spotlight | audra mcdonald This fall Broadway Center for the Performing Arts welcomes Tony and Grammy Award-winning performer Audra McDonald to the stage for a performance you will not want to miss. Both a gifted actress and singer with a stellar soprano voice, McDonald has dazzled on Broadway and television alike. We caught up with the dynamic star to find out more about what makes her shine. vANDREA LERUM FROM WHOM DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION?

I look to the great women who came before me, including Ruby Dee, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Maya Angelou and Diahann Carroll. Zoe Caldwell is also a huge inspiration. I learned so much from her when we worked together in a Master Class. She is my friend and mentor and I always look to her for advice. WHAT CONTINUES TO BE YOUR FAVORITE PART OF PERFORMING?

There’s nothing quite like the experience of live performance—there’s a visceral thrill that you can’t get anywhere else. You get a kind of immediate feedback when performing in front of a live audience that you don’t get shooting for television or film. I’m most fulfilled when I feel like there’s been a connection with the audience— something shared, something learned and something received. I want people to feel like they are in my living room and vice versa. HOW DO YOU CONTINUE TO EVOLVE PROFESSIONALLY?

images by autumn de wilde

I am constantly trying to evolve and become a better actress, so I am always learning from my past characters. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT BOTH PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY?

My daughter, Zoe, is by far my most gratifying accomplishment. As for my career, singing and acting were my passions as a kid and I just wanted to be on the Broadway For additional information: stage. Everything that has happened since my Broadway de- broadwaycenter.org but has totally surpassed my dreams. audramcdonald.net

, rolf s import auto service-a family legacy Since 1970, Rolf’s Import Auto Service has been providing automotive care in the South Sound. Founded by Rolf Simons, a German immigrant, the company began as a small shop providing general services. “We have been a part of the community for a long time,” says Mark Simons, current owner and son of the founder. Having taken over the business from his father in 2006, the younger Simons is focusing on growth and community outreach. He says that Rolf’s continues to provide the same level of care to its customers as it always has, specializing in the repair and maintenance of imports such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, with locations in Fife and Lakewood.

Rolf’s offers a rewards card program to loyal customers with benefits that include a benefit to local organizations. Each time customers use their card, they earn dollars toward future services, a portion of which can also be donated to one of many local nonprofits supported by Rolf’s. These include Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, YWCA Pierce County, FISH Food Banks, and the Cascade Animal Protection Society. Simons notes that word of mouth was an important part of building the company before social media and more traditional marketing approaches, so now he gives back to the community that helped the business flourish. Rolf’s is giving back through additional outreach programs as well. Each month one local organization is selected to be the Charity of the Month, and for each online appointment scheduled, Rolf’s donates $5. Customers are also welcome to request that the donation be sent to other nonprofits the company supports. With a strong sense of community and a proud family legacy, Rolf’s plans to continue to grow and have a lasting impact on the South Sound. vANDREA LERUM For additional information: rolfsimport.com Rolf’s Import Auto Service - Lakewood 3122 96th St S, Lakewood 253.584.7770 Rolf’s Import Auto Service - Fife 3151 20th St E, Fife 253.248.1080

fall theater preview As the weather cools, it’s time to move indoors to local performance stages, where a wide range of live entertainment comes to life. Take your pick from beloved musicals and classic plays, edgy dramas, special concerts, and innovative performance arts. At Tacoma’s Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, the Pantages Theater will feature, among others, a tribute to Queen, the ballet Swan Lake, “Mark Twain Tonight” with Hal Holbrook, the Jeff Daniels Band and Chris Perondi’s “Stunt Dog Experience.” The Rialto brings to life “In My Life: A Musical Theatre Tribute to the Beatles.” And live autumn entertainment can be found at the 302-seat Theatre on the Square adjacent to the Pantages. As Lacey Wright, associate executive director of the Broadway Center, sums up: “With appearances by Johnny Mathis, Audra McDonald, and Los Lobos, plus Broadway musicals, comedy, dance, film and family events, you’re sure to find performances you’ll love to share with friends and family.” Tacoma Little Theatre, now in its 97th year, presents Boeing Boeing, set in 1960s Paris around the blossoming aerospace industry; Rabbit Hole, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize–winning drama; and the 1940s classic A Christmas Story. At the Paradise Theatre in Gig Harbor, shows include Fiddler on the Roof, The Little Mermaid, the Puget Sound premiere of the Tony-winning Next to Normal and Scrooge: The Musical. The theater is also presenting the Brothers Grimm tale Into the Woods, by Lapine and Sondheim, with several accompanying public events. In Olympia, The Washington Center for the Performing Arts has slated a season of international artists from a broad spectrum of genres including the dazzling dancer-illusionists

agave cocina and cantina-a fusion of mexican and latin america If you are a lover of Mexican food, prepare to have your expectations exceeded. Agave Cocina and Cantina recently opened at Kent Station, bringing to the South Sound its unique atmosphere and cuisine made popular in Redmond. Founder Julian Ramos has been thrilled with the reception of local residents and shoppers to the new location. While Kent Station offers a range of dining options, it had lacked an authentic dine-in Mexican establishment. Now, he says, “our guests can enjoy Agave’s food and hand-picked sipping tequila selection in a strikingly distinctive setting.”

San Cayetano, Mexico, further adding to the restaurant’s authentic feel. If you are looking to expand your palate beyond the flavors we think we know as south of the border, stop by Agave Cocina and Cantina and prepare to be amazed! vANDREA LERUM

Agave Cocina and Cantina 504 Ramsay Way, Kent 253.277.2053 The menu is more than your average rice and bean platters. agaverest.com Agave boasts a fusion of cuisine from Mexico and Central and South America. All menu items are made from scratch with fresh ingredients, most locally sourced. Ramos uses organic and free-range meats whenever possible. Specialty cocktails are a happy hour favorite along with margaritas made from scratch using fresh fruit and lime combinations. Options are abundant and Agave takes great care to cater to all dietary needs. Whether you prefer gluten free, vegetarian or vegan, there is no shortage of choices that will leave you feeling satisfied. Steering clear of preservatives is a high priority at Agave, and lard also is not used when preparing dishes. The restaurant space mimics a rustic cantina with high ceilings and steel beams. ricardo ,s restaurant Born and raised in Lacey, Rick Nelson first acquired his passion for food while bussing tables at his grandfather’s beloved local pizza parlor, Dirty Dave’s. The Timberline High School grad developed foodie traction at the Olympia Farmers Market. This was followed by stints as sous chef at Genoa’s on the

Bay and at the iconic Italian hub, Mama Stortini’s. Partnering with his mother in 2003, he opened the pasta restaurant Ricardo’s. Its cozy, casual ambiance attracted a broad fan base and has progressed into one of the Puget Sound area’s most highly regarded steakhouses. For both first and longtime diners, the entire experience—from relaxing atmosphere, to edgy original tastes and top-notch ingredients, to first-rate, friendly service—is simply brilliant. Guests will find a happy hour menu from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with popular bites like Ricardo Sliders with blue cheese and tomatoes, jumbo mesquite-grilled prawns, and prime rib dips. A savvy choice of area wines and brews and specialty drinks like the ginger-infused Perfect Redhead complete the happy hour options. For dinner, the restaurant’s specialty dry-aged beef cuts plus selections such as truffle chicken, peppered ahi tuna, mesquite-grilled lamb rack on gremolata-crusted polenta, and fresh, buttery breadcrumb-topped Dungeness crab mac and cheese invite culinary experimentation. Taunting desserts—gooey chocolate “Not Soufflé,” the vanilla bean-infused root beer float, tangy cheesecake, fresh wild berry crisp, and mini-bites of tiramisu, crème brûlée, chocolates and sorbets—live up to all expectations. And portions are ample enough for sharing.

northlight interiors-style makers Anyone who has ever set out to redecorate knows what a struggle it can be. Whether it is one room or an entire home, the challenge can be overwhelming. With so many choices, colors and fabrics, it can be difficult to know where to begin. For local Pacific Northwest designers Juleen Pudists and Christine Kern, helping clients turn dreams into reality is what makes every project a unique adventure.

“Every project is led by the client’s hopes,” says Pudists. “Inspiration might come from a piece of art, their favorite color or the environment, like the beach or the mountains.” Clients benefit from the two designers’ diverse backgrounds. Both highly creative with a love for architecture, they have experience with their own design projects and are skilled in both residential remodels and commercial projects throughout the Northwest. Working with contractors and homeowners alike, Pudists and Kern have a healthy respect for both sides of the building industry. The design duo focuses on delivering peace of mind, which extends to the type of products sold in their showroom in Sumner. “We don’t allow anything in the store that we would not want to take home with us,” says Pudists. They carry a number of items made exclusively in the U.S. and also items that are good for the home and the environment, such as clean-burning candles. Northlight Interiors recently received the 2015 Best of Houzz award for client satisfaction and placed in the top five in the King 5 Best of Western Washington. With a long list of satisfied clients and more in the works, this team is making serious waves in the local design arena. SHOWCASE MAGAZINE

ledger square law: legal office and gallery In Tacoma’s Theater District, the historic Ledger building, once the home of the News Tribune, has been transformed and now houses the offices of Ledger Square Law. The four partners of the firm traded the high-rise and big-firm experience for small-firm flexibility and efficiency. Partner Jason Whalen envisioned a unique space that allowed for a collaborative law practice in creative surroundings. In August 2014, the partners started the project, and the offices of Ledger Square Law opened on January 1, 2015. The newly formed law firm offers a new twist on an old concept—meeting clients’ legal needs through both “high touch” and “high tech” in a comfortable, approachable urban-street-front setting. “In most offices the people are not seen—they are tucked behind the scenes. We purposely created a space that is spacious and open, and you see everyone that is working on site,” says Whalen. The reaction to this innovative approach has been very positive, he says. The offices radiate an ambiance of Northwest artistic minimalism. Glass and artwork are significant design elements in the space, and functional art pieces resonate here. The boardroom table was hand-designed by a local artist, and chic glass creates a modern feel. The reception desk was cleverly crafted from refurbished wood. One of the firm’s side interests has been to display works by Puget Sound–area artists in its urban-chic gallery-like office space. Plans are to rotate the art quarterly to allow for a procession of artists to share their work through the space. fashion forward-day to night for fall Fall brings with it more than just a change of weather. For most of us it also signals a change of pace for work, family and social life. The easygoing, long days of summer give way to hectic work schedules, school commitments and a barrage of social functions. Days start early and often end late, leaving little time for a clothing change between events. To save time, and a little sanity, try these tips and tricks next time you find your day stretching beyond traditional hours. Take a look at your current wardrobe and take an inventory. Do the items you have allow for an easy transition? Are they comfortable for long hours of continuous wear? If the answer is yes, then you are ahead of the game. If not, then it might be time to reassess and make a few changes. Pieces that easily layer—think blazers, cardigans and cropped jackets—are essential and more versatile than you might realize. By simply removing or adding a cropped jacket, for example, you instantly give your look the ability to go from day to night. Going out for cocktails after work? Lose the jacket and let your accessories do the work. Don’t neglect the importance of comfortable footwear. At the end of a long day, comfort will be at the forefront and will make a two-hour PTA meeting more tolerable. Keep a pair of outfit-appropriate flats on hand at all times. Accessories will always help pull an outfit together. This fall, chunky statement earrings, faux-fur stoles and patterned tights will provide fresh and fashion-forward looks while still being easy go-to pieces for days that seem to end long after the sun goes down. vANDREA LERUM

Jumbo Dungeness crab and shrimp cake are served with a lemongrass sauce and topped with tomato jam. Seafood lovers will find bliss in chef-inspired entrees including the cedar plank salmon served with rainbow potatoes, forager mushrooms, pancetta, tomato, asparagus, truffle cream and blackberry honey. arthritis or carpal tunnel? We rely on our hands for so many daily activities, whether working, driving or cooking. Hand pain stemming from arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome or other causes can be debilitating if not treated. Fortunately, there are many treatments available. Arthritis Arthritis is a very common cause of hand and wrist pain, says Dr. Ryan Riel, a MultiCare orthopedic surgeon specializing in the hands. People can try to manage symptoms through resting and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication, he says, “but if symptoms persist, [patients] usually come in.” Arthritis is more common in women over 50 and men 65 and up, according to Dr. Ian Lawson, also a MultiCare orthopedic surgeon and hand specialist. He says there are many options to consider—from injections, bracing and creams, all the way up to small joint replacement and reconstruction. Says Riel: “We try to treat conditions conservatively at first. If surgery is called for, it will involve several weeks or months of hand therapy to regain full function. People are thrilled to get their full function back.” Carpal tunnel syndrome Wrist pain is less common than hand pain, according to Lawson. He says it tends to occur with younger people who do production work that requires repetitive motions.

Symptoms include numbness, pain and loss of motion. The pain can even interfere with sleeping. Lawson says it can usually be diagnosed from taking a history or doing an X-ray or nerve conduction studies.
