SPIRITUALITY AT SHERBORNE GIRLS A Guide for Pupils and Staff

Rev. Windle, School Chaplain I am here to provide pastoral support and spiritual guidance to all members of our community, whatever your faith background or beliefs. My family and our spaniel Reg live on site, and I visit all the Houses regularly. I teach English, Theology, Philosophy and Ethics and PSHEE, and together with the chaplaincy team, lead weekly Prayers, exploring faith groups, confirmation classes and services for pupils and staff. You can contact me at any time for a chat via email at chaplain@sherborne.com or find me in The Ark, which is just up the stairs from Reception in main school.

How The Chaplaincy Can Support You The Chaplaincy is here for everyone. Whether you are a Christian, part of another faith tradition, or if you have no religious faith but want to explore your own spirituality, the Chaplaincy team is here to support you. We are here to offer one-to-one support with any worries, concerns or questions you might

have in an inclusive, nonjudgmental way. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one or other difficult situations, help and support are always available. If you want a quiet place to take time out, reflect, pray or simply be, The Ark in main school is always open.

Spirituality

At Sherborne Girls, Spirituality is one of our five pillars. We believe that it is important to take care of our spirit and to grow in our own inner life. We believe that each person in our community is unique, loved and valuable and that, together, we can help one another to thrive. To grow in spirituality is to become whole; able to withstand the ups and downs of life, integrate our experiences, make good choices, seek justice for 2

others, take care of the environment, connect with ourselves, God and one another, living life to the full. Our wonderfully diverse community is made up of people from a range of cultures and worldviews; each person is encouraged to explore spirituality in a way that resonates with their own experience and beliefs as well as learn about and honour the ideas and views of others.

SHERBORNE GIRLS - SPIRITUALITY

Our Christian Foundation At Sherborne Girls, we are proud of our Christian foundation. It gives us an inherited faith and values on which to draw in the contemporary world, grounding our community in a culture of compassion, courage, service and hope. We meet regularly for prayer, celebration and reflection. Pupils take an active part in planning or leading weekly Prayers and Sunday services, as well as Abbey Eucharists and joint services with Sherborne School. Our strong choral tradition and senior choir ensure that the quality of our collective worship is beautiful and inspiring to all. Throughout the year there are opportunities for pupils to grow in their Christian faith: through confirmation classes, informal discussion groups such as Focus, and creative prayer spaces in The Ark. All pupils are encouraged to reflect upon their values and faith, and those of others, whatever their religion or beliefs.

Other Faith Traditions If you would like to meet up with others from a different faith tradition or would value support resourcing worship/prayer, please contact Rev. Windle, chaplain@sherborne.com.

House Spirituality Houses each have their own unique character but our school values: Compassion, Courage, Curiosity, Adaptability and Spirituality underpin their community life together. Mealtimes are always special. We value sharing food and conversation, saying grace or being grateful for all that we have, as well as thankful for those who have prepared our meals. All the Houses support local charities, including the Sherborne Food Bank, which encourages generosity and awareness of the needs of others. As a school we celebrate House Spirit, which encourages everyone to see themselves as a valuable part of something bigger.

Integrity Our theme for this year is Integrity. Our services and weekly Prayers will be related to this theme, as we explore what integrity is, why it is important, how it relates to faith and spirituality, and how we might grow in integrity as individuals and as a community. Pupils and members of staff are invited to share their ideas on this theme during the year, through creative projects or a reflection in Prayers. We like our weekly Prayers and Sunday services to be interactive, inclusive and for all to participate in whatever way they can. It is a good opportunity to serve and lead others and grow in confidence in public speaking. If you would like to do a reading, perform drama or play music, please get in touch with Rev. Windle, chaplain@sherborne.com.
