M

ovida hair and beauty is a popular, local salon situated in South Gosforth, with free parking and easy metro and bus access. The warm and friendly salon, which has recently undergone a full refurbishment, is the ideal place to relax and be pampered - whether it is to try a new look for a special occasion, get some dazzling eye-lash extensions or relax with a treatment in their newly renovated beauty room!

The salon always offer great discounts and high-quality treatments to suit everyone, and they firmly believe that every client deserves the best possible treatment at affordable prices. With a wide range of hair treatments and products available, there will be something to suit everyone and every budget. The highly skilled hair stylists will recommend the best possible cut, colour or treatment to suit any clients’ specific needs. They also have skilled beauticians who will give advice on any aspect of beauty therapy, and ensure your treatment, no matter what it is, is relaxing and enjoyable. All of the staff like customers to feel relaxed, revitalised and feel reassured that they are receiving the best possible treatment and service. Movida are always at the forefront of new hair and beauty innovations, and use a revolutionary colour correction eraser, which removes colour from your hair so you can achieve a new colour in the same day. This is an intensive treatment and will take you a full day to complete for excellent results! The team also specialise in pre bonded, micro clip, nano and Keratin bonded hair extensions; making long, luscious locks desirable and affordable. They use only the best Russian, Brazillian or Indian Remy hair, which is 100% human and of a very high quality. Besides offering hair and beauty treatments, you can also explore their wide range of extra services, one of the most popular being their wedding package for that special bride to be. Every bride has a bespoke service to ensure the team give you the look you have always dreamed of having on that special day.

"Movida are always at the forefront of new hair and beauty innovations" The first step is a one to one meeting to really get to know you and understand what you require. This may include a treatment trial to check your skin tone, so the therapist can understand what products work best with your skin type. As well as your treatments and makeup, you will also have your hair styled by one of the expert team. The staff will work closely with you when it comes to this, and will try a variety of styles on you until you’re happy. If you have a specific style in mind, or have a picture bring it along, and they will be more than happy to create the look you have found. Once your makeup and hair is decided, and you are happy with your bridal look, its now time to focus on your nails. On offer is Jessica nail varnish, and GELeration or gel extensions, which are kind to your own nails and give a much more natural finish. Again, however you would like your nails to look, they can do it, patterned, plain sparkly or manicured. On the day, bring your tiara and veil so you can really get a feel of how your finished look will be. The team at Movida want you to be happy and, most of all, to capture the look you have always dreamed of having. The wedding package is very competitive and they look to make it as enjoyable as possible for you in every way. You will be relaxing with a glass of bubbly while the team capture the perfect look for you. All you need to do is sit back and enjoy! If you have members of your bridal party who also require treatments for your wedding day they will be happy to put a package together for them, and discounts will be available on treatments. Have a pamper party with your friends or a girls night/day in at Movida! If you just need a pamper and a relax with friends why not do it in the comfort of their relaxing salon. There will be a choice of treatments, beverages and nibbles on request, all bespoke to your requirements. Whether it’s a Princess party, a hen party or pamper party, at Movida they ensure to make all of their clients relaxed and revitalised and wanting to come back for more! Date For The Diary: Saturday 26th November is Christmas Fair Day at Movida! Come along to the salon from 1pm onwards, and receive a FREE goodie bag full of treats and fantastic offers on products or treatments. THE FLOWER OF THE EAST The Venetians once dubbed Zante – or Zakynthos as it’s also known – ‘The Flower of the Orient’, thanks to its lush countryside. And it’s a nickname that still rings true today. Olive groves, lemon trees and bougainvillea cover the whole island, peeking out from between rolling hills. By Richard Wilson

W

hilst some people think they need to travel to the other side of the world to experience the best beaches, the bluest seas, tropical conditions and the finest food, we think we have found a destination a lot closer to home, which delivers in abundance on each of the above points. Zante, also often known as Zakynthos, is just over 3 hours from Newcastle airport, and gives holiday makers everything they can get from faraway holiday, without the extra expense or hours added on to your journey! Zante is the most southerly of the Ionian Islands, a small group of islands just off the West Coast of Greece, and is one of the most popular Greek islands. Triangular

in shape, the island of Zante has three distinct geographical areas. The north-west is mountainous with quaint traditional mountain villages, the central region is a fertile plain rich with olive groves and vineyards and the south-east is characterised by beautiful beaches. There is something for everyone on the island, with numerous sandy beaches, mountain villages preserving the traditional Greek way of life, beautiful natural scenery, water sports and good quality restaurants, bars and nightclubs to more than cater for all your entertainment needs. The locals welcome tourists with open arms, and offer them the hospitality which Greece is famous for. Zante’s coastline is just as

St John's Villas

impressive as its interior. Sandy shores give way to turquoise seas, caves, and hidden coves, with rugged cliffs offering up grandstand views of the Ionian sunsets. Another part of Zante’s appeal is the fact it caters for all sorts of holidays. Laganas is the place to go for the big clubs, while Tsilivi’s streets are brimming with bars and restaurants. Head for the likes of Alykanas and Kalamaki, meanwhile, and you’ll find soft sands and a more go-slow pace. The resort we will focus on is Tsilivi, a resort which has grown in size and popularity over recent years, yet has still kept its Greek charm. Tsilivi is located just 6km from the capital of the island, Zante Town, on the East coast of the island, and is around 15 minutes via transfer from the airport. The resort has expanded over the last decade or so due to its popularity with couples and families alike, but has still managed to maintain its traditional Greek feel and picture postcard surroundings of olive groves and vineyards. The beach at Tsilivi is one of the best on the island, and is a 2km stretch of soft sand, shallow clear waters and beach side bars and tavernas. It definitely deserves the prestigious Blue Flag it has been awarded! The beach is child friendly and safe for the kids to enjoy, as the sand shelves gently in to the sea and the water is shallow for

"...locals welcome tourists with open arms, and offer them the hospitality which Greece is famous for. over a hundred meters. There are numerous wathersports on offer for the more energetic, and the beach is ideal for families, couples and anyone feeling adventurous. The old resort centre has beautiful stone lines streets, an old chapel, and many gift shops catering for all your needs. In recent years the resort has also gained a reputation for its nightlife which, although is nowhere near the lively Laganas, has an abundance of friendly family run bars, restraunts and tavernas on offer, providing a fantastic night for everyone. There are a fantastic selection of tavernas, all of which are family run, with many growing their own produce, making the traditional dishes even more unique and flavoursome. Tsilivi has a real family friendly atmosphere, beautiful scenery, a spectacular beach, wonderful food, great nightlife, not to mention endless hours of sunshine! In short, it has everything you could wish for from a holiday destination!

PLACES TO STAY St Johns Villas

Ideally situated on a grassy hill on the outskirts of Tsilivi, St Johns Villas offer panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, the village itself and the long sandy beach. The complex consists of 21 villas in total, all with panoramic stunning sea views. There are two types of villas, three bedroom villas measuring 130sqm, or two bedroom villas measuring 100sqm and all have their own private entrance, private parking, gardens and swimming pool. The villas themselves each have their own private pool, with many benefiting from a landscaped lawn area, and all have plenty of sunbathing areas. Each villa is constructed to a high standard and decorated throughout in a modern contemporary design. All of the two bed and three bed villas are luxuriously furnished, with all the facilities that will make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. They all have air-con, individually controlled in each room, multiple shower rooms, a full kitchen, TV’s, a DVD and a secure safety deposit box. The complex also includes a snack bar, a more traditional restaurant, a gym, a beauty salon, a pool table and a mini market. The villas have recently

continued from page 13

undergone modernisation upgrades to maintain their 5 star standards, and the complex itself has new features and services. One fantastic new addition is the breakfast buffet which, for 8.50 euros, represents excellent value for money given the quality of the food! The only thing to note is the hill is quite steep, so car hire is recommended. If not, please allow around 7 euros per trip to the village centre by taxi.

Contessina Hotel

The modern 90 bed hotel has a modern, contemporary feel, yet has still managed to maintain its Greek charm. The hotel is ideally located, only a 2 minute stroll from the beautiful beach, with the main strip of shops, bars and tervernas a 2 minute stroll in the other direction. Don’t worry though, in the evening you cannot hear the noise from the bustling strip, as the hotel is well set back and the evening sounds do not travel to the hotel. The rooms are quite large, with ample sized balconies and most look out on to the pool and bar area. The pool is large enough to accommodate the amount of guests, and there is a pool table, cinema style screen showing movies and sports, and a pool side bar serving a very good standard of food. This is a very high standard Greek hotel for the price, and represents really good value for money given the quality of the rooms and location.

Tsilivi Waterpark

PLACES TO VISIT Tsilivi Waterpark

The waterpark is situated on the outskirts of Tsilivi, just off the main road at the North end of the village. There are a good selection of waterslides on hand to suit everyone, from those young in age, to the young at heart! There is a lazy river and a dedicated children’s area. Sunbeds are a plenty, and the park is never too busy, so there are always plenty available, and this also means the queues are never too long for each ride.

Bowl’m Over

When you think of a beach holiday, indoor ten pin bowling is not something that immediately springs to mind! However, Bowl’m Over does offer a nice alternative to the normal holiday activities and, especially when the sun becomes that little bit

too much, or the kids are reaching boredom thresholds, can provide a real fun afternoon or evening. Bowl’m Over is a state of the art bowling centre, offering 4 bowling lanes and so much more! There are also a good number of pool tables, air hockey tables, a dart board, amusements, a children’s play area and an indoor bar. Once you have expelled all of your energy, there is also a manicured lawn at the front of the centre, with relaxing seated areas for you to while away the evening with one of their renowned cocktails! Oh, and if you are a dog lover, be sure to say hello to the owners friendly sidekick!

Fantasy Mini-Golf

Set in the heart of Tsilivi, just off the main road, you will find the very well maintained Fantasy Mini Golf. There are 3 fun packed 18 hole crazy golf courses, which are fun for all the family. Each course is beautifully laid out, with water features, fun obstacles and challenging undulations, all making for a challenging fun round. The staff are really friendly and will advise you as to which is the best course for you and help you out with the rules and any questions you have. There is even a fully stocked bar to help you either commiserate or celebrate your victory!

continued from page 14 Romios Restaurant

PLACES TO EAT Romios

Set just outside the centre of the village, with easy access from every direction, Romios is an idyllic traditional Greek taverna full of character. The view at sunset from the top tear is spectacular, and the food is a perfect match. They do a full traditional Greek menu, and you will find all of the classic favourites, mixed with a nice selection of seafood and meat dishes. The stand out dish is the traditional shared Meze for two, which consists of the usual selection of meze dishes, plus a few little extra additions, all with Romios unique ingredients and flavours. This is one of the finest restaurants in the resort, and a must visit on your stay.

Dionisios Grill

Set off the main road, and only about 200 yards from the Contessina Hotel (turn right when you leave the Contessina and walk the 200 yards and you will see it on your right), this fantastic little family run taverna is a real hidden gem. The restaurant benefits from stunning views over the Ionian Sea, and the staff make you feel welcome from the minute you arrive, until the minute you begrudgingly leave! The food is traditional Greek (why would you eat anything else!), and the stand out dishes are the Beef Stifado and the Lamb Kleftiko, both cooked with home grown produce giving it that extra special freshness.

FURTHER AFIELD Vassilikos Beach

Situated on the Southeast part of the island, and around a half hour car journey from Tsilivi, Vassilikos has some of the most spectacular beaches on the island. The drive itself takes in some beautiful coastal views and, once you have arrived, you will be greeted with miles of unspoiled, uncrowded golden sands and turquoise waters. There are a handful of eateries set back from the beach, all of which serve a great selection of traditional Greek dishes and beach side snacks. The chef salad comes particularly recommended!

Laganas Bay

Laganas has a lot more to it than its endless array of pubs and clubs. The beach and surrounding bay and islands are home to spectacular sea

Loggerhead Turtle 18

select

life, non-more so than the endangered and rare loggerhead turtles. The turtles migrate to Laganas Bay each year during the months of June, July and August to lay their eggs. The beach is protected during this time with ecologists watching the area round the clock. You can take boat trips around the bay and marvel at these beautiful, peaceful animals, without spoiling their natural habitat. Just off the bay there are the beautiful mini islands of Cameo Island and Marathonisti (nicknamed turtle island because of its amazing likeness in shape to the animal), and the spectacular blue caves. You can pre-book trips to any or all of these from a number of local agents in and around Tsilivi.

Keri Caves

The beautiful Keri Caves are located in the South-West of the island and are only accessible by sea. There are many boat trips available and booking early is advised as,

especially in the Summer months, they are extremely popular. Along the coast there are many caves which entrances scarcely are barely wide enough to seim in to, others are broad enough to enter directly with a boat. While visiting the caves, it is possible to stop to swim or sunbathe in one of the many small beaches of Marathia Cape or to reach by boat the Mizitres. Mizitres are two crags very close to the cliffs that form a small beach of very fine sand, reachable only by boat. You can get really up close and personal with the sea life, so remember to bring your snorkel! Keep a particular eye out for the huge array of starfish.

Shipwreck Beach

On the North West coast of the island you will find Shipwreck Cove or Smugglers Cove, also called Navagio Beach, which is probably the most famous beach in Greece, and

Enjoy a swim around the caves

can only be accessed by boat. This picturesque beach has been photographed and featured in many holiday brochures, travel books and televised advertisements. The boat was shipwrecked back in 1980 after hitting rocks in bad weather while being pursued by the Greek Navy who suspected it was carrying contraband cigarettes (an accusation found to be untrue). Shipwreck Beach is enclosed within large steep cliffs, which give it this remote, inaccessible feel. Because of that, it is impossible to walk to the beach, instead you will need to

take the boat. Frequent boat services are available from nearby ports and harbours and excursions can be booked from a number of outlets in Tsilivi. One thing to note however, if you are planning to lounge in the sun whilst you visit the shipwreck, bring all necessities with you as there are no facilities in this secluded bay. A sun umbrella is a must, as the heat radiates off the white cliffs and there is no shade on the beach to get away from it, especially at midday and through mid-afternoon.. For this reason, and the fact it is so popular and can get VERY busy, the best times to visit are either early in the morning or after 4pm. So, whether it is a relaxing break in the sun, an action packed adventure, or a fun family holiday you are looking for, no need to travel to the other side of the world – give Zante a try, the only problem is you won’t want to leave!

PARLEZ-VOUS

FRANÇAIS? If you fancy learning a new language, Barbara from Lingua Forme is on hand to help. By Margery Wilson

D

o you set off on holiday to sunnier climes hoping that the hotel staff, waiters, shop assistants, bar staff, etc. all speak English?

I always promise myself that I'll learn a few words, even if it's just 'please' and 'thank you', but I never seem to get round to it (and anyway I'm too old to go back to school I tell myself!) Yes, I'm one of the vast army of tourists who use the excuses 'learning a language is too hard; learning a language will take too long; everyone speaks English don't they' to justify my lack of positive action! Learning a new language can be a very fulfilling experience, whether it is something you want to do as a family, are a regular traveller looking to increase your language range, a mature couple retiring abroad, or if you are simply keen to learn. Another myth is that everyone speaks English - I had a comical experience whilst on holiday abroad trying to buy an ankle support in a pharmacy. Believe me, there is only so much you can indicate with hand gestures!! If you like to visit destinations which are somewhat off the beaten track, you may discover few or no English speakers. With this in mind, let us introduce you to Barbara, owner of Lingua Forme, a French conversation classes for Adults business. Barbara is a fully qualified teacher of French with has several years' experience. She has lived and taught in France, in Metz situated in the beautiful Lorraine region. There are about 220 million French-speakers world-wide, so French really can be a 'Lingua Franca'. If you were taught French at school, you may remember it as a less than enjoyable time, sitting in rows chanting phrases and declining verbs on end. If you have been away from school for a number of years you may feel embarrassed to 20

select

be back in a learning situation and unwilling to take the first step. It can take a lot of courage to go through the door for the first time but the effort will be well worth while. For these reasons, let her explain how she runs her sessions. "We sit round a table in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and share knowledge, chat and exchange news. Learning is not confined to any one method but encompasses books, handouts, videos and CD's. We also play games and learn in a supportive atmosphere where NO question is a stupid question (often the question YOU ask is what other people wanted to know but couldn't pluck up the courage to ask.) So, all you need to become a proficient French speaker is dedication, hard work and a willingness to learn (and with a lot of laughs sprinkled through the sessions)" Barbara also runs extra classes for A level, GCSE and one-toone tuition, just call her to discuss availability and times. Barbara is presently running classes in Seaton Sluice and Whitley Bay, covering all levels from beginners to advanced, so please get in touch if you are interested. At the classes you watch videos, listen to CDs and play games, all aimed at making learning fun. The classes are all aimed at putting you at ease and making you want to learn. At Linga Forma no question is a stupid question - it really is a great environment to learn the language. So, why not impress your friends, family and the hotel and restaurant staff on your next visit to the country, and learn a new language – it is never too late to learn French! Gosforth Physio's founder, Kevin Kennedy, has brought together under one roof a team of highly qualified, expert and empathetic clinicians in fields such as podiatry & chiropody, acupuncture, psychology, sports injury & rehabilitation, pilates, yoga and therapeutic massage. With Gosforth Physio and Wellness about to celebrate its first year in business, I went to see for myself exactly what makes this clinic different. I spoke to Kevin Kennedy about his vision… He told me “When I first qualified as a physiotherapist, I became aware that, although there were many examples of good practice in our profession, complementary services were often fragmented and scattered. This meant that many patients with particular issues had to seek out experts in different locations in a bid to solve their problems. It was difficult for patients – and treatments were, by definition, often piecemeal and sometimes almost contradictory. “I was determined that, when the time was right, I would establish a practice that could deliver the best evidence-based, holistic, physical and psychological services to patients – all in one place. 26

select

“At Gosforth Physio and Wellness, we aim firstly to help our patients fully understand their physical, cognitive and emotional difficulties. Our treatments then help patients restore and maintain their optimum health, wellbeing and performance. We know that time spent assessing, educating and treating each person as an individual speeds their recovery and helps them achieve their goals quicker. “People lead busy lives, so at Gosforth Physio we also offer relaxing, therapeutic massages to help soothe away stress. Our pilates classes are run by a qualified physiotherapist, and our yoga classes are supervised by experienced, qualified teachers. We also provide mindfulness courses run by a qualified clinical psychologist. All of these extra patient services are why we use 'wellness' in our clinic's name”. Coming away from Gosforth Physio and Wellness it struck me that, like all good ideas, Kevin Kennedy's is a simple one. Offer people first-class physio and complementary treatments all in one place? GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Nourishing Fertility

Acupuncture is becoming a popular choice that couples are turning to in order to help them conceive. Louise Collyer, Acupuncturist explains that many of her patients report it helps them feel proactive, relaxed and nurtured through what can become a very stressful time.

Unexplained fertility has now become a common diagnosis for when female blood samples have come back normal and the man’s sample is optimal. So why are couples not conceiving? This is where Oriental Medicine comes into its own. At the first consultation with a couple we will ask questions that explore their general health and lifestyle. We look at the length of the woman’s cycle and whether it is regular or irregular, the quality of the bleed and any associated menstrual problems and whether both couples are getting enough sleep/nutrition/relaxation time. Sometimes just a few tweaks to diet and lifestyle can be enough of a change to aid conception. But when we add acupuncture to the mixture, we begin to see many changes. In cases of women failing to ovulate, we can help to stimulate it. Where we might be seeing implantation failure or repeat early miscarriage, acupuncture has helped many of our patients to make it through to the second trimester and see a healthy 12 week scan. By enhancing blood flow to the reproductive organs and uterus and reducing stress in the body, acupuncture is a fantastic aid to fertility. A patient of mine had been struggling to conceive and was being referred for IVF. She had been given an extremely unhelpful diagnosis 34

select

by a consultant who told her that she had ageing ovaries at 34. In fact her ovarian reserve was fine and it was elevated FSH of 15.6 (caused by work stress and lifestyle) that led to this diagnosis. We started fortnightly acupuncture in January 2014 and by June 2014 her FSH was down to 10. She had a round of IVF in July 2014 which failed and so we carried on with acupuncture and in November when she was due to start the stimulating phase of IVF we discovered she had conceived naturally. She believed it was down to making the suggested lifestyle changes she and I had discussed – like taking more time out to relax and reduce her exercise schedule – and the acupuncture. Louise Collyer PGDip Acu, MBAcC, is an established acupuncturist with a special interest in gynaecology, women’s health and fertility. LONG TERM CONDITIONS AND THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

or many people, living with a long term condition for the rest of their lives leaves that feeling of compromised health and potentially a reduced life expectancy. Whilst intervention with medicines is a necessity, in most cases the feeling of dependence on medicine and treatments often brings a reluctant acceptance that life is never going to get back to the way it was when they were younger and fitter. Modern healthcare does offer real hope and help, but what else can an individual able to do to make their body function better, and last right through old age like their fitter physical counterparts? Let’s review the most common long term conditions that people suffer from, and see how you could get a better body for the future. Hypertension – High blood pressure is common amongst all ages’ groups due to unhealthy eating, lack of exercise, stress, genetics, environment, or a combination of more than one of the above. Diabetes Type 2 – Now recognised as a major health problem in the Western World, as more refined sugars are consumed and less exercise undergone. Rheumatoid Arthritis – An auto-immune disease which relies on disease modifying drugs to control the side effects of this debilitating condition. Rheumatism – Wear and tear on the joints of the body restricts mobility and movement normally becoming progressively worse due to aging. These four long term conditions all have the potential to be improved with specific exercise and training. The team at Axis Fitness have GP Qualified Instructors who can work with you to address your needs and concerns, and you will see an improvement in your health. Modern research in to all of these conditions has proved that a fitter body increases the benefits of medication, slows disease progression and, in some cases, can even reverse those effects. Hypertension is a condition which is improved with exercise, and

in one on one consultations with the team at Axis, you can get your own specially designed fitness regime which is easy to follow and will help to improve your health. Recent research at Newcastle University demonstrated the reduction of the effects of Diabetes Type 2 by a specific aerobic routine completed 2 to 3 times per week. And no need to worry, this is not the type of routine where you will be spending hours on the treadmill! In fact, less than 20 minutes per aerobic session will improve your condition if performed correctly, does that sound good? So, whatever your condition or fitness needs, give the team at Axis Fitness a call, and you can even benefit from their fantastic offer of your first 2 weeks membership only 99p! Dog Lovers Urgently Needed! Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a national Charity that trains clever dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds, is urgently looking for dog-loving volunteers in Tyne & Wear, to take care of and help train their adorable puppies. The role of a volunteer dog trainer is to look after a gorgeous pup in their own home from 8 weeks old, for around 16 months. Volunteers provide the puppy with skills and obedience training, and take them along to weekly puppy classes and into as many different environments as possible. All volunteers are fully supported by the Charity’s expert dog trainers, who provide guidance every step of the way. Alyson Embleton from Tyne & Wear talks about

her experience so far as a volunteer dog trainer for Hearing Dogs: “When I saw a poster looking for volunteers to help train a puppy for Hearing Dogs I just knew this was something I really wanted to get involved with. “Shortly after being signed up as a volunteer I received my first puppy, Gracie, a gorgeous yellow Labrador. I absolutely love the challenge of learning how to train her.” “Having time, patience and routine really matters within this role, and Gracie is doing just fantastically. My Puppy Training Instructors are so supportive, they teach me the skills to then practise on a daily basis at home with Gracie. It's just so rewarding for me to see how Gracie is learning and growing week by week.” Puppy Training Instructor Lucy Parkin adds: “If you live in or around Tyne & Wear and are looking for a new challenge, then why not give something back and meet some loveable lifechanging puppies along the way? As long as you have a car, a secure, private garden, and enough time to train a puppy daily, then we would absolutely love to hear from you. You really can make such an enormous difference.” To find out more about volunteer dog training, contact the volunteering team on volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk , 01844 348122 or visit our website www.hearingdogs.org.uk/volunteer

SERENITY IN THE CITY: Newcastle Meditation Centre on Westgate road opposite the Mile Castle lose, it was free, it was raining and we could always leave….. surely it was better than diving in the nearby bar for a cheeky prosecco? We went in. No smell of incense, no sound of dubious mantra-chanting, no one in flowing robes. I was totally surprised. There were chairs, blokes as well as women. A real mix of age and stage and a really welcoming sense of calm. We joined in with a morning hour session led by expert Nicholas Buxton. His gentle guidance and explanations helped us meditate for five minutes and then we went for a 10minute session and after a break (complete with coffee) a 20minute session. It was nothing like I imagined and I can’t tell you how much better I felt afterwards. I spoke to Nicholas to find out what ‘brand of mindfulness’ this was, was there a book (not yet but soon I’m told). Nicholas said that, it’s ‘JUST MEDITATION’, it derives from some religious tradition and the modern practice of mindfulness but is designed to be non-threatening, fully inclusive and accessible to all: - His own brand of ‘Everyday meditation for Everyone.’ Since then I have popped in regularly- sometimes for the spare 20 minutes before catching a train. I’m not an expert at meditation and I don’t suppose I’m doing it properly. I haven’t progressed to trying it out by myself at home yet (too risky right now!) but I have to admit I do feel better and do have that elusive sense of serenity after meditating. So, when you’re next in town, way-laden with shopping and full of angst about the constant real daily pressure of life, drop in for 10 minutes. Make the most of the open meditation space (you can sit on chairs, cushions or the floor). Meditation is not some dodgy religion, it’s a wonderful stress busting technique that really does help us stop and be in the present moment, even if those moments only last ten minutes. Perhaps meditation really is the secret of that ‘Je ne sais quoi.’ For more information, check out www.justmeditation.org

Going, going,

GONE!

AUCTION HOPES TO DRAW A BIG CROWD TO CONTRIBUTE TO MEMORIAL PROJECT

G

oing-going-GONE! Is what the North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project (NSFHP) are hoping will happen when a 1911 watercolour by renowned local artist John Chambers goes under the hammer at The Low Lights Tavern on Tuesday 18 October from 7pm. The painting was donated to NSFHP by the artists Great Great Nephew, Keith Bell to help with their fundraising efforts. NSFHP are aiming to raise around £75,000 to build a lasting and fitting memorial to fishermen lost at sea from the port of North Shields. Keith Bell said “The Chambers family were pilots and lived in what is now The Old Low Light Heritage Centre on The Fish Quay in North Shields after its conversion to Alms Houses. My Great Great Uncle, John Chambers also joined the Tyne Pilot Service, but really wanted to be an artist – he loved to draw and paint ships and other nautical subjects”. The painting has been valued by

Tynemouth Fine art and will be one of the main ‘lots’ being auctioned by actor and former auctioneer, Bertie Forster. Keith Bell said “I am delighted to donate the painting to the memorial fundraising, let’s hope the evening raises a lot of money for this great cause.” Keith has also allowed NSFHP to sell 100 Limited Edition Prints of the painting to raise even more funds for the memorial. A variety of other items have also been donated to the auction, including: • An original painting of The Gaul/Ranger Castor by artist/ fisherman Michael Smith • 18 holes of golf for 4 at Matfen Hall • 6ft model yacht of the Shamrock V – donated by Bertie Forster • Framed watercolour by wildlife artist Steve Cale – donated by Dave Young • A framed signed print of the fish quay by local artist David Henshaw – donated by Tynemouth Fine Art • A signed copy of James Alders “The Birds and Flowers of Castle Mey and Balmoral” – donated by Steve Lowe on behalf of Northumberland Wildlife Trust – Living Seas • Plus a unique opportunity: A sea trip for two lasting 6-8 hours working alongside the crew on board Patrol Boat

St Aidan - donated by The Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. Keith Spedding of NSFHP said “We have been amazed by the level of generosity and willingness to help us out from the local community and businesses. We are hoping to draw a big crowd at The Low Lights Tavern on auction night and raise a lot of money for the memorial project. There’ll also be a raffle on the night with some fantastic prizes - it’s going to be a great evening.” The auction takes place just a few days after the “big reveal” of the chosen memorial design. The public have been voting and donating in person and on-line since 18 July for their favourite design and on Saturday 15 October voting closes and all will be revealed during a live music event at The Exchange in Howard Street, North Shields. The Palominos and young local guitarist Connor Thomas will be performing at “When the VOTE comes in” from 7:30pm and during the evening, the memorial that polled the most votes will be announced and commissioned. Keith Spedding said ”We are all very excited to see what the winning design will be, and it’s a great opportunity for local people to be there as it happens!” Details of these events can be found on www.nsfhp.org.uk/events

LIFESTYLE

THE SLEEP AND STRESS CONNECTION By Irene Anderson, creator of Mind, Body Flow and The Happiness Project

W

e are now in a world of hustle and bustle, buying and getting, striving and achieving, being busy and always on the go, constantly plugged in to social media, smart phones and ipods. Where a 'have more, 'be more' mentality is predominant, it is no wonder that more and more of us are suffering from the effects of stress. Stress manifests itself in many ways. Headaches, stomach problems, social anxiety, being “snappy” or over emotional, and weight gain (particularly around the midsection), are just a few of the tell-tale signs that your body is under stress. When we are stressed the brain goes into “fight or flight” mode as it detects danger. It then floods the body with two hormones, Cortisol and Adrenalin, which, in a short term emergency situation is useful, but over a long period of time is very damaging to the body and has been proven to be a major contributor to serious illness. MY TOP TIP FOR MANAGING STRESS - SLEEP ON IT! One of the very best things we can do to reduce the effects of stress is to get a really good night's sleep. When we sleep not only does the body rest and repair but, probably more importantly, the brain makes sense of the happenings of the day, recharges, reorganises and detoxes. Many scientists believe that what happens in our brain during sleep is crucial to our well-being and our ability to combat stress.

52

select

During sleep the brain clears out junk from the day that we don’t need to remember and repairs and 'detoxes' (a great help against Alzheimer’s) Sleep consolidates what we have learned during the day helping with storing new information into our memory banks. Getting a good night's sleep after studying for a test or learning something new, hugely increases our ability to perform better, and improves our long term memory. Sleep also helps reduce the 'fight or flight' hormones Cortisol and Adrenaline which keep us 'wired' and on edge. TIPS FOR A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Get some physical exercise in during the day. 30 minutes is brilliant, walk, dance, swim cycle or take a class you enjoy Turn off smart phones etc. about an hour before bed. Have a warm bath or shower. Eating a banana (the Melatonin in it can help with sleep) and / or having warm drink can psychologically get you ready for sleep . Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea) both of which are stimulants. Avoid alcohol, it will get you to sleep quickly but will contribute to a broken night. Keep your room cool and dark. Take some deep breaths, focus on counting in for 4 and out for 4.

SEASONAL ADVENTURES If you fancy a trip away to get you in the mood for Christmas, here are a selection of the best across the UK.

LINCOLN 1 – 4 December

You'll need to get your skates on if you want to visit Lincoln's market, as it's held over just four days this year, opening at noon on Thursday December 1. Lincoln brought the first traditional German Christmas market to the UK in 1982 as part of its twinning with the German town of Neustadt. Originally there were just 11 stalls in Castle Square, which have now multiplied to more than 200, selling a wide range of craft and food products and set around the city's lovely cathedral and castle. A funfair and big wheel will be installed for the weekend, live bands will provide entertainment and there will be a traditional carol service in Lincoln Cathedral on the evening of December 4. www.visitlincoln.com/whats-on/lincoln-christmasmarket-2016

bangers to performances of Cinderella at the venerable Theatre Royal. Do pop into the Bath Guildhall Market, which has its own seasonal specials, from chocolate wine and gardening equipment to hats and chutneys. www.bathchristmasmarket.co.uk

BIRMINGHAM

17 November – 29 December Birminghams Frankfurt market lays claim to being the biggest German-style Christmas market outside Germany, with over 180 wooden chalets. Open from 10am to 9pm it is spread across Victoria Square, Centenary Square, Chamberlain Square and New Street. Handmade decorations, traditional wooden toys, leatherwork and crystal lamps are among the most popular items on sale, while gingerbread, marzipan, pretzels, schnitzels, bratwursts and mulled wine fuel the shopping.

Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Abbey and the Pump Room, Bath Christmas Market fills the elegant Georgian streets. Most of the 175 wooden chalet-like stalls feature gifts from the South West: lavender from Somerset, jewellery made in Bath, honey from Wiltshire, soaps handmade in Gloucestershire. In the spirit of giving, one chalet is dedicated to a different charity each day. Overall, the city is a British delight, from piping-hot

decorations, jewellery, paintings and prints, bags, hats and children's toys. And, just beyond the Close, there is more excellent shopping in The Square and Parchment street. If the usual Christmas market fare of mulled wine, bratwurst, mince pies and stollen isn't to your taste, Rick Stein and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have just opened restaurants in the city (rickstein.com and rivercottage. net), or wander down the sideroads and alleys of the compact city centre to find attractive cafes and teashops. drinks and delicately crafted Yuletide gifts in the heart of this buzzing city. With more than 300 beautifully festooned stalls and chalets spread across the city centre, the Christmas Markets are free and accessible to all. Soak up the atmosphere and follow the market trail as it winds through the city centre, tempting you with gifts, crafts, jewellery, clothes and toys. European and local producers offer everything from fine amber jewellery, handcrafted leather bags and top-quality bonsai trees, to handmade Belgian kitchenware, framed photo prints and French soaps. And, when planning your visit, don't miss the amazing array of food and drink! Manchester's Christmas Markets are famous for traditional bratwurst, but you can also treat yourself to Hungarian goulash, Spanish paella or a good oldfashioned hog roast.

So much to write, so little time… Sound familiar? Maybe it's time to bring in reinforcements - and hiring a professional copywriter may just be the answer. Here are 10 good reasons why you should hire one (compiled by Michael O’Sullivan from The Word Wizard): 1. They will put the time in to do the job right. Let’s face it: even if you or another staff member can write well, do you have the time to write what you need for your business? A freelance copywriter will make time for your project and give it their full attention. 2. They know a little about a lot. Freelance writers gain knowledge & experience with every piece they write. A freelance writer focuses on more than readability, spelling, grammar and basic sentence structure. They know how to make your copy appealing; how to make it sing. 4. They offer a fresh set of eyes. They’ll clean up your copy; give it some polish; make it easy to understand. 5. They can help improve your sales. They’ll focus on your products or services from your customer’s point of view - and sell them the benefits, not just the features. 6. They are professional. They’ll take time to understand your company’s unique needs; they’ll meet deadlines, pay attention to detail 60
