Rhythm and Rhyme . . . It’s Celebration Time!

Best of

After the past few years, we have all found a new balance and rhythm to life and the work that we do. As we roll forward, we are delighted to announce this year’s Best of 2022 nominees and finalists. Again this year, thanks to your suggestions, we have added new categories to the “Best of” lineup. It has proven to be a bigger and more in-depth survey each year. Our voting polls opened in April and we invited you, our readers, to cast your votes in 58 categories. Categories included everything from Best Shopping to Best Healthcare Services and everything in-between. The nominees in this issue of ShowCase Magazine have been voted for their excellence and deserve our praise. We greatly appreciate all businesses and organizations that are included and the level of excellence that makes them spectacular in the work they do and the services they provide. We are so honored to be able to celebrate with these organizations. Whether you’re reading this online, in print, or on social media, we appreciate your votes and encourage you to celebrate and patronize these organizations who are celebrated as the Best of 2022!

Holy Lamb Organics Wins Green Business Award According to owner Mindy Schaefer, “Holy Lamb Organics (HLO) has always been extremely environmentally focused. It is one of our core values.” When honored at the Thurston Chamber’s Forum in April with a Green Business Award for a medium-sized company, it showcased how their vision is recognized and celebrated. Together with her husband, Jason, the couple operates a 20-person manufacturing business in Oakville that is also home to their customer service operations. Their retail store in downtown Olympia features luxurious mattresses, pillows, toppers and comforters. Holy Lamb Organics creates beautiful, sustainably handcrafted products using all natural and organic materials for a healthy, eco-friendly life and home. “Holy Lamb Organics really excels in green business practices, especially in waste management where we strive to be zero waste,” said Schaefer. All their raw materials are 100% consumed by the production process. Even small scraps are shredded and upcycled into bedding. Plus, HLO works with their vendors to be more sustainable. For example, their wool vendor is now taking back the plastic originally used to ship them batting. The vendor then re-uses the plastic to send it to HLO again. “Getting another vendor

to take that less convenient road is our out-of-the-box kind of thinking,” Schaefer added. Recognized as using “heritage” methods, HLO craftspeople truly are hand-making all the products, from cutting and tearing fabric by hand to laying the wool. Tufting and stitching are also completed by hand with a bit of perimeter stitching done on a sewing machine. “It is more time consuming, but it really is an art form.” Overall, Schaefer highlights the social components that are the platform of their business model. HLO monitors their energy consumption, works to reduce waste, and implements good labor practices. They keep a watchful eye on their vendors and only work with Global Organic Textile Standards-approved suppliers that have passed the same rigorous GOTS certification that Holy Lamb Organics has achieved. “We make sure we can trace our raw materials back to their origin and our vendors have clean practices,” said Schaefer. vLYNN CASTLE Holy Lamb Organics holylamborganics.com

experience. It is what drives their entire team to excellence. As experts in saving energy, Ranger can ensure they install the most energy efficient system for your home which takes advantage of all energy rebates and financing options.

The heating and cooling industry is in Kallander’s blood as the third generation to work in this field, starting with his grandfather some 70 years ago. In operation for more than ten years, Ranger focuses primarily on residential work and some light commercial projects where the team of 24 employees look at systems as a whole project.

Through their customer service and year-round consistent pricing, Ranger sets itself apart from others in its field. “Because we only work with strong brands like Daikin, with low failure rates, Ranger can offer lifetime workmanship guarantees,” added Kallender. Plus, Daikin products are made 100% in the USA.

“How we approach the project is not typical in our industry,” said Kallender. “We take in all the information about a home and focus on improving the overall quality from air filtration to safety.”

Serving all communities in the South Puget Sound, Ranger believes in up-front pricing and they are committed to providing professional service that is guaranteed to exceed customers’ expectations. vLYNN CASTLE

SHOWCASE MAGAZINE | BEST OF 2022

When local Master Gardner, Alex Juchems, and his wife of 22 years, Sue Cooper, made the decision to look for a home with more property to grow on, they wondered if selling their 1980’s Auburn home with all its original elements would be difficult. The couple turned to Kathy Kleber, a local Keller Williams Realtor and founder of Team RED. Team RED Realtors, an acronym for Resourceful, Experienced and Dedicated, offer special services to support clients including managing any projects or upgrades their property needs to maximize the selling price. “We knew Kathy through our church and were aware of her good values. Selecting her as our Realtor was easy and now we are so happy we did,” said Juchems recently. Kleber started by having a thorough inspection done of the couple’s home and then met with them to showcase what her list of highly qualified and vetted contractors could do. According to Alex, “Kathy said that every penny we spent would be made back double and she was right.” Once decisions were made on what elements would be improved,

Kleber and her team of contractors jumped right into the project even with the family still living there and, because of COVID, working there. “What was really nice was we didn’t have to go through the drama and the stress of each individual contractor because Kathy had a proven list of people.” The contractors worked on chimneys, gutters, siding, and other outdoor projects and, when inside, used plastic sheeting to separate the family areas from the work being done. Once moved, the contractors completed other interior work including a new master bathroom. “Kathy was so vested in our project, she even picked out tiles with us at the store and lined up a fantastic carpet installation for the entire house.” From booking qualified movers and calling in a professional cleaning crew and staging team, Kleber ensured that the transition to their new home was stress-free and the sale of their former home netted them the highest possible return.“Serving with heart; homes for all of life’s seasons,” is Team Red’s motto.” vLYNN CASTLE

Service & Convenience at the Heart of Light Dental Studio We can all agree on the qualities for the ideal dental provider: round-the-clock service, free consultations, same-day appointments, entire-family bookings, empathetic service and affordable care. It’s nearly impossible to find a full combination of such attributes. But then there’s Light Dental Studios. Based in Puyallup, the dentist-owned company—with 19 locations in the South Puget Sound—has customer service at the core of its mission. “We try to treat people the way we would want to be treated,” says owner and CEO Dr. Steven Broughton, who bought his first office from a former dentist in Puyallup in 1997. “People say our practice feels like we’re all neighbors, like they’re just going down the street for friendly dental care.”

With hours from 7am to 7pm including Saturdays, doctors available 24/7, free consultations, same-day appointments, and entire-family same-day care, Light Dental Studios has solutions patients need. “We’re trying to make dentistry effortless by making it about our patients, not the dentists,” says Broughton. “Our schedule accommodates their schedule, not the other way around. Our doctors are always available, and almost all procedures are done in-house.” Besides standard dental checkups, treatments and other services, Light Dental Studios offers on-site orthodontics, implants, surgeries and dentures, Children’s dental care is also offered. Babies are born when they are ready, not when a pandemic says so. For over two years, dedicated medical personnel tackled coronavirus challenges to safely deliver the newborns. That’s true of the team at Olympia Obstetrics and Gynecology (OOG) as they work with patients at the office and welcome babies at the Family Birth Center at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. “We love moms and babies,” said Dr. Darrel Bell. “The virus hasn’t changed how special each delivery has been. I thank all those who protect mothers and babies by wearing masks and practice social distancing.” Providence’s Family Birth Center welcomes moms and an essential support person in the delivery room which, for many patients, creates an intimate experience. These individuals are screened upon entry; moms are also tested. Masking goes without saying in healthcare facilities.

Expecting a newborn adds stress to an already challenging time in a family’s life. As they care for moms and their babies, OOG and Family Birth Center staff work together to maintain the highest standards of care and safety for their patients and families. The goal is to keep newborns with their mothers in their rooms, as a basic tenet of infant and family-centered care.

enjoy some benefits while remaining safely distanced. OOG utilizes a telehealth system that ties the visit to the patient’s electronic health record. Patients receive a link via email or text and can access us through their mobile phones, iPads and desktops.” As a patient, you can request telehealth if you feel ill and your type of visit works with telehealth parameters.

Occasionally, separation is necessary because infant care cannot take place safely in the mom’s room. This is rare. An average of 100 babies a month are delivered by OOG’s medical staff with positive patient feedback.

Deb Cannon, practice manager at the clinic, said, “We are a big family and have worked hard and been successful in keeping COVID from coming into and spreading within our facility. It is a blessing to have a less virulent strain of COVID at this time.” OOG anticipates continuation of masking and social distancing within their healthcare facility for the foreseeable future. vEMILY HAPPY

OOG is using technology to keep everyone safe. Carie Bussey, Certified Nurse-Midwife with the clinic, said, “We’ve discovered a lot of silver linings. Healthcare workers have been forced to hop on the telemedicine effort. We’ve been able to quickly adopt what works for us and patients

Bates Technical College Celebrates Grand Opening of Allied Health Education Center

Just in time to help fuel the local health care industry with much-needed skilled workers, last week Bates Technical College opened the new Center for Allied Health Education building in Tacoma.

“Our newly equipped community health clinics offer an affordable option for dental care. This addition to the Downtown Campus has nearly doubled student capacity for our allied health programs,” said Zhou.

Bates Technical College President Lin Zhou said, “The Center for Allied Health Education is more than just a new building. It represents a commitment to the South Sound health care community. With this leading-edge facility, we continue to offer practical, hands-on, and industryspecific education for high demand health care careers, and we now have space to partner with industry and provide professional development opportunities.”

Event attendees heard from a variety of speakers, including Congressman Derek Kilmer and Pierce County Executive Bruce Dammeier. Students using this new 70,000 square foot facility include future administrative and certified medical assistants, dental assistants and denturists, dental laboratory technicians, occupational therapy assistants, phlebotomists, practical nurses and certified nursing assistants.

The community health clinics serve as a hands-on learning experience for students, while providing the community with much-needed low-cost health services. “One of our points of pride is offering unparalleled allied health education, and we are thrilled to continue to transform the lives of our students and contribute to our health care industry,” said Zhou. vLEAH GROUT Bates Technical School batestech.edu

One Night in Bangkok

While some folks are still hesitant to jump on a plane, you can get a taste of Bangkok at Indochine in Tacoma. With cuisine influenced by the tastes of China, India, Japan and Vietnam, it is almost like a whirlwind trip to Southeast Asia.

New additions of note to the menu include the mouthwatering Filipino Pork Adobo and Chicken Tikka Masala. Recently, Indochine reformulated all of the sauces that they served to be gluten-free to expand options for their guests.

Before you dive into the menu, take some time to discover the amazing and distinctively Southeast Asian-inspired cocktails available. Drunken Buddha, which features coconut vodka and rum along with lime and pineapple juice, sounds almost like nirvana. Green tea infused with vodka paired with Japanese rice wine (sake), elderflower liqueur, and homemade ginger syrup is shaken and served up as a Ginger Bloom. And then there is Purple Haze, which boasts a psychedelic purple color made from butterfly pea flowerinfused gin, lavender, and lemon juice — it might just make you sing “‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky!”

Now since you are saving on airfare and hotel accommodations, Indochine is the perfect place to have a special celebration and impress your guests with stunning decor and rich aromas. “We are adept at accommodating many various sizes of groups, event types (weddings, corporate meetings, birthdays, retirements, etc.), and even budgets. Our food service is family style and this helps us provide a great variety at a reasonable price,” notes owner Russel Brunton. For small intimate gatherings, you might be interested in the Tatami Room. Dating back to 6th century Japan, tatami rooms were named after tatami mats, traditional woven mats of rice straw. Originally, only the nobility could afford tatami rooms which are meant to generate a calm, peaceful state of mind. In modern Japan, tatami rooms are used to entertain guests or conduct tea ceremonies. If you have a larger group, you can select from the Thai House, which is part of the main dining area and seats up to 25, or the unique Banquet Room which is adorned with Victorian chandeliers and metal artwork. Both offer unique and magnificent surroundings which are certain to create lasting memories. If you are marking a special occasion with family and friends, or planning a company gathering, Indochine has you covered with exceptional cocktails, a delicious menu, and a beautiful dining experience. vHILLARY RYAN

DILLANOS COFFEE ROASTERS

Help People. Make Friends. Have Fun!

DINING

“Consistency in your coffee roasting is the most important element to successful results,” according to Director of Coffee and Green Coffee Buyer, Phillip Beattie. Beattie purchases coffee from 28 countries including Brazil and Guatemala to create their three lines of coffee. Their revered lines include Classics, Harvest (which ensures Fair Trade practices), and Limited (uses high-end or unusual coffee seeds for the true coffee geek). Coffee is actually created from the seed of a fruit; it is not a bean.

When your core mission statement includes “Have Fun!” you know the culture of your business is going to be special. After 30 years in the coffee industry, brothers Chris Heyer and David Morris have certainly created something special at Dillanos Coffee Roasters. Located in Sumner, Dillanos roasts specialty coffee brands with more than 1,600 wholesale locations serving their coffee around the country. They also retail their coffee blends from the lobby of their roasting facility. Beautifully designed by Julie Heyer, wife of Chris, the lobby and the

rest of the building showcase a cool Northwest vibe that pulls out the fun through design touches like the words of their mission statement adhered on the lobby tasting countertops. There are jigsaw puzzles on coffee tables and TV’s on the walls throughout the facility celebrating the birthdays of their employees that month. Supporting award-winning local baristas in national and international competitions over the years is a point of pride for the Dillanos team made up of more than 110 enthusiastic and educated on “all-things-coffee” employees. Past barista winners have used Dillanos blends in traditional competitions as well as Coffee and Good Spirits contests.

Dillanos is an invaluable resource for local coffee stands and small shops wanting full-service product delivery. Of course, they provide fresh, roasted-to-order coffee, but Dillanos also delivers everything a coffee operation would need, from cups and lids to syrups and equipment. They even research and develop their own syrup flavors in-house and sell them under their own brand, Barista Twenty Two. Stop by Dillanos’ roasting facility at 1620 45th Street East in Sumner to pick up their latest roasted coffee selections including Dillons Limited, created to celebrate DCR’s 30th Anniversary. vLYNN CASTLE Dillanos Coffee Roasters dillanos.com

WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY MUSEUM

Two Exhibitions This Fall

Two exciting and colorful exhibitions will delight visitors of all ages at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma this fall. In Meigs’ words, “In a sense, aloha shirts put Hawaii on the map. The first thing people did when they arrived was make a beeline for a department store to buy one . . . I always tried to be a purist when it came to using motifs from Hawaiian sources.” Art of the Aloha Shirt was curated by Dale Hope, a Hawaiian native and second generation veteran of the garment industry, and organized by ExhibitsUSA, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance.

Art of the Aloha Shirt: Keoni of Hawaii, 1938–51 is on view through September 11, exploring the history, artistry, and production of Hawaii’s enduring fashion statement, the aloha shirt. See original design sketches and paintings, fabric swatches, and beautiful vintage shirts while you learn the story of John “Keoni” Meigs (“Keoni” is Hawaiian for John). Although the exact origins of the aloha shirt are unknown, there has been no more innovative merchandiser than Keoni of Hawaii. Meigs was a self-taught painter whose talent inspired the early shirt manufacturers in Honolulu. In 1938, he created his first designs, concentrating on Polynesian tapa patterns inspired by the originals he had studied at the local Bishop Museum.

Beginning October 6, leap into the magical world of animation with a traveling show from Stage Nine Entertainment Group! There’s a sound experience where you can listen to audio effects in a traditional cartoon too. Washington State History Museum washingtonhistory.org
