he 15th annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place this summer, with shows from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th July in the surroundings of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and this year features a local North Shields artist as one of the headline acts! North Shields born artist Sam Fender is headlining the main stage on Thursday night. The Brits Award Critics Choice 2019 winner will bring his alternative rock style to Tynemouth to kick off what is likely to be a big summer for the up and coming performer. Friday sees solo acoustic star Jack Savoretti headlining the main stage. The London based artist has 6 studio albums behind him and brings a set list packed with hits. The headline act on Saturday is an 80's legend - Rick Astley! The 'Never Gonna Give You Up' hitmaker has sold over 40 million records worldwide and will be playing a mix of old classics as well as songs from his recently released album 'Beautiful Life'. The Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place in Tynemouth and is a four day cultural celebration of live music, dance and arts by the sea, attracting around 100,000 people. Live music concerts take place in the grounds of English Heritage property Tynemouth Priory and Castle. Local street food pop-ups trade under festoon lighting whilst festival go-ers gather around shipping bobbins and on reclaimed driftwood seats. There’s a jazz stage outside the Priory next to a welcoming pub overlooking the sea. A free programme of international street theatre provides the entertainment. Hundreds of local children learn new music skills in the weeks leading up to the event and participate in a 10

colourful parade to kick things off. Surf lessons take place a stone’s throw away and cruise ships enter the River Tyne just beyond the headland. There’s an innovative programme of dance and one-off attractions on the platforms of Grade II listed Tynemouth Station, as well as evening concerts at the Playhouse Whitley Bay and Tynemouth’s Surf Café. The festival will also feature a free programme of events including international street entertainment, live jazz music and a children’s pageant. This event does not have camping but there are a number of hotels, hostels and guest houses in the area. PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM FUTURE CARE FEES Your home may be at risk

I

n the past five years one million family homes have had to be sold to pay for care. Homes that were going to be the children’s inheritance. Should you need to go into care in later life, your assets will be means tested by the local authority. If the value of your assets, including your home, exceeds £23,250 you will have to pay full care fees. The average cost of care is now in excess of £30,000 a year.

HOW CAN WE LEGALLY PROTECT OUR HOME FROM CARE FEES? There are many 'myths' about protecting your home, such as giving it away to your children (not recommended) the 7 year rule (applies to Inheritance Tax NOT care fees) Common Law Marriage (no such thing in the UK) etc. It is important to receive the correct advice when considering how to protect, so local authorities will not regard it as deliberate deprivation of assets.

MIRROR WILLS

If in your wills you leave everything to each other, and then to the children (mirror wills) you may unintentionally gift the full home to the local authority, should surviving spouse go into care. The children could then be left with very little.

PROPERTY TRUST WILLS LEGALLY PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM CARE FEES Instead of leaving your share of the home to each other on first death, with Property Trust Wills, you each leave your share of the home in trust (ring fenced) for the children, stating they are not to receive it during the lifetime of the surviving spouse, who retains the FULL USE of the home. Should surviving spouse go into care, that half of the home in trust is legally protected from care fees. Guaranteeing at least half the value of your home for your children. If surviving spouse does not go into care, your full home passes to the children on the death of surviving spouse as per your wills. Spouse and children could be the executors, trustees and beneficiaries. By spending a few hundred pounds now on Property Trust Wills, you can legally protect at least half the value of your home

for your children. The cost also includes free probate advice at the time it is needed. If requested, money left on first death to surviving spouse, could also be protected by Money Trusts written into your wills. Surviving spouse could access capital and income from the trust. If surviving spouse goes into care, the money in the trust is safeguarded from care fees. Spouse and children could be the trustees and beneficiaries. Both the Property and Money Trusts protect your children’s inheritance in the event of: Surviving spouse remarrying, Going bankrupt, Changing their will, Children divorcing, IHT mitigation etc. Ask our adviser to explain. All trust wills are drafted by our experienced solicitors who specialise in this field. Trust Wills do not come into effect until first death. Whilst both of you are alive you are still able to sell your home and buy another, spend your money or save your money. Your assets remain under your control. We also recommend Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) which enable your family to legally manage your affairs for your benefit, should you become unable to. Without LPA’s the Court of Protection would take control of your finances. The Local Authority would take control of your welfare, including deciding where you would live. LPA’s can only be made whilst you have mental capacity. They are important. Please ask our adviser to explain. Our service is fully inclusive, our qualified solicitors, who are insured and regulated Members of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) will draft your trust wills to reflect your own requirements. We personally deliver the completed documents to you. Our adviser would also oversee and guide you through the signing process, as it is important that legal documents are signed and witnessed correctly to ensure validity. Members of IPW & SWW, Trading Standards approved, GDPR registered, providing a courteous and professional service since 2006. If you have any concerns, and would like to know more, please CALL US on 0191 206 4007 to arrange a free home or office appointment. Our experienced adviser will be happy to clearly explain and answer any questions you may have. Perhaps it’s time to protect your family...

The restaurant area features an open kitchen where you can watch the team of chefs hard at work creating unique and delicious seafood dishes. The menu highlights are of course the Fish and Chips but also the 'Catch' Signature Seafood Grill, market fresh fish cooked to perfection, prawns, mussels, kiln smoked salmon, chips cooked in beef dripping and a rich sauce or chilli butter. During the week a 'Daily Catch' menu offers diners two courses for £16 or three courses for £20. At weekends the chefs create an individually priced menu where diners can enjoy dishes like Pan Fried King Scallops Roasted Chorizo, Black Pudding and Garlic Butter to start. Surf and Turf, Half Lobster, Ribeye Steak, Vine Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, Beef Dripping Chips and Thermidor Sauce. To round it all off a Chocolate Brownie, Cinder Toffee and Whiskey Chocolate Sauce. 22

Sundays are a family day at Catch with many people coming out for the Sunday menu which offers some tasty seafood specials alongside traditional favourites, roast beef and all the trimmings. Upstairs are 5 large guest rooms with a comfortable and relaxing feel, reminiscent of a Hamptons beach house. Kingsize beds and en-suite bathrooms in each room offers a very comfortable nights stay. Two of the bedrooms feature roll top baths, all of the rooms are full of little touches like portholeshaped mirrors in the bathrooms which reflect the attention to detail that has been paid to the decor throughout the building. Dinner bed and breakfast packages are available starting at £109 for two people. Catch Seafood Ponteland is the third Catch site, the others being located in West Vale and Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Sarah Stuttle (Managing Director) said "I am originally from Newcastle and opening a site close to where I grew up has been a dream come true. We have had a fantastic first year in Ponteland and experienced a real Geordie welcome! We are honoured to have won Hotel Restaurant of the Year at The Food Awards 2018. This is great recognition for the site and down to the hard work of all our team, producing delicious food and exceptional customer service." Booking is advised, and tables can be booked on the Catch Seafood website www.catchseafood.co.uk or by contacting the restaurant directly on 01661 881440. Catch Seafood, A696, Higham Dykes NE20 0DH

Clutter can have a major impact on health and wellbeing. Cath Hindle helps people regain space and organise their belongings as a professional declutterer and organiser.

T

his time last year, Cath Hindle was living a very different life. The 44 year from Cullercoats explains “I had a busy job, two small children and not much time for anything else.” A period of stress and anxiety forced her to revaluate and use the considerable skills she’d acquired over the past 20 years in organisational and corporate services to her new business Clear the Clutter. “I used to spend my days delivering change management coaching and support people to move forward and get organised within the business. I still do this but on a much more personal level helping people regain space and organise their belongings as a professional declutterer and organiser.” Cath started Clear the Clutter last July but thanks to the recent Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, the concept of decluttering and living with less stuff has really captured people’s interest. Cath says: “I don’t work like Marie Kondo but I do encourage clients to really think if an item creates a positive emotion for them and encourage them to get rid of those that don’t. I also love the way she folds clothes and use that method with clients all the time. “ Cath is a member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers and has recently completed training with the Senior Move Partnership specialising in helping older people downsize and move. Her clients range from busy

families, people who struggle to let things go, small businesses who want clearer workspaces, house movers and anyone looking for support in sorting spaces that have got on top of them. Clutter isn’t often recognised as a source of stress but it can have a major impact on health and wellbeing. As well as overtaking physical space, clutter can overtake the mind as it causes the senses to work overtime to try to process what needs to be

done. This makes it difficult to focus on tasks. It causes frustration when items can’t be located quickly or easily and can make people feel guilty or embarrassed that they are not able to “get organised” or invite friends round because of the mess. Clutter creates anxiety when people feel that they are unable to get on top of it or get to the bottom of the pile. Cath says: “Decluttering and organising is immensely satisfying. Think about how you feel when you’ve had a wardrobe clearout – the sense of satisfaction and pleasure at an organised space and the virtue of being able to hand stuff to a charity shop. I get this everyday working with clients and the feeling grows with each new space we tackle.” One highlight from the past year has been a partnership with St Oswald’s hospice. “Unless the client supports another charity, the stuff I declutter goes to St Oswald’s. Each full charity bag raises, on average, £20 for the hospice, so I’m proud to be working with such a worthy cause. It also means that I operate my business very ethically as I always try to find a good home for things rather than sending it to landfill. Over the next few editions, Cath will be providing decluttering tips and tricks of trade. Large Aloe in Concrete Pot, £29.50, Marks & Spencer,

The much-anticipated announcement of Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2019 was recently revealed with Living Coral taking the title. The strong and vibrant colour is described as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone” that effuses warmth and stimulates positivity. It pays homage to the nourishing impact of coral on sea life and sets to remind us of our own impacts on the environment around us. While the introduction of Living Coral in the home can be as simple as adding cushions to a create a playful, expressive space, it can also be taken further such as the inclusion of the Villeroy & Boch Artis washbasin in a Living Coral shade. For the living room the Aragon sofa by Arlo & Jacob is the perfect addition to the space and creates a central focal point at the same time as boosting your mood.

This luxurious, seductive material is the most searched for fabric by consumers and this shows no sign of slowing down in the new year. Its ability to add depth to colours and versatility between rooms only enhances its popularity. While in the past it may have been seen as old fashioned, velvet now has a new identity that is being celebrated in the design sector. Whether it is a blush sofa or deep purple cushions, bringing velvet into the home instantly transforms a room and the pieces are a true design statement.

Jewel tones, large scale designs and scalloped accessories will define spaces within the home in the new year. The use of bold patterned wallpaper creates an opulent vibe and a little can go a long way in a small space such as a hallway or cloakroom and offer a welcome break from muted minimalism. This stylish scalloped mirror woud look perfect in a hallway and the deco inspired Toledo Bedside Drawers lovingly made from acacia wood with attractive brass cladding and a brass finish to the legs and handles adds a touch of 1920’s glamour to your bedroom.

While it has long been a practical material to build property, concrete is now being used throughout the home, inside and out, to create an industrial, architectural feel. From furniture and lighting to kitchenware and plant pots, the brutalist style of concrete is taking over every room in the home, bringing new textural finishes to unexpected places. The wonder of concrete is its ability to mix seamlessly with other materials including wood, marble, copper and brass, all of which can bring warmth to what can easily become a cold style. Unsure about committing to a large piece such as a concrete worktop in the kitchen? Begin with smaller items such as a hanging shelf or candle holder and gradually build up to a more daring, permanent feature.

Not simply a practical necessity in the bathroom and kitchen, taps are the finishing touch to the space. The addition of brass taps can help to soften a room with large concrete features such as a butler sink or island. However, brass can also add a touch of timeless design to a contemporary technology focused bathroom. The statement feature pairs extremely well with dark colourways as well strong materials and is guaranteed to have your guests in awe of your design expertise. Cooke & Lewis Brass

t’s an unshakeable tenet of society both old and new that nothing is lodged deeper in the human heart than the sanctuary you find behind your own front door. It’s indisputable, unmistakeable, and it’s supposed to be untouchable. And yet for many, as health concerns begin to mount, that place of safety can begin to feel like it might very well begin to slip away. With many people facing one or more long term health conditions, the prospect of a move to residential care can cause untold worry and emotional distress. Luckily, as part of a much needed and overdue social care revolution, a solution may just be to hand, one that is tailored to individual care, right in the heart of your home.

Bluebird Care aims to deliver a specialist, individual care service that we would be happy for our family and our loved ones to receive

~

Many in the UK are, however, either unaware or overwhelmed by the huge range of options available to those in need of specialist care, for younger and older people, their children and their families. It can often feel like you’re making your way through a minefield, and issues are not limited to older people. They can include dementia, Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis amongst others. Luckily for those in need of help, bespoke care options have become much more widely available, with many Home Care companies offering specialist services at affordable rates, which allow their customers to stay in control and in the homes and communities they value and depend upon. The United Kingdom Homecare Association (UKHCA) is the national professional body who promote the highest standards of care offered by homecare providers and can offer to help find agencies and organisations that can meet specialist care needs at home. One locally based care company, who are full members of UKHCA, Bluebird Care in Newcastle, took the time to talk to Select Magazine in an effort to raise awareness of the many options available and to explain why many of their satisfied customers choose care in their own homes rather than a permanent move to residential care. David Haswell of Bluebird Care said, ‘From the first day we opened our business, our customers have been at the heart of everything we do.’ He went on, ‘we have revolutionised the way that high quality, bespoke care is delivered in Newcastle, not only to those with specialist needs, but also to their families. Bluebird Care aims to deliver a specialist, individual care service that we would be happy for our family and our loved ones to receive.’ Continued on next page... 35

Continued from previous page...

Indeed, to reinforce the point, Age UK stated in its ‘Briefing on the Health and Care of Older People (2017)’ that only 15% of people of their 80s and 6.5% of people in their 90s are not living with a long-term health condition. Age UK continues, that most people aged 60-84 are living with more than one long term health condition. Despite these figures, Age UK goes on to state that spending on older people’s social care fell ‘steeply to £7.75 billion pounds in 2013.’ Whilst spending on older peoples’ care has seen a small increase since then, the contentious issue was thrown into sharp focus during the 2017 General Election, when social care reform shot straight to the top of political agenda. Bluebird Care, Newcastle, is passionate about offering a homecare service which will significantly improve the lives of those in need of care at home. By providing a tailored, individual care service, Bluebird Care allows the customer to remain in control. This can include being surrounded by the things that matter most to them like personal belongings and family pets, but without sacrificing the care they need. In addition, as far as possible, Bluebird will keep staff changes to a minimum to maintain familiarity. In the light of a much-needed social care revolution, Bluebird will also ensure that every part of the service they deliver is driven by the customer. Finally, an unmistakeable benefit of a reliable, friendly and efficient homecare service, is the alleviation one of the most troubling aspects of our modern society – that of loneliness. Older people can often go weeks or even months without seeing anyone, and with their much needed ‘Loneliness Campaign’, Bluebird is determined to combat the debilitating effects of isolation by continuing to improve its service to all customers.

Find Your Perfect

FLOORING

Looking for the perfect flooring solution for your home? Local flooring experts, Michael Metcalf Carpets explain the benefits of both Luxury Vinyl Tiles and carpet...

40

I

n recent decades, the domestic flooring trade has seen the market flooded with Luxury Vinyl Tile products (LVT). The most popular, trusted, and well known of these being produced by two companies, namely Amtico and Karndean. There has long been an interest in alternatives to carpet, particularly in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and entrance hallways from both a practical and an aesthetic point of view. There was a period of time when many people had their original floorboards sanded flat and varnished to produce a natural ambience to their surroundings. This however was found to reduce the warmth and thermal efficiency of their homes and to increase heating bills. Then laminate was introduced which solved this problem, later being replaced with real wood plank installations, and after that, engineered wood.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

}

Combine the look and feel of wood or stone in combination with the practical benefits of vinyl flooring: warm, durable and sound absorbent.

~

Certainly over the last twenty years however, the trend and fashion is lending toward LVT. The advantage of this product which is made of tough vinyl is that it can be produced with a massive range of designs and colours to complement anyone's particular chosen style, furniture, or installed kitchen or bathroom. This can be selected either during the process of interior design, or indeed following a decoration or new kitchen due to the vast array of choice and availability. It was popular up until recently to have these tiles arranged with borders around the perimeter though most installations now are without borders. Luxury vinyl tiles mainly are available in three different configurations, namely to resemble either wooden floorboards, slate, or ceramic tiles. As ceramic tiles too seem to be fading out of fashion to a degree, most present day installations of LVT are in the floorboard format. The quality of the tiles themselves is determined to a large degree by the thickness of the tough clear vinyl wear layer which covers the coloured layer underneath, and usually a minimum of a 0.50mm wear layer is considered preferable. Amtico is manufactured in the UK and is generally considered to be the toughest and the best choice of vinyl tile. Karndean do not actually manufacture, but as with most other suppliers of these products, source them from the far east. This however does not mean that they are not excellent products, because the manufacturing process is highly regulated due to the market being mainly in the UK and Europe. What is not usually readily understood by the consumer though, is the absolute importance of the installation process. All Amtico and Karndean products are of a superb standard, and to complement this, both companies insist on strict procedures when it comes to having them fitted in one's home so that they will last for many, many years. Installations often fail due to the trade guidelines being ignored, and incorrect or inferior materials being used under the tiles during the sub floor preparation process. Your local experts Michael Metcalf Carpets have over 20 years of experience in the installation of Amtico and Karndean. They offer a complete, personal, and free onsite survey and estimate where advice can be supplied and any questions answered. Their installer works to the highest standard possible, and achieves 100% successful customer satisfaction. In addition to Amtico and Karndean, the showroom at 69 Bridge Street Morpeth, also displays LVT from Distinctive Flooring, another top class company with a beautiful range of modern tile and plank. In all, around 400 variations of colour and design are on display in your local Morpeth high street studio.

Cormar Gemini Carpet

WHY CARPET IS STILL KING While the above products presently reign supreme in kitchen, hallway, bathrooms and toilets, only a few families choose to cover the entire ground floor of their home with vinyl tiles, and almost everyone prefers carpet in the bedrooms. So why is carpet such a dominant floorcovering in the UK? The main consideration is insulation. Carpet with a good quality underlay cannot be beaten when it comes to comfort and warmth, providing a great choice for any home, and they also reduce noise levels. Studies reveal that older people are over three times more likely to suffer a fracture when falling on vinyl floors than if they landed on a carpeted area. Carpet, especially with a good quality polyurethane high density underlay has been shown to help cushion a fall and minimise injuries. It is also for the same reasons, child friendly. A significant point to note is that wool is naturally flame resistant due to its unique chemical structure which has a high nitrogen and moisture content, and this is one reason why wool carpets are used on cruise ships and in major hotels. Additionally there has recently been a huge growth in demand for soft, silky, deep pile carpets, and they have become a firm favourite with homeowners. These carpets are even more akin to cushion a fall. Carpet companies have responded to demand in the market for softness underfoot at an affordable price by launching various ranges that can be found at Michael Metcalf Carpets by the manufacturers Cormar, Cavalier, and Associated Weavers.
