he stress of providing for your family in a tittering economy is difficult. Inflation devaluing our buying power is evident by fuel and grocery bills. Adding to the pain is the lack of security on every front; is it any wonder why our collective anxiety is at an all-time high? According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders affect some 40 million adults in the US—that’s over 18 percent of the population. And, while many of the subcategories falling under the heading of anxiety are treatable, less than 37 percent of those afflicted seek help. It is common for those experiencing high levels of anxiety also to be fighting depression. The combination of anxiety and depression can be linked to genetics and brain chemistry, but it is also tied to personality development and life events. In speaking with Clinical Director at Brightside Behavioral Health in Warwick, Rhode Island, Amy Creegan, MS, LMFT, explains, “Pre-existing anxieties have been exacerbated in this time of uncertainty and unsure footing. We all still seem to be waiting to exhale from the cascading effects of the pandemic.”

Anxiety is the result of uninterrupted stress. Being reactive is normal; our fight or flight response system—found in the recess of our brains—works well, but the trouble begins when it refuses to shut off. When a person is in a stressful situation but finds resolution, the body’s feedback loop returns to regular operation. Trouble begins when the response mechanism remains

This past year, financial giant Capital One reported the result of a recent CreditWise survey found for most people, finances were the number one cause of stress at 73 percent; politics 59
percent, work 49 percent, and family 46 percent. The survey also showed that high rates of anxiety due to finances were found throughout every generation. OPTIONS
Many people find they are stressed daily, their anxiety continues to build— without relief, and they begin to notice mood changes that may be linked to depression. For them, a therapist is a wise choice; talking to a trained professional to provide insight into the etiology of their change in behavior and thought processes can be enough to get them back on track. For others, it could be seeking support from a friend or family member, developing an exercise routine as simple as a brisk daily walk or hike, meditation, or other physical relaxation techniques. What is most important is recognizing when stress is taking over your life, and your reaction to it isn’t solving the problem. ith conviction, the public is making arrangements to travel for the next few months, and nothing will get in their way this time around. A second, maybe third round of the COVID scare isn’t penetrating their collective psyche, and so they are planning to hit the road—even though fuel prices have hit decade-old highs and

fly the not-so-friendly skies as the holidays approach. Many events are opening up, and families will come together, largely because the masses have opted to become vaccinated with both the first and second doses. Along with masking, there is evidence the spread of the dreadful disease is being curtailed. Naturally, families will gather for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but what
about all those days in between and after the celebrations? For most, it will be day-tripping to New York and around New England; people from all over the northeast will be traveling to cities, coastal towns, and of course, heading to the mountains for wintertime fun and excitement. For singles, who have had just about all they can stand, will likely jet down to a resort for a few days of sun and fun—

and, who can blame them. As we all know, the hospitality industry is fraught with problems, higher food costs, labor shortages, and regulations; as a result, there will be problems getting reservations at the most desirable restaurants, so make your plans as early as possible. By all reports, there is a significant increase in people wanting to expand their leisure time into outdoor activities, partly because they don’t wish to breathe the same air you do, but staying active means living longer and everyone is on the same track. It also seems that spectator sports are rising in popularity; many of those canceled last year have been reinstated. For those taking homage indoors, some antique shows will reopen, fashion week is back, and museums are seeing full bookings day after day. The public isn’t taking the last 18 months lying down; they are shifting into gear and are ready to charge ahead for the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. H

The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Concert for Our City

O
n September 30, the BSO performed their first concert in front of a live audience at Symphony Hall since March 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the closure of the Hall for 18 months. The opening night program included Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, under the direction of BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons and John Williams. On Sunday of the opening weekend, the BSO performed a special concert for those lucky enough to learn about the extraordinary musical event titled “Concert For Our City: Reunited At Symphony Hall.” Free of charge, the concert was near capacity.

Music fans and artists reunited at the famed concert hall, where four BSOs titled conductors performed a rare and unique concert creating musical magic. Conductors Andris Nelsons, Thomas Wilkins, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart lead a magnificent production that will live in the minds of all who attended. Along with violin soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter, the players filled the glorious space with perfect sound and rhythm for more than an hour, bringing the crowd to their feet over and over again. In a statement released prior to the event, and repeated to the audience, BSO President and CEO Gail Samuel said, “It is our hope that this special free performance will provide some much needed joy and inspiration as we celebrate the reopening of Symphony Hall and share that beautiful space again with our Boston community. For all of us at the BSO, we can’t imagine a better counter to the pandemic than welcoming concertgoers back to live performances at Symphony Hall.” Opening the program, BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons conducted the BSO in Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture—the first piece performed by the BSO in 1881—a work that imparts a sense of renewal and revitalization as orchestra and audience come together again in a shared space. Mr. Nelsons also led the players in the final movement of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra (music that the BSO premiered in 1944 under then Music Director Serge Koussevitzky).

BSO Youth and Family Concerts Conductor Thomas Wilkins took the baton for movements from William Grant Still’s evocative 1948 orchestral suite Wood Notes, music inspired by poems about America’s natural beauty. Boston Pops Conductor Laureate John Williams took charge and enchanted the audience with three of his recent film score arrangements for violin and orchestra with German violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. Williams recreated a selection of tunes many are familiar with, yet, he took time to share some anecdotes about bringing orchestra music back to the movie industry, including his misunderstanding of a relationship between two actors in the popular film series Star Wars, when he wrote the score. ity of contributing music for a film planned to be added to the famous Indiana Jones chronicles coming soon. Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart led the Pops in the humorous Ringtone Cycle arranged by Mark Cumberland, Rachel Bruerville’s propulsive Dancing on Tiptoes (but never falling), and an arrangement of St. Louis Blues by “Father of the Blues” W.C. Handy. Added value to the story, the author leads readers through the history of the American Revolution and displays how colonists and loyalists interacted—often brutally towards each other. Familiar names encircle the main characters, with leaders of the day being drawn into the fray and gossip, kept alive by talk and rumors exchanged in the many taverns that served as public houses for social gatherings. Noone delivers readers back in time, allowing them to grasp onto the same realities faced today, but in a setting of buckle shoes, waistcoats, and knickers. hode Island’s premier holiday art event and sale opens for their 39th annual Holiday Show & Sale in December. The event will feature more than 65 professional artists from the region and is held at the historic Pawtucket Armory located at 172 Exchange Street, Pawtucket, R.I. An opening reception will be Thursday, December 2, from 5-9 p.m., with shopping opportunities over two full weekends. The popular and much anticipated New England holiday tradition allows patrons to view and purchase exceptional, high-quality work from a juried selection of artists. Many of the fine arts and crafts are considered the best in their medium, ranging from glass to wood, paintings, sculptures, metal, fiber, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, and photography. The Foundry Show is unique and entirely planned and operated by the artist members. Each artist has a task to complete to make this year’s event a success; they have begun to run electric wiring, hang direction signs, post to social media, handle public relations, and even check customers out with their purchases. It is a group effort, a labor of love. Launched over three decades ago by a community of artists who opened their I-95 Foundry Building Studios in downtown Providence, the Foundry Artists Show & Sale provides a unique opportunity to experience one of the area’s most significant resources—its artists. Narcissistic Personalities
A PERSONALITY DISORDER ON THE RISE, UNREPORTED, AND CAUSING HEARTACHE BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.ED
I
n Greek mythology, there was a young hunter who stood out for his beauty. He was the son of Cephissus, the river god, and Liriope, the nymph. In one account, the Roman poet Ovid explains that Tiresias, the blind seer, told the boy’s mother that her son would live a long life so long as he never noticed himself. But when the boy rejected the love of Echo, the Oreod nymph, who died of a broken heart; he drew the ire of the gods. After witnessing his reflection in a pristine spring, the boy was cursed with a deep love of self that could never be consummated. He died shortly after, some say
by suicide, and a flower of his namesake appeared where he laid. The boy’s name was Narcissus, from which the term narcissist originates. Statistics show a rising number of modern-day expressions of this Greek tragedy playing out across Western nations—so much so that researchers say we have a “narcissism epidemic.” They ask, “Are modern capitalistic cultures nurturing narcissism?” They point to the endorsement of the statement “I am an important person,” going from just 12 percent in 1963 to roughly 80 percent in 1992 among thousands of sampled adolescents. They note greater use of personal pronouns like NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | NOVEMBER 2021 | 49
I and me versus we and us in modern literature and a jump in phrases like I am the greatest, from 1960 to 2008. They cite an increase in self-focused song lyrics and fame in television.1 Attributed to childhood trauma and fueled by social media, narcissism appears to be nestled in all sectors of society. Because of damage inflicted to those captured in the undertow of manipulation, the topic begs the following questions: Who is a narcissist? How can we detect them in the search for a loving relationship? And, what long-lasting damage can they do to the unsuspecting or untrained? FIXATED ON SELF
1 of 10 officially recognized personality disorders, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), is a complex mental health condition characterized by inflated self-importance, lack of empathy, and an unquenchable thirst for attention or appreciation. A narcissist will have delusions of grandeur, readily demean others, possess low self-esteem, and seek those that can benefit them with praise, money, and sex. Narcissists need to feel perfect at all times; otherwise, they feel threatened. Thus, while they [project] very high self-esteem, it’s dependent on constant external validation.2 In general, experts say people with personality disorders and especially NPD have a long track record of problems with intimacy and close relationships.2 Part of a constellation of four overlapping psychological disorders, NPD may also be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), and/or histrionic personality disorder (HPD),

as well as other conditions like major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or substance abuse.3 We know that NPD is widespread in the US, yet official statistics range from just 0.5-5 percent of the general population since many people won’t admit they have a problem.4 A 2009 US estimate had NPD affecting 7.7 percent of men and 4.8 percent of women, while other research from that year suggested the rate of NPD more than doubled between 1999 and 2009.5, 6 NPD can ultimately have many negative health outcomes if untreated; such as suicidal fantasies and increased risk of drug and alcohol abuse, and arrogant or aggressive behavior. Psychological effects can include depression and anxiety, and an inability to take criticism. Social impacts can include, decreased job or school performance; social withdrawal; and a lack of close relationships; either because of the narcissist’s demeaning attitude, or their avoidance of intimacy for fear of having their imperfections exposed and judged.4 HOW NARCISSISM MANIFESTS
Men and women display narcissistic traits differently. Women with NPD tend to be more competitive with other women and feel threatened. They also exhibit jealousy and have deep insecurities. In contrast, men tend to take advantage and feel entitled, and are more likely to exhibit aggression and a desire for power. Both sexes are equally vain and self-absorbed.4 Narcissists typically fall into one of four categories, outlined in Table 1. Researchers also say that personality traits affect how NPD manifests. People can have “grandiose narcissism” in which they exhibit the classic narcissist profile of being openly immodest, self-absorbed, entitled, and domineering; or, they can have “vulnerable narcissism” characterized by introversion, self-absorption, moodiness, and shifting feelings of deep pride and shame, superiority and inadequacy. Vulnerable narcissists can still feel superior, but tend to shy away from criticism and may avoid people in doing so.7, 8 It’s important to keep in mind that NPD is associated with long-standing behavior patterns and not isolated episodes or a normal display of self-love. Many of us have narcissistic, selfcentered traits even if we don’t meet the criteria for NPD, though more of us are showing toxic, narcissistic behavior.2, 9 THE MAKING OF A NARCISSIST
3. Appearance-obsessed (“somatic”) This person is fixated on their physical appearance, from which they get their self-worth, and tend to point out others’ flaws. 4. Spiritual This person feels “holier than thou” and will use religion or spirituality to intimidate, harm, or self-aggrandize.

The cause of narcissism isn’t known, but if a person is male and someone in his lineage had NPD, chances are greater he will also have NPD. Narcissists have been shown to have less gray matter in their brain’s left anterior insula responsible for such traits as empathy, compassion, and regulating emotions.2 We know that parenting plays a critical role in the making of a narcissist. A child can experience many losses over time that may lead to NPD as an adult, such as those listed in Table 2. As alluded to earlier, a person’s cultural environment may also contribute to NPD onset. In the first study of its kind, researchers were able to compare NPD in people living in former East Germany,

as an equal.” This will challenge the narcissist to change how they relate.9

They found that people raised in West Germany had greater NPD and lower self-esteem than people in East Germany.1 THE NARCISSIST NEXT DOOR
Experts confirm that many narcissists are drawn to careers in finance, law, and politics, offering status and power. In finance, for example, big decisions can be made without any consideration for the welfare of others.10 But what about the narcissist you may be living with? Author and psychologist Lisa Firestone, Ph.D., explains that in relationships, even slight criticism can often lead a narcissist to lash out and be condescending in a desperate attempt to maintain their feeling of superiority. “Narcissistic relationships tend to be very challenging. Narcissistic partners usually have difficulty really loving someone else, because they don’t truly love themselves.” At first, a narcissist can be alluring with their charm and passion, but their lack of empathy and controlling, jealous, fragile nature, eventually leads to a lot of ill will. Narcissists only value their partners (and children) to fulfill their needs, often leaving them very lonely, angry, and/or ashamed.9 To cope with someone having NPD, or people with narcissistic tendencies, Firestone says people should reflect on why they are in that relationship. Do they feel secure around someone in the spotlight so they can be passive or because this is how they derive their self-worth? Did they have a self-centered parent? Does the abuse match a negative self-perception? Many partners of narcissists have co-dependency issues and lack self-confidence. She advises that partners realize narcissists are compensating for their lack of self-love and feelings of inadequacy and that they learn self-compassion and develop self-confidence to avoid being a victim. “In all encounters, act equal, and treat your partner

They were found to be more goal-oriented and confident, for example, which protected against depression and stress. Lead researcher Kostas Papageorgiou, Ph.D., argues that while narcissism can be bad (part of the “dark tetrad” of Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism), it does have some redeeming qualities that should be cultivated as other qualities are discouraged.12 Current treatment for narcissism involves recognizing and separating from critical inner voices, or attitudes, formed early in life. Narcissists need to separate from behaviors that protected them from abusive or neglectful parents that they’ve carried into adulthood, such as an attitude of superiority or condescending behaviors. They need to break harmful behavior patterns of self-centeredness, constantly comparing themselves to others, and always needing to be the best or perfect. Also effective is emphasizing self-compassion over self-esteem. Self-compassion teaches kindness toward oneself and realizing our shared humanity, promoting needed self-awareness and compassion toward others; whereas, self-esteem is based on comparing oneself to others and needing to be special—shown in research by Kristin Neff, Ph.D. to actually promote narcissism.9 Experts say narcissists are capable of learning and feeling empathy, the “ultimate antidote.”2 Since children learn from adults’ manipulative ways, it’s important that we identify any narcissistic tendencies of our own. Beware Of The Narcissists Coming For You
T
he holidays are here, and no one wants to be alone. Still, a word to the wise, some narcissists would like to target you for nothing more than to win you over sexually, financially, or enjoy the pleasure they derive from trapping you into a life-draining relationship leaving you confused and with self-doubt. When we are the most vulnerable, these individuals who have this personality disorder will search for prey. Initially, they romance their victims with absolute conviction, speaking of love and the future, hoping to trap their target in a short-lived whirlwind of holiday romance. Shortly after, they go into the second phase, where they will attempt to exploit and detach you from your self-identity through criticism and to point out your faults. It’s here their deceit, lies, and intentions become apparent, but you find it hard to pull away; you are now their ‘supply.’ And, the insecure and unempathetic huckster will never leave you the way they found you. While no one is expected to pull out the psychologist’s go-to handbook, the DSM-V, for diagnosing, here are some warning signs when meeting someone who seems too good to be true. TRUST YOUR GUT; RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR
1. Lack of empathy; they act without care for your feelings. They will disregard your explaining that they have slighted or hurt you by their actions every time it occurs. Notice they will never say or mean they are sorry for any of their actions, and they will tell you that you’re too sensitive. 2. When questioned about their past relationships, some will describe 54 | NOVEMBER 2021 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA
having been in a dysfunctional one that may have lasted years but filled with sexual promiscuity, adultery, substance abuse (not only with them but their co-dependent mate too). Likely, there was constant lying, deceit, and often, all of these
behaviors combined. Others have dozens of short-term relationships, which they will claim wasn’t their fault. 3. Watch for the person who is the life of the party, attempting at every avenue to gain acceptance, stand out, excessively flirts, and be falsely charming. These people need a ‘supply’ of attention and future victims, so they are always hunting. Inevitably, you are only one in the stable of many. 4. They are particularly private about simple things like all their phone notifications are silenced when you are around. They don’t keep anything personal where it can be seen, and they refuse to answer questions directly, instead use word salad, leaving you to wonder what they just said? 5. When they feel you won’t give in to their requests for you supplying everything to enrich them financially and emotionally, they often become agitated, verbally abusive, and
hostile; expect to be blamed for the argument. 6. You will often hear women call themselves “old-fashioned” and believe you are responsible for all expenses. They will spend your money like water, only to tell you they need money—the reward is usually false attention, promises of a future, or sexual pleasure without emotional connection. If you refuse, you’ll be called cheap. For women, you will be left paying for dates over and over because his wallet was left at home or a payroll check never made it into the mailbox. And, when he promises to pay you back, forget about it; that investment is history. 7. If you’ve planned an event or trip with your new narcissist, and you’re paying, don’t count on being called back as the winner. Sound confusing? It is, you may be one of many suitors who are submitting bids for their attention; know the person offering the luxurious outcome will win, leaving you empty. 8. Risky behavior is another sign you may have made a wrong choice; unprotected sex, reckless driving, excessive consumption of alcohol. These types of behaviors fit the profile of a sociopath. You may also notice that while you gaze at them, they are looking at someone else. This year, give yourself a gift, don’t get tangled with the person looking to control you, rebuke you and take you for all you are worth. Better to be a little lonely than to become filled with remorse and an empty bank account. H
All Eyes Are On You and Your Money egional financial institutions are taking the lead by requesting the public’s support opposing the proposed expansion of tax information reporting. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) recently told reporters that a controversial tax reporting provision would be included in their budget reconciliation package requiring banks to report information to the Internal Revenue Service on gross inflows and outflows of customer accounts above a certain threshold. This legislation would allow the US government full access to every citizen’s personal financial information and documentation. Speaker Pelosi did not specify what that threshold would be, although
Democrats have eyed a $10,000 threshold, up from the $600 initially proposed by the Biden administration. House Democrats have not yet agreed on the details of a final reconciliation package, and no vote has been scheduled at this time. The American Bankers Association aggressively oppose this tax reporting proposal at any dollar threshold, calling it “bad tax policy,” and urging lawmakers to reject it from any future legislation. In a recent letter to lawmakers, the American Bankers Association noted that “the impact on average Americans and the safety and privacy of their financial information will remain the same regard-
less of the threshold amount. In the end, whether it is average workers or self-employed citizens, virtually all Americans will be subject to this new reporting.” It may be time to have your voices heard and your finances kept private—if that is even possible. H

O
ur lives are awash in money. Almost everything we do includes a financial transaction. Finances are on the short-list of most difficult topics for couples because of the subject’s potential for discomfort and conflict. More often than not, spending expresses personal values and emotional strength; making extravagant purchases is often passionate and reveals our needs and desires. Money stress is common with couples dealing with financial restraints; the lack of financial security creates a divide, causing boundaries to be broken. Our capitalistic society exacerbates problems, which encourages adding more debt to our lives, only to be aided by the media’s efforts to stoke our desires for the next great thing they tell us we need to own. Adding to the mix is a financial industry that continuously offers easy-to-obtain credit, often to those who are not credit-worthy. Couples with accumulated debt are the norm, and it is causing serious relationship issues. The emotional burden of stress and insecurity it invokes creates a poor environment for a satisfying love relationship. Debt also reduces the possibility of building wealth and experiencing financial freedom. Partners either pool their incomes or operate
separately. The poolers have a financial advantage if they cooperate. Although, when combining resources, there is some surrender of individuality and a greater need to trust a partner. Loving while being an excellent financial team is more complex because the partner with higher income or greater control over the money will have more power. Money imbalances amplify relationship power struggles. Personal strength is required to maintain the openness of a love relationship and be a good money manager. It takes discipline to stick with a financial plan and delayed gratification to curb impulsive spending. Money choices involve risk, and saving or investing depends on each person’s risk tolerance in the relationship. Partners who struggle with insecurity and anxiety are prone to low-risk tolerance. When paired with a partner who enjoys the excitement of risk-taking, the tension between partners is sure to build and create separation. Other issues include partners who suffer low-self esteem and are susceptible to using money to feel better through compulsive shopping or gambling; behaviors that bust a budget and create financial hardship. Partners who function as a financial team can live a good life because of their compatibility concerning money. In reaching common goals, partners tend to be emotionally strong and balanced. When couples communicate and consult each other about money matters, they demonstrate respect and love for their partner. he snowflakes will begin to fall, and what the weather might not supply skiers, riders, and tubers for pleasure, blasting snow guns will coat the northeast slopes with plenty of fluff. November is for pulling out the gear you hurriedly stashed away when the weather warmed in March, now to find a broken buckle or a torn sleeve. It’s the month when the annual Boston Ski Show comes to town, and you get to decide if some new equipment might make for a lovely holiday gift under the tree. Then there is shopping and lots of it to do. Supplies will be limited because of port slowdowns and a politically made labor crisis; if this prediction comes true, you better pull your list together and start early; it will make for a relaxing holiday season. Most importantly—captured by the spirit of the season—it is the time when we reflect on our good fortune, health, and the importance of family and friends. Get out and breathe some fresh air, don’t complain about the weather—dress for it, better yet, find a winter sport that will give you the thrills and spills that make you feel a decade or two younger. Women’s World Cup Ski Racing Returns to Killington in November

ermont ski resort, Killington, the largest ski and snowboard resort in Eastern North America, welcomes spectators and athletes to the HomeLight Killington Cup. The traditional, international event will be held on Thanksgiving weekend— November 27-28, 2021. The races will be broadcast worldwide to more than 60 nations, along with national coverage across the United States.
