The Year in Review

As this academic year comes to a close and we send forth another wonderful cohort of resilient, independent-minded and compassionate individuals, I feel hopeful for them, and for our deeply challenged and rapidly changing world. When they leave us, they will join the generations of young women empowered by Sherborne Girls to pursue their dreams, unafraid to be themselves, and ready to make a positive and substantive difference.

Looking back at the extraordinary achievements of our Upper Sixth leavers, and of pupils across all year groups, there is so much to remind us we are here: not only to educate but also to prepare future leaders who will shape the world with their aspirations and sense of collective responsibility

Preparedness at Sherborne Girls is achieved through a focus on four different areas, which together underpin the distinctive ethos that makes a Sherborne Girls education so special: aspiration, wellbeing, collective responsibility and community

Aspiration, of course, is what propels us to seek and seize opportunities It is what fuels our dreams and gives us the courage to defy the limitations set by others or by ourselves. Whether

it’s mastering a foreign language, winning a stunning 17 music awards at Taunton Arts Festival, being crowned South West Schools Cross Country Champions, completing the gruelling Ten Tors Challenge, or walking over 26 miles in London to raise money for a breast cancer charity, this year our pupils have set themselves audacious goals and achieved them with unwavering determination

Arguably, the limits set by ourselves often prove to be the greater obstacle to success, which is why, in September, we created the role of Assistant Head Aspiration and Wellbeing This new post recognises that aspiration alone is not enough To aspire, pupils need to feel supported, nurtured, valued and safe In a fast-paced world dominated by social media’s questionable values, success will also be measured by pupils’ ability to manage their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

In November, we backed up our commitment to wellbeing by trying something that no school has ever done before For one whole day, our entire community of nearly 500 pupils and more than 300 staff abandoned their screens, closed their timetables, and put themselves on pause to focus on wellbeing. Press Pause Day empowered

girls and staff to explore what makes them feel happy, calm and well. It was wonderful to feel the school buzzing with activities from sumi ink art, wreath making and ballroom dancing to walking, swimming and bird watching

In bringing our community closer together, Press Pause Day also reminded us that wellbeing extends beyond the individual: we all felt stronger, happier and healthier together. That sense of togetherness makes Sherborne Girls a very special place to live, work and study and derives from our culture of community and collective responsibility

Community is the heart and soul of Sherborne Girls, which is a place where kindness, empathy and compassion prevail I see it in the many acts of kindness - the helping hand, the listening ear or that well-timed cup of tea - in our boarding houses, corridors and classrooms every day. It is what inspires our pupils to support each other through the extraordinary number of pupil-led support groups and pupil voice platforms, all of which help to make our school a very happy place to be

This strong sense of belonging applies not only to our school community but to our local and

wider communities We want all pupils to acknowledge and embrace their place in the world and their collective responsibility towards one another, our environment, and society at large Over the last academic year, pupils across all year groups, as well as teaching and support staff, have reached out to raise awareness and funds for local and international charities They have run marathons, completed the three-peaks challenge, baked cakes, cleared rubbish and volunteered at a foodbank, youth centre, primary school and nursing home, discovering that they can make a difference and are already a force for good

Knowing that they can be agents of change, achieve their goals and go even further is what will give our Upper Sixth leavers and all our pupils a sense of purpose when exams are done and classrooms are left behind They might find it hard today to see how Sherborne Girls has prepared them for their futures but, looking at what has been achieved this year, I can say with confidence that our outgoing Upper Sixth, and all our pupils, will go forth and pursue their dreams, seizing opportunities to lead, to serve and to make the world a better place

Initiative Awards The Head’s Award

These are awarded to pupils from any year group who have been proactive and shown initiative within or beyond the School community. This year three pupils were selected to receive the award:

• Matilda Davies (U4) raised £810 during the May half-term by swimming 5km in one go to raise money for a MND charity She chose 5000m to represent the 5000 MND sufferers in the UK at any given time. Matilda also added on an extra 5 lengths for the 5 people diagnosed with MND every minute in the UK

• Bella Simpson Gee (L6) showed drive, initiative and resourcefulness, masterminding 'Bella's Kitchen', a pop-up food stall from the School horse box Researching, sourcing, promoting and making healthy and balanced dishes, Bella sold out on the day, raising £300 for UNICEF to help tackle famine globally

• Tatiana Welchman (L6) embraced her role on the School’s Eco Council and committed to reducing energy use within the School, one step at a time Tatiana developed the ‘lights off ’ award in Kenelm, which consists of a weekly prize for the year group who are most reliable at turning their lights off - an initiative that might be rolled out more widely next year

Traditionally this award has been given to the Heads and Vice Heads of School A unanimous decision was made by the current Heads and Vice Heads of School (Annie, Kitty, Poppy and Selene) that the Award should be given to the member/s of U6 who had best embodied the School Values (Courageous, Compassionate, Curious, Adaptable and Spiritual), during their time in the U6 Voted for by the U6

A one-week dolphin research project with ‘Working Abroad’ in Greece working alongside scientists to research bottlenose dolphins recording behaviour, collecting data and assessing how marine life interacts with local fisheries

A two-week volunteering placement in Costa Rica on a sea turtle conservation programme, which also involves supporting outreach programmes in social projects and local schools organised by Maximo Nivel institute.
