HANDS ON FUN AT ROCKPOOL SCHOOL FOR AN EXCITING WAY TO LEARN ABOUT SEA LIFE, LET YOUR CHILDREN PAY A VISIT TO ROCKPOOL SCHOOL.

B

est described as an attractive sea aquarium, a rockpool is an oasis at low tide for small sea-life creatures. Crabs, starfish, sea snails and many more marine species call rockpools home, and they are a fascinating environment to watch and study. Rockpools are an exciting way for children to learn about some of our sea life, but they can be quite hard to find. So, with this in mind, we are pleased to introduce you to a brand new Rockpool School, right here in the heart of the North East, allowing children to experience first-hand the wonderful creatures and sea life that call rockpools home. Rockpool School was establish in March 2017 by Nicola Everitt who, after seeing the pure joy and excitement on children's faces who live so close to the coast but never manage to experience rockpool animals first-hand, saw an ideal opportunity to give them that chance. She established the school (which is ran by locally qualified Marine Biologists) to give local children a hands on rockpool animal fun and learning experience, offering workshops, birthday parties and school visits. Nicola herself, has always been interested in our seas and everything within them, and regards herself extremely lucky to be in the process of completing her PhD in Marine Science. She has been very honoured to have been able to carry out cetacean research, offshore wind farm research and

possible impacts on surrounding marine life. She has also been able to work with, and train, both seals and sea lions. She is therefore very passionate to be able to share what she has learnt in a fun and educational manner. Sessions provided by Nicola are tailored to individual needs and workshop type, and include a variety of rockpool animals, including crabs, starfish, brittle stars, urchins, sea snails, hermit crabs and anemones. The individuals not only gain a hands on learning experience, they also learn amazing facts about these animals. She can tailor each workshop to every occasion, this may also include crafts, making of marine slime, crab lining, decorating treasure chests with sea glass and shells and many more. The school has already inspired many children to further their learning on this topic, with some even going on to attend Marine Biology Summer schools. The school has quickly earned a fantastic reputation, receiving 5 star rating from both schools and satisfied parents. Comments have included ‘very likely to recommend these session’, ‘very satisfied and would use the service again’, ‘children 100% benefit from the workshops’, ‘very pleasant staff and appropriate speak for the children's age’, ‘brilliantly interactive and hands on’. For more details about the school and upcoming events, visit www.rockpoolschool.co.uk or facebook.com/ rockpoolschool or call Nicola on 07704 336957.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

S

ummer and Wimbledon go hand in hand. The most famous tennis tournament in the world epitomises everything that is good about the British summer and, during Wimbledon fortnight, tennis courts all around the country see a huge rise in demand.

However, in recent years, more and more people are taking up the sport, not only in the summer months, but all year round and, with Andy Murray the reigning Wimbledon Champion and world number one, the sport has seen a real resurgence. With this in mind, we introduce you to a tennis club right on your doorstep, catering for all ages and all abilities. Gosforth Lawn Tennis club is a fantastic local venue, providing social tennis for every age group and every ability. If you are just starting your tennis career, are an experienced player looking to find a team to play for, or are simply seeking a place to enjoy a social game of tennis at a high quality venue, Gosforth Lawn Tennis Club is the ideal place. The club offers coaching sessions for all abilities, whether you are just taking up the sport and worried about making a fool of yourself, or just want to tweak your serve and backhand. The coaching team have over 50 years of combined experience, working with all standards and abilities, and is headed up by

Level 4 Senior Club Coaches. The coaching philosophy at the club is not to produce world class champions, but to turn out well rounded players that love playing tennis in a club environment and, if they play for their school, university, work or local club, they have done their job! Gosforth Lawn Tennis Club offers an extensive Junior Programme catering for players of all ages and abilities. Their junior programme is headed up by Andrew Reed (Level 4 Senior Club Coach) with the support of Carlos Caldeira (Level 4 Senior Club Coach) who are ably assisted by Level 1 coaching assistants, James Schofield and Cameron Haswell. The coaching programme is well supported, with the help of ten competition organisers, who provide regular competitive opportunities for junior players. All of their coaches are fully licensed with the LTA, have satisfactory CRB and are first aid approval. The programme typically caters for 80-100 junior players for all ages, who are supported by their coaches throughout their development. Competitive opportunities are provided through match play evenings, ratings tournaments, junior tournaments and league teams which cater for all standards. The clubs current programme consists of 15 sessions which are designed to suit the needs of the individual player. These sessions focus on players ‘all-round’ skills in Agility, Balance and Coordination, and the technical development of players, as well as an

introduction to competitive tennis. Coaching is also available for adults, both as part of a group session on an individual one-onone basis. If you are looking to play in a competitive environment, and to put your new skills in to a match situation, the club provides plenty of opportunities. They play every weekend on both Saturday and Sunday starting at 1pm, and on a Wednesday evening (summer time) at 6pm, where members join in the mixed play. There are also ladies and men’s practice evenings during the league season, giving opportunities for team selection. The club has 3 ladies, 4 men’s, several veterans teams, as well as junior teams entered in the local leagues. Memberships are available from only £120 per year, and juniors under 10 can join for as little as £12 per year! So, whether you are aiming to follow in Andy Murray’s footsteps, have a child interested in taking up the sport, or are simply looking to try and new sport and meet like-minded people, the Gosforth Lawn Tennis Club is the perfect environment for you! www.gosforthlawntennisclub.co.uk Gosforth Lawn Tennis Club, West Avenue Gosforth, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE3 4ES

WORRIED ABOUT HEARING LOSS? It is estimated that there are more than 11 million people in the UK with some degree of hearing impairment or deafness (that’s about 1 in 6 people). What is the biggest cause of hearing loss?

What should I do if I suspect I’ve got a hearing loss?

Why is hearing loss an increasing issue in modern society?

What different kind of hearing aids are available?

Age-related hearing loss is the most common cause; however noise damage is a close second. Noisy environments at work, at concerts or events can have a negative impact on your hearing.

As a standard, people who are approaching retirement age tend to be a lot more social than those in times gone by. Social interaction relies largely on hearing, so declining hearing can have a large impact on the quality of our social lives. We are becoming a much more health-conscious society which means people are willing to present hearing issues to doctors and consultants more readily so we can combat the issue earlier.

How can I tell if I have hearing loss?

If you are suffering from hearing loss, you may be experiencing one or many of these symptoms; difficulty understanding words - especially when there is a lot of background noise, struggling to hear in noisy groups, having to turn the television or radio up to a high volume, difficulty hearing the telephone or doorbell, struggling to determine which direction noise is coming from, asking people to repeat themselves, misunderstanding what people say, feeling tired or stressed due to having to concentrate when listening, avoidance of social settings and finding one to one conversation difficult.

Your first course of action would be to have a hearing test, this should be a full and comprehensive taking into account the health of your ear and include various testing elements in order to gain a complete view of your current hearing health.

Suitability for hearing aids depend largely on the following factors; degree of loss, shape of ear/canal and personal preference. There are behind-the-ear hearing aids (BTE) which sits comfortably at the back of the outer ear, passing the sound through a tube to a custom ear mould. Receiverin-canal (RIC) aids use a tiny speaker in the ear canal and has a less blocked feeling that a behind the ear aid. the in-the-ear (ITE) and in-the-canal (ITC) aids sit in your outer ear and your ear canal respectively while a completely-in-canal (CIC) aid is the most discreet option and almost invisible – with the aid sitting deep and securely in the ear canal.

How often do hearing aids need replaced?

Hearing aids now last longer than they once did thanks to advances in technology. A properly cared for hearing aid should give you many years of enjoyment provided your hearing loss does not worsen rapidly. We do recommend replacing your hearing aids every 5 years or so. It’s important to take care of your ears, which is why at My Hearing Clinic, they're there to cover all aspects of hearing health. Give them a call today to find out more on 0191 5197291.

THYME FOR SOMETHING TASTY

If you are looking for a hearty, home cooked breakfast or lunch, then we think we have found just the place in the heart of South Gosforth.

T

hyme Square Café, based on Station Road in South Gosforth, serves a good selection of breakfast and lunch options, to eat in or take away, and is gaining a reputation locally for the quality of its food and levels of service. The emphasis at Thyme Square Cafe is on good honest home cooked food, made with fresh local produce and served up in good sized portions. The menu is full of breakfast and lunch choices, catering for everyone, from those with a healthy appetite, to those after a healthy choice. They have a range of breakfast options, hearty main dishes, a good selection of ciabatta melts, (including Kentucky chicken, jalapeno, chorizo and cheese, and bacon brie and cranberry), as well as Sunday lunches and an ever changing specials board. The specials board includes gluten free meals, lunches (Lentil Lasagne a particular favourite) and extra breakfast serving, including the ever popular Eggs Benedict. My wife and I visited one Saturday lunchtime after a morning of shopping around the town, and the cafe was buzzing with patrons. The café itself is bright but cosy, seating 24, and decorated with an eclectic range of vintage memorabilia. As I was feeling quite peckish, I opted for the Fully Loaded Burger, described as a half-pound burger made with steak mince, with bacon, cheese, mayo, tomato relish and gherkins. The burger comes with coleslaw and fries (that should fill the gap I thought!). My wife chose the Eggy

Creamed Bagel stuffed with sausage and bacon and served with hash browns and beans, a brunch she thought not quite as filling as mine – that was until the dishes arrived! My burger was stacked full of homemade fresh ingredients, so big that, for the only time I can remember, I had to actually use a knife and folk to eat it! Chips were aplenty and decidedly homemade in taste, as was the side helping of coleslaw. My wife's bagel was tasty and very satisfying and set her up for the day.

TAKE A PEEK AT PACKHORSE YARD SET JUST OFF NEWGATE STREET IN THE HEART OF MORPETH, PACKHORSE YARD IS HOME TO A FINE SELECTION OF LOCAL INDEPENDENT RETAILERS.

D

avid Chambers and Les Sage are two of the five strong Packhorse Yard development team, they told us "We couldn't be happier with the public response to this development since opening in June last year. When we purchased the old warehouse and offices based on Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, we had exciting plans to offer unique and affordable opportunities to local independent retailers. We are extremely proud of what each business has achieved so far and love watching them grow from strength to strength as we approach our first anniversary. We hope that the award-winning Packhorse Yard continues to become a popular shopping destination for all visitors to Morpeth in the future." The yard is home to half a dozen units, all bringing something unique to the town. The first shop along the alleyway is an independent model shop owned by Jim and Joanne Ord, appropriately named J and J models, and in June 2017 the shop will be celebrating its first birthday in Packhorse Yard. Prior to opening their unit in the yard, they sold online and at specialist fairs, something they still continue to do. They sell a wide range of Model Railway Accessories, (Hornby, Bachmann etc) Kits, (Airfix, Pocketbond etc.) Humbrol paint and Die cast vehicles. They are always happy to source individual items for customers, and also buy good quality second hand items. Keep up to date with their latest news by signing up to their newsletter on their website at www.jandjmodels.co.uk, or follow them on facebook. The yard is also home to Willow Home & Gift, an independent, family run gift shop where you can discover a wide selection of affordable and unique gifts anything from a handmade piece of glassware to a gift for a mischievous mutt, they’ve got everything covered. The store is passionate about supporting UK designers/makers, and stock a variety of locally designed or produced products, so you are sure to find something a little different that won't break the bank either. If it is antiques you are interested in, make sure you pop in to Perriss Antiques, home to some wonderful antiques, jewellery, silverware and trinkets. There is a huge selection available, with new stock

arriving every day. Find them on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest arrivals. Finally, Lateral Art, owned by Stephen and Fiona Greenway, sells artists materials from great brands that are often hard to find on the high street, as well as a wide range of artist’s papers and decorative and wrapping papers. The art range is accompanied by notebooks and journals from Leuchtturm 1917, Moleskine and Fabriano as well as Frenchic Furniture Paints and Decopatch papers, models and glues. The store wants to support local artists and run a monthly art competition. Visit www.lateralart.co.uk for further details. In an extension to the shop, The Lateral Art Studio allows the pair to offer classes in drawing and watercolour in the heart of Morpeth. The Studio is compact and allows small groups to get maximum benefit from sessions. They hope to grow their range of courses and welcome other artists, who may want to deliver courses, to use the studio. During the week, for a small hourly charge, the space is made available to local artists who just need a space to work or even just browse through their selection of art and craft books for inspiration. On Saturdays, and during school holidays, the Studio is used to provide drop-in sessions for all ages to enjoy the range of Decopatch products that the shop sells, visitors just choose their model and then use the Studio and its range of papers and glues to create a unique item to take home, or of course they can buy the materials to take home. Lateral Art can also provide Decopatch birthday party sets to give a creative alternative to party activities. Contact Stephen or Fiona if you are interested in attending or running classes or using the Studio on info@lateralart.co.uk So, next time you are in Morpeth, make sure you make time to venture off Newgate Street and explore the wonderful, unique, independent businesses in this wonderful setting. BEAUTY REVIEW

LOOK YOUNGER & MORE RADIANT WITH A NEW TREATMENT AT HÀNA BEAUTY CLINIC

Dawn Wilson tries out the innovative Guinot Hydraderm Cellular Energy Machine, a new addition to the acclaimed Hàna Beauty Clinic in Whitley Bay.

I

t’s perfectly natural to want to look as youthful as you feel inside. It is also important to know you have anti-ageing options that don’t involve surgery, expense or pain. Hydraderm Cellular Energy facials are an alternative to aesthetic medicine, such as Botox or fillers, with its range of anti-ageing, clinically proven treatments using a combination of Dynamic Ionisation, Thermal Energy and Lifting Stimulation. I was invited along to Hàna Beauty Clinic by Emma, the salon owner, to try this innovative new treatment. The clinic has yet again been awarded the status of Guinot Crown Salon 2017. This coveted title celebrates the highest achieving Guinot salons and spas in the UK and Ireland who demonstrate success, dedication and loyalty to the brand. By visiting a Crown Salon, clients can be confident that they are choosing a Guinot salon of the highest distinction with flawless principles in environment, customer care and treatment expertise, so I knew I was in good hands! My treatment began with a consultation on any issues I had with my skin, so Emma could target these areas. I have combination skin, but some really dry patches on my cheeks due to cold weather and central heating. Emma then left me to remove my top and lie on the bed, covering myself with a towel. She then began with a soothing welcome massage around neck and shoulders, followed by a thorough Cleanse and exfoliation. Next was the first step using the cellular energy machine, where Emma applied bespoke serum gels to my face, eyes, neck and décolleté. The gels were then massaged into my skin using metal rollers. Emma said that I might sometimes feel a tiny little charge of electricity over more sensitive areas however I feel nothing except the tiniest sensation under my nose, not remotely painful. These electrical charges cause the serums to be pushed into the skin and the current (dynamic ionisation) causes 'chaos ' within the cells waking them up, helping to regenerate and plump up the skin. Extraction of blocked pores/blackheads then occurs. The lift part of the facial is next, with lymphatic drainage

to remove toxins from the skin. Emma used the machine to stimulate my facial muscles, which tones and lifts muscles (this part can be done as a facial on its own as an intensive non-surgical face lift course). I could really feel my muscles contracting, so I knew it must be working! The final step was perfect for decongesting the skin, increasing the circulation and increasing energy within the cells, in other words giving you a real boost! Oxygenating cream is massaged into the skin with heated 'mini iron ' using thermal energy. This step was really soothing. Finally, Emma cleansed off all the products applied an eye and firming face mask, whilst giving me a wonderful hand and arm massage.

Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested! Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested! I'm still feeling the after effects a few days later, much longer than I've felt before from a facial. The cost of the facial I received was £92, and definitely worth the money, but prices start from as little as £50 for the Lift Facial, and they can be tailored to meet your specific needs. I would recommend giving the girls at Hana a call and they can advise you as to the best option for you. A course of treatments is advised for long lasting results, but a one off can be booked if you need a pick me up. (although I guarantee you'll be so pleased with how your skin looks and feels you'll really want to book more!) Why not take advantage of the offer on the advert opposite, and get 15% off any Cellular Energy treatment. Hàna Beauty Clinic, 24 Illfracombe Gardens, Whitley Bay, NE26 3SL. t is often said that make up is just make up and do just this. Rather than an obvious, surgical effect, it how we feel is what matters. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 38

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. ITALIAN TREATS BY THE SEA Richard Wilson decided to pay a visit to Links Art Gallery, a delightful cafe with lots on offer

O

n one of our many ‘blow the cobwebs’ morning walks along Whitley Bay beach, my wife and I decided to call in to Links Art Gallery for a satisfying breakfast and to set us up for our stroll. The Links Art Gallery is a unique art gallery and café located at Dukes Walk, Northern Promenade, Whitley Bay, ideally, situated between Whitley Bay town centre and St Mary’s Island. A ten minute wander along the beach will take you into the heart of Whitley Bay, or in the other direction to the historic and picturesque Saint Mary’s Lighthouse. The venue is home to a superb selection of art and gifts, all available to purchase, with the emphasis firmly on work by North East artists. We visited mid-morning on a Friday and there was a bustling atmosphere, with a number of tables and comfortable sofas already taken by couples and groups of friends. The walls are adorned with paintings, prints and photography from North East artists, and there is a fabulous selection of locally themed gifts. The café menu is heavily Italian influenced, with a good selection of ciabattas, salads and Focaccias, as well as Italian Breakfast specials, pancakes, soups and their extensive coffee and tea selections. I chose the Salsiccia, which is a toasted ciabatta with Cumberland sausage, caramelised onions and melted fontina cheese (a cheese I have never tasted before but am now a fan of!) whilst my wife opted for the Prosciutto, the Italian Stone Baked Focaccia filled with ham, emmenthal cheese and tomato.

Mine was a delicious fusion of flavours, extremely tasty and a real hearty filling – a definite thumbs up. My wife’s was fresh and packed with flavour, she particularly loved the fresh Italian bread. There is an appetizing choice of desserts, so it was an easy decision to try something sweet, but not as easy to select just one! After a lengthy deliberation I opted for the white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake, whilst the Cannoli Siciliani filled with sweet ricotta cheese caught my wife’s eye. Both desserts were fresh and light and set us up for our morning walk. The café menu also has an extensive range of coffees and teas, and they are proud to be associated with Bristot, a world leader in the production of exclusive coffee. In order to achieve this prestigious blend their experts set about conducting extensive and important botanical and agronomic research by revisiting the original blends’ countries of origin. The result is an exclusive coffee, unrivalled and with limited production. Before we left, we browsed the array of gifts and accessories as well as the excellent selection of greetings cards. Links Art Gallery is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee and a light snack whilst perusing, and possibly treating yourself to, some local art and gifts. THE JOY OF

SINGING

T

yneside A Cappella is a choir of women who enjoy singing popular songs in four part close harmony in the a cappella style (without accompaniment – just voices). The aim is to sing to the best of our ability and have a great deal of fun along the way. Musical Director Peter Jones is a very experienced director and vocal coach, who gets the best out of the choir with a mixture of hard work and fun which has resulted in a wonderful sound and high standard of singing from the 47 members. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at West Moor Community Association, from 7.30 – 10.00 p.m. The Centre has a large, free car park and is on a main bus route. The choir is a mix of singers with some previous experience and those who have never sung before, and who come from a wide background and age group – teachers, students, housewives, health service, local government, retail, business, hospitality, retired – who are brought together as friends to enjoy singing and also several social events organised through the year outside of rehearsals. The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. Many of the girls say how much better they feel at the end of the rehearsal, even when its been a tough day or life isn’t at its best, the joy of singing, the support of good friends and the magical experience of a group of people coming together and performing as one lifts the spirits.

Looking for a new hobby? Can you sing in tune, and are willing to learn? Read on! There is a song for everyone - Queen, Nat King Cole, Michael Buble; some Irving Berlin and some Beatles. Members pay £10 per month, and for that they receive music, teaching aids (teach track CDs/MP3s), performance outfits, excellent rehearsal facilities and support to learn how to sing to the best of their ability. None of the musical leadership receives any payment for their services – the choir is a team dedicated to musical enjoyment for all. New members are encouraged to learn at their own speed and become part of the performance ensemble when they and the Musical Director feel they are ready. There are no formal auditions, singers need to be able to sing in tune, hold their line, and be willing to learn.

The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. The choir performs regularly throughout the year at a variety of venues including Newcastle Civic Centre, Seaton Delaval Hall, various local churches, Beamish Museum, The King’s Hall at Newcastle University and current plans are shaping up for an exciting weekend in Ireland in April 2018 to take part in the Bangor International Music Festival.
