JESSICA CLEMMONS We go one-on-one with the front woman taking the music industry by surprise with her refreshing country sound. The “Nitty Gritty singer is just getting started. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF! HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SINGING AND HOW DID IT ALL START?! Well I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I decided at a really young age, about 5 or 6, that I wanted to be a professional singer so I spent my

life trying to get as good at it as possible and try to find my way into this industry. I spent about 10years as a solo artist and then made the decision a year ago, after working with the bandits for a couple of years, that becoming a band was the way to go. Thankfully they agreed and now here

SKORCHMAG.COM 27 Vol.8 Issue 4 JUL/AUG 2015

we are! We met when I was opening for The Overtones in 2012 and the guys were their backing band. As soon as we met we instantly connected on a musical and personal level. It really was the start to something special.

In the states, everyone knowsand/ or listens to country. In the UK it's something different and I think it's pretty awesome for us to be a band that is introducing it to folks.

WHAT IS IT LIKE PERFORMING COUNTRY MUSIC ACROSS THE U.K.? Amazing! It's so exciting to perform a genre of music that is literally brand new to so many people.

(I.E. FISH AND CHIPS? CURRY? DRIVING ON

ANY NEW FOUND UK FAVORITES? OPPOSITE SIDE OF ROAD?)

I haven't been brave enough to drive in the UK yet. I'm worried I'll get stuck on a roundabout! Definitely Indian food and Chinese

JESSICA CLEMMONS continued from previous page... food are amazing in the UK. Proba- WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE bly some of the best I've ever had! OPTIONS FOR PLUS SIZE SHOPPING? I think things are getting so much HOW HAS YOUR FASHION EVOLVED IN THE LAST 5 YEARS? better! With brands like Evans in the UK, Torrid and Eloquii in the I think I have discovered myself U.S., just to name a few, the opthrough fashion. I am learning to tions are a hundred times better take more risks and trusting my instincts when it comes to clothes now than when I was growing up. In fact it's better now than 5 years and all things fashion. In turn that ago. I would love to see plus size has made me so much more conbrands stop trying to make evfident in who I am and it's pretty erything so matronly. The cuts on cool to have fans tell me how some of the outfits are dreadful. much they love my look. Just because we have a few more curves going on doesn't mean we want to hide them or wear a tent to completely cover them up if we don't want to show them off. It would also be great to see "normal" size brands start to carry higher sizes. There are some people, like myself, who are on the lower end of plus size but the "normal" sizes stop at a size 10. How about those in between? In fact, throw some more fabric in there and keep extending the sizes. I don't see why that has always been such a difficult concept for so many designers.

WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING PLUS SIZED IN THE COUNTRY MUSIC WORLD? I don't really think much of it really. My identity is not in being plus size. Yes, I am plus sized, but that's not the only thing about me. I think because I have that attitude, most people don't seem to care, in fact, they seem to appreciate that I am real. I have the same struggles that most women do, they can relate to me. At the end of the day it's about the music, not about my size. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR STYLE ICONS? Marilyn Monroe tops the list for sure. Others would honestly be bloggers who I find to be amazing role models and fashionistas. I don't think you have to be famous to be a style icon. You just need style and confidence! WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH SKORCH AND EVANS ON THIS HUGE SHOOT?

I had so much fun! What girl doesn't love playing dress up and having her hair and makeup done?!? I've already decided I want to be a model now haha. It definitely didn't hurt being able to keep the clothes either! WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM JESS AND THE BANDITS OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS? More music, more tours, and more amazing videos! Pretty much music world domination! Seriously though, we just want to continue to make music and get out there for people to hear it. Of course we'd love some number 1s under our belts but as long as we can keep doing what we love, that is all we care about.

CALLIE

/ by tiffany kaelin knight editor-in-chief HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR COVER SHOOT MATES? I would describe George as a retro goddess, pin curled and perfect. A modern day Jessica rabbit if you will. Danie is sassy and bold and her style stands out of the crowd! She is so fashionable it hurts, lol! IF YOU WERE TO CREATE YOUR OWN FASHION LINE, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? I would love to see more minimal pieces, oversized cuts, something similar to Zara but in plus as I think it is what is missing in the plus market. DO YOU FEEL THERE ARE ANY MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN U.S. AND U.K. PLUS FASHION? I think there is a difference but it’s not huge. I think plus size brands are more engaged with their bloggers in the U.S. There are more relatable campaigns being created by bloggers in which they have creative control, and I think it is really important because they are able to give direct feedback from readers about what they want.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF BEING ON THE TELEVISION SHOW, PLUS SIZED WARS? It was interesting. I was worried about the editing but thankfully we all came across well, and the feedback was very positive.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? I would love to continue to work in the industry to push boundaries and continue to inspire women to be involved in fashion!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR COVER SHOOT MATES? Callie is cool, fashionable and often loves to rock every shade of black! Think laid back urban chic with statement pieces and the most incredible long hair framing her babydoll face. Danie is so utterly unique and quirky! Fur! Sequins! Different hairstyles! Flawless make up! All the lipstick! She is so edgy it hurts and she does it with such ease. IF YOU WERE TO CREATE YOUR OWN FASHION LINE, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? I have a plus size vintage inspired line right now, and I love it! My next dream is to have a lingerie line! Gorgeous lightly padded bras for plus sizes - big backs and bigger cups would be our focus, but we would never forget the smaller cupped ladies! DO YOU FEEL THERE ARE ANY MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN U.S. AND U.K. PLUS FASHION? I do think that we have edgier, more fashionable and affordable stuff over

here, and the items in the U.S. seem to be slightly pricier and often a little more ‘daring’ in terms of showing of the figure - tighter, shorter garments. HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF BEING ON THE TELEVISION SHOW, PLUS SIZED WARS? Utterly nerve wracking! We were filmed for so long and it was such an unknown as to what would be shown! But it seems to have worked out for the best! WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? I’ll hopefully have a few ankle biters by then! And ideally still be blogging and doing what I do now! DANIELLE

vanier

/ by tiffany kaelin knight editor-in-chief HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR COVER SHOOT MATES? George - George is one of the most photogenic girls out there. I love how she can transform from a 50s pin up model to a saucy minx depending on the photoshoot. She styles her hair perfectly, has the cutest smile going and has nailed how to pose in a photo! This girl rocks a body con like no other! Callie - Callie makes classic pieces like a moto jacket and ripped jeans look incredible. Her smile lights up a room, she has the best bouncy hair and although her style is really relatable it is never, ever boring. IF YOU WERE TO CREATE YOUR OWN FASHION LINE, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? This is my ultimate dream! I change up my style so often, it’s hard to know what I would want to focus on but I know it would be full of edgy, fashion forward pieces, insane prints and lux fabrics. DO YOU FEEL THERE ARE ANY MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN U.S. AND U.K. PLUS FASHION? Personally, I find that I prefer UK fashion as I find it a lot more edgier and quirky BUT I love the fact that there are tons of cool indie brands in the US that cater to

the plus size girl. I wish we had more of that here. I like how the US brands seem to work with plus size bloggers a lot more; it engages the plus audience and I hope that the UK brands follow suit! HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF BEING ON THE TELEVISION SHOW, PLUS SIZED WARS? I loved it, I’m a bit of a show off so it was fun! I am glad it was received so well and that everyone seemed to love the show. We were all worried about editing and how we would come across but I think everyone came across well. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? I would love to be at the top of my game, blogging and styling and continuing to inspire people of all sizes to enjoy fashion and to realize that whatever your shape or size; you can wear whatever you want! curves SIMONE CHARLES ig @simonecharles_ LONDON, ENGLAND

Honoring my curves means living, loving and embracing every inch of my body without any shame. I love being a curvier girl...it makes me feel sexy, feminine and confident. If I can inspire one woman to feel a little better about herself then I am doing my job right! For too long curvier girls have been made to feel as though they should be ashamed of, and cover up, their bodies. This is the start of a revolution that puts an end to that ridiculous notion; start celebrating all that makes you feel beautiful! (Photographer: Simon Wisbey)

Vol.8 Issue 4 JUL/AUG 2015

Honoring my curves to me means embracing every part of who I am: from my stretch marks, to my cellulite, to my acne scars, to my beautiful soul that I cherish. I have one body, it’s mine, and I love it. It took me years to learn how incredible it was. How every mark on not only MY body, but everyone’s body, has a purpose, and a story of why it’s there. It’s time we start embracing each other for who we are as people, not for the size of jeans that we wear, the way our hair lays, or the way our thighs may or may not touch. You are so beautiful. Imperfections don’t exist in my book. You are perfect in your skin. Treat yourself like it. Honor yourself.

MEAGAN KERR ig @thisismeagankerr

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

Honoring my curves, to me, means respecting and celebrating our bodies as they are - however that may be. Not just dressing nicely (although as a style blogger (www.thisismeagankerr.com) that is a big part of my life), but also getting enough sleep, eating foods that allow your body to perform at its best, and generally being kind to yourself. It’s taken a lot of work for me to be able to say that I truly love every part of my body, but making the time and effort to honor myself in that way has really changed my outlook on life.

MEGAN AKA BODYPOSIPANDA ig @bodyposipanda ESSEX, UK

I honor my curves by trying to teach girls that beauty isn’t one-dimensional; it comes in every size, every skin color, every age, every gender, and every ability. Nothing about our bodies defines our worth. Our curves are kickin’, but our magic extends so far beyond them.

aka Curvy Sam

Every September, over 100,000 industry insiders from 32 countries including buyers, retailers, celebrities, models, corporate executives, VIPs and members of the regional, national and international press flock to New York, the fashion capital of the world to view the collections from showcasing designers during New York Fashion Week.

Creating and designing clothes that will work both in Australia and in global markets is one the biggest challenge of expanding internationally, since it's Winter in Australia, for example, when it's Summer in New York. With the positive press around plus size fashion, a receptive international buying audience and the success that's been had by mainstream the Australian designers showing the past few seasons in New York and London, we're betting on it.

HOPE & HARVEST

Australian brand Hope & Harvest are getting attention on the international stage as plus size designers showcasing their Spring/Summer 2016 range at New York Fashion Week Plus. Not only are they attending but have been invited to open the show on September 10.

MEET LIZZO, THE BODY POSITIVE GRRRL RAPPER When a full day’s work of PR can be conducted from the comfort of your own bed, you might at this point in your career consider yourself “fortunate.” Or at least this is how Lizzo described herself when she answered the phone for our interview. With my questions ready and nerves settled, I knew based on previous interviews that she had a lot on her mind and an eloquent way of wording it (she’s a rapper after all).

But what I didn’t know was the level of self-actualization I would be receiving in the process. Lizzo was born in Detroit, raised in Houston and eventually found her way to Minneapolis. Her musical sound has been described as “no-genre hip-hop” and her eclectic style matches this nomad description. Extremely self- aware yet constantly leaving room for growth, Lizzo has decided to em-

You’ve been labeled multiple times as being a “body-positive rapper.” Is this a term that you personally identify with? I thought [the term] was cool because I don’t want to be seen as ‘body negative.’ Or be seen

as a fat shamer, because I am very positive about my body. I love everything about it. I try to keep healthy; I try to dance at least 3-4 times a week to maintain some type of stamina. I like to take care of it and I think it likes to take care of me. I guess you can call anybody who loves themselves and takes care of themselves ‘body positive.’ But if somebody is looking for some of that in their lives and they put that tag on me and it makes it easier to find when you’re thumbing through songs, I don’t mind being that person. It’s not a tag I’m ashamed of, I’m very proud of it. How do you feel about the

brace her body, her stubbornness and her ability to learn from those around her and incorporate that into the lens in which she views the world. As a woman, artist and “big girrrrl in a small world,” Lizzo, like many of us is discovering where her story intersects and how best to tell it. She is the 27-year-old rapper that we’ve all been waiting for, and by “we” I mean literally everyone.

term, “plus size”? Is it something you identify with or use to describe yourself? I don’t actually describe myself as plus size. I describe myself as big, I describe myself as fat, I describe myself as curvy, I describe myself as hot. I think plus size isn’t a body description, it’s metric almost, like a form of measurement. It kind of happened I think in the fashion world, like when a size was bigger than sample size or normal size the store would have, they would say, ‘oh it’s plus and we don’t carry plus. We don’t carry anything more than what we have.’ So I think I can totally see why people are saying, ‘hey we shouldn’t use that word anymore.’ But at the same time it’s just a word. You know I could say, ‘are you plus size?’ just to get my point across real quick. Or, ‘what size do you wear?’ It is a short cut sometimes, but I don’t use it and I can see why people want to end it. At the same time I also would never get upset if someone said, ‘oh she’s a plus size girl.’ It would be annoying, because I’d be like, so. But it’s just a term, same as ‘fat’ or ‘big.’ You stripped down to your bra and underwear in the “What’s Underneath Project” and answered quite a few revealing questions about yourself. What was that experience like for

you? It was creatively, artistically and personally defining. I feel like I didn’t realize my message until then. I had all of these stories to tell about my family, about my skin about my existence as a black woman. I had all these stories to tell about my girls, my

Do you have any mentors? I don’t have a mentor because I just have always been really stubborn and annoyingly self-sufficient. Just ask my mother. When I was in kindergarten she would be like, ‘do I need to come to the school?’ And I’d be like, ‘no I got it!’ At 5, what do I know about getting it? (laughs) But that’s my downfall. It’s hard for me to rely on other people. The cool thing is that I’ve been learning a lot of from the people around me, especially the women. The women around me at this point in my life are the most confident, yet we’re all still learning about ourselves. From

SKORCHMAG.COM 83

I feel like I’m past learning to love and now I’m just loving. This

past year especially with that experience has been the most I’ve felt beautiful and also looked beautiful to myself. I’ve been comfortable with wearing my fro out or comfortable with wearing wigs or weaves, comfortable with no makeup, full face, full body shapers and control tights and comfortable without it. I’ve felt publicly comfortable and also privately at the same time. The page has turned to a new chapter and now it’s the beginning of just loving. Even though that means there’s going to be some remnants of the last chapter that comes over sometimes and no body’s perfect and no body just scrapes the past away. But I’ve definitely turned the page to that experience.

friends and I just didn’t know how to put it in one book. And I think that doing that interview took all of my notes and all of my stories and really compiled them for me, and it made my message really concise.

their faults and from my faults I think we’re all just kind of sharing this infinite well of wisdom that we’re all curating together. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about feminism in the last two years from my friends and I’ve learned a lot about just the other side of the social political climate of America. Being in Minneapolis around people who aren’t what I’m use to and learning from them. And this is silly and almost shallow but learning about the whole holistic lifestyle. It’s hard to be holistic when you live in Houston with fast food. So I came to Minneapolis and everything was organic. Quality over quantity was something that I never got to truly experience only because I didn’t have much money and I didn’t have many resources. I came here in the last year and a half and my eyes were opened. And I think that really went into the way I started to feel about myself. You know, my chemicals and my body image. When your quality of life is better you tend

to really feel better about yourself. What excites you the most about the new projects you’re working on? I’m excited about sharing new music. I haven’t put out new music since Lizzo Bangerz in 2013 and I feel like that was 2 years ago and I have a completely different story. My sound is growing up, I’m growing up. You know when you sit back and you’re, like man if you only knew! I wish that I could just share, like if there was an app that I could create where if you think about me my songs just come on. When you release new music you can only hope that it does good, I want people to dance and smile and I make music to make people feel good. Putting out good vibes as an artist is something I aspire to do and I’m excited to do. There’s all these moments that occur that make people happy and I just want to be one of those moments.

RUSSIAN

This photoshoot has been inspired by ambrosial beauty of a woman’s body curves, shapes and lines in the fading light of a summer evening. We believe that woman’s beauty is so clear and simple, so fragile and lightsome - it needs no boosting, proving or anything else to be flourishing... Nothing but perhaps a little bit of lace.

DOES IT ALL

Interview by Tiffany Kaelin Knight HAIR & MUA Chiara Aprea

Thank you for sitting down with Skorch! Please tell me about yourself? Hi! I’m a London Girl through and through but I come from an Italian background. I love all things fashion and am currently a MAC Makeup Artist, but I love working freelance on TV and for fashion publications like Skorch! I’m also a makeover photographer specialising in plus size boudoir and love working with the British Curve Models! I try to squeze as much in as I possible can, and I love the buzz I get from doing what I love! I see that you do some modeling, what is that like? And, are there any designers that we need to know about in the States? Yeah, I love getting in front of the lens from time to time too! Modelling for me is empowering. I adore posing and playing dress up for the day, but fashion shows are where my heart lies. I have stormed a few catwalks for U.K. plus size brands and a few American brands too. I love ‘Chubby Cartwheels’ from the U.S. their stuff is so bold! Here in the UK, plus size modelling is still very new but over the last year it has exploded! It’s great that we have more choices than ever before and I think regardless of size being fashionable should be allowed for everyone. Oh! And, I did a catwalk for a young lady who just graduated in fashion design, and her work is just incredible! Think 60’s meets retro chic with a dash of folk!! The name of the designer is Rosie Astbury of ‘A Rose Like This’ Designs.

Skorch

Tell me about your make up background? I have always loved doing makeup since I was little, so I decided when I was older that I would enroll a professional Makeup Artistry course. I studied at the London Davinia Fermi Makeup Academy which taught me valuable lessons and transformed my technique from self taught to something I never dreamed I could do. I think when you love something as much as I love makeup and you want to make your love your lifes work, you need to invest time and money into it. Becoming a professional was the best thing I’ve done to date. I use my makeup in all sorts of areas from TV to my boudoir work and it’s a very expressive and creative industry to be in. I love it. Tell us about your personal style? Do you have any style stars? Being a member of the LGBT community and a lover of fashion, there’s nothing I love more than mixing the two together. I love female tailoring! I love slicking my hair back, smoking my eyes out and rocking a tux pant suit and heels. I think being able to show my androgynous side in fashion, especially being plus size, is important and I take inspiration from powerful women who just don’t care about what others think like Beth Ditto and Riri. What is one thing you will never leave home without? It would have to be a lipstick. I’m a lipstick hoarder. A pop of lip colour can make a girls day! Lately within the plus size community, there have been a lot of campaigns such as #effyourbeautystandards #wearethe95percent #realisperfect etc etc...do you have one in particular that you love and follow? Why is it important to you? I love the #effyourbeautystandards I think Tess Holiday has really paved the way for all of us ‘non industry standard’ models to be seen in a positive way. Another hashtag close to my heart...(cont)

...is the #curvee which a lady I follow and know through social media started. When the #curvy was banned it was her way and now our way of making a stand and saying enough is enough. I now prefer the #curvee as it represents a world of women who all came together for the same cause, it’s a great sense of community. What was it like working with Jess from Jess and the Bandits? Working with Jess was such a treat!!! She has such an amazing personality and an infectious laugh. Plus the woman’s skin is a dream to work on!!!!!! It was great meeting her before the British Plus Size Awards in November, I’m presenting the awards show so to meet the beautiful face behind the voice was fantastic.

If you were going to a red carpet event...describe to us your dream outfit! My dream outfit would be a deep black, ultra tight figure hugging dress to show of my curves with a low cut tuxedo neckline for that edgy androgynous look. Oh and of course a train at the back! I love elaborate, edgy fashion! Id would probably slick my hair back and put a deep wine colour lip on with a bare eye. #dressgoals And finally, where can our readers find you and follow you? How do you feel about the options for plus size fashionistas? I won’t be satisfied until I can buy the same things straight size people can buy - why must it be so hard to find special pieces? I’m so over new plus size collections that are full of the basics I’ve been able to buy for the past 5 years. I want to see the trends typically available for straight sizes in plus sizes 26-32. What are some tips you can give to people interested in fashion and how they can get creative with their looks? Don’t be afraid to shop online. Also - buy matching sets, you’ll have so many more options without breaking the bank.
