Where has summer gone! We are well and truly into September and it seems that time is running so fast we can hardly keep up! This feeling of always being one step behind becomes even more intense here at SOFFA in the so-called ‘pause’ between print editions, when we prepare our mini online issue. In the one you have just started to peruse we are literally running - as part of our SOFFA & NIKE Challenge. We will also take you on a journey to the western United States, this time without running shoes, and you’ll be among the first to learn about IKEA’s new smart lighting system. Happy reading and a pleasant start to the autumn, Your SOFFA team on the run

W E CAN D O IT, A N D S O C A N YO U ! text: Yasmin Keshmiri Hejduk | photo: Julie Orlow, Ondřej Lipár

WE HAD A LOT OF FUN PREPARING OUR EXCITING CURRENT ISSUE #SOFFA16, WHICH IS ALL ABOUT SPORT. FROM THE START OF OUR WORK ON THE ISSUE SPORT BECAME INTEGRAL TO OUR DAILY CONVERSATIONS, AND ALTHOUGH WE ALL LIKE TO CONSIDER OURSELVES SPORTY, WE ALSO KNOW THAT OUR JOBS AND LIFESTYLES DON’T LEAVE MUCH ROOM FOR A DECENT FITNESS ROUTINE. Our team has many different sporting interests, ranging from dancing, boxing, yoga to intensive training. Yet we have to admit that even with our best efforts to make it to a fitness class or the gym, getting a workout is harder than we would like. So we decided to set ourselves a challenge and learn all about fitness from some of the best trainers that Prague has to offer. We teamed up with NIKE + RUN CLUB and NIKE + TRAINING CLUB to try and find a better work / training balance. Starting a new fitness routine can be difficult, but seeing as the whole SOFFA gang has signed up to be part of this challenge, we feel confident that together we will achieve a better balanced sport and work life. The SOFFA Challenge has four exciting workshops: Mobility, Running, Circuit training and Yoga. We have already experienced the wonderful benefits of the first two workshops and have decided to share with you our learnings so far. #SoffaChallenge, #nikewomen, #nikerunning, #nrcprg, #ntcprg

WO R K S H O P 1 : M O B I L I T Y AS THE OFFICIAL START TO OUR SOFFA & NIKE CHALLENGE, THE WORKSHOP ON MOBILITY WAS A VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE. WE EXPECTED SOME STRETCHING AND BODY MOVEMENT, BUT WE DID NOT EXPECT TO WORK HARD, SWEAT, AND WAKE THE NEXT DAY SORE LIKE WE HAD RUN A MARATHON! SO WHAT IS THIS NEW YET FUNDAMENTALLY IMPORTANT FITNESS AREA? MOBILITY IS AN EXERCISE ROUTINE WHICH IS FOCUSED ON STRENGTHENING AND EXTENDING YOUR JOINTS TO HELP CONTROL YOUR BODY LOAD, REDUCE STIFFNESS AND PROMOTE BETTER OVERALL MOVEMENT. FITNESS AND EXERCISE ROUTINES ARE BEGINNING TO TAKE A MORE HOLISTIC BODY APPROACH, AND STRETCHING AND MOBILITY HAVE BECOME INTEGRAL TO A SUCCESSFUL AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, INJURY FREE FITNESS LIFESTYLE. OUR MOBILITY WORKSHOP WAS WITH THE WONDERFUL RADKA VANDASOVÁ, WHO TOOK US THROUGH MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF MOBILITY TRAINING. SHE POINTED OUT THAT CERTAIN POSITIONS CAN BE DIFFICULT DUE TO LACK OF MOBILITY IN VARIOUS JOINTS AND CAN BE IMPROVED VASTLY IN MOBILITY TRAINING. FOR EXAMPLE, SQUATS BECOME EASIER WHEN YOU IMPROVE MOBILITY IN YOUR ANKLES AND SHOULDER EXTENSIONS CAN CHANGE THE WAY YOU DO A HANDSTAND. RADKA’S APPROACH TO MAINTAINING A STRONG AND HEALTHY BODY THROUGH INTEGRATING MOBILITY INTO A FITNESS PROGRAMME WAS NOT ONLY PRACTICAL AND COMMONSENSICAL BUT ALSO INSPIRING.

WOR K SHO P 2 : RU N N I N G RUNNING IS A NATURAL MOVEMENT WITH WHICH WE SHOULD ALL BE FAMILIAR, SO WE WERE ALL REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING MICHAL KULKA AND LEARNING SOME SIMPLE PRINCIPLES TO IMPROVE OUR RUNNING. MICHAL HAS BEEN WORKING WITH NIKE FOR ALMOST TEN YEARS AND IS CURRENTLY THEIR HEAD COACH, SO WE KNEW WE WERE IN GOOD HANDS. RUNNING HAS BECOME VERY POPULAR OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS WITH MANY SMALL RUNS AND MARATHONS ORGANISED IN JUST ABOUT EVERY CITY. NO WONDER THAT ON ANY GIVEN DAY YOU WILL SEE RUNNERS ALONE OR IN GROUPS ENJOYING AN ACCESSIBLE AND INEXPENSIVE WAY TO KEEP FIT. BUT IF YOU WANT TO TAKE RUNNING SERIOUSLY IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW SOME SIMPLE PRINCIPLES TO PREVENT INJURY AND TO MAXIMISE YOUR WORKOUT. DURING THE TRAINING WE WERE INTRODUCED TO DYNAMIC WARM UPS, RUNNING DRILLS, UPHILL RUNNING GAMES, PROPER HAND POSITIONS AND MANY MORE USEFUL TIPS. WE ALSO LEARNED ABOUT THE NIKE + RUNNING CLUB APP, A USEFUL WIDGET TO START YOU RUNNING, GET YOU CONNECTED TO A RUNNING COMMUNITY, OR HELP YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST RACE. WE HAD A BEAUTIFUL MORNING AS A GROUP TRAINING WITH MICHAL AND WOULD ADVISE ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN RUNNING TO BE SMART AND GET GOING WITH THE HELP OF NIKE.

COAC HE S’ TIP S: It’s been great to get to know our Nike Coaches. To give our readers the benefit of their expert knowledge, we asked each coach three questions to find out how they think about sport and keeping fit. 1 NUTRITION AND SUPPLEMENTS ARE A HUGE TOPIC THESE DAYS. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE ON THE BEST PRE / POST WORKOUT NUTRITION TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAIN OPTIMUM HEALTH? 2 SPORT AND FITNESS HAVE SEEN A MASSIVE SURGE IN POPULARITY IN THE LAST FEW YEARS. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THIS TO? 3 WHAT ARE THE THREE KEY POINTS FOR SUCCESS ONE SHOULD KEEP IN MIND WHEN BEGINNING A NEW FITNESS REGIME?

18

RADKA VANDASOVÁ

MICHAL KULKA

1 Sleeping and eating go hand in hand. Find your optimal sleeping needs and keep a good sleeping regime as well as good eating habits. It’s important to keep a healthy, balanced body throughout your day, not just for your workouts. Instead of focussing too much on pre or post workout needs, put more emphasis on eating high quality meals in general.

1 Nutrition is very important for everyone. My advice is to eat as little as possible before training, for about two hours if possible. Then after training eat what is healthy and good for your body.

2 Due to our modern comfortable lifestyle more people are experiencing health problems, which encourages more sport activities. Health insurance companies are also offering benefits to motivate people to do more sport. Finally, sport and health food companies labour in promoting their products to show the advantages of engaging in a more healthy lifestyle.

2 A key factor is that it has become trendy to be sporty and healthy, with emphasis on looking and feeling good. Running is a basic activity and a cheap sport, so it is easily accessible for people. 3 Motivation, discipline, and actively promoting good feelings and moods.

3 Start from the beginning, taking your progress step by step. Set a realistic goal or target. Find help! It’s always better to start with a trainer or a friend who can help you achieve your goal and keep you motivated and on the right track.

ONE HUNDRED METRES CAN BE COVERED IN A FEW SECONDS BY A SPRINTER. FORTY PLUS KILOMETRES IN A FEW HOURS BY A MARATHON RUNNER. AND THEN THERE ARE DISTANCES FOR WHICH RUNNING WILL NOT DO - DISTANCES FOR WHICH YOU CAN DO NOTHING BUT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND ADMIRE THE VAST SPACE STRETCHING IN ALL DIRECTIONS. AND IF YOU ARE ANYTHING LIKE OUR PHOTOGRAPHER ADÉLA, PULL OUT THE TRIPOD, AFFIX THE CAMERA AND RELEASE THE SHUTTER. HEAVEN!

Waiting for the sunset along the road to Palm Springs. The scene of an abandoned petrol station shrouded in fading light appears to be a set from a David Lynch or Quentin Tarantino film.

25

The more than three thousand wind turbines dotting the landscape of windy southern California are rarely still. In an arid landscape hostile to anything but shrubbery and reptiles, the neat rows of white propellers look to be a magical forest from the 21st century.

Taking in the scenery along the way to majestic Grand Canyon. The sky is clear and the clouds completely still, as if the whole world has taken a brief pause.

WITH THE BEGINNING OF AUTUMN WE SLOWLY RETURN INDOORS AND SPEND MORE TIME AT HOME. THE DAYS ARE SHORTER YET WE CRAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF LIGHT WE HAD IN THE WARM SUMMER MONTHS. LIGHT IS ESSENTIAL FOR HUMANS AND IF USED WELL, IT CAN HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON OUR LIVES AND EMOTIONS. THIS IS SOMETHING THEY KNOW WELL AT IKEA, WHERE BEGINNING THIS OCTOBER YOU WILL FIND A NEW LINE OF SMART LIGHTING PRODUCTS. COME WITH US TO EXPLORE ALL THAT #SMARTLIGHTING IKEA CAN DO! IKEA’s smart lighting is all about emotions. Thanks to the TRÅDFRI series, which includes LED light bulbs with remote control and other smart lighting products, such as lighted doors JORMLIEN/SURTE and the lighted panel FLOALT LED. Now you can improve your home with a beautiful, functional and sustainable lighting solution. Controlled remotely with the TRÅDFRI remote control, IKEA’s LED lights, lighted doors (designed for kitchen cabinets METOD and the storage system BESTÅ) and lighted panels have a range of other functions. They can be dimmed remotely and offer three different types of light in one system - warm, neutral and white, so it’s entirely up to you which light temperature you choose, or whether you go for a combination of all three. #Smartlighting allows you to select warm light for your evening meal and white, clear light for your work, ideal for rooms that don’t receive enough natural light. Thanks to the various shades of light you can change the atmosphere of your home on a daily basis, which can be great fun and a wonderful visual feast. What do you say?
