DON’T SUFFER BRAIN FOG IN WINTER DRIVING Brian Byrne urges motorists to take account of weather conditions, check your vehicle and take all necessary precautions MOST of you are now probably driving cars with a range of driver assist systems designed to keep you safer on the road. Over the last five years, they’ve filtered down from the high-end cars to the most humble supermini. But that doesn’t mean you should be bowling along without thinking, in the foggy notion that you don’t need to be as careful any more. The well-known ‘cocoon effect’ can lull many motorists into false sense of safety security. And on the matter of fog, we’ve already had some. Are you one of the crazies who doesn’t consider it appropriate to slow down when visibility is less than good? Rule of thumb, cut a minimum of 20mph off your normal highway driving speed. Even if you can see the car ahead clearly, you can’t see what’s happening further on, and if there’s an incident, then you get much less warning than usual of a sudden stop. Use your fog lights. But only in fog. Again, there are platoons of people out there who believe their front fogs are extra driving lights. They’re not, their light scatter is designed differently and when used in ordinary conditions they dazzle oncoming drivers. The rear fog light is most important, as ordinary rear lights don’t have enough illumination in foggy conditions, and the fog light gives around the same light as brake lights. Again, don’t leave it on when the fog is gone, as they seriously dazzle drivers travelling behind. Don’t depend on the fog lights alone, use your dipped headlights too, even if your modern car has daylight running lights. It’s as important to be seen as see. Run your windscreen wiper regularly. Fog deposits on your windscreen, not as noticeably as rain but cutting already scarce vision distance as well as making oncoming lights look very smeary and dazzling. Keep your distance. Again, avoidance or stopping manoeuvres happen much more suddenly in fog, so leave yourself that extra cushion of space to react in time before a possible crunch. Also keep an eye on the driver behind you. If he or she are tailgating you, tap the brakes a couple of time to encourage them to pull back. You might be doing things right, but you don’t want to be rear-ended by a dope who isn’t. In wet conditions, also double the distance you’d normally leave between your car and the one in front. When passing pedestrians, cyclists, or other cars, give them a wider space than

normal, as they might themselves hit a slippery patch and swerve into your path. With the early dark evenings and darker mornings, there are more pedestrian adults and children, and cyclists too, using roads and footpaths that may not be properly lit. Be aware that not everybody wears reflective gear (though they should). Overtaking in the dark isn’t as simple as seeing that there’s no oncoming traffic. Distances are deceptive, so don’t leave it to ‘I’ll chance it’. Be sure of where you’re going and what space is available to do what you need to do safely. Watch out for floods. Too many drivers figure they can drive through standing water, but depending on where the air intake is for your engine, you can wreck it in just half a foot of water. And do consider people on the footpath as you drive through the puddle beside them. In conclusion, be sensible. Make yourself aware of the greater risks in winter driving, and keep aware of them. It’s what good drivers do. It’s why they get safely through the winter without harming themselves, or others.

CHECKS TO MAKE ON YOUR CAR BEFORE winter fully sets in, of course, you should have run a visual check on all your lights, making sure bulbs don’t need to be replaced. Consider having an alignment check too, to make sure they’re both legal and giving you the best vision possible. Never drive with one working headlight. Somebody else in the dark might mistake you for a motorbike and find out the hard way, for them and you, that there’s heavy metal where they didn’t figure it to be. Check brake pads, tyre pressure and tyre tread depth. The road is now more likely to be wet, and also have a lot of slippery wet leaves around. Check your screen wipers, and replace them if they’re showing signs of wear, or leaving streaks on the windscreen. Replacement should ideally be annual, and at this time of the year they’ll likely be scored from dealing with dusty windscreens through the summer. Check all the fluids — you’re going to be using your screen washer more, for instance, and there’s nothing worse than being stuck in traffic with no fluid left. Check oil and coolant levels too.

Are you confused over Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric – Brian Byrne looks at the pros and cons of the various powertrains to help motorists make up their minds when next buying a car THERE’S a sea-change going on in what kind of cars people are buying. And I’m not surprised when people ask me about it. It’s confusing. So let me share a few thoughts on the kind of powertrain you might be getting mixed up about. After a decade when I always felt Irish consumers had been pushed into buying diesel by politicians who didn’t know their emissions technicalities, the scale is tipping back to a more normal situation. Last year, 45pc of new cars registered were petrol, this year it will probably be 45pc diesel.

Diesel

I’ll be very clear. Diesel as a power source for cars is not going away. There are situations and driving needs where for a long time it will be the rightly preferred option. In long distances and high mileage driving, it remains the most efficient, even if recent tax increases have narrowed the gap against petrol. And with proper NOx emissions management (which anything being sold today has), it is as clean as any other internal combustion engine. Diesel engines still cost more than petrol. As a rule of thumb, you won’t get the cost back over four or five years unless your annual mileage is in excess of 25,000km a year, maybe more. And that driving needs to be mainly highway, as running a diesel substantially on short urban journeys is bad for the engine, the town environment, and the owner’s wallet. As fuel costs tend to be about 16pc of the total cost of running a car for a year, the difference in pump price between petrol and diesel will make a relatively small difference.

The Toyota Prius hybrid is a popular stepping stone to an electric vehicle.

Petrol

CO2, particulates, and NOx — they come out arguably as the environmental and public health better option. If your driving regime is a mix of relatively short and sometimes longer journeys, a fair bit in towns, or mainly commuting

Petrol-engined cars are less expensive, quieter, are a more pleasant driving experience especially in urban areas. On balance between the three key emissions —

which engine to go for? proportions level back, there’s also a ruralurban divide showing, with petrol being of greater interest in cities. That’s natural, but even if you live in the country, don’t buy a diesel unless the numbers stack up that you need it.

Hybrid

There are interesting things happening in the hybrid and pure electric areas of motive power. Thanks largely to the ongoing push from Toyota, hybrids now have 5.5pc of the market, and growing fast. Pure electrics, mostly due to Nissan and Renault, more than doubled share to 0.98pc. Both are obviously still relatively small, but growing. The hybrid will cost more than a non-hybrid petrol. But while that cost could have equated to the difference between petrol and diesel, that’s not the case thanks to a state VRT reduction for electrified cars. Toyota is offering hybrid versions of its Corolla for just €1,200 more than the petrol, for instance, while a diesel Ford Focus is around €2,200 more expensive than its petrol equivalent. Hybrid cars are exceptionally efficient, but mostly while driving in urban situations. On a typical long-distance drive, they are likely to be primarily petrol powered, so the fuel

Bottom line: there’s a car for everybody, but not the same kind of car. Like everything else, it’s good for you if it does what you need. You have to work which one out for yourself.

savings won’t be as much if that latter is your normal usage. That said, I recommend hybrid for many buyers. And the technology is becoming more common outside Toyota.

Electric

Finally, should you be driving the pure electric car bandwagon? Well, it is still a small wagon, with just 1,200 units sold last year out of the 125,000 new cars registered. But the growth is good, the options are much wider — Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen and others have joined the cohort where Nissan’s Leaf has led the way. The calculation is again how you use your car. If you live in suburbia or close to the city, and commute a regular run that’s not more than 100km each way, an electric car makes a deal of sense. You’ll generally be able to work completely from your home charger. Which is just as well, because the public charging network needs substantial updating, but it will get that – eventually. The cost of the car is relatively close to a diesel equivalent, but that’s because there’s an average of €7,500 of a state subsidy. That won’t last, so it may be a good time to invest now. The running costs are worth it if it suits your need.

10 things to know when buying an electric car John Hayes of UCC gives the lowdown on things to watch out for IF you are thinking of buying an electric car, here 10 things – and a bonus one – that you should be aware of:

1. Range – is it a reason to be anxious? The infamous range anxiety is a much talked-about topic for electric vehicles (EV). Let’s do the numbers. The typical Irish driver travels about 50 km a day. The kilowatthour (kWh) is the unit of measure of battery size. Each unit can result in about 3 to 6km of driving for a typical battery-electric vehicle (BEV). The typical BEV on sale in Ireland now comes with a battery pack sized from 28 to 60 kWh. The luxury cars from Tesla are from 75 to 100 kWh. The 40 kWh BEV has a published range of about 270 km. This is over five days’ range in the battery on good driving days. This range will drop by approximately 20 %, as the battery ages over the 8 years for which it is guaranteed. A further drop in range of about 30 % can be expected due to the use of heating, air-conditioning or defrosting on very hot or very cold days. Thus, the range, in several years’ time, could be as low as 150 km in adverse weather conditions. However, that is still close to three days’ driving for the typical driver. Driving aggressively, driving up and down hills, and carrying heavy loads will also reduce the range. So drive less, lighten up, and slow down if you want to maximise the range.

2. Hybrid or fully electric? On The hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) features two energy sources on the car: a battery with an electric motor combining with a high-efficiency petrol engine. Examples are the Toyota Prius, the Lexus RX 450h, the Ford Mondeo and the Hyundai Ioniq. The battery and the electrical system enable the engine to run in the most efficient mode. The car can drive quietly in electric mode for several km when it is inefficient to use the engine. The fuel economy of a HEV is about 50% greater than that of a conventional petrol car. The big advantage of the hybrid is that you get improved efficiency and reduced emissions, while not having to worry about range.

3. How much do you save a month? Battery electric car drivers can save hundreds of euro every month. Essentially your fuel is free at many public chargers,

or is cheap-rate night-time electricity at home. There are serious savings to be made on fuel.

4. Power - are electric cars as powerful as petrol engines? Can they pull my horsebox / trailer? One of the great things about an electric car is the acceleration. The zero-to-100 km/h can be unreally fast and is thrilling for many drivers. Of course, don’t be accelerating too hard because it’s (i) dangerous and (ii) not good efficient driving. Many EVs are not designed for towing, and so be sure and check on whether you can tow or not.

5. Did you know – NASA has been putting electric cars on Mars for decades? The two Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed on the planet Mars in January 2004. They were to last six months while they searched for signs of water on Mars’ surface. Spirit lasted six years and Opportunity died in June 2018. Opportunity completed a marathon on Mars in March 2015 – it was covering about 10m a day. It eventually ran out of energy and died when it got stuck in a crater and its solar panels could not get recharged by the sun.

regenerative braking. When you hit the brakes in an electric car, the computers on the car actually tell the electric motors to capture the energy of the car as it slows down and recharge the battery. So, it’s quite likely that you don’t use the actual brakes at all. This saves a lot in term of wear and tear on brakes, and creates free energy for the battery! No matter what car you drive, it’s important that the tyres are at the correct pressure. If the tyre is under-pressured, then you’ll end up using excess fuel. If the tyre is overpressured, you’ll have a bumpy ride. Driving at the wrong tyre pressure is also dangerous.

6. Tax - is the road tax cheaper? EVs carry the lowest road tax. They are cheap to run after initial purchase… unless you have to replace the battery outside of warranty (see No 9).

7. Maintenance - do they have to go to a special mechanic if something goes wrong?

9. What about battery replacement costs?

Yes, you must go to trained mechanics for service and repairs as battery and hybrid cars have powertrains which are quite different from a conventional car. The garages, which sell electric cars, will have the highly-trained mechanics and technicians which your car requires.

This can be expensive for a battery or hybrid electric car. In general, the batteries are ‘warranteed’ for eight to 10 years. This may lead to the need to replace the battery as the car itself can last for 12 to 16 years. While battery replacement is likely the best environmental option, it will raise the overall cost of ownership of the vehicle, and also drop the resale value of older vehicles.

8. Do the tyres and brakes wear more? One of the wonders of electric cars is

7

10. What comes next for technology? We will likely be seeing hydrogen fuel-cell EVs in Ireland in the next decade. These vehicles will run like an electric car but are powered by compressed hydrogen instead of a large battery. The big truck or bus running a long distance on hydrogen will have one emission from the exhaust pipe – water vapour!

11. Why is there a No 11? It was just supposed to be ten things. Well, it turns out that the volume on a Tesla audio system goes to 11. This feature is a tribute by Elon Musk to the spoof rock movie Spinal Tap. • John Hayes lectures at University College Cork and previously worked in the automotive industry. He is the lead author on Energy Systems, Power Electronics and Drives for Hybrid, Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles.

Wide choice of new cars for 2020 The run-up to the 201 motor registration period in 2020 is now under way, with the motor trade in Ireland hoping that it will boost sales in a year which has been difficult writes Brian Byrne Berlingo Based on the latest and award-winning Berlingo van, they’ve dropped the ‘Multispace’ tag for the passenger car version. Again, the brand has achieved real distinctive detailing, while the underpinning platform and range of petrol and diesel power options make possible a pick for anyone. From €24,345.

AUDI

A1 If you want a small car with a bit of style and the premium sense of VW’s high end division, the A1 comes in Sportback form and in a ‘citycarver’ version that adds some urban SUV features. The contrasting roof colour, and Audi’s own distinctive style cues will set you off from the pack. Engines turbocharged petrol. Highly specced in tech and safety. Prices start from €24,650. E-Tron Recognisably an Audi crossover, this one is the brand’s first all-electric offering. Good design, elegant interior, zero emissions in use. The 360km+ range is excellent, not least because of the high rate of energy recovery during driving. One version, €101,750. Q3 (pictured) The Q3 is a new generation of a popular crossover model, with better style and new engines. The size is right, the 150hp turbo petrol engine is our favourite in the powertrain range. As with all Audis, finish is exemplary and the car has a high specification. Price from €39,600. RS5 They don’t come much cooler looking than this, or with a visual promise of performance that’s well fulfilled. A 2.9 turbo V6 petrol with 450hp, it is surprisingly easy to drive in normal traffic. From €114,050, which makes it a dream for most.

HYUNDAI

BMW

1 Series There’s a brand new 1 Series which among other things sports the much more aggressive style of the new BMW grilles. Unusual in the brand, it is a FWD, reflecting the use of the same platform as the Mini. Nothing wrong with that, at all. There’s more space than before. Petrols and diesels, price from 33,253. 3 Series The desirable icon, fresh in its latest regeneration. In saloon, estate and coupe variants. Much more presence than before. There are petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains. Prices from €44,155. 8 Series (pictured) This is when you go beyond mere luxury. In coupe, convertible, and 4-door Gran Coupe, you need the time and lifestyle to appreciate the long distances and the upmarket destinations. High end petrol up to 530hp, and a diesel. From €108,765. X7 Now BMW has the muscle and size to challenge the top end Range Rovers. The style is big, in your face even. The interior is techno-plush and then a lot more. Not for shrinking violets, and you need a strong neck to keep the begrudgers at bay. From €122,973.

CUPRA

Ateca (pictured) Cupra is now a standalone brand within Volkswagen’s SEAT subsidiary, and this is the first model produced. Based on the parent brand’s compact SUV, it comes with a load of small styling details that make it stand out, as well as a much uprated interior. The real special point though is the 300hp 2.0 turbo engine with auto and AWD. From a not insignificant €50,875.

FORD

Focus ST (pictured) The unmistakable and very pleasant shape of the current focus compact family har has a lot of appropriate style tweaking for its latest power version, the ST3. The relatively non-extreme 190hp from its is actually very well balanced to the car, offering lively performance but not at the expense of comfort. You’ll need to check with your dealer about price and availability. Ranger Raptor Maybe because I first drove it on the scrubby hill tracks and sand dunes of Morocco, I totally fell for this car. With uprated structure and some really need body detailing, the grunt is more than your normal Range’s too. One of the head-turners of the year. From €63,950, which you need to think about in comparison to the standard’s Ranger’s €36,895

CITROEN

C5 Aircross (pictured) This French brand made a conscious decision to capitalise on its original comfort reputation, and the mid-size crossover C5 Aircross absolutely ticks that box. Style is good too, there’ll be no mistaking what you’re driving. No less than 19 specific driver assist and comfort technologies. Petrols, diesels, and 8-speed automatics available. From €26,495.

Kona Electric (pictured) According to the stats, the standard Kona is the biggest selling small crossover in the Irish market. And by a long shot. From a standing start this year, the all-electric version is swishing along to challenge the normal big-seller in the e-cars, Nissan’s Leaf. Smooth drive, decent 449km range. From €38,630.

KIA

eSoul/eNiro Kia has driven hard into the e-car market this year with two models that partly share the same electric drivetrain. Both the e-Niro and the e-Soul offer a 480km+ range, while the e-Niro will soon have a shorter range and less expensive version available. Both drive with finesse, though I’d personally tilt towards the e-Soul because everybody smiles when you swoosh by. From €37,495. Exceed (pictured) It is almost de rigeur now that a successful family saloon should get a variant with elements of urban crossover. Which is exactly what the new XCeed is. The extra trims are elegant and bright, and the interiors can be brash. But that’s the attraction, as is the sense of quality. From €26,345.

MAZDA

Mazda3 (pictured) This one goes down as one of the favourite new cars introduced this year. The style is

Motoring elegant sporty, and does quickly seduce. But the engineering under the skin is just as enticing and the car comes with the very latest petrol and diesel engines developed by the company itself. You’ll just want to keep going back. From €28,320. CX30 Just in time for 2020, a new compact SUV which sits above the CX-3 and below the CX-5. It is a most competitive segment, but the style, renowned reliability, and the excellent engines will garner the model’s own share of what’s going. From €29,495.

generation Renaults. Inside there’s a big change in the sense of quality in the trim and fittings. It comes with improved petrol and diesel engines, but the big interest next year will be the E-Tech Hybrid. Price to come.

improvements, notably a bigger engine, now 2.4L against 2.0, better electricity generation, a more powerful electric motor in the rear. With full AWD capability. Price from just under €40,000. L200 Pickup The sixth generation of the globally wellconsidered Mitsubishi pickup, with a new engine, a range of new driver assist technologies, and a completely new styling that gives a very edgy presence. Among the changes are higher headlamps, to offer better night visibility in all terrains as well as improved protection for the lights themselves. Inside, there’s an extensive use of soft-touch materials, and there’s more storage than on the fifth-generation version. Starting price of €35,000

SKODA

Scala (pictured) It looks a lot more car than its predecessor, although it is in fact shorter overall. But it is taller and wider, and the much sharper front end treatment is in line with that in other recent Skoda new cars. The interior has more real space for occupants than its predecessor. The 1.0 3-cylinder that’s doing widespread duty and very effectively so across various cars on the Volkswagen Group is to be recommended. Price from €25,650. Kamiq Based on the same platform as the Scala hatchback, but Skoda say they’ve changed both chassis and suspension. The SUV is taller, has more headroom, and the designers have given it the first iteration of a fresh front style for the brand. Main lights front and rear are LED. The interior is similar to the Scala. The designers claim the longest wheelbase and the highest ground clearance in the segment. Three petrol and a diesel engine. Priced from €21,300.

MERCEDES-BENZ

GLE (pictured) The GLE has always been regarded as a practical workhorse by customers. This latest model comes with a more progressive look designed to attract a wider and more youthful segment of SUV owners. The cabin is more spacious with room for up to seven people. Four diesel engines to the latest emissions compliance. From €78,395. EQC The first of a range of electric cars from Mercedes-Benz is based on the GLC crossover, but looks and feels larger. The stylists appear to have consciously avoided making the car seem significantly different to the current crop of ‘normal’ MercedesBenz SUVs. Though the EQC badging tells the electric tale. An 80kWh battery energises a pair of electric motors, providing standard AWD and a claimed range of around 450kms. Price from €89,450. CLA A new generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLA compact coupe is available in three design lines and with three petrol engines and one diesel. The new 4-door car is longer and wider than its predecessor, which was introduced six years ago. Details echo those of the large CLS 4-door coupe, while the interior features all the details of the newer M-B cars, including the MBUX information and connectivity system. A Shooting Brake version is coming available. Price from €31,400.

MITSUBISHI

Outlander PHEV (pictured) The updated version of the car that became the best-selling PHEV in Europe. A superbly comfortable crossover, large enough to offer bags of elbow, legs, and head-room and now with substantial powertrain

AWD from €57,990 and Performance from €61,990. A range of up to 560km WLTP with the Long Range variant. Performance is the quickest car in its class, capable of reaching 100km/h in 3.4s.

PEUGEOT

508 Hybrid The new Peugeot 508 Hybrid range combines a 180hp petrol engine with a 110hp electric motor. Driving modes include electric only and standard hybrid. The new powertrain in one of the most elegant cars on the market complements the petrol and diesel versions already familiar. it will be available in saloon and wagon formats. Prices to come. Rifter (pictured) This is one of those very practical van-based cars that should sell in bigger numbers here than they do. This is offered in two lengths with 5- or 7 seats, it makes for a value-formoney family car. Power options are two petrol and four diesels and it retails here from €23,540. 208 and e208 The new generation 208 will be arriving to first customers in early 2020, in a completely new style and with power options including petrol and diesel engines and a fully-electric version with a range of up to 340km. Prices start from €18,300, and €27,334 for the electric one.

TOYOTA

Corolla (pictured) All Corolla and C-HR petrol models to be sold from 2020 in Ireland will be hybrids. These changes follow on from the success already seen from the RAV4 and Camry, exclusively available in hybrid since launching in early 2019. Next year, Toyota Ireland predicts that 92 percent of its passenger car sales will be self-charging hybrid across all models. Prices for Corolla hybrid start from €26,370.

VOLKSWAGEN

SUZUKI

Swift Attitude (pictured) Suzuki’s Swift supermini recently had a new version called Attitude added to the car’s line-up of SZ3, SZ-T, SZ5 and Sport. Exterior sporty looks compare favourably to those of the Swift Sport, but the new grade uses the more affordable 90hp 1.2 petrol engine. Unique exterior design includes a mesh grille, 16-inch alloys, carbon effect skirts and a rear spoiler. Prices start from €17,245.

RENAULT

T-Cross (pictured) The company’s first small SUV, it is the equivalent of the company’s Polo. Standard equipment includes a wide range of driver and safety assist technologies. Power options are two 1.0 petrol engines and 1.6 diesel. By 2025, Volkswagen will be offering more than 30 SUV models throughout the world. Starting price of €22,495. New Golf The eighth generation of VW’s iconic hatchback is built on a revised version of the company’s MQB platform, and will feature mild hybrid technology when it arrives next March. Recently given its global reveal, a strong focus on connectivity, driver assistance and safety technology, and enhanced driving dynamics will feature. Eight versions will be available, with main engines here being the 1.0 115hp petrol and similar output 2.0 diesel.

TESLA

Clio (pictured) It’s the fifth generation of a model which has been around since 1990. It looks bigger than its predecessor but it is actually a tad smaller. The car is the first in a new platform which will underpin a range of next

Model 3 (pictured) Model 3 is Tesla’s smaller, simpler, more affordable car. Designed for ultra-high endurance, specifications include Standard Range Plus from €48,900 and Long Range

THE MOST ANNOYING MOTORING HABITS

Shouting at people when they can’t even hear him anyway just isn’t worth the stress for Brian Byrne To be honest, I’m a fairly easygoing person even while driving, and in the interest of not aggravating myself, I tend to take instances of bad driving by others in my stride. Shouting at them, when they can’t hear me anyway, just isn’t worth the stress. Still, there’s stuff that some of them do which causes me at least to shake my head, though much more if it requires me to take evasive action. Not in any order of demerit, here are a few of my pet hates.

Mobile phones Waiting for the lights to change at an intersection and seeing a crossing driver yapping on his or her mobile phone (both genders are equal offenders) as they both take the crossing and maybe are negotiating a complex turn.

Switching lanes On a multi-lane carriageway with busy traffic, there’s inevitably someone who is constantly switching lanes and even zooming along the hard shoulder in order to get ahead of the posse. Even though quite usually you’ll get to the next lights and find they’ve made no progress

Cutting off lanes Related to the foregoing is the last-minute guy or gal taking the off-ramp from the middle lane, causing angst both to the cars they are cutting off in the inside lane, and those queuing on the ramp already.

Impatient beeping The hurry-up honker who can’t wait a moment for the cars in front to move off before letting everyone know he’s behind them and being discombobulated. In fairness, my experience of driving in many other countries tells me we are not the worst at this in Ireland.

Rubbernecking The rubberneckers who will slow to check out an accident on the other carriageway, distracting their own attention from the road and also helping create a rippling slowdown of the traffic behind them for several kilometres.

Tailgating As a professional driver in my capacity as an automotive journalist, I’m very aware of the

Some of the most annoying habits are drivers illegally parking, using their mobile phones whilst driving, using their horns imaptiently and unnecessarily and tight car parking spaces.

importance of not getting penalty points. Among other things, I stick to speed limits. The tailgater behind me who tries to push me faster is one of my least-favourite idiots.

Traffic build up The country road slow tractor-trailer combo which doesn’t occasionally stop in a gateway to allow the build-up of traffic behind to pass and regain a reasonable level of progress. I have absolute sympathy for the needs of farmers, but not when they don’t reciprocate with consideration of others.

Again, to be fair, the majority of agriculture traffic is very good in this respect.

Illegal parking The ‘I’ll only be a minute’ double-parker, usually in the most awkward part of the road, especially when there are double yellow lines clearly evident. No concern for others. A linked one is the non-disabled driver who uses a disability bay. Should be personally clamped on a leg for a day.

13

Small parking spaces And finally, from a list which could probably be much longer, this one is not aimed at motorists, but at the architects and engineers who don’t provide adequately wide parking spaces in both overground and underground parking areas. Especially those same architects who make access to underground garages so fiendishly narrow. It’s almost as if they don’t drive. Stay calm anyhow ...
