FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Marksmen Athletes, Parents, Coaches, and Friends, As we near the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year, I want to express my profound gratitude to each and every one of you. The unprecedented nature of this school year has certainly tested all of us in new and unexpected ways, and yet you have remained steadfast in your commitment to finding ways to make the most of every opportunity. From the very beginning, our athletes, coaches, and families have focused on making this a positive and meaningful year for St. Mark’s athletics. I am grateful to all of our boys for demonstrating continued commitment and dedication, often in the face of significant challenges. The values and lessons that Marksmen learn and develop in athletics are an integral part of their overall education at St. Mark’s. These experiences are incredibly important as they make their way on the path to manhood. For 115 years, our athletic programs have provided excellent opportunities for boys to stretch themselves physically and emotionally, developing vitally important life skills, including perseverance, discipline, and teamwork. This year, our teams not only delivered strong performances, but also exhibited exemplary sportsmanship on and off the field. Supported by dedicated coaches and enthusiastic parents, Marksmen developed an even greater appreciation for the value of competing in all the right ways. Learning to win and lose with dignity is an essential life lesson that will endure long after the final whistle blows. It is our sincere hope that every one of our athletes not only enjoys his time competing as a Lion, but more importantly, that he carries with him valuable and meaningful life lessons. We are particularly grateful to all of you who supported our athletic programs throughout the course of the past year. As always, it has been a genuine pleasure and privilege for Nancy and me to cheer on the Lions. While it has been a challenging period, our boys have demonstrated exceptional leadership every step of the way. Thank you for supporting St. Mark’s athletics. Sincerely,

David W. Dini Eugene McDermott Headmaster 4

FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Dear guests, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2020-2021 Athletic Awards Ceremony where we commemorate the many fond memories that have made this year so special. Let us take time to reflect on these memories and recognize the many incredible achievements of our student-athletes during a year that has once again challenged our School in so many different ways. As always, we celebrate the many valuable lessons learned through athletic competition that have, and will continue to shape the lives of our Marksmen student-athletes. Lessons such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance are the foundation of our athletics program and help to serve the mission of our School. This is also a time to celebrate all of the relationships that have been formed in our athletic community through our cherished time together. These strong bonds were clearly on display throughout this past year as we have leaned on each other for support while navigating a global pandemic together. Athletics has served a vital role in our School’s recovery over these past couple of years, and it is the resolute spirit of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, parents, and community that continues to push our athletics program forward in a positive direction. It is also important that we recognize all of the wins, losses, and exciting moments that have helped to galvanize our community during these challenging times. Last, but certainly not least, we reflect upon the marked growth of our student-athletes, especially the Seniors, as they move on to new and exciting challenges. We are so grateful for their tremendous leadership and take pride in honoring their many outstanding accomplishments. St. Mark’s strong culture is built upon the shoulders of past and present students, and the Class of 2021 has certainly left their mark on both our School and its athletics program. Please join me as we revel in the many highlights of a year that has once again embodied the Marksmen spirit and given us so much to celebrate. Sincerely,

Sean Lissemore Director of Athletics

The 2020 Cross Country almost never happened. Because of the restrictions of Covid-19, there was a constantly changing landscape regarding interscholastic competitions and maintaining safety above all else. Finally, we were given the green light to develop a schedule and outline protocol for each meet. We were able to do that and put together a 5-meet schedule that allowed us to compete and still adhere to the restrictions. We competed on the same course 4 times at the Athletic Performance Ranch, traversing a very challenging course over varying 12

terrain. The results produced a successful, although greatly diminished and limited, season. With 28 boys signed up, many of those returners, plus a large group of freshmen, we presented a formidable force within the SPC North Zone. Led by ALL-SPC runners Sahil Dodda and Julian Ivarra, the team continued to build an improve all season. Junior Fisayo Omonije, freshman’s Raja, Mehendale, Asa McCaleb and Parker Steinbrueck were the main force by our two top guys. We won every one of the meets by a large margin. st. mark’s school of texas

The highlight of the season was the emergence of Sahil Dodda as a force, not only in the North Zone and SPC, but statewide and nationally. Sahill was able to compete in a National Cross Country Meet 2 weeks after our North Zone Runoff in the prestigious RunningLane CC Championships in Alabama. INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Running against some of the best runners in the nation, Sahil finished 40th over-all with a 5K time of 15:04.17. His time smashed the existing School Record of 15:38.0, originally set in 1988 by Tyler Cooper and tied in 2019 by Pablo Arroyo, by over 30 seconds! What a great ending to the season!

The 2020 season was a season like none other in St. Mark’s history. The Lions took to the practice field for the first time on Monday September 14. Step by step a special group of players got to work on the field, in the weight room, and in the film room, going through 7 weeks of training without a scrimmage or game until October 30. Although the 2020 season consisted only of 2 games, they were both memorable.

led to Eagle scores and the Lions fell 21-7 in the opener.

The Lions opened up at home against ESD. Giving up a score on their first drive, the Lions defense adjusted, tightened, and held the Eagles down for the rest of the game. An Alex Nadalini touchdown pass to Connor Gaffney tied the score at 7, but unfortunately a couple of turnovers 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

The following week the Lions traveled to Greenhill. A defensive battle from the outset, St. Mark’s opened up the scoring on the last play of the half with a Keats Leffel 1 yard run. In the third quarter Alex Nadalini connected with Kit Colson on a 33 yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0. That would be all the scoring the Lions would need, as an outstanding team defensive effort kept the Hornets off the scoreboard securing the 14-0 victory. Unfortunately, 2 games was the extent of the 2020 season, but the memories, camaraderie, and lessons learned will last a lifetime. Special thanks to the players and coaches who made this season 15

memorable. Football is a hard sport, and not for everyone. The sacrifice, effort, and toughness that they made to represent St. Mark’s, particularly with the unique challenges imposed by the covid era, will not be forgotten. The senior class of 2020 deserves particular recognition. Seniors Charles Wilson and Rex Corey were tenacious on the defensive line, while Abe Echt and Luis Garcia-Ojeda were all over the field as linebackers. Cornerback Luke Nayfa led the team in interceptions accompanied in the back end by safety Robert Pou. Connor Gaffney

and Kit Colson paced the receiving corps in touchdowns while center Drew Woodward anchored the offensive line. The versatile and dedicated Trevor Gicheru contributed all over the field, and newcomers John Hubbard and Colin Bajec added much needed depth, joined late out of quarantine by Mike Mendoza. This group of young men represented St. Mark’s exceptionally well and should be praised for their accomplishments. Also special thanks to the athletic training staff and the athletic administration team for their continued support of the team.

After a year of question marks and chaos, the fact that we were able to have a season at all was a miracle in itself. We began the season by creating an outdoor practice area on the field by the parking lot. For about a month we went through drills and learned the various styles and techniques of playing outdoor volleyball. Once it was deemed safe, we were allowed to head back into the gym and get back to 6 on 6 volleyball. We were only able to have 6 matches in our season but we made the most of them. Finishing with a 5-1 record and capping the season with a crushing victory against Trinity Valley that proved 18

that we were the team to beat had we been given the chance to have a tournament. It was a bittersweet end to the careers of some of the best players that have laced up for the Lions volleyball team. Seniors captains Tristan Doan, Cooper Ribman, and Daniel Sanchez along with key contributing seniors Jack Davis, Sarbik Saha, Vatsal Vemuri, and Luke Voorheis are going to be missed next year when we get up and running again. Their leadership and skill level was a big reason this program has been so successful over the past 3 years.

With a dominant SPC championship performance to conclude the 2019-20 season, the St. Mark’s basketball team entered their 2020-21 journey with the loftiest of expectations. MaxPreps, the United States’ leading voice for high school sports, ranked the Lions #1 in Texas and #23 among the roughly 20,000 varsity basketball programs nation-wide. Several of the longest-standing and highest-regarded events in the country invited this talented squad to participate, and the buzz around campus was electrifying. Unfortunately, a full season was not meant to be. Covid sidelined the team for eight of its thirteen

weeks, resulting in the cancelation of more than three-fourths of the non-conference schedule, half of the SPC games, and the vast majority of practices. But since the truest of champions always demonstrate their greatness most prominently in times of difficulty and disappointment, this special group of Lions resolved to do exactly that!

22

Harrison Ingram Tate Laczkowski Corvin Oprea Colin Smith

The season started with a string of non-conference games against other elite programs in the area. The Lions hosted Spring Creek Academy, a talented squad from Plano that took an early doubledigit lead. St. Mark’s clawed back st. mark’s school of texas

to forge a slim advantage heading into the half and then extended that lead to as much as 11 in the fourth quarter. A late run by Spring Creek gave them a chance to pull out the dramatic win, but the Marksmen held on for a 63-62 victory. Harrison Ingram led all scorers with 29 points, and junior Colin Smith also scored 18. Senior Luke Annett came off the bench to knock down a couple of clutch threes, handing Spring Creek their first of only two losses all season long (the club would go on to finish 29-2), proving the win even more impressive for the Lions. Next up, SM hit the road for the first time and played against a terrific Bishop Lynch team that would ultimately place second in the Texas Association of Private/ Parochial Schools’ 6A state tournament. Early on, St. Mark’s struggled to gain its rhythm offensively but held a solid lead throughout the first half, thanks to a stellar team defensive effort. Freshman Nathan Davis locked up the Friars’ play-making point guard, and senior Jake Laufenberg provided an energetic spark that enabled the Lions to lead by over 20 in the fourth quarter. Juniors Corvin Oprea and Caleb Vanzant stretched Bishop Lynch’s 2-3 zone with some perimeter sharpshooting, and Harrison Ingram (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Colin Smith (18 points, 13 rebounds) attacked the rim relentlessly to allow the Lions to cruise to a 59-47 win. 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

The team finished the 2020 calendar year with a pair of road games. First, the Lions traveled to Waxahachie High School for a showdown between two of the state’s top teams (Waxahachie would climb to as high as seventh in the national rankings!). The Marksmen dug themselves an early hole but managed to turn an eight-point deficit into a threepoint halftime lead, thanks in large part to freshman Nathan Davis scoring five points and holding Waxahachie‘s best player (an Oklahoma signee) scoreless. Tate Laczkowski’s 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and fellow junior Corvin Oprea’s team-high 19 points paced the Lions in a seesaw battle that came down to the wire. Unfortunately, SM couldn’t capitalize on a couple of late opportunities and wound up losing the game by 3. Coincidentally, the Lions’ final game before the break would take place at Rockwall High School against a Yellow Jacket team that, two months later, would lose in the 6A University Interscholastic League regional tournament to Waxahachie. Tate Laczkowski once again reached double figures, and senior Harrison Ingram initiated time and time again (21 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists) against a scrappy and determined Rockwall opponent that had a chance to win at the buzzer but came up short resulting in a 59-57 SM victory. Following a lengthy layoff, the Marksmen returned to the court and began SPC North Zone 23

counter play with a pair of wins against Fort Worth foes, starting with Country Day. Despite looking a bit rusty and shooting only 23% from behind the 3pt line, four juniors sparked the team’s scoring effort by reaching double figures – Corvin Oprea (22), Colin Smith (20), Caleb Vanzant (11), and Tate Laczkowski (10, as well as a teamhigh 11 rebounds and 4 assists). Full-court pressure from freshman Nathan Davis (who contributed a season-high 9 points) and senior Connor Gaffney broke the game open in the second half, and senior Luke Annett and junior Miller Trubey put the finishing touches on a convincing 82-32 victory. Later in the week, the Lions hosted Trinity Valley. Colin Smith was active early and then got hot from the three-point line. He finished the game with a sensational (and season-high) 36 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Tate Laczkowski also turned in a double-double performance with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Luke Annett led the team with 4 assists. Caleb Vanzant, making his second consecutive start, posted 7 rebounds and 3 assists, and Corvin Oprea notched his second 22-point scoring effort in as many games. The strong team effort earned the Marksmen their second lopsided win of the week, 83-51. With other SPC programs cutting their seasons short due to Covid, St. Mark’s finished out conference play against three local rivals.

24

Less-than-ideal weather and ongoing pandemic concerns drastically altered the late-season schedule. The SPC tournament had already been canceled, and now two of the team’s five remaining North Zone opponents were unable to compete. Nonetheless, the Marksmen strove to make the most of the situation, a mindset that undoubtedly defined the 2020-21 season. Parents on-hand for a senior night game against Cistercian generated an energetic atmosphere, and the Lions fed off that excitement in every way! Three-year manager extraordinaire, Anish Karthik, along with on-the-court veteran standouts Connor Gaffney, Luke Nayfa, Sarbik Saha, Luke Annett, Jake Laufenberg, and Harrison Ingram were honored at halftime for their rich contributions to the program over the years. Gaffney and Annett got the scoreboard moving with a pair of threes each, while Laufenberg logged a teamhigh 9 rebounds. Ingram finished the game with a near tripledouble (12 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists), and the Marksmen celebrated in style, rolling to a 6645 victory. After an unexpected snow/ ice layoff, the squad traveled to Greenhill for a Friday morning bout. The Hornets were on fire from the three-point line and jumped out to an early first-quarter lead. However, freshman Nathan Davis knocked down a couple of longballs and provided tremendous defensive activity to help SM forge st. mark’s school of texas

a halftime advantage. Junior Colin Smith (19 points) and senior Harrison Ingram (27 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds) were unstoppable in the second half, as the Lions came away with a 80-67. The current 4-0 record tied St. Mark’s with Oakridge for a share of the lead in the North Zone standings. However, the two schools would never get to meet, meaning that a rescheduled Friday night game at ESD would be St. Mark’s last SPC game of the season. ESD’s comparatively fresh legs showed early, as the Marksmen made numerous mistakes (11 first-half turnovers) and struggled mightily to shoot the ball accurately (4-for-28 from 3-point range). Early in the fourth quarter, the Lions trailed by double digits. However, a huge secondhalf rebounding effort from junior Tate Laczkowski (9 after the break) and a clutch three from junior sharp-shooter, Corvin Oprea, filled the void left by their injured classmate, Colin Smith, and cut the margin to 6 with two minutes remaining. Scrappy energy from the speedy guard combo of Davis, senior Jake Laufenberg, and junior Caleb Vanzant generated important turnovers that gave the Lions a chance to tie the game late. Harrison Ingram led all scorers with 20 points and had the ball in his hands with seconds to play and the team down 3. He made a nifty move to create separation, hoisted the shot on-target… but it rolled in and out, resulting in SM’s first North Zone loss in three seasons. 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

The season would finish with a final home game against the Dallas Thunder. Three juniors would reach double figures: Caleb Vanzant did not miss a shot from the field and led all scorers with 11, Tate Laczkowski put up 10 to go along with 7 rebounds, and Corvin Oprea also finished with 10. Junior Colin Smith endured nagging pain to notch 8 points and 6 rebounds, and seniors Luke Annett, Connor Gaffney, Jake Laufenberg, Luke Nayfa, and Sarbik Saha combined for more than 20 points and 20 rebounds. Freshman Nathan Davis united with three fellow underclassmen, Jack Jackson, Rapha Mitterer-Claudet, and Arjun Khatti, to prove that the program’s future is in good hands and to help put the finishing touches on a dominant 74-48 win. Harrison Ingram concluded his illustrious high school career with a tripledouble – a fitting finish for a player whose unselfish play-making has earned him a host of accolades, including the premier title of McDonald’s All-American, given to the country’s twenty-four best seniors each year. It is always easy to talk about characteristics of manhood such as “courage” and “honor,” but living out those ideals in the face of adversity is an altogether different story. The patience and grace with which this team, undoubtedly one of the all-time greats in St. Mark’s rich athletic history, handled hardship was truly astounding. Their poise and championship spirit shone through and rendered 25

them even more impressive than anyone could have ever imagined. On the court, there was no denying their collective greatness. However, it was their togetherness and toughness amidst ups and downs beyond their control that

will have people talking for years to come. What a season! What a team!!

In retrospect, the 2019-2020 season would be remembered as much for the good fortune of completing the season before the looming pandemic as it was for the Lions remarkable run to an SPC championship. The 2020-2021 campaign would not experience the same good fortune as the entire athletic program would have to endure the many challenges of competing in the midst of a pandemic. The Lions eagerly anticipated the opportunity to defend their title; however, there would be no title to defend as the SPC cancelled the season culminating tournament. Thus, the focus would turn to zone play and the hopes of a first-place finish in 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

the north zone. The season began well as the Lions were able to host Prestonwood Christian Academy (3-1) and Ft. Worth Nolan (3-0), resulting in two victories. St. Mark’s was remote for the week after the Thanksgiving holiday resulting in the cancellation of the return leg at Nolan. The Lions were able to play Prestonwood and managed to post a two-goal shutout. Covid protocols at Trinity Valley forced the cancellation of the next match. The suspension of scheduling new matches made rescheduling or replacing cancelled matches impossible. Thus, St. Mark’s had played only three matches leading up to the final week before the 29

holidays. A bit of good fortune saw the Lions able to play three matches in the same week. An away match at Bishop Lynch where players had to wear masks on the field proved to be a stiff test that St. Mark’s survived (2-1). The Lions then hosted Greenhill who were playing their first game of the season. Despite strong play early, the Lions had to overcome a second half surge from the Hornets to sustain victory (4-1) with two goals against the run of play. St. Mark’s finished the week with a shutout victory at Trinity Christian Academy (2-0). St. Mark’s trained throughout the second week of the holiday to help them maintain their touch and fitness. Furthermore, with no alumni match, St. Mark’s was able to get much needed match experience by hosting TCA. In one of the most entertaining matches of the season, the Lions took an early two-goal lead only to see the Trojans equalize before halftime. A surge of goals late in the second half saw St. Mark’s earn a 5-2 victory. After a week of remote learning, St. Mark’s traveled to Country Day for the first north zone counter of the season. While the Lions were playing their eighth match of a limited season, the Falcons were playing their first. St. Mark’s used such an advantage to their favor in posting a six-goal shutout. The Lions continued their rich vein of form later in the week when they shut out Trinity Valley (6-0) ensuring their place at the top of the north zone table. 30

St. Mark’s was playing some of its best soccer of the season when a significant increase in the number of members of the School community who tested positive for COVID 19 warranted another shutdown. As a result, several matches had to be postponed, rescheduled, or cancelled and valuable training sessions were lost. A moratorium lasting over two weeks was exacerbated by a daunting schedule that required playing five matches in five days awaited them. The Lions traveled to Cistercian, whose only blemish was a draw with ESD. Cistercian had been able to maintain a training schedule and play their counter matches so that only St. Mark’s stood between them and a north zone championship. Despite a valiant effort, the Lions lacked sharpness, especially in the final third, due to the extended layoff. By the time St. Mark’s discovered their rhythm, they were two goals down with only 25 minutes remaining. The Lions created several sure chances but capitalized only once. A most pernicious Hawks’ defense prevailed with one-goal victory (1-2). The Lions had little time to recover, traveling to ESD the following evening where they defeated the Eagles 4-0. After a day to recover because of ice, St. Mark’s played two matches in subfreezing temperatures that hovered around twenty-four degrees for the entire day. During the morning, Greenhill hosted St. Mark’s. In an exciting match with plenty of chances created, the Hornets took an early lead on a controversial call by the st. mark’s school of texas

referee. Forced to chase the game from the midway point of the first half, St. Mark’s desperately and relentlessly attacked the stingy Greenhill defense that succumbed to the pressure with only minutes remaining. An exciting flurry of chances saw no additional goals and the match ended in a draw (1-1). Late that afternoon, the Lions were finally able to celebrate Senior Night, hosting Oakridge. The Owls provided little resistance as St. Mark’s dominated from the opening whistle on their way to posting another shutout (6-0). In circumstances that seemed appropriate for the season, the next day’s match with Casady was cancelled because wintry weather would hinder travel for the Cyclones. A challenging and (hopefully) unique set of circumstances adversely affected the performance of this year’s varsity team. Nevertheless, there were so many good things to celebrate. The tangibles are easy to note from the empirical data. The Lions averaged

2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

almost three-and-a half goals per game while only conceding six-tenths of a goal per game. In a season where numerous games were cancelled and there were long periods without training, St. Mark’s lost only once. In fact, dating back to last season, the Lions won eighteen consecutive matches (spanning fifty-five weeks). Regardless of such significant milestones, it is the undaunted, collective spirit of the players on the team that is truly worthy of celebration. Their steadfast dedication to give their best effort despite circumstances that were often discouraging speaks volumes about the character of the team. Of special note, is the leadership of the captains and the enthusiasm of the seniors: Michael, Luis, Knobel, Henry, Cristian, Christian, and Eric. Little was taken for granted by these fine young gentlemen. Each day that the team was able to train or play a match was a great day.

SWIMMING VARSITY Head Coach Trent Calder Assistant Coaches Kevin Boone Spencer Dornin David Fox A late start to the season with new Head Coach Trent Calder during a pandemic is not the typical starting headline that you see in a recap. However, for the 2021 St. Mark’s Swim team this would be the case, but the Tradition of Excellence established by past and present Marksmen held true. In addition to the late start the Lions would find more hurdles (for their protection and the schools) with an additional week of remote learning after Thanksgiving break and Christmas/New Years break. Then the school wide Covid Pause added an additional 3 weeks for the swim 34

Captains James Carr Aayan Khasgiwala Leo Ohannessian Jack Palmer Daniel Wu team late January to early February leading up to the day before the 1st scheduled SPC Date. However, the Polar Vortex made quick work of that and the meet was postponed not once but twice with the final SPC North Championship happening February 24 with full recap of that victory below. Reading between the lines that is the extended breaks and holidays what you haven’t heard yet is the amazing work these boys put in. Of the 72 practices we were supposed to have we were able to practice/ compete on 38 of those days. Twice in that period of time we had 13 st. mark’s school of texas

days of uninterrupted practices, and with 5 weeks out of SPC North we had 6 practices total. This should be an amazing indicator to what the team accomplished in 32 of those 38 practices between November and January 18th. Everyday this group pushed themselves and their teammates. The competitiveness was there, but it was the conversations in between that made the differences. Seeing the Captains speak up mid set to get guys going, and seeing their leadership trickled down to the lower classmen with juniors and sophomores speaking up, encouraging and challenging each other, that was when we coaches knew we were going to be tough to beat no matter what the situation. With only 3 meets under our belts before SPC the boys gave it their best efforts and below is what transpired. Off with a bang, sophomore Jerry Fox, and seniors Jack Palmer, James Carr and Mason Westkaemper started the meet off with a 1st Place victory in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:37.67, just under 6 seconds faster than 2nd Place Cistercian and 4 seconds faster than the top team in the SPC South John Cooper School. The victories wouldn’t stop there. The Lions would go on to win 9 of the 11 events including all of the relay events. 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

Senior Leo Ohannessian had a great meet winning 1st in all four of his events. He started off with the 200 Free setting a new personal record with a 1:43.52, and senior Ryan Park came in third with a time of 1:47.47 which was his top time of the season. Fellow Lion Brett Honaker came in 4th with a 1:47.69 just out touched by Park, and sophomore Sammy Larkin put in his top time of the season with at 1:55.12. Up next was the 200 IM and senior David Yang would strike gold with his top time of the season of 2:02.04 out touching FWCD swimmer Reese Nelson by 11 hundredths of a second. Fellow senior Daniel Wu would come in 5th with a time of 2:04.68, freshman Anderson Selinger would place 7th with a 2:18.68, and junior Miki Ghosh would score points coming in 8th with his top time of 2:23.96. The 50 Freestyle was next and senior Mason Westkaemper was looking to claim the top spot, however it was sophomore Jerry Fox beating out his fellow Lion with a time 21.74 to Westkaemper’s 22.18. Freshman Adam Kappelman, in his first race of the day, dropped his top time of the season with a 23.68 which was strong enough for a 4th place finish giving the Lions much needed points.

35

The 100 Butterfly would follow the 50 Free, and seniors Jack Palmer and James Carr would place 4th and 5th, respectively. Palmer was back in SPC Form with a time of 53.93, just 7 tenths of a second off his best at last year’s SPC Meet and James Carr would have a new lifetime best of 54.47, five seconds better than his previous year’s SPC Meet time. Lastly, freshman Adrian Lutgen finished 6th with a time of 1:00.06 which was his lifetime best in the event and gave valuable points to the Lions. The 100 Free saw Ohannessian back on top with a new personal best 47.10 a full second and a half faster than his personal best the season before, and Jerry Fox was back on podium being narrowly out touched by Ohannessian by 8 hundredths of a second with a time of 47.18. Honaker and Westkaemper came in 4th and 5th, respectively, with 49.07 and 49.88 capping off St. Mark’s strongest event with 25 points in the SPC North Meet and 21 points for an unofficial “virtual” SPC meet when all times were compiled from the North and South Zone meets. The 500 Free was next and this had been St. Mark’s weakest event all season. However, the long taper would pay off with senior Ryan Park in the top spot with a time of 5:00.36 and sophomore Sammy Larkin increasing his personal best to 5:10.57, seven seconds better 36

than his previous lifetime best at Southlake Carroll January 14. Lutgen, who had just completed the 100 Fly just five min prior to this event, would come in 5th with a time of 5:35.45 and sophomore Michael Gao would come in 6th providing more valuable points for the Lions. The 200 Freestyle Relay saw crosstown rival Greenhill showing off their talent, between them and the Lions this event showcased 8 of the top ten 50 Freestyle times of the day. It was a strong time of 1:29.10 however the Lion’s out touched Greenhill with a final time of 1:28.89. Westkaemper (22.23), Carr (22.92), Honaker (21.81), and Ohannessian (21.81) had a fantastic race and battled from start to finish. The 100 Backstroke is the Lion’s weakest event of the meet however there is light for the Lions. Senior Aayan Khasigwala had a welcome back race with a time of 1:01.24 just 15 hundredths off his lifetime best. Having been battling a knee injury since last spring to get back into shape with an abbreviated season and help score points for his team is just one of the reasons his leadership was so valuable this season. Selinger again found points for the Lions coming in 8thwith a time of 1:01.98, just out touching teammate Ethan Gao whose 1:02.19 was his new best. st. mark’s school of texas

Then there is “Back to Back Jack.” The 100 Breast has been dominated by Jack Palmer for the past 2 years. He again captured the top spot… this time his 59.35 out touched Greenhill’s top swimmer by half a second and both swimmers would go 1,2 when times for both SPC zone were compiled. Senior David Yang had a strong showing coming in 3rd with a time of 1:02.76 which was good enough for 5th overall in SPC when times were compiled. With the meet already won by the Lions, the pride shown by this particular pride of lions was inspiring as they gave it everything they had in the last event of the day. With fatigue starting to show due to the lack of practice, sophomore Fox, junior Honaker, and seniors Park & Ohannessian put forth their best effort and closed out the SPC North Zone Championship with a victory in the 400 Free Relay. The final time was 3:15.52 (Fox - 48.52, Honaker - 48.68, Park - 50.40, Ohannessian - 47.92) and beat the second place team (3:21.96) by over 6 seconds.

Covid-19 changed the scope for the Lion’s 2020-2021 wrestling season. Our practices were limited to non-contact practices focusing on weight training, running, and noncontact drills aided by Shot-Sleds and numerous throwing dummies. Just as the season was concluding without any competitions under our belt, and we were transitioning to the Spring Sport season, the decision to allow wrestling competition was awarded. Having started the season with 25 wrestlers on the roster, this new time frame

came at a consequence of losing most of the team due to their spring commitments. Suffice it to say, St. Mark’s wrestling started the new season with six wrestlers and started wrestling practices on 8 March with our first scrimmages on 13 March.

St. Mark’s Wrestling’s season opener was a dual scrimmage at W.T. White High School. It consisted of dual matches with Bryan Adams HS, Sunset HS, Newman Smith HS, and W.T. White HS. Out of 12 matches, the

Lions won 10. One of the great concessions and stories of the season was for junior returning state champion, Elijah Ellis. Elijah was training and competing in track and wrestling. On this Saturday of competition, he wrestled four matches in the morning then ran a Personal Record in the 100m sprint in the afternoon. The next competition was the Texas Prep State Wrestling Championship on 17 April 2021 at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas. This tournament was close to being cancelled this year, but with the arbitration and perseverance of SPC and TAPPS coaches, athletic directors, and Headmasters, we were able to compete at the Prep State level. To ease the burden on Liberty Christian School, the St. Mark’s wrestling family stepped up to run operations for the tournament. To facilitate a Covid-friendly environment, only the top four wrestlers from TAPPS and the top four from SPC per weight class were invited to the Prep State Tournament. Therefore, there were only 15 total teams at just under 110 wrestlers who participated in the annual event. With only six Lions in the hunt, we completed a remarkable run at team accolades. Our fourth-place finish moved us up from eighth 40

place in 2020, and eleventh place in 2019. More notably, all six wrestlers made it to the medal rounds and received hardware. Freshman Quina Perkison 4th Place at 113lbs Sophomore Hayward Metcalf 1st Place at 126lbs Junior Jedidiah Kim 1st Place at 132lbs Senior Cooper Ribman 2nd Place at 152lbs Senior Jackson Fair 4th Place at 160lbs Junior Elijah Ellis 3rd Place at 195lbs All six wrestlers then travelled to the east coast to compete in the Prep National Wrestling Championship in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. This is our biggest and most prestigious tournament of the season, and with a little under a month of preparation, we had three Marksmen made it to the “Blood Round” (Quina Perkison, Cooper Ribman, and Elijah Ellis). This round is where you win, and you are an All-American. Unfortunately, we did not come out of the round with a wrestling victory, but the experience and effort were well worth the price of admission. Our Lion wrestlers were victorious in heart and in competition.

After missing the first three weeks of February due to Covid safety precautions and a oncein-a-decade winter storm, the St. Mark’s Varsity baseball team entered the spring season with enthusiasm and optimism despite those unprecedented challenges. The Lions were led by a talented group of nine seniors: Luke Annett, Jacob Bell, Jake Daniels, Abe Echt, Marlon Henderson, James Petrikas, Daniel Sanchez, Klyde Warren, and Alex Zuch. Second-year Junior lettermen – Toby Barrett, Cole Norman, and Camden Reeves – were joined by fellow Junior newcomers Cal Graham, Will Pechersky, and Max Vafa.

Silas Hosler, our lone sophomore, returned for his second season on the Varsity squad.

Following a brief tryout period and one scheduled practice, the baseball team opened on the road with four difficult matchups. Dodging a rainy late-February forecast, the Lions squared off on the turf against Shelton. In a close and competitive first game, St. Mark’s was eventually bested by the Chargers, 7-5. The next week, the Lions ventured five minutes down the road to play in the annual Hillcrest Tournament. Facing one of DFW’s top-pitching prospects in the opening round of games, st. mark’s school of texas

St. Mark’s battled Hillcrest’s star hurler for five plus innings before finally falling, 0-4. The second game of the tournament got away from the Lions in the middle innings against Legacy Christian, but St. Mark’s gained its first victory of the spring the next day with a quality win over Rice. It would be a while before the Lions secured their second win (HSAA), which was preceded by several tough losses to perennial powers Dallas Christian, Bishop Lynch, and Covenant Christian. Battled-tested and ready for conference play, the baseball team traveled over to North Arlington to play Oakridge in early North Zone action. Timely hitting, solid defense, and quality pitching gave St. Mark’s the win against a very good Owls’ team. The Lions then walloped Cassady in Oklahoma

City before falling to Trinity Valley at home a few days later. Perhaps the most notable highlight of the season occurred during the epic comeback and walk-off win vs. Greenhill, which improved St. Mark’s to 3-1 in conference play. However, back-to-back losses against Cistercian and Fort Worth Country Day took the wind out of our team’s sails in regard to winning the North Zone. The final contest of the spring pitted St. Mark’s against the Eagles of ESD. Despite falling behind 0-2, the Lions roared back, scoring six unanswered runs in a thrilling 6-2 victory. The coaching staff would like to thank the players, parents, Athletic Department, field crew, and administration for their support of an enjoyable and memorable spring season.

The season started off later than usual due to the uncertainty of COVID but the spirit and desire of our oarsmen was undiminished. Thirty-seven young men joined the team and typical Texas spring weather kept us guessing daily whether we would be working out on the water or at the school. Our usual regatta schedule was shaken up with the Heart of Texas being cancelled and the fate of the Texas State Championships and the Central Youth Championships undecided. Despite not having set competitions to focus on, the hard work began in earnest. The first goal on the horizon was a 2k the week before spring break. The 2k test is a benchmark test

which demands full effort and leaves an athlete exhausted with the knowledge of exactly where they stand physically and mentally. While individual performances were impressive, the overwhelming support the team offered up to its own, to do the best they could and be the best they can, is what stands out and makes this year’s Lion’s Crew special.

48

Buck Elliott Blake Hudspeth Evan McGowan

An informal opportunity to race came at the end of March. The Rowing Club of the Woodlands invited the crew team down to The Woodlands for a scrimmage. Twenty boys raced in nine doubles races and four quad races against crews of similar skill level in three st. mark’s school of texas

separate races. The format was head-to-head racing on open water. Each double paired up with an equal from the Rowing Club of the Woodlands and raced for 750 meters. After all doubles had raced, competitors lined up again against a new opponent for another 750 meter head to head. For many of the crews it was their first racing experience. The head-to-head racing was on water without lanes unlike our traditional spring sprints. This added the pressure of steering and navigation to competition. The doubles races served as a good chance for the team to shake off the nerves of not having raced in a year as well as an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the lake for the quad race which was much more difficult at a length of 1500 meters. Short doubles races tended to favor the crews with a more efficient stroke and technique while the 1500 meter quad pieces favored the crews with horsepower and skill. The quad races proved to be a much tighter competition as Lions crew had now warmed up and had become comfortable with the course. The first quad race was for the novice rowers. Each team fielded two quads. Lions Crew came in second and fourth. The 2V race was next with Marksmen fighting their way for a second-place finish. The Varsity quads were evenly matched in skill and strength. Lions crew led from the start and finished first but not without challenges. The Woodlands put on a strong 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

sprint in the last 500 meters but were unable to push past the lead held by St. Mark’s. The boys were thrilled to be able to compete and the experience left everyone wanting more. The Oklahoma City Riverport community offered another chance to row on April 10th. The Oklahoma City Invitational was only open to teams in a three-hour traveling distance of OKC which brought the Dallas crews, OKC and Tulsa together in an event which captured most of the potential events possible given the oneday race format. Twenty-six boys where able to make it to race in the Varsity Quad event, Novice Quad and Novice Doubles events. The top varsity quad came in first ahead of Oklahoma City’s A and B boat as was well as ESD. The Novice 2x came in first and the Novice 4x’s came in 3rd and 4th in the finals. The White Rock Rowing club hosted the next regatta on April 17th. The race was held in a slightly different format with boats competing in flights of up to six competitors. In the first Mens 1x flight, Blake Hudspeth took first place beating out Texas Rowing Center and Episcopal School of Dallas. The next flight saw Marksman Paul Valois take 2nd place and Sam Morgan take 4th. In the single flight of the Mens Varsity 4x St. Mark’s took 2nd. The Mens 2V 2x took 3rd behind two of Texas Rowing Centers best while the Novice 4x’s took 2nd and 3rd in both flights of that event. The 2V 4x St. Mark’s came in 4th. It was 49

our first opportunity to have the entire team present at a regatta. This left two weeks to prepare for the most important event of our season, USRowing’s Central Youth Championship Regatta in Oklahoma City. Twenty-six clubs entered three hundred and fiftyseven boats in forty-eight events. St. Mark’s entered five events with 9 entries. The racing format was a 1900 meter time trials with the top six times to qualify for the 2000 meter finals on Sunday. All nine boats advanced to the Sunday finals. Brendan Kelly finished 6th in his U17 1x final. Nate Wilson, Christian Neilser, Ian Dalrymple and Thomas Goglia finished 5th in the Novice 4x while the 4x of Zack Goforth, Kevon Mostafavipour, Isaac Song and Tomek Marczeski finished 4th. Only a time trial was held for the Novice 2x event. Out of seventeen competitors, Zack Goforth and Kevon Mostafavipour came in 2nd, Isaac Song and Tomek Marczewski came in 3rd and Nate Wilson and Thomas Goglia came in 5th. The 2V event saw Marksman rowers come in 2nd and 3rd. Soham Verma and Sam Morgan finished 2nd with Buck Elliott and Spiros Hallax coming in 3rd. The Varsity 4x event provided a lot of excitement and a bit of drama. In the time trials Lions crew of Drake Elliott, Evan McGowan, Paul Valois, and Blake Hudspeth came to an all but complete stand still in a minor course correction caused by a bridge abutment jumping into their race lane. Ever vigilant, the crew hammered through the final 50

1000 meters to finish a mere five seconds behind the fastest time. Marksman oarsmen returned to the finals, unthwarted, to easily secure first place by open water. The 1st place finish will secure the 4x’s spot in the Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida in June. The old idiom goes “an army marches on its stomach” and that can be said about an athletic team as well. If it were not for parent support, these regattas would not be possible. The organizational support they provide allows the coaches to focus on the boys and the boys to focus on their racing. Stacy and Andrew Elliott and Sally and Brent Hudspeth have my enduring gratitude for all they have done this season to support the boys, keep them fed and comfortable and to keep the coaches caffeinated. Also, I cannot thank Sean Lissemore and Josh Friesen enough for working through the hurdles we faced this season to give us what we needed to get to competitions. Coaches Miga and Duessel are an integral of this teams’ success. I could not manage without their help.

The St. Mark’s golf team returned a strong roster and hit the ground running in every way! During their first competitive outing on March 2nd, fifteen Marksmen woke up bright and early and made the lengthy trek to Fort Worth for the All Saints Invitational, where they represented in victorious fashion!! The five-man group consisting of juniors Mac McKenzie, Anashay Monga, and George Warren, along with sophomores Logan Johnson and George Warren combined for a winning score of 309, six strokes better than the runner-up. Monga and Johnson were both one stroke away from finishing atop the individual leaderboard, and the fact that seven Lions played in 52

Captains Rex Corey Mac McKenzie Anashay Monga the low 80’s or better (McKenzie leading the way with 78) revealed the depth and potential of this invested group of young men. The following week, juniors Mac McKenzie, Anashay Monga, George Warren and sophomores Logan Johnson and James Thomson competed in the first ever Lietzke Invitational, which featured four of the most accomplished north Texas private school programs in recent history. All Saints Episcopal, John Paul II, and Trinity Christian Academy joined the Lions for an 18-hole stroke play tournament on The Creek Course at Indian Creek in Carrollton. Wind was a factor, but st. mark’s school of texas

all 5 Marksmen played solid golf and scored 83 or better. The team total of 323 proved to be the best in the field and earned St. Mark’s a spot in the championship match – an 18-hole afternoon bout with runner-up John Paul II on The Lakes Course. Following a strategic draft of sorts to determine pairings, both teams set out for a test of skill, stamina, and mental toughness. The Lions seized an early advantage with Johnson and Warren forging wide margins. However, the remaining three matchups were up in the air as the players hit the home stretch. One particularly dramatic pairing included junior Anashay Monga, whose opponent was the second-best overall scorer during the morning round. Anashay had a stellar start (an even 36 through nine holes), but his opponent sank a pair of hole-halving chips and two long putts to give himself a chance. In thrilling fashion, eighteen holes was not enough, and the action extended to three playoff frames. Anashay pulled out a brilliant par (4) save on the first and then got robbed on a should-havebeen birdie that somehow lipped out on the par-4 second. After a terrific tee shot on the par-5 third that he followed up with a solid three-wood, Anashay knocked a clutch approach to within three feet for a certain birdie. However, his opponent bombed a perfect hybrid into the middle of the green and sank the eagle putt to make things interesting for the Lions. The pressure was now on 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

for Mac McKenzie and especially James Thomson, who drew the unenviable task of taking down an opponent who, during the morning round, shot the lowest score in the field. In true underdog March Madness style, James trailed throughout the match and was down two holes with five to play before winning three of the final 5 and halving the other two to pull off the stunning upset. Simultaneously, Mac McKenzie caught fire when it counted, cementing a hard-earned team trophy with a 4-1 match win. Way to go, Lions! On March 22nd, the team competed at the Dallas Invitational Tournament hosted by Jesuit at Brookhaven. St. Mark’s took home hardware in both the varsity and JV divisions, which is always an achievement! A few strokes here and there could have landed the Lions atop the podium in the varsity division, but, altogether, it was a terrific outing for 20 SM competitors, replete with numerous highlights. First, junior Logan Johnson posted a 76 on the Masters on a day when weather was far less than ideal. Second, junior Mac McKenzie used superb ball-striking to finish a mere 6 strokes behind the overall leader. Freshman Hudson Brown capitalized on a spring break that was devoted to golf by turning in the best score of his relatively inexperienced career, and senior Rajan Joshi also turned in an all-time best, thanks to a particularly stellar 9-hole stretch. Veteran Rex Corey overcame 53

an injury that made swinging a club excruciating and turned in a gutsy performance, and Henry Hoak’s 85 was among the very best of freshmen participating in the event. Junior Dylan Dropkin outplayed the majority of the field, and a pair of three-man clusters (Anashay Monga, George Warren, and Tommy Zheng in the varsity division and Matthew Fan, Max Levy, and Spencer Burke in the JV division) overcame some shaky holes to give their squads a critical boost. Impressive team effort across the board! The month of April started with an exhilarating match. Juniors Matthew Fan and Logan Johnson, sophomore Tommy Zheng, and freshmen Harry Wang and Charlie Hill competed against Shelton. Johnson and Zheng led the way, both turning in solid 2-over-par performances to secure comfortable victories, which put the pressure squarely on the shoulders of Hill, Wang, and Fan. Their opponents scored well out of the gates and held leads of at least 1 stroke in each match after three holes. The Lions battled to flip the script, but after 8 holes, Shelton maintained a 2-hole lead in 2 of the 3 matches with 2 holes remaining. Wang could not quite win the 8th but overcame an errant tee shot on 9 with a MARVELOUS up-and-down (outdone only by a par-saving pitch shot that hit the pin and gave him a tap-in win). Fan also had a tremendous 9th hole, thanks to stellar back-to-back swings that gave him a 10-footer 54

for birdie. However, he was also unable to win the 8th, which thrust Hill into a must-win situation. With the score all square through 6 holes, Charlie took advantage of his opponent’s mistakes on the 7th but then bogeyed the 8th to set up a 9th hole grand finale. Unphased by the moment, Charlie calmly went about his business and won the hole, giving the Lions a 3-2 victory. Outstanding! The following week, ten SM golfers made the trek out to Fort Worth for a SPC North Zone preview. Junior Mac McKenzie looked like he belonged at Augusta National after 5 holes (which he played at 3 under). He 1-putted his first 7 holes en route to finishing 3rd overall in the tournament with a 74. Four other Marksmen also finished in the 70’s (George Warren had a 76, Logan Johnson had a 77, and James Thomson and Tommy Zheng both came in at 79). The team score of 306 was a single stroke better than Trinity Valley, which earned St. Mark’s its 3rd tournament win of the season. Incredible!! On April 19th, sixteen Lions met at Brookhaven Country Club for the first ever Daisy Invitational. Hockaday, along with several other SPC schools, competed in two separate boys/girls divisions on the Champions course. The format was a two-man scramble, so scores were far lower than normal, since players were able to both hit and then strategically work together to determine the better of the two shots to play next. Juniors Mac McKenzie and George Warren led st. mark’s school of texas

the Lions with a joint score of 61, which was good enough for fourth place overall (ESD’s top pair shot a 60, and Trinity Valley had one duo also post a 60 and another 59 en route to winning the overall team score title). The sophomore team of James Thomson and Tommy Zheng shot 65, as did the Logan Johnson/Anashay Monga tandem. However, this day was all about the seniors, many of whom were competing in their final event in a Lions uniforms. It was so rewarding to see Luke Piazza back in action after a long layoff! Aaryan Puri had never competed before, but William Aniol was the perfect playing partner to make the experience fun and fulfilling. John Hubbard and Rajan Joshi complemented each other very well en route to earning a score that was even better than the goal they had set for themselves. Luke Nayfa and Trevor Crosnoe continued their long-time rapport, and Gabe Bines joined forces with program leader and captain, Rex Corey, to represent the program well. The highlight of the day, though, came courtesy of Sai Thirunagari. Working together with Luke Piazza, Sai capitalized on a great drive and second shot with the perfect 60-yard wedge to a par-5 green that rolled in for a sensational eagle! What a way for those guys to finish their career!! Many thanks for all the seniors’ fabulous leadership and sacrifice for the good of the program!! Due to Covid’s affect on the season’s finish, an abbreviated 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

18-hole North Zone tournament would prove to be the Lions’ final event. Weather looked ominous at times, but, thankfully, aside from a few occasional sprinkles, conditions were pretty perfect and resulted in some very low scores. Logan Johnson was on fire – 5 birdies and an eagle that resulted in a 1-under-par 71. Congrats to Logan for finishing atop the leaderboard. Mac McKenzie had a stellar day, as well. He sank several long putts (including an 18th-hole birdie in front a sizeable group of finishers-turned-onlookers), chipped in for birdie on a different hole, and had one of the best 4-iron shots imaginable (240ish yards into the wind, and he set the ball 10 feet from the pin – amazing!). Anashay Monga posted a 75. He also had a dramatic finish – splitting a 30-foot-wide fairway, he still had to hit a punch shot because of a tree limb in the way; the second went awry, leaving him a terrible lie next to a bunker that he brilliantly cleared before sinking the ensuing putt to save a miraculous par. There were so many stellar shots and exhibitions of mental toughness. George Warren had two holes in which not-so-sandy bunkers led to unfortunate scores, and yet he maintained composure enough to play 2-over on the other 16 holes. Similarly, James Thomson had a perfect drive on the first hole but ended up in a divot that drastically affected his next shot and gave him a triple-bogey to start the day. A couple holes later, he experienced more bad luck and was forced to swallow a double55

bogey. However, he played the back nine at 1-under and finished with a 79, giving the Lions 4 scores in the 70’s and a team total of 300, one of the best in SM’s recent post-season tournament history. Two individuals who contributed richly to the focus and success of the entire team were assistant coach, Romil Mathur, and senior captain Rex Corey. Coach Mathur joined the squad after completing a highly successful senior season a year ago. His expertise and calm demeanor benefited players across the program all spring long. The team’s performance was also largely due to Rex Corey, who selflessly demonstrated all the traits that have rendered him an incredible leader in the program for four years. His upbeat personality and

humor encouraged teammates to overcome nervousness and enjoy the fun of the moment. Unfortunately, though, two opponents, Country Day (291) and Trinity Valley (299), turned in slightly better performances. What a tough way for the season to end! This special group of young men battled valiantly all season long to overcome a number of obstacles and perform at a high level. Their improvement reflected their extraordinary commitment to their craft. The seniors have had an outstanding presence in the program and leave behind a talented group of golfers who will look to build on this year’s success all off-season long. Congrats on the memorable 2021 campaign!

The story of the 2021 St. Mark’s lacrosse team was youth. Without a single senior on the team, this was the youngest, most inexperienced lineup in memory. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, there were plenty of learning opportunities and teachable moments along the way. The team fought hard and improved consistently throughout the year, finishing 3-2 in THSLL north district play and earning an overall state RPI ranking of 7th at the end of the regular season and the #2 seed overall in the Class A State Playoff Bracket.

The start of the season was delayed several weeks to a combination of covid and an unprecedented snow storm. The Lions would open up the season with only 2 games prior to spring break, a victory over Prosper and a highly competitive loss against ESD. After the break, the Lions stretched their record to 3-1 with back to back sound victories against McKinney and Plano West. The next 3 games against state-ranked top 8 teams Allen, Southlake, and Lake Travis would be a tremendous learning experience. Each game was a nail biter, decided literally at the buzzer,

but all 3 were one goal losses. The Lions would finish the regular season with a complete, dominant win over Keller and a hard fought loss against Highland Park. The Lions entered post-season play as the #2 seed in the THSLL Class A State Playoff bracket. After a convincing 1st round win over Plano West 15-4, the Lions took on Houston Episcopal High School in the quarterfinals. Characteristic of playoff play, the game would be a battle, but the Lions prevailed 11-4 earning a spot in the Class A Final Four. Against Coppell in the Class A State semifinals, the Lions left it

all on the field, but were unable to come back from an early deficit, losing 8-10. This has been a good season authored by a group of young men who, although inexperienced, have worked hard, pushed, supported, cared for, and trusted each other, and never stopped improving. Furthermore, this season will set the stage for what promises to be a special season next year. The Lions will return every single player next year, the only team in the state to do so. The future will be bright for this group of young men.

The 2021 season started off with great unpredictability in the midst of the pandemic. In addition, practice would continue to be held at an offsite facility, due to the 2019 tornado. Despite these setbacks, 14 young men arrived on site with a lot of enthusiasm, and a sense of purpose.

more wins, the players gained confidence. The match against Greenhill, another rival, put the team to the test, as the players had to rally to make big comebacks and win the match. The last North Zone match proved to be another nailbiter. That evening, every player on the roster who hadn’t yet been in the starting lineup got the chance to play. These competitors demonstrated just how deep and capable this team is as they went on to achieve another victory while being cheered on enthusiastically by their teammates.

The season began with a friendly match against ESD, a longtime rival of St Mark’s. The Lions pulled off a sure win, despite missing one of their key players. This first victory would set the tone for the season. With every passing week, the team grew tighter as a unit and stronger as a team. As they accumulated 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

With a perfect 7-0 record, the team got the chance to compete 61

against the South Zone winner to determine the SPC winner for 2021. St Mark’s hosted St. John’s School of Houston at Turpin Stadium at SMU. It turned into an exciting night of hard-fought matches. In a fitting finale to an amazing season, Senior and #1 singles player for the Lions, Mark Motlow got to secure the title for his team by scoring the 3rd and final point for the team. The Lions finished the season with a perfect 9-0 record and as SPC

Champions, a feat which hadn’t been achieved in 19 years. Another individual record was set by the #3 singles player Patrick Flanagan, who completed the season with a personal 7-0 record, only dropping 2 games throughout, an unheard-of winning percentage of 96.7%. Overall, despite all the uncertainty of 2020 and 2021, the tennis team made the absolute best of the tough circumstances they were handed and achieved a most successful and most memorable season.

The 2021 Track & Field season was very successful in every aspect. There were all-time best marks set and almost everybody set personal best throughout the year. We won almost all the meets during the season and finished very high in others. The year ended with us winning the SPC North Zone Meet and the SPC Championship, our first since 2013!

distance races. Sam Eluemunoh in the throws.

The year started off good with a 1st place finish at the DFW Private School Circuit at Greenhill. We saw good performances from Jack Jackson and Blake Malouf in the sprints, and Fisayo and Sahil in the 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

Kit Colson Julian Ivarra Mike Mendoza Siddhartha Sinha

The next meet, the second installment of the DFW circuit, saw many strong performances by the Lions. Cristian, Jack and Fisayo led the sprinters to many PR’s. Sahil once again led the distance runners with notable performances from freshman Raja Mehendale, Asa McCaleb and Julian Ivarra. Enoch, Colin Bajec, and Blake Malouf all PR’d in the 300h. Sam, Mike Mendoza, and Julian Carlson led the throwers. Zane Wallace had a big day in the Long Jump. 63

The next meet, installment #3 of the DFW circuit, saw us host a 6-way meet and compete against Jesuit for the first time in 20+ years. The distance runners really shined that day with Sahil, Fisayo and Zach leading the way. Enoch and Colin had double PR’s in both the 110h and 300h.Sam and Mike contributed to the throws and Zane and Cristian contributed in the Horizontal jumps. The next meet, held during spring break, saw a smaller team compete in the DFW circuit #4 and the distance runner competing in the Texas Distance Festival later in the day. At DFW #4 Kit Colson reemerged after rehabbing his hip, Bryce Nivet and Shaan Mehta led the younger distance runners. That evening saw out top distance guys compete in the prestigious Texas Distance Festival in Southlake Carroll. They did not disappoint! First, Fisayo blasted a big PR in the 800m, running 1:58.76! Sahil then stepped to the line in the Elite 3200m race. He dropped a 9:16.36 to finish second and move himself on to the ALL-TIME list. The next meet was the DFW Circuit #5 at Prince of Peace. The Lions came out on Fire! First Sam exploded in the discus with a throw of 160’ 8”, good for #4 on the ALL-TIME list. Before that he PR’d in the shot put for another firstplace finish. Julian Carlson also had two PR’s in the throws. Zane Wallace had a PR in the Triple Jump. His mark of 45’ 10.75” was good enough to move him to #3 on the ALL-TIME list. Then we moved 64

to the track and Kit blasted two big sprints with a 10.75 for 100m and 22.48 in the 200m. Fisayo dropped a big PR in the 400m with a 52.11. Raja PR’d in both the 800m and 1600m. Enoch and Colin went 1-2 in both hurdles. And the 4 x 400R finished up the day with a season best of 3:28.71 The next week we hosted the 6th installment of the circuit. The highlight of the meet was the school record in the 100m by Kit. His 10.67 took down the 39 year od record of 10.69 by Rosser Newton. He led a 1-2-3 finish in that race. He came back to win the 200 as well. Zach won the 800m. Sahil cemented his name on yet another ALL-TIME list, this time in the 1600m. His time of 4:20.04 sit at #4. He had won the 3200m earlier in the met. Enoch won both hurdles. Sam led the throwers once again and Zane led the horizontal jumpers. All-in-all, the team had 53 pr’s throughout the meet. The following week we took a small team to Nick Finnegan Spring festival at St. John’s in Houston. This gave us a chance to see the powerhouses in the SPC South. Kit led the sprinters with his 21.56 in the 200m, missing the school record by .02 of a second. Jack also PR’d in the same race. Zach, Raja, Asa, and Julian led the distance runners to a great day. Enoch scored tow PR’s in the hurdles and broke 40.00 in the longer race. The 4x100R team of Temi Balogun, Kit, Cristian and Jack ran their fastest time of the year with a 43.03. Michael Vanesko PR’d in the Pole st. mark’s school of texas

Vault with a jump of 13’0”. Zane led the horizontal jumpers. The next meet was a “tune-up” meet before the SPC North Zone Championships. Resting some key people while lightening the load on others, we managed to find a few gems. Enoch ran a fast 200m, right after winning the 300h, which was after finally breaking 15.00 in the 110h.We ran four 4 x 800R teams to mix it up. Zane and Cristian jumped PR’d in the long jump and Sam led the throwers. Our next meet was the SPC North Zone meet. This year the meet took on a new format and the top 4 finishers in each event/relay qualified to the SPC Championships. On a overcast, windy first day, we turned up the heat and come away winners! Kit, Jack, and Cristian led the sprinters. Rapha Mitterer-Claudet and Alex Soliz had a big day in the 400m. Sahil won the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m leading to a sweep in the 800m a 1-2 finish in the 1600m and a 1-23-4-5 finish in the 3200m. Enoch had a big day as he ran PR’s in both hurdles with 14.94 and 38.99. Colin returned to action and finished 2nd in the 110h with a PR and 3rd in the 300h. The 4x100R, 4x400R, and 4x800R all qualified for the SPC Meet. Sam won the discus and finished 2nd in the shot put. Michael finished 2nd in the Pole Vault and Zane, Cristian and Rapha all qualified in the horizontal jumps. We had 17 PR’s during the 2 days. We scored 261 points to run away with the meet. We qualified 18 athletes in 15 different events. 2020-2021 Athletic Banquet

The SPC Track & Field Championships, although non-existent at the beginning of the season, were able to take place after all. The top four finishers from the SPC North and South Zones qualified for the Championships. St. Mark’s qualified at least one person in 15 out of 17 events. Outstanding performances were everywhere on May 8th in Hunt Stadium. Lion athletes won 8 events, produced 22 ALL-SPC awards, and scored 189 points in the meet! Certainly, the highlight of the meet was the performance of Christopher “Kit” Colson. His performances in the 100m and 200m were electrifying. First, in the 100m, he blasted out of the blocks and was never challenged. Riding a tailwind, Kit smashed the School record and SPC record with a time of 10.32! Breaking his own school record of 10.67 and the SPC Record of 10.57. Fifty-five minutes later, Kit got in the blocks for the 200m and again, ran uncontested, as he crossed the finish line in 21.24, again breaking the School record (21.54) and SPC record (21.31). The meet had some other great performances. Enoch Ellis won both hurdle races with times of 14.78 (PR) and 39.90 and also ran a leg on the 2nd place 4x400 Relay team. Sahil Dodda came away with 1st place in the 800m in a daring last-step lunge at the finish line, a 2nd in the 3200m, and a 3rd in the 1600m. Mike Mendoza had a huge day, winning the Shot Put with a throw of 47’ 3.5”, a PR by over 2 feet! Sam Eluemunoh won the 65

discus with a near PR and preceded that with a big PR in the Shot Put, finishing 2nd to Mike with a throw of 47’ 1”. Michael Vanesko earned the last SPC Champion title with a 1st place in the Pole Vault, equaling his PR of 13’ 0”. Others’ ALL-SPC performances were Zane Wallace in the Long Jump (2nd place) with a near school record jump of 23’ 4”, 2nd in the Triple Jump, and a leg on the 4x400 Relay (2nd) team.

Other members of the team earning ALL-SPC were Fisayo Omonije (3rd in the 800m, 2nd in the 4x400 Relay, 2nd in the 4x800 Relay) and Cristian Pereira (2nd in the 4x400 Relay), and Zach Lightfoot, Bryce Nivet, and Sky Park (members of the 2nd place 4x800 Relay). This is the first SPC Championship in Track & Field in 8 years!

The Water Polo Team recently dominated North Region last week and put themselves in an amazing position to repeat (with a covid gap year) as the TISCA Water Polo State Champions.

was a 5-1 first quarter in favor of the Lions they never looked back, winning the game 20-3. Senior Mason Westkaemper led the team with 6 goals and Senior Leo Ohannessian was second with 4 goals.

Let’s take a look back into this 2021 Season and see why it has been so special. Coming off a late Polar Vortex SPC Championship Swim season, the Water Polo Team got back into the pool for 4 days prior to their first competition the South Lake Carrol Spring Break Throwdown. Their first game of the season was vs the host #4 Carroll Dragons. It 68

5-2. This would turn out to be one of the best things to happen to the Lions all season. The boys, led by their captains, stepped up and fought back the next quarter one possession at a time and by half time it was tied 6-6. The 3rd and 4th Quarter were continuations of the 2nd quarter and the Lions would defeat Dallas 15-9. Ohannessian led the scoring with 8 goals and Junior Brett Honaker would be second with his 4 additional goals. The next weekend saw the Lions taking on 5th seed Guyer and 2nd (remember Dallas is unable to be considered) seed Flower Mound. After a grueling week of practices and the effects of a 5 week swimming taper in full force, the Lions were dragging and forced to dig deep this weekend. First up the Lions defeated Guyer 21-3, then with a short turn around the Lions defeated Flower Mound 10-7 in a game that was under complete control but fatigue from swim season saw the boys miss five 1 on nobody’s and a penalty shot. The next week of practice again pushed the boys further out of their comfort zone but they

started to respond strongly which translated well into the pool. Again playing Dallas and their first game against #3 Marcus, the chemistry was in full display. Another good game with Dallas saw the Lions coming out on top 16-9 and the boys continued that energy vs #3 Marcus defeating them 22-3. The Texas Cup was next, again #5 Guyer would go down 20-4 and #4 South Lake Carroll for the 2nd time saw the Lions defeating them 16-3. Ohannessian had 5 goals on the weekend and Westkaemper had 7 to lead the Lions in Scoring. ATHLETIC TRAINING STAFF Athletic Trainers

Matt Hjertstedt Doc Browning Natalie Bumpas

The student athletic trainers provide needed and valuable services to St. Mark’s athletics. They perform much of the daily labor of the athletic training room by helping with sideline set up and water needs, restocking supplies, and helping to keep the athletic training room organized and clean. Student athletic trainers also help out at athletic contests, often sacrificing hours of their own time to do so. As these young men progress in the athletic training room, they learn how to tape and treat various injuries, and how to use many of the modalities

available in this facility. This is a wonderful “hands on” learning experience for these Marksmen, and these young men gain the respect and gratitude of the athletes they serve. Matt, Natalie and Doc would especially like to thank Senior Blake Broom for his four years of service to the athletic training room. We also want to take an opportunity to thank Doc for his 36 years of service to the school as he transitions to retirement. Thank you so much Blake and Doc!
