Welcome

A

n old belief was that when August arrived, it was a mad dash to the finish line so we could play out summer’s final days. But that mood is changing, contributed to our collective experiences over the last couple of years. Not succumbing to the belief that Labor Day is the end of the season, the “new society” rocks until the mercury drops! And why shouldn’t we? Even though the days shorten, the best weather of the year is ahead. New England is known for extending summer well into September, and while the kids might interfere with plans as they prepare to return to school, what doesn’t get in the way of pleasure? Life is about priorities, balance, and making the best of every situation. Summer is a mindset, and we should know, we started celebrating at the end of April and won’t stop until frost covers the ground. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | AUGUST 2022 | 15

T

he SouthCoast of Massachusetts, with its intricate contour of peninsulas, inlets, and deepwater harbors, allure travelers and those interested in a new journey; its many luxurious homes and estates have turned the ‘sleepy’ villages, towns, and farmlands, into unparalleled sanctuaries for those seeking summer pleasures, without the traffic and congestion of other coastal locations. Of particular interest is a new listing located at the entrance of the Little River estuary in the prestigious town of South Dartmouth. The turn-of-the-century compound, centered on nearly 9-acres of shoreline, and complimented with dramatic ocean views appearing to go on forever, makes it one of the most exclusive residential properties available along the coast. Commanding attention, and awe, the magnificent estate, boasts living quarters in the main home of over 6,300 square-feet. The property includes a carriage house, a threebedroom guest home, and three rentable or guest cottages nearby. Of unique importance is that the primary residence, guest house, and

16 | AUGUST 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

three cottages are separately deeded properties. The homes breathtaking aesthetic, rivals others in this luxury living standard. Retaining its charm, the old-world appeal combined with modern curated amenities are the perfect blend for formal and casual living. Picture perfect from every angle, the deep-water dock extends the home’s intrinsic beauty beyond the shore, offering a wide array of options for enjoyable summer sports and activities. The grounds are immaculately groomed and complemented by new and old growth, local wildlife, and native flora. Other desirable features include an in-ground gunite pool, bluestone terraces, water views through large banks of windows, and French doors allowing an abundance of sun-drenched light to fill the residence. And, to take the chill away late in the season, there are five fireplaces to warm the soul. The character embedded in the Little River community is reminiscent of another era; nearby is the Round Hill Mansion, built by Edward Howland Robinson Green, ‘Colonel Ned Green,’ made notable by his mother, Henrietta Howland Robinson, ‘Hetty Green,’ who was once the wealthiest woman in American, and known as the ‘Witch of Wall Street.’

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | AUGUST 2022 | 17

Today, the mansion and surrounding property have been developed into a private luxury community. The estate at 238 Little River Road is nothing less than dramatic and is ideal for celebrating a life well-lived with friends and family. H The one-of-a-kind estate is listed for $12,950,000 by Milbury and Company Real Estate, located at 304 Elm Street, South Dartmouth. Appointments are being scheduled for private tours for qualified buyers. Luxury Lifestyle

THE EMBODIMENT OF LIFE;

*The M/Y Lady S is not available for charter in US waters.

I

t’s surmisable to believe that arriving at a station of personal satisfaction varies between individuals, while at the same time, it appears the public’s thirst for luxury living is unquenchable. For example, as investors face disorder in the markets, geopolitical affairs sit at the cusp of detonation, with domestic instability at the forefront; all signs indicate wealth, glamour, and travel are flourishing. Predictions were made, as we came off the worse pandemic in modern history, that societal shifts and expression of relief would be witnessed through the lens of intense personal interactions—moreover, enhanced sexual expression would rise and be the most talked about topic—post-COVID. Could these premonitions have been fallacious, as we see an optic more in line with 26 | AUGUST 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

a shopping frenzy? Suspect that the country’s underlying fiscal health is resilient, evidence demonstrates heightened prosperity, contributed to an aging population. On July 18, top-tier investment banks announced gains in the last quarter while holding solid positions during the current fiscal storm. On July 1 of this year, Porsche Cars of North America reported that in Q2 of 2022, US retail sales rose 2.8 percent over the same period last year. In a statement issued by Porsche, President and CEO Kjell Gruner says he is setting his sights on a strong future for the exotic car company, “Our order books are full as we attract new and returning customers to the Porsche brand.” Familiar with the adage, “follow the money,” there doesn’t seem to be any lack of it in the yachting industry. Marinas are full; mooring fields have

waiting lists reserved for a generation away, and charters are one of the top choices for luxury vacations. A recent analysis by Grand View Research (GVR), specialists in market intelligence studies ensuring relevant and fact-based research across a range of industries, including yachting, automotive, and transportation, predicts, based on a market valuation of $8.50 billion in 2021, future expansion growth in yacht sales will track at an annual rate of 5.4 percent from 2022 to 2030. GVR concluded, “The demand for yachts has gradually increased in the last few years, owing to the increase in disposable income of individuals and their inclination toward leisure or recreational activities. The growing preference of travelers for luxury tourism, personalized service, and exclusive traveling are the primary factors propelling the sales of yachts.”

YACHT CHARTERING IS BOOMING

From celebrities and superstars to highnet individuals and families, who have generated new wealth through the real estate boom, and other lucrative investments, are heading out to sea for the ultimate luxury vacation. One mega yacht preparing and booking itineraries outside US waters for early autumn to the end of spring in 2023 is *M/Y Lady S, currently laying over at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard. The classic styled, 150' Benetti vessel of-

fers charters in the Bahamas and Caribbean with fees for a week’s voyage beginning at $130,000, plus expenses and gratuities. The impressive luxury vessel was refitted with opulence and state-of-the-art equipment in 2018. The ship accommodates ten guests in five staterooms— served by eight crew members, offering tranquility and sophistication, punctuated by a pampered and relaxing atmosphere of uncompromised enjoyment and a celebration of life. Lady S includes all modern conve-

niences and every recreational amenity imaginable. And, after a day of pleasure and satisfaction, guests enjoy sipping Champagne as the sun sets and the Chef masterfully prepares gourmet cuisine, served alfresco on the open stern or in lavish style on the bridge deck dining area off the main salon. For more information regarding yacht chartering, visit globalyachtconcierge.com. Luxury brands are strong, with demand building and supplies dwindling; it is the fruit of economies. A question remains, will our appetites for luxury and style become satiated? Collectible watches, jewels, designer clothing, shoes and accessories, restaurants with month-long waiting lists, and premium spirits and cigars are sought after by those pursuing indulgence. Considering there’s always another tread up on the path to achieving a higher degree of bliss and the satisfaction of meeting an objective, it’s doubtful. What’s left is a personal choice in determining the value of experiences over arriving at an end. Living well is the direction society has chosen. Without apologies, those partaking should be proud of the economic engine they maintain and is responsible for stabilizing fiscal uncertainty in challenging times. Highclere Castle Gin,

H

In A Class By Itself

ighclere Castle Spirits Company, and its association with the legendary English estate that served as the setting for the renowned HBO Series Downton Abbey, has created what they intended to be, “The Perfect Gin.” Happily to report, they have succeeded. Utilizing botanicals grown in Highclere Castle gardens and distilled at Langley Distillery, England’s oldest gin distillery dating to the early 19th century, the super-premium gin was launched in 2019 after four years of development. Not long after its release, Highclere Castle Gin accumulated 62 prestigious awards and international praise for its excellence! The gin’s unique recipe combines juniper, lime flower, orange peel, angelica, cassia bark, cardamom, oats, and a hint of lavender, initially planted in the gardens by the Bishop of Winchester in the 9th century, to deliver an extraordinary experience in taste, tradition, and history. The gin’s light scent, mild flavor, and subtle finish result from proper management and oversight of the botanical gardens by the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon to this day. Highclere Castle Gin is entrenched in 150 years of entertaining and hosting brilliant social events; it delivers a smooth taste, creamy palate, and a sense of royal convention. With a single taste of the super-premium gin, its exclusivity becomes apparent. Distributed to over 4,000 prestigious liquor stores, hotels, and restaurants globally, the pace of its entry into the United States has only begun and is lifting off to a stratosphere reminiscent of the world’s most celebrated brands of premium liquors. According to Co-Founder & CEO of Highclere Castle Spirits Company, Adam von Gootkin, headquartered in

Essex, Connecticut, “Highclere Castle Gin possesses “Heritage, Pedigree, and Authenticity, something missing from most liquor products on the shelves.” H For a taste of history, visit highclerecastlegin.com, or see your retailer and ask for “The Perfect Gin.”

Golden Rule Honey—

The Best Bees Make & Money Can Buy

T

he claim is not hyperbole; it is an exacting description of the taste and value found in Golden Rule Honey products. Discovered at the outdoor marketplace at Boston’s SOWA weekend festival—at closing time—curiosity stirred when Laurie Herboldsheimer began tearing down her retail pop-up of honey, displaying unusual color and texture. Her nectars packed in the tiniest containers to mammoth bell jars were nearly sold out. Herboldsheimer began the business of bees in 2008 at her home in Leominster, Massachusetts, the birthplace of Johnny Appleseed. She is an earthy free spirit who is delightful to speak with and unfathomably knowledgeable of her trade and products. She eagerly offers visitors to her booth to try samples of her wares, which she claims are the most delicious, raw, varietal, single-sourced honey on the market. And, after a taste, in complete honesty, nothing is better than Golden Rule Honey! So much so—you’re hooked and will never purchase any substitute. Golden Rule Honey represents beekeepers (Herboldsheimer, herself one) from geographical areas that produce unique flora, resulting in vastly different nectars that rival mass-produced honey in every aspect. Heboldsheimer explains that what differentiates the brands she represents is that “…they are unfiltered and never heated above the temperature inside the beehive. Besides killing naturally occurring enzymes, heat destroys the esters of the plant nectars that give honey its complex flavors and can also make it taste bitter. We have invested in special equipment that allows us to bottle our honey without going beyond hive temperature, even when the honey is crystallized.” Commercial honey cannot compare to those sold by

32 | AUGUST 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Golden Rule Honey. Harvested from hives in Vermont, New York, and Arizona, each offers a fresh and enchanting taste that bears no semblance to most store-bought brands. But, if you want the Champagne of honey, you have to try—and you will buy our favorite, Costa Chica Ozxaca Mexico Honey—it is beyond comparison. Beekeepers work in a region between the mountains and sea; its remoteness allows for undisturbed pollination in a near-perfect climate. According to Herboldsheimer, and we agree, “The wild native flowers of Costa Chica cause the honey to take on a spicy, but not hot flavor, with notes of fennel, anise, and licorice, a citrusy undertone, and a slightly crunchy texture.” This brand is trendy for making lemonade and Bees Knees cocktails (be sure to use only Highclere Castle Gin and fresh-squeezed lemons) and is breathtakingly delicious when drizzled over sliced avocado sprinkled with crushed roasted shelled pistachios. olo is a game steeped in history, dating back to the 6th century B.C. Later, in the mid1800s, members of the British military stationed in India caught wind of the game; its appeal was massive, with the sport extending into parts of Europe, South America, and Australia by 1874. In the summer of 1876, polo found a home in Newport, Rhode Island, by an aristocratic society. Modern polo is a sport reflecting an incredible amount of endurance and fitness from horse and rider; it is also a fantastic spectator event where crowds from near and far come together to eat, drink, and socialize among beautiful natural settings. For many, it instills a sense of community and goodwill. Put away the notion that polo is for wealthy elites; yes, if you’re a player, it takes a significant investment to participate, but a day in the sun watching riders and ponies race around the field is less than you spend to ride a roller coaster— and much safer. Many who attend matches wear their finest, while others take a more casual

look; still, the attire of most is better than you’ll find at many outdoor occasions. Today, polo matches are more of a festival of like-minded people who are the nicest you’ll ever meet. Many long-lasting friendships and business deals have been made over a few bottles of Veuve Clicquot or a few Stella Artois’. Audiences have changed over the years, but there remains a feeling of nostalgia, witnessed by the elaborate tailgating of guests and the elegant seating under the tented pavilions. Still, many guests prefer to set up tents and tables and turn the day into a party. There is plenty of summer left to enjoy a sport that has taken off with a new generation, so don’t be shy or worry you won’t know what to do when you get to the field; every weekend is a co-mingling of new faces and veterans of the sport, who will answer questions and make you feel at home.

T

hrough a collaboration with Newport Curates and Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design, the Sarah Langley Gallery of the Hammetts Hotel exhibited the work of American realist painter Jessica Brilli throughout July. Art lovers were able to meet the artist on July 1st, a balmy summer evening kicking off the Fourth of July weekend. Brilli’s work is influenced by 36mm Kodachrome slides and vintage photographs of American life that she buys, mainly off eBay and at flea markets. She’s generally attracted to images that bring back memories, often of her childhood. Brilli, who uses acrylic and oil on wood panels and canvas, does not typically paint a photograph as it is, but instead chooses the details that are important to her and removes distracting elements. And though she is clearly a storyteller by the sparsity of detail, she encourages viewers to connect with memories and weave their own stories. Her work is, in this sense, a trigger.

38 | AUGUST 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

American realist painter Jessica Brill

“As Newporters,” says Marie Samuels of Newport Curates, “we are steeped in nostalgia. Our community has the obvious vestiges of the past everywhere you look. The antique car museums, the gilded age mansions, and the traditional beach clubs still prevail. So, when given the opportunity to show Jessica Brilli’s paintings of bygone memories and vintage summers, we were sold. Retro summer seems a safe place to stay awhile, and her work invites us to do so, even if for a moment.” Jessica Brilli was born in 1977 and lives in Quincy, Massachusetts, just a few miles outside Boston. She grew up in Sayville, Long Island, and one can see the influence of mid-century modern architecture in her paintings from her childhood environs. “The cars proudly displayed on driveways, the meticulously manicured lawns, inviting neighbor’s pools, and 1960’s architecture were the backdrop of my youth,” says Brilli. “Though I don’t live in this setting anymore, I still feel a significant connection to it.” Part of that connection is played out in her day-to-day living by the car she drives, a 1984 BWM 533. Along with a BFA in painting from the University of Rhode Island, Brilli has a background in graphic design with a degree from the Massachusetts College of Art

and Design in Boston. Graphic design plays into her artwork beautifully. She employs long smooth lines to draw the eye and frame her well-thought-out compositions. Manufactured details are given straight, crisp lines, while organic elements, like clouds, water, and hills, are looser. Shadows are often geometric blocks of dark color. Another essential element of her work is how she employs color to evoke memories. “When looking at vintage photography, I see the color as a built-in time stamp. Different types of film age in various ways because of unstable color dyes—the faded color scheme adds a Gestalt effect that evokes these nostalgic feelings,” says Brilli. Though most of the photographs that inspire her were taken before she was born, they still act as a memory prompt, and the faded colors of the photographs are an integral part of that. Many of Jessica Brilli’s pieces are quiet or “static,” like her clock radio series bearing that title, as well as cars and buildings.

However, there is a lot of dynamic movement in her pieces with water, such as in her pool paintings and the centerstage painting at the Hammetts, Apparent Wind, Wind, of a sailboat moving through the ocean. One can practically hear the water slapping against the boat or slopping against the side of her pools. Brilli’s work has been recognized and respected domestically and abroad. Her paintings have been featured in solo and group shows throughout the United States and South Korea. Most recently, Brilli was named a 2021 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grantee. “Jessica Brilli’s paintings are fresh, stylish, and smart—treating the viewer to the high style and design of another time through beautifully composed canvases and well-chosen subject matter,” says Newport gallery owner Jessica Hagen. “Remarkably, Brilli’s images resist the tug of nostalgia and instead convey an irresistible, engaging and relevant cool vibe.” H To view the artist’s work, visit JBrilli.com.

supernatural tale, blended with reality and flavored with unsolvable intrigue— until the very end—teases audiences with little relief throughout the six part mini-series based on the best-selling novel (2017) by Sarah Pinborough. Twists, turns, adult themes, and all the evidence you almost need to figure out the diabolical ending are savory snacks for a blockbuster reveal. I dare not spoil a single moment in the film that should be served as fresh as possible and left unseasoned by omitting details and events. sleuths to solve this complex puzzle. I can share that Behind Her Eyes details the paths of a psychiatrist and his wife (you can already tell it‘s good), a tenacious single mom, and an awkward patient who befriends the wife while housed together in a secure mental health facility. To fully enjoy this intellectually challenging picture’s ending, watch it without interruption because any scene missed will dilute critical information and leave you confused. Adding to the appeal of binging on Behind Her Eyes are the detailed sets, toptier production quality, exquisite dialog, and the timing of delivery. But, with all of this dressing, praise must be given to the talented Irish actress (daughter of

Bono from U2), Memphis Eve Sunny Day Hewson, who uses Eve Hewson as her stage name in the role of Adele. And while credit must go to Simona Brown, who plays Louise—the single mother— the punch that hits the gut is found in Hewson’s acting. She carries the suspense and drops a bombshell on viewers. Behind Her Eyes is peculiar, even eccentric, when the spiritual enhancements are introduced; however, they are pivotal in bringing the mystery to fruition. This dark and enthralling fictional account of love, and adultery, with an inexplicit view of carnal desires between the characters, will leave you shocked and filled with consternation, all of which makes Behind Her Eyes a must see film! SUMMER IN THE RAW Enjoying Healthy Seafood & Staying Safe

S

BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.ED

eafood aficionados sometimes refer to the waterborne apples of their eye as “fruits of the sea.” It’s an expression well-founded. Seafood not only appeals to the senses but is known for its health-promoting properties in both adults and children. Low in calories and rich in high-quality protein, many fish, like salmon and sardines, are high in the omega-3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are most common in seafood. And many of people’s favorite kinds of seafood are a good source of macro and trace minerals, like phosphorous, selenium, potassium, zinc, iron, magnesium, iodine, and copper.1 While these traits have begun to hook more people worldwide, seafood overall has never been as popular among Americans as beef and chicken and has been declining since 2004. Seeing this, the US Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture now advise Americans to increase their seafood consumption to two servings per week.1 Although US per capita seafood consumption rose during the pandemic as more people cooked seafood at home, only 10-20 percent of Americans still meet the federal recommendation of 8 oz. per week. For the past several decades, most of us have hovered around 5 oz.2 Nonetheless, for all who enjoy their local sea fruits or want to become healthier, it’s important to remember that seafood is not entirely without risk and does pose unique threats.

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | AUGUST 2022 | 49

SEAFOOD POISONING STILL A CONCERN

On June 5, 1990, six commercial fishermen on the Georges Bank sat down to what they thought would be a good meal: boiled blue mussels they had just harvested in deep water, baked fish, cooked rice and potatoes, green salad, and other delectable items (no alcohol was included). Within 1-2 hours, the men developed symptoms of PSP, or paralytic shellfish poisoning, from the mussels that had been cooked for 90 minutes. Symptoms ranged from facial numbness and vomiting to lower back pain. One man temporarily lost consciousness. Two of the men required several days of hospitalization to recover. Upon investigation, levels of saxitoxin in the mussels were 24,000 micrograms/100 grams (raw shellfish) and 4,280 micrograms/100 grams (cooked) versus a maximum safe level of 80 micrograms/100 grams.3 The men were fortunate to survive the potentially lethal, heatstable neurotoxin. They had never received a state notice that the Georges Bank had already been closed to shellfishing from a prior PSP incident and state sampling survey. Albeit more extreme, the outbreak is an example of seafood’s potential danger if care is not taken. Decades later, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics show that food poisoning remains a public health hazard. Each year, some 48 million Americans (about 1 in 6 people) develop foodborne illness, of which 128,000 end up in the hospital and 3,000 die. In 2019, the American Association of Poison Control Centers logged over 800 incidents of seafood poisoning, though there were no deaths. While anyone can become food poisoned, people at higher risk include those 65 and over or under 5 years of age, people with compromised immunity, and pregnant women.4, 5 The CDC says seafood that causes food poisoning are raw or undercooked finfish and shellfish, or other foods that have raw or undercooked seafood inside them, like sashimi, sushi, and ceviche. Shellfish can contain harmful bacterial and viral threats—some of which can be lethal, like vibriosis. Raw or undercooked oysters, for example, can harbor Vibrio bacteria that can lead to vibriosis. Oysters can also contain norovirus if they come from contaminated waters.6 Scombroid happens when you ingest spoiled fish that wasn’t chilled properly after being caught, causing bacteria to build. The bacteria then cause the amino acid histidine to convert to scombrotoxin (histamine). Cooking kills the bacteria, but not the his50 | AUGUST 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

tamine. Histamine can vary depending on the part of the fish, so not everyone eating the same fish may get sick. Scombroid tends to happen in fish with dark meat, having naturally higher levels of histidine, such as tuna, mackerel, sardines, herring, anchovies, and bluefish.7 PSP toxin can arise because of harmful algal blooms. In large enough numbers, the offending red-brown dinoflagellates can produce the “red tide” phenomenon often seen in warmer months. PSP happens more often in colder waters, such as around New England, and can occur in clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, and cockles, as well as crabs and lobsters.8 STAYING SAFE

For safest consumption, the CDC advises that all seafood be cooked to 145˚ F and leftover seafood to 165˚ F (internal temperatures).6 As a rule of thumb, finfish flesh cooked well will turn opaque and separate easily with a fork, while shellfish shells will open.9 On their webpage, “Selecting and Serving Fresh and Frozen Seafood Safely,” the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) outlines invaluable tips, such as buying the right fish and shellfish, proper storage and separation during preparation, cooking, and serving. When selecting fish, for example, look for a fresh and mild smell (not “fishy,” ammonialike, or bitter). The eyes should be shiny and clear. Whole fish should be odorless, with firm flesh and red gills; fresh fillets should be firm to the touch and spring back when pressed, with red bloodlines (red flesh if tuna). Fresh fish fillets should have no discoloring, darkening, or drying. Scallops, shrimp, and lobster meat should be odorless, clear, and pearl-like in color when selecting shellfish. Live lobsters and crabs should have leg movement since they spoil quickly following death. Live oysters, clams, and mussels will close their shell when tapped; if they don’t close, don’t choose them. Live (in-the-shell) shellfish sacks or containers should have tags, and shucked shellfish packages or containers should have labels, indicating their harvesting and processing have met national standards. Discard any cracked or broken shells. Eating seafood raw is never recommended for high-risk individuals: people with weak immune systems, adults ages 65 and over, children under 5, and pregnant women. For everyone else who’s healthy, experts advise choosing previously frozen fish. Freezing kills any harmful parasites, though it doesn’t kill all pathogens.9 Raw seafood is only advised with trustworthy seafood markets that follow proper safety practices and have fresh, highquality products. Choose only reputable restaurants for eating

raw seafood when dining out. High-risk individuals should be wary of raw or undercooked menu items such as sushi, sashimi, raw oysters, ceviche, tuna tartare, and tuna carpaccio.9 The FDA notes that even if raw oysters are treated after harvesting, harmful pathogens can remain. Culinary writers say part of the appeal of a raw bar is fresh food, where uncooked foods are eaten for greater vitamin and mineral intake. To keep seafood fresh and safe, raw bar eateries must adhere to strict safety rules and follow the Hazard Analysis and Control Points Protocol of food safety. Food storage equipment must maintain temperatures that guarantee low bacterial growth, and aged food must be rotated out. When choosing foods, owners must be able to recognize seafood that is safe to eat based on age, storage, and where it was harvested.10 Though PSP toxin can’t be killed by cooking or freezing, consumers can feel confident buying shellfish from established fish markets. The State of Massachusetts ensures consumers are aware of shellfishery closures, by closely monitoring water and sediments for PSP toxins. When levels are above 80 micrograms/100 grams, cities and towns are notified, and the areas are closed until the red tide subsides and shellfish have had time to purify themselves. During red tides, shellfish are instead harvested from clean waters. Moreover, fish markets are closely scrutinized by public health inspectors.11

Seafood poisoning is rare, but typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and cramps. As for PSP, numb mouth and lips, breathlessness, irregular heartbeat, and weakness are prevalent. People who suspect they’ve eaten toxic shellfish are advised to seek immediate medical attention. In Massachusetts, PSP poisoning should be reported to either the Center for Environmental Health, Food Protection Program, at 617-983-6712 or to the Center for Hospitals and Clinical Laboratories, Bureau of Communicable Disease Control, at 617-983-6800.11 H 1. Intimacy

DECODING

BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

54 | AUGUST 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

ove is essential; a life without it is incomplete. It is an emotion associated with contradictions; it can seem incredibly complicated yet, simple—we desire to love and to be loved—even though it causes frustration and disappointment. The dating app industry is worth over $7 billion, while the divorce business is estimated at over $11 billion; these numbers suggest we are not good at loving. These calculations show that more money is spent getting rid of partners than finding them. Love is often debated because it’s mistaken for other qualities and characteristics; it’s also hard to define. The concept of love can be confused with feeling good because when we fall for someone, we experience elation— a delightful sensation. The hard truth is that love is not the feeling but what it produces. It can be mistaken for dependency, security or attraction, infatuation, or desirability; each feels good and is part of the connection that love helped build. For most, love is determined on an “I know it when I feel it” basis. It’s enigmatic and might be best known by what it is not. Then, there is unconditional love, perfection for which we strive to achieve. Partners hope for the experience of perfect love, an unrealistic expectation that is encouraged by the sweet and blissful honeymoon period in most nascent relationships. In our hearts, we hope and dream of pure love.

Unconditional love is perfect love; it is complete and well beyond the realm of most incomplete human lives. Comfort comes from the fact that each romantic connection holds the unrealized potential for unconditional caring. Couples who understand that it takes actions and efforts which encourage, support, and nourish another’s well-being and growth while protecting a partner from harm can be successful. Feelings guide love while at the same time they offer restrictions. The act of loving awakens unresolved pain from early life. We feel good when we are loved and, when not, miserable. If we act how we feel all the time, such actions will be unloving, and for this reason, a long-term relationship requires effort and will sometimes be uncomfortable. Emotions are like the weather, always changing; perfect love is symbolic of the sun, constant and continuous. Letting our feelings guide our actions produces a very conditional kind of love and poor relationships. The factor distinguishing pure love from impure love is the degree to which it is free from self-interest and selfinvolvement, also known as selfishness. When a partner receives undivided unselfish attention, the loving is potent and fulfilling. Love flows from deep within us, from beyond ourselves. Therefore, we are responsible for blocking the love the way a lamp shade prevents light from shining. Loving attention heals and fosters growth; it simplifies and unifies. Our love relationships are where we practice and refine our techniques. Let go of yourself and make it about your partner. If both of you do this, you’ll experience the magic of love. H Andrew Aaron, LICSW, is a sex and relationship therapist who practices in the New Bedford Seaport.

San Miguel School In Providence, Rhode Island Receives Key Grant From BayCoast Bank

I

nspiring a culture of belonging is essential in today’s changing world. Schools are places where students need to feel seen, heard, and valued for who they are and the unique talents and interests they bring to the table. Positive educational experiences impact a child’s life not just today but for years. For these reasons, BayCoast Bank has announced a grant to the San Miguel School in Providence, Rhode Island, supporting their efforts to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the classroom. “The grant from BayCoast gives us the opportunity to work with a professional DEI expert to delve deeply into topics

that impact our school and programs. While we are confident that our school model works, we strive to always be learning how we can do things even better,” said Mel Bride, Director of Development at San Miguel School of Providence. “Lynn Bowman, an experienced teacher and administrator, has been selected to fill this vital role,” said Bride. “Having her at San Miguel School will be important for the young men in our care as well as for their teachers and families. Our goal is to be the most welcoming and supportive place we can be by recognizing where we are strong and where we may be falling short from an equity perspective.”

Providing a high-quality, holistic education for boys from diverse and challenging backgrounds is the mission of The San Miguel School, which currently serves 64 students in grades 5-8 and has over 350 alumni. “We are thrilled to provide this important $30,000 grant to the San Miguel School,” said Nicole Almeida, Senior Vice President, Chief Diversity Officer for BayCoast Bank. “Learning about our differences allows students to explore perspectives and opinions they may not have otherwise considered, giving them an opportunity to think critically and examine the world in fresh new ways. This lays the foundation for meaningful conversations, which can foster stronger relationships and understanding.” H

South Coast LGBTQ+ Network Receives Grant From BayCoast Bank For New Community Center

T

he ability to realize one’s full potential—without limitation—is critical in today’s world, and due to these sentiments, BayCoast Bank has announced the South Coast LGBTQ+ Network (The Network) is the beneficiary of a $300,000 grant for the development of a new Community Center in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The development of The Network’s new Community Center is the culmination of a monumental goal—to strengthen the organization’s commitment to the most vulnerable in the LGBTQ+ community while bringing all people together in a

welcoming space that promotes peace, understanding, and unity. “Given the extreme challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces today, our goal to create a safe, inclusive, and permanent space where LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive in the South Coast is more important than ever,” said Andy Pollock, President of The South Coast LGBTQ+ Network. “With the generous support of BayCoast Bank, we are closer to seeing a dream come true.” The new Community Center will offer mental health and wellness programs, professional development, and financial literacy training for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Educational services relating to diversity, equality, and inclusion will also be offered to local organi-

zations to promote respect and awareness. “BayCoast Bank is proud to support the South Coast LGBTQ+ Network and its commitment to improving lives,” said Julie Ramos Gagliardi, First Vice President, Corporate Giving and Community Relations for BayCoast Bank. “The new Community Center will help those who are most vulnerable get the support they need and deserve, without having to travel to Boston or beyond for these essential services.” The historic building purchased to house The Network’s new LGBTQ+ Community Center was originally constructed in 1908 and is currently undergoing significant renovations to become a contemporary, better-equipped space. Those renovations are expected to be completed in 2023. H
