comfort and style meet for the perfect fit at sole perfection When shopping for the perfect pair of shoes, two criteria are often at the top of any shoe shopper’s list: comfort and style. The perfect shoe not only fits well and comfortably carries you through a busy day, but does so without compromising your personal style. Great shoes allow for both, and shoppers seeking the perfect fit will find what they are looking for at Sole Perfection.

Sole Perfection provides a personal and relaxed approach to comfort footwear shopping, for both men and women, that cannot be found anywhere else in the region. “We are all about the customer service. Shoes just happen to be what we sell,” says Debbie Ketterer, owner. “We will spend an hour with one customer to ensure they have their needs met,” she says.

Focusing on healthy feet has been the goal from the start for this independent and locally owned business. With five convenient locations serving the greater Puget Sound area,

Foot conditions can wreak havoc on daily life and compromise our day from the moment we step out of bed. Foot pain is not something to be taken lightly. Fortunately, proper footwear and arch support can provide immense relief. At Sole Perfection, customers will find an extensive selection offered in stores from high-quality brands like Brooks, Dansko and Algeria, along with products like Superfeet arch supports, FootStride Technology and Spenco insoles to help combat chronic problems such as low arches and plantar fasciitis. Finding the perfect fit starts with measuring the foot and identifying any key problems that might cause discomfort. Using a custom fitting process and digital foot scanning system, highly trained professionals help ensure that customers discover a pair of shoes that meets the needs of their busy lifestyle. Whether for a 10-hour workday, long distance runs or every day, customers leave with the shoe that is right for them knowing they have had star treatment. Sole Perfection takes great pride in helping customers find products that will truly enhance their life. vANDREA LERUM Everett, Federal Way, Seattle, Shoreline and Tacoma soleperfectionshoes.com

seldens designer home furnishings—celebrating 75 years of interior style in the puget sound area This year marks the 75th anniversary for Seldens Designer Home Furnishings, a staple of the Puget Sound business scene since April 1940. What started as a floor covering business by Syd Selden has evolved into a furniture destination for homeowners and businesses in the region. The growth and evolution of the company can best be attributed to one constant: the customers. “We are always listening to our customers’ feedback,” says Jake Cross, general manager and fourth-generation Selden. “We try not to get stuck in our ways by constantly looking ahead to what the customer wants.” Staying family-owned and operated, Cross says, has allowed the company to remain agile to make key merchan-

dise decisions, keeping customers at the forefront. Dazzling showrooms provide no shortage of stylish options including fashion-forward pieces by Four Hands and the extraordinary wood craftsmanship of Stickley furniture. To offer its services to a larger audience, Seldens has expanded its e-commerce presence. Customers can now shop, customize and order furniture online. Once the order is delivered, Seldens’ in-home service includes setting up the new and rearranging existing pieces, plus providing guidance to customers on items that require operational instruction. Seldens also follows up after a delivery to ensure the experience was “outstanding,” says Cross. Seldens recently purchased Bellevue-based Masins Fine Furnishings and Interior Design. The sale will be finalized this summer, with David Masin, president of Masins, staying on to manage the 25,000-square-foot Bellevue location. Says Scott Selden, CEO: “The Selden family is looking forward to carrying on the great reputation and legacy the Masins have built over the last 88 years in the King County market. We are very excited to have the ability to expand into the Seattle-Bellevue area with a vast array of high-end home furnishings.” Showcase Magazine congratulates Seldens on its achievements and wishes the company many more years of continued success! vANDREA LERUM

fournier insurance solutions Founded in Montesano, Washington, in 1977, Fournier Insurance Solutions started in a bedroom and then it became an office. A former teacher and coach, founder Dick Fournier understood from the beginning the value of trust his clients placed in his hands. This duty of responsibility, he says, has never waned. In the nearly four decades since, Fournier Insurance Solutions has grown to 30 employees in five South Puget Sound offices: Montesano, Chehalis, Gig Harbor, University Place, and Bremerton. While FiS currently serves clients in all 50 states, its primary focus and vision is to be the premier insurance agency in the South Puget Sound. It proudly remains local with offices where its clients live and work. This is not by accident. Its clients like to know the people who are handling their insurance needs. In ShowCase Magazine’s recent reader poll, Fournier Insurance Solutions was voted “Best Insurance Company” in the

South Sound. Says Ryan Fournier, president: “We are so honored to receive this recognition. Our success is 100 percent attributable to our talented and hard-working team who demonstrate our core values every day: customer service, advice/advocacy, relationships and education.” Living by the motto “whatever you need we can find a solution” has earned FiS a reputation for excellence, says Ryan Fournier. “It is being the best at the simple things that has allowed us to be the agency of choice.” vLEAH GROUT MONTESANO • 100 West Marcy • 360.249.5609 UNIVERSITY PLACE • 5712 Orchard St W • 253.473.3010 GIG HARBOR • 3111 Harborview Dr • 253.851.3323 BREMERTON • 629 Warren Ave • 360.373.4100 CHEHALIS • 65 South Market St • 360.748.9496 fourniersolutions.com

capital medical center celebrates 30 years in thurston county Capital Medical Center has turned 30. Founded in 1985 by a small group of physicians seeking to expand health care for women, the hospital today is that and much more. Capital’s CEO, Jim Geist, says he is always surprised when he finds someone who is unaware that Capital Medical Center is a hospital. “It may come from the perception that a community hospital is less than full service,” he said. In fact, Capital is a full-service, accredited hospital and Level IV trauma facility providing critical 24-hour emergency care to residents of Southwest Washington. Dr. Angela Bowen, a retired endocrinologist, was one of the founding physicians of the hospital. “I think it’s a friendlier place, not as big and busy and kind of impersonal as a much bigger hospital. The quality of doctors that practice at Capital makes me very comfortable. You can get most anything you need done there.”

Approval—one of the first in the state—to Capital’s Joint & Spine Center in 2013. Capital Medical Center’s growing impact is widely felt in the community. Over the past five years, the hospital has provided more than $52 million in charity and uncompensated care, including nearly $375,000 in donations to community service organizations. One of those was the Olympia Free Clinic, which recently received a $3,500 donation from Capital and its employees after the hospital selected the clinic to receive the proceeds of a monthly “Jeans Day” campaign. The hospital will mark its 30th anniversary with a variety of events during the year. vLEAH GROUT capitalmedical.com

Since 2005, Capital has invested over $32 million in new technologies and facilities. In keeping with its original mission, the hospital recently completed a $1.5 million renovation of its women’s services unit, including newly remodeled private birthing suites and an upgraded family waiting area. Slated to begin later this year is a $16.3 million expansion and renovation of the hospital’s surgical services department. That will include seven state-of-the-art operating suites to accommodate the rising demand from patients and to better meet the needs of surgeons. In a nod to the hospital’s excellence, The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading health care accreditation organization, awarded its Gold Seal of

swing wine bar Eight years ago Swing opened its vineyard-chic doors in a historic bungalow perched above sweeping Capitol Lake with views of the Cascades. When owner Nicole Butigan had first spotted the site, she’d pictured the views as the perfect setting for a wine bar—one type of dining venue Olympia was lacking at the time. Not only did she bring this dream to life, but today it’s more energized than ever with the buzz of diners who adore its cozy European ambiance and top-notch drinks and cuisine. Upon arrival you see the swanky, warmly lit glass mosaic bar, where in-the-know servers pour more than 60 wines by the glass and 200 bottle selections. You can enjoy your sips here, at the bar’s close-set tables, on the summer patio or down in the spacious, party-friendly cellar. Bring friends for wine flights and experiment with sparkling wines, white flights, organic wines and top regional reds, European tastes, and the spirits included in the appropriately named “I’ll Drink My Dessert, Thank You” flight. Even if you don’t imbibe, you can indulge in the delicious food, in sampling or sharing portions. Try the Jarlsberg caraway fondue, truffled popcorn, Thai peanut wraps, chèvre toast points, or Gorgonzola-stuffed mushrooms. Dinners are simply cooked and beautifully arranged. Beecher’s rustic chicken is smothered in a white cheddar sauce and served with the perfect comfort side dish of a creamy potato mash. Desserts, ranging from cold to flaming depending on the season, are on par with both drinks and main courses. Along with romantic touches such as quiet tables for two, candlelit corners, fresh flowers and abundant warm woods, you can enjoy your wine and food with the mellow backdrop of live jazz every Wednesday. Swing’s Euro-cool, flirty yet familial ambiance makes conversation flow easily and drinks pair simply. In short, life has a little more flair while you’re dining at Swing. vHOLLY SMITH PETERSON

asian fusion: olympia’s lemon grass restaurants The hippest trio of dining spots in the Olympia area, the upscale Asian-fusion Lemon Grass restaurants, started with owner Nicole Pham’s passion for cooking and dedication to seizing every opportunity. It’s your opportunity to dig into food that’s truly special in standout ways. The menu winds through an array of familiar Thai dishes, but it’s immediately clear that the flavors are diverse. Arousing all five senses, Pham’s dynamic food is art at its tastiest. The original Lemon Grass opened in downtown Olympia in 1998, followed by the cozy Lemon Grass Cafe in Tumwater in 2010. In 2013 the large, luxurious Lemon Grass Restaurant and Lounge opened in Lacey. At all three, the decor, ambiance and cuisine are the same: chic, classy, comfortable. Sleek, dark Thai teak meets shimmering glass; the feel is relaxing and intimate. The showpiece in each location is the bar, backlit and framed by eye-catching glass art. A cocktail here, a work of art in its own right, transports your mindset into the most luxe bar in Bangkok. The food is sheer beauty, each dish artfully plated in a decoupage of natural colors. From the fresh aroma and taste, it’s clear that Pham’s dedication to sourcing from the best regional Asian markets makes her food a standout among many Thai restaurants in the region. Go-to favorites meander from steaming lime-infused Tom Yum Gai and tangy shrimp mango salad to chewy Singapore and milky-rich chicken apple curry. Appetizers range from grilled Thai peanut prawns to the cold-plated spring rolls. Desserts are all winners, although the strong, sweet Thai coffee curbs the craving for both sugar and caffeine. vHOLLY SMITH PETERSON

mama stortini’s—italian flair meets northwest fresh When it comes to Italian spots, Mama Stortini’s has remained a Puget Sound staple year after year. With locations in Puyallup, Kent and Seattle, this local favorite continues to develop great classic cuisine. Fresh ingredients coupled with extensive options mean there is no shortage of flavors for diners to explore. Classic pasta dishes are offered in a mixand-match fashion, allowing guests the flexibility to choose their own type of pasta, such as capellini or linguine; pair it with a sauce, such as garlic Alfredo or tomato cream; and add delicious toppings such as sautéed mushrooms and roasted Tuscan-style meatballs. Other staples including tortellini au gratin and baked ziti Bolognese grace the menu as well. No Italian restaurant menu would be complete without pizza, and the thin-crust pizzas found at Mama Stortini’s will not disappoint. They’re baked in an old-world brick oven and inspired by Italy’s Ristorante La Sacrestia. The Meat Classic is Mama’s favorite and touts four meats: salami, Canadian bacon, pepperoni and sausage. Guests seeking an after-work reprieve will enjoy the extensive happy hour selections, filled with various small-plate options like baked mac and cheese, caramelized onion flatbread and grilled chicken skewers served aside warm pita bread. Of course there is a wide selection of signature beverages to choose from. Try a Mama’s Dirty Martini or a new specialty cocktail like a Ginger Manhattan: house-infused ginger whiskey and bitters. Happy hour runs daily from 3 to 6 p.m., 8:30 p.m. to close, and all day Sunday. The ambiance is casual, friendly and very comfortable, allowing for an enjoyable dining experience.

Whether for your very first visit or the second time this week, stop in and discover why Mama Stortini’s continues to remain a Puget Sound favorite. vANDREA LERUM PUYALLUP • 3207 East Main Ave • 253.845.7569 KENT • 240 West Kent Station St • 253.854.5050 mamastortinis.com

ricardo’s restaurant Born and raised in Lacey, Rick Nelson first acquired his passion for food while bussing tables at his grandfather’s beloved local pizza parlor, Dirty Dave’s. The Timberline High School grad developed foodie traction at the Olympia Farmers Market. This was followed by stints as sous chef at Genoa’s on

the Bay and at the iconic Italian hub, Mama Stortini’s. Partnering with his mother in 2003, he opened the pasta restaurant Ricardo’s. Its cozy, casual ambiance attracted a broad fan base and has progressed into one of the Puget Sound area’s most highly regarded steakhouses. For both first and longtime diners, the entire experience—from relaxing atmosphere, to edgy original tastes and top-notch ingredients, to first-rate, friendly service—is simply brilliant. Guests will find a happy hour menu from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with popular bites like Ricardo Sliders with blue cheese and tomatoes, jumbo mesquite-grilled prawns, and prime rib dips. A savvy choice of area wines and brews and specialty drinks like the ginger-infused Perfect Redhead complete the happy hour options. For dinner, the restaurant’s specialty dry-aged beef cuts plus selections such as truffle chicken, peppered ahi tuna, mesquite-grilled lamb rack on gremolata-crusted polenta, and fresh, buttery breadcrumb-topped Dungeness crab mac and cheese invite culinary experimentation. Taunting desserts—gooey chocolate “Not Soufflé,” the vanilla bean-infused root beer float, tangy cheesecake, fresh wild berry crisp, and mini-bites of tiramisu, crème brûlée, chocolates and sorbets—live up to all expectations. And portions are ample enough for sharing.

This fall the restaurant will be expanding to a new location to meet the needs of its ever-growing fan base in the South Sound. Meat lovers need only make reservations to experience Ricardo’s themselves. vHOLLY SMITH PETERSON 5211 Lacey Blvd SE, Lacey 360.413.9995 chefricardo.com

indochine downtown dining—chic, exotic asian fusion From the moment you enter Indochine, you feel as though you have been transported to an exotic locale. The indoor water feature fills an unassuming fish pond surrounded by rich wooden tables and benches. Warm lighting and Asianinspired décor help set the mood. And an open floor plan invites guests to interact with one another, perhaps asking “What did you get?” as a server brings out a particularly beautiful cocktail from the bar. While the ambiance is certainly sought after, it is the food that keeps guests returning time and time again. Known for its fusion of all Asian cuisines, Indochine creates dishes that are inspired by Thai, Chinese and even Northwest cultures. One Indochine favorite, the calamari, is battered, fried and then wok-tossed with various spices. This interpretation is requested by guests over and over.

An attentive and knowledgeable staff greets you at the door and answers questions about the current menu, potential wine pairings and popular cocktails. The environment seen in the front of the house is echoed in the kitchen, where staff members are always experimenting with new ideas. “We have quite a few ethnic backgrounds in our kitchen and it really shows in the amazing food we put out every day,” says Bergstrom. She notes that all of the desserts are handmade each day, ensuring a fresh ending to each amazing meal. Perfect for date night, banquet parties or a late lunch, Indochine offers something for all palates and preferences. vANDREA LERUM 1924 Pacific Ave, Tacoma 253.272.8200 indochinedowntown.com

Each menu item is carefully constructed by the chefs to be not only delicious but visually stunning, says Becca Bergstrom, assistant manager. “There is a lot of heart and soul on these plates,” she says. Gluten-free options are available too.

northwest trek—celebrating 40 years as a puget sound favorite Close encounters with animals like caribou, bison and elk are just a drive away. This summer, Northwest Trek celebrates 40 years of wildlife fun in the Puget Sound. What started as a dream of two wildlife lovers, David T. “Doc” and Connie Hellyer, has become a beloved destination for animal lovers and adventure seekers alike. Drawing people from all over the globe, Northwest Trek strives to educate visitors about nature and its inhabitants. Conservation has been key in providing these ongoing opportunities by creating an environment where animals roam free, as if they were truly in the wild. Park visitors can board the tram and take a naturalist-narrated tour of the 735-acre wildlife park through the free-roaming area. Walking paths also offer an up-close look at the animals as they graze, nap and play. Activities such as Animal Trailside Encounters and interactive experiences in the Cheney Discovery Center can enhance every visit with hands-on learning.

Those seeking more adventure can challenge their mental and physical stamina on a series of zip line and aerial obstacle courses. Visitors from age five to adult can choose courses from a few feet off the ground to an exhilarating eight stories soaring into the canopy. Overnight camping is offered throughout the summer months for those wishing to truly immerse themselves in the unique wilderness experience found at the park. To make the most of your visit, be sure to plan ahead since activities vary throughout the year and additional tickets may be required. Spend a day with the wildlife of Northwest Trek and find out what makes this destination a longtime Puget Sound favorite! vANDREA LERUM 11610 Trek Dr E, Eatonville 360.832.6117 nwtrek.org

summer fun at lemay – america’s car museum This summer, exciting things await Puget Sound car lovers at LeMay – America’s Car Museum. Throughout the summer there will be day camps, a superior muscle car exhibit and more, meaning visitors will need more than one day to soak it all in!

Anyone wishing to learn more about their favorite classic autos will not want to miss “If Cars Could Talk,” a brown-bag series that dives into the history of one particular vehicle. Attendees will get a glimpse into the history of one car, selected by the speaker, over lunch provided by the museum.

Have you always wanted to race a car to see if you have what it takes to be the best? If so, you’ll be able to test your skills against other drivers during Race Nights at ACM, on the second Thursday of every month from 5 to 8 p.m. CXC racing stimulators will provide the thrill of racing on famous tracks like Daytona and Darlington. Drive solo or put a team together and race on.

One of the biggest exhibits to hit ACM is American Muscle: Rivals to the End, featuring coveted cars like a 1969 427 Yenko Camaro and a 1970 Dodge Super Bee. “To highlight this incredible time of American history, the museum is going to display ‘halo’ cars from all of the major American brands,” says ACM President and CEO David Madeira. Enthusiasts will be in awe of this sensational collection, he says. vANDREA LERUM

Kids 8 to 15 years old can sign up for a Race Into Summer camp. This weeklong course immerses soon-to-be drivers into a world behind the wheel, all before their first driver’s ed course. Better hide the keys, Mom and Dad!
