LOCAL DOG LOVERS

HELP ENRICH LIVES Local dog sitters, Barking Mad, Newcastle and Tyne Valley, are asking fellow dog lovers to join them in helping to change lives.

D

og holiday specialists, Barking Mad have officially partnered with Dogs for Good, a life transforming charity which creates partnerships between people living with disability and specially trained assistance dogs.

Carrie from the Newcastle and Tyne Valley branch enthused: "We are so proud that Dogs for Good is Barking Mad's chosen charity for 2018! Dogs for Good train assistance dogs to support adults and children with a wide range of disabilities and also children with autism, in order to enrich and improve lives. This is particularly relevant to the work which we undertake with our own dog sitting Host Community. We offer the opportunity to care for someone else's dog whilst its owners are away and through this initiative we witness the amazing difference that canine companions can make in terms of improving social interaction and fitness every day.” Cathryn Simpson, Corporate Partnerships Manager for Dogs for Good said, ‘We’re absolutely delighted to be working with Barking Mad in 2018, there’s obvious synergy between the two organisations in respect of the dogs but more importantly the ethos of both organisations is closely matched and this is important to ensure a successful partnership. Thank you to everyone for getting involved!"

THE FLOWER OF THE EAST The Venetians once dubbed Zante – or Zakynthos as it’s also known – ‘The Flower of the Orient’, thanks to its lush countryside. And it’s a nickname that still rings true today. Olive groves, lemon trees and bougainvillea cover the whole island, peeking out from between rolling hills. By Richard Wilson

W

hilst some people think they need to travel to the other side of the world to experience the best beaches, the bluest seas, tropical conditions and the finest food, we think we have found a destination a lot closer to home, which delivers in abundance on each of the above points. Zante, also often known as Zakynthos, is just over 3 hours from Newcastle airport, and gives holiday makers everything they can get from faraway holiday, without the extra expense or hours added on to your journey! Zante is the most southerly of the Ionian Islands, a small group of islands just off the West Coast of Greece, and is one of the most popular Greek islands. Triangular

in shape, the island of Zante has three distinct geographical areas. The north-west is mountainous with quaint traditional mountain villages, the central region is a fertile plain rich with olive groves and vineyards and the south-east is characterised by beautiful beaches. There is something for everyone on the island, with numerous sandy beaches, mountain villages preserving the traditional Greek way of life, beautiful natural scenery, water sports and good quality restaurants, bars and nightclubs to more than cater for all your entertainment needs. The locals welcome tourists with open arms, and offer them the hospitality which Greece is famous for. Zante’s coastline is just as

impressive as its interior. Sandy shores give way to turquoise seas, caves, and hidden coves, with rugged cliffs offering up grandstand views of the Ionian sunsets. Another part of Zante’s appeal is the fact it caters for all sorts of holidays. Laganas is the place to go for the big clubs, while Tsilivi’s streets are brimming with bars and restaurants. Head for the likes of Alykanas and Kalamaki, meanwhile, and you’ll find soft sands and a more go-slow pace. The resort we will focus on is Tsilivi, a resort which has grown in size and popularity over recent years, yet has still kept its Greek charm. Tsilivi is located just 6km from the capital of the island, Zante Town, on the East coast of the island, and is around 15 minutes via transfer from the airport. The resort has expanded over the last decade or so due to its popularity with couples and families alike, but has still managed to maintain its traditional Greek feel and picture postcard surroundings of olive groves and vineyards. The beach at Tsilivi is one of the best on the island, and is a 2km stretch of soft sand, shallow clear waters and beach side bars and tavernas. It definitely deserves the prestigious Blue Flag it has been awarded! The beach is child friendly and safe for the kids to enjoy, as the sand shelves gently in to the sea and the water is shallow for

"Locals welcome tourists with open arms, and offer them the hospitality which Greece is famous for. over a hundred meters. There are numerous wathersports on offer for the more energetic, and the beach is ideal for families, couples and anyone feeling adventurous. The old resort centre has beautiful stone lines streets, an old chapel, and many gift shops catering for all your needs. In recent years the resort has also gained a reputation for its nightlife which, although is nowhere near the lively Laganas, has an abundance of friendly family run bars, restraunts and tavernas on offer, providing a fantastic night for everyone. There are a fantastic selection of tavernas, all of which are family run, with many growing their own produce, making the traditional dishes even more unique and flavoursome. Tsilivi has a real family friendly atmosphere, beautiful scenery, a spectacular beach, wonderful food, great nightlife, not to mention endless hours of sunshine! In short, it has everything you could wish for from a holiday destination!

PLACES TO STAY St Johns Villas

Ideally situated on a grassy hill on the outskirts of Tsilivi, St Johns Villas offer panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, the village itself and the long sandy beach. The complex consists of 21 villas in total, all with panoramic stunning sea views. There are two types of villas, three bedroom villas measuring 130sqm, or two bedroom villas measuring 100sqm and all have their own private entrance, private parking, gardens and swimming pool. The villas themselves each have their own private pool, with many benefiting from a landscaped lawn area, and all have plenty of sunbathing areas. Each villa is constructed to a high standard and decorated throughout in a modern contemporary design. All of the two bed and three bed villas are luxuriously furnished, with all the facilities that will make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. They all have air-con, individually controlled in each room, multiple shower rooms, a full kitchen, TV’s, a DVD and a secure safety deposit box. The complex also includes a snack bar, a more traditional restaurant, a gym, a beauty salon, a pool table and a mini market. The villas have recently

TRAVEL

undergone modernisation upgrades to maintain their 5 star standards, and the complex itself has new features and services. One fantastic new addition is the breakfast buffet which, for 8.50 euros, represents excellent value for money given the quality of the food! The only thing to note is the hill is quite steep, so car hire is recommended. If not, please allow around 7 euros per trip to the village centre by taxi.

Contessina Hotel

The modern 90 bed hotel has a modern, contemporary feel, yet has still managed to maintain its Greek charm. The hotel is ideally located, only a 2 minute stroll from the beautiful beach, with the main strip of shops, bars and tervernas a 2 minute stroll in the other direction. Don’t worry though, in the evening you cannot hear the noise from the bustling strip, as the hotel is well set back and the evening sounds do not travel to the hotel. The rooms are quite large, with ample sized balconies and most look out on to the pool and bar area. The pool is large enough to accommodate the amount of guests, and there is a pool table, cinema style screen showing movies and sports, and a pool side bar serving a very good standard of food. This is a very high standard Greek hotel for the price, and represents really good value for money given the quality of the rooms and location.

Tsilivi Waterpark

PLACES TO VISIT Tsilivi Waterpark

The waterpark is situated on the outskirts of Tsilivi, just off the main road at the North end of the village. There are a good selection of waterslides on hand to suit everyone, from those young in age, to the young at heart! There is a lazy river and a dedicated children’s area. Sunbeds are a plenty, and the park is never too busy, so there are always plenty available, and this also means the queues are never too long for each ride.

Bowl’m Over

When you think of a beach holiday, indoor ten pin bowling is not something that immediately springs to mind! However, Bowl’m Over does offer a nice alternative to the normal holiday activities and, especially when the sun becomes that little bit

too much, or the kids are reaching boredom thresholds, can provide a real fun afternoon or evening. Bowl’m Over is a state of the art bowling centre, offering 4 bowling lanes and so much more! There are also a good number of pool tables, air hockey tables, a dart board, amusements, a children’s play area and an indoor bar. Once you have expelled all of your energy, there is also a manicured lawn at the front of the centre, with relaxing seated areas for you to while away the evening with one of their renowned cocktails! Oh, and if you are a dog lover, be sure to say hello to the owners friendly sidekick!

Fantasy Mini-Golf

Set in the heart of Tsilivi, just off the main road, you will find the very well maintained Fantasy Mini Golf. There are 3 fun packed 18 hole crazy golf courses, which are fun for all the family. Each course is beautifully laid out, with water features, fun obstacles and challenging undulations, all making for a challenging fun round. The staff are really friendly and will advise you as to which is the best course for you and help you out with the rules and any questions you have. There is even a fully stocked bar to help you either commiserate or celebrate your victory!

Romios Restaurant

PLACES TO EAT Romios

Set just outside the centre of the village, with easy access from every direction, Romios is an idyllic traditional Greek taverna full of character. The view at sunset from the top tear is spectacular, and the food is a perfect match. They do a full traditional Greek menu, and you will find all of the classic favourites, mixed with a nice selection of seafood and meat dishes. The stand out dish is the traditional shared Meze for two, which consists of the usual selection of meze dishes, plus a few little extra additions, all with Romios unique ingredients and flavours. This is one of the finest restaurants in the resort, and a must visit on your stay.

Dionisios Grill

Set off the main road, and only about 200 yards from the Contessina Hotel (turn right when you leave the Contessina and walk the 200 yards and you will see it on your right), this fantastic little family run taverna is a real hidden gem. The restaurant benefits from stunning views over the Ionian Sea, and the staff make you feel welcome from the minute you arrive, until the minute you begrudgingly leave! The food is traditional Greek (why would you eat anything else!), and the stand out dishes are the Beef Stifado and the Lamb Kleftiko, both cooked with home grown produce giving it that extra special freshness.

FURTHER AFIELD Vassilikos Beach

Situated on the Southeast part of the island, and around a half hour car journey from Tsilivi, Vassilikos has some of the most spectacular beaches on the island. The drive itself takes in some beautiful coastal views and, once you have arrived, you will be greeted with miles of unspoiled, uncrowded golden sands and turquoise waters. There are a handful of eateries set back from the beach, all of which serve a great selection of traditional Greek dishes and beach side snacks. The chef salad comes particularly recommended!

Laganas Bay

Laganas has a lot more to it than its endless array of pubs and clubs. The beach and surrounding bay and islands are home to spectacular sea

life, non-more so than the endangered and rare loggerhead turtles. The turtles migrate to Laganas Bay each year during the months of June, July and August to lay their eggs. The beach is protected during this time with ecologists watching the area round the clock. You can take boat trips around the bay and marvel at these beautiful, peaceful animals, without spoiling their natural habitat. Just off the bay there are the beautiful mini islands of Cameo Island and Marathonisti (nicknamed turtle island because of its amazing likeness in shape to the animal), and the spectacular blue caves. You can pre-book trips to any or all of these from a number of local agents in and around Tsilivi.

Keri Caves

The beautiful Keri Caves are located in the South-West of the island and are only accessible by sea. There are many boat trips available and booking early is advised as,

TRAVEL

especially in the Summer months, they are extremely popular. Along the coast there are many caves which entrances scarcely are barely wide enough to seim in to, others are broad enough to enter directly with a boat. While visiting the caves, it is possible to stop to swim or sunbathe in one of the many small beaches of Marathia Cape or to reach by boat the Mizitres. Mizitres are two crags very close to the cliffs that form a small beach of very fine sand, reachable only by boat. You can get really up close and personal with the sea life, so remember to bring your snorkel! Keep a particular eye out for the huge array of starfish.

Shipwreck Beach

On the North West coast of the island you will find Shipwreck Cove or Smugglers Cove, also called Navagio Beach, which is probably the most famous beach in Greece, and

Enjoy a swim around the caves

can only be accessed by boat. This picturesque beach has been photographed and featured in many holiday brochures, travel books and televised advertisements. The boat was shipwrecked back in 1980 after hitting rocks in bad weather while being pursued by the Greek Navy who suspected it was carrying contraband cigarettes (an accusation found to be untrue). Shipwreck Beach is enclosed within large steep cliffs, which give it this remote, inaccessible feel. Because of that, it is impossible to walk to the beach, instead you will need to

take the boat. Frequent boat services are available from nearby ports and harbours and excursions can be booked from a number of outlets in Tsilivi. One thing to note however, if you are planning to lounge in the sun whilst you visit the shipwreck, bring all necessities with you as there are no facilities in this secluded bay. A sun umbrella is a must, as the heat radiates off the white cliffs and there is no shade on the beach to get away from it, especially at midday and through mid-afternoon.. For this reason, and the fact it is so popular and can get VERY busy, the best times to visit are either early in the morning or after 4pm. So, whether it is a relaxing break in the sun, an action packed adventure, or a fun family holiday you are looking for, no need to travel to the other side of the world – give Zante a try, the only problem is you won’t want to leave!

NEW RESTAURANT UNVEILED AT PLANTSPLUS GARDEN CENTRE New restaurant opens after huge transformation

P

lantsplus Garden Centre has officially welcomed the opening of its new restaurant this May. The Newcastle branch of Berwick Garden Centre Ltd, near Ponteland, has created around 15 new jobs in the area.

Having undergone a huge transformation across the store for the past year, the restaurant will have its doors open to customers 7 days a week, throughout the year. Serving breakfast, lunches, light bites, coffee and cake, its commitment is to serve fresh, homemade food with locally sourced produce wherever possible. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options means there is something for everyone to enjoy. The outdoor seating area will also allow for dog owners to experience the restaurant looking out towards the plant department. Seating 250 people, Plantsplus is hoping to emulate the success of both Berwick and Dunbar Garden Centre restaurants, with Dunbar holding a Taste Our Best award from Visit Scotland – awardees must keep food miles to a minimum; show information about where your food has 30

A bright and sunny area tucked around the corner of the restaurant will be kept for the use of parties, visiting groups, and private functions. If you would like to book this area, please contact the centre on the details at the bottom of the page. The addition of the restaurant will bring Plantsplus up to speed with customer expectation of garden centres as a day-out shopping experience. The store has increased its retail offerings to include books, gifts, cards and pet supplies and is also continuing with the upgrading of its nursery facilities. Work is continuing around the store with as little disruption to customers as possible, with the carpark to be resurfaced and the front entrance to be renovated. Customers were directed

The addition of the restaurant makes Plantsplus a day-out shopping experience through the nursery last month whilst builders were addressing the new entrance, and with it being the height of growing season it was a fantastic time to really see into the heart of the nursery and the garden centre’s core activity. Spring into Summer

WITH BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

A

s the days grow longer and warmer and we dare to throw open the windows and doors to welcome in the fresh air, many people’s thoughts will turn to spring cleaning. Helen Ross and her Bright & Beautiful team keep the homes of North Tyneside clean and sparkling all year round but did you know that cleaning our houses at this time of year has a rich and varied history? The Chinese have an ancient tradition of cleaning their homes ahead of the new year, which occurs just shortly after the Western new year. They sweep the floors to get rid of any bad luck or misfortune that may have accumulated during the previous year. As well as having its origins in history, spring cleaning also has a lot to do with biology. In the winter, the shorter days mean we are exposed to less sunlight and this reduced exposure to light produces melatonin in the body, the hormone that produces sleepiness. When the days start getting longer and lighter we produce less melatonin and feel more energetic.

At this time of year we want to be able to enjoy our free time – not be ironing, washing windows or mopping floors all weekend.

Helen, who runs the award winning Bright & Beautiful domestic housekeeping service in North Tyneside, looks after homes across the area, delivering the highest standards of cleaning, tidying and laundry. Helen says: “At this time of year we want to be able to enjoy our free time and make the most of the warmer weather – not be ironing, washing windows or mopping floors all weekend. Coming home to a clean and fresh smelling home, with the washing done and put away by our professional trained housekeepers, well it’s enough to put a spring into anyone’s step!”

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 34

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS David Haswell, Managing Director of Bluebird Care in Newcastle, took the time to talk to Select Magazine to explain why many of their satisfied customers choose care in their own homes rather than a permanent move to residential care.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

Bluebird Care aims to deliver a specialist, individual care service that we would be happy for our family and our loved ones to receive.’

I

t’s an unshakeable tenet of society both old and new that nothing is lodged deeper in the human heart than the sanctuary you find behind your own front door. It’s indisputable, unmistakeable,

and it’s supposed to be untouchable. And yet for many, as health concerns begin to mount, that place of safety can begin to feel like it might very well begin to slip away. With many people facing one or more long term health conditions, the prospect of a move to residential care can cause untold worry and emotional distress. Luckily, as part of a much needed and overdue social care revolution, a solution may just be to hand, one that is tailored to individual care, right in the heart of your home.

Many in the UK are, however, either unaware or overwhelmed by the huge range of options available to those in need of specialist care, for younger and older people, their children and their families. It can often feel like you’re making your way through a minefield, and issues are not limited to older people. They can include dementia, Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis amongst others. Luckily for those in need of help, bespoke care options have become much more widely available, with many Home Care companies offering specialist services at affordable rates, which allow their customers to stay in control and in the homes and communities they value and depend upon. The United Kingdom Homecare Association (UKHCA) is the national professional body who promote the highest standards of care offered by homecare providers and can offer to help find agencies and organisations that can meet specialist care needs at home. One locally based care company, who are full members of UKHCA, Bluebird Care in Newcastle, took the time to talk to Select Magazine in an effort to raise awareness of the many options available and to explain why many of their satisfied customers choose care in their own homes rather than a permanent move to residential care. David Haswell of Bluebird Care said, ‘From the first day we opened our business, our customers have been at the heart of everything we do.’ He went on, ‘we have revolutionised the way that high quality, bespoke care is delivered in Newcastle, not only to those with specialist needs, but also to their families. Bluebird Care aims to deliver a specialist, individual care service that we would be happy for our family and our loved ones to receive.’ Indeed, to reinforce the point, Age UK stated in its ‘Briefing on the Health and Care of Older People (2017)’ that only 15% of people of their 80s and 6.5% of people in their 90s are not living with a longterm health condition. Age UK continues, that most people aged 60-84 are living with more than one long term health condition. ☞

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

Despite these figures, Age UK goes on to state that spending on older people’s social care fell ‘steeply to £7.75 billion pounds in 2013.’ Whilst spending on older peoples’ care has seen a small increase since then, the contentious issue was thrown into sharp focus during the 2017 General Election, when social care reform shot straight to the top of political agenda. Bluebird Care, Newcastle, is passionate about offering a homecare service which will significantly improve the lives of those in need of care at home. By providing a tailored, individual care service, Bluebird Care allows the customer to remain in control. This can include being surrounded by the things that matter most to them like personal belongings and family pets, but without sacrificing the care they need. In addition, as far as possible, Bluebird will keep staff changes to a minimum to maintain familiarity. In the light of a much-needed social care revolution, Bluebird will also ensure that every part of the service they deliver is driven by the customer. Finally, an unmistakeable benefit of a reliable, friendly and efficient homecare service, is the alleviation one of the most troubling aspects of our modern society – that of loneliness. Older people can often go weeks or even months without seeing anyone, and with their much needed ‘Loneliness Campaign’, Bluebird is determined to combat the debilitating effects of isolation by continuing to improve its service to all customers. 38

BUSINESS

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR WEBSITE Whether you’re a small business, sole trader or have a site as a hobby or side-hustle, having a good website is essential. Aube Creative share their 10 ways to make sure your website is as easy to use (and as user-friendly) as possible... MAKE IT IS SMARTPHONE-FRIENDLY

We live in a Smartphone Society (Google claims 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site they had trouble accessing and 40% visit a competitor’s site instead) so your website must display beautifully on mobile phones and tablets.

MAKE SURE IT LOADS QUICKLY

ALWAYS USE RELEVANT IMAGERY

If a full-on photo shoot is out of the question you can always use good quality stock photography instead. Make sure the images match what your content is explaining. Avoid using images from free stock libraries which everyone uses over and over again.

People have less patience these days. Always make sure your website loads quickly and presents them what they want to see and sharpish. Faster speeds also improve your overall Google ranking. Good quality hosting always helps.

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!

MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE

CALLS-TO-ACTION

Develop an SEO strategy. Consider the search terms your audience might use to find you. Include content that's relevant: how-to videos, blog articles, e-books...

MAKE IT EASY TO NAVIGATE

Stick to navigation protocols people have come to expect. Always ensure navigation buttons are obvious and easily identifiable (towards the top of the page is best) and that all your links are working correctly so the user can quickly switch from page to page.

DISPLAY A STRONG CONSISTENT BRAND MESSAGE

Project the right image. Position your logo and core message in the top left hand corner. It’s the part of the screen to which our eyes are most naturally drawn.

Keep it really simple. Don't bombard your readers with jargon only you and your team can understand. If necessary, use a glossary. And avoid spelling mistakes.

What do you want people to do once they've landed on your website? CTA buttons are one of the many elements used to indicate the next action a user should take. Example call-toactions are: Download your Price List, Newsletter sign-up, Enter a competition...

DON'T FORGET YOUR CONTACT INFO Make it VERY easy for people to get in touch with you. You'd be surprised how many websites don't display correct contact info on every page. And it's so important!

DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

Your website is usually the first glimpse a potential new customer will get of your business. And first impressions last forever. Asking a professional to help can often save you time and money while you focus on developing your business instead.

NEED SOME HELP? Founded in 2008 aube=creative loves helping customers to create websites their own customers will love to use. Consultations are FREE. Call Paul on 079393 02550. Or visit aubecreative.co.uk 50
