We’ve made it to the start of another delightful summer, and while we take the liberty to kick the season off a bit early, who doesn’t long for the sun’s warmth to wake them to another day’s pleasure?

There’s much to do, and though dark clouds sometimes fill the sky above, each day brings excitement and discovery, plus new opportunities to grow and share experiences.

It’s not to say that we won’t confront unexpected challenges, but getting outside, walking, hiking, or participating in a favorite pastime, allows for a change in perspective and the chance to find solutions to life’s issues.

May is the month families of every description celebrate Mother’s Day. Attributed to the Greeks and Romans, our modern-day celebration is rooted in the efforts of Ann Reeves Jarvis and others.

The original concept began around the middle of the 19th century when Jarvis shared in a movement to help mothers learn how to care for their children. Efforts focused on areas of the country at the conclusion of the Civil War, where reconciliation was absent. Eventually, the day evolved into an event of appreciation and acknowledgment of a mother’s importance within the family.

But, no deed goes unpunished; while Jarvis wanted

Mother’s Day to remain simple, signs of profiting grew, and the capitalization of the national holiday caused an onslaught of industries turning the special day into a commercialized sideshow.

The woman attributed to launching Mother’s Day eventually fought to dissolve the day and remove it from the calendar. Committed, Jarvis spent her resources to extinguish what she created, but to no avail; Mother’s Day is when we show our appreciation in many ways.

This month is a time for reflection; it includes taking a moment to remember those who served and assured us freedom from adversaries; their selfless sacrifice gives us pause this Memorial Day—May 29.

Giving thanks to the families of these heroes may grind against the grain of some, but the knowledge that our service men and women who fought valiantly so distractors can exercise their voices are a tribute to our fallen military members.

Hats off to those who served and the troops prepared to protect us daily.

Finally, this month we celebrate our 18th year of publishing; we have much to share about our experiences, and so if you’re interested, find our feature “Milestone,” you’ll learn of our passion and commitment.

Mothers & Their Children

Routinely, this column is reserved for issues regarding romantic relationships between couples, but with the arrival of Mother’s Day, we look at a different relationship dynamic.

Changes in child rearing and expectations of offspring have transformed the family unit— unfortunately, not for the better.

When baby boomers decided to become ‘friends’ with their children rather than toe the line and be parents, they devised various methods to overcompensate for their kid’s human frailty, lack of ambition, and disrespectful natures. In return, millennials have become resentful.

Such observations don’t condemn everyone, but many members of each generation call the other “the problem.”

Frequently referred to as selfish, entitled, and irresponsible by the media, there are indications millennials have passed on traits and behaviors to their children, causing further distrust of previous generations.

Baby boomers have inherited the term ‘toxic’ given by those unwilling to take personal responsibility for misunderstanding how difficult it is to be a parent.

These words may seem harsh to some, but speaking to a small sample, we found frustration and sadness; their comments included, “Is this what I deserve after giving my children everything?” And, “My children seem to be acting half their age; I don’t understand why?”

When meeting a family composed of three generations, post-war, boomers, and millennials, for dinner, watching a holiday meal turn into a discussion of responsibility or lack thereof was interesting.

The event began with one sibling refusing to attend the holiday meal— although invited, there was a feud over the issue of paying rent for the use of their mom’s home for personal and business purposes.

The struggling mother, who cooks, cleans, and pays the mortgage through her meager salary, asked her son to pay below-market-rate rent, albeit an increase from what he previously contributed. She explained that he became infuriated, reverted to personal attacks, and attempted to hold her financially hostage when the fee went up.

Interestingly, his contemporaries (his cousins) who came to dinner, live under their parent’s roof for free and have less financial responsibility.

During the evening, the millennials contested rhetoric reverted to blaming the ‘boomers,’ as they call them, for global unrest and associated problems in this country. The conversation caused parents to shake their heads in disbelief; they expressed the desire to lift their children up but commented they get no assistance.

Interestingly, an old and expired term was used by an adult child at the meal— it was shocking; “We’re faking it till we make it.” Surprisingly, it remains the battle cry for privileged ‘kids’ complaining about being oppressed but believing they are entitled to a comfortable station in life.

A generation of non-parenting has delivered undesired and unexpected results. It became evident while listening to conversations between millennials and their parents, 20–25 years older. It was as if the generations were speaking different languages.

Quite confusing was when personal views about the benefits of socialism were tied to less competition enabling success, while simultaneously explaining the importance of climbing the corporate ladder so they might live better than their parents.

If you find this convoluted—as I did, you might wonder how a desire to become independently successful dovetails with political and economic theory regulated and controlled by pluralistic ideology.

The parents of the new generation are unacceptably painted with the sins of the world. Colonization, slavery, recessions, inflation, student loans, the cost of education, and even the privileged lifestyles they’ve enjoyed are used as ammunition to attack the ones they are supposed to love.

Heaven forbid they are told of the challenges their grandparents faced; multiple wars, the Great Depression, and economic hardship. These factual accounts are quickly reversed and used to blame the victims—it was their doing.

Parents are generally exhausted from the continued battering and feelings of being used financially. In one case, a loving parent explained she was at her wit’s end. “It’s either me or him [the son]; I am not going to lose the little I have because he is acting like a child and refuses to be responsible. He could work and make plenty of money. He chooses to live for pennies while I fight to survive.”

As an advice column, it’s challenging to find a starting point for a discussion between the different age groups; many of the arguments are deep-seated and may never change.

There is also the issue of self-blame; parents voice remorse that while believing they did what they thought was best, all efforts seemed to have backfired, and it’s their fault for raising flawed children.

Hopefully, time will tenderize hurt feelings, and maturity will aid in understanding differences. But, in the meantime, some families are deciding to evoke “tough love” practices; and, as our single parent explained with a tone of frustration, “It’s time for my son to grow up!” H

beyond CAFFEINE

WHY COFFEE IS CONSIDERED GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

In 2018, the US was regarded as having the world’s most lucrative beauty and personal care market, worth nearly $90 billion. The lion’s share of that revenue is being made by a small group of multinational corporations that have dominated cosmetics manufacturing for roughly a century: Proctor & Gamble, L’Oréal, Unilever, Estee Lauder, Shiseido, and others.1 Hot or cold, sweetened or unsweetened, creamy or watery, humans have an affinity for their daily cup of joe. According to the National Coffee Association USA, we consume about 500 billion cups of coffee each year worldwide. In the US, as many as 63 percent of adults put down over 450 million cups of coffee daily. It’s an industry that shows no signs of slowing as new trends, like cold brew coffee (with a higher caffeine content), continues. As a dietary staple, it’s prudent to consider how coffee may affect our health since that’s probably not our first thought when reaching for that morning boost.

CANCER CONTROVERSY

Like its eggs and butter breakfast companions, not to mention alcohol, coffee has a history of debate.

Many may not realize or remember that in 1991, coffee was listed as a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). IARC based the decision on “limited evidence” that coffee may cause bladder cancer. Since then, the IARC has reversed its position, announcing in 2016 that coffee posed no cancer risk. They’ve concluded from over 500 epidemiological studies that coffee may actually have a protective effect against liver, colorectal, and uterine cancers.1,2

Illustrating the complexity of coffee, cancer concerns again arose in 2018. This time, a California judge ruled on behalf of the Council for Education and Research on Toxics, that a cancer warning label must be placed on coffee sold within the state because of high levels of acrylamide formed during roast-

ing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then stepped in and said the preponderance of evidence suggests otherwise. Said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, “Strong and consistent evidence shows that in healthy adults, moderate coffee consumption is not associated with an increased risk of major chronic diseases, such as cancer or premature death, and some evidence suggests that coffee consumption may decrease the risk of certain cancers.” With the FDA’s blessing, the state of California ended up overturning the ruling to the delight of the National Coffee Association, as well as Cleveland Clinic— a leading cancer research institute.3,4

However, the IARC did note that there may be increased esophageal cancer risk from drinking very hot coffee, as shown in studies of South American mate and tea consumption in Asia. The carcinogenic effect probably happens from beverages heated to 150 degrees Fahrenheit and above. 2

NUTRITION FACTS

What, exactly, is in a cup of coffee?

An eight-ounce cup of brewed coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine. It also contains over a thousand other compounds being studied by food scientists for their potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. For example, coffee has healthful polyphenol antioxidants, like chlorogenic acid (CGA), and natural oils called diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol), that have shown mixed results in research.6

EVIDENCE IN FAVOR OF COFFEE

A meta-analysis examines multiple studies on a topic to determine an overall effect. A 2017 umbrella review of over 200 such meta-analyses in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), was conducted by UK investigators to evaluate evidence linking coffee to human health. The researchers found that coffee was linked to more health benefits than harm.

It was found across intakes: high versus low consumption, any versus no coffee, and an extra cup per day.7

Specifically, the UK investigators found that three to four daily cups of coffee versus no coffee had the greatest health impact, including fewer deaths from all causes, lower heartrelated deaths, and decreased cardiovascular disease. High versus low coffee consumption was also linked to an 18 percent lower risk of neurological, liver, and metabolic disorders and cancer (prostate, endometrial, oral, skin, leukemia, liver, and non-melanoma skin cancer).7

Another meta-analysis was published in 2012 on the association between coffee consumption and heart failure. Five extensive studies were examined, consisting of more than 140,000 participants and 6,500 heart failure events. The researchers observed a “J-shaped” relationship between coffee intake and heart disease incidence. Compared to no coffee consumption, which showed a slightly elevated heart disease risk, four cups/ servings per day showed the strongest risk reduction (i.e., the base of the “J” on a graph), with risk again increasing as coffee consumption rose beyond four cups. This association was unaffected by sex and baseline heart attack or diabetes history. 8

In 2013, a large study of nearly 75,000 female nurses and over 39,000 male health professionals examined the association between caffeinated and caffeine-free beverages, including coffee, on type 2 diabetes risk. Study participants had no diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or cancer at baseline. After controlling for lifestyle factors, caffeinated and decaffeinated sugar-sweetened beverages were strongly linked to higher diabetes risk. In comparison, caffeine-free artificially sweetened beverages were linked to higher diabetes risk in women. On the other hand, both caffeinated and decaf coffee was linked to lower diabetes risk in women and men (four to eight percent for every added cup), as was caffeinated tea in women. The authors concluded that regardless of caffeine, sugary drinks were associated with higher diabetes risk and coffee with lower risk.9

Regarding liver disease, early research has shown that caffeinated coffee can protect the liver from cirrhosis, with four or more daily cups conferring added protection. Research from 2021, however, suggests that even decaf coffee

can help prevent chronic liver disease leading to cirrhosis. In this study from the UK, medical records of nearly a halfmillion participants showed that all types of coffee (instant, ground, and decaf) protected against chronic liver disease onset and progression.10

Research also shows that coffee promotes weight loss via caffeine. That said, a recent meta-analysis from Spain showed that over 200 mg of caffeine, or more than two cups of coffee, was needed before submaximal-intensity aerobic exercise for increased fat loss in a 150-lb person (i.e., at least 3 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight). Further, the effect was also only significant in people with no exercise history, occurred after about a five hour fasting period before exercise, and may wear off over time.11

POTENTIAL ADVERSE EFFECTS

There are also potential downsides to coffee that should be considered.

The UK researchers in BMJ note that most harmful associations of coffee were canceled out when adjusting for smoking status—except in women at increased risk of bone fractures and pregnant women. Contradicting earlier scientific thought that coffee was good for osteoporosis, the researchers found that an older woman’s fracture risk increased significantly with each cup of coffee. In contrast, the reverse appears true in men.7 Research also shows that compared to pregnant women who don’t drink coffee, those who do are more likely to experience fetal harm or loss, premature birth, or low birth weight.12

Cholesterol is another concern. If one drinks unfiltered or French Press coffee, higher amounts of diterpenes will be consumed. These can raise blood fat levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, depending on caffeine sensitivity and the volume of coffee consumed. By comparison, espresso has about half the diterpenes of unfiltered coffee, while paper filters trap most diterpenes in filtered coffee.13

Recent research suggests that coffee may raise the risk of one type of arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat. In a small, randomized trial of 100 adults with real-time electrocardiography patch monitoring, coffee was shown to cause premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). PVCs were 54 percent more likely to happen on coffee-drinking days, with risk more than

doubling after one or more cups. Meanwhile, atrial arrhythmias were unaffected, and supraventricular tachycardia incidence went down with coffee versus no coffee.14

Of course, too much caffeine is an issue for those sensitive to the drug. While the FDA considers four to five daily cups of coffee (400 mg of caffeine) safe, more than this can lead to adverse effects ranging from headaches and insomnia, to anxiety, jitters, and nausea. Further, drug interactions can also happen in people taking medications who drink caffeinated coffee.13

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or acid reflux, is another common effect of too much coffee, leading to more serious conditions like esophagitis and even respiratory symptoms.

ON BALANCE

Experts say the weight of evidence favoring coffee makes it a safe beverage choice for most people when consumed in moderation. As Gottlieb commented regarding the cancer warning label, they (FDA officials) didn’t want to “mislead consumers to believe that drinking coffee could be dangerous to their health when it actually could provide health benefits.” 3

Still, it’s prudent to be aware of other cautionary studies that may arise as more is learned about coffee. As researchers note, coffee’s acute everyday physiological effects are complex.

For coffee enthusiasts, moderate consumption is generally considered three to four cups daily. It’s advisable not to drink coffee (or tea) too hot, at or above 150 degrees Fahrenheit; it’s probably wise to stay with filtered or instant coffee to maintain healthy blood fats and be careful of too much sweetener (especially artificial). MIXED MESSAGES

In our first installment, “Mixed Messages [Part l]”— (April 2023), we addressed contemporary role models for young girls and adult women; we examined the evolution of cultural appropriateness at a time when females endure rampant misogyny due to those willing to barter their sexuality for personal and financial gain.

We omitted the use of ‘Adult Content Creator’ websites offering explicit images, designed for transactional interactions, hosted by women such as; Only Fans, Fansly, and MyGirlFund. Interactive technology has removed the tainted veil of old-school strip clubs and has replaced them with live and on-demand connections.

News and Media outlets—of all types—including individual influencers, ostensibly report issues of women’s rights when the opportunity arises; however, unabashed, they glorify and promote the sexuality and enticement of young women who launch themselves into lifestyles dominated by men, using their sculpted faces and bodies.

Having had discussions about the right of a woman to use her body as she sees fit seems to be the go-to response when these issues are approached. Still, those ill-prepared often cannot connect a sentence about the harm they project onto those who will hopefully not succeed them.

From a large body of research, it’s believed that young girls are the subtotal of visual, verbal, and non-verbal cues contributed by family, friends, and society. Other affective variables in molding a woman’s identity include genetic predisposition, which has a

preponderance of support in shaping personalities, and behavioral experiences responsible for shaping self-worth.

Career choices, education, and opportunities play a role in everyone’s development, but building a sense of morality differs between the sexes.

External prompts, signals, motivators, and comparisons become incorporated and aligned with intrinsic biological factors such as emotional and maternal impulses, causing confusion.

Unfortunately, women who struggle to develop in their formative years and into early adulthood are heavily influenced by men. The social pressures and a need (predisposition) to seek a mate for the species’ survival create a market for connection and approval, much of which can be traced back to early childhood.

With technology comes an undeniable quest to compete; social media, one of the most detrimental aspects of communication with youth, has widened the playing field for mating. An integral part of female and male development, from an early age, examples of attractiveness, desirability, and availability are constantly viewed as a measurement of self-value or worth. The issue becomes troublesome if you don’t fit the profile of the one-percenters; fear of inadequacy prevails, shaping future behaviors and personalities.

It has become apparent that generations of women are being influenced by images

Through no fault, women are manipulated into seeking partners that don’t exist, only to become disappointed and develop insecurities and doubt.

Of concern is that peer pressure will take precedence over career choices.

The need for women to become aware of the destructive influences placed around them—by both genders, is a first step in halting the unrealistic and detrimental effects upon their successful development.

Images and descriptions of how a woman should be desired and idolized for her physical attributes rather than her mind, personality, and achievements need deconstruction; once replaced with an inventory of strengths, insights, and independence, progress is inevitable.

Images of sexualization paired with unrealistic lifestyles need expulsion from a woman’s psyche, as for men, they need to realize that equality cannot exist with subordination.

Finally, the core of humanity—family, needs to be restored. As previously mentioned, values and morality are the seeds of identity development; today’s lack of critical support systems is overwhelmingly evident, as are the results of its absence. H

INGREDIENTS

1 pound frozen butter beans (also called lima beans)

1 small container of hummus

4 tablespoons olive oil

2 cloves fresh garlic

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1 teaspoon ginger

1 teaspoon ground black pepper (or to taste)

1 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)

½ sweet onion, finely chopped

Juice of a lemon half

1 medium-sized tomato, diced

1 medium-sized jalapeño pepper, thinly sliced

1 cup of Greek yogurt

DIRECTIONS

1. Prepare and put aside chopped onion, jalapeño pepper, and other necessary ingredients.

2. Boil 3 cups of water, add butter beans, and cook to soft; usually 10-12 minutes. Once finished, set aside and drain thoroughly in a colander.

3. Over low to medium heat, using the same pan as you heated the beans, add olive oil, garlic, cumin, coriander, ginger, black pepper, sea salt, lemon, and jalapeño peppers. Stir together until vegetables are translucent.

4. While the veggies are cooking, smear a desired amount of hummus onto a plate, then put a dollop or two of yogurt at 11 and 12 o’clock.

5. Return the butter beans to the heated base ingredients, stirring gently; once warmed, transfer and spread over the bed of hummus.

6. Garnish with tomatoes and see what you’ve been missing.*

Beginning as a small and local publishing company, for 18 years, we’ve reported on a broad range of subjects, visited countless locations, and covered newsworthy events often reserved for the national media.

A formidable task, from our early days, we decided to resist the ease and safety of the novice trails and search for the double-diamonds.

More interesting than the volumes of stories we’ve shared with our readers have been their responses and opinions. Early on, we learned to identify and separate vitriol and hostility under the premise of tolerance and inclusivity, as opposed to those who reflect and adhere to civil discussion.

It’s been an exciting journey; we interviewed a convicted Irish Republican Army murderer who was tortured and released from a British prison along with other notorious offenders. We followed the story and met with the US politician who orchestrated their release into American society. Oddly enough, shortly after we spoke with the former IRA member (who got drunk and publicly ID’d himself), he was forced into hiding—never to be seen or heard from again.

We discovered and reported a cover-up over the killing of a young boy due to investigator malfeasance. Frustrated, we sat and watched his family cry out tears when our coverage

couldn’t move the FBI or the State Attorney General to re-open the case; an absolute tragedy and miscarry of justice.

Closer to home, we caught the public’s attention when we exposed an employment contract of an official who entered into a secret agreement that was extraordinarily generous—but invalid—subsequently, he was terminated, which satisfied the townspeople’s need for accountability.

On the flip side, we’ve captured the warmth and innocence of a child’s sparkling smile as he saw—for the first time— Jolly Saint Nick sitting on a park bench, and have given space and praise to those who would never seek attention, but make a difference in the lives of others.

Most memorable was attending the first-of-its-kind ‘Women’s March’ in Washington, DC; an event attended by millions, we were the only regional publication to be on-site and at center stage. It was gratifying but obligatory to report the once-in-alifetime story for the public and our loyal readers.

Having met world leaders, international business titans and conducted interviews with a long list of celebrities, and entertainers, we continue our mission to bring perspective and insight to our pages.

Our objective has always been to highlight different lifestyles but not to lose sight of humanity and culture. If one message resonates from our pages, it is an unfiltered and honest account of the past, present, and future.

WILL YOU CELEBRATE OR HONOR MEMORIAL DAY?

his Memorial Day will usher in curiosity for many.

Due to noticeable generational and political differences and a transition—even weakening of our military, as a nation, we’ll pause and evaluate our personal views of those who sacrificed their lives to ensure our freedoms.

According to the online research firm statista.com, America’s concept of patriotism has declined, with the most alarming fall-off found with millennials compared to Gen X’ers and baby boomers between 2003-2011.

A Gallup poll found that in 2002, 91 percent of respondents said they were extremely/very patriotic, with 69 percent indicating they felt very patriotic. Fast forward to 2022, these numbers dropped to 65 percent and 38 percent, respectively. Interestingly but predictably, the polling giant reported that “Republicans, conservatives, and seniors were most likely to say [they are extremely or very patriotic].” It should be noted these findings aren’t opinions but rather facts reported by a reputable research firm.

They went on to say, “A 65 percent majority are still at least ‘very proud to be an American,” but there seems to be a reduction in positive national identity,

with the attrition of Independents and Republicans, which began in 2020. The pollsters noted that recent Supreme Court rulings and gun safety bills had hampered increases in national pride. Furthermore, with reports and controversy surrounding the current and previous administrations, patriotism could further splinter and suffer increasing declines through the next federal election.

Such news leaves us in a tangle of confusion and a lower, even dangerous, level of preparedness in the event of military conflict—possibly war. Fewer enlistments are being recorded, even with significant modifications in training and standards.

The origin of a day honoring fallen soldiers is attributed to Union troops who fought and died in the Civil War; however, it expanded over time. Initially referred to as Decoration Day, it turned into Memorial Day after World War II, then a nationally recognized holiday.

Acknowledging heroes and those who suffered the loss of a family member or friend are important. Disheartening is the cultural shift to commercializing a day of tribute; to lose sight or not recognize the day’s true intent, only to focus on a weekend of parties and travel dilutes the day’s meaning.

The message we need to hear is about the ultimate sacrifice made by our armed forces and should include those unrecognized because of their secretive covert service; they, too, had vital roles in protecting the nation.

Troubling is a movement towards dismantling society, built on the backs of service people. With a focus on equality and equity for all, it’s time to speak to the problems our Veterans face; continuing to be marginalized, they account for recordhigh numbers of homelessness, inadequate healthcare, and insufficient psychiatric care. They have become street addicts, invisible to an uncomfortable public.

Memorial Day is an ideal time to stop and be thankful to those who died defending the United States and the many who are on alert, ready to do battle at a moment’s notice today. All soldiers, past and present, deserve respect and dignity from society. We should recall our service people’s gifts, the opportunity to pursue our dreams, and find success, all due to their resilience and dedication.

he brilliance of motherhood is palpable when the day to honor them grows near; so does the barrage of emotional tension, hidden pain, and guilt.

Mothers, who we credit as the backbone of families and the institution of life, are the most selfless and caring members of their tribe. At the same time, they become the targets of anger, jealousy, and frustration.

An incredible feat to bring new life to the planet; a woman’s ability to accept stress, pain, and inconvenience, is a remarkable undertaking; few men would trade places with them.

A mom’s job is to keep the peace, teach, and comfort; they are dangerous when called to protect their mates, but even more perilous if potential harm is bestowed upon their children. They didn’t get the name ‘mama bear’ without cause.

Mothers are tough; they remain buoyant in the face of disappointment and disrespect, and even when feeling attacked or unappreciated, they will continue to make undue sacrifices.

These amazing women, known to have the touch of an angel and the ear of a therapist, possess the uncanny ability to forgive and forget regardless of how they hurt; the unconditional love they show and share with their children often goes unnoticed.

No one will ever be as proud of a child as their mother; the relationship is metaphysical, teetering on the realm of psychic connection—they seem to know when you’re in trouble.

Mothers are dream makers; they’ll support you, even when the odds are against success. And if you don’t make it, they’ll share praise and admiration because they know you gave it your best.

If you haven’t learned by now, your mother will always consider you a child,

even when you become a senior citizen. She’ll never cease to ask if you’re hungry, how you’re feeling, and if your spouse adequately cares for you; even if all of these questions are affirmed, they won’t believe it and ask them again the next time they see you.

It’s funny to recall the puppy, kitten, or parakeet you had to have while a child; she knew it would eventually become her pet.

Reflection of the birthday parties, your first glass of wine, and candlelight dinners she created so you’d have experience in preparation for leaving the nest remain fresh in her heart—and hopefully in your mind.

This year’s special treat is news that the event committee is co-chaired by Diana Prince and Mary Katherine Prince, members of the family that owned the Marble House from 1932 to 1963. H

Newport, Rhode Island, to Again Host World-Renowned Ocean Race

THE GLORIOUS CITY-BY-THE-SEA MAKES HISTORY AS THE ONLY NORTH AMERICAN STOPOVER THREE CONSECUTIVE TIMES!

The Ocean Race, considered the most grueling professional sporting event in the world, is headed to the Ocean State for a nine-day family-friendly celebration, May 13-21.

Sailors are heading for Newport from Itajaí, Brazil, during Leg-4 of the 5,500-nautical mile journey along the eastern seaboard and are expected to arrive in port May 10-12.

Fans are waiting to see Bristol, R.I. sailor Charlie Enright on the Newport-based 11th Hour Racing Team’s entry. Enright skippers the only American vessel in the race.

Amory Ross of Newport is participating as an onboard media crew member, accompanied by three other international men and women crew.

The focus resonating during the Ocean Race event is sustainability, a core value of the race and the Newport

stopover. Sustainability programs aim to bring awareness to ocean health issues and inspire and engage the sailing community, sports world, cities, states and countries, and visitors of all ages, to become acquainted with this critical issue.

Sail Newport, Rhode Island‘s Public Sailing Center, along with the State of Rhode Island and 11th Hour Racing, will co-host the event at Fort Adams State Park. The Newportbased 11th Hour Racing is an organization that mobilizes

sailing, maritime, and coastal communities with an innovative approach to inspire solutions for the ocean.

The Ocean Race organizers intend to hold the first climatepositive international sporting event; the Newport Stopover embraces this goal by striving to be a zero-waste event with a minimal carbon footprint.

After the event finishes at the tip of Fort Adams State Park, the sailors onboard the high-tech IMOCA 60-foot sailboat fleet will have completed four of the seven legs of the race and covered 24,800 nautical miles or 77 percent of the course. The high-tech sailboats practically “fly” over the water on J-shaped hydrofoils with speeds reaching over 40 knots.

Adjacent to the racing boats at the Sail Newport docks in Fort Adams State Park, a festival known as “Ocean Live Park” will be open to the public free of charge—from May 13-21.

“This race is a showcase of human endurance and world-class sailing,” says Brad Read, Executive Director of Sail Newport. “We’re so proud to offer the shoreside Ocean Live Park to the public for free due to the generosity of our partners and our shared commitment to keep sailing thriving and sustainability at the forefront in the Ocean State.”

Visitors will enjoy up-close sailboat racing, an immersive experience presented by 11th-hour Racing, children’s activities, outdoor family games, music, food trucks, entertainment, cocktail cafés, special events, and sailor parades.

“The 2015 and 2018 [Ocean Race] stopovers drew over 200,000 visitors to Newport and generated tens of millions of dollars in economic activity in Rhode Island,” said Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos. “I invite Rhode Islanders to come see what it’s all about in May.” H

Guests will enjoy live music, a silent auction, and numerous opportunities to support the Sunshine Kids— all at a breathtaking oceanside venue; New England media personalities Harvey Leonard and Maria Stephanos will appear at the Soiree, offering their support for a successful event.

Established in 1982, the Sunshine Kids Foundation is committed to providing positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients. They provide a variety of programs and events, free of charge, for those receiving lifesaving treatments in hospitals across North America.
