Welcome

W

ith summer’s arrival comes massive blue skies, refreshing ocean breezes, and sparkling seas; it’s a combination that makes living here so enjoyable and the envy of all who visit. While we navigate each new day’s challenges, it’s invigorating to see improvements made to our infrastructure and public amenities. During the last couple of years, towns, villages, and our small cities have made significant enhancements to the visual aspects of our environment besides offering a wide range of opportunities to attract visitors. During a recent conversation with a real estate broker, we learned that the lockdown in California and other states throughout the country has resulted in many to look to the coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island as an 12 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

alternative to high-density metro living. Those who have been guests of friends who already own secondary homes here have discovered our safe havens are an ideal choice for them and their families. The result: the real estate market is bubbling. But, this isn’t necessarily true for all areas. While interest rates are at historic lows, inventory is somewhat thin, the most exquisite properties—with exceptional value—turn over as soon as they’re listed. As odd as it may sound, we are in a dueling “buyers-sellers” market. This month we decided to improve our look so we might better reflect the refined taste of our readership, and even though your letters stream in with congratulatory comments and marvelous accolades, we don’t believe in resting on our laurels. We know you have relatively few choices when it comes to selecting a luxury living magazine to spend time with, and because

of this belief, we’ve decided to ease your pain and narrow it down to one—that would be us. For July, we satiate your need for highquality photography, thoughtful and interesting writing, and a long list of topics matching your preferences. You’ve come to understand we cast a wide net in capturing content, and that’s because our readers are far from ordinary, and they set the standard by which we publish. To remain relevant and inspiring, we concentrate on today and the future rather than repeating the past. Keeping a distance from narrowly focused themes allows us the flexibility to bring you news and commentary from the circles you’re familiar with and enjoy most. How spectacular it is to be in the heart of the summer season and know things are going to improve with each and every day. Enjoy the moment—all of them. H

Coming of Age live in interesting times.” These are not our words, but they precisely describe the torment and turbulence most people face day to day. Those unfamiliar with the paraphrasing of the Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times,” will be surprised to learn the apocryphal phrase is a juxtaposition; it is meant to sound complimentary but intended to wish someone less than peace and serenity; void of a good life. These words are a dark omen—they confirm our time of trouble and conflict, seemingly without end. Being eternal optimists, we have a unique perspective, as 14 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

many of you probably hold. We see through the violence, noise and destruction, illness and suffering, and the unscrupulous political maneuvering by inept leaders who are arguably responsible for the death of thousands of citizens, the suppression of our economy, and the denial of civil rights over decades. Some expected the worst for 2020—an election year; we foretold of its arrival and the social costs associated with it; still, no one could have predicted the unrest and indignation felt by a society being sacrificed for ideology. COVID-19 crippled us; the death of George Floyd, at the hands of four police officers, drove a collective stake through our hearts. Peaceful protesters remind us of our right to be

Maturity Will Set the Stage for the Future

heard, while the rioters and looters, make it clear that law and order is the only defense against the annihilation of society— our way of life. Each night the evening news shows the opportunists taking advantage of the country’s conflict over the past and its fictional fight for an unachievable utopian future. We stand witness to violence, robbery, and murder, attacks on the media, and the destruction of both private and public property. And, as convoluted as it sounds, many radicals are voicing an opinion, with an equal number of elected officials promoting legislation to defund or eliminate the police. In simple terms, these actions are not only outrageous; they’re the epitome of ignorance and stupidity. The gates have been left open for the wilding to take hold, and we can only surmise it is being allowed because of the Trump—Biden faceoff come November. We ask your opinion, should the public be used as pawns while hell on earth plays out until November? If this is the

intent—and we will come to a conclusion shorty, it will be viewed as a repulsive violation of our principles. Such action would be regrettable because the repercussions are to be felt for years to come. Each of us has an important choice to make; we can look to the adults and ask them to exercise their responsibility and take control from those who continue to enact their selfish and narcissistic tantrums on civilized society—under the disguise of change and equality; or we can allow the chaos and inevitable fear and turmoil to continue to embroil our families and keep us unnerved. We have been warned that it is only a matter of time before the disruptors visit our neighborhoods and deliver their messages of destruction and violence. Their notice allows us time to prepare to defend our families and property with what little protections we have—but we should expect the worst. While waiting for a midnight knock on the door or for a projectile to be hurled through the window, consider who you will call in a life-threatening situation. Will you contact Antifa? Perhaps, speed-dial for a mob who race-shames those who don’t echo their sentiments? It’s likely you’ll decide that your local police department is your best and most viable option for protecting you, your family, and property; they’ll be the ones to respond and assist. While public discourse reigns, no one should feel a need to explain themselves—it’s a right to have an opinion—and others can’t control your thoughts, although they might like to. During the strife that surrounds us, take comfort in knowing you can continue to maintain your privacy and are allowed to be silent and civil; by doing so, you are not accepting, denying, or inferring racism—as some would have you believe. Know that millions upon millions of your fellow citizens— recently polled—share these same beliefs, and they don’t feel compelled to intimidate or insinuate against the community. The future can change in a moment’s notice, and we should be prepared for this or any other unrest sure to come. We need to stay alert, report any unusual activity, and feel free to exercise our rights and privileges as American citizens, and not feel subservient because of sins of the past. Now is the moment in time when our government must answer the call for rational thinking and clarity of discussion. For too long, they have unjustly suppressed minorities with platitudes and false hope, used blame to distract from their lack of performance, and found cover for their inability to pass meaningful legislating for equality through the use of identity politics. The noise and violence are drowning out a collective voice, and until we reach a point of transparent and comprehensive bipartisanship, we will continue to live in interesting times. 8 HETTY GREEN DRIVE / 4 BEDROOM, 4 BATH / $1,395,000 / MAGGIE TOMKIEWICZ–TEAM MCM / MAGGIE@MILBURYRE.COM / 508.995.2444

It’s peculiar.

One of the most stately mansions ever built on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean is an enigma. The original home and property have always been admired—even revered, by those familiar with its history. They comprehend the wealth and privilege responsible for building such a glorious monument to success during the “Roaring-Twenties,” but also acknowledge its legacy of invention, exploration, and the sharing of good fortune with the community by its inhabitants. The vast tract of land known as Round Hill has been considered one of the most desirable properties along the SouthCoast—dating back to 1652—when settlers of Plymouth split off and purchased prime acreage from Native American Chief, Massasoit. The sale included what is now known as New Bedford, Fairhaven, Acushnet, and Westport.

20 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Home People and technology associated with Round Hill include: Hetty Green, the infamous “Witch of Wall Street;” Colonel Edward Howland Robinson Green (Ned), a man years ahead of his time, Bert and Pricilla Hill, who managed the Colonel’s airport; WMAF Radio; the Mayflower Blimp; the Charles W. Morgan; even Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In the late ‘80s, real estate developer Robert M. Desmond began the initial conversion of the property into a luxury condominium complex that was to include “Mansion Units,” off-site homes, a nine-hole golf course, sandy beach, pool, and tennis courts. Initially, the new project hobbled, locals knew about the exciting opportunity, but sales suffered; it wasn’t the level of living the market had an interest in purchasing. Looking for a fresh start, real estate broker, Marianne MacDonald, who represented Round Hill, brought on an ad agency, Turner & Company, who recently opened an office on Smith Neck Road—directly across from the project. While enjoying distant views of the Mansion from a second-story office window, the agency’s creative director developed an advertising campaign that went right to the heart of marketing to an affluent demographic audience. Within weeks, “Round Hill” was being advertised in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, resulting in hundreds upon hundreds of leads, all with the intension of owning a fabulous piece of history. Today, Round Hill continues on a journey. It boasts improved amenities, many more luxury free-standing homes, and exclusivity only found in an iconic landmark.

The Mansion Units and Oceanside Homes, represented by Milbury & Company of South Dartmouth, Westport, and Cape Cod, offer a stunning level of elegance combined with comfort and versatility. Shingled, Nantucket Style residences nestled along the historic setting possess charm and grace. Private, with unmatched common areas offering acres of natural growth in combination with manicured landscapes and a host of amenities, create masterful living spaces and a luxury lifestyle. Residents come from around the country to share eclectic pursuits and are pleased to find their expectations exceeded when it comes to personal choices and in common interests.

Home As a weekend vacation home, primary residence, or a summer-long retreat, each property has its own personality. Round Hill is considered by many to be the most exclusive residential properties in New England. With its private beaches, tennis, and golf, easy access to Padanaram Harbor, and extraordinary views of boat traffic and the Elizabeth Islands, time spent at the estate is unforgettable. The expansive green lawn leading down to the shore where peace, quiet, and an ocean breeze is a gift of life; the single pleasure of reading a book will become a ritual that only a few will experience, but cherish. The gated community feels secure and contained, but not so separated from the outside world that you feel isolated. When desired, Round Hill can be socially active and exciting. Milbury & Company have five homes for your review and invite you to contact them for a private showing of the property you find most enchanting. The representative agency and their brokers are sensitive to health precautions requested by officials and mandates ordered by the state. Rest assured, your health and safety are a priority to all associates. They will keep you safe by every means possible. A HOT REAL ESTATE MARKET DRIVES AGENCY EXPANSION BY STEVEN CHAN

nventories Decline, Market Heats Up, Brokers Unable to Return Calls. These are a few of the headlines found by those searching for a primary or secondary home. Of course, much depends on the location of interest; nevertheless, the escape from cities and highly dense populated areas are driving consumers to the pristine farms, fields, and villages of the SouthCoast and coastal Rhode Island. It’s no surprise to the local real estate market, that as soon as choice properties 26 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

are listed, and before they make it to Multiple Listing Service (MLS), full-price offers stream into brokers, sometimes causing a bidding frenzy from buyers around the country. The best homes with exceptional amenities are not always visited by potential buyers. At specific price points, those having a serious interest in moving to the region aren’t focused on the current condition of their purchase. Instead, they’re interested in a property’s potential after renovations and improvements.

Demand for luxury living and vast amounts of space never dies; in fact, it barely shows its age. Generation after generation gravitates to places where they can start a family and create a safe and satisfying lifestyle. They are on the lookout for privacy and stress free occupancy. Since COVID-19 came to our shores, followed by lockdowns and mandatory isolation, the itch that needs soothing is showing in select counties in New England; as families retreat from cities and crowded suburbs. Top agents are

noticing an exodus from high-rise condos and traditional office settings, to relaxing and all-inclusive home environments. Compounding the interest to abandon metro areas has been the lax enforcement of penal codes, and an increase in civil unrest. It’s doubtful that peaceful, public protests, contribute to a desire to leave areas of culture; but when a perfect storm of violence and discourse begins to gather strength and ridiculous tax burdens are packed on, a beachfront property begins to look like a bargain. No one knows more about today’s buyers than Broker/Owner Will Milbury of Milbury & Company of South Dartmouth—and soon to be, Westport, Massachusetts. “Am I insane to be opening a new office during a pandemic?” Milbury asked us during our interview. While it’s a bold move and a challenge, he acknowledged that when the opportunity came about, “…everything fell into place.” Milbury may be called crazy or, at the very least, a risk-taker for opening another office at this time. Still, he is conscious that he needs to keep up with demand and understands what customers are looking for in today’s market. “Our [South Dartmouth] office has been inundated with buyers seeking refuge on the SouthCoast,” Milbury explained. Those who know his team of agents from the Elm Street location agree the company has a significant work-history in Westport and has sold a considerable number of homes since the ‘80s. For over 40 years, Milbury has built a brand based on servicing a discerning clientele from around the world. He hasn’t lost his boyish charm from his days on Beacon Hill and in the Back Bay or his quest for excitement found during his annual trek to Wellington, Florida, where he follows equestrian sports while socializing with stars and celebrities.

Milbury’s insights come from a confidential list of international movers and shakers at the highest levels of power and influence. He shared his observations with us when he says, “People are tired of the cities, they come to the coast and see how much more their money can buy.” Once they compare the lifestyle to what they currently experience, the rhetorical question is simple: “Who doesn’t want to live here?” As a leading real estate professional, Milbury interacts with the other top agencies in the northeast corridor and recognizes that working together has been the secret behind everyone’s success. “We look at the market as a whole; no one owns it but, we all have a responsibility to the communities we serve, and its because we value good relationships with other offices, our business flourishes,” he added. The new office was the former home of the Westport Federal Credit Union, which shared the parking area of Lee’s Market on Main Road. Centrally located

to premier properties in the deepest parts of South Dartmouth, Westport, Little Compton, and Tiverton, Milbury & Company will be able to expand their exclusive brand by offering greater exposure to sellers and vast new inventory to buyers. Milbury’s business’ sweet spot is his mix of clients. He has those looking for an over-the-top primary residence where they can set up roots and enjoy the amenities only ocean-front communities offer and exclusive buyers who may use their palatial compound a couple of weeks during the summer—but insists on anonymity and confidentiality. While most individuals would be readying for retirement, from our conversation with Milbury, he seems to be warming up for another adventure and to continue the thrill of the hunt—for a new listing—of course. H Milbury Company/Westport is located at 790 Main Road, Westport, Massachusetts. To learn more call 508.997.7400.

ocial distancing, protesting, and other stressors of daily life are some of the reasons we don’t see relief when it’s all around us. Living on the coast with an abundance of sun, wind, and water, means we have what dreams are made of, and depending on your motivation and ingenuity, you can harness them for your health and enjoyment for a small investment. These water, sports don’t involve petroleum, you don’t need a trust fund to purchase equipment, or be a star athlete; basically, you select the apparatus of choice, take a lesson or two, and then it’s practice makes perfect. approaching the dilemma of being social, getting exercise, and enjoying the great outdoors. CHOOSE YOUR POISON—PADDLEBOARD, SURFBOARD, KAYAK, OR CANOE?

With minimal effort, you can quickly figure out the amount of stamina needed to become proficient with the watercraft of your choice. Learning the necessary skills of operation is easy, and through a graduated learning curve, you won’t feel pressured to reach outside your comfort zone to have fun. Start slowly and work your way up. At the same time, consider your objectives; do you seek inner peace, camaraderie, are you looking for a date, an adrenaline rush, or to get buffed? These goals will help you decide where to begin and likely end up.

Outdoors

BE SOCIAL—STAY DISTANT

Few sports or activities intrinsically allow space to exist between participants. Personal contact sports are out of fashion—at least for now—and so, these self-initiated activities mean you can fully participate while chatting with a friend and still maintaining a safe distance. THE SUN’S OKAY—BUT WEAR PROTECTION

Sorry to sound like your mom, but the strength of UV waves aren’t what they used to be; regardless of the excuses you have for not wearing sunscreen, its time to get a tube of SPF 50-70, and lather it on. Not doing so is so mid-century. SHAPE UP—FORGET THE DIETS

Get out on the water multiple times a week. Carrying equipment, paddling, swimming, or racing burns calories. The endurance, balance, and core strength you build while working out translates into a healthier body and better coordination. Plus, filling your lungs with fresh air has a myriad of benefits.

COME YE SINGLES—FIND A DATE

We know it hasn’t been easy; phone dates, Zoom encounters, and less than satisfying social interactions probably have you climbing the walls—so much—you embarrassingly collected phone numbers at your last protest. Seize this opportunity to get out of the house. There are plenty of locations to rent water sports equipment. And, without a doubt, you’ll find someone in a similar position.

If you long for exhilaration, then the coast of Newport is for you. Most days, the waves gently brush the shore, but if a nor’easter comes along, be ready to do battle with white water and pounding surf, it’s you against the tide. WORDS OF WISDOM—

It doesn’t matter how well you swim, or how brave you are; safety around water is vital. Be sure to leave a float-plan with a responsible person. Dinner is Served

THE BEST NEW RESTAURANT MAY BE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK BY JAMES HOLDEN

hen I realized my two favorite summer pastimes would be void of participation in 2020, I began to think about possible solutions. Surely, I don’t need a project to keep me busy, but I can’t imaging cozying up to an asphalt parking lot with a group of friends to enjoy a couple of bottles of Château Monbousquet St.–Emilion 2015, and a feast of farm-fresh produce complemented by freu de mere from local waters. 44 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Compounding my distress is to know the evening entertainment would be passing traffic and the noise it creates. The thought of these essential social activities being reduced to a carnival atmosphere has placed a damper on my enthusiasm for summer dining. Understand, I don’t blame restauranteurs; my heart goes out to all of them, they’ve had their livelihoods ripped away. I’ve watched them besieged with the ineffective option of providing takeout orders, only to be handcuffed by this next

Table

phase of opening. Restaurants are being forced to provide a safe environment while attempting to salvage their businesses with a substantially reduced volume of sales. For many restaurants, adhering to these new restrictions isn’t a choice; it is a painful necessity, less they close their doors forever. After careful consideration, the desire to extend a life-ring to independent chefs and kitchens, and plant a seed in the minds of consumers, I offer a viable alternative to the less than attractive option of “parking lot dining.” Looking back over the last couple of years, I realized my most memorable experiences of combining food and friends came from the times I attended large dinner parties— primarily—when held outside under the stars. These incredible al fresco dinners consisted of 10 to 12 people—some included old-friends, others with new acquaintances. Each lasted a minimum of three hours, included a cocktail reception with light appetizers and multiple courses. A special dessert was often the highlight of the evening. Lights were set high above the table; soft music played in the background, and servers delivered a customized menu to our delight. Wine and Champagne freely poured as well, stimulating conversations; it was always a struggle to leave. These events were held at private homes, although a few took place at historic Inns, which specialized in private affairs. Some were sponsored, others promoted a cause, and a few happened to be from social networks celebrating the season. I recall the secret which made these dinners a success; the event locations were stunning, and their themes nicely designed. Usually sophisticated, table settings included linen, candlelight, and crystal. Guests were smartly—but comfortably—dressed, as were the servers—who had been wisely trained and had measurable experience in fine dining. This combination of factors made each dinner a grand affair. With this in mind, I realized the salvation for those in food service could very well be a shift to luxury catering. This indemand service could provide; appropriate tableware, portable

ovens, and grills (although the use of a home’s kitchen comes in handy), and the knowledge their staff would jump at this opportunity because the payout is generally higher and a tip is guaranteed. Now, this is not to be confused with large-scale events where people rush back and forth with the goal of cook-serve-cleanleave; no, this type of dining is where the ease and relaxation of going out are brought to your home. Adding to all guest’s safety is less exposure to the public, distancing can be organized through seating arrangements, the menu is preplanned, and you’re able to control the size of the group (less is better). Controls can be put into place by lessening exposure to the staff through their use of PPE, and while eating outdoors, the evening air will move any vaporized organisms that might arrive unannounced. As for the issue of payment, it can be arranged before the event, and clean up is efficiently handled by the provider. By my calculations, if 5-6 couples host an equal number of soirees over a few months, each would effectively be responsible for a single event, with all remaining dinners complimentary. But what makes this arrangement unique, is the variety and creativity of each dinner. With so many choices, each themed event will build lasting friendships, memories, and are never dull—believe me when I tell you this. The concept isn’t for everyone, although it functions quite effectively, even when modified. Its basis is to control the dining experience through locations where you feel safe while lessening exposure to public spaces. This creative form of dining isn’t revolutionary; many friends and family have attended these types of affairs over the years. My purpose of re-introducing the notion of at-home entertaining is so more people will consider helping their local business community and heighten their summer fun. Stay safe. H

Eating Covid-19

HOW DIET COULD AFFECT YOUR RISK FOR DISEASE

BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.Ed.

W

hile new cases of COVID-19 are on the decline in selected states, other areas are reporting localized outbreaks. Also troubling is the potential for resurgence in the fall—coupled with the start of the flu season. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows that people of all ages with underlying health conditions, especially if unaddressed, may be at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19. These underlying illnesses include chronic lung disease and moderate-to-severe asthma; serious heart conditions; the immune-compromised (example, people undergoing cancer treatment); severe obesity (body mass index/BMI of 40 or greater); type 2 diabetes; end-stage kidney disease; and liver disease.1 Additionally, high blood pressure (hypertension) appears to be a top underlying condition contributing to COVID-19 deaths in US communities.2 50 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Besides donning PPE and keeping your distance, it’s sensical to ask what role nutrition might play in reducing the risk of serious disease from infection with the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), particularly for those over age 65 who are already living with, or on the threshold of, chronic illness. FOOD AND INFLAMMATION

Inflammation isn’t inherently bad. Acute inflammation is the body’s response to acute injury in which cytokines signal the immune system to repair damaged tissue, as well as defend against foreign bodies such as viruses. But when inflammation continues over time or happens where and when it isn’t needed, the process can become detrimental. When a burst of white blood cells rush toward a perceived threat that may not exist, they may eventually attack healthy organs and tissues.3 (There have been recent reports of a “cytokine storm” being linked to severe COVID-19.)

Living Well There is evidence that chronic low-grade inflammation throughout the body (systemic) is associated with the development of diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. For example, it is theorized that the buildup of inflammatory cells in blood vessels could eventually damage tissue and cause plaque formation. There is also evidence that poor diet significantly affects cytokine levels and chronic inflammation through changes in gut microbiota, revealed by inflammatory blood markers like C-reactive protein (though most reactive markers are more reflective of acute versus chronic inflammation).4, 5 It is estimated that as much as 60 percent of all chronic diseases could be prevented by healthy eating choices and lifestyle behaviors.6 A traditional Mediterranean-style diet is the most researched diet in the world. It has been shown useful for reducing inflammation, conferring protection against many conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. “Traditional” meaning it is centered on whole versus processed foods, and shared with family/friends (i.e., eaten slowly). The diet focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes; nuts, seeds, and olive oil for fats (the diet is 30-50 percent fat); fish, white meat, eggs, fermented dairy (yogurt, cheese); small amounts of desserts; and red and processed meat.6 Researchers believe it is the overall diet that reduces inflammation and not any one aspect. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, is another practical eating approach, particularly in light of hypertension and COVID-19. Aimed at those who need to reduce blood pressure, the diet is similar to the Mediterranean, style emphasizing plant-based foods (vegetables, fruits, legumes) and low-fat dairy, and moderate whole grains, fish, poultry, and nuts. The diet is designed to reduce sodium intake while increasing blood pressure moderating foods high in potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Over time, this eating approach can reduce systolic blood pressure by as much as 14 points.7 FOOD AND IMMUNITY

Can we fortify our immune system against foreign bodies like coronavirus through diet? Harvard Health says that because the immune system is a “system” that requires “balance and harmony,” the jury is still out as to whether we can enhance it. “Which cells should you boost, and to what number? No one knows how many cells or what the best mix of cells the immune system needs to function at its optimum level.”9 Nevertheless, they say healthy eating and other factors still play a vital role in maintaining that balance. It’s well established that malnourished people are more susceptible to

TRENDS WE’RE WATCHING BY LINDA BERTRUM

DEFUND THE POLICE — A FOOL’S ERRAND? It may sound like a good idea if you’re on the wrong side of the law, but those with human or material assets to protect— may feel differently. According to a recent poll by Politico, a news gathering and polling company, millions of people believe the police need measurable reforms. Still, they don’t feel cutting their budgets or eliminating the “force” is the answer. Results from a June survey found 59 percent of voters believe police departments—nationwide—need an overhaul; 22 percent feel there’s a need for a complete reorganization, while 37 percent would like to see significant reforms. At the other end of the spectrum, 27 percent of responders believe law enforcement needs minor changes, with a mere 5 percent 52 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

say they are content without any modifications. How does this translate to the call for defunding? Nearly 2-to-1, voters oppose the defunding of the police through massive budget cuts; 57 percent are against such action, while only 29 percent support such legislation.

A CASE WITHOUT EVIDENCE—SOTHEBY’S FIGHTS CLAIM— ENDS WITH A LOSS

SOFT ON CRIME —WHO’S RESPONSIBLE? A few short weeks ago, a 31-year-old punk was caught on video ambushing a frail 92-year-old woman causing her to hit the ground, but not before her head came in contact with a fire hydrant, sending her to the hospital. In broad daylight, the callous criminal and registered sex offender—with over 100 arrests, attacked the woman, and once he passed her, glanced back to witness the damage he had done. Once identified and arrested, the perp was released (probably due to bail reform), and was given a desk appearance—a ticket—and requested to appear in court sometime in July. What are the odds the coward will show up for the hearing? We’ll have to see if actions do have consequences.

The famed auction house Sotheby’s, drew a losing card in June when a US Court of Appeals ruled they were unable to sue the government of Greece over an ancient artifact that had been scheduled for sale. They withdrew the lot from the auction the day before the event in May 2018 over a request issued by the foreign power. Greece’s Ministry of Culture prevailed, but the decision leaves many in the art and antique world curious about the future of the market. Detail from a variety of sources indicates the lawsuit involved an 8th century BC Greek equestrian statue, formally the property of Howard and Saretta Barnet. From reports, the estimate of the sale was to garner between $150,000-$250,000. At issue is the questionable provenance of the lot. The Greek government claimed the item was obtained by the couple in 1973, from art dealer Robin Symes (previously accused of dealing in looted antiquities), while Sotheby’s maintains the position, the owners “acquired [the bronze] lawfully and in good faith…” and retained it in their collection for decades. Lying at the foot of the court was a claim by Sotheby’s that Greece failed to provide supporting evidence of illegal behavior or intent, and the auction house should not have to forfeit the pricey collectible. Without proof, the bronze horse was “smuggled,” it’s assumed damages would be awarded to the plaintiff in the matter. In a surprise reversal of fortune, the court sited the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FISA) did not have oversight of actions that involve sovereign protection of culture, and the actions of the Greek government were not of commercial interest. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | JULY 2020 | 53

The fall out of this ruling runs deep, considering the finding will cause other governments to closely monitor lucrative art and antiquities auctions, only to randomly challenge purchases. The insult to those in the trade going forward is that foreign governments won’t need evidence showing an item was illicitly obtained and should be removed from an auction catalogue. Actual ownership of high-valued, museum-quality collectibles will be under immense scrutiny, and the court’s decision will further complicate industry practices.

THE THOUGHT POLICE ARE COMING YOUR WAY— MEDIA CENSORSHIP COURTESY OF GOOGLE It seems that freedom of expression and speech are left outside the door at Silicon Valley’s Google headquarters. Recently the search-engine giant interrupted—well, actually stopped—ZeroHedge, a business/news/finance website from earning a living. The company’s advertising platform has been rendered inoperative. Meantime, Google threatened The Federalist—another online news site—the same action if they don’t eliminate what they view as “hate” speech. Who is behind this shocking headline? It appears that NBC News’ London based verification unit exerted influence for Google to check on the information found on ZeroHedge. Fingers were pointed at both news organizations based on research conducted by a group known as the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), putting the right to opinions squarely in the crosshairs of ‘Big Brother.’ 54 | JULY 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

As reports began to fly, we learned it wasn’t the “articles” found on each company’s website that caused the hair on the back of the necks of the geek squad to rise; rather, it was the comment sections of the news websites, (where followers have their voices heard—or at least read), that lead to the warnings and censorship. On face value, it seems the issue is not conservative or liberal; it’s a matter of individual rights and that of all media companies. No one should be denied their voice, nor should their writing be silenced. In the case of NBC, it’s clear they feel an obligation to kill off the competition or at least block—until dead, anyone who has an opposing view to their take on the news and opinions. And worse, they’ll do it through the most sinister means possible—cutting off the money, by blocking advertising revenue. With this accomplishment, they control the narrative. Needless to say, those who are familiar with these recent events are shocked and disillusioned with the efforts of one news agency to interfere with another because of ideology. Also, it should be noted the Senate is questioning the right of Google to play arbiter. According to Google, they have editing rights because comments made on at least The Federalist’s website is in direct violation of company policy. However, given this veiled threat of controlling what people can share, the President and Congress appears to be ready for a fight and indicated they wish to have Google’s liability protection known as Section 230 pulled for violating neutrality and political bias practices. More to come. H

A

n upsetting moment was worsened when James’ wife Katey announced their marriage had never been right. The unfortunate news was ignited when her anger was sparked by his forgetfulness—a flaw he admits to—and has been a re-occurring irritant during their 15 year marriage. James had believed his marriage was on good terms, and easily recalls dozens of pleasurable moments throughout the years; this included Katey’s many expressions of happiness and love. Yet, in this painful moment, when he challenged her to site examples to show that she was wrong, she abruptly dismissed his question with a broadbrush comment, “I was just faking it.” James felt despair; it was as if the floor had just fallen out from beneath his feet. Upon reflection, the more he thought about the conflict, the more he believed that his wife was wrong; either she had to be incorrect, or he concluded, she was crazy. James’ inner attitude interfered with his being open and close to his wife, and undoubtedly, in her pain of upset, Katey closed herself off to a significant part of the past through denial and minimization. This example is for many couples, a dangerous place to inhabit. It is littered with pain-laden unresolved issues. When a partner experiences intense feelings, they view the past through emotions rather than logic. Past intense emotional sentiments can cause the recall of events to be altered, eliminated, or recreated, generating more distorted memories. Each partner will subjectively apply distortions of past events; they will be remembered differently by each of

them. It is because of this inaccurate accounting of past events partners are quickly sucked into an escalating debate regarding the accuracy of their recall. For couples with accumulated resentment, such a debate may easily touch off volatile and hurtful arguments. To some degree, we are all historical revisionists. It is an irrational part of

being human, which makes our love relationships illogical. Our tendency to value intellect and order causes us to erroneously flag recollection as an opportunity for correction. A partner who is a serial revisionist is vulnerable to a reputation of being unreasonable and inaccurate. And, if the label sticks, he or she will have diminished status, which reduces the satisfaction of the relationship. HELP IS AVAILABLE. Love relationships are emotional connections; feeling understood is achieved through the acknowledgment of a partner’s feelings and reflecting them in a way that shows they have been received. Emotion is the language

and the currency of relating, and when moments of emotional intensity ramp up, the past becomes distorted, and two potential reactions diverge. Couples will either focus on the distortion or attend to the pain responsible for the misunderstanding. If compassionately attending to the painful feelings presented, couples can immediately strengthen both their connection and the relationship. However, taking the wrong path—by correcting the partner’s journey into the past—usually results in explosive conflict and complete disconnect. The present is the place where couples best connect. They are empowered to resolve their problems and to heal. They are choosing to stay focused on the here and now and take advantage of the possibilities of bonding by deepening the relationship connection. Conversely, the past does not possess such valuable potential; it is challenging to accomplish emotional healing when a distorted history is used to build a case of past failures. Defending ourselves win little reward and only add heightened hostility and more significant disconnection during a heightened emotional state. It is by accepting the partner’s pain that we learn how understanding and healing will come to fruition. The secret of a loving relationship is the appreciation of the whole partner, to enjoy their best qualities, as well as having an appreciation of their frustrating idiosyncrasies. If we reject or select only some aspects of our partner’s personalities, we ensure the relationship will be more like a battlefield than one of love and caring. a communicable disease, though a causal relationship between malnutrition and increased susceptibility to infectious disease, they say, has yet to be elucidated. There is some animal research that deficiency in zinc, selenium, iron, copper, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, C, and E affects immunity. However, its impact on animal health and how this applies to humans is less clear. A systematic review of 82 studies suggests that 1-2 grams/ day of vitamin C, 400 IU/day of vitamin D, zinc supplements/ lozenges within 24 hours of symptoms onset, and echinacea (2,400 mg/day over four months) may be effective at preventing and reducing the intensity of common colds. According to the researchers, the evidence is “so interesting that common cold patients may be encouraged to try them for preventing and treating their colds,” though more research is needed.10

Harvard scientists aren’t against taking a daily multiple vitamin/mineral supplement, especially for people averse to eating a healthy diet, though they advise against mega doses. But they frown on taking supplements in an attempt to boost immunity. “Demonstrating whether an herb—or any substance, for that matter—can enhance immunity is, as yet, a highly complicated matter. Scientists don’t know, for example, whether an herb that seems to raise the levels of antibodies in the blood is actually doing anything beneficial for overall immunity.” ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIVING

Besides eating a colorful and balanced diet, health experts echo a familiar mantra: regular physical activity, reducing psychosocial stress, 7-9 hours of sound sleep, controlling weight, and spending time with loved ones. Additionally, watching for known environmental and industrial toxins that can trigger inflammation is advisable.5, 6 With more time spent at home these days, eating healthier or increasing, physical activity may be more challenging. Generally, it takes 21 days to form a habit and 90 days to make it a lifestyle.
