WELCOME It gives me great please to introduce our music diary for this Lent Term 2024. Music has a very special place at Sherborne Girls, and we warmly and enthusiastically embrace music in all its forms. We have a packed and broad programme of events this term, the majority of which are open to a wide audience. Our musicians will be taking part in masterclasses, competitions and a variety of concerts, gigs and recitals in our fabulous Gransden Hall, Sherborne Abbey, Cheap St Church, Exeter Cathedral and Oxford Town Hall. Alongside this we are excited to present our Subscription Concert
Series featuring world class musicians – The Bristol Ensemble with Jasmine Ghera (2 Feb), pianist Paul Lewis (7 March) and our muchloved violinist, Sherborne Old Girl, Ruth Rogers in recital with pianist Simon Callaghan (19 April). These three concerts are open to all, tickets are £20 each or £50 for all three. We very much look forward to welcoming you into the music department at Sherborne Girls.

Since its foundation in 1994 by violinist and CEO Roger Huckle, the Bristol Ensemble has been at the forefront of musical life in Bristol and the Southwest. The ensemble has a busy schedule of concerts at St. George’s, Bristol, in addition to its regular concert series in Henleaze, Nailsworth, and Bradford-on-Avon. Among the Bristol Ensemble’s core values are the promotion of local talent and to serve the community in which it is based. It has achieved this over the past quarter of a century through world-class performances, awardwinning education projects, and collaborations with many of the finest international performers, including projects with Nicola Benedetti, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Freddy Kempf, Sherborne Old Girl Dame Emma Kirkby, Lesley Garrett and Gabriel Prokofiev.

The Harriet Tory Masterclass Trust was established in 2008 in memory of Harriet ' ' '''''7 & & Tory & (A 86), who was tragically killed in an accident in 2005. A memorial fund was set up in her & & & & & & & name, which has been used to support the establishment of an annual masterclass and & of& music and& the & personal & & support she concert at school. Given Harriet’s life-long love gave to many friends to help them pursue their musical passions, we believe this is a fitting tribute to her very full and selfless life. The inaugural concert in 2009 took place in St Mary’s Church, Dorchester, and was a performance of Handel’s Messiah (2009 being the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death): since then, Harriet Tory 1968-2005 masterclasses and concerts have been given annually in all genres of music, and over the years we have been fortunate to engage some outstanding professionals: Simon Standage, virtuoso violinist; Peter Phillips, founder and director of the Tallis Scholars; Professor Ian Jones from the Royal College of Music; baroque specialist Dr Ricardo Barros; Sherborne Girls Old Girl Dame Emma Kirkby; Samuel Coles, Principal Flute of the Philharmonic Orchestra; Ken Burton, one of the world’s leading figures in Gospel music and one of the judges for the BBC Choir of the Year competition; Embassy Brass; the Carducci Quartet, the conductor Richard Dickins, and Paul Harris, now established as one of the UK's leading educationalists. This year we are delighted to welcome Paul Lewis, pianist, who will work with Sherborne Girls pianists in a workshop and concert on 6 March, and will then return to perform the fourth and final programme of his current world Schubert Series tomorrow evening, as part of the Sherborne Girls Subscription Series Concerts.

Paul Lewis studied with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London before going on to study privately with Alfred Brendel. He is co-Artistic Director of Midsummer Music, an annual chamber music festival held in Buckinghamshire, UK. His recital career takes him to venues such as London’s Royal Festival Hall, Alice Tully and Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Berlin Philharmonie and Konzerthaus. He is also a frequent guest at the some of the world’s most prestigious festivals, including Tanglewood, Ravinia, Schubertiade, Edinburgh, Salzburg, Lucerne, and the BBC Proms where in 2010 he became the first person to play a complete Beethoven piano concerto cycle in a single season.
