Lower School Physical Education THE ELLIPSE Robert “Doc” Browning — Athletic Trainer & Lower School Physical Education Instructor Doc will be on the Ellipse (between the Fojtasek Family Lower School and the Winn Science Center) to discuss the Physical Education Program. At St. Mark’s, boys attend Physical Education every day, and emphasis is placed on sportsmanship and teamwork.

WINN SCIENCE CENTER ROOM 105 Matthew Dillon — Lower School Science Specialist The Lower School Science curriculum provides the boys with hands-on, minds-in experiences, introducing and teaching all aspects of science and how it relates to technology, reading, writing, engineering, the arts and mathematics. By using the scientific method, design thinking and the engineering/design process, the program fosters curiosity, inventiveness, perseverance, and enthusiasm. Lower School Science Specialist Matthew Dillon will be available all morning to demonstrate teaching methods and answer questions.

The Lower School Chapel and Choir Program

THE ST. MARK’S CHAPEL Glenn Stroh — Choirmaster and Organist Garrett Kheshtinejad — Lower School Music Instructor The Reverend Dr. Stephen Arbogast — Chaplain The St. Mark’s Chapel sits in the center of campus and is foundational to the St. Mark’s experience. The chaplaincy program provides students and their parents, alumni and employees with thoughtful and sensitive pastoral care and support. The Chapel is also home to the St. Mark’s Choir, one of the world’s pre-eminent boys’ choirs. The Chaplain, Lower School Music Instructor, and the Choirmaster and Organist will be available all morning to answer questions.

Football Coach J.R.R. Tolkien says, “Not all those who wander are lost.” And that is especially true when all roads lead to Rome. Journey back in time to a period when the world’s major civilizations began to expand and come into contact with one another. Not only did Rome shape and influence the world around it, but its dynamics of culture and societal institutions became part of a more modern, global world. See students in action as they explore the complex inner workings of what makes a successful government through historical connections to modern day concepts. Students will investigate and think critically about the Roman Republic’s tripartite government, and then track its influence on the formation of the United States Government.

The St. Mark’s Writing Conference

David Brown — Victor F. White Master Teaching Chair in English Victor F. White Master Teacher in English, Mr. David Brown, will explain and demonstrate the St. Mark’s Writing Conference. All English students at St. Mark’s will have the opportunity to meet at least quarterly with their teacher in one-on-one writing conferences on major papers. During these 20 to 30-minute sessions in the teacher’s office, students receive and discuss feedback on the content, structure and mechanics of their writing. Mr. Brown, a longtime proponent and practitioner of the model, will conduct an actual conference with an Upper School student.

As each boy progresses along his own Path to Manhood, the Middle School seeks to instill essential concepts, habits and skills to foster the development of each boy’s character and capacity for leadership. His presentation, A Brief History of St. Mark’s, will focus on landmark moments in the history of the school and its predecessor schools, including the Terrill School, which was founded in 1906. Special attention will be paid to legendary leaders and important developments in curriculum, program and physical plant.

The St. Mark’s Student Handbook states, “In addition to the formal structures such as the Student Council, the Discipline Council, the Chapel Committee, four campus publications, Lion and Sword Society and the Community Service Committee, students are invited to consult with or to serve on ad hoc faculty, administration or trustee committees.” In this session, five of our student leaders will discuss leadership and service in a panel discussion format moderated by the President of the Class of 2000.
