T

he communities of Essex, Gloucester, Ipswich, Rockport, and Manchester-By-The-Sea, are an eclectic collection of uniquely positioned coastal towns and villages offering breathtaking views, sandy beaches, a host of maritime activities, plenty of fine dining, and art communities specific to Greater Cape Ann. It is a destination welcoming visitors all year long, but surges in the summer because of its convenience from all points on the map and proximity to Boston’s Logan Airport, T.F. Green International in nearby Providence, and Manchester Airport in New Hampshire. Cape Ann is often the first choice for travelers looking for an easily accessed vacation because it lacks the difficulties of other tourist spots that deliver automobile traffic and bridge bottlenecks—something we’ve all experienced a time or two.

GLOUCESTER’S FOUNDING

Cape Ann was home to the Vikings and Native Americans before French explorer Samuel de Champlain ventured into the harbor in 1606, memorializing it as “le beau port.” Seventeen years later, the English arrived to catch an abundance of cod fish for European markets. According to a story by David Leeco, 14 “spare men” were left behind, causing increased interest in the vast opportunities across the ocean. MAKING THE BIG SCREEN

This month we ventured to this fascinating seaport which has achieved global attention and accolades for its successful integration of a commercial waterfront, a proud history, and luxury accommodations and lifestyle. Gloucester lays claim as the oldest working seaport in America. It has been shown worldwide because of the film The Perfect Storm, released in 2000. Named a Hollywood blockbuster—nominated for two Academy Awards, not a soul is unfamiliar with the frightening tale. The movie was based NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | JULY 2022 | 27

on a true story about a Gloucester fishing crew who faced incredible odds while attempting to return to port with their catch. The story remains in the hearts and minds of many; tourists continue to flock to the “Crow’s Nest,” a rough and tumble watering hole where the original crew met with their cadre. Another flick was being worked on during our stay at the seaport; film crews kept busy with actors performing for the soon-to-be-released crime-drama Finestkind. While many other locations will appear as backdrops, there is no replacing authenticity Gloucester adds to such a story.

AN ADVENTUROUS VACATION

Looking for extraordinary experiences, Gloucester is a port of discovery! Opportunities abound, from whale-watching, day-sailing aboard a heritage schooner, or perhaps an elegant journey aboard the Beauport Cruise Liner. For others, it may be big-game fishing off the coast (from the docks made famous by the TV series, Wicked Tuna) Tuna) or ending the day with a hike and rock-climbing at Stage Fort Park. Few vacations offer so many memorable experiences within minutes of each other. MUSEUMS, SHOPPING, AND SEAFOOD

It’s all here and waiting for your arrival; off the boat, “lobsta,” freshly caught delicacies, sweet treats, and creative summer-time cocktails at outdoor cafés are found around every corner. Main Street Gloucester is lined with shops and boutiques carrying familiar designer names, locally made wares, and art. Tourists can shop for antiques, books, jewelry, or a perfect souvenir for friends and family back home. You’ll find an impressive assortment of stores showcasing hard-to-find olive oils, tasty chocolate, and homemade bread for a snack. And, if you need to unwind further or feel pampered, several salons and spas are ready to help with all the necessary services and treatments. 28 | JULY 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

THE HAMMOND CASTLE MUSEUM

A trip to Gloucester is incomplete without visiting the “Castle.” It is a treasure and of high importance. John Hays Hammond Jr. was an inventor and what some call a bit eccentric, but regardless of what people believe, he left a unique legacy. According to the museum officials, “Hammond was known as ’The Father of Radio Control,’ [and] was one of America’s most prolific inventors. [He was] a protégé of Guglielmo Marconi, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell.” His lifetime achievements include ownership of numerous patents and the radio control for echoguided torpedoes for the military. But what is truly marvelous about the inventor’s life is the home he left behind. Friends with, and influenced by, the likes of William Randolph Hearst Sr. and Isabella Stewart Gardner, Hammond constructed (1926-1929) an elaborate home and museum (1930) in the style of a European castle with a mix of Medieval, French Chateau, and Gothic Cathedral styling. The

custom-built home, museum, and laboratory were built with authentic period materials and architectural elements such as 15th century tile, 16th century doorways and facades, and period furnishings. The Hammond Castle Museum offers free parking and admission—donations are graciously accepted, guided and self-guided tours, and multi-level membership opportunities. It is a 501 (c) non-profit organization listed as a National Historic Landmark. NEXT STEPS

2023 marks Gloucester’s 400th birthday. The town will commemorate its illustrious history and anniversary when the first settlement took hold. The quadrennial will provide global recognition, substantial economic benefits, and “Civil, Community & Cultural Engagement,” according to the committee’s website, gloucesterma400.org. If there was ever a location that encompasses elements of American history, sought-after attractions, and a modern lifestyle and enjoyment, Gloucester is the perfect choice for your next vacation. H

he Beauport Hotel is a beacon from the sea and a magnificent sight to behold from “The Boulevard,” where memorials and tributes attract tourists from around the globe. Visitors come to Gloucester to share their respect for those who make their livelihoods from the sea—and the brave souls who lost theirs while working out of America’s oldest seaport. The hotel’s name and fine dining restaurant are reminiscent of a visit by French explorer Samuel de Champlain who entered the anchorage in 1606, memorializing its location as “le beau port”—the beautiful harbor. 32 | JULY 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Over four hundred years later, Beauport represents the conservation and preservation of a tried and tested legacy. Nestled among the commercial fishing fleet, tourism, and retailers, Beauport serves as an anchor to the entire Cape Ann community. It is a model, and a sea-breeze

of fresh air, of what can be accomplished when a vision combined with thoughtful development adheres to the belief that all parties must work together towards a common goal. Much was garnered during my visit to Beauport; I learned the upscale, independent, full-service hotel is devoted to providing superior vacation and event experiences under Sheree Zizik, a recognized hospitality leader and owner. Zizik, Managing Director Ray Johnston, and devoted staff are grounded in delivering an exceptional standard of hospitality, distinguishing them from others. Skillful and professional, it is refreshing to witness their meticulous effort and mindfulness to ensure each guest feels special.

The property is visually stunning; designed and built approximately six years ago upon the former Bird’s Eye plant. The previous site was not only an eyesore but dangerous; the beach was ruined and littered with refuse. Yet, the Beauport Hospitality Group saw potential. Beauport’s picturesque oceanfront location is amorous, complemented by an unbridled elegance and charm. It offers an unforgettable experience with 94 ocean and city view rooms, tastefully designed with its guest’s satisfaction in mind. Decorated in luxurious colors with lush bedding, local art, and lavish bathrooms, every element resonates with “quintessential New England” while achieving a superior level of luxury. air, while the 360˚ views of the ocean, docks, and city encompass the psyche. There is a vibe within the adults-only space allowing an expressive release of stress and responsibility, the result of basking in the heated pool, then moving to the jetted hot tub, reserved exclusively for overnight guests. The staff is impressive and astonishingly efficient; lounging chairs, stools, and sitting areas are continuously arranged for each new guest’s arrival, towels are neatly aligned, and never a lonely glass is left in sight throughout the day. Relaxing while perusing the Birdseye’s beverage and food menu—poolside—will cause you to believe you’ve found heaven—wishing never to leave. The hotel’s lobby, rising above sea level, is beyond incredible—it’s spectacular. Open and airy, it features a sitting area with a fireplace, a Concierge, the front desk—open around the clock, an upscale gift boutique; entrances to the

Ball Room, 1606 Restaurant & Oyster Bar (with a private dining room), and at 12 o’clock, a view of a bar, fireplace lounge, and a vast deck, detailed in bright blue and white umbrellas. As guests arrive, they become acquainted with how Beauport paints its portrait of hospitality; branded priority bicycles, a colorful VW “Beach Bus,” complete with a surfboard, and enough valets that there isn’t any wait. These special touches tease a guest’s anticipation while setting the stage for a distinctive seaside experience. Famous for wedding events, Beauport hosts the most elegant affairs providing a storybook backdrop, and whether large or small, the ceremony and reception will be cherished for a lifetime. During my stay, I observed two couples exchange vows from the rooftop—both traditions were beautiful. The Beauport Hospitality Group manages other properties and restaurants, along with a sparkling cruise

ship that regularly cruises around Cape Ann; it too is called Beauport! Over a few days, I spoke to numerous hotel guests, locals who are frequent visitors, and countless staff about their

experiences at Beauport. In every case, each had praise for the other; I also learned that many guests have vacationed at the hotel multiple times and are excited about returning. From personal experience, my satisfaction could not have reached a higher summit. The transparency and authenticity of my hosts focusing on my pleasure and enjoyment will be difficult to duplicate—it was touching and caused me unexpected sadness when I had to leave; however, I will return. For your next vacation or special event, I recommend Beauport; it will exceed your expectations and turn you into a Beauport family. I enthusiastically award Beauport Five-Stars. could be called Beauty & The Feast because, under the direction of Executive Chef Jon McKechnie and his culinary team, hotel guests and restaurant visitors are treated to an expansive menu of creative and delicious cuisine using locally sourced products and boat-to-table seafood from one of the most famous ports in the country. Entering the lobby brings you to the team of hostesses who will find you the perfect location to fit your mood and party size. wine, or a magnum of Champagne, while surrounded by scenic charm and grace, patrons find an impressive carte du jour throughout the day. 1606 also provides private dining options, and whether you plan a special occasion or a business meeting, the staff will ensure your event will be flawless. A popular dining site within the community, the hotel’s Sunday Brunch, 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m., is a delightful means for a small gathering of friends or to meet with family members. The Chef and his staff are marvelous; they cover essential meals; serving breakfast 7–11 a.m., moving into lunch followed by dinner, 11:30 a.m.–

9 p.m., (Friday-Saturday until 10 p.m.); the team is always prepared to deliver a creative and enchanting array of delicious options for thousands of satisfied diners each week. It is perplexing how the menus are marshaled; it is as if they anticipate the needs and desires of each guest’s tastes and preferences. Light or generous, it’s easy to find the perfect choice for the moment. In my grazing, I discovered outstanding highlights that need to be shared. Breakfast can often be ordinary, but not at 1606; their avocado toast served on grilled focaccia, petite greens, a hardboiled egg, pickled red onion, marinated

tomatoes, and chard lemon aioli is a perfect start for the day. Their signature eggs benedict using cage-free eggs, north country Canadian bacon, OMG English muffin, hollandaise, and breakfast potatoes is equally fantastic. And, I would be remiss if not to mention how the Belgian-style waffle with macerated berries, whipped cream, Vermont maple syrup, and a side of lean breakfast sausage delights. As for lunch and dinner, there is no compromising on imaginative creations. To begin, if you love lobster bisque, as I do, there is no substitute for the velvety texture, depth of flavor, and tender lobster meat in every spoonful; it’s award-winning! Other favorites include the octopus terrine comprised of thinly sliced tender Spanish octopus, squid ink aioli, sea beans, saffron potatoes, charred scallions, and finger limes, or a healthy treat, lobster summer rolls, served with mango, Napa cabbage, pickled carrots, avocado, cucumber, wrapped in rice paper and served with Yuzu soy dipping sauce. The raw bar has a beautiful on-ice display, offering native Cape Ann lobster tails, local oysters, king crab, jumbo shrimp, and little neck clams; towers come in two sizes. A favorite in New England, the baked haddock casserole with white wine, butter, and roasted new potatoes is very satisfying. For seafood lovers, you must indulge with the sesame-crusted tuna with vegetable slaw, pickled ginger, sushi rice, ginger scallion sauce, and crispy seaweed. Then, my favorite, perfectly seared halibut with potato terrine, charred spring onions, baby carrots, patty pan squash, and caviar Beurre Blanc. Yes, 1606 is reelingly delicious. And, whether a hotel guest or visitor, the upscale atmosphere, excellent service, and delectable choices will have you— as the Beauport says, “Coming for the menu, staying for the vibe.” H For more information or to make a reservation, visit 1606restaurant.com. Ferrari, A Name Recognized In Quality Wines

I

n the far north region of Italy, is the mountainous region of Trentino, where the conditions are superb for growing grapes that make a sparkling wine capable of challenging the finest French Champagnes; the name and legacy for such refined quality and taste is Ferrari Trento. In 1902, Giulio Ferrari began his vocation by starting a vineyard of Chardonnay grapes; today, his efforts are realized and appreciated by an adoring public. Now that summer has arrived, the 54 month-aged Ferrari Perlé, Trentodoc, has come to our shores with refreshing elegance and exquisite taste. One of the many members of the six lines produced by Ferrari Trento, it is by far the most suitable sparkling wine—not just for celebrating, but for the enjoyment of living! Perfectly paired with seasonal dishes and desserts, its yellow depth and fine pearls (effervescence) yield a seductive, velvety texture. Spirited with light flavors of apple and almond, no other can match the sophistication of Ferrari Perlé. From Argentina Come Refreshing Choices—TILIA Wines

T

he town of Mendoza is surrounded and connected with the environment and its citizens; lush vineyards, perfect temperatures, and sunshine aren’t just for producing grapes, it is a way of life, and a mission focused on education about sustainability in Argentina and the rest of the world. TILIA Wines is proud to partner in the country’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, currently holding at 25 percent less than that of the United States, Australia, and Canada, and half those of the United Kingdom and New Zealand. This summer’s choices include TILIA Chardonnay from the Mendoza’s Eastern and Southern Regions. The Chardonnay yields a golden yellow color with

greenish hues. It has a delicious nose of white flowers and tropical fruit (pineapple, banana, and peach), laced with complex, refreshing mineral hints. Its fresh and intense mouthfeel of sweet tropical fruit and peach, laced with crème brûlée and toasted bread flavors, is delightful. This Chardonnay pairs well with most chicken dishes, pasta dishes with cream sauces, and many seafood recipes like Grilled Salmon with Mango Salsa. NEXT IS THE TILIA MALBEC/SYRAH OF THE EAST VALLEY & UCO VALLEY

Boasting an intense violet color, it has a complex nose of red and dark fruit with subtle spice and leather hints. Perfect pairings with this red blend include spicy meat dishes like Szechuan Noodles with Spicy Beef Sauce. H For more information, visit tiliawines.com.

Experience Vermont-Based Saxtons River Distillery

nspired by owner Christian Stromberg’s old world, Lithuanian heritage, and family traditions, Saxtons River specializes in smallbatch craft bourbon, rye, and gin, (vodka coming soon), created with local ingredients and flavors. After 15 years in the automotive, aircraft, and fiber optics engineering industry, Stromberg left to try something different; to create the best alcoholic spirits, using local ingredients distilled through a meticulous process he invented. Drawn to the taste of the local Vermont maple syrup, it brought him back to his Lithuanian roots of Krupnikas—grain spirits sweetened with honey—inspiring his first product, Sapling Vermont Maple Liqueur.

Fast-forward to today, Saxtons River Distillery, located in Brattleboro, remains true to its beginnings of producing premier spirits known for bold, yet smooth, tastes. The distillery offers a wide selection of spirits which includes Snowdrop Gin, vacuumed-distilled, not cooked for a lighter and refined taste; Sapling Vermont Maple Bourbon, possessing a toasted caramel flavor; Sapling Double Barrel Bourbon, with a higher proof; smooth tasting Sapling Vermont Maple Rye; Sapling Honey Bourbon made of Vermont-sourced honey; and our favorite, Perk, a full-bodied coffee liqueur, that doesn’t taste sugary, but instead potent and rich. Gentleman Jack BY JAMES HOLDEN

BO has never shied from exciting stories, although they may have strayed a time or two about accurate portrayals of characters. Yet, it appears they relied heavily on the diaries of Anne Lister, played by the incredible actress and producer professionally known as Suranne Jones, making the mini-series Gentleman Jack a winner! For background, throughout the 19th century, the word “Gentleman,” when used to describe a woman exhibiting masculine appearances, was slang and a hurtful means of labeling them a “dyke.” The slur “Jack” accompaniment was used to identify a person as a lesbian. The moniker appropriated to Anne Lister was an insult, although, in the film, she proudly wore it as a title of honor. For this reason, viewers waited tirelessly—but remained eager— for season two to arrive. The story behind the story is of great interest too. It appears that Lister, who began writing about her life and affairs—of every sort—started as early as 1806, and when finished, her diaries held nearly five million words! Intriguing, Lister wrote intimate details of her many lovers; but much of her entries were written in code.

The series follows Lister on her quests and adventures in running an estate, interacting with townspeople, elected officials, and, naturally, her lovers. But, we see a subtle shift in the main character when she meets Ann Walker, who is needy, and Lister sees that she can be influenced—at the beginning of their relationship. The storyline is spot on as it relates to facts in what has been called the “Dead Sea Scrolls of lesbian history.” Viewers learn that Lister was a social climber with a thirst for new wealth, partly due to her entrepreneurial spirit and desire for power and notoriety. Still, the affection one feels is of kindness and support, especially when the actress playing Lister looks at the viewer with wit or makes a comment about the scene—the connection is fantastic. The actors, landscapes, and setting are perfectly staged and recorded; the quality of the story and costumes shows the commitment of all involved. Season two has unfolded, and there is pressure for HBO to develop a third season quickly. I bet that it will be written and produced. Hopefully, the lapse between the last two seasons won’t be the same. Gentleman Jack is a “binge-watcher,” and it will be difficult, but not impossible to curb an appetite for more. Profile I N T R O D U C I N G

Lady Carnarvon OF HIGHCL ER E C A ST L E BY STEVE CHAN

W

ould Highclere Castle be recognizable if Julian Fellowes had not created the HBO phenomenon Downton Abbey? It is a question some ask— I certainly do—but have not found an answer. Regardless of a rhetorical question, fans are grateful for work by Fellowes, which has reacquainted us with history, introduced us to a sit-at-the-edge-of-your-seat drama, and binge-worthy entertainment. Controversial to some, what has been realized is that history should never be erased from our minds or ledgers. Some intriguing facts few know but will find interesting is that before filming the series, the English castle—hundreds of years old—was in decrepit shape, requiring significant repair. From what has been reported, Highclere’s structure was collapsing, at least 50 rooms on the upper levels were unusable, and the grounds needed attention. As owners of the massive property, Lady Fiona Carnarvon, the Eighth Countess of Carnarvon, and her husband, George Herbert, the Eighth Earl of Carnarvon, learned that making the necessary repairs would amount to more

42 | JULY 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

than $18 million; albeit a small investment in a home that has an approximate appraisal value of $95 million and worthy of preservation. To put the enormity of the project into perspective, the Preservation Society of Newport County shared this. “The house [Highclere Castle] has 300 rooms, compared to 70 at The Breakers. Its landscape is 5,000acres, compared to The Breakers’ 13.5, and includes numerous gardens and 18th century structures.” When Downton Abbey was being filmed at Highclere Castle, the film crew had to work around the estate’s residents—including Lord and Lady

Carnarvon and thousands of sheep and some very special pigs. “We have 1,800 ewes and 3,500 lambs—they stayed on the property the whole time during filming,” Lady Carnarvon told Town & Country magazine in 2019. “I recently also bought two rare English lop pigs, Thelma and Louise…of course, then the boar visited, and now we have 16 piglets.” Today, Lady Carnarvon organizes —basically oversees, many of the castle’s operations; she takes responsibility for the marketing and event management and is an accountant—a valuable profession when handling the mammoth task. At the same time, she shared that even as a “Lady,” she can be found in the gardens or feeding the animals. The couple, who spend considerable time entertaining guests as Highclere, live in a smaller home on the estate. Still, it takes an estimated 175-plus employees to maintain the status quo. Lady Carnarvon recently appeared as a special guest for a soiree at Rosecliff called “The Highclere Experience,” where she shared her experiences and wonderful stories and stressed the importance of her dedication and commitment to keeping history alive. Georgia O’Keeffe: Things I Had No Words For TO EXHIBIT AT THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM BY EMILY RANDOLPH

44 | JULY 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

A

rt lovers, rejoice! Newport, Rhode Island, has many claims to fame, and now it can further boast bringing American Modernist Georgia O’Keeffe’s work to Newport not once, but twice. The first time was in 1938, when, organized by MOMA, the Newport Art Museum staged an exhibition of American modern artists that included O’Keeffe, which was on view at the same time as a popular Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney show. Eighty-four years later, the Newport Art Museum’s Senior Curator, Dr. Francine Weiss, focuses the exhibition on O’Keeffe and her abstract work. Dr. Weiss has a

Lake George Reflection

broad background on O’Keeffe; she was a visiting scholar at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center and a doctoral candidate at Boston University. A great deal of her research was on American modernists. With the help of curatorial assistant Megan Horn, who vigorously researched the vast catalogues of information on O’Keeffe, Dr. Weiss curated the show from scratch with works from private collectors and other museums. Georgia O’Keeffe is one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. And while she is most known for her sensual and bold florals, as well as her southwestern landscapes influenced by her homes in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, it may be her abstract work that best expresses her true self.

The Newport Art Museum’s O’Keeffe exhibit displays abstract paintings, watercolors, and sculptures, including several prominent paintings; Dead Tree with Pink Hill, In the Patio IX, and the abstract sculpture Abstraction. All of O’Keeffe’s work appears contemporary and fresh today. Viewers will easily see how modern and contemporary artists of every ilk, from photographers to painters and sculptors, follow in her formidable footsteps. Initially, O’Keeffe was trained classically. Born on November 15, 1887, on a farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, she knew upon graduating from high school that she wanted to pursue a career as an artist. O’Keeffe studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Arts Students League in New York. But she changed her artistic direction dramatically after studying the ideas of Arthur Wesley Dow, a Massachusetts-born painter, curator, and art educator. Dow gave O’Keeffe an alternative viewpoint on art creation that inspired her to delve into the world of abstraction. Finally, she succeeded in creating a body of abstract charcoal work; these early works brought her to her future husband, art dealer, and photographer, Alfred Stieglitz, when a friend of O’Keeffe’s, Anita Pollitzer, showed them to him in 1915. Stieglitz gave O’Keeffe her first exhibit in 1916 and photographed and promoted her vigorously. “But, like many women artists,” says Weiss, “O’Keeffe was dismissed for many years as essentially feminine and as making feminine art.” Some consider O’Keeffe’s problem of becoming established, the result of her husband’s marketing of her talent in the early years; and perhaps, created subsequent dismissive interpretations of her work. Such positioning didn’t demonstrate O’Keeffe’s critical contribution to American art or Modernism. All the while, art historians, scholars, and curators slowly realized her importance. The exhibit will—without a doubt— share O’Keeffe’s contributions to a broader audience. Every work is compelling and will inspire visitors to consider

The abstraction is often the most definite form for the intangible in myself that I can only clarify in paint… I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way —things I had no words for. —Georgia O’Keeffe

expressing themselves artistically. “Georgia O’Keeffe: Things I Had No Words For,” celebrates O’Keeffe’s bold, colorful and unique style and approach to nature and landscape abstract work. She is credited for creating an original and noteworthy style that follows her abstraction journey and stems from O’Keeffe’s dreams and memories. O’Keeffe worked well into her nineties, although her eyesight was impaired by macular degeneration, and relied on assistants. She painted her last unassisted oil painting in 1972. Georgia O’Keeffe died in Santa Fe on March 6, 1986, at 98, but her work continues to inspire us all. SUMMER ART PARTY

The exhibition will be kicked off with the Newport Art Museum’s annual summer fundraiser, the Summer Art Party, on Friday, July 15, 2022. A tradition dating to 1927, the Summer Art Party is one of the most highly anticipated and lively cultural events of Newport’s summer season, attracting cultural and civic leaders, artists, collectors, philanthropists, and other artworld notables from across the country. H More information, as well as the opportunity to purchase tickets and tables, is available at newportartmuseum.org/ artparty. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | JULY 2022 | 45

The 2022 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance Exceeds Expectations

E

arlier in June, the automotive show everyone was talking about impressed the more than 8,000 people who made it to Greenwich Harbor to celebrate motoring and its culture. “We’re convinced more now than ever about the value of bringing the car community together. Whether our guests came to enjoy the fun cars of their youth on Saturday or to see the finest cars ever built on Sunday, it’s evident that car culture is both alive and thriving,” said Hagerty’s Matt Orendac, Vice Chairman, Concours Group. The weekend kicked into gear with the exclusive Grand Tour for Concours entrants. In a nod towards responsible motoring, the tour’s impact was offset and made climate positive, thanks to a partnership with Chrome Carbon. Friday evening featured the Hagerty Drivers Foundation’s unveiling of the 31st vehicle inducted into the National Historic Vehicle Register. The 1952 Hudson Hornet (7B-185596) “Fabulous Hudson Hornet,” raced by Herb Thomas, remained on display throughout the weekend. Saturday’s Cars & Community, presented by Griot’s Garage, featured RADwood and Concours d’Lemons displays and a Kids Zone. The event displayed 125 vehicles on the lawn at

Roger Sherman Baldwin Park. Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance celebrated 140 historically significant vehicles in 18 classes. Fifty-seven judges from across the globe selected a Vignalebodied 1948 Packard Convertible Victoria as Best in Show. More than 600 future drivers participated in the Kids Zone, enjoying racing simulators, games, coloring stations, and more. Experts mentored 15 youth as they selected vehicles from the Concours show field to receive Hagerty’s Youth Awards. Over 240 people participated in Hagerty’s Ride & Drive, which puts enthusiasts behind the wheel of cars. Test drive vehicles included a 1960 Plymouth Fury; a 1963 Lincoln Continental; a 1970 Dodge Challenger; and a 1971 Ford Bronco. In addition, a 2017 Ferrari 488 GTB and a 2017 Lamborghini Huracan Spyder were available. Hagerty’s support of local charities continues a long tradition of giving back to the community. A gift to the Greenwich Boys & Girls Club will provide summer program scholarships for local students, and Greenwich Parks and Recreation contributions will help underwrite their Summer Concert Series. The Concours was proud to collaborate with local charitable vendors, the Transportation Association of Greenwich (TAG), and Arch Street. H NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | JULY 2022 | 49

Living Well

THE OTHER SILENT SCOURGE STDS ARE STILL AROUND— PROTECT YOURSELF WITH THE FACTS BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.ED

O

ne of the oldest human afflictions, historians say sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be traced back to at least 1550 B.C. and the Old Testament. Often referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to include asymptomatic people, these bacteria, viruses, and parasites, haven’t been at the forefront of public health awareness, with the coronavirus capturing all the attention. Most research showed a steep drop in partnered sexual activity during the pandemic and a rise in individual sexual activity. As social distancing becomes a distant memory, however, there is a renewed energy and interest in getting back into the swing of things. SECRET EPIDEMIC

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. is no stranger to sexually transmitted infections. In 2018, an estimated 1 in 5 Americans had an STI on any given day, for a total of about 68 million infections. On top of those existing infections, there were 26 million new cases, nearly half of which were in teens and young adults aged 15-24.1 In the CDC’s analysis, HPV, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, and chlamydia made up 98 percent of all existing STIs and 98 percent of all new STI cases in 2018. “Given the serious health consequences of untreated STIs, and that many infections go undetected and unreported to CDC, these estimates are critical to better understanding the vast scope of the STI epidemic and who is most affected,” states the agency.1 52 | JULY 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Estimated STIs in the United States Youth and Adults Aged 15+ (2018) 1

Experts advise getting tested for STIs to ensure you and your partner are safe, though finding the motivation can often be difficult. Some are fearful of the potential impact on their relationship or the threat of discovering an incurable STI, like HIV. Others may think they’re in the clear because they don’t have symptoms. Yet, not getting screened can put a person at risk of spreading the infection to others, becoming infertile, jeopardizing a pregnancy, getting or spreading HIV, and a host of complications.3

ABOUT STIS AND THEIR COMPLICATIONS

STIs spread mainly through sexual contact in blood, semen, and vaginal or other bodily fluids. STIs can be insidious because they don’t always produce symptoms. A person can seem perfectly healthy and harbor an STI that they unwittingly pass on to another. Because of this, many STIs go unnoticed and unreported until a partner is diagnosed or adverse effects develop down the road.2 Vulvodynia (chronic pain around the vaginal opening), balanitis (inflammation of the foreskin and penis head from infection), and vaginitis could be added to the list of common STIs studied by the CDC above. However, given their overwhelming prevalence, it stands to reason that people should be most watchful of HPV, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, HIV, and gonorrhea. These and other STIs are described in depth by the CDC, Health and Human Services (HHS), Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic. HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a group of viruses that get in the skin or other moist areas and can result in warts lasting several days or weeks. These can be highly contagious genital warts or more common warts on other parts of the body. Once identified by a lab test or imaging, HPV can be treated with topical medication. It’s also preventable with a vaccine. HPV is common in people in their late teens and early 20s. HSV-2, or genital herpes, is caused by the herpes simplex type 2 virus and produces painful, itchy sores in the genital area lasting several days or weeks. The virus can be spread to other parts of the body if the sores or their fluids are touched. Genital herpes has no cure but is treatable. The disease is common in people 18-35; among Americans 14-49 years of age, more than one in six people are infected. Trichomoniasis, or “trich,” is the most prevalent non-viral STI worldwide. Though symptoms vary, about 70 percent of people infected with the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite don’t have symptoms and don’t know they have it. When they do appear, symptoms can run from mild irritation to severe inflammation in the genital region. Trich is easily curable with oral medication, but like other STIs, it can recur if a person has unprotected sex with someone that has trich. Chlamydia is a common bacterial STI mainly found in young women. Symptoms include genital pain, discharge, and painful urination, but many people experience nothing. Chlamydia is treatable with antibiotics that may be a single dose, a daily dose, or multiple daily doses are taken over 5-10 days. The infection typically clears in 1-2 weeks. Like other STIs, a person’s sexual partner should also be treated to prevent passing the infection back and forth. HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, damages white blood cells, making it harder for a person to fight infection. As the disease advances and fewer of these cells are in the blood, the immune system is weakened, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) can set in. If a person has an STI, they are more likely to get HIV or pass it to others. While there’s still no cure for HIV/AIDS, progress is being made, and treatment using antiretroviral therapy (ART) is available. Gonorrhea is a common, curable STI often occurring in people 54 | JULY 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Potential Complications of Untreated STIs 3 aged 15-24. Infection can occur in the genital region, rectum, and throat. Like other STIs, gonorrhea is spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It can also spread to a baby during childbirth. Gonorrhea often has no symptoms but can cause severe issues if untreated with antibiotics. When they do appear, symptoms could include an unusual sore, foul-smelling discharge, burning during urination, or bleeding between periods. Syphilis is a curable STI but can have serious complications if not treated with antibiotics. Syphilis is spread through contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex (not through contact with objects like toilet seats or doorknobs). It occurs in four stages; in the first stage, a single or multiple round, painless sores may appear in the genital, anal, or mouth region, followed by skin rashes on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet in the second stage; the third stage is a dormant period; the last stage can lead to internal organ damage and death. HBV, or hepatitis B virus, can cause symptoms after six weeks to six months from infection. Nearly half of adults with a new infection show symptoms, while about one percent of cases lead to liver failure and death. A common symptom is jaundice (yellowing) of the skin and sclera of the eyes. Though there is no cure for

HBV, the condition is manageable with treatment to prevent the virus from replicating and keep liver disease in remission. Vaccination and hepatitis B immune globulin can prevent infection.

PREVENTION

The CDC estimates that new STI cases in 2018 will cost the U.S. healthcare system some $16 billion. But the human impact is hidden in that number. At beintheknow.org, young people describe their experience with STIs and offer advice. Virginia, who contracted chlamydia, says she didn’t realize she had it and is now concerned she may also have HIV. “I am now 18 and regret losing my virginity. You don’t have to be promiscuous to contract an STD. It only takes one time. So if anyone considers having sex, I’m not against it because it’s a wonderful thing, but I would just advise that they use condoms no matter how much they know someone and trust them. Remember that same person probably trusted their previous loved ones and would have never suspected that they ever had a disease. So please, be safe and ’wrap it up’...really.” Abstinence from all sex (vaginal, anal, oral) is the best way to avoid any sexually transmitted infection. Short of that, vaccination is a safe, effective, and recommended method of preventing HBV and, for people aged 11-26, HPV. Other ways to prevent STIs are decreasing sexual partners, practicing mutual monogamy, and using condoms—correctly, consistently, and throughout the entire sex act (vaginal, anal, or oral).4 To prevent HIV, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication can be used for daily protection in high-risk individuals, as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in emergencies. A local PrEP provider can be found at preplocator.org. For PEP, antiretroviral drugs need to be started within 72 hours of exposure. People who believe they’ve been exposed to HIV should contact their provider or emergency room regarding PEP as soon as possible.5 States the CDC, “Many STDs can be easily diagnosed and treated. If either you or your partner is infected, both of you need to receive treatment at the same time to avoid getting re-infected.” 4 Choosing unfettered pleasures over these safety measures could expose a person and their partner(s) to a lifetime of regret. Style TRENDING IN MEN’S FASHION —

Classy, Smart Casual

G BY MARGOT ROBERTS

entlemen. Do you know what it means to be smartly dressed? Yes, we know the past couple of years have been difficult, and the daily routine has been to stay in your sleepwear—for days on end, but that is changing, and it’s time to dress to impress, or at least for yourself so that you can raise your level of self-esteem. All too often, men relinquished the concept of looking good and instead settle for a tee-shirt, over the knee—down to the shin shorts—topped off with those ridiculous wide-flat brim “trucker hats,” making many of us chuckle because of the resemblance to the cartoon character Charlie Brown. Just look around; these cringe-worthy outfits are often worn at events, restaurants, or social gatherings. What fuels optimism to those watching street style is that now we are getting out and matching up. Men’s summer fashion is trending towards relaxed, casual, and sharp— all of which translates to “Smart Wardrobes,” which appeals to those you might want to meet. Here is the code men should consider when shopping: – Look great and be comfortable; stock up on denim jeans; they’re still the rule of the day. Stay away from those torn or over-bleached relics; it’s the fit that matters. – Chinos also work, a bit more refined and dressier; they go with everything in the closet. – A broad selection of high-quality shirts; whites, solids, checks, and stripes; of course, they must be either crisp from the laundry or at least ironed. – Every man needs a selection of blazers, a couple of blue, and an assortment of other colors or patterns. They catalyze coordinating the whole look.

“They come runnin’ just as fast as they can ’Cause every girl crazy ’bout a sharp-dressed man.” “Sharp Dressed Man,” ZZ Top—1983

– Shoes. It is well known that women always take notice of a man’s shoes; they tell a story and indicate a great deal about their status. Tennis and boat shoes are always in style, but there is no reason you can’t explore something different. These looks work well day or evening. They command attention and offer respectability, and even if no one cares what you look like, you should always put your best foot forward and feel great that you made an effort!
