#honormycurves by honor curves

This month I feature four women who inspired me, as we get ready for frolicking in the summer sun. It is so important to be comfortable in our bodies, willing to take risks, and able to get out there to enjoy those BBQs and trips to the beach. Many plus-size women have seen this as a challenge in the past, myself included, and these women help me to remember that in the blazing sun we can be beautiful in short skirts, bikinis, leg-baring dresses and midriff-on-display crop tops. We can enjoy these stunning bodies all summer long, at every beautiful size. These four beautiful women have been inspirations in my life for so many reasons: Jessica, with her fashionista blog, Danielle, with her confident attitude, Anita, with her willingness to be in the public eye and love herself regardless of beauty standards, and Laura, with the mindset to acknowledge the positive and drown out the negative. View their Instagrams to read their full stories and peruse the #HonorMyCurves hashtag to see countless others whose stories inspire us to love ourselves more and always HONOR OUR CURVES. When you shine, we all shine. Own your curves, accept yourself, and never apologize for your beauty. xoxo Honor Curves APRIL 2013 \ PG20 \ WWW.SKORCHMAG.COM

#honormycurves jessicatorres Bronx, NY instagram @tinyredshoes Jessica, beautiful style blogger from www.tinyredshoes.com, is a fashion icon for any woman. She says: “Our bodies are perfect no matter what size, shape, or color; they are beautiful because they are ours. Whenever I feel depressed because an ad tells me I should look a certain way I remember that young, teenage Jessica who wanted to be beautiful and stylish but

would feel ashamed to do so because of her body. I honor my curves with outfits that serve my body with style, that silence those voices that say plussized women aren’t fashionable, nor should be. I honor my curves by being happy with who I am.” As soon as I saw Jessica’s Instagram, I knew I had to feature her. Every outfit is so on point!

#honormycurves daniellevanier London, England instagram @daniellevanier Danielle, sassy fashion blogger (daniellevanier@ tumblr.com), got a lot of attention with this post. So much inspiration and positive feedback that I knew I’d be featuring this stunning woman. Danielle says: “How to get a beach perfect body: Put on a f*cking swimsuit and get down to the beach. If

you’re fat, you’re fat. No point disguising it. I’m ready for the summer and I hope you are too.” I just love the attitude on this woman. She has a plethora of lovely outfits and a sense of herself that is often unmatched; thank you for being unafraid to be yourself.

#honormycurves anitamarshall Boston, MA instagram @anitamarshall_ Anita, (www.facebook. com/AnitaMarshallFanPage), is an inspiration to many women as she graces international campaigns as one of today’s hottest professional curvaceous models. Anita says: “I honor my curves. Unfiltered. Large. Sexy. Today I can finally say screw what society

has to say about my cellulite, stretch marks, and wide hips. I am beautiful, just like you. And I hope you’ll honor yours.” While Anita possesses jaw-dropping beauty, her confidence and humility truly make her one of my favorite models out there.

#honormycurves laurajohnson New Jersey, USA instagram @sinttas

Laura, a tall, curvy goddess on a self-love journey, is one of my favorite girls on Instagram. Seen here in a beautiful photo taken by Anamaria Mejia Photography, Laura says: “Honoring my curves means loving myself, inside and out. It’s acknowledging the compliments instead of only hearing the negative. For too long I let painful words eat away at me,

which I’d hide behind my smile. Looking back it just made me stronger and turned me into the person I’m proud of. To honor my curves means to embrace it all, from extra weight, to cellulite, to a big booty, whatever it may be. It doesn’t matter the size, big or small, it’s knowing who you are and loving every bit of it.”

Captured by Chelzea You for sure made a very positive entrance into the Plus Size Fashion community...how does it feel? I feel enriched not only as an Artist but as a woman. The support is endless and I could not begin to express how thankful I am to have this opportunity in which I get to make a positive impact not just to other women but in this industry and society.

meaning work as closely as you can to other Models whether they are Plus or Straight Size. For example; I had a striking young girl approach me in regards to pursuing a career in the Plus industry. So, I asked her if she would assist me on all of my photoshoots so she can see first hand the hard work, dedication and drive one must have to succeed in being a “Model.

We first saw your work with the fabulous Denise BiWhat advice would you dot, was she your first plus give a person wanting to get into Plus Size modeling? size client and what was it I strongly suggest to shadow if possible, like working with a Plus Size Model for the first time? Actually no, professionally my first plus photoshoot was capturing the captivating Plus Model Erin Tinsley. Which was later featured in Bay Fashion Magazine where I was the only Canadian published, therefore you could say that opened the next door for Captured. The door leading to Denise Bidot, who obviously needs no introduction. Both women were beyond inspiring, just like the rest of my clientele. >> continued next page

The “eyebrow” as we now call it created quite a stir...did you expect such a reaction? and how do you feel about it now looking back? The ‘Eyebrow”, (laughs) love it! To be honest, we knew what we were doing. What we were doing was going beyond the expectancy of what a Plus Model is capable of and that isn’t just a “hand on hip and big commercial smile.” We wanted to push the envelope and we did just that, but I didn’t expect it to cause such controversy. I mean some of the feedback was just unnecessary. Like I’ve always said and will continue to say. “Art has no rules, it has no rights nor wrongs therefore who is anybody to say what we did was wrong when all we were JUNE 2013 \ PG32 \ WWW.SKORCHMAG.COM

doing was creating Art.” At the end of the day, looking back I have no regrets. It actually inspired me for my next shoot with is this Months Cover and Spread featuring the beautiful and brow-less Plus Model Nicole Dilley. What does someone have to do to be Captured by Chelzea? Honestly, I have to feel a connection with the client. I set up a call shortly after connecting, I arrange for my Styling Coordinator to meet personally with them one on one to get a better feel for them. Only because I like my photoshoots to feel like it is just your typical day with your Girlfriends. I want everyone on set to feel comfortable, relaxed and I stand by my words when I say “I don’t care what Agency you repre-

sent if I feel that a Model will be cause any kind of grief, then they are not a Model I want or need to capture”. What is your inspiration? My inspiration is simple, “Inspire to Inspire”. I do what I do, so that others hopefully can find inspiration in pursuing their dreams. That alone, Inspires me to keep creating. What is your dream shooting location? It was New York but since I’ve already done that I would have to say Bali.

Where are you based out of? Captured is based out of Vancouver, but New York is now our second home. Who would be your dream plus size celebrity client? Before Erin Tinsley and Denise Bidot contacted me I had always said my top three choices would be Erin, Denise and Ashley Graham. So now that I’ve captured two of the three, Ashley...call me (laughs).

quickseven

When I am on set I love listening to? I usually like to play whatever the client likes, helps get them into their zone that’s if we are at a location where we can even play music. When I am not shooting I love...? When I’m not shooting I take it easy, the industry will consume you if you let it therefore you have to allow yourself to escape into a whole other world and find a happy medium between work and sanity. What should a model NEVER do on set? Get naked, just kidding. How would you describe your esthetic/ style? Well my shooting style is pretty casual but depending on the weather, jeans, boots, bomber jacket, tank and some wicked accessories. Favorite on set meal? Usually we swing by Starbucks pre shoot, and then on set it’s either raw foods or depending on the team baked goods.

when did you get started in modeling? Technically, my first modeling job was when I was 2 years old for the Fisher Price Compact Kitchen. I started seriously pursuing my dream in 2008 and I signed with Heffner Management exactly 2 years ago. our readers ask all the time, how do I become a plus size model...what advice would you give them? First off, do your research! Study agency boards and fashion magazines and see how working models move and what kind of images they have in their portfolios. Practice your movement, angles, and facial expressions in the mirror to see what works for you. Have a friend or family member take photos of you so you're comfortable in front of the camera and to see what works and what doesn't work. When you're ready to submit to agencies, follow their guidelines and criteria for submission. Also, be ready to invest in your career once you're signed and network with industry professionals. Never stop practicing and testing, and

keep a positive attitude. Good luck! how was the experience working with Captured by Chelzea? It was absolutely AMAZING! Chelzea does a great job at making the model feel comfortable, and her passion is contagious. Even leading up to the shoot, she was so attentive and involved in the details. She really impressed me from start to finish. Plus, she is one of the sweetest people ever. The whole team worked together so perfectly, and the day was so much fun and full of laughs, despite the cold weather. So, I'd like to thank Chelzea (photographer), Shannah Azimullah (stylist), Barborka Jindrakova (stylist), Tracey Le (MUAH), and Karli Robinson (assistant) for being such an amazing team to create these fabulous images. I highly recommend booking Captured by Chelzea! What inspires you? I'm inspired by fashion trends and art. I studied art history in college and I'm a portrait artist as well, so I have a lot of appreciation for creativity. This inspires me to get my creative juices flowing with a
