CHAIRMEN’S AND CEO’S MESSAGE

W

ITH THE SECOND YEAR

of the pandemic behind us, we reflect on the last year that paradoxically feels both like a blink of an eye and an interminable march. It has been so long since we have had a “normal” year. Yet, through it all, we are amazed by the perseverance and strength of our community. While the last several years have tested our mettle in Sonoma County, we have certainly shown character to be proud of. Central to that character is a refusal to give up and the will to find a way forward no matter what uncertainty or challenge is in front of us. Examples of this tremendous resilience are how, even in some of the most difficult economic times, we have seen our members launch new businesses, we have seen business owners pick Sonoma County and Santa Rosa as their new home, we have seen the community come together in joy and celebration when given the opportunity, and we have seen progress in our impactful programs at the Chamber.

Jeremy L Little

It has been said about grit and success that believing things will be better tomorrow is a world apart from resolving to make them better. This resolve is, above all else, the good we see over the last year. We have highlighted just a few examples of people and programs that, in spite of every reason and rationale one could have for closing off from the world, have pushed ahead to make their dreams a reality and the lives in our community better.

Arron Friedman

It is a pleasure to highlight the people behind new and growing small businesses in our community, and from industries that don’t often get highlighted. This year’s magazine also focuses on central issues to our community and some of the organizations working to address them—issues like our kids’ mental health and academic success, the development of

affordable housing, and breathing life into Santa Rosa’s downtown. Of course, the Chamber has also worked tirelessly on your behalf to do whatever possible to help our community through the pandemic and shifting business restrictions. In addition to the small business grant program launched early in 2020 and our continuous advocacy on your behalf, we have also helped to organize employer vaccine drives, pushed for businesses to be allowed to operate when following safe practices, facilitated ongoing employerbased testing, and distributed thousands of free masks to employers for their employees and customers. None of this work can happen without the support of our members, those highlighted in this magazine and the hundreds of others who invest in our organization. We can’t thank you enough for your continued support. Every day, our team will continue to not just hope for better but be resolved to make the community better and support your organization in turn. We hope you enjoy this year’s magazine. Sincerely, JEREMY L LITTLE 2022 BOARD CHAIR

Youth Mental Health

Our Future

We all have a role in the vital efforts to strengthen the resilience & well-being of our community’s youth BY ANANDA SWEET

T

HE RESILIENCE OF CHILDREN and youth is

frequently cited, and in so many ways has been proven time and time again over the last few years. But experts agree that child and youth mental health is at crisislevel concern. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Children’s Hospital Association came together to declare a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health.

National screenings show that children, adolescents and teens have struggled emotionally during the pandemic more than any other age group. A global study recently found a doubling of serious clinical mental health diagnosis, with 1 in 4 youth experiencing depression and 1 in 5 experiencing anxiety, and found that youth mental health is not rebounding but has

continued to worsen over the course of the pandemic. In Sonoma County the pandemic and related school closures were preceded by back-to-back local disasters, the trauma of multiple wildfires, and school and child care center closures due to clean up, poor air quality, and power shutoffs. Our youth have felt the stress of political instability, and now COVID-related stay at home orders, economic uncertainty, disruptions in routine, and family stress. In 2020, early education and child care providers closed or reduced capacity and school age students transitioned to a whole new way of receiving an education online, which for so many has removed critical social interactions and valuable trusted relationships with teachers and adult mentors. In Sonoma County, high school students are failing classes at rates never before seen in our community. Seventy-one percent of Sonoma County high school students who participated in the national YouthTruth survey in May 2020 reported “feeling anxious about the future” as their number one barrier, a staggering finding unique to Sonoma County students among all communities in the country. Based on these data, we know the incoming workforce has the

highest numbers of anxiety, depression and stress ever recorded. This fact emphasizes a point we have long known at the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber, that investing in the next generation is critical for children and families in crisis today and is key to our future success as we prepare the workforce of the next generation. As our community addresses COVID recovery, mental health recovery planning is a critical component to address. We all have a role to play in reducing the stigma around mental health, and this crisis brings opportunities to talk more openly about mental health and to rally around support for organizations doing this meaningful work. Here is a look at a few of these organizations supporting youth mental health in our community: Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) provides supportive services to children, youth, and their families across Sonoma County. In addition to their emergency shelters and long-term housing facilities for teens and young adults, SAY offers communitybased programs that provide counseling, crisis intervention and prevention, and career training. SAY’s Counseling Services team supports youth and families through multiple avenues of mental health care: a clinic that provides individual and family therapy both in-person and via telehealth; grief support individually or in peer groups; and a School Mental Health team that is available on-site at 13 schools in 4 Sonoma County school districts.

imaginations to strengthen resilience and connections.” TLC Child & Family Services provides Trauma Informed Care to an average of 250 youth and families per day. Youth served range from 0-24 years old, many are in foster care, on probation, require special education services, and/or are at risk of being homeless. Journey Academy is a therapeutic non-public high school located on TLC’s main campus in rural Sebastopol with both residential and community students. Specialty mental health services are offered across all programs by TLC’s clinical team. At risk youth have never been as vulnerable as they are now. After enduring the COVID-19 pandemic they face increased burdens on their mental health, access to housing and overall stability. TLC’s CEO Susan Fette elaborates: “On a 2021 survey, 73% of youth expressed unmet mental health needs and listed mental health services as what they needed for success. This deficit is simply unacceptable. TLC Child & Family Services has been providing mental health services to youth for nearly 50 years. Each day we see the dramatic impact that such care makes on the lives of at-risk youth. Unfortunately, funding for mental health services is not always available. However, TLC continues to provide mental health services across several programs without compensation because we are committed to providing highquality treatment.”

SAY CEO Anita Maldonado says, “Every individual is different, but what we’re seeing now is only the tip of the iceberg. We’re starting to truly see the effects of this 2-year pandemic. In response, we need to change the paradigm of how we support our employees, especially our young people. We need to create a work culture that recognizes mental health as an essential part of overall health.” Child Parent Institute (CPI) is a family resource agency serving families and children throughout Sonoma County since 1978. Their continuum of care includes child and family therapy, family resource assistance providing concrete needs such as diapers, food, clothing or rental assistance, parent education with both parenting classes online and home visits, supported visitation, and a non-public school providing adolescent special education/ mental health services. “During the pandemic we have all experienced collective trauma, which requires a focus on the strength of collective resilience,” says Robin Bowen, CPI’s Executive Director. “We have found that the sum of our systems of care, when mobilized together, can hold the most vulnerable among us in a supportive and nurturing community environment. CPI has always offered therapy to individuals ages 6 through 21 who are struggling with a wide range of difficult life issues, but during these times this service has become ever so important. At our non-public school, we have expanded creative endeavors available to students. The creative impulse is one of the best ways to reclaim a sense of self and relationships when we have been threatened by trauma, and adults who want to help have only to help youth tap into their

school program. Hanna has expanded their programming with the creation of Hanna Institute, a community-focused institute for trauma prevention and care. Hanna Institute’s annual conference, The Summit, focuses on learning and sharing new and proven approaches to trauma-informed, trauma-resilient, and trauma-preventing practices. Additional upcoming projects use Hanna’s expertise in a trauma informed approach and include: the creation of a mental health hub to serve families and youth; professional training for the community in trauma prevention, assessment, and treatment; and providing residential facilities and support for foster youth. “Through all these efforts Hanna strives to ensure that every individual grows up resilient and healthy, unshackled from the impact of adverse childhood experiences and emotional trauma,” says Cameron Safarloo, Hanna’s CEO. “The investments made today will usher in a brighter future for thousands of young people and their families.” Chop’s Teen Club understands that relationships and social connection are incredibly important for youth mental health. Chop’s offers a safe space for teens to connect with each other and with a team of youth mentors. The 21,000 square foot facility is open to all Sonoma County 7th to 12th grade students after school and on weekends.

10

Chop’s staff mentors are dedicated to creating positive relationships with teen members through consistent checkins and mentoring, modeling positive behaviors, and teaching valuable hard and soft skills. Chop’s staff of mentors are committed to helping teen members achieve success in their futures and to see all the possibilities available to them. “As adolescents individuate from their parents, connection to peers and trusted adults is the building block to learning essential social and emotional skills,” says Chop’s Executive Director Melissa Stewart. “Creating opportunities for youth to connect, engage and discover their true potential is critical to the overall mental health of teens.”

Connections to future opportunities are more critical than ever in this time of uncertainty for our community’s youth. Now more than ever, students need to see a connection between what they are learning in school and real-life future opportunity, and to feel connected to their future potential.

• Career Technical Education (CTE) Foundation invests in innovative CTE courses and quality work-based learning activities that improve student engagement and provide opportunities to explore careers. CTE coursework and programs help students develop in-demand technical and work readiness skills that employers need and create an informed education-to-career pathway that will lead to a successful and fulfilling future. “Now more than ever local students need to see relevancy in their learning and a connection to their community,” says CTE CEO Kathy Goodacre. “Employers are critical to providing the path and inspiration for young people to see their future here in Sonoma County.”

convenes students, businesses and teachers, empowering our future workforce to become leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Incoming 9th grade students visit various STEM related companies where they interact with engineers and professionals, observe demonstrations, and participate in direct learning experiences and practical applications for STEM concepts.

Education

Schools naturally fill the essential opportunity for students to build caring relationships and for consistent connections with each other and trusted adults. Direct mental health support is critical to make sure students are ready to learn and succeed, and resources for schools and educators are vital. Given the magnitude of the crisis among students, and in response to the YouthTruth survey data, the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) has created a Behavioral Health Services Department that will strive to improve mental health and educational outcomes for all students. Leveraging grant funding, they will conduct screenings and provide direct counseling and crisis response services to Sonoma County students and schools, as well as connecting students and families to mental health supports in the community. SCOE acknowledges that training support will be critical and will provide collaboration and training for schools including social-emotional learning, educator and systems wellness, mental health screening, disaster and crisis readiness and response, suicide prevention, and adverse childhood experiences and trauma-informed practices. THe need for student support carries through post-secondary education. A December 2020 survey of Santa Rosa Junior College students assessed the impacts of COVID-19 and other crises of 2020. When asked about effects experienced from the pandemic, 45% of respondents cited mental health as a barrier to learning that negatively impacted their ability to stay in college.

COVID-19 stress and loss of social connections were the top two factors cited. The mental health of students was impacted by overwhelming emotions (61%), overwhelming anxiety (64%), and depression (39%) that limited their ability to function. Dr. Frank Chong, President/Superintendent of Santa Rosa Junior College shared: “Mental health challenges have been exacerbated by the pandemic as evidenced by our survey. What we need is more resources which will allow the County and SRJC to provide more services to our community.”

We all have a role to play

From early childhood to post-secondary, it is critical that children and adolescents have the resources they need to be successful in life. Quality early education and care provides critical social emotional learning opportunities that shape the way children’s brains are wired to interact with the world; local schools provide critical mental health resources and ongoing opportunities for meaningful social connections and positive role models; youth serving nonprofits do fantastic work in our community every day to support children and families and fill holes in the social safety net; and the business community has an enormous opportunity to directly build its future workforce by helping students to see themselves in future potential careers. We all can see this crisis as a call to action—to finding the role we can play in supporting our youth, in destigmatizing mental health, and in opportunities to support the many local nonprofits that do this meaningful work. The Santa Rosa Metro Chamber will continue to focus on increased access to quality early education and child care, family friendly workplace policies, and opportunities for youth to feel connected in the community and to opportunities for the future. It is so important to understand that this crisis impacts all of us, and we all have a valuable role to play in a deeply interconnected system.

OCAL BUSINESSES ARE the

backbone of our community. They are run by our neighbors and our friends, create local jobs that employ even more of our friends and neighbors, and dollars spent at these businesses are more likely to stay in our community. Approximately 87% of Sonoma County businesses are small, family-owned operations and the majority of our local workforce have a job at a small business. As of January of this year, our small businesses and local entrepreneurs have a new ally for their success. A new Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has come to Sonoma County, opening its office in the heart of downtown Santa Rosa. The Sonoma SBDC, hosted by the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber, provides one-on-one counseling and training to support local entrepreneurs with the tools and insights to start, grow, and pivot their businesses, all at no cost for the business owner. “There’s tremendous synergy between our organization and the Small Business Development Center,” says Santa Rosa Metro Chamber CEO, Peter Rumble. “The Chamber hosting the Sonoma SBDC is a natural fit given that supporting startup and established small businesses to bolster the economic health and growth

The Sonoma SBDC aims to provide local entrepreneurs with the solutions they seek and the confidence they need to realize their dreams. The program’s individualized business advising and technical assistance helps small businesses in a number of ways. Accessing capital is a critical step for many new ventures as well as those looking to expand. The SBDC’s Finance Center helps entrepreneurs understand their best options to secure the right type of capital in line with their business goals—whether they’re starting their very first venture or if it’s time to take their business into the next phase of growth. One-on-one consulting from expert business advisors cover a multitude of topics with a personalized approach. From initial planning and startup to marketing, management and growth, these sessions help entrepreneurs chart and navigate a path that leads to success. All of these services are offered at no-cost by a team of local advisors experienced in helping others launch successful startups and grow existing businesses. “We’re looking forward to providing top industry experts to support Sonoma clients who are looking to open a business, as well as those who are in business and

Highlighting the importance of these efforts, Chamber CEO Peter Rumble says, “The Small Business Development Center is a critical program, working in partnership with the Chamber’s existing network of services, information and advocacy, to increase the economic vitality of the region and expand economic opportunity for all in Sonoma County.”

CHEF GRAY ROLLIN BELLY Left Coast Kitchen and Taproom BY CHRIS VOMVOLAKIS

W

HAT DO LUKE BRYAN,

Michael Bublé, Mötley Crüe, Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, Blink 182, Tori Amos, Dave Matthews and Linkin Park all have in common? They tapped Chef Gray Rollin, owner of BELLY Left Coast Kitchen and Taproom, as their personal executive touring chef—a gig that’s taken him to more countries than the average person could even name. Yet even before his life on tour, Gray’s career trajectory has taken him far and wide from his northern California roots. After graduating from San Francisco’s California Culinary Academy with an A.O.S. degree in Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts, Chef Gray became Sous Chef at I’O Restaurant in Lahaina, Maui, where he was mentored by Chef James McDonald and learned the art of Pacific-fusion cooking. After three years in Maui, Chef Gray moved to Washington D.C. to open Nage, an “East Coast” style eatery. There he created seasonal menus often with a strong Pacific-fusion influence. The reviews in D.C. were remarkable, including “The chef from Hawaii is magical” and The Washington Post said, “Get into the swim before the swells do.” And The Georgetowner called his food “Shamefully delicious, edible concoctions.” A good thing about Chef Gray’s cooking is his dedication to spicy heat and rich flavors. High quality ingredients carry lots of flavor, his cooking methods intensify them, and he uses a lot of sriracha sauce. Chef Gray also attended the Chaing Mai Thai Cookery School in Thailand. He is the winner of five local iron chef competitions, including two at the California Culinary Academy and two at the Maui Iron Chef competition. His food has been featured on the cover of Maui’s Menu magazine and he participated in a nine-episode TV show in Hawaii.

14

He has volunteered with the D.C. Food Fight Fundraiser in D.C. and with Loaves and Fishes in Richmond, CA. Chef Gray Rollin was also a contestant on the Food Network’s highly rated program, Chopped. Gray’s last tour with Linkin Park included concert stops at over 40 countries including Asia, Europe, South America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. Between tours, when he’s not cooking for A-list rock and roll headliners, the Bay Area native always looks forward to returning his Northern California roots. Chef Gray’s dream was to own and operate his own restaurant where he could showcase a hearty menu of locally inspired comfort foods from throughout the Pacific. That dream was realized when BELLY Left Coast Kitchen and Taproom opened in downtown Santa Rosa in the spring of 2013. BELLY has been described as West Coast-influenced new American eats featuring wine and craft brews served in

rustic-cool digs with a bar and patio. By including “Left Coast” in the name of his restaurant, Chef Gray emphasizes his dedication of focusing the menu towards the five Pacific states: Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. He utilizes seasonal products to continually rotate specials in addition to enhancing some of his popular regular staples. He sources his product from local Sonoma County purveyors, and additional from sources all along the West Coast. Funny and engaging, an expert in the kitchen with great culinary stories to tell, and an affable on-camera presence, Chef Gray Rollin is man behind the business at BELLY Left Coast Kitchen and Taproom.

MERCEDES HERNANDEZ Holee Vintage | the SOCO Market | Bow N Arrow Clothing BY CADANCE HINKLE ALLINSON

I

N 2011, MERCEDES HERNANDEZ

was 15 and had her first retail job in Santa Rosa Plaza. Just three years later, as a full-time college student, she opened an online shop, selling, packing and distributing clothes out of a closet in her house. Two years after that—after finishing her business entrepreneurship course at Santa Rosa Junior College, making helpful connections through the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and saving enough money for start-up costs— Mercedes opened her first brick and mortar shop. Bow N Arrow Clothing, located in Downtown Cotati, has been a staple on the Sonoma County fashion scene for over five years now. Mercedes always knew Bow N Arrow was just her first step. The changes that happened during the pandemic allowed her to take the next one. “There was so much down time during the pandemic where people were able to start businesses of their own,” she says. “It was wonderful to see all these new businesses getting started by millennials focusing on their dreams. I always had a desire to help others my age start businesses of their own and give them the support and encouragement they need to get started.” But Mercedes had more than support and encouragement to offer. She had a platform and a physical space (the parking lot behind her building) to help these businesses grow. She launched the Small Business Market with 11 local businesses, all of whom Mercedes knew personally, in September of 2020. The second market saw 20 vendors and when the third market happened (rebranded as the SOCO Market) it had reached 30 vendors and maxed out the space. The next market in Plaza Park saw the number double and again max out the space.

When the Downtown District invited Mercedes to bring SOCO Market to Courthouse Square, she was “excited but intimidated because it was such a big space to fill.” With vendors now coming all the way from the East Bay, she had too many applicants and easily filled the space with 80 vendors.

and sells items from over 50 small, local businesses.

“It was the craziest market we had, but it was amazing watching it come together and seeing the huge community response. Everyone was yearning for this type of activity.”

“I always knew I wanted to open something in Santa Rosa,” says Mercedes. “I love the shopping here, eating at the restaurants and the environment that’s been created. I feel like in a way, Santa Rosa is just getting started. With all the events and new businesses, we’re just starting to tap the surface of what we’re growing into as a community.”

SOCO Market had three markets in Downtown Santa Rosa during the summer of 2021 and made an immediate impact on other Downtown businesses. “Our best nights of the summer were when SOCO Market was in town,” said Caitlin Kurasek, co-owner of La Rosa. For Mercedes, who thrives off the success of others, watching the other small businesses grow has been the best part. Most of the small businesses she worked with were looking for more ways to grow their business. So she created Holee Vintage, a large retail space at 529 Fourth Street, which opened in October 2021

Combining her passions for vintage clothes, fashion and supporting other young business owners are not the only things that drove her to this place. Mercedes strategically researched both her demographic and the area.

LANIAKEA EVANS 365 Recreational Cannabis BY MICHELLE PERRY, TJ LINHARDT JR, AND JEN VERTZ

O

VER 15 YEARS AGO, LANIAKEA EVANS began her

foray into the cannabis arena by becoming a trimmer in the legacy market. What started as a way to make ends meet became something so much more profound. For her, the industry has always been a part of her ’Ohana (Hawaiian for family), and one that grows with each new venture. With her inclusive mindset, this dedicated, hardworking young mother flourished. As a powerful self-starter, she’s grown within the industry and gone on to manage farms, distribution facilities and dispensaries throughout Northern California.

After managing a successful Sebastopol dispensary, then opening another in Santa Rosa, she was ready for her next big adventure. She took on the challenge of opening 365 Recreational Cannabis in April of 2020, at the height of the pandemic. “It was an absolute whirlwind in the beginning,” she says. “We were trying to navigate opening a brand-new dispensary during a pandemic, keep our staff and community safe, follow the proclamations of the Governor and the Bureau of Cannabis Control’s new curbside rules all while following CDC guidelines...it was a lot at once and the rules were changing almost daily. BEHIND THE BUSINESS

MO BERNAL Anchor Rose Tattoo | Avenue Tattoo BY KEVIN STOLL

passion for Mo Bernal, owner of and artist at Anchor Rose and Avenue Tattoo. “Since I was a little kid, I’ve always enjoyed drawing,” he explains. “Then growing up back in the ‘80s, I was a punk rock kid and started doing homemade tattoos. We had homemade tattoo equipment and we tattooed each other a lot.” As time went by and the body art given and received increased, his desire to do tattoos for a living increased too. To hone his skills, Mo enrolled in art classes at Santa Rosa Junior College. With guidance from established tattoo artists he befriended, and the acquisition of professional equipment, he quickly landed an apprenticeship in a local shop, building his portfolio and growing a list of clients. Back in the late ‘90s, there were only four tattoo shops in Sonoma County. Mo sensed an opportunity. With a strong desire to improve his economic situation and putting to use lessons he learned growing up in a family that ran a small business, Mo opened the first of his two shops. “I grew up in inner city central Phoenix—in really humble surroundings—and have always been a go-getter and a self-starter,” says Mo. “The hustle gene is very strong in my family, and I enjoy creating. Starting up my own studio was just the next logical step.” As time progressed, so did his success and connection to the community. “I really enjoy being part of something bigger than just my own tattooing, especially now as a mentor to the next generation,” says Mo. “I’m very inspired by the younger generation and people from all different backgrounds—Latinos, like myself, as well as all other cultures, the LGBT community and women in the industry. ceiling, it’s open for everyone, and your talent and your drive is what will make you progress.” That enthusiasm for inclusion and to be part of something bigger extends beyond just his industry. It can be seen through his volunteering for Food Not Bombs, contributing art for local school projects like Odyssey of the Mind and various fundraising events. It was also the motivation to help those in our community that had been affected by wildfires in recent years. “Our community was going through a lot,” he explains, “and I really wanted to give back to the community that has given so much to me.” Mobilizing tattoo artists from both of his shops, they drew up flash sheets of designs and launched the Roses for Rosa event where 100% of the proceeds from the $100 tattoos would be donated to fire victims. A marathon shift from 10AM to midnight raised over $14,000. When wildfires struck again the next year, another $14,000 was raised through a

repeat event. “It just made sense to try to help give back,” says Mo. “I’ve had a lot of success in Sonoma County, and I’ve loved Sonoma County since the day I moved here. Here I found a welcoming and supportive community, and it still warms my heart to think about it.” It’s a sentiment and a point of pride that’s mirrored in the way he runs his business too. “I’m very proud of the fact that my shops are the most diverse in Sonoma County. We’ve had people of every cultural background and identity in our shops. The one thing I have always liked about our vibrant industry is it’s accepting of everyone—all are welcome.”

W

HILE 2021 WAS BY no means “normal” with

Sonoma County remaining under lockdown through June, Downtown Santa Rosa proved to be an excellent canvas for testing new ideas and bringing the community safely together. Early in the year, with the goal of supporting small business recovery and survival through the pandemic, business owners and volunteers came together to strategize on how to safely bring locals back Downtown. A year of unique hybrid programming that focused on the current health regulations and the mood in the community took shape. It started with an Easter Egg Hunt. Bayside Church, a group that first got involved supporting Downtown businesses in 2020 when they built over 15 free parklets to help Downtown restaurants operate outdoors, came up with the idea to create passports sending community members to more than 30 businesses throughout Downtown with the chance to win big prizes including a big screen TV and an Xbox. Hundreds of families stopped into each store to complete their passport and enter to win. While the county was still masking and not yet fully open, this event on the cusp of the return to normalcy was a huge boost for Downtown businesses. Bernie Schwartz, owner of California Luggage which has been Downtown for over 40 years had people come into his store that had never been there before. Schwartz remembered, “One of the Egg Hunt participants, a thirty-something guy, even said, ‘I had no idea that there was such a thing as a luggage store!’ and you just can’t buy that kind of awareness and publicity through advertising. We reached a whole new audience through participating in the Egg Hunt.” In the spring, with several unknowns on the horizon, business owners resurrected the Open & Out program and began raising money to host ambiance enhancing activities that would encourage people to come Downtown by creating an ongoing festive atmosphere. The block of Fourth Street that remained closed to vehicular traffic had summer lighting installed in the trees and an interactive hopscotch painted on the street. Acoustic musicians were scheduled three days a week to entertain shoppers and diners and cultural performances were scheduled in the Square.

Mercedes Hernandez who has since opened a brick and mortar location, Holee Vintage clothing at 529 Fourth Street. SOCO Market hosted three events during the summer with over 80 local small business owners, entrepreneurs and makers. Courthouse Square proved to be an excellent venue for Pop Tha Trunk Art Show as well. Show founder Justin Hollingsworth wanted to figure out ways to help local artists expose their work to the community. “It was a dream come true to bring our artists to Courthouse Square and host our event in the heart of Downtown,” he said. After the first show, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber connected Pop Tha Trunk to 365 Recreational Cannabis who became a sponsor of the event, assisting with advertising and securing additional vendors, allowing the event to grow even more. Thousands of community members came out to support the local makers and artists. Every weekend from Labor Day to Memorial Day had some type of programming Downtown, all geared toward getting people shopping, dining and seeing what Downtown Santa Rosa has to offer—and that energy carried into the fall. Given the community’s continued desire to come together, the increasing vaccination rates and the safety of outdoor gatherings, plans moved forward with Fall Fun Fest—a massively enhanced Downtown Trick or Treating experience supported by Bayside Church. Games, inflatables, food and a costume contest coordinated by Third Street Aleworks led to thousands of people coming Downtown. Trick or treaters roved throughout Downtown and enjoyed festivities in Courthouse Square, which had a massive LED screen to show off the fun costumes, dance parties and more. The night ended with a screening of Hocus Pocus. Downtown business owners again got the chance to connect with community members who came through for trick or treating. “We ran out

Once county health officials announced that outdoor events would be permitted and Poppy Bank stepped up as a presenting sponsor, it was full steam ahead. Said the bank’s CEO & President Khalid Acheckzai, “Poppy Bank was happy to support Open & Out as Santa Rosa is made up of mostly small and locally-owned businesses. Through the pandemic, these are the businesses who were hit the hardest and we will continue to do all we can to support them and preserve the culture that makes this community so special.” A Downtown Showdown Bartenders Challenge, End of Summer Block Party, Family Movie Series sponsored by Sonoma Clean Power, and other events added to the festive atmosphere. The Downtown District also took over some programming in Courthouse Square, reaching out to several local markets to see if they would like to host activities on the Square throughout the summer. One of those was SOCO Market, organized by

of candy,” said Julie Montgomery of Kindred Fair Trade. “We bought 750 pieces of candy and we ran out before the event was over. It was fantastic to get so many people into the store.”

installed and holiday music played during each skate session. Redwood Theatre Company, a local ice dancing theatre connected to Snoopy’s Home Ice, performed on the rink three different times and Sonoma County Pride used it for a Drag on Ice show. The rink also served as the centerpiece of the annual tree lighting event on the day of after Thanksgiving, an evening sorely missed by the community in 2020. Thousands of families attended, lining up to meet Santa and watching as Redwood Theatre Company and Snoopy skated together, leading the community into a countdown to light the tree in Courthouse Square.

A live video feed on the massive LED screen helped kids show off their costumes during the Fall Fun Fest.

Throughout the season, Courthouse Square was able to welcome first-time events, like the North Bay Indo-American Association’s Diwali Celebration, as well as community events that hadn’t taken place since the pandemic began, like the Santa Rosa Dia de los Muertos event. The ability to provide safe space for distancing as well as no outdoor mask requirements allowed for greater ease of planning for event organizers. These events and the activation throughout the year provided a clear message: Sonoma County residents want to come together again. Seeing this, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber decided to initiate plans that had been discussed for many years and bring a skating rink to Old Courthouse Square. Rather than use hundreds of thousands of gallons of water during a drought, the Chamber rented an environmentally-friendly synthetic skating rink. The business community came together to raise over $100,000 to make the rink a reality, and eight different nonprofit organizations, such as Sonoma County Pride, Chops Teen Club, and the Rotary Club, stepped up to run the rink from November 19 through January 9. The proceeds from ticket sales went to these non-profits, totaling over $30,000.

These events have been instrumental in helping Santa Rosans view Downtown as the heart of the community and support the small business owners that have kept their doors open as well as meet those who opened their doors for the first time during the past two years. While a handful of businesses ended up closing early on during the pandemic, thankfully the majority have managed to stay open. Those that remained have shifted business models and adapted along with the rest of the world. They’ve taken the opportunity to remodel, change menus, alter their hours and update protocols. Many have had to make additional shifts in response to the staffing shortage, but they’re still managing to meet the needs of the community. It’s been a huge test for many, but the small business owners Downtown are certainly up to the challenge. Third Street Aleworks made critical changes to their business model and their space. They remodeled the inside of the restaurant to allow for better social distancing inside. Fewer staff wanted to come back to work once they were able, so they cut down their menu to make both cooking and serving easier for those returning. In doing so, they turned to more local distributors.

“All of us at Redwood Credit Union are committed to lifting people up and bringing joy and hope to our community, especially in challenging times—this is just one of the many values we share with the Chamber,” said Brett Martinez, RCU President & CEO. “We’re honored to sponsor the Winter Lights celebration, which brings the community together in a safe way while also supporting our local businesses who have faced so many struggles during the pandemic. But seeing the skaters out there with such big smiles just illustrates how resilient and supportive our community is—and it truly reflects the magic of the season!” Volunteers from Third Street Aleworks and Bayside Church assembled the rink alongside Chamber staff. Bayside Church erected a snack shack to sell warm drinks, festive lighting was

“We wanted to keep the money local,” said Matt Vella, who took over Third Street in the spring of 2019 with his business partners. “Our menu is now sourced from solely local distributors and almost entirely from local farmers and ranchers. Even if the options were reduced, we wanted to make sure the quality was exceptional, and working with local partners really allows us to deliver on that.” They also made more of an effort to get into the wholesale market, expanding into the Greater Sacramento market and adding salespeople to help increase distribution. Despite the pandemic, many new business owners opened their doors in Downtown Santa Rosa over the past year, including Botany Zhi, a stunning indoor plant jungle located on D Street run by the incredibly friendly Lewis Deng, lover and grower of all things green. Multiple new restaurants opened this year as well, all from restauranteurs with other established restaurants in the Bay Area. On Fourth Street’s 500 Block, Sushi Rosa (an eatery where robots serve your sushi) and Warike Restobar opened, the 700 Block welcomed both Falafel Hut and Mi Pueblo, and Fifth Street saw Mi Ranchito Restaurant open its second Sonoma County location. One of the other interesting shifts in Downtown life over the course of 2021 was a change in parking behavior. Longtime residents of Santa Rosa can frequently be heard to bemoan the “lack of parking” Downtown, while many new residents see Santa Rosa as a city with

plenty of inexpensive parking options— they love the ease and safety of garage parking or utilizing the City’s Passport parking app for street parking. In response to the pandemic and the need to support businesses by making it easier for shoppers and diners to come Downtown, the City incentivized garage parking by making it free on the weekends, free after 5 p.m. and free for the first hour. That temporary change has led to an increase in garage use by 2%. Beautification efforts also took place in 2021 with over thirty new trees planted, replacing the dead and diseased ones planted many decades ago. The combination of crape myrtles and gingko trees will provide new color in both fall and spring. 2022 will see the long-awaited reinstallation of the Asawa Fountain with the panels cast in bronze and the installation of Blessing Hancock’s piece Unum on the Square. Inspired by the unified Old Courthouse Square, the sculpture embraces themes of welcoming and inspiration, while also relaying the Santa Rosa values of innovation and cultural inclusivity through its text which was collected through a community engagement process that speaks values inherent to Santa Rosa. These pieces will not just bring public art to the Square but allow Downtown Santa Rosa to showcase its important history while focusing on the future. One that will undoubtedly include an active, engaging and flourishing heart of the community.

The State of Hospitality in Santa Rosa BY CHRIS VOMVOLAKIS

S

INCE THE LATE 1990’S SANTA ROSA has continued

to grow as a premier travel destination driven by the allure of award-winning wines, world-class craft beer, unmatched outdoor recreation and athletic competitions, and farm to table cuisine. The common thread that weaves its way through these experiences is Santa Rosa’s stellar reputation for hospitality. Hospitality—the cornerstone of the tourism industry in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County—can be defined as, “The friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers in which the host receives the guests with goodwill.” Hospitality in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County is part of a multibillion–dollar industry that is completely dependent on the availability of leisure time, disposable income, and

26

SANTA ROSA METRO CHAMBER

customer satisfaction. The hospitality “supersector” consist of four segments: travel and tourism; food and beverages; lodging and accommodations; and arts, entertainment, and recreation. While many business niches are composed of a handful of different organizations, the hospitality industry applies to nearly any business that provides customer service and is focused on meeting leisurely needs rather than basic ones. The Impact of COVID-19 on the Hospitality Industry As an industry reliant mainly on travel and tourism, the restrictions on travel and ongoing concerns individuals have from COVID-19 variants have placed profound strain on the hospitality sector, centered mainly on the impact on jobs and employment countywide.

In the fall of 2021, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the number of hospitality job openings is expanding. While that may sound good for individuals, it is a concerning trend for the economy, indicating an increasingly difficult labor market that was already placing pressure on hospitality and tourism businesses. The agency’s recent Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), analyzing data from October 2021, showed that there were 11.03 million job openings in the United States—exceeding the number of people actively searching for work by 3.6 million. The JOLTS report is closely watched at the Federal Reserve and elsewhere for signs of labor market tightness. The pandemic has caused a surge in employee departures, exceeding what were once historic levels. Even with October’s decline, the level is still 24% above where it was during the same period in 2020. Economists generally see the exodus as a result of greater opportunity in the pandemic-era jobs market spurred by many workers still reluctant to come off the sidelines either because of child-care issues or health concerns. Percy Brandon, general manager of Vintners Resort, has nearly 100 openings for a variety of lodging and food service jobs at the luxury Santa Rosa-area property. Will Seppi, owner of Costeaux French Bakery in Healdsburg, is looking for up to 15 more workers to essentially double the staff so the restaurant can open seven days a week instead of only five. These hospitality operators are emblematic of the vexing challenge facing many Sonoma County restaurants, hotels, wineries, breweries, and cafes: securing enough qualified workers to efficiently and effectively run their businesses. With over 80% of county residents 5 or older fully vaccinated

their ability to resume normal daily operating hours. What’s more, greater competition for new hires has forced hospitality establishments to pay higher wages even though there has been an extremely sharp decline in revenue in this sector. With more hospitality businesses trying to ramp up, “It’s become a rat race among all of us to bring more people on board,” Brandon said, noting that “never in my career have I seen this,” as he strives to double his 100-person payroll to fully reopen all the property’s amenities. Encouraging signs In 2021, state legislators allocated $95 million for Visit California to launch a marketing and advertising program called “Calling all Californians.” The initial goal is to encourage travel within the state where visitors spent $145 billion in 2019. Tourism spending cratered in the pandemic, dropping by $79 billion last year when 1.2 million of the state’s hospitality workers lost their jobs. California State Senator Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg) says legislators are discussing spending $1.5 billion in the current budget to add a third round of small business grants of up to $25,000 apiece that struggling enterprises, including in the hospitality sector, could use to boost payrolls among other things. McGuire, a key player in securing Governor Gavin Newsom’s support for the tourism stimulus, expressed confidence Calling all Californians would “stir significant economic activity across California.” He and other state officials believe it will lead to tens of billions of dollars in visitor spending and additional state and local tax revenues. Peter Rumble, CEO of the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber, agreed, saying Sonoma County needs “some of that cash to kick-start the travel and hospitality sector.” The local hospitality industry has been slowly adding jobs as the community has gradually reopened, although the workforce remains 30% smaller than it was the spring before the pandemic—when the county’s economy was vibrant and growing. There are currently 6,200 more people on local hospitality payrolls than in April 2020—when the public health crisis propelled the Sonoma County unemployment rate to an 80-year high of 15.4%. In that single month after the onset of the pandemic, 48,000 local residents were laid off, including 14,400 who worked in hospitality jobs, according to state employment data.

and the threat of the COVID-19 virus finally fading after a painful two years, Santa Rosa and Sonoma County companies have slowly been able to expand operations. However, many area restaurants, wineries, breweries, and hotels continue to be constrained by staffing shortages. It limits

At Vintners Resort, similar to all venues, employees are working long hours and filling multiple roles. Still, parts of the property—the River Vine restaurant, the spa, events center, and catering business—are either closed or operating on a limited basis due to the labor shortage. “The burnout rate is increasing,” said Brandon, the general manager. “Our employees are tired.” The hotel is fully open thanks to the staff ’s hustle, and the acclaimed John Ash & Co. restaurant, known for its Wine Country cuisine, is operating daily except Monday and Tuesday. In 2020 and 2021, the popularity of staycations, hygiene protocols and contactless technologies—all now firmly embedded in the daily activities of hospitality businesses—has risen sharply, and we are seeing some new trends emerge locally. Today—Hospitality 2.0 The Chamber conducted a survey of local hospitality professionals for the purpose of unearthing the direction the industry is heading in. Overall, these professionals overwhelmingly indicated the need for the service and hospitality industry to embrace the following trends and understand what’s at stake. Six findings came out from this survey: 1. Standardization can no longer be the norm: It is becoming critical to personalize and tailor the services to the needs and preferences of travelers.

Going places Hotels and markets that rely on the hospitality supersector are still likely a year or more away from a meaningful recovery. Business travel is expected to improve in 2022, but won’t solve the problem. There will certainly be some travel restrictions companies institute voluntarily, and companies holding onto cash will likely make cuts to travel budgets. The simple availability of group and convention business will be governed by meeting restrictions imposed by state and county health officials. The bedrock of Sonoma County’s hospitality supersector, leisure travel, is coming back—but slowly, similar to business travel. Direct visitor spending in Sonoma County totaled $1.1 billion in 2020, down from $2 billion the previous year. Despite the decline, Sonoma County remained just behind Monterey ($1.5 billion) and ahead of Napa ($0.8 billion) and El Dorado ($0.7 billion) Counties. Sonoma County’s Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) receipts totaled nearly $36 million in 2020—a decrease of 26.3% from 2019, a year that recorded the highest level of TOT receipts Sonoma County has ever collected. Despite the slowness of recovery, there is optimism in the industry. “As travelers begin to embrace a return to something resembling ‘normal,’ it seems that the Delta variant has had only a nominal impact on the willingness to travel,” said Charlene Lennon, Director of Sales for Visit Santa Rosa. “We believe we are past serious virus-related barriers in destination travel, although the emergence of Omicron will have a small short-term effect. We expect travelers to hit the roads and skies with continued passion and positivity in 2022.” Lennon went on to say that “based on the consumer sentiment trends we’re seeing, travelers are increasingly accepting health risks as manageable due in part to rising vaccination rates.” She predicts that 2022 will be characterized by growth in vacation length-of-stay metrics, travel farther from home (versus the past two years) and a higher proportion of “major vacations” as well as more frequent local drive market getaways. Without question, the pandemic has had a profound impact on the tourism industry—and will likely have lasting implications. 28

2. To create value, focus on niche markets: More customization and specialization may enable increased value creation for hospitality organizations. But be careful, as one respondent said—this requires a genuine modification of the value proposition, not “simply branding and rebranding.” 3. Exploit technology as an accelerator for business: Technology will be at the core of the hospitality experience, both before and after a visit to Santa Rosa. This will lead to the development of new concepts and more innovation in the industry and contribute to the emergence of an ever more individualized offer. 4. Social responsibility is a moral and economic obligation: The impact of global warming is a major risk for both hospitality businesses, which may lose revenues and profits, and society as a whole. It is critical for governments, but even more so for organizations, to become more sustainable: “not just green, but real sustainable business models.” People are becoming increasingly sensitive to environmental and social issues. A respondent noted that this “has to be considered in branding, but beware of green-washers; consumers are now well-aware that window-dressing exists and they will not buy it.” 5. Develop more responsive and resilient business models: One respondent said, “Tourism, despite the slow return of visitors, will become riskier and more prone to crises” as the number of travelers steadily continues to grow and confidence returns. This will be accompanied by increased regulation as smaller communities (e.g., Guerneville or the City of Sonoma) perceive pressure from the number of tourists returning. Lockdowns, upturned work, and strained childcare schedules have afforded food delivery services new importance this year. No longer content with only ordering the usual go-to pizza, Thai or Indian takeaway, Santa Rosans have taken things up a notch. Not wanting to forego the frills of fine dining, they are now looking to emulate the dining-out experience at home. Santa Rosa food and beverage outlets have made this possible by incorporating drinks deliveries and offering extras: atmospheric candles, QR-code playlists, and unexpected freebies. Meanwhile,

hotels have played their part in supporting local first responder needs and turning hotel rooms into alternative workspaces for those tired of working from home. 6. Manage talents actively: The days of long-lasting employee retention as well as passive, hierarchical management styles are definitely gone. “Attracting, developing and keeping the right talent into and within the hospitality industry remains a core challenge.” Tomorrow—Hospitality 3.0? While the consensus revolves around the need for the Santa Rosa and Sonoma County hospitality industry to evolve in order to better adapt to the current environment, some respondents were more extreme and suggested that hotel rooms as we know them today “will become a thing of the past.” These survey respondents refer to the impact of the sharing economy and the tendency of today’s customers to avoid traditional hotels. They believe that adjustments are not sufficient, and that the hospitality industry must reinvent itself.

Complimentary Breakfast

Bottle of Wine Upon Arrival

Bay, Pool, Garden or Pasture Views

In-Room Massage Services

Pool, Sauna, Whirlpool and Fitness Center

This standpoint is reinforced by the increasing importance of technology in the hospitality industry and the power that technology firms are acquiring. A respondent elaborated: “Major technology firms will replace most hotel brands because they can offer technology solutions and create markets to attract customers. The traditional hospitality industry will evolve into niche markets serving specific types of customers or luxury sector so they can afford to pay their staff a higher salary. Some corporate brands may survive, but their business will get tougher.” While some respondents see more change than others coming for the hospitality industry, all agree that the sector must evolve and reinvent itself to take advantage of the opportunities and cope with the challenges it faces if they wish to remain competitive in an already challenging business landscape. The only question remaining is how quickly that transformation will happen.

construction of Mitote Food Park, a 7.5acre County-owned parcel and permanent outdoor home for specialty food trucks and a gathering place for Latinx culture.

Mitote (Pronounced, Me-toe-tay): From the ancient Nahuatl language meaning a party or gathering.

Over the last year or so, the food truck park has been a gathering spot in the heart of Roseland for several food trucks, including Charro Negro, Lucha Sabina, Gio y Los Magos, La Victoria and Maria Machetes. The busy Sebastopol Road location in front of the former Dollar Tree store, now Mercadito Roseland, has become a destination for those seeking some of the best birria, tacos, tamales, aguachiles and tlayuda around. with colorful tablecloths serve as the communal dining area, allowing eaters to sample different trucks. In the ancient Nahuatl language, the word Mitotl frames a series of ceremonies where pre-Columbian Mexicas gathered to celebrate heritage and culture through regional cuisines, music and the arts. Mitote Food Park refers exactly to that. “Mitote is sharing best ideas, creating best ideas,” said Octavio Diaz, a restaurant-owner who oversees the food truck operation and future park. According to Diaz, local food trucks from all over the North Bay will soon have a space to offer taste experiences from all over Mexico: Oaxaca, Jalisco, Michoacan, Yucatan, and Mexico City. Visitors will also be surprised to find cuisine from other corners of the world with Asian, African, European and South American food joining the food truck line up. “It’s going to change Roseland in a good way, and make it an even happier place,” said Rodrigo Mendoza, owner of the Charro Negro food truck. Mitote is part of the much larger Roseland Village project, Tierra de Rosas, which has been in the works since 2005 as a neighborhood improvement concept put together by the Sebastopol Road Urban Vision Plan, the Sonoma County Community Development Commission, and the nonprofit MidPen Housing of Foster City (San Mateo County). Plans for the Tierra de Rosas development include 75 affordable rental apartments, 100 market-rate rental apartments, a civic building, a one-acre public plaza, a public library and a Mercado food hall. For the food truck operators at the 7,000-square foot Mitote Food Park, the experience will be much more than a transition from plates and silverware to compostable take-out boxes. The highend trucks—each mobile kitchen can cost $100,000 to $200,000, Diaz said—cater to locals and visitors from across Sonoma County who are eager to try such Charro Negro highlights as the layered aguachile

of raw shrimp marinated in lime and chile then mixed with mango, cilantro, jicama, pickled onions, avocados and cucumbers, all piled in a tall plastic cup rimmed with hibiscus and mole salt. Mitote is serving up authentic delicacies long enjoyed by families at the dinner table and celebrations. Birria tacos from the Los Magos truck have shredded beef laced with onion tucked into corn tortillas, then deep-fried and served with spicy pickled carrot, radish, jalapeno, lime and hot sauce. Guests sit at widely spaced folding tables under a large white tent and savor fruit aguas frescas while enjoying mariachi music strumming from speakers. One truck, Antojitos Victoria, offers familiar fare like nachos, but also serves up quesadillas stuffed with interesting ingredients like nopales (cactus), chicharron salsa verde or chicken mole verde. The bundles are lightly fried for delicious crunch. Speaking about Mitote Food Park, current Santa Rosa City Council member Eddie Alvarez said, “What’s going to happen tomorrow, what lays ahead of us? It gives me hope, it makes me excited.” Food truck owner, Neil Pacheco, a second-generation Latino entrepreneur, smiles as he unrolls a banana leaf on one of the specialty tamales he sells at his Tamales Oaxaqueños stand at Mitote Food Park. Pacheco and his business partner have a kitchen where a five-person crew makes fresh tamales around the clock, about 2,500 a day. Area farmers and construction workers stop by his stand from 5 a.m. to noon for a tamale, usually for breakfast. Marlene Orozco, lead research analyst with the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative, said Latinos are twice as likely as other ethnic groups to become business owners, no matter if their families had operated businesses or not. An economic sociologist contracted to work on entrepreneurship research for local Santa Rosa Latino leadership group Los Cien, Orozco said the U.S. growth of Latino-owned companies is a two-decade trend that coincides with population increases. Indeed, the county’s Latino population grew 17.4%, from 120,430

residents in 2010 to 141,438 in 2020 according to new U.S. census data released in August. Latinos now make up nearly 29% of Sonoma County residents, up from a decade ago when their share was just under 25%. White residents comprise slightly less than 59% of the total local population of 488,863 people. That’s a sharp decline from 66% 10 years ago. Although the county’s population growth slowed considerably to a scant 1% in the past decade, clearly Latinos continue to relocate in Santa Rosa. As a result, Latinos’ latest estimated local aggregate annual household income was $2.3 billion in 2019, representing strong consumer buying power that’s growing, according to Orozco’s research. While Diaz is also looking forward to Mitote’s development and “steady rhythm,” he’s grateful for how the city, county and vendors have all worked together to make the nascent project a reality. “Our chefs are so happy here in these hard times, and to me, that’s more valuable than money,” he said. “I’m thrilled that they’re feeling the enthusiasm, that they took the gamble and are doing OK. It’s been challenging, but there’s no room for not thinking positive.” Mitote food park represents a long journey—from rural and urban kitchens in Mexico to community-centered projects such as murals, performances, artisanal crafts and open-air markets. Despite the challenges, including some local resistance to the annexation of the land to the City of Santa Rosa, the vision of Mitote Food Park is becoming a reality.

PUTTING THE FUN BACK IN LEARNING AT THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF SONOMA COUNTY BY CHRIS VOMVOLAKIS

S

INCE OPENING ITS DOORS

in 2012, the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County (CMOSC) has become Santa Rosa’s premier destination for learning through direct experience play, welcoming over 150,000 parents, caregivers, educators and families each year. Through their interactive exhibits and engaging educational programs, CMOSC has been dedicated to inspiring young minds to learn about the world around them, stimulate creativity and curiosity, and to discover the world through playful exploration of the arts

and sciences. CMOSC is a place where children can do the serious work of learning through play. A person who holds a place in many of our childhood and parenting memories, Fred Rogers said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” CEO and Founder Collette Michaud agrees and emphasizes that CMOSC is the perfect place for children to learn through play. She is a huge believer in out-of-school experiences that involve play and their ability to shape us—that we all have the inherent and biological need to play to be fulfilled and happy. Under Michaud’s leadership CMOSC is brimming with one-of-a-kind educational experiences that are truly unlike any other. From painting with shaving cream and jamming on a drum set made of recyclable materials to playing inside a real helicopter, CMOSC promises that

kiddos will leave with tons of memories and a little extra knowledge. Her proudest moment was when CMOSC secured a 1.8 million dollar grant from the State of California to build an outdoor nature space on an acre of land at the Children’s Museum. The grant gave them the confidence to move forward on construction even though CMOSC was not a fully operating museum at the time. Michaud proudly recounts creating “Mary’s Garden” way ahead of schedule, and in 2016, it was named “Best place in the world for children that is not a playground” by Landscape Architecture online. To local and visiting families alike this outdoor play area is the big draw. An expansive playground with a butterfly theme (“Mary” is short for mariposa, the Spanish word for butterfly), roughly half of the area revolves around a replica of the Russian River, a self-filtering water feature that trickles into a pond with living plants and flowers.

On one side of this river, there’s a selfdraining gravel pit where kids can play with rocks and use gutters and other toys to manipulate water bubbling up from fountains. On the other side, a series of hands-on water-play tables give kids the chance to use hand pumps, tubing, and other toys to learn about gravity and physics. The river is populated with sardine-size plastic fish, which kids are encouraged to extract with nets or bare hands or both. It serves as an interactive, aquatic ecosystem that provides outdoor fun and playful exploration. The goal of this waterfall and stream

Within Mary’s Garden, a citation notes, children “can be involved in the plantgrowing process by planting, feeding and watering vegetation. They can fish, run and learn from nature.” Elsewhere, Mary’s features an area with giant Styrofoam blocks that kids can use to build forts and Rube Goldberg machines, and an area where children can erect teepees under the shade of a giant oak tree. There’s even an actual garden where kids can learn more about certain produce, then pick and eat it. Adjacent to Mary’s Garden is the arts studio, a reconstructed farmhouse that

large pollen balls across the gallery with wind cannons or brush a crocodile’s teeth in the dental lab. Other exhibits include a train car, light peg wall, tree house, health lab, magnet table and much more.

system is to connect children and adults to water in their environment by replicating the Russian River watershed. The water feature captures and filters rainwater while attracting local wildlife such as butterflies, dragonflies, and frogs. The entire stream is recirculated through a large wetland filtration system, showcasing the importance of native wetlands to the health of local aquatic ecosystems. “What makes Mary’s Garden special is the amount of green space and outdoor space we have,” Michaud says. “The garden area and the ‘Russian River’ is spectacular—it looks like a real miniRussian River, and the kids love that. There are also sculptural butterflies. So, we’re special in that way.”

features different themed projects every week and even includes an area where kids can paint right on the windows! One week, projects can incorporate recycled materials from across Santa Rosa and Sonoma County. The next, a project can revolve around old newspaper. Over in the Ernest L. and Ruth W. Finley Science & Imagination Gallery, kids can immerse in a world of discovery through a combination of imaginative play spaces and interactive exhibits based on scientific principles. Children can entertain their parents with a live show in the puppet theater or cook up a healthy “pretend” meal in the café. Kids will also enjoy building various structures in the hardware store or watching busy honeybees work in the live beehive, shoot

And for the little, little ones, there’s TOTopia, the toddler-only play space designed specifically for the developmental needs of children ages 30 months or younger. Crawlers and toddlers can explore a tide pool water discovery area, a sensory table, a ball wall, a storybook cottage and more. With over 7,000 square feet of interior space, coupled with 36,000 square feet of outdoor areas, there’s no shortage of exhibits and activities to explore at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County, helping it easily achieve its objective of inspiring curiosity and creativity in children through joyful, transformative experiences.

AT HOME IN SONOMA COUNTY AN UPDATE ON EXPANDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING OPTIONS BY PETER RUMBLE

Q

UALITY OF LIFE IS ONE of the biggest draws for

living in Sonoma County. In fact, U.S. News and World Report ranked the Santa Rosa metro area #8 out of the top 150 places to live for quality of life in

2021. Yet significant numbers of families struggle with housing instability and a high housing cost burden in Sonoma County. It’s not only a critical quality of life issue for the families and individuals who struggle to afford stable housing—affecting educational as well as physical and mental health outcomes—it also represents a broader challenge to our region’s economic well-being. Employers large and small seem to universally point toward housing affordability and availability as one of the most significant challenges to recruiting and keeping their workforce intact.

Local partners creating solutions for affordable, workforce and market rate housing A number of local and regional organizations are making a difference. Here are a few to watch:

Generation Housing, a housing advocacy organization, educates the public and policymakers on good pro-housing policy, and champions opportunities to increase the supply, affordability, and diversity of homes throughout Sonoma County. The Renewal Enterprise District, or RED, was formed by the County of Sonoma and City of Santa Rosa to take a regional approach to meet public policy housing goals by building not just homes but communities to support sustainable living. In pursuit of these objectives, the County and City have loaned $20 million from PG&E settlements to launch the RED Housing Fund, a new public charity providing gap financing to meritorious, shovel ready projects in transit rich areas. Burbank Housing is a local nonprofit dedicated to building quality affordable housing that puts people first. They’ve built over 3,800 affordable rental units in 78 communities, as well as building and selling over 1,000 affordable homes for first-time homebuyers, creating vibrant local communities that foster opportunities for people with limited-income of all ages, backgrounds and special needs.

While building more housing at both the affordable and market rate levels is the solution to this challenge, making that happen will take many organizations and efforts working in shared purpose. In last year’s magazine, we were thrilled to share with you a unique partnership between the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber and Housing Trust Silicon Valley to create the Sonoma County Housing Fund (SCHF) to help finance the start of affordable housing in Sonoma County. Through this partnership, the Metro Chamber leverages its business relationships and knowledge of local affordable housing development opportunities to create a local pool of funds and a pipeline of projects, while Housing Trust Silicon Valley matches local dollars raised (at a 2:1 level) and provides all the lending services and expertise in funding affordable housing developments. Kaiser Permanente provided the initial seed investment for SCHF, delivering a $1,000,000 check to the Chamber in early 2020. A year later, the Sonoma County Housing Fund is an unquestionable success. In spite of the pandemic, SCHF invested in three projects—two in Santa Rosa and one in Sonoma

Siesta Senior Apartments Milestone Housing Group, LLC, is building a 92-unit senior apartment development on 2.29 acres of land at 171 Siesta Way and Sonoma Highway, just outside of the City of Sonoma. The three-story Spanish-styled building is designed to blend into the existing neighborhood with the wings dropping to two stories as they approach nearby properties. All of the units will be one-bedroom apartments connected by interior hallways with elevators serving the upper floors. There are a number of amenities planned for the site including a clubroom, exercise stations, dog park and outdoor communal areas. For more information, visit SiestaSonoma.com.

Valley—that are creating approximately 250 affordable housing units, including a development focused on affordable senior housing. What is more, one project has already paid off its loan from the Fund, and now those proceeds will soon be re-invested in another future affordable housing project in Sonoma County. Based on this success, Kaiser Permanente stepped up again in 2022, writing a second $1,000,000 check for the Sonoma County Housing Fund to create a deeper pool of resources for developing affordable housing in our community.

Developments the Sonoma County Housing Fund has helped get off the ground Stony Point Flats Phoenix Development is building a 50-unit apartment community available exclusively to lower income households at 2268 Stony Point Road in Santa Rosa. The design of this threestory, walk-up complex includes a mix of one-, two-, and threebedroom units, and incorporates a host of indoor and outdoor amenities like a children’s play area, sport court, computer center and community room. Stony Point Flats is being designed by KTGY Architecture and Planning and will be professionally managed by FPI Management Company to ensure the long-term quality housing needs of residents and the community are met. For more information, visit StonyPointFlats.com.

ACME Family Apartments Acme Family Apartments will be a 77-unit development serving families earning up to 60% of the area median income. A two-story building at the complex’s entrance features a community space that will include a clubhouse with kitchen, tech room, and management and resident services. Following that building are four three-story walkup buildings, and around the complex are 56 surface and 74 tuck under parking spaces. There will be at least eight accessible units following Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

SWEET! TREATS!

the Best of Santa Rosa

BY KEVIN STOLL

A

ah, dessert! That little slice of heaven after a meal…or before, if you’re impatient…or anytime, if you’re feeling indulgent. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ll want to try these local favorites that have got the goods, baked or otherwise, that’ll keep you coming back for more.

TIA MARIA PANADERIA Y PASTELERIA

KONA ICE

CRUMBL COOKIES

Tia Maria Panaderia y Pasteleria For a morning fix, bypass the glazed or frosted treats and start off with a milder sweet from Tia Maria. This bright and airy bakeshop with colorful décor bakes up a variety of specialty cakes, cookies and more, but the pink, brown, or yellow seashell-shaped concha is the must-have. They’re so light and fluffy, they’re guilt-free... nearly.

NOTHING BUNDT CAKES

Owner and baker Andrea Ballus won the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” competition, and it’s easy to see why. While the menu lists a variety of French macarons, cruffles, whoopie cookies and cakes, sometimes it’s the humble—but amazing—cupcake that hits the spot. The perfect size to sate that sweet tooth craving, Sift has mastered everything from the modest chocolate cupcake to more exotic flavors like grasshopper, snickerdoodle and pink champagne, as well as offering vegan and gluten-free varieties. Noble Folk Ice Cream & Pie Bar There’s so much more to Noble Folk than just ice cream and pie—like cookies & cookie sandwiches, cupcakes and French macarons— but really, it’s the pie and ice cream we’re after. Whether it’s a fruit-forward slice like strawberry blueberry crumble or a richer flavor like maple chocolate walnut pie, going a la mode is a must with a scoop of their housemade ice cream, crafted in flavors you won’t find anywhere else. Nimble & Finn’s Handmade Ice Cream Utilizing local produce and organic dairy, sisters Leandra and Jazmin craft inspired takes

SANTA ROSA METRO CHAMBER

The vintage hole-in-the-middle cake of our moms’ (or grandmas’) era is making a comeback. Local owners Jan and Waverly are a mother and daughter team behind the new Santa Rosa location where cakes are baked fresh each day. From bite-sized bundtinis and miniature bundtlets to sharable standard sizes and tiered towers, these delicious treats are sure to make your day a little bit sweeter. Crumbl Cookies

on classic ice cream flavors with add-ins and toppings that change seasonally. For that extra bit of decadence, try one of their creative ice cream cocktail concoctions like the Black Velvet—a whiskey butterscotch & chocolate ice cream blended with Moonlight Brewing’s Death & Taxes and topped with toasted marshmallow fluff. Kona Ice Speaking of cold and delicious, Kona Ice will bring the sweet refreshment of shaved ice directly to your company picnic, school fundraiser or whatever event you may be attending around the community. Don’t call it an ice cream truck—this brightly colored mobile refreshment stand serves up the tastiest shaved ice this side of the Pacific Ocean. Plus, you get to flavor your own—keep it simple with a single flavor or mix and match to create crazy combinations! Trader Jim’s From one island treat to another, this cute vintage trailer also brings the sweetness to your party or nearby farmers’ market. A cool, refreshing treat, Trader Jim’s pineapple “Dole Whip” soft serve and whipped floats will seem awfully familiar if you’ve been to the Enchanted Tiki Room at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Who can resist the warm, just out of the oven, gooey goodness that is a cookie? Made fresh daily and baked in an open kitchen for all cookie-lovers to see up close, Crumbl has a weekly rotating menu with 120+ specialty cookies while their signature chocolate chip and chilled pink sugar cookies are always available. These are oversized delights, so you may want to invite a friend to share!

The primary duty of a media company, at its core, is to seek out and tell the truth through its journalism. At the same time, we must maintain a company culture that is inclusive and free of discrimination of any kind. We at Sonoma Media Investments, LLC, acknowledge the difficult truth that over the course of our long history, we have not always been consistent or effective in fulfilling another duty, to protect and defend those who are trivialized, disregarded, sidelined or treated unfairly in our community, and within our own company. We at SMI are committed to creating and maintaining a company culture that is actively antiracist and scrupulously inclusive within our company’s work environment, and in how we report on and engage with the community we serve, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, national origin, faith, age, ability or size. We pledge to promote equality and humane treatment of others, and to oppose prejudice, indifference, sexism, intolerance and hate. This we will do through our hiring, promotion and retention practices, through our advertising programs and customer service, and through our news coverage and community engagement.
