EDITOR’S LETTER
We welcome you to the 7th edition of SOSB magazine. St Barths has been changing at a fast pace, the calm and serenity that once was is slowly becoming luxury. For those who pay enough attention, we notice that the roadsides are speckled with litter, cigarette butts are scattered around the white sand beaches and everyone seems to be in a great hurry. Nevertheless, the magic of the island is far from lost, we simply offer you a friendly reminder to slow down, respect your surroundings and the people around you. We are pleased to have inspired many of you to focus a little more on the history of St Barths and its simpler aesthetics. This island is a unique place that constantly inspires us to create content curated directly from its authenticity and its abundant splendor. In the continuity of inspiration, we aim to encourage our readers to spend some time getting in touch with the islands inner depths. It is a community effort to preserve the Spirit of St Barths and to each of its participants, we thank you. In this issue we will take a glimpse at the personal relationship of the cove of Colombier and its former residents. We will touch on topics true to the islands past and present. A
self-taught interior designer, Elisa Bally innately knows how to interpret the spirit of a space – going straiaht to its essence. After her success with the Clarins Spa at Le Guanahani, which she worked on in collaboration with
architect Philippe Stouvenot, Ms. Bally has been entrusted with several other projects in St. Barths, New York City, and St. Tropez. She keeps both the scale of the island, and the depth and dimensions of a building ’s architecture top of mind when adorning its insides. She firmly believes that in St. Barth’s, aesthetics must go hand-on-hand with common sense and ethics – this is how to create a space with soul. To illustrate her point, we met her at one of her past projects, Villa Bali in PointeMilou, originally built by architect Philippe Stouvenot and later renovated in 2017 by LOTUS architects Studio. The new owners had two main priorities: to have rooms to accommodate family and friends, and to enjoy as much outdoor living as possible. Les espaces suivent le rythme des lumières, de l’ombre des persiennes changeant tout au fil de la journée, créant aussi une ventilation naturelle dans le salon, qui régule la température sans nécessité d’air conditionné. Une transition douce du salon à la terrasse en bois d’ipé génère la fluidité. Quant au vert des coussins il est le lien avec l’extérieur. Le mobilier nomade tout à fait approprié ajoute du caractère sans brider l’espace. Au mur des fresques pittoresques et une planche de surf de l’artiste Tomek Sarduski apporte une touche particulière à cette atmosphère sereine. En fin de journée, les îlots environnants se détachent tels des estampes japonaises dans le soleil couchant. L’océan face à la piscine déroule son tapis bleu jusqu’à l’horizon. Une vue à couper le souffle. Nous sommes assis avec Elisa Bally afin de lui poser quelques questions sur l’île et connaitre son point sur la décoration.

At the far corner of Anse de Colombier lies a ghost. A shadow of its former, lively self. It tells stories of wealth and notoriety, celebration and family. This home that once belonged to David and Peggy Rockefeller has withered in structure, but not in significance. At that time the island was fresh and under-theradar, in fact it was on barely anyone’s radar at all. Here, the Rockefellers made a holiday home on one of the most secluded beaches on the island. It was their escape, their haven from a world that followed them closely – a place where they could live in anonymity. And it really is no surprise that they chose to settle in this particular area, for anyone who’s been to Colombier knows the quiet solitude, the overcoming sense of calm that it provides. The home itself, built by architect Nelson W. Aldrich, takes its lead from the island’s terrain. The Rockefellers’ deep respect for St. Barth is evident in the way the house was designed: the use of natural materials creates a sense of peace within its environment, as it is in perfect harmony with the landscape. More than just a house, they made this place a home. Mrs. Rockefeller even had a garden where she grew fresh vegetables and also kept cows, chickens, turkeys, quail, pheasants, pigeons and peacocks. The kitchen became quite a self-sufficient, hands-on operation. With countless guests and gatherings, the house became a hub for Caribbean living at its best. And maybe this is one of the starting points for the deep fondness and affection St. Barth garners from so many. This magical place takes us back to a day before the island’s fame set in, when it was a far different place, but clearly no less loved.

Tout au nord-ouest de l’île, à l’anse Colombier se tient un fantôme. Une ombre du passé. Elle raconte une histoire de fortune, de notoriété, de famille. La propriété appartenait à David et Peggy Rockefeller, bien qu’aujourd’hui tombée en désuétude elle n’en est pas moins la mémoire d’une époque. En ce temps l’île était inconnue, loin des radars, loin des hit-parades de la popularité, d’ailleurs elle n’était pas encore détectée par les radars. C’est ici que les Rockfeller établirent leur maison de vacances sur cette anse, la plus isolée de l’île. C’était leur échappatoire, leur havre de paix, loin des feux de la rampe, loin du monde. L’endroit qui leur offrait l’anonymat. Il n’est pas surprenant qu’ils aient choisi particulièrement cet emplacement, lorsque l’on a connu le calme et la tranquillité qui émanait de l’anse Colombier. La maison construite par l’architecte Nelson W. Aldrich se fond dans le décors en parfaite harmonie avec la géographie du terrain. Le profond respect de la famille Rockefeller pour Saint-Barthélemy est évident et se retrouve dans le choix de l’architecture, le choix des matériaux qui s’intègrent parfaitement avec la nature. Plus que leur maison ils en firent leur foyer. Madame Rockefeller créa un grand jardin où était cultivé des arbres fruitiers, des légumes où on élevait des vaches, des poules, des cailles, des oies, des faisans, des paons. Grace aux efforts fournis tous les besoins alimentaires devinrent auto suffisants. Avec une multitude d’invités, de réunions, la propriété devint la plaque tournante de l’art du bien vivre dans la caraïbe. L’engouement pour l’île de Saint Barth venait de naître et il est toujours partagé aujourd’hui. Cet endroit magique nous ramène avant la gloire actuelle de l’île, quand elle était bien différente mais clairement très aimée.

es cabris’ arrived by boat hundreds of years ago with the first french settlers. At the time, they were primarily used for food as they were one of the only sources of meat available. Nowadays, the consumption of goat meat is restricted to local family usage, but you can still find typical creole dishes in a few restaurants around the island that use g oat meat from abroad. Due to hurricanes, many pens have been bent out of shape over the years, leaving family livestocks to escape into the mountains. These wild goats multiplied quickly and have largely contributed to the reduction of plant biodiversity by non-renewal of generations of plant species. Their impact on the island is not only limited to the vegetation, the reefs and aquatic bio diversity are also effected. The weakening of the soils and increased erosion give way to the risk of landslides into the ocean and in consequence has a negative impact on the surrounding corals. The estimated number of wild goats is now somewhere between three to five thousand. Thanks to the Territorial Agency for the Environment and the INE, solutions are gradually put into place to help regulate the densification of wild goats per area.

es chèvres locales, appellées “cabris” sont arrivées il y a quelques siècles avec les premiers colons. La plupart des familles St-Barth ont toujours eu un ou deux cabris qui furent, pendant longtemps, une des rares sources de viande rouge disponibles. Aujourd’hui, la viande de cabri local est uniquement destinée à une consommation privée et les quelques restaurants qui le proposent au menu utilisent une viande importée. Au fil du temps, les cabris qui se sont progressivement échappés de leurs enclots ont colonisé nos mornes. N’ayant aucun prédateur, ils se sont multipliés de manière incontrôlable pour devenir, à certains endroits, une source de nuisance pour la flore de l’île. Nous pouvons aussi mentionner un impact négatif sur les écosystèmes marins car l’érosion des sols (privée de plantes et de leurs racines qui retiennent la terre) s’est accélérée et la terre s’est progressivement déversée dans la mer, asphyxiant peu à peu les coraux et organismes marins fragiles. Actuellement, la population de cabris sauvages est estimée entre 3000 et 5000 individus. Grâce aux actions conjuguées de l’A.T.E (Agence Territoriale de l’Environnement) et l’I.N.E (Island Nature St Barth Experience) des solutions sont progressivement mises en place afin de réguler et contrôler la densification de cette population sauvage.
