Welcome

DRIVING THE ARTS HOME R

ecently, we made a serendipitous discovery while attending a tour and press conference, a few days prior to the opening of Encore Boston Harbor Resort and Casino. It was late morning, when one of our writers and a photographer joined with others from the media, for an advanced look at Wynn Resorts’ new $2.6M hotel, casino, and entertainment venue in Everett, Massachusetts. Groups of about 10-12 journalists and associates were divided up and directed to join experienced Encore staff members. What went unnoticed was that public relations personnel was also assigned to accompany each entourage; a proactive strategy indeed. As the noon hour approached, our group happened to meet with the head chef of Rare Steakhouse. He provided a detailed presentation of the upscale restaurant’s objectives and explained how they are different than others who claim to serve the finest and hard to find beef products. In cementing his comments to our memories, he instructed his staff to serve decadent samples of Japanese Wagyu—Kobe beef, which appeared to cause a positive stir and significant change in the mood of the group. Guests began to open up and engage in conversation after samples of the menu were passed. As everyone began to relax, a young woman—the PR plant, (we say this in jest), began to show increasing interest in the restaurant and the tour; evidence that the group was succumbing to a less intense tenor. Extremely pleasant and artfully skilled in communication, she captivated the conversation with her interests in fine dining restaurants and resorts new to the northeast. The conversation was enlightening because at first, no one realized who she was or her position. As time went on, and as one would expect, discussions followed; who are you, what media group do you represent, and of course, what’s your impression of the property? It was at this point the small talk grew into something larger. 10 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

We learned that our new friend was not only with the PR firm for Encore, but that her mother (our newest client) was one of the resident artists who founded a premier art organization on the SouthCoast of Massachusetts. At first, it didn’t seem possible, since the chance of this coincidence was unrealistic; but it was true; Dartmouth resident and artist, Beverly Carter, along with artists—Sandra Hall and Deborah Quinn-Munson—created the Art drive. Celebrating its 12th year in delivering quality and curated works by regional artists, we were impressed and pleased to learn of this connection; it was mystifying at best, but the introduction gave us a different sense of how a grass-roots effort has grown and the role it plays in the communities they serve. This chance meeting and small talk turned out to be an added benefit of the day; it fueled our excitement for becoming a proponent of what is going to be a great experience in only a matter of a few days. We wish the Art drive its deserved success with their upcoming event. H For more information—keep turning the pages.

A

ugust is such a beautiful month; it’s usually drier than others that make up the summer season, and there are countless events and activities to keep us interested and motivated to try new experiences or to repeat the ones we love. It also reminds us that even though the summer of 2019 seems exceedingly short, we should plan to make the best of it since September is quickly approaching. August results in mixed emotional states; part of us is dreading that summer will be ending soon, while in our minds we know that there will be many long hot days and plenty to do on weekends after school begins. Perhaps it is because the beginning of the school session marks a change in the loose summer schedules we’ve come to enjoy; the combination of trying to manage the stress that comes with the start of classes and while trying to have a work-life balance can be overwhelming. The question seems to be, do we allow these distractions to ruin the rest of the season? Relish in the notion that each day is a gift. It doesn’t mean some aren’t better than others, but that we should appreciate our ability to get up and move, to plan an event that indulges us; embrace 12 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

our relationships with others, and to acknowledge that time passes quickly, and there isn’t an account for saving up days and experiences passed. Given that we need to pack a whole lot into this month, we’ve attempted to point you in a few directions, some you’re familiar with, and others that will open your eyes to new and less familiar activities. In a world filled with animosity and hostility, perhaps the prescription is a much-needed vacation from the news—this is where we come into play. Imagine, a month of enjoyment, meeting people with similar leisure interests, and having the ability to let down walls of isolation. We all know that it takes effort to remain tolerant and approach life with humility, but it is a better place. It’s time to bury the hatchet, practice the adage, “bygones,” and to consider what a barrel of discourse looks like—it’s not a pretty sight. We only get one ride around the track of life; why not make it as pleasant and as exhilarating as possible, and at the same time, teach the next generation how to avoid making the mistakes we’ve made; it’s time to get going, create positive energy and share it with others. Enjoy the day. H

CREATING CLIENT SATISFACTION AT YOUR LOCATION OR OURS

To produce exceptional commercial images—across all disciplines—your photographer needs redundancy of equipment, the finest cameras, stateof-the-art lighting, plenty of ancillary equipment, and “an eye” for capturing that magical shot. They’ll also have to be knowledgeable with: • Art Direction • Prop-Building • Product Styling • Set Direction • Lighting Techniques • Artist-Quality Post-Production Skills Of course, they need to offer location options, when the occasion demands, and be capable of setting up a portable studio at your site and shoot day or night to lighten any disruption of your business. Outdoor sessions shouldn’t be a hassle. If you need an off-site location, feel confident your products and staff will be safe and treated respectfully. Lucki Schotz provides outstanding quality, value, and has the reputation for meeting timetables and estimates. We start with an expectation and leave you with results well beyond your satisfaction. irst impressions are important when considering a primary residence, and most families would agree, a summer and holiday retreat also needs to exude a sense of excitement and personal style. Usually, a final choice will have been culled from a list of close approximations; some of which, reflect a family’s personality, their preference in a neighborhood, and most importantly, the acclamation to social amenities. Indeed, a new owner’s lifestyle is often a deciding

factor in the final choice when purchasing a new home. With this in mind, let’s examine what sets this featured home apart from others within the range of $1,495,000. The location is like no other; the home is on over a half acre, corner lot in the village of Padanaram, South Dartmouth; across the street from the New Bedford Yacht Club. The Club provides activities and events for all ages and has played an important role in many families over many decades. Fond memories continue to be made at the private marina and will be worth closer inspection. The quietness of the area offers a sense of exclusivity and peacefulness within a

friendly community composed of yearround residents and those who summer on the coast. Not far from the home’s threshold is Elm Street intersected by Bridge Street. Both avenues have been extensively renovated, and the makeover has everyone in awe over its new and magnificent curb appeal. The slightly elevated Colonial-style residence is stately, yet inconspicuous. It is protected by a short, but tasteful wall and privacy fence. Further complementing the grounds are the beautiful groves of mature hardwoods, garden landscape, and a rich green lawn surrounding the perimeter and leading to the hidden brick patio off the great room. The estate offers a feeling of seclusion without isolation and a sense of belonging due to its place along the harbor’s shoreline and easy access to the many shops and restaurants nearby. 26 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

The home’s greatness offers an open floor plan with a gourmet-style kitchen and vaulted ceiling. The family room has a balcony and a fireplace. There is also a nook, perfect for any form of activity or interest to family members and guests. The expansive formal dining room is perfect for multi-generational gatherings or entertaining, and the front to back formal living room—with fireplace, is perfect for all social activities. A fourseason sunroom will be a favorite spot to read, withdraw for a quiet breakfast, or a peaceful afternoon cocktail. There is a large two car garage with an adjacent expansive mudroom and half bath. The mudroom provides enough storage for items necessary for a day of sailing or going to one of the many beaches minutes away. Views of the harbor can be seen throughout the multitude of windows that face the ocean and provide pleasant

and gentle breezes to pass through, day or night. The second level offers a wonderfully appointed master suite with views, an updated bath, and a large walk-in closet. There are three additional bedrooms with individual baths and a bonus room for a perfect home office. Contemporary homes are unable to provide the innate character found in this month’s feature property, while many classical homes have not often been sufficiently updated. 189 Elm Street is the best of all worlds and is waiting for your good taste and great ideas as you turn it into your next residence. OCO’s, (SouthCoast’s), regional summer multistudio art exhibition and creative discovery-tour, will again exceed visitors and collector’s expectations when studio doors swing open to aficionados and the curious this month. The well-known and vastly anticipated, the Art drive, is an open-studio event— now in its 12th year of operation. This one-of-a-kind tour and viewing of how artists create and find inspiration was organically founded, and continues to be produced, by professional artists and talented markers in the Dartmouth and Westport areas.

Scheduled to span over three continuous days, (August 9, 10 & 11, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.), the summer studio showcase will include artists, jewelers, photographers, wood and metal workers along with other professional creators who allow the public a peek into how and where the coastal region’s most talented artists perform their work.

BEVERLY CARTER

JANICE KISSINGER

Member artists of the Art drive contribute well beyond the sale of prestigious works of art, gifts, and collectibles; they also educate consumers in the process of creativity and involve the public in their inspiration and how to take that all-important first step. With demand for this type of art-programming, the group is committed to positively impact their local economy by drawing visitors and tourists to the towns, villages, and backroads that make this experience so appealing and well attended. A juried studio tour, (making this a step above those uncurated),

the expedition offers a specialized opportunity and experience for those interested in exploring what goes on behind the scenes. Artists will be creating and designing new pieces, or a whole collection of work that will likely be sold in New England’s finest galleries, if those who have first dibs on them hesitate. The many locations where creators work is within the peaceful, yet dramatic settings of the picturesque coast. Sprinkled near the water, in meadows of the farms, or placed within the historic villages of Dartmouth and Westport, every stop becomes an enchanted journey. An annual event for travelers and locals who claim that it is the perfect weekend to escape the usual retail experiences found along crowded main streets; it offers a different type of entertainment for everyone in the family. Easily navigated, the 15-mile stretch of studios, beaches, boating, and eating, makes this three-day event a remarkable art-related vacation, whether it is for the day or the entire weekend. This year the Art drive will include 31 artists working in all mediums. The Preview show will be held at the Dartmouth Cultural Center; 404 Elm Street, in South Dartmouth. With the new and improved Village of Padanaram, this event will surely be the best one of all. H For details and locations, contact the-art-drive.com.

f you’re not familiar with Rhode Island’s most important, intimate, and exploratory theater, then stay tuned for insight into their recent adventure. For about 15 years the Gamm Theatre was housed in a temporary home at the Pawtucket Armory. Due to the company’s growth and need to expand its creative height, the administration sought a new location that would meet fiscal challenges, while fitting into its space requirements.

It happened; just when it seemed nearly impossible to find a suitable relocation, an old theater in Warwick became available and fit the bill. Without many alterations, the existing performance site was renovated, so that artists and guests could still enjoy the cozy and up-close experiences the Gamm is known to offer. Their first season in a permanent home was Season 34 (2018-2019).

aligned with current issues and an old favorite. Gamm’s seating is similar in style to the old space but offers 20-30 additional and flexible seats, and the performance area is noticeably larger. The proscenium (the vertical plane of the stage) is larger and adds around 30 square feet to the dedicated backstage area, a dedicated wing space, portable lighting and sound booth, and a stateof-the-art rigging system. According to a press release by the Gamm, for the first time, the Gamm’s designers and production team will have a full array of artistic resources to bring new imaginative worlds to the stage. With an innovative and flexible design, the stage will be able to shift from partial thrust to a full Shakespearean courtyard or an in-the-round stage. Another pleasant add-on for ticket holders is the 110 parking spaces, including seven specially permitted for those with physical challenges.

SAME OLD-SAME OLD—NOT

WHAT’S ON TAP?

The Gamm has always led with a mission of community involvement and education, but not at the expense of lowering the bar of creativity and performance excellence. The group’s programs moved with the physical plant, and for the 2019-2020 season, the company will produce six productions

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Tony Estrella, season 35 begins with the production, A Doll’s House, Part 2 by Lucas Hnath. It’s been 15 years since Norwegian housewife Nora Helmer slammed the door on her husband, three children and the rest of married life in Ibsen’s sober 19th-century drama. Now

she’s back in Hnath’s darkly comic Broadway darling. In her new life as an incendiary feminist writer, Nora is being blackmailed by a judge and needs her estranged husband’s help. Sherri Rosen-Mason, head of the admissions department at a New England prep school, is intent on diversifying the student body. Alongside her husband, the onsite spa school’s headmaster, she’s been largely successful. But when the couple’s only son sets his sights on an Ivy League university,

progressive values and self-interest collide with shocking results. This biting comedy-drama by the author of Bad Jews and Significant Other explodes the ideals and contradictions of “liberal” white America. January 16 – February 9. Sure to stir controversy is the stage event, Assassins, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by John Weidman. The nation’s most notoriously successful and wouldbe presidential assassins inspire each other to dreadful acts in this Tony Award-winning sensation. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Sondheim’s revue-style exposé bends time and space to reveal the underbelly of the American dream and the country’s culture of celebrity. Don’t miss this audacious and alarmingly funny experience. March 5 – 29.

To end the season, the Gamm takes on the task of illuminating a difficult story to tell in, Mary Jane, by Amy Herzog. From her apartment in Queens, Mary Jane navigates both the mundane and the unfathomable realities of caring for her chronically ill two-year-old son. Immersed in a world of medicines and feeding tubes, the unflinchingly optimistic single mom finds herself building a community of women from many walks of life. From the author of 4000 Miles (Pulitzer Prize finalist) and After the Revolution (Gamm 2012), Herzog’s beautifully unsentimental play is a tribute to a mother’s unconditional love and the power of empathy. We hope it provides an opportunity for healing and educational experience for the whole community on the impact of the Vietnam War on America.

T

his month is the time for a very special remembrance for the thousands of men and women who served during the Vietnam era. It will be a solemn occasion for the many who lost a friend, family member, or loved one during the war. On August 22-25, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Replica Wall and Mobile Education Center will arrive and be placed at Bellingham High School on Blackstone Street. The hope is to spread a healing legacy and to share the impact the Vietnam War has had on our country and the brave souls who fought. The memo-rial will be open 24 hours a day, and free to the public. The Wall That Heals is a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall located in Washington D.C. and honors the more than three million Americans who served in the US Armed forces in the war while bearing the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate 36 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

sacrifice in Vietnam. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, also know as The Wall, is one of the most visited monuments in our nation’s capital. With more than 5.3 million visitors each year, many Americans still have not been able to visit. As a tribute, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), the organization that built The Wall in 1982, allows all veterans and their family members to experience the essence of the famous Memorial. “VVMF is pleased to bring The Wall That Heals mobile exhibit to Bellingham to allow local veterans and their family members a chance to visit [The Wall] and honor and remember those who have served and sacrificed,” said Jim Knotts, president, and CEO of VVMF. “We hope

it provides an opportunity for healing and educational experience for the whole community on the impact of the Vietnam War on America.” Nearly 400,000 people visited an all-new The Wall That Heals exhibit in 2018, and since its debut in 1996; the exhibit has been on display in more than 500 US communities. In April 1999 it was in the Four Provinces of Ireland and visited Canada in 2005. The threequarter-scale replica is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point. Due to its size, visitors can experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a key feature of the original design. The Wall That Heals is erected in a chevron-shape and visitors can do name rubbings of individual service member’s

names. Each service person is listed in order of date of casualty and alphabetically on each day. Beginning at the center or apex of the wall, the list of names start on the east wing (right-hand side) and work their way out to the end; then pick up again at the far end of the west wing, (lefthand side) and work their way back into the center. The first and last casualties are side by side at the apex of the Memorial. The replica is constructed of Avonite, a synthetic granite, hoisted on 144 individual panels, supported by an aluminum frame. Modern LED lighting from the top of The Wall provides readability of The Wall at night. The Wall That Heals is transported in a 53-foot trailer. Once parked, the trailer opens into an exhibit built into its sides, serving as a mobile education center. The mobile education center displays include digital photo displays of “Hometown Heroes” service members whose names are on The Wall. It lists their home of record, within the area of a visit and a digital photo displays Vietnam veterans from the local area.

The In Memory program also honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died as a result of their service; video displays teach about the history and impact of The Wall and the collection of items representative of those left at The Wall in D.C. A map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War tell the story and recount its toll. The Wall and the era surrounding the conflict puts the American experiences in Vietnam into a historical and cultural context. VOICES OF HEALING

Two of a Kind Crooners, the singing brothers—both UMASS-Dartmouth students—have mesmerized audiences far and wide have been officially invited to perform on August 23, during The Wall That Heals event. Robbie and Joseph Oliver are from Bellingham, but the duet has toured well outside the town’s borders. Their popularity is due to the combination of Joseph’s powerful low baritone and Robbie’s high baritone and wide range of fine falsetto. Adding to the pleasure of

watching and listening to the brothers is seeing how these young men are shining examples of today’s youth. Excellent students and good citizens, their genuine love for their music, and each other is a shining example of good principals and values. You may have noticed the Two of a Kind Crooners, by the T-Shirts they sometimes wear, (Robbie designed them with the words Real Men Sing, including a caricature of singer Pavarotti), or the melodies that richly flow from them at the many events they are requested to attend. The duo’s playlist includes patriotic songs, and on the web you can view videos of them performing favorites like; Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog and Devil in Disguise, Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy, All I Have to Do Is Dream, (made famous by the Everly Brothers), Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Sh-Boom (life could be a dream), just to name a few tunes in their repertoire. The brothers will begin their set on August 23 at the baseball field, and should not be missed. H

hrough a long history of successes—the BLO proclaims the title as the largest and longest-lived opera company in New England. It is the BLO who gives voice to a specialized form of theater and music; not to be confused with music-theater; a point sometimes misunderstood, albeit less appreciated. Through innovation and creative forethought, the organization has become known as one of the most interesting and desirable music production company in the 40 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

world. The group’s unique programming and engagement with outside communities, has captured the attention and appreciation of all ages by way of its user-friendly opera-experiences. Founded in 1976, the company has staged world and US premieres, co-productions and co-commissions of note, with organizations such as The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, the Scottish Opera and the San Francisco Opera. With such highly acclaimed credentials, it’s no wonder this forward thinking opera company is attracting multi-disciplined talent from around the globe. For those unfamiliar or cloistered from the depth, form and function of this musical expression, they are only an aria

from learning about the historical and emotional characterizations, and melodic style of vocals singularly associated with this type of performance. The structure and attraction of the Boston-based opera company come from the leadership of Stanford Calderwood General & Artistic Director Esther Nelson. Under Nelson’s direction, the BLO is making great strides in opening its doors to new audiences; through an expanding repertoire of works, inclusive to new members, she recognizes this group’s search for a station to board the artistic journey opera offers. The Artistic Director’s guidance and management in business related matters has translated to secure financial footing,

rave reviews, and sell-out performance which is a measure of success for both the BLO and Nelson’s vision. It’s estimated that some 25,000 people enjoyed BLO performances last year and with partnerships of other organizations vital to the cultural landscape of Boston, like the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Boston Public Library, a diverse and faithful audience will continue to grow. The 2019/2020 season will span threecenturies of composers; the theme of power and politics are intended to stir passion and interest in new neighborhoods and with a new audience. Artists, coming from diverse backgrounds, will guide us through a new prism of musical entertainment.

The BLO’s season opens with Ruggiero Leoncavallo’s indelible Pagliacci, starring Mexico-born tenor Rafael Rojas as Canio and his murderous circus clown alter-ego of the title. African American soprano Lauren Michelle, an alumna of Walnut Hill School in Natick, Mass., and a finalist in 2015’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World contest, plays Nedda. Tobias Greenhalgh sings the role of Silvio, Nedda’s lover. Michael Mayes (2016’s Carmen and 2014’s Rigoletto) returns as Tonio. BLO’s emerging artist, alumnus Omar Najmi sings Beppe-Harlequin. BLO Music Director David Angus conducts. Pagliacci, written in 1892, will be sung in English and Italian. David Lefkowich directs the opera and the complete immersive experience, with food, music, and acrobats, mirroring the carnival atmosphere that sets the storyline in motion. Local community choruses and singers (plus on-site audience members) will be tapped to participate in the event and the performance alongside BLO’s professional chorus.

“Pagliacci is a quintessential opera… and I’m delighted to produce it for the first time at BLO,” Nelson says. “The music is direct and filled with sweeping melodic passion. At its heart is a jealous, abusive husband driven to murder his unfaithful young wife. But the dramatic backdrop is far more complex, frequently blurring the line between acting and reality. It is a perfect opera to bring together and celebrate our community partnerships. Rafael Rojas and Lauren Michelle will bring chemistry and excitement to our stage as the doomed couple.” FELLOW TRAVELERS NOVEMBER 13 – 17 at the Emerson Paramount Center

BLO’s deep bench of emerging artists is featured with returning artist Jesse Blumberg in the New England premiere of composer Gregory Spears and librettist Greg Pierce’s 2016 opera Fellow Travelers. This taut political thriller is based on Thomas Mallon’s 2007 historical novel of faith, love, and politics during the McCarthy era when homosexuals were blackmailed and purged from US government positions. In the shadow of 1950’s anti-Communist hysteria, powerful state department Executive Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller seduces Washington, DC transplant Timothy Laughlin, sparking a furtive romance after securing him a NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | AUGUST 2019 | 41

speechwriting job. Hawkins’ circle of friends and colleagues may—or may not—be keeping his secret from the prying eyes of the House Un-American Activities Committee. Fellow Travelers will be directed by Minnesota-based Peter Rothstein, artistic director of Theater Latte Da, whose own docu-musical All is Calm, made its off-Broadway debut last year. San Francisco-based conductor Emily Senturia leads the BLO orchestra. BLO’s 2018 Principal Artist in Residence Jesse Darden (2018’s Schoenberg In Hollywood) stars as Timothy alongside Jesse Blumberg (2017’s Burke & Hare) as Hawk. James Maddalena (seen most recently in 2017’s Tosca and 2018’s The Threepenny Opera) sings several roles including a senator, a general and a bartender. Emerging artist alumni cast members include Chelsea Basler, Vincent Turregano, David McFerrin, Simon Dyer, and Michelle Trainor. “Fellow Travelers is a love story set in a troubling time of 42 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

American history,” Nelson says. “In the name of national security and against socalled ‘anti-American activities,’ American lives were needlessly ruined, and promising careers were ended.” NORMA MARCH 13 – 22 at Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre

Russia-born soprano Elena Stikhina made her American debut in Boston Lyric Opera’s 2017 Tosca and a critically lauded Metropolitan Opera debut late last year in Puccini’s Il Trittico. This season she makes her role debut at BLO as the title character in Vincenzo Bellini’s 1831 bel canto opera, Norma, best known for its popular aria “Casta Diva (Chaste Goddess).” Set in first-century B.C. Gaul, the story recounts a love triangle between Norma, a high priestess of the Druids, Pollione a highranking Roman official, and Adalgisa, a

Druid temple virgin whom Pollione takes as a lover. Against the background of a civil uprising that she instigates, Norma works to convince Pollione to leave Adalgisa and return to her. The notoriously challenging title role has been sung by many great voices including Maria Callas, Dame Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé, Renata Scotto and Beverly Sills (in the Opera Company of Boston’s 1971 production under Sarah Caldwell). African American bass-baritone Alfred Walker (seen in BLO’s 2013 The Flying Dutchman and recently named to play Crown in the Metropolitan Opera’s 2019/2020 production of Porgy and Bess) returns to BLO as Norma’s father, Oroveso. Jonathan Burton (BLO’s 2017 Tosca) returns as Pollione, and BLO favorite Sandra Piques-Eddy (Werther, 2016 and Katya Kabanova, 2015) returns as Adalgisa. Stephanie Havey (Assistant Director for BLO’s 2014 Rigoletto) returns

as Stage Director. Music Director David Angus will lead the BLO Orchestra. “Bellini’s long melodies and hypnotizing musical phrases, which so directly articulate the unfolding dramatic events, are as alluring today as they were nearly 190 years ago,” says Nelson. “The story has plenty to say about the abuse of power. But the headline here, as throughout the season, is the singers. Elena Stikhina will be electrifying in this role.” GIULIO CESARE MAY 8 – 17 location to be announced

G. F. Handel’s 1760 work Giulio Cesare, BLO’s first Baroque opera since 2011’s Agrippina, closes the 2019/20 Season in a production directed by Matthew Ozawa. With a libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym, this opera, like Norma, takes its story from first-century B.C. Rome—this

time by way of Egypt with Caesar’s and Cleopatra’s entangled love story. The work is conducted by Gary Thor Wedow, a Baroque music master with a historically informed style heard previously in BLO’s Agrippina, who leads the BLO orchestra, which will include period instruments. Canadian counter-tenor David Trudgen (BLO’s 2010 Agrippina)—also well-versed in the Handel repertoire—sings the title role. Boston native and New England Conservatory graduate Jacquelyn Stucker, whose vibrant European career includes a recent two-year engagement with the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, sings Cleopatra. Making his BLO debut is South Korean counter-tenor Siman Chung as boy-king Tolomeo. Canada’s Wallis Giunta, winner of 2018’s International Opera Awards “Young Singer of the Year” award, makes her Boston debut singing en travesti as Sesto Pompeo. Emerging Artist alumnus Simon Dyer (2017’s The Rake’s

Progress) and David McFerrin (2018’s Burke & Hare and the current The Rape of Lucretia) return to the company singing General Curio and Achilla, respectively. Renee Tatum (2018’s The Threepenny Opera) is Cornelia. “Giulio Cesare is based loosely on Caesar’s fateful meeting in Egypt with the rebellious Cleopatra,” Nelson says. “What evolves is one of the most entertaining examples of opera aria, with larger-thanlife characters performing some of the genre’s most passionate, intoxicating, mischievous, and majestic arias that narrate the love story of Caesar and Cleopatra. These roles demand singers with extraordinary vocal capabilities and our cast will excel in them, especially under the baton of Gary Wedow.” H For additional information or tickets, visit BLO.org or call 617.542.6772.

Maritime Auction Held at the International Yacht Restoration School— Newport RI Guernsey’s of New York City Presides Over Memorable Sale

BY JAMES HOLDEN

O

n July 19 & 20, the Guernsey auction house of NYC held an exciting maritime-themed auction at Newport’s International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS). With a focus on majestic ocean liners, magnificent sailing vessels, nautical furnishings, and historical artifacts; the company before the event reported that many of the lots came from the archives of the IYRS. Bidders were treated to troves of treasures from many important and private collections which included items from the famed maritime author, Mark D. Warren, the Sam Taylor, and George McMath collections. Some of the most noted museum-quality pieces—with provenance—as once belonging to wreck diver, Bart Malone. But what drew greatest attention to the auction was the now-famous, Ella White’s walking stick. What made this such a curiosity, is that White survived the Titanic disaster, (April 15, 1912), and during that ill-fated evening, she climbed into a lifeboat—stick in hand—and with its illuminated crown of bakelite, (with a battery operated beacon), she “fiercely” waved the cane in an attempt to signal rescue ships to the shipwreck. Accounts after her survival reported that White was a star witness in court hearings that followed and that newspapers retold her story of the illuminated cane many times over. Two points which added excitement to the auction; first, the cane is perhaps the most significant item returned from the ship-sinking of that evening, followed by the news of the walking stick making it to auction—with an estimated selling 50 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

price of $300,000-$500,000. Then almost immediately, after the announcment, another descendant of White, Samuel Hoving, questioned proper ownership of the cane. He was quoted as saying the stick had been in his father’s possession for [many] years and suddenly vanished. He went on to say that it was in his father’s umbrella stand in New York and was noticed missing sometime during the ’70s. Upon learning of the cane’s fate, he claimed that he would, “…protest the auction and contest it and try to halt [the] sale.” However, days later, Hoving’s legal counsel agreed not to interfere with the auction and said they would work out the ownership and survivor rights after the sale; perhaps there will be more headlines to follow. Also sold were items from other noteworthy ships including; the Lusitania, the SS United States, and the ill-fated Andrea Doria. Treasure from the White Star Line to the nuclear-powered Savannah, and the Empress of Ireland. Rare posters, menus and ships’ logs constituted some of the most interesting ephemera in the event, while beautiful oil paintings by such luminaries as James Buttersworth and Antonio Jacobsen brought aggressive bidding. Historic treasures recovered by Mel Fisher from the shipwrecks of the Atocha and the Santa Margarita were among the oldest items sold during the two-day event. All in all, it turned out to be one of the more interesting auctions of recent memory. Controversy will assure this auction remains memorable ; something Guernsey’s is well-recognized for achieving with all their sales. H

living well

A HEAVY QUESTION WITHOUT A CLEAR ANSWER

BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, MED

Should the elderly be assisted in ending their lives? t’s trending among older people worldwide, whether terminally ill or in good health. In a high-profile case last spring, a still healthy 104-yearold scientist David Goodall of Australia had to travel to a tranquil Swiss clinic surrounded by botanical gardens to end his life. He was disenchanted that Australia’s new assisted suicide legislation only covers the terminally ill.1 Lifecircle clinic charged Goodall the rough equivalent of $10,000 for this once in a lifetime opportunity. In similar news, a 75-year-old Florida man admitted in a suicide note to killing his wife who had Alzheimer’s and burying her in the yard. In West Delhi, India, an older man, ended his life by jumping in front of a train. And a six-month investigation by Kaiser Health News and PBS News Hour found that “older Americans are quietly killing themselves in nursing homes, assisted living centers and adult care homes,” as through self-starvation, dehydration and supposed accidents.2-4 It may surprise some that older Americans account for 18 percent of all suicide deaths in the US, while a possible 40 percent or more cases are believed to go underreported. The elderly in America is the fastest growing demographic; it is also a major public health concern.5 WHY WE DO IT

Not surprising are the reasons why many older people around the world are choosing to end their lives. In the Netherlands, there is much controversy over whether those over 70 who are tired of life can have the legal option of asking for help in ending their lives. To an attempt to explore the etiology of the subject, researchers took a unique look at actual experiences of the physically healthy elderly who feel “life is completed and no longer worth living.”6 Though a small sample, they 56 | AUGUST 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

discovered from 25 in-depth interviews that the feeling could be mainly understood as “a tangle of inability and unwillingness to connect to one’s actual life,” a daily conflict between what “is and ought.” The lives of the interviewees are one of “permanently lived tension” where everyday experiences feel contrary to life expectations and how they view themselves. This only makes them feel more disconnected and solidifies their desire to end life. The researchers were able to categorize interviewee experiences into five areas of suffering: 1) a feeling of “aching loneliness,” 2) the “pain of not mattering,” 3) an inability of self-expression, 4) feeling tired on many levels, and 5) the fear of becoming dependent. As Dr. Goodall’s quality of life gradually deteriorated, he had considered suicide for the past 20 years and made three previous solo attempts. He cites the loss of mobility as one of the reasons for wanting to end his life, using a wheelchair before this death. The tipping point for seeking outside assistance seemed to be a fall in his small apartment that left him languishing on the floor for two days. SHIFTING ATTITUDES

Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) is catching on in the US. with states given the power to decide, the practice has become law in California; Colorado; the District of Columbia; Hawaii; Montana (currently under dispute, though made legal in 2009); New Jersey (beginning August 1, 2019); Oregon; Vermont; and Washington. Deathwithdignity.org is a Portland-based national nonprofit that advocates for death with dignity laws based on the model of the Oregon Death with Dignity Act, aiming to offer dying people an option and to foster nationwide changes in end-of-life care. “To die with dignity” as an end-of-life option means qualifying people can voluntarily and legally obtain prescription medication “to hasten their death in a peaceful, humane, and dignified manner.”7

To qualify, a person must be at least 18 years of age; reside in one of the aforementioned areas; be of sound mind and able to make/communicate healthcare decisions; and be diagnosed with a terminal illness that, according to “reasonable medical judgment,” will end the person’s life within six months.8 For those without a terminal illness, there exist groups like Australia-based Exit International (EI). With over 30,000 members worldwide, EI is distinct in the “right to die” movement in that it upholds a human rights, non-medical approach to the individual determination of how and when death will occur. According to EI, death is not a medical process, so a doctor isn’t necessarily needed. The average age of its members is 75—the vast majority of which healthy.9 As did Goodall, many believe the option to die should be freely available through a doctor’s prescription. States EI, “We believe it is a fundamental human right for every adult of sound mind to be able to plan for the end of their life in a way that is reliable, peaceful and at a time of their choosing.” Gallup polls show a gradual rise in favor of PAS by Americans since 1950 when less than 40 percent approved of the option for terminally ill people. Since 1990, support hasn’t fallen below 64 percent and has been as high as 75 percent in 1997. As of 2018, the number was 72 percent in favor.10 But while most Americans support a person’s right to die, Gallup found just 54 percent believe doctor-assisted suicide is moral.10 ETHICALITY

The debate surrounding PAS centers on four arguments.11 First, opponents say legalizing PAS isn’t necessary with the availability of hospice and palliative care; instead, the focus should be on improving access to such care. PAS supporters point to recent data from Oregon showing that 93 percent of people opting for PAS was already in hospice. Second, PAS does not conform to the right to die/control our destiny legal ruling because it is not completely autonomous. Proponents counter that physicians have the right to opt-out under the Bouvia v. Superior Court (CA) judgment. Third, PAS could result in a cheapening of human life where “mercy killing,” or euthanasia, isn’t far behind for anyone deemed undesirable: the elderly, homeless, handicap, mentally ill, etc. Advocates (naively) say civilized societies wouldn’t allow this and point to defeated despots like Hitler. Lastly, while opponents say PAS is a violation of the Hippocratic Oath to “first, do no harm,” those in favor say this promise is subject to case-by-case interpretation. An overarching question: are we usurping God by sanctioning suicide? Morality becomes even murkier with healthy elderly desiring to end their lives. David Goodall didn’t believe in an afterlife and appeared to harbor no apprehension about leaving earth. His family said he wanted to die on his terms and thought he made a brave, rational decision. Of course, it’s easy for people half Goodall’s age to point their

moral finger in condemnation. But consider that experts say most of us will die protracted deaths from chronic illness, with many insurers refusing possible life-extending treatments that fall outside the bounds of what is “generally accepted by the medical community” (example, new methods of treating diabetes and cancer).12 Like David Goodall, this can leave us without mobility and independence. HOPE FOR THE LIVING

For those who don’t believe we have the spiritual authority to take our own lives, it is right to try to help vulnerable individuals change their thinking concerning suicide. A person becomes more at risk with each decade over age 65, with divorced white males at the highest risk. Warning signs include, for example, loss of interest in favorite activities; reduced social interaction, self-care (medicines, diet, etc.) and grooming; having experienced or anticipating a significant personal loss; feeling hopeless and of no value; getting own affairs in order, giving things away; preoccupation with death; and, most importantly, expression of suicidal intent.5 The Netherlands study indicates that death wish in the elderly is more nuanced than the common assumption of being borne of rational thought. All people yearn to feel connected, to matter, and to maintain as much independence as possible. Helpful actions might include mental health therapy; changes in social circumstances and relationships; and physical measures to help improve quality of life, such as fall prevention through strength and functional/mobility exercise—essential to offsetting the loss of bone, muscle, coordination and balance from aging and inactivity (and can be done in a social/group setting). While it may be unrealistic to change a youth-obsessed culture that disregards its elderly, we can do what we can to make their days safer and more meaningful. H 1. Thompson, P. & Malm, S. Pain

RUNS THE R EL ATIONSHIP

R

omantic partners intend to love each other throughout the life of their relationship or marriage. The love will last long if their problems are regularly solved. However, the problems that do develop are usually the most persistent and can be contributed to the partners’ greatest weaknesses. Problems develop from pain too. When a partner habitually avoids something due to discomfort, (washing dishes, for instance), the avoidance will anger and frustrate the other partner. As is the case with most couples, layer upon layer of unsolved problems accumulate so that determining which action is triggering a particular problem becomes difficult to figure out. When a problem remains unsolved, it causes pain. It’s in such instances the couple’s pain runs the relationship. Most couples wish for and intend for their love to run the relationship. When their actions express love, partners feel connected and nourished, and life is good and easy. Some are tricked by this illusion; they believe that maintaining the relationship will be easy. When problems

remain unresolved due to a combination of blindness, weakness, and holding onto resentment, the relationship and desired intimacy can feel impossibly complex. The pain will always precede love the way incompleteness always comes before completeness. Each partner pulls or pushes for his or her needs to be met; but, when needs go unsatisfied, pain often results. The pain causes partners to close the gates to receive love until they feel some level of personal satisfaction. Fulfilling a partner’s needs demonstrates that the other is important. Each problem pulls for a solution and will continue to persist until a resolution is achieved. Much like a river that will continuously put pressure on a dam until it is overflowed, pain pressures the relationship. In another example, imagine a wall made up of jagged rocks. Each paingenerating unsolved problem is like a rock being placed into the wall. The fortress is continuously being built as unsolved problems accumulate, causing partners to become separated. At the beginning of a relationship, the emotional wall is low, and communication is only slightly strained. But, as time passes and problems become unsolved, the height begins to grow, and partners not only lose sight, but they don’t ever seem to see eye to eye on anything. When the wall is high, the household

BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

is inhabited by roommates. They may function as a team but are no longer emotionally connected as friends and lovers. The partners cannot reconnect so long as the wall separates them, and in this way, the pain runs the relationship. Problems coalesce so that no problem is distinct; collectively, it has become a large singular morass of pain. Living in this environment where any move may spark an argument; partners question if they are right for each other, by internally asking, “Did I make the wrong choice in choosing this partner?” Arguments include threats to end the relationship. Again, pain is running the relationship. All is not hopeless. It takes someone from the outside of the relationship to distinguish the difficulty, isolate it, and guide the partners in problem-solving. Even seemingly impossible problems have solutions, which may only be identified after a paradigm shift is forced by a crisis. Problem by problem, rock by rock, the wall of division may be dismantled to diminish the pain. When the remaining pain is small, it is powerless to influence the couple. Only then can love alone run the relationship, and life turn positive. H Andrew Aaron, LICSW is a sex and relationship therapist who practices in the New Bedford Seaport.
