Heading into Spring

s you would expect, we’ve been diligent in exploring news stories, attending events, scoping out locations, and learning of organizations that deserve our attention, and your participation. Through images and text, the feel of heavy paper against your fingers, and a slight—but pleasant—whiff of ink, captured as you open a fresh new copy of our magazine, you’ll discover the stories that don’t make the news but give respite to a weary readership who often are unable to escape the vitriol of daily headlines. From Stowe, Vermont, where skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing are winding down for the season, and spring “slush parties,” and music concerts are being planned, to the Freeman’s antique auction, Across Continents, the Collection of Ambassador & Mrs. Alexander Weddell, a discerning public will make these and other journeys, with the hope of satisfying their need for excitement and unusual experiences. This month, we highlight a young woman—who some debate—was revolutionary in her taking a pen to paper and writing that all so famous manuscript, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus; initially published without her name in 1818—she was only 21 years of age. Though the jury is out on proper attribution, and we are unable to come to a definitive conclusion of authorship, we leave it up to you to determine if this incredible feat is outside the realm of possibilities. We thoughtfully suggest and highly recommend you watch the movie, Mary Shelley. The story is one of inspiration to all women and men, especially those who face personal challenges and are in search of hope and triumph over adversity. Speaking of films, the SouthCoast Film Forum will be holding a viewing of the International Ocean Film World Tour this month. Featuring six short-films, each focused on our relationships with the earth’s oceans, they range from the serious to outright humorous. With dramatic cinematography and sometimes poignant views of how we treat this natural resource, the final cuts produced by writers and directors are commendable. 10 APRIL 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Also, in our line-up, is a controversy created by selectmen in the coastal community of Onset, and the New Bedford based nonprofit agency, the Buzzards Bay Coalition, specific to a 99-year lease of the town’s historical bathhouse, located on prime— oceanfront—real estate. Initially, renovation to the old building seemed to make sense; but, when a small group of 10 or so citizens filed a lawsuit to stop work at the site, all got quiet, much like the streets of the resort community this time a year. Suspicion quickly grew as to why the agreement was appearing to get derailed, only to suddenly find the suit had been dropped without explanation or media coverage. At first glance, it seemed that the events surrounding the lease were lacking “transparency,” a cloak most elected officials wrap themselves in during elections. What we learned, and have reported, is that the encroachment of public property, allowed by language in the agreement, drew complaints from the plaintiffs. If not for our writer, Natalie Miller, and her months of inquiries and phone calls to interested parties, the effort to peel back the layers of distraction, and gain full disclosure of the terms of the original document, and that of the final lease, would be left to innuendos and rumor for years to come. A lesson gained from our reporting these final details is that the public has a right to know about how their municipality makes decisions. It is also their right to gain access to public information regardless of outcomes. Additionally, any attempt to prevent the media from gleaning answers or engaging in a conversation relative to the public’s business is not a valid strategy for dealing with the press. On a lighter note, it’s time to update your closet and fill it with the newest looks in traditional summer style. Our beautiful models and their designer clothing are an inspiration to open up the windows and let the fresh air in as we welcome a new season and better weather. We hope you enjoy another delightful issue and remember, if you forgot your copy at home or you’re traveling, the magazine is also available digitally, and makes for great reading at your leisure. T HE SECRETS O F AT TRACT I O N DID YOU KNOW THAT INFLUENCING IS A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF BRAND IDENTIFICATION AND AN ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT IN ADVERTISING? HOW ABOUT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN EXPERIENCE-CONTENT AND “NEXT-STEP” WEB SEARCHES? AND, ARE YOU AWARE THAT YOUR WEBSITE IS YOUR “NEW” FRONT DOOR AND A STRONG MAGNET FOR LEAD GENERATION?

IT’S TRUE. New information about modern media has reached the front lines of marketing and advertising. Past public relations protocols are miles behind contemporary social media. Much has changed—in a good way—because businesses are finally learning that no one has time to view uninteresting photos and read ridiculous captions— these efforts won’t instill faith in your company or create new customers. We know you’ve heard the term Influencer, and it’s possible you’re familiar with other catch phrases burgeoning marketeers throw around; but, unless you know how to control, place and measure your influence over a target market, you’re wasting valuable

time and throwing precious resources out of the proverbial window. Magazine promotion is the pinnacle of Influence Marketing, and few—if any other media companies allow you to create the image and branding necessary to survive the new economy. It’s time to get out of the dark ages of advertising and launch into the stratosphere of new-generation marketing; this is an opportunity to add credibility and validity to all of your messaging and promotional efforts. For details and an explanation of research surrounding the effectiveness of influencing and experience event promotion, visit NENewsMedia.com and fill out the contact form. Or if you prefer, call 508-743-5363, we’d enjoy sharing some key-points of how you can take the lead in your industry.

The Art of Living Equates to Living with Art

south dartmouth home offers a complete experience BY STEVE CHAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCKI SCHOTZ

the southcoast countryside is an area known and appreciated for its farming and dairies and has long been a location of choice for equestrians who rely on open fields, ancient stone walls, and the beauty of undisturbed natural resources for the fulfillment of their sport. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | APRIL 2019 15

Highlights that will draw your attention is a first-floor master suite with a walk-in closet, an oversized gourmet kitchen, a bright and open family room, a dining or formal living room, and a powder room.

16 APRIL 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

From the rolling hills, sparkling rivers, and reflective ponds, enhanced by the well-received summer ocean breezes of the Atlantic Ocean, paradise has never looked so intriguing. For those opting to begin a new lifestyle on the coast or to raise a family in an environment that offers the uniqueness of feeling like you’re off-thegrid but close to everything that matters, read on. Horseneck Road and the Barney Joy area of South Dartmouth share the banks of the Slocum River and are highly desirable locations when searching for a residence offering a country atmosphere, without giving up the necessities of modern civilization and social interaction with like-minded neighbors. Essential to this calm retreat is that much of the land remains under resident control, with large parcels protected by conservation so that its wild beauty and historic landscape remain intact as assurance of its desirability and value for generations to come. This month’s review focuses on a melding of the old and the new; it features a home that incorporates an original barn found on the land, to be later designed and incorporated into an expansive, more modern structure, set upon a four plus acre parcel that extends toward the river. The property’s old-growth and natural barriers ensure both privacy and quietness, with the layout and positioning of the home taking in views of a large clearing where wildlife roams, and previously erected stone art-forms that enhance the landscape and make for a relaxing milieu in this artist’s enclave. The uniqueness of the home is its combination of a reconstructed barn, retaining original hardwoods and post and beam structure, currently serving as an artist’s studio, complimented with a vaulted ceiling and loft offering an abundance of privacy from the rest of the living areas. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | APRIL 2019 17

The newer section added to the barn integrates nicely with the older structure in that the continuity of styling and use of similar materials allows a gentle transition and flow. The oversized kitchen, marked by significantly higher ceilings, serves dual purposes; it provides the practical need for food preparation while offering a theater-type atmosphere and seating where captivating views of the great outdoors—through an abundance of glass and French doors leading to an expansive deck—becomes center stage. The room instills a sense of security and retreat— almost a feeling of protection. This multipurpose area of the home serves as a hub of activity and comfort all year long. Another delightful feature noticed during a tour was an adjacent room offering flexibility for a myriad of uses. Library, entertainment center, or office, it is the perfect size and location and can be personalized by a new owner to fit their individual needs. The architect owner/designer left nothing amiss during the construction of the home. Taking full advantage of natural stone products for flooring and counters, recessed illumination, hardwoods, the incorporation of insulated windows and doors, allowing natural light to add warmth to the rooms, he also included efficient radiant heated floors adding further pleasure to daily living. The uniqueness of this home cannot adequately be shared in so few pages; there’s so much more to share, that only a private tour of the property will possibly pair it with new owners. Over the past two centuries the house has expanded into New England, the Southeast, Main Line, Mid-Atlantic, Connecticut, Texas, West Coast, London, and Edinburgh. Their expertise befits services required for massive estate liquidations, expert consultations and advising for private and intuitional collectors, and professional support for museum curators searching for acquisitions or the deaccessioning of collections. On April 10, beginning at 10 a.m., the gavel will strike in acknowledgment of the Across Continents: Property from the Collection of Ambassador & Mrs. Alexander Weddell—The Virginia House Museum sale. The property deaccessioned by the Virginia House Museum is to benefit future preservation, acquisitions, and care of the remaining collections the couple left in the trust of the Virginia Historical Society. The Freeman’s website and artfully designed 260-page catalog offers detailed descriptions of the 480 lots scheduled for auction this month. The Virginia House was gifted to the Virginia Historical Society in 1929 and stipulated that Ambassador Alexander Weddell and his wife Virginia would enjoy lifetime tenancy. The property would serve as their primary residence, with Weddell serving as the organization’s president once retired from the Foreign Service. Unfortunately, the plan was short-lived when the couple died unexpectedly in a train accident on New Year’s Day, 1948. Since that time the Historical Society has owned and managed the property and preserved the incredible collections created by the Weddell’s. The Virginia House is open to the public, and through this auction, proceeds will be reserved in a “restricted fund” allocated for protection and preservation of the historic property and landscape, and the care of the Weddell’s timehonored collections which remain. Throughout the couple’s lives, they traveled worldwide using time and opportunity

to amass objects of art, collectibles, and period furniture from Athens, the Middle East, Africa, India, and Spain. According to the sales history report, the Weddell’s took “... dedicated collecting trips to England, France, and Italy.” And while they never lived in England, the Weddell’s decided to do the next best thing—ship a building they felt strongly about to Virginia. Enthralled with hisStephen Erzia (Russian 1876-1960) tory, nobility, traditions “Le Désenchanté” (the disillusioned) signed, illegibly, inscribed and dated, of royalty, and the spirit “S. Erzia/***/1934/B.A.” Carved Quebracho possessed in an ancient root wood. On a wood stand. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist structure found in Warwickshire, the Ambassador and his wife Virginia had the building—over a thousand years old—taken apart, stone by stone, and shipped to the U.S. so they could reconstruct it as a home. Today, the Virginia House Museum is comprised of many “Tudor-style” structures according to Freeman’s account, and with its intrigue and history, it is easy to understand the importance of this once-in-a-lifetime event. The story, as published by the auction house, details its legacy: “…the primary edifice is reconstructed from the Augustinian Priory of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem in Warwick, England, also known as the Warwick Priory. The Priory was first founded in 1109 and remained an important religious seat until the English monasteries were dissolved in the Reformation. In 1546 it was acquired from the Crown by one of Henry VIII’s favored courtiers, Thomas Hawkins, who undertook a significant renovation of the site, completed in 1566. He eponymously renamed the residence ‘Hawkyns-nest,’ or ‘Hawk’s Nest,’ but it remained known in common parlance as The Priory, as it had been called for the preceding 400 years. The Priory enjoyed continued prominence and royal favor including a visit by Queen Elizabeth I in 1572. In 1709 it was purchased by Henry Wise, superintendent of the royal gardens at Hampton Court and Kensington Palace under Kings and Queens William and Mary, Anne, and George I.” As time passed and the aristocracy began to fail, the Priory ended up in morbid disorder during the 19th-century, and in 1910 a sale of the property was announced. A second offering was published in 1925, promoted as a “Demolition Sale,” of the remains. When it appeared the ruins would be lost forever, the Weddells happened to be traveling to Europe when they came upon the

final notice for the deconstruction of this significant property. Through negotiations, they purchased what was left of the building and made arrangements to ship it stone by stone to Virginia. From the full-color catalog, readers will absorb the significance of the lots scheduled for sale, and realize the quality of the objects and their provenance. H The museum is something to put on a wish-list, due to its rich history, but with the auction taking place so soon, this is a very nice first step. An easy 4-5 hour drive from most of New England or the convenience of biding by phone or online, this is a sale not to be missed. WEATHER OR NOT any in the north were optimistic that towards the end of a bitterly cold and snowy season, nature would allow for the gentle passage of a warming trend as February approached its final days, and March eagerly waited to ride into New England. Unfortunately, the result was a distant second from the sunny days associated with the early stages of spring skiing and deck-parties hosting raucous, but amusing entertainment. The northeast mountain ranges faced winter’s last revenge. Snow, ice, sleet, and frigid temperatures blanketed the region— from its peaks to valleys; the weather covered even the slightest spot of color with—inches to feet—of ice, a snowy-mix, even powder. It was perhaps the season’s worse storm at the highest altitudes. The GMC winter driving event was scheduled during this same period, with participants knowing that facing the 30 APRIL 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

elements would be as tortuous as driving in them; resilient, they all made the journey. The harsh conditions getting to Vermont’s tallest peak, Mount Mansfield, (hours away), was an ideal testing ground for the new 2019 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 4WD Crew Cab and AT4. Upon arrival to the mountain’s basecamp, the hybrid pickups would face another set of obstacles; they would be tested by participants, in a real-world, outdoor laboratory. GO EXTREME-PUSH THE LIMITS If uncertain you’ll face the rigors our Sierra Denali went through, take comfort in knowing we thoroughly tested this luxury workhorse and ran it through challenges that mimicked experiences drivers, and passengers could face during their ownership of this comfortable, and versatile full-size truck. During the later days of winter, we packed up and journeyed north to New Hampshire for an overnight stay. The following morning, we effortlessly loaded

equipment and luggage into the massive crew cab, which is accessible by four independent doors—offering similar convenience as most SUV’s. When it appeared there might not be enough room in the cab for our gear, leaving the possibility of having to use the cargo bed for the excess, we found the longer crewcab body served up an additional three inches of legroom along with rear seats which fold up. Ready to go, the Sierra Denali’s 8-inch diagonal color touchscreen navigation system indicated there were two choices to get to our first destination, the Billings Farm & Museum, of Woodstock VT. Option one: Take major interstates, with semi-cleared road surfaces from first-light plowing and chemical treatment or, Option two: Traverse the mountains— separating us from our objective—passing through long twisting dips and turns, climbing dramatic elevations, navigate through narrow crossings, and ultimately face the unknown around each corner. We decided on an adventure.

DRIVERS OF SUCCESS In preparation for the trip, we became familiar with the pickup truck, which is confusing nomenclature when describing a vehicle exhibiting a luxury interior, accompanied by components and features, found in the most expensive and opulent automobiles. Its exterior is statuesque; from an emboldened chrome grill with the famed GMC shield to a refined and masculine look. The vehicle’s appearance results in eyes moving down to its 22" polished aluminum wheels—then back up to the trim accented by a continuum of the same bright color. In tracing the lines of the 4-door crew cabs’ exterior, its outline provides a sense of movement accompanied by a feeling of sophistication arising from a poised and self-assured stance. A bold and beautiful truck, it offers a best-in-class, 5'8" box, with 63 cubic feet of space, and an all-new and industry first, MultiPro Tailgate. Flexibility, function, and convenience, remove difficulties associated with maximizing tailgate use. For example; there is an enhanced second-tier loading and load stop function, a standing workstation, ease of access to the bed, and a step-entry system that when paired with the assist handle, offers both a step and seat function. Even with all of this, what will ultimately draw attention when at a work-site, on a family vacation, or an evening at the symphony, is the vehicle’s fine appointments, rich interior comforts, and exquisite styling that moves the new Sierra Denali into a class by itself. Other key components making this ride an exceptional one include; a multi-color head-up display on the windshield (with a 3 x 7 inch customizable data window), a crisp and accurate rear-camera mirror offering a wide and less obstructed view in the rear field, and Denali’s premium forge leather-appointed seating, authentic open-pore ash wood trim, and darkfinish aluminum décor. Add heated and perforated front bucket seats, a heated

leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a premium Bose audio sound system that puts a driver into the venue selected from the intuitive audio-library. As for performance; during our trip, the Sierra Denali powered through many feet of snow-effortlessly and met the strain of tracking up a mountain-side while staying within a marked lane—covered in sheets of ice. Most importantly, it remained stable and delivered a sense of security, which ensured passenger confidence while running through the steep and twisting backroads of New England in the winter. With a ProGrade Trailering System and Trailering App, (which includes a suite of new technology), accompanied by the support of GMC’s lane-change, blind-side alerts, and rear-cross traffic notice, just about anyone in the household will quickly become proficient in hauling their boats, horse trailers, or equipment. BACK ON THE ROAD The wind howled, while snow and slush built up all around us as we made our way towards Woodstock, Vermont. We had

spent hours pushing hard against a tide of weather which wouldn’t let up, but it never phased us while surrounded in the comfortable and quiet cabin, listening to our favorite music as if it were a day at the beach. The vehicle’s stance felt secure with a rock-solid wheelbase. Its stability, adaptive ride control, and pinpoint steering accuracy assured our safe arrival. When speaking to others who participated in the trip north, there was resounding agreement that whatever conditions faced, they always felt safe inside their vehicles. Notably, no one bailed on the event because they couldn’t get to the destinations on the agenda. Once we arrived at the Billings Farm & Museum the wind began to rack across the fields, blowing billows of white in every direction. After something hot to drink, we loaded into a similar truck to ours and began a discussion with GMC Vehicle Performance Engineer, Aaron Pfau. We learned about specific towing capabilities of the new GMC Sierra Denali, and the ease of monitoring systems of this new-breed of vehicle. The hooking up of a trailer of

ONE VEHICLE DOES IT ALL The magnificence of Stowe is its premier location and brilliant beauty; it attracts a well-heeled following who have vast interests and are from just about everywhere in the world. It’s a destination resort which provides all winter sports and activities. Our agenda included: ice fishing, an event new to us; snowmobiling, something we love to do; and skiing, which is always on our minds.

It was busy, and always an up-early day, but for everyone to fully appreciate the effort that went into designing the adaptive and versatile Sierra Denali, the group would have to use the trucks in as many settings as possible. Those who watched the crew venture out onto the lake in the early morning to drill holes into the ice, (at minus six degrees), set up shelters, fish, and enjoy the day’s catch, would soon realize that the main support of the trip was our vehicles. Loading and handling of equipment, ease of access, strength, and the security of them blanketed us with peace of mind. As for other activities associated with style and function, we felt proud to be testing such a beautiful and seductive vehicle as we headed deep into the woods for a snow-sled adventure, or when we pulled our skis from the cargo bed for a day of carving turns and shredding freshies. Equally impressive, was driving to dinner and joining the fleet of other exclusive-type vehicles who made their way around the Stowe community. It’s well-known that a person’s personality is projected by the car they choose; and with this notion in mind, we couldn’t help but wonder what impression was left with many of the tourists while watching 12 sparkling new GMC vehicles run the loop at this upscale resort. MYTHS & FALLACIES To set the record straight; not all people who drive pickups are guys.

There’s a new fellowship, and they’re explorers who enjoy taking a different road to success. They may be business owners who need a cargo bed during the day, but elegant accommodations in the evening when going out for dinner; an adventurous couple, who find themselves balancing social events with the demands of being on the road for work, then taking off-road trips when they play. Or it could be a family 32 APRIL 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

snowmobiles was without fanfare and proved to no longer be the responsibility of those having supreme knowledge of all things mechanical. Turning a chore into a simple task, most any adult family member can take the boat to the ocean or the off-road 4x4’s to the forest without worry. Just as important, and of great interest was Pfau’s intimate knowledge of how the truck’s platform of advanced technology works to instill a sense of solace. He simplified, for our benefit, how each major system interacted to conditions in mere microseconds, and how these messages when bundled together would turn into a feedback loop, resulting in an uninterrupted and enjoyable experience for both the driver and passengers. Once the demonstration was complete, and we understood how and why our tumultuous ride to Vermont had been tamed, the second leg of the trip began; we were off to Spruce Peak in Stowe, Vermont.

requiring the flexibility, and space to accommodate pets, the kid’s friends, bales of hay, or new-found treasure won at an auction. RESULTS The GMC 2019 Sierra Denali 1500 4 WD Crew Cab is an excellent advancement in the type of vehicles the American public needs and wants well into the future. Sure, there are

those who want to leave the chore of driving to automation, as for the rest of us, we thrive on the exhilaration of new ideas and technological advancements. Testing this vehicle was in-depth and allowed us a critical view of its offerings and capabilities, perhaps greater than what most drivers would have an opportunity to learn. Because of this, we approached the story with seriousness. The results determine

that GMC engineers, design staff, and marketing professionals have turned the page in automobile history, and made me into a believer that ruggedness and efficiency can dovetail with grace and splendor. FINAL THOUGHTS If you’re not a pickup truck person— drive one. If you are thinking about a new truck—drive this one. H NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | APRIL 2019 33

WH O WROT E

A DEBATE WITHOUT END BY LINDA BERTRUM

riginally, this piece intended to shine a light on the notso-recent release, (2017) of a movie entitled Mary Shelley—it turned out to be more than anticipated. A period-drama, the work first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017, then was released to the U.S. in the early summer of 2018. Upon its opening, the film and soundtrack enlist an immediate reaction from audiences, with costumes and locations providing stunning examples of how life would have appeared at the turn of the 18th-century. Attempting to sustain a meager existence, the main character, Mary Shelley, (played by Mary Elle Fanning), her siblings, father, and stepmother, struggle with many of the same problems families face today. Interpersonal tensions, heartbreak, and the ills of never having enough money to adequately survive; these afflictions result in Mary being sent away for her benefit, and that of her father’s second wife. With a focus on romance and the lowly position of women during the time, we are introduced to a host of characters, including a young poet by the name of Percy Bysshe Shelley. He becomes Mary’s first love, although we quickly learn that he is a philanderer, cad, and deserter of his first family. We also learn how he can cause grief with everything he touches. The events and scenes portrayed in the movie provide a glimpse into a tumultuous lifestyle by youth during the period. However, quite often the casting appears to be flawed due to the ages of

the players. Their youthfulness makes it difficult for contemporary audiences to view them realistically, especially at these life stations; this oddity creates a challenge for us to accept them as accurate examples of historical figures. We are left to view this context through a lens of today’s young adults, making it nearly impossible to overlap current levels of maturity and talent over those living hundreds of years prior. Mary portrayed by Fanning is attributed to authoring the book, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, published in 1818— while only 21 years of age. The actresses’ incredible skills instill a sense of authenticity in character leaving us with a high sense of believability and securing a broad fan base. So, what changed this narrative from a discussion of a monumental feat of authorship by a young woman— generations ahead of her time and possessing the extraordinary talent usually unrecognized due to a male-dominated world until only recently? In doing a bit of research, we learn that

author, John Lauritsen in his 2007 book, The Man Who Wrote Frankenstein, debates who wrote the original novel and attributing the work to Mary’s husband, Percy. With this, many have come out in support of Lauritsen’s thesis, while others reject his claims. Much of the author’s evidence revolves around homoeroticism; he thinks that the husband—for unknown reasons—did not want the contribution to be assigned to himself and requested the notoriety to his wife. This unproven criticism has created a type of “hoax” which unfortunately has tarnished what could be a superb chronicle of brilliance by a woman cast to obscurity based on gender. Referring to Mary as a “badly educated teenager,” Lauritsen lists support from critic Camille Paglia. In print, Paglia takes full liberty to discredit the young writer and distracts any praise many believe she deserves. Naturally, Mary has her supporters, Charles E. Robinson argues—with testimony—that Lord Byron (who created the challenge to write a horrific tale), William Godwin (Mary’s father), and Claire Clairmont (Mary’s stepsister) all back the notion that the young woman author compiled the manuscript. As with most disputes, we are left with specific questions and curiosities. Perhaps somewhere in the middle lies the truth, albeit, we shall never know who put their pen to paper to create an epic tale, one that has transcended beyond the wildest of imagination. Regrettably, we will not discover the truth, but we can relish in a story about a heroine that gives inspiration to all generations who follow her fantastic life. The Public’s Voice is Heard Over

Onset Bathhouse Restoration BY NATALIE MILLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVEN CHAN/LUCKI SCHOTZ

A project to transform a centuries-old bathhouse into a fully-functioning community and water exploration center is under full sail this month after years of planning and months of negotiations with a group of citizens fighting against what they said was back-door politics and the illegal process by the town.

F

or the past four years, the Buzzards Bay Coalition has been working with the town of Wareham, Mass., to better utilize the 100 acres of land in Onset and transform its bathhouse into a 21st-century facility that will provide educational and community services and bring on-the-water programs to the public. After a successful town meeting vote in April 2016, the town subsequently approved a 99-year lease of the bathhouse to the Coalition, a New Bedford-based nonprofit. The lease required a Special Act of the Legislature and Governor Charlie Baker’s approval due to the unique circumstance surrounding the ownership of the structure. In 1916, a Supreme Judicial Court (SCJ)decision ruled that the Onset property and lands were established for the “enjoyment of the public” and therefore must remain open and accessible to the public and never be leased or sold. As such, the town of Wareham is a trustee of the land, explains Wareham Town Selectman Chairman Alan Slavin.

“We had been hoping to do something with the bathhouse; it had been sitting [mostly unused] for quite a while,” he says. When the coalition came to the town with its plans for the building, “we thought it was a great idea for the town. It should be extremely beneficial to Onset and the town of Wareham for Onset to have growth and offer programs to children who would otherwise not have access [to the land]. There is no downside to this whatsoever.” Over the years, the residents of Onset, a self-sufficient resort waterfront community built in the 1800’s and located within the town of Wareham and along the shores of Buzzards Bay, have used this SJC decree—which includes 17 parcels of Onset land—to fight many battles with the town like the installation of parking kiosks, tree removal, and the installation of a boat ramp in the 1980s. With most of the original storefronts and cottages still intact, Onset has been able to retain its historic Victorian charm to the pride of its 1,500 residents. Once word of the impending construction of the

bathhouse spread, a group of 10 residents led by Lisa Morales filed a lawsuit in Plymouth Superior Court against the town and Coalition. The suit alleged that the town illegally leased land in Onset to the Buzzards Bay Coalition and that the 99-year lease included land beyond the scope of the approved project. While not opposed to the construction of the center at the bathhouse, residents argued that the concern was over public lands and the “illegal process” the town engaged in to approve the project. After negotiations and an amendment to the lease signed by Town Administrator Derek Sullivan, on November 29, 2018, the residents voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit, Lisa Morales et al. v. Town of Wareham et al., according to the Plymouth County Superior Court, and effectively gave the Coalition the green light. FIGHTING THE PROCESS; PROTECTING THE LAND

Onset resident Lisa Morales says she is happy with the outcome of the lawsuit,

stating that she was never against the renovation of the bathhouse. “We were against the process,” she says. “We found it to be illegal.” She says the Town Meeting vote in 2016, which occurred just two months before she moved to Onset, was explicitly to lease out the bathhouse, only, but the lease agreement drafted included other land surrounding the structure, including the bluffs, beach, and part of Bayview Park. “That was not what was approved by voters,” she says. The land is meant to be free and open to the public as decreed, she explains. The lease is a unique one; the original developer of the Onset village, the Onset Bay Grove Association—founded in 1877—was established to prevent the town from falling victim to overdevelopment and commercialization; it is still on the deed for the beaches and parks. The foundation dissolved as a company in the mid-1970s but was revived through the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s Office in 2017 so the lease could be signed by David

It was all smoke and mirrors Warr, the grandson of the last president of the association. It has since been dissolved again. “It was all smoke and mirrors,” says Morales, suggesting that it was the signature of Gov. Baker that authorized the lease. Morales, a paying member of the Buzzards Bay Coalition, explains that after failed attempts to meet with its president, she and her fellow residents filed the 10-taxpayer suit. “We decided it was our only course of action,” she says. “The decree was violated, and the process was violated. [What Gov. Baker signed] wasn’t what the people voted on.” Once filed, the lawsuit immediately went into discovery, which Morales says was an attempt to drown the residents in depositions, exhausting time and money.

After weeks of negotiation, an agreement with an amendment eliminating the beach, bluff, and section of Bayview Park from the original document was approved. It also stated that the tenant could not “erect any additional structures in any areas of Bayview Park and Onset Beach” that are outlined. The lawsuit was then withdrawn. “We withdrew because we had a resolution that met our needs…to protect the land,” says Morales. “We felt we did what we could do to let the project go forward and protect the land.” THE ONSET BAY CENTER

Mark Rasmussen, president of the Buzzards Bay Coalition, said the $5.5 million project at the Onset bathhouse is now moving forward as planned. SOCO FILMS PRESENT THE

International Ocean Film Tour-Volume 6

T

he SouthCoast Film Forum has announced the viewing of the International Ocean Film Tour (IOFT). A special program of six short films, related to the seas of the globe, the event highlights the efforts of independent filmmakers through inspiring clips which will excite, explain, and explore our oceans and their impact. According to the organization’s press release, the program is currently touring in Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, and the UK. The IOFT includes a unique selection of films covering topics including ocean adventure and exploration, the marine environment, marine creatures, ocean-related sports, coastal cultures, and ocean lovers. Generating interest in the program is the headliner, a shortened version of the fulllength documentary, Chasing the Thunder.

A thrilling high seas adventure, the feature records how two marine conservation captains, of the Sea Shepard, go on a hundred-day chase of an illegal poacher and pirate fishing vessel, the Thunder. Other shorts include: 700 Sharks-Ocean Life, which explores the notion that these predators usually hunt singularly, only to discover they appear to resemble packanimals and their behavior can veer out of normal boundaries, (:20 minutes). A portrait of Julie Gautier tells a tale of a person growing up in and around the ocean, and an interest to meld free-diving and dance, (:20 minutes). Comedy, Surfer Dan, brings humor to the water with an entertaining look at riding the winter waves on Lake Superior, (:07 minutes)— see SOCO Magazine’s recent article on the sport, (February 2019), Surfs Up-Winter Waves-an Alternative to the Slopes. A surfing biopic about Andy Irons, entitled,

Kissed by God, explains how he became a three-time world champion athlete, while behind the scenes he battled bipolar disease and opioid addiction. Lastly, Blown Away, (:07 minutes), delves into a tale of two sound engineers who take a nine-meter sailing vessel and drive it from Sydney to Berlin; making landfall in dozens of ports in 31 countries. This collection of stories examines extraordinary tales and will teach even the most learned about the role the oceans play in our lives collectively as well as individually. Humor, seriousness, and a fight for justice, the forum is not to be missed. H The screening will be held on April 13, at the Cook Memorial Theater at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Johnny Cake Hill at the Seaport. Viewing is from 4:30-6:30 p.m. with ticket prices of $12.50. M A T T E R Are we able to maximize brain function?

I

t’s true; the mind is a terrible thing to waste. But the pervasive notion that we use only 10 percent of our brains is a myth, likely originating over a century ago with Harvard psychologists William James and Boris Sidis and their theory of mental energy conservation. It was their student Dale Carnegie, author of the 1936 book How to Win Friends and Influence People, who later put words in their mouths by ascribing “10 percent” as something they used to say.1 Studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other methods have shown that the majority of our brains are nearly always active, even when we’re asleep.2 What’s more, a recent large study in The Journal of Neuroscience showed the popular brain game Lumosity had no meaningful effect on memory and cognition (learning, reasoning, etc.) versus a control group that

played other stimulating games not designed to improve thinking, as well as a group that played no games. It turned out that the cognitive skills learned from the video games did not “transfer” to other cognitive skills. Using neural imaging, they observed no difference in brain activity between groups before or after the games. (Lumosity was assessed $2 million for false advertising in 2016.)3 So, can we boost brain power or are we consigned to the genetic lottery? USE IT OR LOSE IT

According to Michael Merzenich, professor emeritus of neuroscience at UC San Francisco, the brain is malleable and able to be changed at any age.4 This is encouraging news for those who have abandoned New Year’s Resolutions. Breaking old habits and forming new ones takes time and effort, so it’s important to keep trying.

The author of Soft-Wired: How the New Science of Brain Plasticity Can Change Your Life, Merzenich says we must keep working the brain to keep it functioning correctly; that is, we must keep the “machinery” (synapses) going that allows our brain to grow. He explains it’s a positive feedback loop whereby each new skill makes way for another, as well as a “use it or lose it” proposition for existing skills and abilities (not unlike muscle tone). Beyond changing ingrained habits, many scientists say improving intellect is possible and has been naturally increasing in industrialized societies.5 Some, like the University of Virginia’s Jack Naglieri, say that when we improve IQ, we’re exploiting the brain’s working parts to be able to function better. In other words, we don’t become smarter per se, but learn to use better what we have—a reference to fluid versus crystallized intelligence, or

abstract thinking, problem-solving, and identifying patterns/relations versus head knowledge. (Fluid intelligence typically decreases with time whereas the latter increases.) Others like Cornell University’s Stephen Ceci point to studies showing teen IQ scores increasing by double digits, and adult brain scans changing after learning new life skills requiring fluid intelligence (example,

cell function and growth. (Scientists theorize that brain cell volume is more important to intelligence than brain size.) Just 30 minutes can affect brain plasticity. Notably, a study of over one million young Swedish soldiers linked aerobic exercise and fitness with higher IQ and later educational achievement. (Muscular strength was not correlated.)9 Play Dual N-Back or Chess. Designed to increase working memory, Dual N-Back

BRAIN FOOD

Despite averaging just several pounds, the brain requires the most energy of any organ. It stands to follow that nutritional support should also be a consideration, as with working muscles. Eating a balanced, unprocessed diet is essential, with foods high in vitamin E, beta carotene and omega-3 essential fats. Daily choices such as cold water fish (salmon,

Lumosity aside, the Association for Psychological Science said in 2012 that developments in computerized cognitive training for improved attention, working memory and executive function (the ability to control one’s behavior) show “enormous promise in improving performance, especially in fluid intelligence.” Overall, their analysis of research attempts to improve intelligence showed about half were successful.6 APS posits that “life is an intelligence test” and the real challenge lies in measuring it outside the lab. EVIDENCE-BASED TIPS

Many note that adult IQ tends to stay consistent over time, but improvements in underlying intelligence can be lasting. As research mounts, some steps have merit for improving overall mental capacity and IQ (adapted from bebrainfit.com): Get SMART. While performed on children, research in the journal Learning and Individual Differences, as well as other studies, suggest that “Strengthening Mental Abilities with Relational Training” can have a real effect on intellect.7, 8 Finding relationships between things (example, if one object is worth less than another, the second must be worth more) is considered fundamental to intelligence—called Relational Frame Theory. Since many of us cannot discern more complex relations, online SMART training like raiseyouriq.com (unlike Lumosity) may be able to help. Get moving. Physical exercise enhances blood flow to the brain, nourishing it with oxygen, glucose and other nutrients for better

(example, Brainler.com) was the first brain activity proven to raise IQ. Equally, chess increases fluid intellectual functions such as concentration, problem-solving and working memory, and can raise IQ. Keep learning. Whether through formal schooling or new life experiences, research has shown that exposure to further information and problems to be solved increases IQ. (Learning a new language, musical instrument, and taking art lessons are particularly useful.) Similarly, having a mentally challenging job can improve cognitive ability. Meditate. Meditation has been shown to improve fluid intelligence dramatically, in addition to its health-promoting benefits. One study of a type of meditation called brainwave training showed a 23 percent increase in IQ, which remained after one year at follow-up.10 When the brain enters a relaxed, slower state called theta or delta, it increases in plasticity and reorganizes itself. Consider neuro-feedback. With personal/home devices now available, neuro-feedback allows tracking of brainwaves to help the user move into a relaxed brain state (resembling meditation). Play ping-pong. Though seemingly trivial, Merzenich likes ping-pong for an agile mind, making the brain function “with high accuracy at speed.”4 Live healthily. Behaviors that can lower IQ are smoking, excessive drinking, inadequate sleep, using fluoride toothpaste, multitasking, and loneliness. The study of young Swedish soldiers also found that those with higher IQ were more likely to choose a healthier lifestyle and had lower alcohol intake.

sardines) and walnuts for omega-3s; avocado; eggs; olive oil; coconut oil (rich in mediumchain fats); and antioxidant-rich berries, dark chocolate, and turmeric are good brain foods. Since 25 percent of the body’s cholesterol is found in brain cells, it is advisable not to eliminate healthful foods such as egg yolk from one’s diet. Further, there is evidence that supplements such as ginkgo biloba can allow for better memory and cognition, likely from enhanced brain circulation (similar to exercise). For those who dislike fish, fish oil capsules are another way of obtaining the preferable long-chain form of omega-3 fats (versus plant-based). In all, these factors probably won’t enable us to master quantum physics or write an awardwinning novel, but they may help us become better thinkers and decision makers. The Mirror Doesn’t Lie WHEN BUILDING A BET TER R EL ATIONSHIP BY ANDREW AAR ON, LICSW

E

very relationship has problems, with partners viewing their issues differently. Both partners cause a majority of couples’ problems; however, a universal tendency is that most partners conclude that relationship problems are mostly the other’s fault. With a subjective perspective, each partner tends to minimize or even negate his or her contribution to problems while magnifying the other’s share of the blame. As time passes, the disagreement as to who caused the relationship’s difficulties undermines the couple’s connection. The power of denial is absolute, a blindness which a person doesn’t know— what he or she doesn’t know. Partners are generally unaware of their limitations when it comes to love. Defensiveness, selfishness, avoidance, and insensitivity are some of the obstacles that make determining one’s contribution to relationship problems nearly impossible to identify. 56 APRIL 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Within love relationships, each partner functions as a mirror, albeit an imperfect one, reflecting the other’s qualities and abilities to love. The mirror always demonstrates some degree of truth. Reflection occurs when a partner’s actions are mostly a reaction to behaviors of the other person. For example, consider a partner who gives back a loving gesture after receiving one or another partner who acts hurtfully as payback for having been hurt previously. The cycle of action and reaction complicate the determination of who is the cause and who is the affected one. When problems develop within a relationship, partners often reject the feedback from the mirroring the other person offers. As difficulties increase in number and grow in significance, relationships take on a negative tenor. Consequently, the tendency to assign blame increasingly influences each partner’s feelings and behavior. Once in a state of extreme

disconnection, each partner is rendered powerless to break through a wall made of painful unresolved problems; neither partners knows where to begin. Only feeling his or her pain, each partner is isolated like an island. Having far less knowledge of the other’s hurt, the view of the relationship and the partner grows distorted. Each partner is now looking through a filter of being the one who is wronged. When both partners feel wronged, little connection is likely. If partners choose a repair conversation to rebuild their connection, but only offers a minor assignment of their blame, the result will undoubtedly feel unfair and derail the effort. Should one person’s upset be expressed intensely, causing additional hurt, the disagreement to determine who is the most at fault will be widened. It is a self-evident truth that relationship problems need to be resolved for a couple to improve their connection. Determining what each partner contributes to the issues is necessary, but a complicated step in the journey to improvement. Sorting out who is to be blamed can be as confusing as walking through a hall of mirrors at a carnival due to an individual’s inherent inability to set boundaries. Without an objective third party, getting clear on one’s contribution to problems can be futile. Hence, people in troubled relationships often seek a friend’s or a therapist’s input. Each partner does possess some power to get clear about his or her role in a tough relationship. Making positive changes in oneself is an effective way to softly influence the other partner and can also be personally beneficial. By being consistently loving, a partner becomes a mirror that reflects only positives. The other partner’s negative contributions become exposed when he or she is the only cause. Problems are easier to solve when there is only one source. A relationship is refreshingly simple when each partner is clear and distinct with well-defined boundaries. Loving is easy when both partners look in the mirror offered by the other, and only love is reflected. H Andrew Aaron, LICSW is a sex and relationship therapist who practices in the New Bedford Seaport.

Designing Your Treasure Map– Because No One Else Will Do It For You BY ROBERT WRIGHT

couple of notions came to mind before beginning this month’s column; I asked myself if readers will stay with me through the series, equally importantly, I wonder if those who do continue to read, will follow the advice. With significant contemplation I concluded that it takes a unique individual, one with laser focus, to consciously deny themselves materialistic enticements pitched to a population that has grown up believing they are über talented and deserving of success without suffering the pain of working for just rewards. I resolved the conflict and apprehensiveness by deciding that since this advice is free—and worth that same value; I’m willing to offer these thoughts and suggestions, with the hope of catching the attention of a single person who believes they can achieve their financial goals. GET STARTED

If you don’t plan your future, then who will do it for you? No one. Even if your plans include the trickling down of resources from the prior generation, there’s no guarantee you’ll end up with enough money to declare full independence. Too often strings are attached to inheritances or crafty lawyers tie up money through trusts, which avoids probate and your access. The reason for this is that 58 APRIL 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

when you don’t have money, and you didn’t work for a windfall coming your way, the appreciation for newly gained wealth is often undervalued and oddly enough, unappreciated. Additionally, too often family money gets dissolved by a significant other, who had a plan—unlike you. Beneficiaries of wealth are often kept on a tight leash for their benefit; however, this leaves only two viable options: (1) Live with a monthly allowance and watch your peers live it up—due to their hard work and investing savvy, or (2) Get motivated and create your legacy. DAY ONE

First order of business; start now, time passes quickly, and as someone, (unknown source) has said, “Days pass like years, years pass like days.” Nothing rings with greater truth, and whether you’re looking at compounding interest or value over time, every moment counts towards an appreciation of your assets. BUY A HOME

Proper planning is to know where you will be for at least five to ten years from now. Rather than renting an apartment and paying someone else to profit on their investment, find a property you can afford and close to what your monthly rent would be. At least two benefits come from following this strategy; you will be taken seriously by financial institutions going forward—they own it you pay for it, and over time, the value of your home will likely increase if you do your due diligence and not overpay for this first major investment. Don’t search for luxury or by zip code; instead, look for the worst house in a great neighborhood. Drive around and search for a multi-family, talk to people who may be interested in offering an opportunity, like rent-to-own so that the down payment hurdle is avoided. And, if all else fails, find a fixer-upper that you can repair yourself and spread the remodeling expense over time. Another option, but one that takes effort and research, is to find a high-rise apartment building soon to turn 30-years old. Property owners often turn their apartments into condos, allowing those living in them to purchase their units at significant discounts. Most people are unaware of this method when purchasing a home, but I stumbled upon the opportunity years ago and bought both a unit and parking space. In a short ten-year span, I sold the package, doubled my money, which afforded me a vacation home, paid for with cash, and allowed me to put a hefty down payment on a primary residence—all tax-free. From here, the two homes have also gone up in value and has offered many opportunities for future investments due to earned equity in the properties. To think this success began with a need to find a place to sleep. CARS

Until you can afford to buy a luxury vehicle for cash, and time your purchase to coincide with a recession, (which creates unfathomable discounts on large inventories on top-line cars), you need to temper the need to drive your first choice. Continued on page 66
