Sorrisos Author: Pierre Verger Pierre Verger had a unique way of living, with extreme simplicity and total renunciation of material goods, which gave him a different and affectionate look about the human being. It was this vision of life that enabled him to record the poetry of smiles. In this photo book he captured beautiful joyful moments by photographing people in Oceania, Asia, Africa and the Americas. In this book by Pierre Verger, beautiful photographic images can be viewed alongside phrases and poems that reflect on the smile. As Charles Chaplin said “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” 17,5 x 17,5 cm • hardcover • 88 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-38-1

Iêda Marques

Remembrances, imaginary and reality Author: Iêda Marques Photography is the basis of Iêda Marques’s writing. This is the cultural and sentimental journey offered by this book. 22 x 28 cm • hardcover • 152 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-46-6

Carybé & Verger Folks from Bahia

es

Text: José de Jesus Barreto Richly illustrated, this book tells the story of the friendship and partnership of two major foreign artists who adopted Bahia and contributed African-Bahian culture: the Argentine-born but quintessentially Bahian artist Carybé, and French photographer and ethnologist Pierre Verger. In addition to presenting a carefully researched essay, this edition innovates by combining Verger’s photos with Carybé’s drawings and paintings. Published for the Pierre Verger Foundation in June 2008, this is the first book in the Between Friends trilogy. Written by José de Jesus Barreto; English translation by H. Sabrina Gledhill.

Trajeto criativo Autora: Sonia Rangel This is an essay on Creation Processes in which Sonia Rangel, to discuss poetic operations, will reveal the warp of cycles of her work as an artist. She establishes a dialogue with key authors of game, image and memory articulated with the creating process. By sharing her thinking path, the many dimensions involved in a poetic doreflect emerge, she draws a "method" as a compelling way, from the artistic practice as research, bringing up an original and hybrid "pedagogy", which is unveiled as part of her literary, visual and scenic creations. The essay is punctuated and ilustrated with the author’s drawings. 12,5 x 19 cm • 80 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-70-1

Series Traces of Enchantment

Candomblé in Bahia Folks from Bahia

Photographs: Isabel Gouvea. Ilustrations: Enéas Guerra

Author: José de Jesus Barreto The intention of this book by José de Jesus Barreto is only a starting point, to light a flame, erase the fear and, with the permission and the blessings of the Orishas, to open a door, to perceive, without prejudice, a different, magical and real world, one that is rich and little known, even though it is a part of everyday life: religion and the worhip of Orishas in Candomblé temples of Bahia. 15 x 21 cm • 96 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-16-9

Series Traces of Enchantment

Imagens da diáspora Authors: Goya Lopes e Gustavo Falcón Over the course of three centuries, about 12.5 million Africans were forced to leave their homelands and work as slaves in the colonial Americas. Brazil received nearly 5 million of those souls. This black diaspora resulted in an innovative experience, mingling races and creating a new people in the Americas. This book highlights the African trajectory in Brazil and emphasizes the uniqueness and the beauty of Afro-Brazilian heritage, represented by the inimitable work of designer Goya Lopes, accompanied by informative essays by historian Gustavo Falcón. 15 x 21 cm • 80 pages portuguese and english • ISBN: 978-85-89059-26-8

Series Traces of Enchantment

Dry season An experience in Angola Author: José de Jesus Barreto “Cacimbo” means dry season. It is the time of year when rain does not fall in Angola, dragging on from May to late August. The “cashimbo” as the Angolans pronounce it, becomes a state of mind, dry as the dust that impregnates everything and everyone with deep longing. This book by José de Jesus Barreto, written in the language typical of Bahian literary journalism, portrays the heritage and differences between Luanda (Angola) and Salvador (Brazil), two feminine cities, daughters of water, captured during the dry season in 2008. Angola is the grandmother of Bahia, Barreto concludes. The essays are half reports and half poems, like the baobab, the tree that symbolizes the Angolan nation, with its deep roots, broad trunk and sparse foliage. Its branches are leafless, parched and dusty during the dry season, just like the landscape, things and living creatures of Angola.

The artist illustrations tell us stories narrated with beautiful images, full of feelings, expression, lightness and originality. The author, an expert using watercolor, draws water into shades creating reliefs, thus enhancing and portraying with great care the iconography of each Orixa.

Maratonas A cultural view of cities Author: Ney Cayres Chronicling the urban races he has most enjoyed, Ney Cayres describes each city’s architecture, literature, food, and amusing incidents that happened during the competitions, historical events and technical details of the development of the sport. This book makes it clear that, far beyond organizing marathons, cities offer a variety of interesting situations for a wide range of tastes, expectations and curiosities, enriching and supporting the maxim of the Baron de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games: “The important thing is not winning, but taking part.” 15 x 21 cm • 128 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-62-6

Jorge Sanmartin The Ball’s Fantastic World Author: Jorge Sanmartin The book topics include the passion for the word, for the microphone and the ball, for the fascination for the radio, for the precise and well-spoken phrase, and for soccer. Jorge Sanmartin--The Ball’s Fantastic World presents a narrative profile and the professional life memories of the protagonist, Sanmartin, also known as Super San, during 50 years. Sanmartin was a radio broadcaster, journalist, communicator and a truthful citizen. He was a good professional, a reporter obsessed with the news in search of a never accomplished perfection. He was always committed with the listener, the reader--the captive followers. This book is especially a song of praise to his friends in life. It also includes some criticism to the mistakes made and the recognition of certain life loves: the ball, the radio, the music, good companies and the blessed words 15 x 21 cm • 128 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-82-4

Xing Ling: Made in China Author: Victor Mascarenhas Governments and people controlled by large corporations, urban chaos and rampant real estate speculation. It seems like the news of the day, but it is the backdrop of this science fiction allegory, a farcical, debauched and political work that marks the debut of Victor Mascarenhas as a novelist. Amid terrorist synthetic drug traffickers, plastic baroque saints, heavily armed Bahians, and Chinese bureaucrats, Xing Ling takes us to an increasingly present future, where nothing is what it seems and everything seems to be something it is not. 12,5 x 19 cm • 80 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-51-0

A certain malaise Author: Victor Mascarenhas A Certain Malaise is Victor Mascarenhas’ the third book of stories and the author continues doing what the writer Fausto Fawcett defined as “a dantesque tour trhough little lives walking in mental, social and sentimental circles of stillness. People whose hearts have turned into time-bombs ready to explode for any reason.” The book contains thirteen stories in which the incisive, cinematographic and ironic narrative of the author is present, a flyby over characters, scenarios and ordinarily amazing conflicts.. 12,5 x 19 cm • 96 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-73-2

Thirteen Real Tales Author: José de Jesus Barreto Ilustrator: Enéas Guerra

Enéas Guerra

Bahian literature is a reality. Thirteen Real Tales is proof of it: in the themes discussed; in the wording and rhythm of the writing; in the unassuming features of Enéas Guerra; in the colors and the edition of Solisluna; in the way of observing and understanding the occurrences of a world without frontiers between here and there, between the delightful and the astonishment. This work has a taste of mystery and mixture, something that is typical from Bahia. 12,5 x 19 cm • 96 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-92-3

The Curious Destiny of Rita Quebra-Cama and Other Tales Author: Ricardo Ishmael Ilustrator: Juraci Dórea The book is composed of seven fictional short stories, including the one that titles the book. The stories are set in the Brazilian northeastern backlands but deal with universal themes: land disputes, armed conflicts, family dramas, love relationships and popular legends. Violence, tragedy and fantastic realism are present in some stories. The book also offers some picturesque descriptions of life in the hinterland, narrated in an agile and direct way. The characters and their dilemmas, though created wholly out of the author’s imagination, compose a faithful, dynamic, and timeless clipping of the life experience of hinterland’s women and men. 15 x 21 cm • 144 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-90-9

Minimal notes Author: Katherine Funke Ilustrator: Enéas Guerra A collection of short stories by journalist Katherine Funke, these brief narratives cover sublime moments of a wide range of human situations, most of them in quite common occurrences, such as a walk down the street, a bank queue or waiting at an airport. Illustrated by Enéas Guerra.

12,5 x 19 cm • 128 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-23-7

The bahian women from the port pier Author: João Bosco Quirelli A patchwork quilt of Bahian life. Perhaps that is the best summary of this romance. Zulmira is the face of what it means to be from the state of Bahia. People from Bahia transcend the simple way of living just to live; they pass through the rocks and thorns of life without scratching themselves; they radiate human warmth and charm,

despite all of life’s everyday traps. Zulmira is charm and magic, wisdom and joy, overflowing, overcoming and transforming love. 15 x 21 cm • 144 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-66-4

Marce Author: Gláucia Lemos Looking at the mirror of time, Gláucia Lemos sees in this work the wrinkles of the human soul, sculpting them with words that carve grooves, sometimes deep, sometimes delicate, beaded by the clash between losses and ambitions, the bindings and outcomes, and the stunted dreams and ruptured characters of a family who reunite after 26 years to discuss and sign a will. The distance of the past overwhelms them and makes them like strangers, exposing painful memories. 15 x 21 cm • 144 pages portuguese • ISBN: 978-85-89059-54-1

Who are you? Beyond who you think you are! Author: Norma Teixeira Vicente There is much knowledge to remember. What the author Norma Teixeira Vicente presents in this book is just a little bit of what she was remembering through daily meditation, and what some Superior Beings helped her to remember: our cosmic origin and the laws that support it, the 19 Universes and how we project ourselves in them, our skills beyond matter, the importance of Love in our daily lives and the presence of Cosmic Sounds in our body. Norma invites you to open a space in your concrete mind to reflect on these possibilities and information that she reports and that are already in you. It is always rewarding when we open ourselves to hear about other experiences, new paradigms and the removal of veils between concrete mental, abstract mental and higher mental.
