Great Park Community Centre is back!

G

reat Park Community Centre (GPCC) has reopened its doors and is back open 7 days a week, but with some limited opening hours. Following lockdown, new measures have been put in place to ensure the local community can enjoy the facilities as safely as possible. Current measures include; social distancing signage, screens at reception, hand sanitiser stations, one-way systems, and contactless payments. As the centre adapts to the current climate, private family drop-in sessions have been introduced on its outdoor courts, and tennis memberships have become more popular. There have also been several groups return through the summer including Playgroup, Taekwondo, Fat Burn, Pilates, Art Venturers and Great Park Football Club. Centre Manager Mark Graham said ‘It has been great to get the doors back open and, although we have had a quiet July by our standards, August is picking up with September looking busier again. We are working hard with our hirers and ensuring updated risk assessments are in place and would like to let all those visiting the centre we have implemented additional measures to ensure the centre is as safe as possible.’ GPCC has been one of the first community

6

centre to declare its doors open, with some other centres around the city not yet ready to return. Mark added ‘I feel it is important to be there as a hub for the local community and hirers, as long as its safe to do so. Some centres have been in touch about advice on reopening and best practices including risk assessments, cleaning, and booking procedures. So, if any other local centres or community groups want any information on our processes or just a catch up, I would like to encourage them to get in touch as we all need to stick together at this time.’ The centre has also begun works on its successful energy efficiency bid, which has included the updating of the lighting to LED around the centre along with the outdoor floodlights: ‘The energy efficiency project is something we have wanted to do for a while now and its great to get this installed. The savings will enable us to push on with more community focused projects as we start to luck to hopefully a bit of a brighter future!’. To get in touch with Mark, or a member of the team, call 0191 236 8196 or email info@greatparkcommunitycentre.com. Combat academic losses from lockdown with Art JENN DIAZ, DIRECTOR AT TURPENTYNE FINE ART CLASSES, DISCUSSES HOW THE ARTS CAN ENRICH CHILD DEVELOPMENT DURING COVID AND BEYOND 2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenge and devastating losses. These past few months have turned our adult worlds upside down. Imagine for a moment the distinctly different challenge this has been for young people. Our children are living through this whilst their bodies and minds are undergoing essential physical and cognitive development. The upending of their routines has for many led to a significant drop in educational and social stimuli. Four months on, and our children are desperate to see their friends, to return to their familiar routines, and to find an outlet for expressing everything on their minds.

Gerhard Richter once said “Art is the highest form of hope” For Turpentyne Fine Art Classes, located on Ashburton Road in Gosforth, this sentiment has always been amongst our guiding principles. Now, in the world of 2020, access to the arts has never been more important. Our children are experiencing an event that will transform their lives, for better or worse. Art equips them with the tools to process and express their thoughts and feelings as they develop healthy emotional responses to our ever-changing world. Not only is art a way to express oneself creatively, but it is also an essential tool for learning and cognitive development. Studies have shown that children who participate in the arts are more likely to achieve and excel academically. Educators understand that the critical and abstract thinking processes used in art lead to the better understanding of academic subjects such as languages, science, and maths. At Turpentyne, we aim to provide this enrichment. We understand that art is essential for our growth and development as emotionally healthy human beings. Art is particularly important for children, as additionally they are developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Creating a drawing or painting requires visual 10

measurement, an understanding of line, form, and composition. It requires fine motor skills to manipulate mediums and accurately execute the process of putting pencil to paper. At Turpentyne we have always offered a calm and soothing environment where our students can be creative as they learn the “how to” of art. That still holds true, but the new challenge of Covid has inspired us to adapt, so that we can keep our students safe whilst still completing our mission of providing the highest quality art instruction. We are truly thankful for the unique opportunity we have to continue making a difference in the lives of so many children in the Northeast. We are looking forward to seeing all our students creating art in the Turpentyne studio again! www.Turpentyne.com

GOSFORTH CIVIC THEATRE CAFé REOPENS

G

osforth residents can look forward to a refreshed and reinvigorated Gosforth Civic Theatre café. They reopen this August with a new chef heralding a brand new menu to go alongside a safe and welcoming environment as the Theatre finally reopens its doors. You can expect a mouth-watering menu, bursting with flavour, using the freshest ingredients from the finest local suppliers in the region. At the heart of the dishes is a desire to celebrate good quality produce and create balanced meals that are not only tasty but are good for the body, mind and soul. From the Brunch menu you can choose from, among others, the healthy and delicious baked eggs and homemade beans, poached eggs on vegetable fritters, or opt for the hearty Big Breakfast, or even a breakfast roll if you’re in a rush. Lunch has a selection of fresh and tasty salads, satisfying sandwiches (including a killer turkey club) and a grazing board for those that want to share. The Theatre’s café has always been a hit with families, so it’s only right that there’s also a bigger and more exciting kids’ menu with more choice and some great additions (cinnamon French toast sticks, anyone?!) to keep the little ones happy. With cakes and bread supplied from Gosforth favourites Pink Lane Bakery and weekly specials, GCT will be a must visit in Gosforth’s dining scene. Behind the new menu is the Theatre’s newest member of the team. Born on the beautiful island of St. Lucia, Dyonne Branch comes in as chef, boasting 20 years of experience working for one of the best hotels in the Caribbean, Sugar Beach; excellent restaurants Etain, Zinc and Cameron House Hotel in Glasgow; and Malmaison, Hotel du Vin and as Head Chef at Gusto Italians in Newcastle.

12

Excited to get started, Dyonne said, “GCT Café has the potential to be amazing. We are surrounded by fantastic local suppliers, great ingredients, and a fantastic community. I believe that eating well is not just the food we feed our bodies, but a means of feeding our entire being, and I’ve tried to put that ethos in our new menu.” The charity-run, community venue has been closed to the public since March due to the Coronavirus outbreak. After an uncertain four months, where the entirety of their income was taken away and all but two staff placed on furlough, GCT is now being readied for a safe, post-lockdown reopening. The main dining space, which will have reduced seating to maintain social distancing, will be in the John Jennings Studio with access to outside seating in the Garden; hand sanitising points have been installed throughout the building; staff will be undertaking rigorous and regular cleaning routines; and they will be running table service and allowing a table booking system to control numbers. Building Manager Joseph Harrop, who has overseen the changes and staff training stated, “We wanted to take our time and make sure we are as safe and responsible as we can be. The safety and well-being of our staff and customers is paramount and we’re confident that the systems and procedures we’ve put in place will make those that visit us feel comfortable and at home. We can’t wait to get going again.” Gosforth Civic Theatre reopens their café on Monday 17th August. For more information and to book a table visit gosforthcivictheatre.co.uk/café or call 0191 284 3700. Gosforth Civic Theatre, Regent Farm Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 3HD

A Perfect Childcare Choice KENTON PARK NURSERY SCHOOL OFFERS A FRIENDLY AND HOMELY SETTING FOR ALL CHILDREN

N

estled in a quiet corner of Kenton Park Shopping Centre, Kenton Park Nursery School has been providing a warm and welcoming environment for local children for over 25 years. During these uncertain times, the nursery has remained open to provide care for the children of NHS staff and keyworkers, and now things are beginning to get back to normal. Staff play a key role in a new enhanced cleaning and sanitising regime, to ensure the learning environment is as safe as possible, with Government guidance adhered to strictly and precautions in place to combat the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Whether it be thorough hand washing, disinfecting toys and learning areas, or even carrying out socially distant visits with new parents, Kenton Park Nursery has adapted to ensure that parents feel confident and comfortable when they leave their child at nursery for the day. Kenton Park Nursery is a 16

friendly and homely setting with an experienced, committed and very loving team. The staff cherish and nurture every child they look after and are approachable and supportive to all their families. The nursery is part of the Choice Childcare group of nurseries, which also operates in Cramlington, Sunderland, Wallsend and Westerhope. The Company is

committed to ensuring each of its nurseries focuses on its own local community though, so each nursery is very unique. Kenton Park Nursery provides a safe and warm environment to all the children and that truly sets them apart (you can visit the Testimonials page on their website www.kentonparknurseyschool. co.uk) and read comments from previous and existing families.

All the staff at Kenton Park Nursery are dedicated to caring for and educating babies and children, with many professional parents enrolling their children from a young age so they can return to work. In the nursery there is a diverse group of staff from a range a different backgrounds, and also those who are young and newly qualified to the more mature, long term practitioners. They have all grown into a team of exceptional individuals whose main aim is to provide the best possible alternative to your own care, so that you can happily and confidently leave your child with them and concentrate fully on your work. Once you meet the staff it becomes very apparent that they all love their work. All staff have all undergone the mandatory enhanced DBS checks which enable them to work with young children, and the Company is proud to employ its own in-house First Aid Instructor so that each member of staff has a Paediatric First Aid qualification. The safety and wellbeing of the children is always the first priority. From the moment you approach the nursery, children fall in love with the bright and wonderful entrance mural which contains many of their favourite characters. Inside the children are cared for in three separate rooms. Each child progresses through the nursery based on their age and their readiness to make the move. They each have a keyworker who is the special person designated to carry out all their developmental record keeping. This keyworker is also the main link between the nursery and the parents, especially in the early 'settling-in' period. The three rooms are:

Babies and Toddlers Room (Bs & Ts)

This room is on the ground floor and it is where they care for the youngest children, those aged under two years. A range of activities take place throughout the day which provide your child with a stimulating

learning experience within a cosy and comforting setting. Activities can take place both indoors and outside in the nursery garden. The routine in the Bs & Ts room is kept very flexible, to enable the staff to meet the needs of each individual child. As an example, within the routine they do provide a set sleep time for the children however, at any time throughout the day if a child wants to sleep, then they can do so.

2's-3's Room

Children move upstairs to the 2-3s room; and here they follow a plan of activities, which can be adult-led or child-initiated. As part of their planning, various topics and themes are broken down into different learning and experiences for the children to take part in. On a daily basis your child will participate in fun-filled and educational activities while also finding out about themselves and the world around them. Throughout the day there will be lots of opportunities to engage in free play activities, with time to explore, experiment, experience and discover things for themselves, as well as spending one to one time with their key person. All activities can take place both indoors and outside in the nursery garden.

3-4's Room: The PreSchool Room

The children swell with pride

once they become members of "The Big Room". In this room your child will have access to a wide range of activities, sand and water play, arts and crafts, mark-making, number activities, construction and role play opportunities to name but a few. The 3s – 4s also have their own computer situated within the room. This encourages children's ICT skills and is used daily. Your child will also learn through Phase One of Letters & Sounds, which falls largely within the Literacy area of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage. In this room the staff do their best to encourage confidence and self-esteem in all the children which will enable them to happily make the transition to school.

The Nursery Garden

The nursery garden is very important and very special – it is used by all of the children at every opportunity and they love being out there, taking part in physical play, carrying out investigations, joining in with friends, but

primarily having a lot of fun. Everyone comments with surprise at how big the garden is, and how secluded and private it is, with its high hedges and the many trees which provide good shade on sunny days. There is are raised beds for growing fruit and vegetables, as well as a bark area under the trees, a soft surface area and an area of grass for stories and picnics. The garden is also home to a playhouse, a pirate ship, a large mud kitchen and giant sand pit! The nursery focuses on natural play equipment as much as possible – there is even a fully protected small pond which contains a lot of frogs!

Other Rooms

The nursery also has a dedicated dining room where breakfast, lunch and tea are served on site every day for the children. There is also a fully stocked library with a wide range of non-fiction and fiction books for all ages. All the children's development is recorded and analysed on an online tracker to provide an individual pathway for future learning. The nursery curriculum is The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS). Parents are able to receive regular updates directly to their smartphones and

18

tablets so they have peace of mind and are able to stay in touch as much (or as little) as they like. Through the EYFS the nursery identifies each child's developmental needs to enable them to make the most of their emerging skills, their abilities and their own particular talents. Within the EYFS framework children experience the following learning areas: • Prime Areas • Personal, Social & Emotional Development • Physical Development • Communication & Language • Specific Areas • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the World • Expressive Arts & Design At Kenton Park Nursery they also recognise the importance of a healthy lifestyle for the children they care for. The meals are high quality and consist of food specially chosen to give a balanced and nutritious diet, whilst accommodating the likes and dislikes of young children. Meals are prepared and cooked in the nursery kitchen by a fully qualified and experienced chef. Some of the food prepared in the kitchen is grown by staff and children in the nursery vegetable garden. The meals are 'home cooked' with an emphasis on

variety and non-processed foods from around the world so they appeal to the children's senses by incorporating taste, appearance and texture as part of their everyday diet. The nursery also accommodates special diets based on religious, medical or ethical grounds. The nursery is open 51 weeks of the year, only closing for one working week at Christmas, and for all bank holidays. Otherwise they are open from 7.30am – 6.00pm daily and offer full day, or morning/afternoon only places. The nursery offers free childcare places to eligible 2 year olds, and all 3-4 year olds, and always endeavours to be as flexible as possible in order ensure parents' childcare needs can be met. To find out about when your child will be entitled to free childcare, to arrange a personal tour or to confirm the current nursery fees, visit the nursery website or call 0191 285 5020. Struggling with hearing loss? SPECIALIST AUDIOLOGIST SERVICE NE1HEAR ARE AT HAND TO HELP YOU WITH ANY HEARING ISSUES YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING. HERE THEY EXPLAIN MORE...

N

E1Hear is a local group of four Audiologists who have over 60 years of experience within the NHS. We are the only private Audiology service in the North East that can offer a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative treatments for hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness and we pride ourselves on being a complete Audiology Service which is easily accessible to help alleviate some of the distress these problems can cause. We are based in Milburn House on Dean Street, in the centre of Newcastle so easily reached by public transport and car. We understand that you may be nervous coming to visit us, but we have made some changes to our normal practices to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing is top priority. We are sticking to social distancing guidelines and we will be wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) which follows government and professional guidelines. After each person we see, we are fully disinfecting our room and testing equipment, making it safe for the next patient. If you have an appointment booked, but you’re not feeling well or you have any COVID-19 symptoms, we’d ask that you don’t come in until you’re feeling better. We’ll make sure to arrange for a later date. We still offer the same caring and professional service including wax removal by microsuction – a safe and effective way of removing wax. We can offer hearing protection along with hearing aids, tinnitus and balance rehabilitation. We are receiving many reports of people struggling with hearing loss due to the introduction of face masks, either at work, or just when they are out and about. They have realised that they lipread

“We are the only private Audiology service in the North East that can offer a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative treatments.” to aid communication and now this isn’t always an option. Maybe now would be a good time to consider hearing aids? We are excited to announce we are now fitting the newest Widex hearing aids – the Widex MOMENT – the first hearing aid which doesn’t sound like a hearing aid. It delivers the most pure, natural sound ever so you can hear every moment like you used to. We have also introduced Remotecare, so your hearing aids can be fitted or adjusted in your own home, without the need for frequent visits to the clinic. We are currently offering a 10% discount to NHS employees on all of our Hearing aids, so please get in touch for a hearing assessment and we can discuss your individual needs and the options of hearing aids that would be suitable for you. Clare, Claire, Emily and Kathryn can be contacted by phone or email, or for more information about products and prices please visit our website. Second-Hand, but Not Second Best

By Tracey Anderson

T

here has never been a better time to buy second hand for your home. During lockdown lots of people indulged in some major decluttering and many lovely items have ended up on eBay, Facebook, and similar sites, not to mention charity shops, carboot sales and vintage stores. Nowadays we can buy anything we like new online or in department stores. So why purchase anything second-hand? Well, the problem with everyone shopping in the same stores is that everyone’s home begins to look a bit like identikit furnishing or ‘homedesign-by-numbers’. Then there’s the issue of landfill. Buying second-hand means you’re not contributing to a ‘wasteful’ society. Finally, second-hand means you get to choose something different, quirky, and unique to you. Take paintings. It’s easy to pop into IKEA and buy a nice printed canvas but buying an original vintage oil painting is significantly more worth it. Most people think ‘Rembrandt’ or ‘Monet’ if you mention oil paintings but there are many lovely affordable original works of art or vintage prints on offer, and who knows, you might even happen upon an undiscovered old master!

Antiques rugs are another good purchase and can set the tone of an entire space. Look in antique markets for Oushaks and Serapis style rugs. They use higher-quality wool, have a softer texture and blend with modern or antique furniture. They also tend to appreciate in value with age. Look for quality craftmanship, no sun damage, and no smoke and pet odours. An older rug should be worn evenly. Leather club chairs will always be a good purchase. Look for original leather or one recovered with vintage leather. Distressed leather is lovely and adds character but avoid chairs with a lot of peeling or cracking, and (unless it is for decorative purposes only) check the support it offers! I break plates and cups with alarming regularity. So much so that I gave up on matching dinner services many years ago. Instead I buy pretty individual vintage pieces I like. The mix ‘n’ match look is eclectic but works for me and my family. Vintage doesn’t necessarily mean expensive, but if you are more careful than I am go for it. Look for patina, shape, and design to indicate whether an article is genuine. Mirrors are some of the best items to buy vintage or antique. There are a wide range of styles in good condition that can add a touch of history or character to a room. An original mirror edged with silver or gold, even if it is distressed, is it’s so much more interesting than anything bought new. Old mirrors may have distortions or bubbles in the glass so are best placed where ‘decorative’ or ‘increasing light and space’ is more important than ‘functional mirror’! Buying second hand can be fun, let you express your individual personality, save money and the planet. What could be better? The Benefits of Live in Care LIVE-IN CARE CAN PROVIDE A REASSURING, WATCHFUL EYE, 24 HOURS A DAY EXPLAINS DAVID HASWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF BLUEBIRD CARE NEWCASTLE

A lot of the information out there is geared towards moving into a residential home and, while that is suitable for some, it doesn’t always have to be the case. At Bluebird Care Newcastle we have cost effective options for tailored live-in care packages around an individual’s needs, wishes and lifestyle, all within the comfort and security of their own home. We are extremely proud to have been rated as Overall Outstanding by our regulators CQC, this is the highest grade that can be achieved, and is testament to the whole team for their commitment and dedication to living our values every single day.

Signs live-in care is needed

Loneliness is a vicious circle and, over time, it can lead to becoming disconnected from society and the community. Once someone starts to feel lonely it can be incredibly difficult to make necessary changes to prevent how they feel. Live-in care may be necessary when someone is unable to manage the normal activities of daily living safely. Confusion, reduced mobility, and restless nights can increase the risk of falls and household accidents. Many people are too proud or ashamed to admit they’re having problems. However, there are clues that they may not be coping. If a loved one is looking dirty, unkempt, or inappropriately dressed. If they're not eating, or they're confused about medication, they may need help at home.

Vital signs that around-the-clock care support is necessary include:

• Near misses: Burned pans, hobs left on, doors left open, or baths overflowing could suggest that someone is suffering confusion and memory loss. • Falls: Arthritis, impaired mobility, and failing vision can make people unsteady and prone to fall. Falls can lead to broken bones or head injuries. Someone unable to get up or call for help will suffer pain and discomfort and is at risk of further problems. • Restless nights: Dementia can upset the body’s natural cycle of waking and sleeping. Sleep disturbance can also develop due to heart, lung disease, or urinary problems. Accidents are more likely when it’s dark, so live-in care helps maintain safety. • Wandering: In the later stages of dementia, people can be agitated and confused and may wander to seek familiar people and places. Live-in care can provide a reassuring, watchful eye, 24 hours a day.

Live-in care has many benefits including: • The maintenance of independence and freedom • The comfort and security of living in familiar surroundings • Avoidance of the potential stress of selling a family home and protecting inheritance • Live in the local community among friends and neighbours • The avoidance of separation from much-loved pets • Continued enjoyment of a garden and gardening • The freedom to choose what and when to eat, with meals prepared if required • Married couples and partners may continue to live together • Total peace of mind, both for the care recipient and for their family • A quality of one-to-one personal care and attention unrivalled by residential homes • Complete continuity of care, even 24 hours-a-day • Consistent companionship • Relatives and friends can visit at any time • With our live-in care service, we tailor a care package around an individual’s needs, wishes and lifestyle, all within the comfort and security of home

ENJOY YOUR CONSERVATORY ALL YEAR ROUND If you’re fed up with your conservatory being either freezing cold or blistering hot, then Thermos Roof have the answer

C

onservatories have become synonymous with the traditional English home. The first ever Conservatory in the UK was constructed in 1825 and to date there are now approximately 4 million. It is estimated that they can add up to 5% to the value of your property, which makes it a significant asset to your home. Conservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know that, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for 2 months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. Thermosroof have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, the first to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory, and during the summer it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermosroof they can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a Computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that they can do this all in one day! With no mess! They retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it form the inside, finishing

32

it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials they use are lightweight therefore no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess & upheaval in your home. in addition to this the look and finish of your Thermosroof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now. The performance of their lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. They can install a Thermosroof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits the Thermosroof team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce

rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and they guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. The team offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermosroof and should you require it we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Please give them a call today and ask for Steve to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory! Call 01670828695 www.thermosroof.co.uk

FITNES S

Badminton Benefits REASONS TO GIVE BADMINTON A GO At the time of writing gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools are still closed. But that doesn't mean that we can't participate in sport. From 1st June we've been able to play badminton outside, in the garden or on a marked court. If you've never played before now might be the perfect time to give it a try. It's a great sport for people of all ages and fitness levels. Those who play regularly are more mentally alert, with better fitness and agility levels. It's also a very social game and what we need right now are low-risk ways to socialise, because socialising is good for our mental health. Played at a high level it can burn up to 450 calories an hour but even a gentle to-and-fro with the grandkids in the local park will burn 150-200 calories. Badminton, like tennis requires total engagement. Players need to predict how an opponent will play a shot and then plan a counterattack, which improves mental agility. There is research to suggest that sports which involve a combination of both mental and physical activity offer a protective effect against dementia. Badminton requires a lot of movement, in multiple directions. It requires short sprints, jumps, stretches, and lunges as players strive to reach the shuttlecock, which means that legs, arms, and core muscles are all being worked. This builds strength and flexibility. Badminton is a great 'build-up' sport. You can start as slow as you like, tapping the shuttlecock over the net, trying to keep a rally going for as long as possible. As you improve and become quicker on your feet your shots will naturally increase in speed 34

By Tracey Anderson

“Played at a high level it can burn up to 450 calories an hour, but even a gentle to-and-fro with the grandkids in the local park will burn 150-200 calories. and strength too, and you will almost certainly want to introduce element of competitiveness. Played at higher levels the shuttlecock travels at impressive speeds. Badminton is actually the fastest racquet sport in the world. Professional players can smash the shuttle at speeds of over 200mph! This speed encourages players to improve co-ordination and core stability. Again, studies have shown that people with good core strength and coordination are less likely to suffer falls as they age. The best way to get started is to find a friend of similar fitness level and get out and give it a go. Having a practice partner will make you both more likely to commit to playing regularly. It's near impossible to play properly competitively outside as you are at the mercy of any breeze and a shuttlecock is 12 times

lighter than a tennis ball. But if the aim is to improve agility and fitness while socialising and having fun, don't let that stop you. By the time sports facilities open back up your confidence will have grown, and you may be ready for the next step of joining a badminton club or regular session. And the beauty of badminton is that it can be played indoors all winter, so rain never has to stop play. If you're a more accomplished badminton player who is missing their fix you could try crossminton, which is designed for outdoor play, doesn't need a court, and combines elements of badminton, tennis, and squash. There are plenty places locally where you’ll be able to hone your newly aquired skills. Visit www. tynesidebadmintoncentre.co.uk or www.northumberlandclub.org for more details.

This veg-richcurd tart –tarts drizzled Yorkshire with spinach pesto, is well were traditionally made worth the effort, and makes around Whitsuntide from the perfect dinner

leftover curds from the cheesemaking process, and are still made in all good bakeries and cake shops in Yorkshire today. They taste good on their own but even better with a sharp fruit sauce, like this one made from blackberries.

Ingredients

METHOD

FOR THE PASTRY: 175g plain flour 75g unsalted butter 40g icing sugar 1 large egg

➊ Make up the pastry by rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs then, adding the icing sugar and egg, stir until you have a firm dough. Chill for half an hour.

FOR THE FILLING: 225g curd cheese 12g unsalted butter, melted 100g caster sugar 100g ground almonds 2 eggs 50g currants Good pinch of nutmeg Grated rind of half a lemon 1 tablespoon rum FOR THE SAUCE: Handful of blackberries Juice of ½ a lemon 1 tablespoon cassis liqueur or rose water Caster sugar to taste 44

SERVES 4 - 6

➋ Roll and line into a 25cm flan tin. Line the pastry with baking parchment and fill with baking beans then bake for 10-15 minutes to set the pastry. Remove the beans and paper and leave the pastry to cool. ➌ For the filling, beat the curd in a bowl to break it up and then stir in all the other ingredients.

➍ Pour into the pastry case and bake at 190°C/375°F/Gas 5 for about 20 minutes until the top is golden. ➎ For the sauce, take a good handful of blackberries and liquidise them with the juice of ½ lemon, a tablespoon of cassis liqueur or rose water and sugar to taste. Sieve before serving.

A Good Read THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER by Kate Moreton

Getting married is one of those big events in your life that changes everything. For Elodie, plans for her upcoming wedding are being pulled away from her by her controlling future mother-in-law. Elodie works as an archivist in London and one day discovers an old satchel, an old photo, and an old sketch of a large house that will change everything and lead Elodie on a quest to discover the truth about the house and the lady in the photograph. Was she meant to find these items and how are they ultimately connected to her own past? Kate Morton is known for epic sagas – and at nearly 600 pages this is no exception. Told in multiple timelines, the action moves swiftly from the present to the 1880s, the early 1900s, and the 1940s as the story of the house and its inhabitants unfold. With a vast cast of characters this does require some concentration to keep track of who’s who, and sometimes the story changes time period just as you were becoming engrossed. However, it is worth persevering. Part love story, part ghost story, part murder mystery, and part commentary on social class divide in the Victorian era Morton brings the various stories vividly to life on the page. Who is the clockmaker’s daughter and how did she come to linger at Birchwood Manor? And how will this all help Elodie come to terms with the path that her own life is about to take?

ANIMAL ANTICS: THE LEAPING LION by Lucy Courtenay Brian is an excitable lion cub. His dad is the King of the Savannah, so a lot is expected of him. He tries to be big and intimidating, like his dad. There is one thing that Brian loves doing more than anything else and that is playing leapfrog. He is the best in the savannah and is always searching for the next big thing to leapfrog over. So, when he tackles his biggest leapfrog ever and fails, he is mortified when all the other animals laugh at him. Humiliated he vows to never leapfrog again. That is, until he learns that the Animal Olympics are going to be held in the savannah and leapfrog is one of the events! Can he pluck up the courage to compete and risk more humiliation? Will he make his dad proud? This lovely short chapter book (92 pages) is perfect for young animal lovers, combining animal facts – such as the fact that female lions do most of the hunting – with a fun story. Who knows, maybe lions really ARE good at leapfrog? 46

THE TESTAMENTS by Margaret Atwood

Coming 30 years after her best selling The Handmaid’s Tale, readers certainly had a long wait for this sequel. The success of the recent television series has certainly brought in new fans, anxious to know what happens and whether Gilead will ever be brought down. Here Atwood tries to give us some answers. For those not familiar, the original novel told the story of America in the not so distant future where a totalitarian state has been established in the east of the country after a civil war. Women’s rights have been taken away from them and are subjugated in this patriarchal society. This sequel tells us what happened next from the perspective of three women: Aunt Lydia, familiar to readers from the first novel, Agnes, a young woman living in Gilead, and Daisy, a young woman living in Canada. Here we learn something of how Gilead came to be in flash back accounts from Aunt Lydia, how the outside world sees Gilead, and the life-changing decisions that are made for young girls in Gilead by society. As a fan of the original I found this to be a gripping read that did not detract from the power of the 1985 novel. Is it a satisfying ending? Is everything resolved with the end of Gilead? That would be telling too much, and I’ll leave it up to you to make that discovery.

If you have a child who loves to perform – dancing, singing, acting – then this is the book for them! Noel Streatfield is best known for her novel Ballet Shoes and this one is often overlooked. Originally published as Curtain Up this follows the story of Sorrel, Holly, and Mark. After the death of their mother, and the disappearance of their father whilst serving in the Navy, the siblings are sent to wartime London to stay with their grandmother who they have never met. They find themselves in a world they have never experienced as they discover that their grandmother (and their mother) used to be a famous actress. She seems keen that the children follow in the family tradition, even though they have no experience, and they find themselves enrolled at Madame Fidolia’s Academy of Dancing and Stage training. Sorrel soon discovers a passion for performing, starring as Ariel in a production of The Tempest. Mark is determined to join the Navy like his father - despite being a talented singer – whilst Holly, shines at dancing. Ultimately this story is about coming to terms with loss and discovering an extended family, albeit with the smell of the greasepaint and a pirouette or two.
