WHO WE ARE We are proud to be a family-owned store that has grown from the imagination of Tony, Mabeth and Sherry Grout into one of the largest home furnishings stores on the West Coast today. We have become what we are today because of you, our customers, our neighbors and friends. Because of your loyalty to us and your continued support, we are able to offer an unusual, if not unique, way to shop for home furnishings. As the company name suggests, the store is housed in a former cannery, where fruit from Eastern Washington was packed and canned. And it has other draws besides its historical setting. How many furniture stores have a fudge factory hewn from an ancient tree right in the middle of their store? How many have seven miles of suspended G scale trains, reminiscent of days gone by, that travel through the showrooms and warehouse? These are just a few of the unique things about The Old Cannery that make it a wonderful place to visit for your furniture needs and for the enjoyment of your entire family. We invite you to come and experience it for yourself and become a part of our family, as so many others have done. We want to continue to thank you every time you visit us by offering you a unique experience and great value. We are constantly striving to help make our community a better place to live and shop.

Thank you, The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse 13608 Cannery Way Sumner, WA 98390 253.863.0422 oldcannery.com

THE MILL HOUSE COLLECTION The Mill House collection reaches back to our roots and highlights the old techniques utilized during the early days of American furniture making. During those times, craftsman were limited to solid lumbers and the materials they had, and they used techniques that were functional and visible to construct the furniture they built. The furniture itself was built with a form-follows-function perspective which resulted in pieces that were inherently well made. Due to the use of those varying resources and the purposes for each piece, this led to a sort of unintended eclectic style which, ironically, is popular today. Dimensions: 64H x 63W x 86.5L

EASTBURN BED The Eastburn Bed might be the centerpiece that your bedroom is missing. It has a scale that suits a master bedroom while its casual lines and natural solid wood character create a calming tone. A subtle curve creates definition across the individual solid pine boards allowing a view into its Old World construction. Dimensions 64H x 66W x 92.75D

THE PLANK ROAD BEDROOM COLLECTION BY KINCAID Inspired by the rugged solid wood roads that America traveled, Plank Road is a tribute to the sturdy resolve that is our heritage. Every solid wood board presents its own personality while playing a part in the broader story. Avoiding unnecessary embellishments, the beauty of the furniture’s construction is enough. The collection features a casual, organic style that blends modern and vintage design influences with the natural character of solid wood furniture.

Virtual Walk Raises Funds for Breast Health Programs by

Julie L eydelmeyer

As the first Saturday in October dawned in Sumner last year, something was missing—the sea of pink that normally fills downtown each year. But that didn’t stop more than 480 virtual Come Walk With Me participants and numerous event sponsors from raising $88,000 to support breast health programs at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital.

Resources and services include a handbook for those newly diagnosed, cooling caps to help reduce hair loss during chemotherapy, and access to specially tailored exercise and nutrition classes. To help detect breast cancer early, screening mammograms are provided regardless of a woman’s ability to pay.

In 2020, Come Walk With Me—Pierce County’s largest breast cancer walk—transitioned to primarily being an online event due to COVID-19 precautions. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so we used the new virtual format to enhance the event and engage with participants throughout the month on social media,” explained Lynn Miller, MultiCare Foundation’s event manager. This included education about the importance of early detection and sharing stories about survivors, in addition to virtual versions of the annual pinkest pet, bedazzled bra, and team fundraising competitions. Walkers chose when and where to walk, and team walking was encouraged with appropriate social distancing.

Join The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse on the first Saturday of October in supporting Come Walk With Me and breast cancer patients across Pierce County! Learn more online at www.comewalkwithmenow.org.

In “normal” years, The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse is an event partner and serves as a festive and energetic starting point for the walk, so they couldn’t let this year go by without a little fanfare. In addition to being the designated pickup point for the event’s t-shirts, they decked the pennant tree in pink and on kickoff day still served as the gathering place for those walkers who wanted to keep the tradition going. Since its inception, Come Walk With Me has raised more than $1 million and 100 percent of these funds stay in the community to provide free and reduced-fee services related to the detection and treatment of breast cancer.

NW Furniture Bank by

Julie L eydelmeyer

Planning for the unexpected can be easier said than done, as we’ve been reminded during the last year the pandemic took hold of the nation. For clients of NW Furniture Bank, a nonprofit providing basic home furnishings to those in need, this couldn’t be more true. Among the more than 1200 client families served in 2020 by their two locations in Tacoma and Vancouver, many are rebuilding their lives and homes after a significant, life-changing event, such as domestic violence, a fire or natural disaster, or transitioning from homelessness. “We help families to furnish homes that have little or nothing in them,” explained Jeremy Simler, Director of Development for NW Furniture Bank. “We hope this provides hope, dignity and stability as they work to rebuild their lives.” At a minimum, each client family selects a sofa, dining set, and bed for each person. Depending on the donations received each week, accent furniture or housewares are often available. Like many organizations, NW Furniture Bank temporarily closed its doors when stay-at-home orders were first issued, but they remained committed to finding ways to help their clients, and so did donors. “This has been the most humbling year in terms of people’s graciousness,” reflected Simler. Local furniture and mattress stores continued to provide considerable support by donating excess inventory and useable returned items. The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse has been a major contributor since the beginning and that didn’t change during the pandemic. Individual donors also rallied to support the need in the community. Donations can be made through their website, where you can also find a list of furniture and

housewares accepted at both locations. Additionally, you can shop their retail storefronts to furnish your own home or recycle your mattress and boxspring, which they will disassemble and sell to recyclers. These companion business ventures help to fund the purchase of items in high demand by families. “This is the straightest line to make a difference in the community,” says Bill Lemke, Executive Director and founder. “With either a furniture or monetary donation, you’ll help someone with nothing get off the floor and into a place to sit, eat, or sleep.” For more information: NW Furniture Bank 117 Puyallup Ave, Tacoma 253.302.3868 1600 Washington St., Vancouver, WA 360.787.7144 nwfurniturebank.org

Virtual Corks & Crush by

Emily Happy

Attendees did not gather in-person, but donors at a virtual Corks & Crush raised $407,000 for COVID-19 research at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital this year as they toasted health and healing.

designated to participate in research trials, doctors gave Brian plasma transfusions and the drug remdesivir. After 26 days in the hospital, Brian was released, greeted by carefully masked cheering friends and neighbors.

Participants set up their own homes for the party, tasted wines and food and participated in live auction bidding for wine packages, cruises and other donations.

“This grabs me by the heartstrings, to know that people care,” Brian said. The Corks & Crush virtual crowd hosted by the Good Samaritan Foundation cared to the tune of $407,000, partly motivated by Brian’s story of treatment and recovery.

Inspiration for the giving came from a short video about Tammy and Brian Edwards. It’s a dramatic story of community care. Tammy is a registered nurse in the birthing unit at MultiCare’s Good Samaritan. She and her husband, Brian, both contracted COVID-19. They cared for each other at home until Brian said, “Call 911. I can’t breathe.” Brian spent 11 days on a ventilator and came within hours of dying. Because MultiCare hospitals in the area are

“I thank the community for their donations for research, and I hope they continue to do so,” said Tammy. “The amazing doctors and nurses of MultiCare need your help.” Corks & Crush gives donors the chance to have a good time—even if it’s virtual. The results can be life-saving. “We need to pull together and do this for the greater good,” Tammy said. “We need to take care of each other.”

5 Home Trends for 2021 by

Emily Happy

Tis the season for soup simmering on the stove and festive indoor gatherings with family and friends. Get your home and hearth ready with these design tips and trends gathered from industry experts. Time for a new decade, spruced up décor and a happier, healthier you!

spaces. Home meets work meets art studio (or gym!) The boundaries between different parts of our lives are disappearing, and the spaces we live in can take the transformation to the next level.

TEXTURE ARCHITECTURE OF LIFE Grab the dictionary: a hot new trend (that may be here to stay) is “biophilic design”—otherwise known as the “architecture of life.” Connect to the natural environment through materials, colors, windows and lighting, and a decluttered space that instills peace. Then reap the benefits—health, atmospheric and economic (consider your property values raised).

LUXURY + SUSTAINABILITY With design finishes leaning organic and sustainable materials all the rage, enter a beautiful combination of sustainability and luxury. Indulgent products are being crafted with everything from recycled fishing nets to old carpets. You no longer need to choose between style and conscience. Everyone wins!

Whether monochromatic or bold and bright, natural organic fiber or rich velvet, texture brings a space to life. This is especially true with the resurgence of Bohemian style, groovy retro 50s-60s-70s upholstery trends, and cultural prints that inspire your next journey.

NATURAL COLORS Create a sanctuary with color. Biophilic design found its way into the Colors of the Year for 2020. Saturated darks and subtle lights all have something in common—a connection to nature. Sherwin-Williams’ “Naval” is meant to “bring joy, serenity and focus to the mind, body and spirit.” A delicate complement is Valspar’s “Mint Whisper.” Sue Kim, Valspar color marketing manager shared, “Our everyday world can be chaotic and overwhelming, but we continue to create an environment to find retreat and balance in our lives.”

MULTI-USE SPACES Open-concept is nothing new. But consider multi-use for a new way of life. Kitchens meet dining meet social

The Cannery and Sumner Rotary Transform Lives at Home and Abroad by

K elly L enihan

The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse has been a mainstay in the Sumner community for decades. If there is a community event taking place, chances are The Cannery was integral to planning, donating space, sponsoring, or participating in the event. Although The Cannery lends a helping hand to many local charitable groups, its ongoing commitment of support falls right in line with the Sumner Rotary’s own mission: “Care about our community and eagerly seek opportunities to better the lives of those around us.”

Rotary Club of Sumner has been a fixture in the Sumner community for 90 years. To learn more about this community service organization, visit the club any Tuesday at noon and enjoy lunch, fellowship, and service above self at Brank’s BBQ. For more information: Brank’s BBQ 13701 24th St East, Sumner rotaryclubofsumner.org

“The Cannery’s support and sponsorship means more than a logo on a sign at a Rotary event: It means a commitment to caring for people here in Sumner and around the world.” ~Carmen Palmer Many people don’t realize the reach Sumner Rotary has both at home and around the world. Here in our community, the club gave a leadership gift to help build the Gordon Family YMCA in Sumner, now enjoyed by over 20,000 members of all ages keeping healthy. At the same time, the “International” part of “Rotary International” is also a key component. The club continues to partner with Team Agape, founded by Sumnerite Sarah Rolfing and her husband, Jamie. In the past that partnership has included building bathrooms for a low-income school in Kenya. Now the project is expanding to funding an offroad Jeep to function as a mobile health clinic to the villages around the town of Magadi in Kenya. As The Old Cannery continues to be a leader in supporting Sumner Rotary and its various events, whether that’s Girls Night Out, the annual gala, or the golf tournament, these are the results of those efforts.

Operation Turkey Drop for the Troops by

Emily Happy

Operation Turkey Drop strikes again—a heartfelt event that lets the community offer thanks to junior-enlisted military families. For 10 years, the Old Cannery has collaborated with the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) and community groups to provide holiday hams and Thanksgiving turkeys for families at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). “Being away from home and family traditions is tough no matter what age you are,” said Isabella Colvin of the local AUSU chapter, “but receiving a gift of a turkey from the community you serve is a tangible reminder that you are part of a bigger picture.” Delivery of the turkeys is quite a production. The Old Cannery provides a truck and team of volunteers, with Dave Radcliffe traditionally serving as driver. “A caravan of volunteers follows the truck, using a list to distribute the turkeys to locations on the base,” Colvin explained. “Volunteers hand off the correct number of turkeys at each location and thank the military personnel.” “It’s been fun!” exclaimed Jackie Walls of the Old Cannery. “People need ‘attaboys,’ and Old Cannery and community donations give us a chance to give back and to honor service members and their families.”

44 OLDCANNERY.COM

Colvin added, “The best part is greeting the service members with a big smile and an entourage of community partners and volunteers who are excited to contribute to their JBLM holiday experience.” Time exchanging turkeys also offers time for service members to talk about their own family holiday traditions, Colvin said, “letting us be part of their 2020 holiday memories.” Funds raised throughout the year by the Cannery and other donors help support projects sponsored by AUSA at JBLM. The biggest events are Operation Turkey Drop at Thanksgiving and Ham Grenade in December. To get involved, visit the Facebook page of the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter of the AUSA.

Arranging Your Furniture for Entertaining by

A ndrea L erum

Design the perfect party space with multiple seating areas that encourage conversation and flow. A handful of things are really important for throwing a good party — music, lighting, food, drink, and of course, good company — but all of these are secondary to good room flow.

DOWNPLAY THE TV

The best parties are the ones where there are lots of places for wandering, for hanging out, for intimate conversations and for talking to new people. Your house might not be laid out for entertaining on a daily basis, but you can always rearrange the furniture to make it more party-friendly.

COMMUNAL SEATING

INTIMACY

Back-to-back sofas with a skinny sofa table in between also works with contemporary styling.

When you have a large space, it’s important to place the furniture in small groups to create a sense of intimacy. A good rule of thumb is to not set furniture so far apart that you have to lean in across the coffee table to hear the person you’re talking to.

MULTIPLE SEATING AREAS Furniture arrangement can be challenging but having double seating areas are great for creating areas for conversation. Use rugs to clearly define each space. We love two sofas that are placed back-to-back to create two seating areas. Most people think they don’t have the space for this, but give it a try; you might be surprised.

46 OLDCANNERY.COM

Even if your living room or family room usually has the furniture laid out for television viewing, think about moving it around for a party. Ignore the TV and arrange furniture for conversation.

With back-to-back sofas in a larger space, there’s also room for a sofa table in between them. It’s perfect for communal seating where everyone might not know each other, which also makes it perfect for entertaining.

CIRCULATION PATH If you don’t have the room for two seating areas with sofas, try placing a few armchairs at one end of the space and the sofa with additional chairs at the other. Create a clear circulation path from the front door. There are so many ways to think about arranging furniture for entertaining, get creative with your space and you might even find you prefer your living room laid out this way all the time.

Boush Moving and Storage— Peace of Mind Delivered by

A ndrea L erum

Anyone who has ever shopped for furniture knows how time-consuming it can be. From choosing color and fabric to ensuring that measurements are correct, there is much to consider. You don’t want to have to fret about delivery. You can’t exactly fit an eight-piece dining room set and wraparound sofa in the back of an SUV. Even if you could, the prospect of getting the pieces into your home without serious damage looms large. For customers of the Old Cannery, however, delivery of their beloved new furniture is the last thing on their minds. When receiving their furniture delivery, customers are greeted warmly and their home is prepped as if for a full move, before the new furniture is even taken off the truck. Haul-away service for old furniture is also available. Boush Moving and Storage has provided delivery services for Old Cannery Furniture customers for about seven years, but their shared history goes back much further. Located in downtown Puyallup, Boush has been in business since 1919 in the Puyallup community. Boush and the Cannery began working together in the mid-1900s when R.F. Boush would haul produce from the Puyallup Valley to the Cannery when it was in the business of canning. Since then, Boush has grown and the relationship with the Cannery has endured. It is a relationship the two companies hope will continue for generations to come. “We provide our customers with first-rate service. We want them to enjoy the experience,” says Bruce Ellis,
