Scholarships and Awards for 2019 Entry Sherborne Girls offers a number of scholarships, exhibitions and bursaries for girls entering the school at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Scholarships may be combined with bursarial support. Applications for Bursaries must be submitted at the same time. Scholarships All Scholarship awards are made on merit with a maximum merit award of £3000. All awards are tenable throughout a girl’s time at Sherborne Girls and it is a condition of an award that a girl will complete her Sixth Form education at Sherborne Girls and will maintain a high standard of work and scholarship.

Bursaries Bursarial support may be available in cases of demonstrable need. Bursaries may be awarded on the receipt of a means test form and are subject to regular review. Most Bursaries will be awarded in conjunction with Scholarships and Exhibitions. Families may write to the Bursar to be considered for bursarial support once the girls are registered. Means-test forms will need to be submitted to the Bursar no later than the 31 October for Sixth Form entry and 11+ and 31 December for 13+ entry in any year for bursaries to start the following September. Sixth Form Scholarships All candidates will usually be under 17 on 1 September in the year in which the examination is held and may be required to stay overnight during the assessments. Internal candidates may apply with the written support of the appropriate Head/s of Department.
Academic
Assessments will take place on 13-14 November 2018 Major Scholarship awards are a maximum of ÂŁ3000 per annum and minor ones at ÂŁ1500. Exhibitions are awarded at a lower monetary value. Means-tested Bursaries can raise considerably the effective amount of an award. Candidates must offer papers in three subjects. These need not be subjects they are planning to take at A Level or IB; they should be the subjects in which they are most likely to perform exceptionally well. The papers will look for ability rather than knowledge and should not involve large quantities of revision. External candidates will be interviewed by the Heads of Department for the subjects they have chosen. In addition, all candidates will be required to sit a general paper and will have a further interview with either the Headmistress or a Deputy Head.
Award holders will have the opportunity to participate in seminars and discussions, some of which are reserved for the most-able students. Scholars are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities provided by attending lectures given by visiting speakers and by participating in academic societies. The provision for Academic Scholars is currently under review and we hope to provide a more extensive programme of events in the near future. Award holders are expected to maintain a high academic standard and show leadership in the classroom. Candidates entering for the Academic Scholarship may also enter for one of the Art, Drama, Music or Sports Scholarships.

Art and Design Assessments will take place on 13-14 November 2018 Awards of up to £3000 per annum are awarded. Means-tested Bursaries can raise considerably the effective amount of an award. Candidates for the Art Scholarship should bring a portfolio of their recent work to the School so that they can be interviewed with their work. The portfolio may include anything that best represents their own interests and talents – sketch books, paintings and drawings, collages, prints and three-dimensional work (unframed work is preferable). Any large scale/3D work should be photographed. In addition to this, girls will be asked to produce a piece of work based on a set theme to show evidence of decision making. Please note that the Art Scholarship can be given for Art or Design Technology (including Textiles). Candidates interested in the latter will be interviewed by the Design and Technology staff. Design candidates should bring practical work where possible, photographs will be accepted as a substitute.
The Award holders are expected to be studying either Art or Design Technology as part of their Sixth Form course. They must be willing to participate fully in activities, attending workshops and events regularly. Award holders will have the opportunity to work with a number of specialist staff to develop and explore a variety of media. Workshops are held regularly and there is a comprehensive programme of visits which enhance the artistic life of the School. There is an expectation that a Sixth Form Art Scholar will undertake the Arts Award Gold qualification. The award will make provision to support this with a sum allocated to allow for gallery visits and participation in workshops. Candidates for the Art Scholarship may not enter for the Drama Music or Sport Scholarships.

Drama Assessments will take place on 13-14 November 2018 Awards of up to £3000 per annum are awarded. Means-tested Bursaries can raise considerably the effective amount of an award. Candidates for the Drama Scholarship will be expected to take part in both a group workshop where their creative directorial ideas and ability to communicate well with other girls in small independent groups will be assessed. They should also prepare a short section of a published script (lasting no longer than two minutes) which they will perform. Considerable importance will be placed on the candidate’s natural ability – their understanding of the character they are playing; the truthfulness of their interpretation for the monologue and their improvisational skills in the workshop. Candidates will also be interviewed by a member of staff to discuss their understanding and interest in drama as a wider subject. They should be prepared to discuss any recent performances they have taken part in and any recent productions they have seen, either professional or amateur.

Music Assessments will take place on 13-14 November 2018 Music holds a very special place in the tradition of excellence at Sherborne Girls. We allocate music awards, so as to encourage and enable as broad a range of prospective scholars as possible to experience the benefits and challenges of the joy of making music at Sherborne Girls. Scholarships offer fee remission of up to £3000. Means-tested Bursaries can increase the effective amount of an award. Music Exhibitions are also offered to girls showing real potential. Both these awards cover the cost of music tuition for up to three lessons per week. Candidates should be prepared to play two contrasting pieces on their first instrument and where they study one, one piece on their second instrument, and scales and arpeggios of appropriate standard on both. A member of staff will act as accompanist and candidates will be required to stay in School overnight so as to provide sufficient time for rehearsal before the audition. Considerable importance will be placed upon a candidate’s ability to prepare and perform a previously unseen piece of music (for which ample time will be given), and a comprehensive aural assessment will include a listening paper and standard rhythm and pitch tests. All candidates are encouraged to offer singing in addition to their instrumental performances, and any original compositions will also be taken into account.
Candidates should have reached Grade 7 standard on their first instrument, and where appropriate, have demonstrated good potential on a second. Music candidates are strongly encouraged to book a preaudition with the Director of Music before entering for a Music scholarship. Award holders will have the opportunity to perform regularly both as members of musical groups and as soloists. The School Calendar incorporates a regular programme of large-scale choral and orchestral concerts. A series of Celebrity Concerts brings a variety of artists to give master-classes and recitals. Award holders are expected to practise regularly, participate in appropriate ensembles and attend rehearsals promptly. Girls living overseas are required to arrange their end-of-term travel arrangements to allow them to attend all final services and concerts. 11+ Assessments will take place on 7 December 2018 13+ Assessments will take place between 28-30 January 2019 Major Scholarship awards are usually in the region of ÂŁ3000 per annum, with minor ones at ÂŁ1500 and Exhibitions at a lower value. Means-tested Bursaries can raise considerably the effective amount of an award. Candidates will sit papers in English, Mathematics and Science. In addition they may request an interview to assess their ability in French. Candidates will be given the option to sit a paper in one additional subject of their choice in order to demonstrate particular areas of ability. There will be further interviews and assessments, where girls will be required to use their general knowledge and ability to research. No revision is required for the further assessments.

Art and Design Assessments will take place between 28-30 January 2019 Awards of up to £3000 fees may be awarded per annum. Meanstested Bursaries can raise considerably the effective amount of an award. Candidates for the Art Scholarship should bring a portfolio of their recent work to the School so that they can be interviewed with their work. A maximum of fifteen pieces should be selected and may include anything that best represents their own interests and talents – paintings and drawings, collages, prints and three-dimensional work (framing is not necessary). Any large scale/3D work should be photographed. Sketch books may also be added. In addition to this, girls will be asked to produce a piece of work from a given stimulus on the day. Materials will be available in the department. Any project work on other artists may be useful but is by no means essential. Please note that the Art Scholarship can be given for Art or Design Technology. Girls interested in the latter will be interviewed by the staff concerned, please notify the School in advance if candidates wish to offer Design Technology. Candidates should bring design and practical work if possible. However photographs could be a substitute for this if it is difficult to transport. Award holders will have the opportunity to work with a number of specialist staff to develop and explore a variety of media. Additional Information for Music Scholars In addition to Piano and the usual full complement of orchestral instruments, tuition is offered on Baroque Recorder, Saxophone, Harp, Organ, Percussion and Guitar. A large number of girls also study solo singing. The Music Department also offers courses in the Alexander Technique. Class Music Class Music is taught in the junior part of the School (Years 7, 8 and 9) leading up to GCSE. Music is offered as an option at GCSE, A level and IB. All-rounder Awards Assessments for an All-rounder Award will take place alongside the assessments for the individual scholarships in January 2019 At Sherborne we celebrate All-round Excellence. The All-rounder Award takes into account ability in two areas of co-curricular skill (art, drama, music and sport) as well as considering academic potential. Where it is appropriate an All-rounder Award may cover the cost of individual tuition or training for one individual lesson per week. Any scholarship candidate can be assessed in a maximum of two skills (art, drama, music and sport); by doing so they will automatically be considered for the All-rounder award as well as the individual scholarships. Candidates will not be awarded more than one scholarship unless the circumstances are exceptional. All-rounder Awards of up to ÂŁ3000 per annum may be awarded. Means tested Bursaries can raise considerably the effective amount of an award.
Students will undertake the same assessment as the candidates for the individual scholarships and may need to attend on more than one day. We recognise that an ‘All-rounder’ may not have reached the same level of performance but recent experience has shown that there are some very talented All-rounder candidates who have difficulty in selecting a specialty at 13+. It is important that evidence of academic ability is sufficiently high that the All-rounder Scholar will be able to cope with a busy co-curricular programme.
