IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER WE RECALL THE EVENTS OF 9/11

O

n September 11, 2001, 19 Islamic extremists from Saudi Arabia and various other Arab nations carried out one of the most horrific terrorist events in American history; but, worse, it took place on our soil. Bankrolled by Al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, the attack on our country using four hijacked airplanes left everyone wondering if we would ever be safe. Two of the fuel-ladened planes dove into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Another hit the Pentagon, with the final one missing a target because of the bravery of the passengers; it crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In the final analysis, nearly 3,000 citizens were killed, countless others were left to suffer long-term health issues—including death, with unfathomable damage to buildings, plus the loss of billions of dollars to businesses around the globe. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the attack on our country and personal freedom. Over time, there have been many willing to cast doubt on America and its continued on page 20

wo Pavillion Way, located on the banks of a waterway embedded in history, has to be one of the most charming and illustrious homes ever to be featured on these pages. Nature’s amenities improve this fine location with wildlife prancing on its 9+ acres in the early morning hours, nesting birds circling, diving, and playing throughout the day, along with an indulgent koi pond—complete with a bridge, and waterfalls, stocked with the finest specimens possible. For those interested in finding a special connection with conservation and lifestyle, this month’s featured home is worth a look. The custom contemporary is located off the tranquil Sconticut Neck Road and found down an impressive lane gently climbing to a point where the view of the ocean and the home make for a picture-perfect image of quality living. The location of the property, accompanied by the appeal of the home’s design and construction, easily surpasses all others at this level of refined living. No expense was spared on the steel frame structure, securely sitting upon concrete pillars supporting a magnificent wrap-around mahogany deck offering panoramic water views from all angles. Of course, with its elevation, the impressive space is perfect for entertaining,

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2021 | 17

enjoying breakfast, or relaxing with an afternoon cocktail. Few homes offer the luxury of a private beach, surrounded by a finely manicured lawn and gardens, accompanied by a greenhouse for those who have a green thumb. With an abundance of parking and its four-car garage, Two Pavillion Way will entice family members to enjoy many more gatherings than might be anticipated. The three bedroom, three bath residence, has an open floor plan within the center of the home, with the chef ’s kitchen, dining area, and breath-taking living room extending front to back. Currently, there is a music room facing the ocean to the left, but it could be used as an office or library. At the opposite end of the open space is a double room that can be used for whatever a new owner decides, although it could continue as a media and club room. The nearly 4,000 square-foot home with four fireplaces has

a romantic charm that will melt hearts. An enticing and sought-after first-floor master is indicative of what novels are written about and will be burned to memory forever. Another notable feature is the spiral staircase to a third-level lookout. The view of boat traffic adds to the uniqueness of this location. What truly separates this home from all others is its dramatic views of the ocean and the banks of glass windows and sliding doors. When open, the captivating breeze creates an atmosphere of sheer elegance and enchantment. Offered by Will Milbury and Company at $2,695,000, this one-of-a-kind estate will not remain on the market for long and is worthy of attention and a visit. H To arrange an appointment or for additional information, contact Sarah Dupre Maurer at sarahdm@milburyre.com, or call 508-889-4614.

continued from page 13

people; in addition, a small cadre of politicians and a few in the media have gone so far as to blame us—even justify— the terrorist attack. Such an appalling spectacle, we have come to realize that our attempts to bring peace to the Middle East and support our ally Israel are being undermined by a systemic hatred for our values and way of life. However, patriotism is alive. Found in the New York Post, journalist Steve Cuozzo, penned an article, “9/11 Museum’s Decision to Scrap Special 20th Anniversary Tribute is a Disgrace,” about how the “National September 11 Memorial & Museum is crying poverty for the second year in a row,” and goes on to tell how it will not be able to produce any special exhibits. Furthermore, the 2020 Tribute in Light was nearly canceled but was revived by then Governor Cuomo. What’s more, the story questions whether a bail out for 2021 was to be offered. Additionally, the Museum is planning to restrict the name-ready ceremony to

family members of victims, leaving out the thousands of heroes who ran toward danger—not away. We gather for events, parties, and just about everywhere else, but when it comes to an important national observance, it is a “keep moving folks, nothing to see here” attitude. Without going into the weeds, it is obvious the public has tired from government interference and the use of scare tactics surrounding COVID, and now the questionable fear of variants. Today’s classrooms are focused on the ills of our country, not its greatness; blame and condemnation are the lessons being learned by a new generation. Unfortunately, its excellence has been locked away and labeled as shame. As we come together as a nation, our duty to ourselves and those who follow is to treat 9/11 equally significant as every other battle we have fought, suffered, and won. Not to be misunderstood, we believe this infamous day, as with other

anniversaries marking the cruel and heartless taking of lives, should be recognized and is vital to our understanding of evil, and we should acknowledge the extent others could harm us. As we go to press, we have learned there will be a commemoration ceremony at the Museum accompanied by the annual Tribute in Light illuminating the sky as it should be recognized. But, is it enough? Although the political environment would never consider it, if 9/11 were to be claimed a federal holiday, people from around the globe would learn the truth and motivation of the attacks. It would also serve as a day of mourning for the families afflicted by loss, allowing them to remember their loved ones and the historic efforts of the dedicated first-responders who put their lives in danger. This year, ask your children what they know about this upcoming memorial; who knows, you might learn about the effects of societal transformation and the role it will play in the future. H

O

n June 23, 2019, the newest and largest entertainment and hospitality center in the northeast opened its door to the public; the $2.6 billion project ranked it the most expensive development of its kind that year. A few weeks prior, we attended a media event that included a tour of the gaming floor, spa, guest rooms, and restaurants. The complimentary breakfast, lunch, and samples provided by the resort’s wide variety of restaurants brought rave reviews from discussions with others in the press. And, while the Wynn people provided generous courtesies, it was a promotional tour. So, a real-life experience remained a mystery, leaving it to journalists from around the globe to tout the luxury, style, and stellar sophistication of the new resort. Months later, COVID-19 hit the country, followed by restrictions on travel and public gathering. Shutdowns and

isolation caused complete chaos for businesses worldENCORE wide; but, the most significant impact seemed to be felt by BOSTON companies offering full-service HARBOR RESORT resort amenities. As conditions improved, SHINES Encore Boston Harbor reopened once government officials relaxed mandates. According to Beth Gibbons, Encore’s Public Relations Manager, “Encore Boston Harbor has made enormous efforts to provide guests an exceptional experience and unparalleled enjoyment by ensuring a clean and safe environment.” We were recently invited back to Encore Boston Harbor, and we accepted. For this visit, we were to be guests rather than news people. The intent was to share our observations,

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2021 | 27

encounters with staff, and tell of our experience in the most honest of terms. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

We headed to Boston in anticipation but without expectations; the drive from Connecticut proved to be easy, and with timing Boston traffic, our journey was relaxing—even pleasant. Encore is stunning; its reflective façade and towering presence make it a landmark on the Boston skyline; in fact, I never get tired of looking at it when traveling through the city, which is sometimes weekly. The difference today, I will be watching those watching me. As I pulled into the resort’s entrance, excitement was instilled; the manicured approach off of Broadway in Everett boasts evergreens and blooming floral designs. On the opposite side of the hotel, colorful gardens, custom brick paths, and a seating area at the water’s edge, making it the perfect blueprint for creating a luxurious award-winning outdoor space. FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Driving up to the covered portico, I noticed it was busy. Still, the valet was able to open my door, greet me with a beaming smile and hand me a bottle of chilled water (it was over 90 degrees). He skillfully loaded my bags and equipment onto a cart, then carefully drove the Rover to a secure parking area. It was a remarkable first impression. A quick and efficient bellman seamlessly passed my belongings taken from the car to another staff member waiting at the resort’s entrance, where a lush botanical garden surrounds a floral carousel and four 20 foot multi-trunk ficus trees representing complete indulgence. Our bell, whose smile made me feel at ease, and although early, he escorted me to the front desk for my registration scheduled for 4 p.m. and assured me an early check-in would be granted; it was, and we went straight to the room. As the booking was processing, I heard the receptionist say, “Is the 22nd floor, King Harbor Facing; acceptable to you, Mr. Chan?” Suddenly the excitement grew within; I knew from my previous visit the accommodations were exemplary. THE KING

The room could not be more impressive; through a wide hall, we were escorted to an oversized king room that was better than I remembered. Tasteful design elements and contemporary art complimented the dramatic vista visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Our space included a heavenly comfortable bed with soft-to-the-touch linens, a padded headboard, sofa, table with chairs, and wide-screen television 28 | SEPTEMBER 2021 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

that can be viewed in all directions. I later found out that our room is the largest of its kind in New England, albeit that claim is easily recognized. All mechanical operations are completed by an iPad or requests made to Alexa; and, although she was on break part of the evening, she woke up as morning arrived. Nothing is more appealing than a luxurious bathroom. Bright, with lots of mirrors, a shower, tub, and television, the space is as sizeable as many hotel rooms and caused us to linger when preparing for dinner. CURATED DINING

Rare Steakhouse is widely known for offering a unique menu and is part of an exclusive collection of US restaurants to offer certified Kobe beef—the real thing, not a knock-off. During our time at Encore, the Rare staff would be with whom we would share hours of interaction. Upon reflection, their professionalism, knowledge, and extraordinary effort to service guests were beyond all expectations. The hospitality workers at Encore are the best of the best and deserve our recognition and praise. When we arrived, the host and hostess greeted us by name and brought us to a table by a window with a view of the dazzling dining room. Immediately we were asked if we would enjoy water or a beverage, which was promptly delivered. Our sommelier, server, and bussers circled the table with grace and ease, never to disturb our conversation but to answer every need; bottled water flowed, and glasses of cold champagne were kept filled. After reviewing one of the most comprehensive wine lists ever encountered; ranging from an American White Chardonnay, Au Bon Climat, Los Alamos Vineyard, Santa Barbara County, CA – 2017, at $62; to a bottle of French Red Burgundy, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Conti – 2012, for $19,816; we decided to begin our fine dining journey with Veuve Clicquot, Yellow Label, which was priced as expected – $159.

LoLa 42˚ Boston The Brightest Gem In Boston's Crown Jewels of Fine Dining Restaurants BY JAMES HOLDEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCKI SCHOTZ

any of my reviews center around top-tier chefs and restaurants in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Saratoga, Buffalo, Providence, and many hundreds in between. My experience at LoLa 42˚ Boston is incomparable. Boasting a world-class location on Boston Harbor, a kitchen that exemplifies extraordinary culinary talent, combined with service that leaves a long-lasting impression, allows me to claim it to be New England’s newest 5-Star rated restaurant. Here’s why. I begin by giving a restaurant 100 points; from there, I deduct for missing the mark on attentiveness, the attitude of the staff, décor, cleanliness, quality, plating, taste, creativity, and value. For the first time in my career as a food critic, I didn’t find a single issue that would allow me to demerit its ranking. Remarkably, they are flawless, and visiting LoLa 42˚ Boston for the first time was not just interesting—it was a thrill! Here is some background. There are now three LoLa’s: LoLa 41˚ Nantucket, LoLa 41˚ Palm Beach, and LoLa 42˚ Boston. Each location’s name and concept centers on the longitude, latitude, and number of the parallels where they are located. As such, the atmosphere, culinary pleasures, and refreshments, all coincide with the many flavors, influences, foods, and ingredients found in countries and regions between the two parallels.

Missing from many restaurants is a knowledgeable staff, a precision kitchen, and an atmosphere of sophistication. A restaurant need not be pretentious but should strive to make guests feel essential to the establishment’s long-term success and present unique and spontaneous dining adventures. I visited LoLa 42˚ Boston on a delightful Sunday afternoon. I was immediately impressed by the magnificent views of the city’s skyline, gleaming yachts, and the children playing in the public space adjacent to the café. These sights offer a feeling of exhilaration; how exciting it is to be in the center of Boston’s Renaissance. As we made our way to the reception podium, we were greeted by the pleasant and courteous Sean Morgan. Organized to handle the line of customers, he calmly welcomed us and acted as if we were his priority. Once seated, Mike, one of the most knowledgeable servers I have had the pleasure to meet, learned of our dining expectations and determined how he could enhance our appreciation for this new voyage. We began with a bottle of champagne which perfectly complimented our small plates and entrees. First, we sampled a tuna tartare, served with avocado, crispy wonton, and drizzled soy citrus. The presentation was brilliant, and the taste beyond compare; fresh and invigorating, it seems to be a popular dish, considering other tables also ordered the same. The next plate presented was octopus carpaccio; lemongrass fennel olive oil, shiso pesto, grilled pickled peppers, crispy pearled rice, and mixed greens were combined to create a burst of intense flavors. Afterward, Executive Chef Josh Carter had our server deliver a crab stuffed avocado salad, including mangos and ponzu. A popular choice of repeat customers, we were happy we didn’t miss this signature dish; it is worthy of your attention. We also sampled honshu, a classic roll of tuna, cucumber, and avocado, topped with hamachi, togarashi, serrano, and poke sauce. Delectable and full of flavor, beautifully presented; another wise choice. Between courses, Michele from LoLa 41˚ Palm Beach, located in Florida—currently the manager of the Boston 32 | SEPTEMBER 2021 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

location, visited us to review the genesis of the corporation, its growth, and to share the restaurant’s commitment to quality, service, and its reputation of being “Boston’s busiest fine dining restaurant.” Shortly after her visit, we progressed to a spicy and savory dish of Korean beef bulgogi; cooked with egg noodles, Chinese broccoli, chilies, and crispy garlic; the mouth-watering flavors seared a positive impression in my mind. We followed with a trip to Italy and thrilled over a staple, The LoLa Bolognese. Served piping hot, the creamy meat sauce perfectly blended with ricotta gnocchi, grana padano, and Italian parsley; watch out, Federal Hill, this is tough competition. A meal isn’t complete without a taste of the house’s panseared halibut served with grilled corn, heirloom tomato salad, and basil pesto. Picture perfect with a flavor to match, this plate elevates LoLa 42˚ Boston to gourmet dining and one of Boston’s best. While we tried a fantastic sampler of intriguing menu options, we still had cravings for dessert. Opting for a pretzel parfait and tres leches, a three milk sponge cake accentuated with spiced caramel sauce and strawberry; these two scrumptious sweets—with a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, produced feelings of nirvana. The LoLa° 42 group has produced aces in the recreation of a refined dining experience. It is not surprising that nearly every day, I contemplate my next visit. The indoor/outdoor fundraising event was magical and enhanced by dramatic views of the Newport Bridge in the distance, and a fleet of yachts anchored close to the shoreline, their lights twinkling as the sun began to set. An impressive list of guests, dressed in their summer finest, mingled and chatted with cocktails, enjoyed a marvelous dinner, and danced the night away with music provided by the talented Marcus Reid Band. Hosted by the Trustees and Mike Harbinger of Boston Swing Central, their efforts gave reason for the large crowd to dress, dance, and act out their inner turn-of-the-century fantasies in the shadow of the 2,100-acre Crane Estate. The sun was bright, the music fantastic, and the costumes were authentic. People of all ages learned and practiced dance steps, toured the property, walked the rolling lawn out to the vista of the Atlantic ocean, while conscious of how enjoyable the weekend was after being in social isolation for so very long. As expected, guests—known to be some of the friendliest ever to meet, offered beaming smiles and pleasant conversations while lingering around the shopping bazaar, food vendors, vintage cars, and the many canopies and blankets set up for a traditional summer picnic. Bald-Faced Lie or Legit? Making Sense of Hair Loss Treatments

PA RT 2

P

BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.ED

eople have long-equated hairiness with virility. In our attempt to satisfy this perception, history is replete with bizarre, albeit well-intentioned, hair growth tonics. In the ancient Egyptian medical text Papyrus Ebers, dating around 1550 B.C., hair loss sufferers could choose from several therapies: wearing boiled porcupine hair on the scalp for four days; applying a mixture of oil-fried female greyhound leg and donkey hoof to their head; or rubbing the combined fat of hippo, tomcat, snake, ibex (a wild goat), and crocodile onto their bald spots.1 Hippocrates, suffering from male-pattern baldness, devised an ill-fated potion beetroot, horseradish, pigeon feces, spices, and opium.1 Later, Caesar of Rome tried a mixture of bear grease, horse teeth, and ground mice at the suggestion of Cleopatra. When this failed, it turns out the laurel wreath he is often depicted as wearing was mostly intended to hide his receding hairline.1 Thousands of years later, as the world’s population and our knowledge of hair loss have grown, so has the global market demand for hair restoration products. According to one recent re50 | SEPTEMBER 2021 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

port, the global hair loss treatment market is expected to go from a 2020 value of about $3.6 billion to nearly $5.5 billion by 2027.2 Though today’s products may not contain boiled porcupine hair and pigeon poop, still, what works? BUYER BEWARE

Though you won’t find literal snake oil in modern-day hair growth tonics, experts say hair loss scams are common. So it’s important to be aware of questionable products backed with deceptive marketing. Most of the deception lies in the false “blocked follicle” premise but can also include claims such as nourishing the scalp or enhancing circulation. The blocked hair follicle idea is based on sebum in the scalp, an oily substance produced by the follicle’s sebaceous gland that acts as a natural skin and hair conditioner. However, the root cause is not sebum but a combination of hormones and genetics in which the hair follicle is essentially preprogrammed to die, resulting in male pattern baldness. It’s common, for example, to find online advertorials with the heading “Sponsored Articles from Around the Web” underneath local or national news articles. These ads often tout

unproven natural products as having the ability to regrow hair very quickly, with titles such as “Don’t Pay for a Hair Transplant Until You Try This.” Clicking on the link takes a reader to a lengthy faux news site filled with dubious endorsements and then a misleading call to action like paying the only shipping cost for a trial sample—without reading the hidden fees in fine print that end up on one’s credit card. What’s more, these ads usually have the name of one’s town or city to gain trust, but this is merely geolocation tracking of the reader’s computer IP address. The US Federal Trade Commission has intervened, but vanquishing these intricate webs of deceit is challenging.3 Women are especially vulnerable to hair loss scammers since they’re a common target. Hair restoration specialists like Michael Wolfeld, M.D. emphasize avoiding the blocked hair follicle scheme. MINOXIDIL AND FINASTERIDE

Because of the prevalence of hair loss scams, there are still just two medical treatments for hair loss that have been approved for safety and efficacy by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA): minoxidil (Rogaine®) and finasteride (Propecia® and Proscar®). Both minoxidil and finasteride have been clinically shown to stave off hair loss and slow balding and are rated by Consumer Reports as “probably” and “maybe,” respectively, in terms of whether or not consumers should try them.4 Minoxidil is FDA-approved for both men and women for androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) and is available over the counter as a topically applied solution and foam. The answer tends to be more effective since it’s better at penetrating the scalp. Wolfeld says a 5 percent minoxidil solution is better than 10 percent, though 2 percent and 5 percent solutions are equally beneficial. An oral prescription drug, finasteride, is FDA-approved for men but is sometimes used off-label for postmenopausal women. Though its exact mechanism of action isn’t yet fully known, minoxidil is thought to stimulate hair growth by promoting hair cell survival and preventing hair cell death through enzymatic and other activity, resulting in a prolonged anagen (growth) phase of the hair strand. Minoxidil’s vasodilating activity may also help to protect the hair follicle and extend hair growth, increasing blood flow and nutrients to the hair follicle.5 Finasteride, on the other hand, takes a different path to address hair loss by inhibiting the enzyme Type II 5-alphareductase that converts the male hormone testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. In male-pattern baldness, there is a genetic predisposition for DHT to build up in the hair follicles that causes the hair follicle to shrink and the hair growth cycle to short-circuit.6 Hippocrates may have failed to remedy hair loss. Still, his observation that castrated men (eunuchs) never lost their hair has been confirmed by modern science and aligns with the action of finasteride.

While many men and women benefit from minoxidil and finasteride, research suggests it may be advantageous to use both treatments concurrently. In one study, 428 Chinese men with pattern baldness were randomly assigned to 5 percent minoxidil alone (122 subjects), finasteride alone (154), or both treatments (152) for one year. All men were of similar age and had hair loss. After one year, 80.5 percent of men taking finasteride, 59 percent taking 5 percent minoxidil, and 94.1 percent taking combination therapy showed improvement.7 The downside to both of these drugs is they have to be kept up indefinitely to stem hair loss since you’re battling against heredity. Most new hair growth will likely be lost within several months to a year once you stop taking them. Minoxidil won’t cure baldness and stop a receding hairline, and it is most effective for people under age 40 with recent hair loss. If results are not seen with finasteride after 12 months, further treatment likely won’t help.8, 9 (A word of caution for women trying minoxidil: be sure to rinse it from your hair before bed; otherwise, it could get on the pillow and face, leading to facial hair.) OTHER NON-SURGICAL HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and light-emitting diode (LED) therapy are forms of medicine called biomodulation and have been around for decades. The light is emitted inside a hat or helmet-like device to stimulate hair follicles, speeding cell metabolism and potentially lengthening the hair cycle and the length and thickness of hair strands. Wolfeld explains that these devices are FDA-approved for safety but not efficacy. These painless devices are pricey, but research and anecdotal evidence is supporting their effectiveness for pattern baldness. One recent study concluded that LLLT “appears to be an effective treatment option for AGA [androgenetic alopecia] in both male and female patients with minimal adverse effects,” although the study was limited by a small sample size, lack of follow-up, and an inappropriate placebo helmet.10 Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) isolated from a person’s blood, is an emerging, non-invasive and painless hair loss treatment gaining in popularity. The technique involves a needleless spray technology to inject the platelets just beneath the scalp’s surface. Researchers consider PRP a “promising” hair loss treatment, with studies showing a reduction in hair loss and pattern baldness, with improved hair quality. At the same time, however, there is as yet no standard protocol used among practitioners, and so results can vary, making it difficult to confirm PRP’s effectiveness.11 Natural DHT blockers are another potential avenue for hair loss, though more research is needed on these compounds to confirm their effectiveness. Wolfeld says consumers need to be careful with products claiming to block DHT. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2021 | 51

Natural substances with potential value in hair loss treatment. Herb/Vitamin

Hair Growth Mechanism

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Its rare amino acid cucurbitin may block DHT.

Caffeine

May extend the anagen (growth) phase of hair.

Rosemary Oil

Improved hair thickness on par with minoxidil in a small study

Green Tea Epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG) content may block DHT by inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase enzyme. Saw Palmetto

Like EGCG, may block DHT by inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase enzyme.

Pygeum

Effective in early research for helping reduce an enlarged prostate, also linked to increasing DHT.

Lycopene

A natural prostate cancer treatment is thought to moderate DHT levels.

Vitamins B-6 and B-12 are commonly associated with hair loss treatment, but there is insufficient evidence that supplementation affects pattern baldness. Supplementing with vitamin D, however, has been shown to improve symptoms of pattern baldness and telogen effluvium (hair loss following a traumatic event). Iron should also be increased in cases of deficiency for pattern baldness, especially in women. Meanwhile, experts say there is no evidence that biotin supplementation affects pattern baldness.12 Another natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor/DHT blocker is the mineral zinc. While evidence zinc may be effective against an enlarged prostate (another use of finasteride), research has shown that men experiencing pattern baldness have lower levels of zinc in their blood and hair than men not experiencing androgenetic hair loss. Though there is anecdotal evidence that zinc supplementation may slow hair loss, it is not yet advised for this purpose.12 Other recommendations for treating hair loss include, for example, using neutral shampoos (no parabens/salts), treating excessive Demodex mites in the scalp that can burrow into the follicle and strip away nutrients, and hormone balancing in women. HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

Surgical hair loss treatments have come a long way since the 1950s. Today, there are multiple surgical techniques for 52 | SEPTEMBER 2021 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

restoring hair in both men and women. Two principal methods are follicle unit strip surgery (FUSS), in which a strip of hair from a donor area on the head or body is separated into hair units and then transplanted into balding areas, and follicle unit extraction (FUE), in which individual hair follicles are relocated. Both outpatient methods can be effective, though FUE can produce better, less noticeable results with an experienced surgeon. Without additional procedures like scalp reduction, plastic surgeons say hair transplantation can provide moderate results, and studies show high patient satisfaction with FUE. Research also suggests that combining PRP with FUE increases transplant success.13 That said, hair transplantation can’t stop future hair loss, and follow-up surgeries may be necessary. Profile

One of the Last Soldiers of the Greatest Generation BY MEL B. YOKEN, PH.D., AND AVERY HAMLIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEL B. YOKEN, PH.D

n extraordinary man, Peter Orlando, living in Concord, Massachusetts, is a veritable hero. He is 99 years young, and with his unique joie de vivre, resolute acumen, and unparalleled savvy, there is no one on this planet quite like him, especially at his advanced age. Orlando fought in WWII, was recently bestowed The French Legion of Honor, the highest and most prestigious medal imaginable, by Emmanuel Macron, the President of France. Originally from South Boston, Orlando was a radio man on a US Navy tugboat that helped pull damaged ships off the Normandy beaches during D-Day. In 2019, he traveled back to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day; it was a dream come true for Orlando and one of the apogees of his life. In July of this year, Yoken and Avery interviewed Orlando, and we are pleased to share the conversation. Do you have any thoughts on living to 99? Orlando: You have to pick the right wife. I was married for 66 years to a wonderful woman. She was smart, raised five beautiful children and me. She graduated from high school when she was 15, but unfortunately, the family was on hard times. That was during the Great Depression. She didn’t go to college, but she went to secretarial school because she could take shorthand as fast as I’m talking. She was wonderful with that. She was an amanuensis, and also, she was a great wife, a great cook, and a great person, and I miss her dearly. She’s been gone going on a little over eight years, and I miss her. That’s all I got to say. 54 | SEPTEMBER 2021 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Peter Orlando (left) and Mel B. Yoken, Ph.D (right) What is the best advice you ever received? Orlando: The best advice I ever received; I could push that around into opportunity—I had a chance at the end of WWII. I was in Innsbruck, Austria, and attached to the French occupation army. And the best advice I had was when an opportunity is offered—take it, and I did. I volunteered for many things, and because of this, I got to do a tremendous amount of traveling. I met people, and I enjoyed it. That was my college. Do you have any goals remaining? Orlando: I’m living here alone now, and I don’t like it; I’m very lonely. I guess the only goal I have now is to hope I’m not found a week later at the bottom of a set of stairs, that’s all. I’ve had a good life, I’ve done a lot, I’ve been fairly healthy, and I had a great marriage. I have a million friends at this point. So the only goal I have is not to die alone, seriously. What is the achievement you are most proud of as a WWII veteran? Orlando: Coming home in one piece. I was in Europe, I was at Normandy, and I came home without a scratch. How does it feel to have received the most prestigious French Legion of Honor? Orlando: I was flattered, and I’m flustered [sic]. They must have run out of people!

I’ve been telling people, I was in the radio room on the ship I was on, we called it the radio shack, and in the top right drawer there was .45 automatic, and I was on that ship for two years, and I didn’t touch it. I used to open that drawer and make sure it was still there… I had nothing to do with it. But, I just felt that I was taking this honor, all of this honor, for all of the other fellows who weren’t ever recognized; there were 16 million of us in WWII. We hit a wreck, but we didn’t sink, went into drydock, and they fixed it. While the boat was being repaired, I went to Austria and ended up in Innsbruck. While in the French-occupied zone, the French knocked on our door and threw all the family out. When the French left, I got them all back and told them I just wanted one room; I had friends for life, and I wasn’t afraid to close my eyes at night. How do you think the world has changed since you were a child? What strikes you as the most different? Orlando: Well, I think it’s the liberalization of it; anything goes today. I grew up in kind of a strict household. If people married twice, you know, they were disgraced. Anything goes today. I’m from an Italian-American family, and they were very moral. But one thing my brother and I often discussed, he used to say to me, “Italians live a culture of death,” because all we did was go to wakes. Another thing, women’s dresses, the chest covering, is going lower and lower, and eventually, you’ll be walking around

topless. [laughter] I don’t think it’ll be in my time; I don’t know how much longer I have. How do you want to be remembered? Orlando: Well, I want to be remembered as a nice guy. I want to be mourned! I mean, you know, as a decent person, because the world is full of decent people and you never hear about them. I just want to be one of those who never knowingly stepped on anyone’s toes. That’s about all I can say. Any final comments? Orlando: If you get any royalties on this, I want some. [laughter] I’m a yakker. At the end of my career, I was a printing salesman, and they said I could talk a dog down from a meat wagon. [laughter] So I always thought that was the greatest compliment that was paid to me anyways. I always, when I did stuff, wanted to do it right. I enjoyed it and worked for a wonderful company. If you could invite three or four people to dinner, whom would you invite and why? Orlando: Well, I’m 99 years old, and I’ve had a lot of ships pass in the night, so to speak. At this point, the only thing that comes to my mind are the neighbors. I’ve been sitting here for 66 years, and I’ve got some wonderful neighbors—they treat me great; I would invite them to dinner! A MAN’S

Challenge BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

Intimacy

T

he masculine ideal is a template that forms men’s core values and guides their attitude and choices. It makes men mysterious and confusing to female partners. Also referred to as the “man code,” it is a group of rules tacitly understood and followed by the brotherhood of men. Many of the male partners’ choices are confusing, unnecessary, and even silly from a female perspective. The masculine ideal defines men and manliness while simultaneously binding them with impossible and unhealthy standards. The man code includes the belief that a man is worthless until he proves otherwise. His drive to compete is rooted in

between men and women is that men are disconnected from nature, a connection women never lose. A man’s life task is to re-establish this connection. Without it, men have a greater susceptibility towards narcissism, the inability to consider or empathize with others. Other byproducts of this disconnection may be men’s oversized representation in the prison population and propensity towards violence and rebelliousness. Men who struggle with low self-esteem are limited in their ability to regulate their strength and power. Inwardly they don’t feel powerful and are blocked from incorporating management into their being. Instead, men’s access to power is limited to possessing power and is aligned with rage. Being powerful is superior to possessing power. A person who feels entitled to ownership may have what is

Men favor external appearances of strength, such as big muscles, a big voice, a big truck, or a big bank account to cover up the inner sense of fragility. proving his masculine worthiness. Men may be unable to resist competing for women’s attention in sport and most everything else. He may compete in moments when his female partner finds it wholly unnecessary and even risky. Just as women compare their bodies to beauty, men compare themselves to the masculine ideal of strength and power. The number one rule of the man code is “Don’t show weakness,” referring to the human weaknesses which men are shamefully aware. To live up to this ideal, men must reject many human qualities, such as vulnerability, sensitivity, and emotions. Many reject openness in love and relationships because it feels vulnerable and therefore weak. Men favor external appearances of strength, such as big muscles, a big voice, a big truck, or a big bank account to cover up the inner sense of fragility. We all grew up with powerlessness as children. Because of this, many men feel uncomfortable with and avoid all things child-like, including playfulness and joy. Men who were victims to harm or abuse as children grow up deeply ashamed of their feelings of vulnerability. One distinction

desired, whereas one who does not must steal to have it. Demonstrations of power combined with self-hate include tendencies toward domination, bullying, control, and aggression. To compensate for inner self-hate and feeling powerless many men adopt extreme displays of power, such as ruling others through fear, an attitude of bravado, and empire-building. One expression of the masculine ideal is a strong sex drive; power and sexuality are strongly associated. For a man with low self-esteem, sexual desire can easily override his values and morals. He will desire to prove his masculinity by contrasting it against femininity; the more he wins women’s attention, the more masculine he feels. The weaker he feels, the harder it will be to maintain fidelity. Men who feel good about themselves need not prove they are powerful. Earning love, respect, and admiration from family and community are a sign of a man’s success. He is confident when he trusts himself to get this done.
