Tirol – in comparison with other top research locations in Europe – the region not only has universities and universities of applied sciences, but also a whole host of research centres. Their work can also benefit your company. The focus of research activities is on life sciences (with biotechnology, medical t echnology, medical computer s cience etc.), physics or quantum physics, nanotechnology, new materials, renewable energies, information technologies and Alpine technologies or Alpine environment and tourism.

12  //

The total outlay for research and development in Tirol more than doubled during the period 1998 - 2006. Compared to population density, Tirol has the most scientific publications in high impact journals in Austria. The scientific facilities display an exem plary receptiveness towards the economy. Competence and transfer centres support applied research and coordinate joint projects between the research institutes and companies as clients.

Tirol – networked and marketed innovation All for one and one for all – no figure of speech in the Tirolean innovation culture. While researching and implementing results into marketable products, universities, research institutes and companies rely on the strength of cooperation. Ten competence centres cooperate with the Tirolean scientific institutes to generate applied r esearch in future-orientated branches. If required, business incubators and transfer facilities link the needs of your companies to the knowledge of the universities and support the transfer of results into the r elevant markets. Ten branch networks, among them five clusters, further link companies with research and educational institutes. The clusters constitute innovation networks. They offer platforms to drive the Tirolean economy, advance the exchange of experience, support the development of innovation and competitive advantages in member companies and encourage the marketing and internationalisation process. The Tirolean Economic Chamber is the representative of the business community. www.wko.at/tirol

Tirol – have your research funded! Research and innovation are the pillars of a successful business location. This is why Tirol provides ample funds for research and development. All Tirolean companies enjoy a tailor-made research funding programme that ensures the broad-based financing of innovation and new developments. A multitude of national funding instruments gives additional support or raises the funding volume correspondingly. Additionally, companies profit from Europe’s most attractive tax s ystem in research & development (R&D). Costs for research attract research exemption and/or a research bonus. Around 557 million euros were invested in research and development in Tirol in 2006. Almost 50 % of that figure was R&D investment u ndertaken by companies and the trend is tending upwards.

Tirol – an exceptional and unique meeting place You are going to get used to it. If your company is located in Tirol, you will be a popular host for your business associates from all over the world. Tirol is also a top destination for premium events. Modern congress centres – the Congress Innsbruck came in second in the Apex Award for “Best Congress Centre of the World” in 2005 – e xceptional event locations, high quality conference and seminar hotels, universities as partner for scientific con ferences, or professional agencies for incentives - the variety ensures that there is something for everybody. Depending on the participant profile, the peripheral programme can be geared towards sports, adventures for mind and body, cultural or health and wellness events. It always remains unique – as the natural backdrop of the Alps provides the breath-taking scenery for many activities.

18  //

An impressive example for Tirol´s success as a congress location is also the “European Forum Alpbach”, which has been staged in the mountain village of Alpbach since 1945. Every August, Alpbach becomes the “Village of Thinkers”. Lecturers and participants from over 50 states, representing the fields of science, business and politics, as well as students come together in Alpbach to discuss topical questions and to find interdisciplinary ways of solving them. Tirol – excellent quality of life

20  //

The choice of location is principally characterised by the framework conditions offered to businesses. However, an important “soft skill” is an exceedingly pleasant living environment – and this translates into motivated employees. Tirol offers its inhabitants not only all the amenities that a modern business location requires, but also an unrivalled quality of life: clean mountain air, pure lakes and drinking water directly from the mountains are just a few examples of the intact nature to be found. The mountain scenery is not only visually stunning, the mountains also offer deve loped ski resorts, options for skiing and trekking tours, a paradise for walking, golfing, mountain biking and climbing as well as bathing in picturesque lakes. Anybody interested in culture will quickly come across a discerning range of theatres and museums. The Tirolean regional theatre has staged traditional as well as contemporary performances, operas, operettas, musicals, symphony orchestra concerts, plays and dance theatre since 1629. It was nominated for the “German-speaking Opera House of the Year” in 2006. Additionally, the proximity to Italy en courages people to take the occasional Mediterranean mini-break.

Sports – 20.000 kilometres of walking paths – 7.000 kilometres of cycle trails – 4.000 kilometres of cycle paths – 3.500 kilometres of long-distance skiing tracks – 5.000 kilometres of cross-country ski trails – 400 kilometres of running and Nordic walking trails – 19 golf courses
