Participants will learn how to hand sew using plastic needles, yarn, and plastic grids. Upon completion of paper designs and weaving, students will begin using real sewing needles to hand stitch materials, adding buttons, beads, or sequins. All students will create a tie-dye shirt to wear at the Marisol Deluna Foundation 2nd Annual Fashion Show. Fine and gross motor skills are used as these various habitats, from the arctic, to the desert, to the jungle, are built. The LEGO animals are positioned in their corresponding natural environments. Role playing and verbalization skills are enriched. Mathematics, engineering, and architectural concepts are involved in the design of the students’ personal renditions. Measurement, estimation, and geometry are discussed as their projects are developed and enhanced. They problem-solve, both individually and in a team setting. Examples of challenges include (1) using only one size or one color of bricks (2) building
a specific object, shape, or animal, and (3) building with a predetermined number of bricks. Math concepts, estimation, prediction, critical thinking and reasoning are some of the many skills that are enhanced. The students will also construct their own specific and unique LEGO bricks “builds”. In addition to imagination, math and engineering skills are used as they progress from their initial concept to their finished project. Verbal skills are enhanced as discussions concerning form, design, adjustments, and enhancements occur throughout this process.
