Welcome Back to Concept It’s so good to see you again. As the world unfurls to return to a new ‘normality’, the team at Concept have been working hard behind the scenes, to provide the local community, essential and emergency eye care during an unprecedented time. People are at the heart of everything this independent eye clinic does, and that means putting carefully designed health and safety adaptations in place without compromising on the bespoke Concept ‘experience’. From being at home to navigating a changed landscape, the experience of being confined has left an indelible imprint on our sense of well being. We take our eyes for granted. How many of us were prepared for ‘lockdown’ with a spare pair of spectacles, prescription sunglasses, or the reassurance of a recent eye

Lockdown De-cluttering Cath Hindle, professional decluttering and organising expert offers her advice on ditching the clutter in your home Decluttering over the last couple of months has been difficult as the majority of the usual places (charity shops, pass it on sites) haven’t been operating. Thankfully some avenues have now opened up including my favourite The Community School Clothing Scheme who support families in crisis across the area and Facebook’s Pass it On Groups. Additionally, the online sites such as Music Magpie for CDs, games and books and Vintage Cash Cow for jewellery and other specialist items have remained open and pay you for your unwanted stuff. With this in mind and the fact that many of us have spent / are spending much more time at home at the moment, here’s a few tips to ensure decluttering success during this tricky period: ➊ William Morris said: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” In other words – if you don’t love it or use it; lose it! Follow this rule and you won’t go far wrong. ➋ Don’t overwhelm yourself with a huge project to start with. I often ease clients into decluttering by starting off with that drawer in the kitchen – you know, the one with flyers, sellotape, a few elastic bands, the odd screwdriver, an old fuse, phone charger and perhaps some cutlery. By starting off with a small space or area (coat rack, spice drawer, Tupperware) you quickly get to see and feel the satisfaction of clearing and organising. ➌ When faced with an area or pile of things to declutter, divide them into 3 piles called yes, no and maybe. Spend the most time on your maybe pile and ask 10

yourself if you love or use an item to decide whether to keep it (good old William Morris. Once you’ve decided on your no pile, make the effort to get rid of or pass on the items so they aren’t cluttering up your home. ➍ Use the boxes, baskets, drawers and cupboards that you already have in your home. Very few of my clients ever need additional storage. Don’t waste money on storage boxes – they just add to the clutter! ➎ Here’s few a things you could have a go at getting rid of today: • Items you “should” use but don’t – exercise equipment, smoothie makers etc. • Things that cost a lot but you still don’t use. This is often clothes and kitchen equipment such as bread makers. • Anything broken or inoperable that you are planning on fixing but haven’t (lamps) • Heirlooms or gifts that you don’t love. • Anything uncomfortable (see expensive clothes point) • Magazines and books you’ve never got round to reading (even

during lockdown) • Old electronics especially cables. Now is the perfect opportunity to match your electronics to their respective cables and throw away anything that doesn’t match or work. It’s a time consuming but very satisfying job. • Out of date paperwork. Think about how many of your files and information can be found online – bank statements, insurance documentation, instruction books etc. Some financial records do need to be kept for seven years but the majority of it can be recycled, shredded (note: most local authorities don’t recycle shredded paper). If you have a lot, some local shredding companies are operating again and can collect or accept drop offs. However you choose to pass on your decluttered items, make sure you adhere to social distancing measures, stay safe and wash your hands (although I think the last one has always been excellent advice!) www.clear-the-clutter.co.uk 07982044639 Cath@clear-the-clutter.co.uk

FAMOUS 4.15 DO YOUR LITTLE ONES LOVE TO SING, DANCE AND ACT?

Since 2001, the highly experienced team at Famous 4.15 have built classes based on the Famous philosophy #IAMME, where performing arts is relevant, exciting, fun and where friends are made for life. They offer classes for children & young people who want to develop their performance skills, social skills and confidence whilst feeling free to be themselves in a nurturing and supportive environment. Based at Gosforth Civic Theatre, the company teach singing, dance and drama, in a fun and friendly environment, encouraging freedom of expression, whilst keeping things fresh and making learning fun. Famous 4.15 is not a franchise. They pride themselves on being an established, independent company created in the North-East, with connections world wide; thus allowing them to deliver a unique, modern and personalised

The Famous ethos is simple: everyone can have his or her chance to shine, whether that means fifteen minutes spent singing into a hairbrush or a major role on stage or screen. We offer training that is relevant, exciting and inclusive but most of all we inspire self-belief, confidence and encourage everyone to be proud of who they are.

CHILDREN

The Art of Home-School

By Debra Grant

M

ost children love to draw or paint. While so many of us are stuck at home it’s a great way to keep them occupied too. A few friends wondered if they should be encouraging more ‘mind-improving’ activities such as maths and English worksheets. Art tends to be viewed as a ‘bolt-on’ extra in school. But art is so much more, and along with music should be given a much more prominent role within education. Drawing, painting and sculpting help mental, social, and emotional development. Creating art boosts our ability to analyse and problemsolve. As a conscript teacher in the ‘school of mum and dad’ it’s easy to fall into the trap of ’right and wrong’ when we would be better to remember that art should be about the process rather than the product. As children manipulate a paintbrush or pencil, their fine motor skills improve. As they mix colours they learn about proportions, and when they experiment with different media they dabble in science. Most importantly if a child feels good about being able to experiment while creating art, it boosts their self-confidence. Children who feel able to try things and make mistakes develop more creative ways to think which extend beyond their artwork. Lots of parents don’t feel comfortable with art, because unlike maths there isn’t a ‘correct’ way to do it’, or they feel they have to intervene to make things look ’right’. So, I’ve put together a list of art websites that offer tutorials aimed at the children themselves rather than at their parents. They all use real world art equipment, not digital platforms and have all been tested by my own 10-yearold artist-in-residence.

12

www.artforkidshub.com This is a lovely art website for kids. It has hundreds of tutorials, mostly for drawing, but some painting and origami too. Mr Hub does the drawings in a slightly speeded up time scale, but the instructions are clear and easy to follow. artprojectsforkids.org This site is run by an art teacher who has put together lots of fun art projects for kids. There are drawing lessons and craft projects. stepbysteppainting.net A great site packed with online step-by-step canvas painting tutorials, suitable for all the family, with a complete section dedicated to kids. Older kids who are keen artists will love the more grown-up painting tutorials too. thepaintrepublic.com on Facebook This is our favourite site by a country mile. Lindsay teaches live sessions on Facebook a couple of times per week. The tutorials then stay on the page so that children can access them at any time.

She’s an encouraging, enthusiastic teacher and paints along with her sons, who are funny, lively and very normal, and this is the big bonus for my own son, who is missing his friends and the banter of the classroom. The silly incidents and funny anecdotes our children bring home are woven into the tapestry of their day-to-day existence, and at the moment that part of their lives is on hold. Lindsay and her boys are a breath of fresh air in our house. The art is great, and she also leads adult classes for when the kids are in bed. Cannot recommend this one highly enough. If your children would like real life hands-on tuition, Turpentyne, based in Gosforth, offer Fine Art and Drawing classes. They are currently taking bookings for July and August summer workshops. They are monitoring the guidelines with regards covid-19 and updates will follow on both their website www.turpentyne.com and their facebook page www.facebook. com/turpentyne

They are also registered with the HCPC (Health & Care Professionals Council). On your first visit you will receive a full consultation and treatment. Gait Analysis and Biomechanics is available and is used to identify posture-related or movementrelated problems. Struggling with hearing loss, tinnitus, or dizziness? LOCAL AUDIOLOGISTS, NE1HEAR EXPLAIN HOW THEY CAN HELP

A

re you struggling with hearing loss, tinnitus, or dizziness? Do you feel you are losing your confidence or becoming isolated? Are you frustrated or fatigued by it? Can NE1Hear help? NE1hear is a local group of four Audiologists. Between us we have over 60 years’ experience within the NHS and have now branched into the private sector to offer personalised treatment programmes. At NE1Hear we pride ourselves on providing a complete Audiology Service which is easily accessible to help alleviate some of the distress these problems can cause. We will listen to your concerns, help educate you in what help is available, discuss options with regards modern hearing aid technology or ear protection and perform any diagnostic tests needed. NE1hear is the only private Audiology service in the North East that can offer a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative treatments. We give free ear health checks for those who are just worried that they may be getting an infection or have a build-up of wax. Getting wax removed has become more difficult lately, with many GP surgeries not able to offer this service anymore. We provide wax removal via micro suction which is a safe, effective and a more comfortable experience. We are proud to have installed a fully sound proofed booth suitable for Industrial Screening and Retail Audiometry. Claire Seago, Kathryn Rankin and Emily Barlow offer personalised advice on coping with hearing loss and when appropriate, help you make the correct choice regarding aiding. Hearing aid technology has advanced so much over recent years that not only can we treat the hearing loss, but we can also provide wireless connectivity to a variety of devices including TV, mobile phones and laptops to improve the listening experience. NE1Hear promotes the importance of protecting your hearing and we can all provide information about a wide variety of ear protection to suit whatever your needs are. From playing in an orchestra, listening to live music, nightclubbing or working with heavy machinery, we can help you protect against the resulting ringing in your ears which most of us have experienced at some point in life.

“We are the only private Audiology service in the North East that can offer a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative treatments.” 18

We are aware one in ten adults suffer from tinnitus and for 1% of those it can really affect their quality of life. Kathryn and Claire offer tinnitus assessment and rehabilitation advice. They are dedicated to offering quick intervention, putting in place management techniques and strategies which enable people to cope better with the condition. For those who have problems with their balance, Clare Bates can provide balance assessment and rehabilitation appointments. Inner ear balance conditions can be complex, disabling and very alarming. Clare’s aim is to reduce the incidence of falls, fear of falling, associated anxiety and improve education in how to manage dizzy symptoms. Exercises can often help when correctly prescribed and performed. Home visits can be provided if travelling isn’t an option for you. Should it be necessary, we will consult with your GP, recommending referral onward to an ENT consultant for further investigation. Please be reassured we work within the most recent National standards and procedures. NE1Hear’s office is situated inside Milburn House, Dean Street, in Newcastle. It’s a convenient location for clients travelling on public transport and there is a multistory car park just opposite for those driving. There are lifts making it accessible for those with disabilities. For more information about product offers and a price guide please visit our website. Claire, Clare, Kathryn or Emily can be contacted by phone or email and should you wish to pop in and leave a message there is a manned reception desk just inside the entrance to Milburn House. Peace of Mind with BlueBird Care WITH LIVE-IN CARE,YOU HAVE THE POWER TO STAY IN YOUR OWN HOME EXPLAINS DAVID HASWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF BLUEBIRD CARE NEWCASTLE

I

t can be an emotional time when the conversation arises about needing more support to live at home, or if you have the overwhelming feeling that you or a loved one might have to move into a care home. A whole mix of emotions rise to the surface and this can be a very stressful time. The good news is that you are not alone in this feeling, here at Bluebird Care we are here to take that stress away and give peace of mind. We are often approached by prospective customers, or their loves ones, who just feel overwhelmed. A lot of the information out there points towards task-based home care and a loss of independence, but that doesn’t have to be the case, nor does the upheaval of moving into a care home. Whether it be Outstanding Rated premium Home Care Service or Our Premium Live-in Care Service, we can tailor a care package around your needs, wishes and lifestyle. With live-in care, you have the power to stay in your own home Home sweet home, there’s nowhere like it. Surrounded by happy memories, it’s probably the place where we all feel most relaxed. So why throw it all away just because they need a little help here and there? Help them to remain happy and as independent as possible in their own home while you feel comfortable that they’re safe. At Bluebird Care, we passionately believe in helping

people who want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Our award-winning and outstanding rated care makes it possible to continue to enjoy the comfort and familiarity of home while receiving the very highest standards of 24/7 live-in help. The quality 24-hour live-in care we offer is a viable, affordable and preferred alternative to residential care for many people who wish to stay in their own home, while maintaining their independence and enjoying the freedom to continue their current lifestyle. Above all else, our outstanding-rated and highlyskilled Bluebirds give those they look after, and their families and loved ones, security and peace of mind. Our experience makes us the best at offering the very highest standards of home care and live-in care in Newcastle, and we are proud to have been recognised by our Regulators CQC with an Overall Outstanding from CQC which is the highest grade possible. Companionship and support One of the most important and valued aspects of a live-in carer’s role is the provision of companionship and support. For many people with live-in carers, simply having someone friendly on hand to chat with about their opinions and experiences can improve their happiness and quality of life immeasurably. In cases where friends or family are able to visit only intermittently, or are absent altogether, a live-in carer can be a best friend to the person receiving care. Sharing quality time with an understanding and caring friend is both comforting and therapeutic. In this capacity, a live-in carer can become a trusted companion with whom to enjoy recreational activities such as trips to the cinema or social club; take short breaks with; play cards or games or share a hobby with. They may simply be someone that the person receiving care may relax and chat with over a cup of tea. Live-in carers provide security and peace of mind Above all else, live-in carers give those they care for, and their families and loved ones, security and peace of mind. Knowing that a fully trained, compassionate and trustworthy live-in carer is always around to ensure continued wellbeing and safety, and who can respond quickly and appropriately in the event of an emergency, is immensely reassuring. Find out more about the livein care provided by Bluebird Care and more about the benefits of live-in care here. Or to speak to someone about your live-in care requirements please call us on 0191 341 0190. www.bluebirdcare.co.uk/newcastle

WHAT CAN I USE INSTEAD OF…?

Empty supermarket shelves require some kitchen creativity

By Sarah Davey

It’s frustrating when you want to bake but don’t have some of the ingredients. You don’t want to make an unnecessary trip out to the supermarket at the moment, and you’re not sure they’ll have what you need when you get there anyway! Or maybe you’re in the supermarket and they don’t have exactly what’s on your shopping list. Here are some substitutions you might be able to make. Buttermilk – You can substitute plain yoghurt. If you only have thick yoghurt you can think it with a little milk, or water. If you don’t have yoghurt you can use 240mls (1 cup) of milk mixed well with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. Butter – If your cake calls for butter and there is none, use coconut oil or vegetable oil instead. Dark brown sugar – Use ¼ cup of treacle to 1 cup of granulated sugar, or 1 tablespoon of treacle to 1 cup of light brown sugar. Double Cream – Evaporated milk can be substituted 1:1, or use 120mls milk + 80mls melted butter. Caster sugar – If you have granulated sugar you can blend it in a mini-blender, but it’s best reserved for muffins and coarser textured cakes rather than fine sponges. Eggs – amazingly you can get away without eggs in some cakes. Try substituting ¼ cup of mashed banana or ¼ cup vegetable oil. If substituting two

22

eggs I would mix the banana option with the vegetable oil option. You can also use 1 tablespoon of ground or milled linseed /flax seed to three tablespoons of water to replace one egg. Mix together and leave to stand for a few minutes. This is a well-known vegan substitute for eggs which can come in useful if you keep a pack of ground linseed on standby.

Baking powder – mix ¼ teaspoon baking soda with ½ teaspoon cream of tartar to make 1 teaspoon of baking powder. Vinegar – replace the vinegar with the same amount of lemon or lime juice, or double the amount of white wine. Yoghurt – sour cream and buttermilk are interchangeable when baking.

holiday at home

Amongst the many adjustments we have recently had to make in our lives over the past few weeks, it is fair to say we could all use a holiday. We can still enjoy a break whilst keeping safe and staying at home. After all, holidays are all about barbecues and picnics, and in years to come we will reflect on the memories made during this time together as a family.

A SPLASH OF COLOUR

Getting creative with your own outdoor space will last right through the summer and beyond. Once you’ve set up your relaxation area or dining spot, having a twinkling warm white canopy overhead works wonders. Use poles as the perfect support if there’s no obvious place to string the lights between. Next think about your ground level and which areas look a little dark during the evening. What better way to create light and warmth than lanterns? Ultimately, they work best on a firm surface, and cast beautiful shadows. Colour is the best way to instantly inject a feeling of fun, for all ages. A string of solar multi coloured festoon lights, a rainbow parasol or a quirky planter will do just the trick.

❷ MOVIE NIGHT

If you have a projector at home, and some deck chairs, why not consider making your very own alfresco cinema? Simply hang a white sheet over two poles or even a washing line, bring some cushions outside and add the perfect mood lighting. It’s time to enjoy a little light hearted fun whilst indulging in popcorn and other treats.

DATE

NIGHT

Time together to chat as a couple is now more important than ever. If you have an outdoor firepit why not make your very own campfire, with the essential drinks and snacks to accompany, of course. If you don’t have a firepit, micro lights intertwined around logs are an effective and safe alternative. Flickering outdoor TruGlow candles are a wonderful addition to the setting. You’ll have a glow each evening for 6 hours. Fully waterproof, too, so you can enjoy all summer long, and if the night feels too cool to sit out, you’ll still be able to appreciate them from indoors.

LOCAL NEWS

A Traditional Taste of the North-East With over 100 recipes across the whole 12-part series, Gilli Davies’ Flavours of England provides a perfect insight into English culinary traditions and covers some of the most important recipes from the North-East of England, such as kippers, Gateshead floddies and Yorkshire curd tart.

E

ngland’s many culinary traditions and dishes have maintained their popularity for centuries, with recipes handed down from generation to generation and often with a personal twist or secret ingredient. National institutions such as roast meats with seasonal vegetables, a full English breakfast, or afternoon tea each have their place in fond childhood memories. These dishes have always formed a part of families eating together and using locally sourced ingredients. Everpopular dishes such as fish and chips are a must-have treat on day trips, never losing sight of the hearty, simple, homemade spirit of their origins, even when adapted for modern trends in

28

gastro pubs and restaurants. A return to traditional, fresh local fare and the tried, trusted and ever-delicious recipes of the past have naturally accompanied the resurgence of home cooking in recent years. These eight additions to the Flavours of England cookbook series are a celebration of that history and the perfect introduction to the best that the country has to offer today. Kippers have been part of Northumberland breakfasts for over 100 years. Featured in the English Breakfast book, a part of English cuisine since the early 1300s, they make an ideally healthy and filling alternative to the full English breakfast classic full English of bacon and sausages from a

local butcher with your choice of accompaniments, both timehonoured ways to start the day off right. Doddington cheese is made on the Maxwell’s farm in the Glendale Valley, Northumberland, where, following traditional cheesemaking techniques, the family produce a cheese similar to cheddar with a firm texture and a nutty taste. Doddington cheese is recommended for the summer vegetable and cheese crumble in the Cheese cookbook. Singing hinnies are a Geordie classic. Named for the noise they make cooking on the griddle, these scone-like bakes are a perfect sweet treat or afternoon snack, found in the Baking book,

served warm, split and spread generously with butter. If in need of some light refreshment in the afternoon, Afternoon Tea, popular since the nineteenth century, is the ideal combination of finger sandwiches with various delicious fillings along with essential scones with jam and cream and other delicate sweet treats, with step-bystep instructions on brewing the perfect cup of tea and a description of popular blends by Gilli. For a filling and versatile option on the go or to enjoy as part of a sit-down meal later in the day, look no further than Pies and Pasties or Suppers and Snacks for some sensational regional snacks

and lighter meals to savor. Afterwards, and as an ideal end to any of the aforementioned meals, the selection in Puddings has a sweet option to suite any palette. Finally, the coupling of festivities and food is a perfect one, and England has a variety of days throughout the year at which to come together and share a traditional dish. From pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and distinctive hot cross buns

on Good Friday to a classic Christmas pudding, be prepared to mark each celebration with a delicious English accompaniment with Festive. Flavours of England cookbooks are compact 150 x 150mm, 48-page hardbacks, priced at £6.99 each. Available from www.graffeg.com and all good bookshops.

ENJOY YOUR CONSERVATORY ALL YEAR ROUND If you’re fed up with your conservatory being either freezing cold or blistering hot, then Thermos Roof have the answer

C

onservatories have become synonymous with the traditional English home. The first ever Conservatory in the UK was constructed in 1825 and to date there are now approximately 4 million. It is estimated that they can add up to 5% to the value of your property, which makes it a significant asset to your home. Conservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know that, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for 2 months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. Thermosroof have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, the first to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory, and during the summer it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermosroof they can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a Computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that they can do this all in one day! With no mess! They retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it form the inside, finishing

30

it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials they use are lightweight therefore no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess & upheaval in your home. in addition to this the look and finish of your Thermosroof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now. The performance of their lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. They can install a Thermosroof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits the Thermosroof team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce

rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and they guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. The team offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermosroof and should you require it we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Please give them a call today and ask for Steve to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory! Call 01670828695 www.thermosroof.co.uk

Theatre School Offers Scholarship Opportunity Razzamataz Theatre School continues to support talented youngsters with hundreds of pounds worth of training

42

Despite the closure of schools across the UK, a Dragons’ Den backed theatre school wanted to continue offering incredible opportunities to young people with a passion for the performing arts. Razzamataz Newcastle is part of a network that has been working with children for the last twenty years and has offered in excess of one million pounds in scholarships and grants to help children participate in the theatre arts. Even during this lockdown period, Razzamataz Newcastle are digging deep to give children with the drive and determination to make it in the world of performing arts, a chance to achieve their dreams by attending professional performing arts training. children and young people to attend the school free of charge for one year, worth up to £700. The scholarship audition process has been taken completely online to adhere to social distancing measures. The deadline for entries is 19th June 2020, so there is still time to get involved. “We were the first part-time theatre school to work with The Stage newspaper to offer these scholarships and we have seen the amazing results across the UK,” says Kayleigh Redford, principal of Razzamataz Newcastle. “Now, more than ever, we want to continue to be there for our families and young people in our communities and give them something to look forward to. The pandemic has taken away such a lot for children and teenagers so we were determined to keep this exciting partnership for them.” When schools closed, Razzamataz laid out a very thorough plan to keep offering performing arts training online. Not only has the school been able to continue to support families with regular classes, there have also been a host of special guest workshops and interviews. Over the last few weeks, Razzamataz students have been able to participate in interviews with West End stars Kerry Ellis (Wicked) and Jennifer Tierney (Come From Away) as well as join in commercial classes with Lizzie Gough (Strictly Come Dancing). There have also been special interviews on social media so students can learn more about the industry with Felicity French (casting agent with Cameron Mackintosh) and actress Danielle Fiamanya (&Juliet). To ensure as many youngsters as possible can enter The Stage scholarships, Razzamataz has created a system that is easily accessible to all. The competition is open to current and non Razzamataz students aged 6-18. Videos do not need to be professionally filmed and can be emailed, sent via dropbox or uploaded via wetransfer.com to the child’s local Principal. They will simply need to create a short demo of no more than two minutes long showing them

“Razzamataz Newcastle has joined forces with The Stage newspaper to offer scholarships to children and young people to attend the school free of charge for one year. “ performing either a musical theatre song and dance, commercial dance (hip hop or street), pop song, drama improvisation or scripted drama piece. Applicants will also complete a short application form detailing why they would like to take this opportunity. Many former Razzamataz students have gone on to work professionally in West End shows including Hamilton, &Juliet, Matilda, School of Rock and many TV shows as well as a major film franchise. Past winners include Leah Marshall (2019) who has been offered a place to study performing arts at Newcastle college and Jessica Emms (2016) who has performed in short movies and recently played the lead ‘Elle Woods’ at Tyne Theatre and Opera House in an excerpt of hit musical ‘Legally Blonde.’ Jessica and Leahs’ story echoes what many past scholarship winners say as Kayleigh explains: “Many of our past scholarship winners have told us that winning gave them a boost of confidence and the belief that they could achieve if they set their mind to it. Offering children these life opportunities are part of the Razzamataz ethos and makes us all proud to be part of the network. Even during these very challenging times, we wanted to send out a very clear message to our students and their families that we are there for them, supporting and encouraging them to never give up on their dreams.”

To enter the scholarship or find out more about the online classes contact Kayleigh Redford by emailing newcastle@razzamataz.co.uk, calling or texting 07772577855 or visiting www.razzamataz.co.uk/what-we-do/the-stagescholarship/stage-scholarship-application-form/ 43

Looking after residents & employees alike

Eothen Homes are of the firm belief that if they look after their staff then, in turn, the staff will provide the best quality care for the residents at each of their homes.

E

othen Homes is a Christian organisation focused on providing a very personalised and flexible care since 1950. Residents’ needs are of the utmost importance to them, with the team striving to provide the very best lifestyle based on each person’s abilities, interests and background. As well as providing exceptional care for their residents, the needs of their employees are also vitally important to Eothen Homes. They look to recruit the best possible staff members and, by being part of the Real Living Wage Scheme, they let all potential new recruits know that they are as passionate about their workforce as they are about their residents. Eothen Homes are of the firm belief that if they look after their staff then, in turn, the staff will provide the best quality care for the residents at each of their homes. The Real Living Wage is set by an independent organisation which bases its hourly rate on the actual cost of living – in the North East this is currently £9.30 per hour. As a registered charity, committing to the real living wage was a significant business decision for the company, but one they were keen to make so they could invest in their staff and give them the financial reward they deserve. Care workers are often portrayed as low skilled, which determines the pay across the sector. 44

Eothen Homes can’t change this as it is set by the government. But they can ensure they show how much they value their staff’s skills and commitment by paying them this real living wage. Due to an ageing population, residents come to Eothen later in life or stay with them for longer, and their health often deteriorates physically and mentally. This means their staff have to be fully trained and competent to deal with individual needs right through to end of life, and this brings with it a series of physical and emotional challenges. The amazing staff tackle these challenges head-on, and show an incredible amount of passion for their job. They care for their residents like they were their own family. Their work deserves to be rewarded with a decent rate of pay. Being a Real Living Wage employer has given them a platform to stand out in the health & social care sector, and has helped us them attract and retain a wonderful workforce, making Eothen Homes an employer of choice. If you are interested in finding our more about a career with Eothen Homes, use any of the contact details below. Tel: 0191 2390041 recruitment@eothenhomes.org.uk www.eothenhomes.org.uk

GARDEN VIEW

Gardening from scraps! By Rachael Leverton

I

t’s a difficult time right now and lots of gardeners are taking solace in their plot. But we’re seeing a whole new group of people coming to gardening by an unusual route. With more people quarantined at home right now, trips out to garden centres falling under ‘unnecessary journeys’, and empty shelves at the supermarket, people are wondering if there’s anything they can grow easily at home with limited specialist supplies. The answer is yes, and it’s possible with minimal equipment to set up some home-grown produce on a windowsill or balcony. It’s something fun to with the kids too. You don’t need flowerpots; yogurt pots and ice-cream tubs will do. For something deeper chop the tops of 2 litre milk cartons. Be as creative as you like – just punch a couple of drainage holes in the bases. Garlic – If you can spare a couple of cloves of garlic you can plant them and grow your own garlic bulbs! Put the pots of planted garlic in full sun. They will sprout and send up a stalk. Chop this off and the bulb will then put all of its energy into growing large bulbs.

Potatoes - Cut about one-inch of a chunk from a potato that includes 1-2 eyes. Let it dry out for a day or two then plant with the eyes facing upwards. Pumpkins and squashes – these grow fairly easily from seeds found in the centre of the gourd. Scallions / Spring onions - Cut off the last couple of centimetres of each onion leaving the bulb and roots. Plant in a pot, leaving a portion of each stem sticking out above the soil. Water regularly, and the onions will start growing. Harvest the green portion of the plant, and it will continue to regrow more greens. You can do this 2-3 times before needing to plant more bulbs. Carrots – Carrot tops can be placed in shallow water in a saucer and will sprout tasty greens. You can use these to make a carrot-top green pesto. You can also regrow the plant by cutting a couple of centimetres from the top of a carrot. Stick a toothpick into either side of the carrot stump and balance it on top of a small glass. Fill the glass with water so that the liquid barely touches the bottom edge of the stump. Set this glass on a windowsill out of direct sunlight. Add water as it evaporates, and roots will sprout from the carrot edge. Plant it out in a pot. Romaine – This lettuce has narrow leaves that form a tall head. Cut off a couple of centimetres from the bottom of the romaine stalk, place it in water and after a week or so roots will form. When they are slightly longer than the leaves growing from the top you and plant it out. To harvest, pick the outer leaves leaving the inner leaves. It should keep producing for months. Happy scrappy gardening!
