WHAT’S ON

What’s on at Gosforth Civic Theatre Gosforth Civic Theatre (GCT) are offering another full programme of events this summer for you to enjoy with your family and friends. The theatre, arts venue, café and community hub, based right here in the heart of Gosforth, is home to, and run by, Liberdade Community Development Trust. Liberdade, a disability arts organisation, began in 2003 as an apprenticeship scheme, with the aim of enabling 8 young people with learning disabilities to set up and run their own physical theatre company. Those 8 original company members and now many more show how running an organisation can offer people with learning disabilities choice, and the opportunity to shape the world in which they live. In the words of Ozzy, one of the founding members “We opened the theatre because, historically, society has created places for people with learning disabilities to go, whereas at GCT, people with learning disabilities are creating a place where everyone can come together.” Like all arts organisations that aim to change the world, they want to bring people together to create understanding. One of their mantras is to decide what is the new normal by being extraordinary, and they want to shape the local community by telling their stories and providing a home for everyone to enjoy. 6 | SELECT MAGAZINE

HOW TO GET YOUR SUMMER FEET During the winter the skin on our feet can become dry and cracked. Giving them some attention now can get them sandal ready.

If the skin is very thick you can make an appointment and we will remove it. Using a good emollient cream rehydrates the skin. A hard skin file on the heels once a fortnight will smooth the skin. The nails need attention too. If they are thick we can reduce them. If they are damaged we can make a false nail using Wilde Pedique. The nails can then be painted, they will look better. Here at Howlett and Dickinson we hope you have a great summer with more freedom than we have had of late.

shape, These are the rosti. Heat the butter and oil in a pan and cook the rosti for 6-7 mins on each side until deep golden brown and crispy. Meanwhile, grill or oven cook the bacon for 20-25 minutes, until crisp and golden. Smoked bacon is sublime but unsmoked is good too. A few minutes before the bacon and rosti are ready, bring a pan of water to a gentle simmer and poach the eggs. Top each rosti with 2 rashers of bacon and 1 poached egg. Serve with maple syrup.

Local Students Step into the Spotlight! Rehearsals are well underway at Razzamataz Theatre Schools Newcastle, where 170 local children and young people are gearing up for their first fullscale performance since before the pandemic. Pre-covid, the students produced an annual showcase, but restrictions and lockdowns put all of that on hold. Featuring excerpts from family favourites like Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia, and Peter Pan, as well as more recent hits such as Beetlejuice and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, the 2022 show promises to have audiences beaming with joy and dancing in the aisles as they join the students in celebrating returning to the theatre. Into the Spotlight! is all about celebration”, says James Pennell, the Principal and Artistic Director of the school. “While we worked hard to give our students great online performance opportunities and virtual classes throughout the lockdowns, being onstage in front of a live audience gives a feeling like no other, and we are so happy to be able to give that back to the students. The show is already looking amazing, and I know that all of the energy the students are putting into it is going to make it the best we’ve ever done!”. Some of the older students recently got a taste of being back on stage when the

school produced a charity concert, raising £1,500 for the Give A Duck Foundation. The charity supports children undergoing chemotherapy and was nominated by one of the school’s younger students who is currently being supported by them. “Finally, being back doing what we love was amazing, and especially for such an incredible cause!” says Senior student, Ellie. Confidence and wellbeing are at the heart of Razzamataz Newcastle. Their main goal is to help children and young people grow and develop, gaining confidence, skill, and friendships along the way. On top of this, students perform at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House every

Segedunum Improvements Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum, based in Wallsend, have successfully secured £499,000 of Government funding for a host of improvements and upgrades.

T

he UNESCO World Heritage Site, located at the south end of Wallsend, is one of more than 60 galleries, museums, libraries, and cultural venues to receive cash through the Government’s £48m Cultural Investment Fund (CIF). The grant will pay for repairs to the roof, the installation of a new lift, and other improvements. New equipment to control the conditions in the galleries will help to protect the museum’s internationally important collection of Roman artefacts and ensure that major exhibitions from other museums can be brought to the North East. Segedunum is managed for the council by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and has welcomed almost one million visitors from the local community and tourists from all over the world since it opened in June 2000. In AD 122, the Emperor Hadrian ordered a mighty frontier system to be built across Britain, designed to consolidate, and define the Roman Empire and help protect against raiding parties from the north. The result was Hadrian's Wall, a 73-mile barrier stretching from the River Tyne in the east to the Solway Firth in the west. Segedunum, which means ‘Strong Fort’, was built to guard the eastern end of the Wall and housed 600 Roman soldiers. It stood for almost 300 years as a symbol of Roman rule and a bastion against barbarian attack. Today, Segedunum is once again a major site on Hadrian's Wall. It is the most excavated fort along the Wall with surviving foundations of many buildings and

part of the Wall itself. There is a large interactive museum plus full-scale reconstructions of a bath house (currently viewed externally only) and a section of Wall within the grounds. The 35-metre-high viewing tower provides outstanding views across the World Heritage Site. North Tyneside Council has identified Segedunum as a priority for investment as part of its Ambition for North Tyneside regeneration strategy and is working with Tyne and Wear Archives & Museums to transform the offer and visitor experience. North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE, said: “This funding for essential repairs at Segedunum will hopefully set us on the road for the wider development of the World Heritage Site, which we are proud to have in Wallsend. “MEND funding will ensure that Segedunum becomes even more welcoming for visitors and, as we develop our work through the Hadrian’s Wall Partnership, we hope to see more investment coming into the site to make this a truly exciting offer for visitors from across the region and beyond.” Keith Merrin, Director of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, said: “It is fantastic to have this funding to make much needed repairs and improvements to Segedunum, having seen more than a million visitors pass through it's doors in the last 20 years .This is just the start of an ambitious development programme at the museum to update displays and facilities so this important World

Heritage Site can be enjoyed for years to come by local communities and visitors from far and wide.” The Cultural Investment Fund is allocating £48m to galleries, museums, libraries and cultural venues across the country, to help improve public access to the arts, safeguard cultural assets for future generations, and power economic growth through culture. The Segedunum funding has been awarded from the Museums Estate and Development Fund (MEND) strand of the funding, which helps to pay for museum and local authority infrastructure projects and urgent maintenance works beyond their day-to-day budgets. It was awarded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sports, delivered by Arts Council England. The announcement follows a concerted effort by the Government to support the country’s vital cultural organisations. Segedunum Roman Fort is currently taking part in the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 festival – a year-long series of events and exhibitions along the Wall celebrating 1900 years since it was built. Segedunum will be hosting an exhibition ‘Building the Wall’ from 9 April – 1 October 2022, exploring who built Hadrian’s Wall and how, and considering the substantial practical and logistical challenges involved. It will also focus on the revealing evidence from the impressive 80 metre stretch of Wall remains at Segedunum. Visit www. segedunumromanfort.org.uk/whatson/building-the-wall

Probate Lawyers: The Inspector Clouseaus of the Legal World When we take on a probate case, it is often in respect of a client who lived alone before their death. They may not have been married in the first place, which is quite common, or their spouse or cohabitee predeceased them. We therefore turn up at a property and have to work our way through everything. Would you know where to start if you had been asked to look after the estate of a distant relative who you may not have seen for years? Are you a friend who was asked to be an Executor? Either way you may know a lot less than you’d assumed about how your friend or relative lived their life. That’s why I feel as if I am Inspector Clouseau a lot of the time. In one case last year, I could see that our client had been a church goer. I contacted the local vicar and he was able to give me a bit of background, who some relatives were, who may have died years ago etc. This was important because of the way the will was drafted. People who may have seemed important turned out to be none other than those my client had met on holiday and had then visited once. I have to search the house for valuables. But what is valuable? We alerted our auctioneer to a collection of comics recently. He was beyond excited and travelled a great distance to collect them. They raised hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction! I have clients who have collections of antiquities and art work that they have brought from their country of birth. It is always worth investigating their origin as what may seem worthless in this country could be exceptionally valuable in another. Or what about bank statements. We have to go back seven years to ensure that no monies or assets were given away during that period which would have an impact upon Inheritance Tax. I love going through bank statements. I can often spot overpayments. Three lots of house insurance per year in one case. Our client didn’t have the wherewithal to understand what was going on. It took some time but we managed to recover payments which had been made to two of the insurance companies. Or enquiring about the mental health of a client in the years before their death. Someone who has lost mental capacity should not be paying council tax. I have recovered thousands of pounds in overpaid council tax in various cases. I always look to see if there are recurring payments being paid from bank accounts or credit cards. What were they for, should they have been paid? Are some of them prepayments that now need to be reclaimed? I wonder though if Inspector Clouseau knows as much about infestations as me? Wasp nests, rats, mice, sewer flies, is that mould or damp, what is the likely source? What is the cheapest and fastest way of 30 | SELECT MAGAZINE

JACQUELINE EMMERSON

getting rid of all of the above? We also have to consider items found in the house. One client had a contract for various electrical items including televisions. Imagine if you had given away the tv or taken it to the skip. It is only by checking all documentation and bank statements that we spotimportant information which leads us to investigate further. A common issue is stair lifts, does the company still own it, is there a balancing payment due? Then there are secret relatives. We have come across documents that show that the next of kin is actually the child of the deceased. The child that no one knew about and who has not been adopted. In one instance, the family assumed that they were next of kin until we told them otherwise. Cash and goods had already been removed from the property and had to be returned. But it was far better that the family found out sooner rather than later. What if the child had sought their rightful inheritance at a later date? On more than one occasion we have uncovered a secret family. Our clients sometimes live double lives. This means that the house, pension and all other assets have to be sorted out. As you can imagine one side of the family may be very angry, not only is there another “wife” or “husband” but sometimes there are also children involved. Surprisingly some items that you may think are valuable turn out to be almost worthless. There are trends and fads in the antiques and auction world. So that very expensive sideboard that your friend or relative was so proud of turns out to be worth nothing and it costs money to have it taken away. Certain ornaments previously worth hundreds or even thousands turn out to be so out of favour that you couldn’t get rid of them at a flea market. Auctioneers often charge a fee for coming out to value items. That fee may be more than the value of the goods themselves. However, because we have used the same auctioneer for years they will come out to our probate houses free of charge. I often take items along from a few houses at once. If a client has been in a care home then often all that is left is jewellery and ornaments. I love to hear that an innocuous looking brooch is worth hundreds. Or a damaged old watch or a battered musical instrument. I’m actually on holiday for a couple of days, so what have I spent my time doing? You guessed it, trotting around antique barns. If you need any help or advice to plan your own affairs or if you are now trying to administer an estate please don’t hesitate to contact me. Look Forward to your Next Getaway In need of a break? Local coach tourism experts Graham Wright and John Hindhaugh are taking bookings now for their United Group Travel quaity coach tours. Graham explains more... John and I have worked in the coach tourism industry as drivers for many years, the last few spent as tour drivers for the same local North East coach holiday company, until the Global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on our industry, with many companies going out of business. Over the years, on our numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, we have built up a fantastic relationship with many of our passengers, and are lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated our experience and knowledge of the places we visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of our friends that the question was asked about starting our own company doing our own holidays, so here we are. We have put all our years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning our exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and we only select the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to us, or we have previously used before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on our knowledge as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always enjoyed. The trips do not leave the hotel too early, or return too late, so as to allow everyone to make full use of the facilities of the chosen hotel. Guaranteed free time as well as entertainment are also key factors that we take into account to try and make a tour as pleasurable an experience possible.

In such a short space of time, from the initial concept, we have managed to make massive progress. During this current difficult time we all need something to look forward to, and we currently have a wide range of fantastic tours in Great Britain. From Norfolk to Somerset, Donegal to the Brecon Beacons, our advert on the opposite page shows you what’s on offer, with more to follow! You can rest assured that you can book with confidence with us. We have been granted a COVID-19 Industry Standard Certificate which shows government and industry COVID-19 guidelines are followed. Plus, if your tour is cancelled due to the COVID restrictions, you will receive a full refund. GARDENING

Houseplants for Every Home Whether you’re a minimalist, maximalist, or anything in between, houseplants make a wonderful addition to your home, and Dobbies has announced a range with something to suit all interiors. Dobbies’ Senior Houseplant Buyer, Claire Bishop talks through the new season varieties.

Let’s Celebrate A bold collection that celebrates the joy of being together, the new houseplants from Dobbies’ Let’s Celebrate range are in-keeping with this fun theme. Claire said: “For Let’s Celebrate, we wanted to emphasise the vibrancy that houseplants bring to a home, with larger plant varieties that feature plenty of lush greenery and interesting foliage. Plants like the Monstera deliciosa and the Livistona chinensis offer wonderful texture and interest and work well in bright plant pots that bring out their colour. For a dramatic effect, style these plants in groups against a bright wall for a high summer look that will instantly elevate your interiors.” Global Fusion For sun seekers looking to inject some summer warmth into their homes, the new plants from Dobbies’ Global Fusion collection are the perfect choice. Claire said: “Succulents are wonderful in the home year-round, but in summer work well to give your space a worldly look and feel, reminiscent of a sun-soaked sanctuary. A popular low maintenance plant, Succulents are ideal for all plant parents as they can survive in most climates and require very little maintenance and watering. Pair your Succulents with textured clay pots in earthy shades of terracotta and rust to bring a touch of the Mediterranean to your home décor.” Contemporary Country Dobbies’ Contemporary Country collection is country chic with a modern twist, and the new season plants work well to tie the theme together and bring the outside in. Claire said: “Contemporary Country spotlights the ever-changing greenery we see in nature, so for this collection we have focused on layering different textures and tones with plants that work well together to create a relaxed and rural feel, however you style them. The Calathea fusion limited edition is a stand-out from this range and boasts striking green leaves with contrasting white markings. Beautiful when styled on its own or with

smaller plants, the Calathea fusion is well suited to bright spots out of direct sunlight and regular watering, so make sure the soil is kept moist to keep this gorgeous plant hydrated.” Natural Zen An organic, sophisticated blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design, Dobbies’ Natural Zen collection is wellsuited to pared-back interiors, and the theme’s plants perfectly complement minimalistic décor. Claire said: “Natural Zen encompasses Dobbies’ take on the much-loved Japandi trend, and the new plants really help bring the elegant vision of this collection to life. The collection includes Bonsai trees, which have been popular for years thanks to the unique way they bring nature indoors and add dimension to a space. The Ficus ginseng in this collection will bring a sense of tranquillity to any home and is sure to be popular with those looking to add some sophisticated flair to their home. “To care for the Ficus ginseng, make sure you place it in a bright position out of direct sunlight, and water regularly to ensure its roots don’t dry out. This plant thrives in a warm spot, so ensure you avoid draughty windowsills.” ■ To explore the full range of new season houseplants visit your local Dobbies Garden Centre at Gosforth Park, Gosforth, NE3 5EP www.dobbies.com

LIGHTYEAR

Genres: Animation, Action, Age Rating: To Be Confirmed Release date: 17th June

‘Lightyear’ is a spin-off of Pixar’s ‘Toy Story’ series, serving as an origin story for the fictional human character Buzz Lightyear, who inspired the action figure of the same name. In this film, fans of the Toy Story franchise will find out how the young test pilot, Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans), became the space ranger that we all know him to be today. He embarks on an intergalactic adventure with a group of ambitious recruits and his robot companion. Buzz Lightyear was an immediate sensation when Pixar debuted on the big screen in 1995 with the original ‘Toy Story’. The tale of a space toy who thought he was a spaceman, only to have an existential crisis and discover new meaning in a child’s life, was gripping and highly amusing.

Starring four-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career and introducing Mason Thames in his first ever film role, The Black Phone is produced, directed, and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the writerdirector of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

Help Reduce Energy Costs with Thermos Roof With most of us facing rising energy bills, why not reduce these costs and save money instantly with a Thermos Roof insulation system in your conservatory. Here they explain more. Conservatories are a great space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden. They are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually shortlived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons: to increase its insulating performance and enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in winter, heat is sucked out of your room and into the conservatory as soon as you open the door. During the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof, we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use, into a space you can enjoy all year round as the temperature is comfortable and constant. You will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight; 42 | SELECT MAGAZINE

therefore, no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this, the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is today. The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste and less time to install, saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape, transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein the external weather conditions do not dictate its use; it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter

in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a five-year warranty. We guarantee that you will be amazed by both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and, should you require it, we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. ■ Please give us a call today on 01670 828 695 to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory! www.thermosroof.co.uk

Give Someone Power Of Attorney… Before It's Too Late Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare: This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

A Good Read The Vatican Secret by David Leadbeater

From the bustling streets of Rome to the mountains of the Middle East, this high-octane adventure is laced with ancient history and intrigue. The clock is ticking for ex-MI5 agent, Joe Mason. An elderly professor under his protection has been ruthlessly murdered in the Vatican archives. If he doesn’t act fast to track down the people responsible, and the book of secrets in their possession, the threat to the Church and the world could be devastating. David Leadbeater brings his codebreaking quest to life by balancing explosive action sequences with key historical details perfectly. Car chases, boat crashes, hand-tohand combat and a healthy dose of brutal murder all help keep the blood pumping and the pages turning. But there’s plenty to discover too about the ancient cities, churches and artefacts that lie at the heart of Christianity. The relationships between Mason and Roxy - his feisty fellow agent - and other comrades they encounter on their chase are also central to the unfolding drama. Each carries their own physical or psychological scars that are explored sensitively as the action builds. The success of this mission could help them all atone for past mistakes and misjudgments - so failure is not an option. The Vatican Secret is a thrilling novel that whisks you through crypts and catacombs, across stormy waters and treacherous caves. But it’s also a timely story about corruption, fake news and the danger posed by power hungry leaders.

So begins a hilarious adventure as Eddie, his new friend Flo Aunt Burge and a whole gang of amazing animals take on the most dastardly villain Amsterdam has ever seen, in a desperate race to save one of their own . . . Eddie Albert is a technicolour cinematic adventure packed full of friendship, animals, action... and always, of course, a wicked sense of humour.

Sunrise by the Sea by Jenny Colgan

When she is given the opportunity to move to a remote tidal island off the Cornish Coast, Marisa Rossi decides some peace and quiet might be just what she needs. Since the death of her grandfather back in Italy, she’s been struggling to find a way out of her grief. Perhaps this will be the perfect place for her to recuperate. But Mount Polbearne is a far cry from the sleepy little place she was imagining. Between her noisy pianoteaching Russian neighbour and the hustle and bustle of a busy community, Marisa finds solitude is not so easy to come by. Especially when she finds herself involved with a tiny local bakery desperately in need of some new zest to save it . Curl up and escape with this heart-warming Jenny Colgan book.
