Little Learners (234.2.0311) Children will be introduced to socialization, positive self-esteem, following directions and simple learning concepts. Children will work on hand eye coordination, motor skills, and gain independence through the use of circle time, music, songs, stories, play and arts and crafts. Food will be provided for cooking activities and may be provided for special events. Children must be fully potty trained before the start of class. Requirements for parent attendance, volunteers, snacks, etc. varies by center. Kinder Prep (234.2.0321 & 234.2.0322) This class prepares your child for kindergarten with age-appropriate activities, learning concepts, socialization skills and fun. Your child will gain a basic understanding of shapes, colors, pre-phonics and literacy building (i.e. identifying letter sounds, and writing the alphabet and simple words), as well as number recognition, and counting up to 30. The goal is to have fun, participate and learn. Children must be fully potty trained before the start of class. Requirements for parent attendance, volunteers, snacks, etc. varies by center. Tap & Ballet: This is an introduction class to both Tap and Ballet. The class combs creative movement, grace and balance. Students learn basic tap steps such as shuffles, rhythm exercise, springs, and elementary ballet including plies, tendus, passes, and the basic ballet positions. Instruction advances with age and ability of participants. Parents may stay for the first 10 minutes of the first class and are invited back at the end of program for a class demonstration. Suggested Attire: Comfortable clothes or leotards, tights, and/or tutus. Students may dance barefoot or wear ballet shoes. Students cannot dance in stocks or tights alone, must be barefoot or wear ballet shoes. Little Dance Divas: A fun beginning dance class where students will learn Ballet warm-ups, Jazz/Hip Hop dance and Tap steps! Parents are allow to stay for the first 10 minutes on the first day of class and are encouraged to attend the last class for a great recital. Guitar—Beginners: Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen all started here, at the beginning. Here is Guitar Beginner, the primary focus is learning the guitar basics. Material covered will include reading chord diagrams, chord charts, charts, and playing scales and melodies. Come aspire to greatness with us! No experience necessary! Guitars available to play at Roosevelt Community Center. Bring your own pick! We have small group guitar lessons no more than four students per class. Guitar—Intermediate : Whether your aspiring to be the next Carlos Santana or Jimi Hendrix, come and progress your aspirations to greatness with Guitar—Intermediate. Experienced guitar players will learn to sight read and perform work from a variety of periods and composers in duets, trios or quartets. Designed for continuing/experienced students. Bring your own guitar/pick to class. We have small group guitar lessons no more than four students per class. Piano Beethoven Beginners: Come learn piano with Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse! Students will learn music theory and piano basics in a fun and positive environment. Access to piano/keyboard at home is essential. Parent or guardian must attend with child.

Piano Keyboard (Beginner): Discover the key to your child’s future success. Studies show that children who are introduced to music have an IQ jump of 3 points in the first six months! Learning to play the piano is a great way to introduce a child to this world. Class starts with basic piano skills and music reading. Giving you child the opportunity to take piano lessons allows them to learn and share a much cherished talent. Keyboards and materials are provided. Bring a set of headphones with a 1/4” adapter for use in class. Piano Keyboard (Continuing): A continuation class for students who have completed our beginners course. Students will be instructed on good practice skills, note reading, rhythm, theory, technique, and performance. Access to piano/keyboard at home is essential for progress. Bring a set of headphones with a 1/4” adapter for use in class. Future Rockstars 101—Drums Edition: Does your child have too much cool to contain? Our Future Rock Star—Drum s Edition will teach your future celebrity basic drum beats, introduction to music notes and develop coordination and rhythm, while having fun in a safe and learning environment. Mariachi:Our mariachi music class will be covering the guitar and vocal part of mariachi music that has been the music of the countryside and its inhabitants – a much loved local and regional genre. It influences the Tejano music that arose in the United States. Clase de Mariachi:Nuestra clase de mariachi le dará cobertura a la guitarra y parte vocal de la música de mariachi que ha sido la música del campo y sus habitantes - un género local y regional querido mucho. Parent/Tot Gym: Calling all active toddlers! Beginning gymnastic skills, tumbling, parachute fun, bubbles and many other gym activities will be taught in this fun class. Parent (or other adult) participation in class is required.

Mini Gym Stars: A great beginner gymnastic class teaching basic gymnastic skills, including movement exploration, balance, and coordination, and at the same time teaching agility and improving motor skills. Parents are allowed to stay for the first 10 minutes on the first day of class and are encouraged to attend the last class for a great recital.

Karate (Kenpo) Level 1: Learn a beginning form of martial arts that promotes respect, self esteem, leadership and self –confidence. This class teaches the techniques of kicking, punching, blocking, striking and selfdefense. Karate uniforms are not required, but are available through the instructor. Classes are taught by highlyqualified instructors with 2nd-5th degree Black Belts. Students are required to take our Karate Kenpo Level 1 class before registering for our Level2/3 class.

Karate (Kenpo) Level 2+: This is a continuation of the Level 1 class.

Students will learn an intermediate form of martial arts which promotes respect, self esteem, leadership and self-confidence. This class continues teaching the techniques of kicking, punching, blocking, striking and self-defense while adding elbow & knee strikes, multiple combinations, intermediate forms and intermediate self-defense techniques. Please consider the following policies and requirements before registering for a San Jose Recreation Preschool class: Requirements for parent participation, volunteer, snack, etc varies by center.

Teacher to child ratio is 1:10 or better. Participants must be toilet trained by first day of program. Non-registered children are not allowed in the class at any time. Please make arrangements for siblings on your participation day.

A birth certificate may be requested for age confirmations. The City of San Jose, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services provide recreational programs ONLY and not licensed childcare.

After reaching the class capacity your child can be put on a waitlist. If a spot becomes available at any SJ Recreation Preschool center, you will receive a call and be given the option to enroll at that center or to stay on the waiting list. Monthly payment plan is available, with auto-pay on the 20th of each month. A valid credit card must be on file for auto-pay option.
