SECURE YOUR DECISION-MAKING POWER! Having prepared their Will, many people assume their affairs are safely taken care of and stop there. Introducing STAIRLUX By Westline With over 30 years professional experience, Westline are a family run company who designs, manufactures and fits custom-made luxury stairs and beautiful balconies along with balustrades.

W

estline know that a unique, made-to-order, staircase can become the ultimate focal design feature in an attractive home and have introduced the perfect product, StairLux, the next step in staircase design.

THE NEXT STEP: Customers can choose from steel, oak, stainless steel and glass, to customise staircase treads and frames.

A high-end, customisable product, StairLux allows customers to become their own designer and create the staircase of their dreams. Experts in their field, Westline works closely with customers, from conception to completion. Using quality materials, customers can choose from steel, oak, stainless steel and glass, to customise staircase treads, frames, balustrades/balconies and associated products. Westline customer, Judith Donkin, from Rowlands Gill, purchased a StairLux staircase in June 2017. Speaking of her experience, Judith said: “Our previous staircase was made out of mahogany wood and it got to the stage where it was looking old and outdated, so we wanted to modernise it. “I had a picture in my mind as to how I wanted my new staircase to look, having been inspired by the glass staircases you see in retail shops. “I had heard of Westline previously as I used to work in Birtley where Westline are based, and so

decided to take a visit to their showroom to see what they had to offer. They had on display a beautiful glass and wooden staircase which was exactly what I had pictured in my head. “After visiting the showroom, one of Westline’s expert team, Paul, came to our home to measure out the space and discuss our specification. Originally I wanted glass panels with an oak step, but Paul recommended an all glass as he believed this would better suit the modern design I was after. As I hadn’t viewed an all glass staircase, I was invited to look at a previous project, but I had faith in Paul’s expertise and ordered the full glass. I’m glad I did as I absolutely love it! It’s exactly what I wanted. “I don’t know anyone else who has a staircase like mine and when friends and family come to visit they are all wowed. “I would definitely recommend Westline. They are a lovely family run business who were very professional and friendly throughout the whole process. Their customer service was brilliant and they also offered aftercare which was great.” Westline help their customers to create their dream home. KEY SPRING INTERIOR TRENDS Velvet sofas, brass and botanicals. Here are the key current trends to bring into your home this spring.

All items Furniture Village 16

INTERIORS

maximalism

Although this may seem a tricky trend to get right, in some ways you can’t really go wrong with a more-is-more approach: layer up cushions and throws in clashing patterns and contrasting colours, add some bold, bright glassware and throw in a statement rug (an accessory that is definitely having a moment), and you’re pretty much there. As a sideline to this trend, bold, patterned wallpaper - on all four walls - is also being revived in a big way.

botanicals

Botanicals continue to be top of the hit list for freshening up our homes - searches for pictures of house plants spiked towards the end of last year, as did queries on how to keep them alive. Leafy palms, fiddleleaf figs and hardy succulents are among the low-maintenance options that are proving particularly popular. We’re also searching for botanical motifs on fabrics and wallpapers, but of the subtle, traditional variety, rather than the tropical designs that have been splashed all over cushions of late.

green

Green is the colour of choice - not just the light, bright green of new leaves that was Greenery, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2017, but darker forest tones, strong jades and pale minty shades. Calke Green is one of Farrow & Ball’s key colours for 2018, which it describes as “a rich sage with a dark, masculine feel” - and, incidentally, the brand’s colour consultant, Joa Studholme, suggests pairing it with Pitch Blue, a cross between cobalt and cornflower, for an “intense yet perfectly balanced combination that is filled with fun and optimism”.

Flatweave Rug, £10, JD Williams

brass

Brass is becoming the metal of choice as we move on from copper and rose gold, particularly when teamed with marble in kitchens and bathrooms. Some are predicting a return to polished chrome this year, but for now we’re sticking with warm metallic tones and matt, brushed finishes.

The velvet sofa is a trend that is showing no sign of stopping, just make sure you're bold with your colour choice. select 17

PEACHY: The 5A range from Dorma at Dunelm

pastels

Not just blush pink, but also peach and lilac - are widely thought to be the hot colours for this year, especially on walls, where they could potentially take over from grey. Bathrooms are also getting in on the act, with companies introducing bathroom suites in powdery hues. A touch of black or charcoal grey will neutralise the sugariness pastels bring, and mixing in accents of richer tones such as terracotta will help keep the look current. Look out for salmon pink and sage green, a colour combination that is appearing everywhere.

boho

A slightly toned-down version of this is the boho look, which has made a comeback from its noughties heyday, albeit in a more modern, sophisticated iteration. Texture is key to this look, in the form of woven fabrics, rattan furniture and cushions embellished with appliqué and fringing. Layer up rugs in muted tones with embroidered floor cushions and poufs to add instant interest and warmth.

PURE SHORES: Writer Mark Twain once said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’

Magical Mauritius Hays personal travel consultant, Brittany Harrison (pictured left), is passionate about travel and enjoys passing on her recommendations to potential customers. Here she shares her own experience of a visit to the beautiful island nation of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. 22

M

auritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, best known for its beautiful powder white beaches, turquoise waters and luxury resorts.

Whether you like to chill out on the beach or take on a more active holiday, there is something for everyone in Mauritius. Over 100,000 British tourists visit the island every year. If you are a citizen of the EU, USA, Australia, Canada and a number of other countries you won’t need a visa, initial entry is granted for 3 months. There is only one airport on the island, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. You can fly direct from London Heathrow with Air Mauritius or British Airways. Connecting flights from regional airports are also available. A direct flight from London Heathrow takes approximately 12 hours. Mauritius is a year round destination, ideal for winter sun, and this is considered the best time to go weather wise. High season is between December – February, with average temperatures between 25c and 33c but there is a slight risk of cyclones at this time. December is also the best month for snorkelling and diving. May – September is low season, with cooler average temperatures between 18c and 25c. There are many different attractions and tours that you can do on the island. Many tour operators offer full day trips that cover various attractions in one day. My favourite tour was Dodo’s trail, this was around 10 hours included a visit to the capital Port Louis and the central market. On the way there we stopped off at Fort Adelaide and enjoyed magnificent views over the town and harbour. After Port Louis we went to a local restaurant, Escale Creole – Table d’Hotes for an authentic Mauritian lunch. The hosts were amazing and it really felt like we were at a family meal, we were presented with Mauritian specialities such as Creole sausages, chicken

curry and fricasseed cabbage, all served with a local flavoured rum. We then headed to the Blue Penny Museum and Caudan Waterfront – a modern shopping centre. I also went on a full day scenic tour, the Wild South West. Another long day but a great experience we visited Chamarel Waterfall, 7-Coloured Earth, La Rhumerie de Chamarel, Grand Bassin, Trou aux Cerfs and a ship model factory. The highlight for me was La Rhumerie de Chamarel, it was really interesting to find out how the local rum is made and also sample the different flavours. If you are into hiking, then Black River Gorges National Park is for you! It is recommended you go with a local guide as it is easy to get lost. Mauritius is often a go to destination for weddings and honeymoons, but don’t let that put you off. This is also a great destination for families. With plenty of history, culture and attractions on offer, it is not just for those who want to relax in the sun all day. Writer Mark Twain once said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’ I have no hesitation in recommending Mauritius, and we have all year round deals and offers available. As your Hays personal travel consultant you only need to deal with me direct, so rest assured I'll be at the end of the phone or email for any assistance you may need. Booking the perfect holiday for the you is my highest priority, from a weekend away to a dream wedding abroad, I aim to make the whole experience first class. Being part of the UK's largest independent travel company makes me extremely competitive on price, and you'll also have peace of mind that your holiday is financially protected. HEALTH

LOOKING AFTER YOUR EYES Our sight is so precious, here Kevin Gray of Robert Green and Partners gives advice on looking after your eyes

T

he best way to check on the health of your eyes is a regular sight test with an optometrist who can often pick up some eye problems before they cause significant damage to your sight. Some eye problems such as glaucoma will

not cause symptoms for a long time and early detection, as with most things, makes treatment easier and more effective. Patients I see often ask for advice on maintaining eye health, in particular, with regard to diet. Clearly a healthy diet is beneficial to everyone, but there are some specific foods that can be valuable for eyes. Green leafy vegetables such as kale or spinach are high in micro-nutrients which may delay the onset of age-related macula degeneration (AMD) and cataract, and oily fish, fruit and nuts are good too. Supplements, whilst no substitute for a healthy diet might be appropriate in some individuals. Being overweight, whilst not directly affecting eyesight, substantially increases the risks of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke, all of which pose significant risk of damaging your eyes. Many people don’t realise that smoking doubles the risk of developing AMD, and increases the risk of cataract too, so quitting is important. UVA and UVB in sunlight is harmful to eyes, especially with regard to cataract, and may well be a factor in other eye conditions including AMD. Good quality sunglasses carrying the CE marking will offer protection, especially for people who work outdoors or who have outdoor leisure pursuits, and particularly abroad, at high altitude, or where 24

there is reflected light from snow, the beach or on water. Many regular prescription spectacles can have UV protection built in to them and most prescriptions can be made up as sunglasses. Also, many contact lens brands include UV filters. In addition patients who have had cataract surgery might also benefit from extra protection from harmful rays. Your optometrist can offer specific advice on all of these. Eye injuries at work, in the garden and from DIY are a regular presentation at casualty departments, as are sports related injuries. Wearing appropriate protective spectacles or goggles whilst carrying out these activities is essential. The more dangerous sports for eyes are squash, badminton, tennis and cricket, and sports safety goggles, including prescriptions, are widely available and are highly recommended. Oh yes, and be careful when opening the bubbly too! If you haven’t had an eye examination then booking one is easy. You can find a local optometrist on the NHS choices website, and ask friends or colleagues if there is one they would particularly recommend.

TEETH STRAIGHTENING AT SHIREMOOR DENTAL PRACTICE

Teeth straightening used to be a slow and painful process, but modern solutions at Shiremoor Dental Practice could have you smiling within months.

I

f you are embarrassed about your teeth that are not straight, or you have large gaps between your teeth, modern orthodontics (teeth straightening) now offers a range of solutions.

Also known as discreet or invisible braces, teeth can be straightened and smiles aligned in a matter of months with excellent aesthetic results. Invisible braces are a popular choice with adults who have professional careers and don’t feel comfortable wearing unsightly ‘train track’ braces for months on end. The technology behind invisible orthodontics is highly advanced and often gives patients a much shorter treatment time, depending on their individual cases. Some systems are completely removable, allowing you to take the aligners out when eating or drinking. Other systems have clear brackets and tooth coloured wire, making them hardly noticeable.

All orthodontic treatment requires good oral hygiene habits by the patient and regular visits to the practice for check-ups and adjustments.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Compared to other orthodontic treatments Quick Straight Teeth is one of the most cost effective. This is due to the shorter treatment time required. Prices can start from as little as £1399, which includes your brace, your retainer and teeth whitening. For those patients who proceed to treatment we offer competitive prices and also a selection of affordable finance options.

DOES IT HURT?

As with many orthodontic treatments you may notice some slight discomfort- particularly when initially fitted or tightened. This is completely normal and can be eased with over the counter painkillers.

Removable Braces

It is recommended that you wear a retainer following treatment to stop your teeth from relapsing to their original position. You can have a removable or fixed retainer depending on your personal needs and lifestyle. This can be discussed with our Dentist. HAVE YOU DISCOVERED YOUR RELAXED GLAMOUR? British womenswear brand Mint Velvet have opened their first North East stand-alone boutique at Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth

M

int Velvet started with passion and a desire by three friends and working mothers (Liz Houghton, Jane Rawlings and Lisa Agar-Rea) who identified their own needs and desires to wear the trends in a relaxed way, to be fashionable, but not feel hampered by it, and for luxury without the matching price tag.

They set to design a collection which was contemporary, stylish with an everyday feel, and perfect for the 28

And, they have recently opened their newest boutique in Morpeth, bringing their relaxed glamour collections right to your doorstep! Mint Velvet curates the ultimate wardrobe to provide stress-free dressing by taking the trends and relaxing them whilst adding tiny details to give each piece a contemporary edge. The collections keep in mind practicality so, that even on the busiest of days, you will look

effortlessly stylish. Their gorgeous Hygge range (pronounced heu-gah) is inspired by Liz’s (MV’s founder) trip to Copenhagen where she discovered the Dane’s Hygge way of life. Liz fell in love with the Scandi simplicity, and so the Hygge collection was born. The collection is packed full of super soft knits, sumptuous layering pieces and cosy cold weather accessories perfect for those tucked in winter nights, featuring luxe slippers and gowns, cashmere knits and cable knit cardis and luxurious lounge-wear detailed with lace,

Hand picking the softest yarns, cosiest cuts and most tactile textures, the Hygge collection will give you a relaxing and much deserved hug, and is worth staying in, and snuggled up, for. The brand has also included a curated edit of other brands to complement the different elements that the collection follows – Hygge REVIVE, Hygge RELAX, and Hygge HOME. This includes handcrafted body brushes from Iris Hantverk, bath products by L.A Bruket, Cashmere and Wool care products by The Laundress and Christmas spice chocolate by the Coco Chocolatier. Their latest collection, Wilderness, is Scandi and Nordic log-cabin weekend-chic at its finest! Shades of pale mocha and creams with a soft raspberry highlight pack with blue denim for an authentic casual feel. Texture is as always key with new lofty knit stitches, yarns, tassel and pompom trims. “We believe shopping should be easy and enjoyable, so we put our hearts and souls into MV to ensure that we continue to be a brand that you love as much as we do.” (Liz, MV Founder) Looking for something special

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS David Haswell, Managing Director of Bluebird Care in Newcastle, took the time to talk to Select Magazine to explain why many of their satisfied customers choose care in their own homes rather than a permanent move to residential care. 30

Bluebird Care aims to deliver a specialist, individual care service that we would be happy for our family and our loved ones to receive.’

I

t’s an unshakeable tenet of society both old and new that nothing is lodged deeper in the human heart than the sanctuary you find behind your own front door. It’s indisputable, unmistakeable,

and it’s supposed to be untouchable. And yet for many, as health concerns begin to mount, that place of safety can begin to feel like it might very well begin to slip away. With many people facing one or more long term health conditions, the prospect of a move to residential care can cause untold worry and emotional distress. Luckily, as part of a much needed and overdue social care revolution, a solution may just be to hand, one that is tailored to individual care, right in the heart of your home.

Many in the UK are, however, either unaware or overwhelmed by the huge range of options available to those in need of specialist care, for younger and older people, their children and their families. It can often feel like you’re making your way through a minefield, and issues are not limited to older people. They can include dementia, Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis amongst others. Luckily for those in need of help, bespoke care options have become much more widely available, with many Home Care companies offering specialist services at affordable rates, which allow their customers to stay in control and in the homes and communities they value and depend upon. The United Kingdom Homecare Association (UKHCA) is the national professional body who promote the highest standards of care offered by homecare providers and can offer to help find agencies and organisations that can meet specialist care needs at home. One locally based care company, who are full members of UKHCA, Bluebird Care in Newcastle, took the time to talk to Select Magazine in an effort to raise awareness of the many options available and to explain why many of their satisfied customers choose care in their own homes rather than a permanent move to residential care. David Haswell of Bluebird Care said, ‘From the first day we opened our business, our customers have been at the heart of everything we do.’ He went on, ‘we have revolutionised the way that high quality, bespoke care is delivered in Newcastle, not only to those with specialist needs, but also to their families. Bluebird Care aims to deliver a specialist, individual care service that we would be happy for our family and our loved ones to receive.’ Indeed, to reinforce the point, Age UK stated in its ‘Briefing on the Health and Care of Older People (2017)’ that only 15% of people of their 80s and 6.5% of people in their 90s are not living with a long-term health condition. Age UK continues, that most people aged 60-84 are living with more than select 31

one long term health condition. Despite these figures, Age UK goes on to state that spending on older people’s social care fell ‘steeply to £7.75 billion pounds in 2013.’ Whilst spending on older peoples’ care has seen a small increase since then, the contentious issue was thrown into sharp focus during the 2017 General Election, when social care reform shot straight to the top of political agenda. Bluebird Care, Newcastle, is passionate about offering a homecare service which will significantly improve the lives of those in need of care at home. By providing a tailored, individual care service, Bluebird Care allows the customer to remain in control. This can include being surrounded by the things that matter most to them like personal belongings and family pets, but without sacrificing the care they need. In addition, as far as possible, Bluebird will keep staff changes to a minimum to maintain familiarity. In the light of a much-needed social care revolution, Bluebird will also ensure that every part of the service they deliver is driven by the customer. Finally, an unmistakeable benefit of a reliable, friendly and efficient homecare service, is the alleviation one of the most troubling aspects of our modern society – that of loneliness. Older people can often go weeks or even months without seeing anyone, and with their much needed ‘Loneliness Campaign’, Bluebird is determined to combat the debilitating effects of isolation by continuing to improve its service to all customers. 32

THE TREATMENT OF HAYFEVER WITH ACUPUNCTURE Feras Jerjis, Traditional Acupuncturist at Heaton Acupuncture Clinic shares his experience in the treatment of hayfever

I

have a very vivid memory of sitting in a small lecture room at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York more than twenty years ago, listening to a lecture about seasonal allergens and how the body copes with them. When the lecturer noticed a slight lull in the class’s concentration, he asked for a volunteer who suffered from hay fever. The volunteer was a local shiatsu practitioner who exhibited the typical puffiness and redness in her eyes, combined with the occasional stream from her nostrils. Within a few minutes he had asked her several questions, explained what he was going to do and proceeded to do it. He went back to his lecture and after ten minutes or so the class’s attention was distracted yet again as we heard her utter the words “I can breathe through my nose now”. Twenty years down the line as an acupuncturist I am still amazed at how quickly treatment can work for something like hay fever. In our clinic we routinely use acupuncture to calm down an over excited immune system and work with people who often need to stay away from animal fur, house

mites, feathers, cut grass, hay and rapeseed fields. For some people though there is a morbid acceptance that they need to be on antihistamines for a long time, antihistamines tend to work very well in the short term, however they work by suppressing the symptoms and do not get to the route of the issue. With acupuncture we seek to establish balance rather than suppress symptoms, so typically a consultation would take an hour or so whereby we ask lots of questions until there is clarity about the best way to treat the person. So, as we head towards the hay fever season it is useful, at least for some people, to know that they have acupuncture as an additional option. For further information call 0191 2871042 or visit www.heatonacupuncture.co.uk.

LIFESTYLE

The

Good Life If you fancy becoming self sufficient and producing your own tasty homegrown vegetables, then here are ten tips for starting your own vegetable patch:

1

4

2

5 6

What do your family eat? It’s all very well having a beautiful array of beetroot but if you can’t stand eating it, it’ll all go to waste. Always have a think about what your household would utilise best and start from there! Consider what is likely to thrive best depending on the month. For example, with the risk of frost being low, more tender vegetables such as courgettes and tomatoes have a better chance to thrive in June.

3

Involve the family, if your children/partner or housemates have a vested interest in what may end up on their plates, it will always help to have an extra pair of eyes or hands.

Do your research! There are several various diseases that can affect your plants and for each one, a quick Google search will bring up several forums of people having the same problem and the things they’ve tried/cures they’ve found. Official websites are great for learning your craft but on a forum you will likely discover a neat trick using common household items.

Weed, weed, weed! It’s the most important job, it will give your vegetables space to grow and will ensure there’s no pesky weed taking your crops food, light or water! Having said that, make sure you know the difference between the weeds and the flowering plants. Start small, you don’t need a jungle of potential dinners the first time you start growing your own vegetables. Start out growing easy to tend vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage or peas. They require minimal effort and once you’ve got the hang of the basics; you’ll be more confident when you come to planting other items.

7

Don’t have a big garden? Not a problem! There’s a misconception that you need a huge space to be able to have a vegetable patch. There are several techniques you can learn to make the most out of a small space and even high rise flat dwellers can grow things in a container or pot. And not just herbs; carrots, beetroot, beans and cauliflower are just four examples of foods that can be grown in pots or containers.

8 9

Ask your local garden centre for advice. Internet searching is very handy but sometimes it is nice to chat to someone directly and your local garden centre will have a wealth of information just waiting to be tapped into by talking to the staff. Keep going. There are things you can grow all throughout the year and many people find once they’ve grown and tasted their own produce, it’s a difficult habit to give up! Summer is not the only time you can benefit from your own hard work and all year gardening is a relaxing, fun and rewarding hobby.

10

Relax! Remember that you can do everything you’re supposed to do and some bad weather, or a lack of abundant growth can be disheartening. But it isn’t your fault and you shouldn’t give up after one bad harvest. Every gardener will tell you that sometimes, for whatever reason, your efforts just don’t bear fruit (or vegetables!).

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 46

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
