ESCAPE THE ORDINARY

Summer is a sexy, coconut-flavored, sandy, sweat-covered, sunburned, dripping popsicle, bare skinned, surf’s up, easy living, blue sky, afternoon thunderstorm, hazy contradiction. We love you, late sunsets, beaches, bonfires, sea breezes, salt spray, fireflies, open windows, linen and cotton, vitamin D, flip flops, hammocks, teeny bikinis, picnics and parades, and the marsh perfume blanketing muggy mornings. We hate you, bugs and bites, sweat down our back, 98 degrees in the shade, sandy sandwiches, sunburns, teeny bikinis, hot car interiors, sticky hands, thighs chafing, broken air conditioners, and making our kids go to bed while it’s still light outside. But our love for the Coppertone billboard version of summer outweighs all the calamine lotion and aloe in the world. We wait so long for these months of slow, lazy hours, time enough to breeze through our beach reads, these back porches, these barbecues, these cocktail umbrella drinks, these tanned shoulders. It’s a season for a reason, so make every single steamy day the one you’ll remember in December. Bravely bare your winter-white skin, shake out the beach blankets, clean the grills, uncover the pools, slather on the SPF, and give it all up to the sunny days of summer. Dear Matchmaker I have found myself reading your blog and, unfortunately, relating to much of it. I have been single for over 6 years and in that time I have joined and deleted more dating profiles from so many different sites that I can no longer keep track of which one’s I have tried and which one’s I have not. The biggest issue that I run into is that those that are on many of these sites, say that they want a serious commitment, and are tired of the dating games, but in the end it seems that all they do is play games. I have had ladies start chatting and then when it comes to meeting, they always back out or just kind of disappear. I am a stable, professional man, I take care of my health and am just looking for someone that wants the same things in this life. What am I doing wrong? Sincerely, Dan B. – Charleston,SC Hi Dan, Thank you for your letter. I want to start out with stating that there is NOTHING wrong with you, and you are not alone with your concerns and frustrations. Online dating is a wonderful and Horrible beast all in its own. For starters, there are THOUSANDS of “singles” online, so if you are looking for a tool to just scroll through pictures and chat, well then this is ideal. The problem with online dating is that it also gives everyone the ability to create whatever persona that they can imagine. I have always told the members that I work with that if they are going to try online dating to keep a few things in mind.. Anyone with access to the internet can join an online dating service and for a few of these sites, they do not even need a debit or credit card to do so. This means that you literally have NO idea where these “people” are actually filling out their information from. Professional Matchmakers are one on one and get to know exactly who you are. Which would you prefer someone that listens or just another blurb on another site?

South Carolina Matchmakers is a highly selective Matchmaking service right here in Charleston. Why not take just a moment and contact them today at 843-310-0201 or southcarolinamatchmakers.com 147218-XX-5.indd 1 CHSSK_160600_0012-00021.indd 15

I N H E R OW N WO R D S

SPENCER GEORGE

Spencer George is a 17-year-old writer, feminist, and blogger. She is the founder of the #NOTYOURGIRL campaign, which encourages young girls to embrace their true selves.

“I love my body because it allows me to run, and swim, and hike, and explore, not because of the way it looks in a bikini.”

When I think of summer, I think of long, bright days, warm, breezy nights, and afternoons spent ducking under cool ocean waves. And while all of these evoke pleasant recollections of a joyous season, for many the thought of summer brings with it dread for the so-called “swimsuit season.” June and July are all about possessing the perfect “beach body,” a stereotype often associated with someone slim, toned, and tan. Along with warm weather comes the fear of short, tight clothing, the discomfort associated with being told one shouldn’t feel relaxed because their body doesn’t match up with an often impossible ideal. Having grown up surrounded by content that told me I couldn’t like myself unless I was thin and lithe, I used to believe I wasn’t allowed to partake in the same activities as many of my friends for this reason. When I flipped open teen magazines and looked through their pages advertising an “ideal summer,” I struggled to find myself in the images. I cancelled plans, stayed inside, and refused to partake in many typical summer activities, all because I felt I didn’t fulfill a certain image. But here’s the thing: there is no perfect “beach body. ” Summer is a season, not a set of guidelines for how one’s appearance should be maintained. Nor should summer—and the weather it brings with it— dictate how we live our lives. I love my body because it allows me to run, and swim, and hike, and explore, not because of the way it looks in a bikini. Summer is a time meant for fun and relaxation, which is something everyone deserves to enjoy. Every body is beautiful, not because of how they look, but because of all the experiences and adventures they allow us to partake in.Whether we decide to stay inside or go out and live is our choice. So, this summer I invite you to be proud of how you look, whether that be in a swimsuit on the beach or in jeans and a t-shirt at home. Self-love is something that must be cultivated personally, and accepting who we are is the very first step. After all, everyone is beautiful—we just have to be willing to believe it.

KIM REEDER

Kim Reeder’s essays have appeared in skirt! magazine and the ShriverReport.org. She lives in Kentucky with her daughter and authors the blog ALifeRevised.com.

F O R T H E L OV E O F A TO M ATO “ I f s u m m e r ’s l u s h g r e e n c o u l d b e p e r c e i v e d b y t h e n o s e , i t w o u l d m o s t c e r t a i n l y s m e l l l i k e a t o m a t o v i n e .”

Our senses have the power to place us in the past. For me, the smell of wax paper will always take me to a picnic with my mother when I was four years old. The senses may also frame our experience of a particular season or holiday. The smell of cinnamon at Christmas. The sight, smell and sound of explosions and acrid smoke from neighborhood fireworks on the Fourth of July. When it comes to experiencing summer, my senses converge on tomatoes, a vegetable (well, fruit) which exemplifies the taste, sight and smell of our warmest season. Tomatoes absorb a mixture of summer’s hot sun and plentiful water and, in the best years, create a matchless balance of sugar and acid on the tongue. For the eyes, a peek-a-boo of red, orange or yellow amidst rich vegetation alerts us to the presence of a ripe tomato, a welcome surprise reminiscent of finding forgotten cash in an old dress pocket. Not forgetting the olfactory sense, if summer’s lush green could be perceived by the nose, it would most certainly smell like a tomato vine. Perhaps obviously, my feelings about tomatoes approach an affair of the heart. If I were a castaway on an island in the Pacific Ocean and could take one food with me, it would be tomatoes. And, not surprisingly, my fondness extends only to tomatoes grown by me, my friends/family or a local farmer– pale tomatoes traveling across the country in cardboard cartons need not apply. Once I flip the calendar to May, my daughter counts down the days until the last day of school and I count down the days until I am able to eat my first tomato of the season. Regardless of the date, that day is my first day of summer. My affection originated in the summers of my childhood. My parents grew, harvested and preserved tomatoes with great devotion. Many summer evenings found them walking through rows of tomato plants and filling five-gallon buckets until they overflowed with red and orange orbs. If additional time was needed for ripening, the tomatoes would be placed on a makeshift table constructed from plywood and sawhorses. On one of these evenings, just as the fireflies had started to flicker in our backyard, I noticed my father emerge from our house carrying a salt shaker towards the table of tomatoes. He surveyed its display and selected a ripe Early Girl tomato. Sprinkling it with salt, he bit into the flesh. He continued sprinkling and biting until the tomato’s juices ran down his arm and dripped from his elbow. I can’t recall seeing him more content. My tomato love affair continued into my adulthood where it made appearances in actual love affairs, always happy to

38

play second fiddle. There were shared caprese salads. Or, the sound of clinking glasses of crisp white wine enjoyed with skewers of grilled chicken and cherry tomatoes. Two memories, however, stand out. The men in these memories had special qualities that resembled the specimen of tomatoes they bring to mind. The first man searched for the perfect bacon and tomatoes at a June farmer’s market, finally settling for choices that didn’t quite meet his high standards. He struggled to understand that perfection can’t be attained in summer, or likely at all. There are too many mosquitoes. Too much sweat soaking through cotton tees. Too many sunburned shoulders. If I likened him to a type of tomato, he would be a San Marzano, most often grown in Italy and the only tomato that can be used for Pizza Napoletana. As with him, this varietal is colorful and able to withstand the heat of processing, but with a bittersweet flavor and uncompromising structure. Some chefs call the San Marzano the best tomato of its kind; however, I doubt many would claim that it is tender enough to savor sliced with a simple dash of salt. My strongest nostalgia pools around a man who was an improbable concoction of sweetness and substance enclosed within a thick exterior, perhaps akin to a beefsteak varietal in the tomato world. He added American cheese to the BLTs we made with tomatoes from his garden. Who could have imagined a slice of cheese could melt itself around my heart so completely? He was the poster child for all things summer, with the wholesomeness and ease of freshly-mowed lawns, baseball and blackberry cobbler at a church picnic. Vibrant potential embodied in green foliage and unripe fruit so heavy that the vines bent under its weight. Potential, however, is delicate. Harsh conditions such as too much rain, too little sun or aphids can cause blossoming plants to wither long before they have borne ripe fruit. In the wake of their withering, I mourned the brown leaves but understood the necessity of yielding to nature’s will. Even the most beautiful summer days must come to an end. Yet, all was not lost. I took comfort in the knowledge that the cycles of the universe would follow their usual pattern. As they always do, fall colors and twinkling holiday lights would give way to red-breasted robins and patchworks of daffodils. Then, one fine morning, I would reach the breathless realization that red tomatoes had started to cluster on backyard vines and in crowded farmer’s market bins. My first day of summer was arriving once again and love would rise anew.

CARLA SARETT

Carla Sarett has worked in TV, film and ran her own market research business. Her short fiction has been published in numerous literary and humor magazines, including Crack the Spine, Loch Raven Review, and Rose Red Review. Learn more about Carla at Carlasarett. blogspot.com.

H OW I L E A R N E D T O S T O P W O R RY I N G A N D B U Y A B AT H I N G S U I T “ B y t h e t i m e J u n e r o l l s a r o u n d , w e ’ r e p a l e , p a s t y , a n d l e t ’ s f a c e i t , a y e a r o l d e r. ”

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, my prime fashion spending years came to a grinding halt at 40. I never got the news flash. Call me shallow, but shopping cheers me up, and compared to drugs or drink, it’s sort of healthy, isn’t it? So, name any season, and I am thinking, what can I buy next? Tencel joggers? Well, count me in! A slinky maxi-skirt? I think so! A utility vest, that works, and come to think of it, I could sure use a pair of wide-legged linen pants. But then there’s summer. Yes, the golden season of beaches, barbeques, and…bathing suits. Those months where we get to show more and I do mean more. I guess if you live in Florida, you hardly notice it. But in Pennsylvania, by the time June rolls around, we’re pale, pasty, and let’s face it, a year older. (Something about a bathing suit will remind you of that fact, and quickly. Too quickly. Like fast enough to make you run from the room screaming.) I hear some wise self-help guru in the background intoning, “You must learn to love yourself.” Believe me, I do love myself! Seriously, I do. I just don’t love the way I look in a bathing suit. And no, this isn’t about men at all. My husband, bless his soul, thinks any old rag I happen to wear looks “fine.” Unless I dress up as a circus clown, I’ll be “fine” to him. To be clear, my figure, all things considered, is no worse than most. On an average day, I don’t give it a second thought. I look, as my spouse so eloquently puts it, “fine.” But those who design bathing suits (a cruel, vicious bunch) must have Cameron Diaz in mind as their average gal. Trust me, no matter how much I honor myself, I’ll never look like Cameron. Even photo-shopped, not even close. OK, so it’s not exactly global warming, but it is... stressful. How to cope? I happen to be a market researcher, and I’ve gleaned a few nuggets of wisdom in the process of conducting hundreds of consumer interviews. I’ve learned that most of us—yes, men, too—view our bodies as works in progress. There’s always a “problem spot” to be solved through exercise, diet or magical thinking. For some women, it’s flabby arms; for others, it’s too-large hips, the not flat enough stomach, or the too-flat rear. (And let’s not get started on breasts. Seriously, never.) But that’s no reason to give up.

56

Here’s my secret formula for taking the stress out of summer’s least pleasant chore: 1. Shop alone! Sometimes, friends are not your friend, and this is one of those occasions. You’ll buy anything to avoid your pal’s sympathetic smile, while she says, “well, it’s not as bad as the last one.” Solution? Avoid anyone you know, even remotely, including relatives, especially (need I even say it?) mothers. This is one time to act like a guy and go solo. Whew, one gruesome moment out of your life deleted. 2. Shop early! Frankly, I’d rather clean my entire house than shop for a bathing suit—hey, I’d clean yours to put it off. In my dream world, I’d pick up a swimsuit in a jiffy at the airport or, better yet, the hotel gift shop (for the record, this is a very, very bad idea). But finding a halfway decent swimsuit requires trial and error, mostly error—so plan accordingly. No last minute shopping! 3. Forget size. Forget your dress or pants or even your bra size. This has no relation to the wacky world of bathing suits. And while it’s no big deal wearing a too-tight sweater, a suit needs to fit (assuming you actually intend to get in the water). Just try on, say, a dozen sizes, and you’ll be fine. 4. Get thee to a shopping website. Sure, you pay shipping, and you’ll need to order multiple sizes, but you’re spared the nightmare of the dressing room (is it my imagination or are those lights a ghastly yellow?). Plus, you get nifty consumer reviews like, “it sucks my stomach in” or “make sure you order a size up” or my personal favorite, “I can’t say how much I hate this.” 5. Forget how you used to look in a bikini. The cardinal rule. We all looked better at 18. Period, end of story. Younger is better in a bikini (ditto cropped tops, in case you’re wondering). Don’t peek at those old photos. And while you’re at it, remind your gorgeous daughter to enjoy the way she looks now. Finally, when you find a suit you like, please do order more than one. (Feel free to adopt my personal shopping mantra: if it’s nice, buy it twice; if it’s really nice, buy it thrice.) That way, you can skip shopping for a bathing suit next summer, and return to more urgent matters, like those new capris. And oh, by the way, have fun at the beach.

C AT H E R I N E G ROW

Catherine Grow’s work has appeared in a variety of online and print journals, magazines, anthologies, and college-level texts. Currently, she is working on a collection of stories set in the Missouri Ozark Mountains.

SERENADING LITTLE SIS “ I k n o w , b y h e a r t , e v e r y s o n g .” It’s the summer of 1965. I’m sixteen, and she’s seven. “Wanna go for a ride?” I ask my little sister, Gige. She’s on her feet in a flash, ponytails dancing as she runs to slip her bare feet into sneakers. By ride, I’m referring to the bicycling extravaganza that has become our nightly, after-dinner ritual. We borrow our brother’s Stingray low-rider: a black-framed conveyance with sturdy tires and a banana seat. Gige hops onto the padded crossbar and settles in. My arms encircle her longlegged, scabby-knee-ed little body as I reach around her to grasp the handlebars and grips. Then off we go, coasting down the driveway and into the street—at which point I begin pedaling vigorously to move us beyond the immediate confines of our neighborhood. We cross the main thoroughfare that borders our subdivision and enter more distant parts of our section of South San Jose suburbia. By this time, my voice has warmed up enough, while conversing with Gige, to begin serenading my young sibling with the Beatles’ songs that strike my fancy. And there are plenty. I have every Mop Top album so I know, by heart, every song. In time, so does Gige—well enough that she can sing along to most of the selections and prompt me with suggestions. We sing one song after another in no particular order. While doing so, I frequently ham up the delivery, much to the delight of my diminutive companion. I call her a “bird” (pronounced like “bud”)—the British vernacular for “girl”—and offer a running commentary about the songs, speaking entirely in the Liverpool accent a Beatle-crazed girlfriend and I practiced for weeks until we were proficient. Gige and I sing with gusto—the emphasis being more on volume and dramatic interpretation than pure melodic output. We bellow until our voices crack, or the sun goes down— whichever comes first—only to return the next night and the next and the next to repeat our performance. And never, during any of these exuberant nights, does a single resident along our “concert” route waylay my sister and me to scold us for making such a racket. That August, a girlfriend and I will see (and hear) the Fab Four in concert at the Cow Palace in Oakland—a good 50 miles north of where we live. Months before, my mother had found out about the concert and immediately secured two tickets. On the night of the concert, my father will drive us to the Cow Palace through a daunting maze of bodies and vehicles; hours later, as we exit the building, he will be waiting close by to pick us up. He endures this hassle without a single word of complaint. This is the era of go-go boots and ghillies, mini-skirts and Empire-waist dresses. And the hair! Oh, that perfect hair: long, straight, sleek, and shiny…on others, that is. Try as I might, my wavy coiffure refuses to be brushed, combed, sprayed, pulled, or otherwise coaxed into anything close to the ideal—though I never resort to ironing my hair, as do truly dedicated fashionistas.

And then there’s the Yardley pot ‘o gloss: the original, nonfruity version—expensive because it’s imported from the Motherland. It’s the only product I’ll allow to touch my lips…or the lips of my beloved baby sister. The Shrimp (British model Jean Shrimpton) promotes this item as well as other things British. No matter that I must bicycle many miles into an adjoining town to patronize the only drug store in the area to stock Yardley merchandise. My effort is well worth it, for Yardley means England to fellow Beatleophiles and me. And wearing anything English signifies an allegiance to our idols and allows us to feel connected to The Adored Ones—body, mind, and soul. I was recently reminded of all this when the local oldies radio station played “I Feel Fine.” I was transported back to those evenings when my sister and I aired out our lungs and spirits. Years later, Gige will relocate to Los Angeles to become the lead singer for an internationally-known alternative rock band. From there, she will live in and travel all over Europe. She’s still singing, though now her main venue is jazz. But during the summer of 1965, my little sister and I will go out into the world as a duo. Some nights, Gige will sleep in my bedroom—her cot placed so close to my twin bed that we can reach out and hold hands. We’ll eat English Muffins spread with real butter and orange marmalade; and we’ll sip Twinings of London English Breakfast tea, cooled with milk. And within the pink walls of my small, rectangular chamber, we’ll talk— about everything and nothing—until we can no longer keep our eyes open. I’ll let her cuddle the John Lennon doll I fashioned out of muslin and cotton batting from a pattern I put together earlier that summer. Together, we’ll make her one of her favorite, Ringo. In the course of the evening, we’ll get out my set of bobblehead Beatle figures and nudge them until they rock as well as “ooo” and “ahh” over the books and album covers, news clippings, and other Beatle-related memorabilia I’ve gathered into a small, red metal suitcase throughout my years of devoted fanhood. What remains are memories: recollections of the concert at the Cow Palace (No, I did not scream or become otherwise hysterical!), the homemade John and Ringo dolls, the set of bobble-heads, speaking Liverpudlian, and dressing and acting as Mod as possible to emulate the mid-sixties, Carnaby Road style of Englander. But most precious and long-lasting of all are my memories of time spent with Gige: at bedtime, when we traded confidences within the confines of my room, and while cycling over miles of residential roads, belting out Beatles’ songs until the sun went down. My sister and I sang loud and long and hammed up the lyrics. We laughed and talked in silly voices. We shared our lives—intensely and intimately—and forged a bond that, for all the years and miles that are currently between us, remains unbroken. And, just like the Beatles, we felt fine.

Imagining a better world out there starts by imagining a better one in here. Children’s minds can take them anywhere. And while they imagine a world of dinosaurs and spaceships, no child imagines themselves in a hospital. Which is why we’re building one like no other in the world. With specially trained caregivers, medicine and technology, we’ll protect the world they imagine. Imagine What’s Possible
