HOW TO GET YOUR SUMMER FEET During the winter the skin on our feet can become dry and cracked. Giving them some attention now can get them sandal ready.

If the skin is very thick you can make an appointment and we will remove it. Using a good emollient cream rehydrates the skin. A hard skin file on the heels once a fortnight will smooth the skin. The nails need attention too. If they are thick we can reduce them. If they are damaged we can make a false nail using Wilde Pedique. The nails can then be painted, they will look better. Here at Howlett and Dickinson we hope you have a great summer with more freedom than we have had of late.

Welcome to The Modern Yoga A YOGA STUDIO IN THE HEART OF GOSFORTH

A SAFE PLACE TO PRACTICE Due to the COVID-19 pandemic every effort has been made to make the studio a safe place to practice, giving students a real peace of mind. When in the studio, yogis can expect strict sanitation and deep cleaning, improved air quality, and ventilation through an air cleaning equipment. There will be longer times between classes to allow for studio cleaning and safe social distancing between yogi’s. The in-studio class sizes have also been reduced, giving students more space on their mats. Student safety and wellbeing is our number one priority.

The studio was created with the twin aims of offering a sanctuary from the pressures of everyday life whilst also connecting the community of Gosforth. Over the past year its been difficult to offer that sanctuary, but we have continued to run online classes, which has meant the Gosforth community of Yoga fans have been able to stay together and practice. Hopefully, with fingers and toes crossed, the studio will re-open its doors May 17th, roll out its mats, and be able to offer that much needed sanctuary once again. The studio, located on the high street, occupies the 1st floor of the renovated Former Fire Station. A building restored to its former glory and featuring several independent small businesses. Modern Yogis’ are a big fan of popping in for a class and then picking up a tasty treat from Pink Lane Bakery, our neighbour downstairs. There are several teachers at the studio, which means we’re able to draw upon 8

a wide range of expertise and knowledge. The timetable provides a variety of classes, courses and workshops to suit all levels of practice, and aims to bring all ages and abilities together. We offer vinyasa flow, Ashtanga, Yin, Restorative, beginners, pregnancy and yoga for post natal mums, with babes invited along. Whilst we’re very much looking forward to getting back into the studio, we appreciate that some people might not be ready for that just yet, so we will continue to offer our popular online classes. As well as in-studio classes. we also plan on offering a number of yoga in the park throughout the Summer.

A YOGA COMMUNITY We’ve always wanted to add to the yoga community in Gosforth. In these difficult times people need Yoga more than ever, and it’s so gratifying to be able to teach and share our practice. What’s also lovely is the fantastic feedback we get from our students. “Thank you so much to all your team for bringing yoga into our homes. It's been a real lifesaver for me over lockdown, and something I always look forward to. I have only done classes through Zoom, but I already feel very included in the Modern Yoga Community”. To book a studio, park Yoga or online class visit www. themodernyoga.co.uk or you can email themodernyoga@gmail.com with any queries. If you haven’t practiced with us before, we have a number of offers for you to enjoy. These include £30 for 30 days of Yoga, 4 studio classes for £25 or 4 online classes for £15. We can’t wait to welcome you onto the mat. ■ The Modern Yoga, 234-236 High Street, The Former Fire Station, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 1HH www.themodernyoga.co.uk

OFFSETTING “BRAIN DRAIN” DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS WITH THE ARTS Embracing the ARTS during school breaks to boost emotional well-being and prevent academic backslide By Jennifer Diaz, Director, Turpentyne Ltd

Lockdown number three has come and gone… Our children have been at school off and on for a full year and have lost an uncalculatable amount of academic progress. It has been observed that when children experience less regular academic stimulation during an extended absence from school, their knowledge retention can be adversely affected. Experts often refer to this phenomenon as an academic backslide, yet many of us in the teaching profession refer to it colloquially as “brain drain”. As both an educator and a parent, I am of the mind to do everything in my power to ensure that my children succeed despite this lost school year. However, I am also concerned about the potential to create further stress and emotional distress for my children who have weathered the past 14 months with extraordinary patience and smiling faces. It is so very tempting to allow our children to spend their school breaks camped out in front of their game console or television… They certainly have earned a chance to relax. But a summer of screens does them little good. After a year of disruption, our children can ill afford 6 weeks of the dreaded summer “brain drain”. This is why it is so important that we supply our children with engaging activities that help them to grow their minds whilst having fun. Studies have shown that an effective organic way to enrich our children’s academic performance is through

the arts. Painting, drawing, sculpting, music, drama, and dance, all create opportunities for our children to think creatively and critically. Additionally, the arts help our children to develop a growth mindset where they can develop skills like resilience, tenacity, and the ability to find motivation intrinsically as they master their craft. Participation in the arts is a complex and multifaceted endeavour that combines many subject matters (like mathematics, history, language, and science) while being uniquely tied to culture. The arts are the perfect link between ALL subject matters, and an excellent delivery system for academic concepts. Brilliant examples are the correlation between drawing and geometry, or the link between playing a musical instrument and having a practical understanding of sound waves and the science of acoustics. For my family, this summer more than ever before, we are making involvement in the arts an absolute priority to enrich our children’s academic and emotional wellbeing. Albert Einstein is attributed to have said "creativity is intelligence having fun". Not being one to argue with genius… I say, let us encourage our kids to express theirs! ■ www.turpentyne.com

The new menu features brunch and lunch favourites (if you haven't tried their vegetable fritters, or chicken club then you've been missing out!), and now you can tuck in to loaded fries, sharing boards, dirty burgers, delicious chicken shawarma and succulent steak salad; the perfect accompaniment for an evening out or a preshow treat. As always, GCT is sure to be a hit with families. Not only are they bringing their fantastic kids menu back but, for a limited time, they will be offering FREE selected kids meals when you buy brunch or a main if you visit during the week. In addition to a new kitchen and new menu are new, longer opening hours, meaning that Gosforth Civic Theatre is now open on evenings until 10pm Thursday to Saturday and 10am until 3pm on Sundays on top of their Monday to Saturday daytime hours. After the postponement of last years event, the Mouth of the Tyne Festival is back this summer, and Keane and Lighthouse Family are the first artists officially confirmed for this year’s event. The Lighthouse Family was formed in Newcastle in the early 90s by Tunde Baiyewu and Paul

Sophisticated Handmade Art-Jewellery EMINE THOMPSON CONSTRUCTS UNMISTAKABLE PIECES WITH A CONTEMPORARY TWIST

S

ituated in Ouseburn, the artistic engine-room of Newcastle, Silverkupe offers unique handmade jewellery for discerning clients. After more than 20 years of teaching landscape architecture and 3D modelling, Emine started her jewellery journey in 2017 and never looked back. Originally from Istanbul, she lives in Whitley Bay and creates her contemporary jewellery from the BBox Studios in Newcastle. Since the beginning of her creative journey Emine has always been fascinated by colour, texture and form. She uses a combination of techniques in her creations, such as traditional silversmithing, metalclay, and sculptural and enamelling techniques. She seeks to bring together the individual characteristics of different materials and techniques to construct unmistakable pieces. Colour plays an important role in her designs also. Emine achieves deep blacks by selective oxidisation, intense blues and reds by vitreous enamels, and adds indulgence to her designs with 24k gold-accents. Her pieces get hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office. Emine’s expressive jewellery offers a contemporary twist on more traditional ideas. Due to handmade process, every single piece is one-of-a- kind. Currently she has four collections within her portfolio, Colour Seeds, Dotty, Simplicity and Half & Half that reflects her unique design. You can find her art-jewellery in fourteen galleries and gift shops across the UK and on her website. Up

Emine’s modern silver art-jewellery, with its pop of colour and gold, might be just the thing you are looking for.

until recently, she also exhibited her designs in many UK locations such as London, York, Newcastle, Durham, Saltaire, Glasgow and, of course, Whitley Bay. Speaking about life as a designer-maker and her business values, Emine said: ‘Jewellery and precious metals play an important role in traditional Turkish culture. Just have a look at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul! This culture is embedded in me. I am also fascinated by how silver, and indeed gold, can be endlessly recycled, and how every bit of discarded metal can eventually be turned into a beautiful piece. I use eco-friendly jewellery presentation boxes and my postage material is all recycled’. Emine has been living in the UK since 1999 and the name ‘Silverkupe’ encapsulates her background and her future. ‘Küpe’ means an earring in Turkish. As a child and a teenager, Emine always liked silver jewellery and especially earrings. So she combined two words from the two different cultures to which she belongs to

create her brand name. Emine loves teaching and enjoys seeing people developing and finding out what they are cable of doing. She gives jewellery-making workshops at her studio. These are currently one-to-one only. Workshops from her range are proving to be popular gifts. You can select from six different workshops, ranging from introductory silverclay to more advanced silversmithing techniques. She is planning further options for her workshop portfolio to spread the joy of making even more! Emine’s modern silver artjewellery, with its pop of colour and gold, might be just the thing you are looking for. You can select a statement piece or everyday jewellery to accompany your individual style. Emine also accepts bespoke commissions and designs the pieces according to her client’s needs, desires and visions. And if you cannot decide what to choose for a loved one, she offers personalized gift cards as well.

Emine will be at John Lewis Newcastle with her pop-up shop from Monday 7th June for a week. Why not give her a visit to find out more. ■ Silverkupe Jewellery & Workshops, BBox Studios, Studio 30, Stoddart Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1AN www.silverkupe.com contact@silverkupe.com 21 21

It’s Getting Brighter

Did you know that ultraviolet (UV) radiation is always around us? Whilst it actually benefits us by producing vitamin D, it can be harmful over prolonged exposure. We tend to associate danger with the sun, but the intensity of ultraviolet light can be high even on a cloudy day. You wouldn’t hesitate to use sun screen for a warmer climate, but what about protection for your eyes against harmful UV rays? At Concept Eye Clinic, we are passionate about the award winning innovation that comes with Zeiss to ensure that full UVProtect technology is inscribed for every clear lens. This means you are fully protected whatever your prescription and whatever the weather. UV PROTECTION EVEN ON CLOUDY DAYS Shade does not provide complete protection from ultraviolet light. Fifty percent of UV radiation still gets through from reflected and scattered light. This effect is amplified when swimming in the sea, for example, as the water's surface reflects part of the ultraviolet light. Our recommendation is therefore to protect your eyes and skin from the sun in every situation, whether in bright light or cloudy weather. This means that not only spectacle wearers but everyone should ensure that their eyes are safeguarded. We can do this either by wearing high-quality sunglasses with full UV protection or clear or tinted glasses with full UV protection to enjoy bright sunshine and outdoor activities safely and confidently. AT CONCEPT, ALL CLEAR AND TINTED EYEGLASS LENSES AND SUNGLASS LENSES FROM ZEISS ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE UV FILTER, SO THERE’S NO NEED TO ORDER IT SEPARATELY. In these challenging times, investment in our wellbeing has never been more important, but looking good doesn’t have to break the bank. Our eye care programmes provide incredible benefits with choice on luxury frames, sunglasses and Zeiss technology lenses for the spectacle wearer. Each programme offers an innovative interest-free

24

payment scheme to help you enjoy advanced diagnostic eye care, beautiful eye wear and premier lenses as often as you like. Now that’s pretty handy for most of us needing a spare pair of glasses for work and play! Spectacles are more than a vision aid. They are a personal statement and, more than ever, they are an important emotional investment. At Concept we recognise this. So, once you have chosen your Tom Ford or RayBan, we will make sure you have the right ZEISS Lenses with full protection. From the quiet confidence of Lindberg to the Hawaiian shores of Maui Jim, or the glamour of DITA with clever craftsmanship and design detail, there’s something special here for everyone. Your eyes matter to us. Empower them with not just style, but the latest lens technology protection. Your eyes deserve it. ■ Concept Eye Clinic, 157 - 159 High Street, Gosforth, NE3 1HB | concepteyeclinic.com

2021 interior trends As the weather warms up and we look to switch to our Summer wardrobes, it’s time to consider our Summer interiors too. There are quick and easy ways of adapting your space for a brighter feel and to positively welcome in the rest of the year. Below is a closer look at three of the top interior trends to consider this summer.

EARTH TONES The Dulux Colour of the Year 2021 is Brave Ground, and it encapsulates the gentle, calming atmosphere we all want to create in our homes right now. Warm and natural, this shade has set in motion a trend for all things earthy and natural. It pairs wonderfully with mellow sage green or deeper, inkier blue tones. Earth colours ground us and allow us to feel the peace and quiet we need in the most tumultuous of times. Combine Brave Ground with the earthy colours for a warm and welcoming feel. Subtle and smart, these Induge in Japandi at muscaristore.com tones work well with midcentury furniture and rich finishes, such as copper, marble and velvet. Opting for warm earthy shades in the bedroom too can create the perfect place for absolute relaxation and calm. JAPANDI No one would expect the cultures of Japan and Scandinavia to combine quite so easily as they do but it’s a fact and the result is the elegance and cutting-edge style that’s 26

become known as Japandi. Pared back and minimalist, Japandi celebrates natural fabrics and fibres as well as the simplest of geometric shapes. Japandi also celebrates stone and earthenware and is often combined with another of the past year’s big trends – houseplants. Elegant grasses and single stem flowers are simply styled and the colour palette remains simple, with greys and whites at the heart of Japandi interiors. A few earthenware pots and elegant green houseplants can give your space a Japandi look, whilst muted and natural palette cushions and throws can create that grounded earthy feel. COTTAGECORE The cottagecore aesthetic is inspired by a romantic interpretation of rural life. People who enjoy cottagecore are interested in the idea of a more simple life and time, as well as being in harmony with nature. As an interior design style, it’s a mix Try the simple life with Cottagecore of traditional, classic, farmhouse, and eclectic design elements—all pulled together with a granny-chic influence. Cottagecore was a term that first turned up on Tumblr in 2018 but in 2021 when we’re all craving comfiness and the escape that comes with country living, it’s back with a vengeance. Traditionally patterned or sumptuous velvet sofas and chairs are paired with long curtains hung on wooden poles, creating a gentle country charm and effortless cosiness, something which we’re all yearning for in a time of such uncertainty.

Booking a staycation? TRY CRAWFORD HOUSE With 2021 being labelled the year for staycations in the UK, we have the perfect cosy getaway, Crawford House in Morpeth, Northumberland. Crawford House is a two bedroom holiday home situated alongside the River Wansbeck. We are Lisa and Mark and we started up Crawford House in the autumn of 2019, after moving out of the home due to our little family expanding. At the time we decided to keep the house on as a holiday home instead of selling, to see if we enjoyed the experience of being holiday home owners. Fast forward 18 months and, despite the pandemic, we still love the joys Crawford House brings us. We have spoken to, and met some lovely guests over that time, and have had the pleasure of sharing our home with them. We strive to ensure our guests have a 5 star experience when they come to stay with us, and the testimonials on our website demonstrate how our guests feel about their stay with us. Morpeth is a great location to base yourself if you are wishing to explore what the rest of Northumberland has to offer you. Crawford House is perfect for those who want a good mix of urban and rural experiences on their holiday. Morpeth has some great shops, restaurants, and bars to enjoy.

Crawford House is a 10 minute walk from Morpeth town centre, the train station and bus station. Although we have two bedrooms, we have the option to facilitate up to 6 guests, as we have a sofa bed available in the living space. The bedrooms feature a double bed in the main bedroom with two single beds in the twin room. You will find a smart TV with Netflix and Disney plus subscriptions included as standard for all our guests to enjoy. All linen, towels etc. are provided for our guests at no extra cost. We also have a travel cot and highchair for use by your little ones. Crawford House is a dog friendly property, as we love to have your canine fiends as our guests too, at no extra charge. The garden is fully secured so you have confidence in knowing the dogs are safe when you let them out to explore our outdoor space. Morpeth and Northumberland have some great places to go with your dog, including a few pubs and cafés in the town of Morpeth itself. We have all been apart from our family and friends for just over a year now and, there is light at the end of the tunnel that we will meet again. When that time comes, and it is safe to do so, think about Crawford House as a place for family and friends to stay if they do not live local to the area. Our prices start from a £80 per night to book out the whole property and we operate a loyalty scheme where all returning guests get 10% of their next stay as a thank you for choosing us. You can find us on Instagram and Facebook, @crawfordhousene. We do exclusive discounts for our followers on social media and run regular giveaways, including free stays and vouchers. Look us up if you want to be in with the chance to win a free night. ■ For more information, visit www.crawfordhouse.co.uk

Since then they have expanded their portfolio to Oakfield Grove, Blyth, an intimate development of four bungalows. WHY MAKE A WILL? BY JACQUELINE EMMERSON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMMERSONS SOLICITORS

I

have been writing about Wills, Probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney for so long that I realised recently that I had not considered the absolute basics of Will Writing for quite some time. I know why you should make a will and so do our award winning team at Emmersons. But the most important thing is to let you know, or to remind you, as to why you should make a will. The most obvious reason is to make sure that the person who you would like to benefit from your estate does just that. A very sad case cropped up recently. Two men had lived together as a couple for about twenty years. They were not married and neither of them had got round to making a will. One of them died suddenly and within days, as often happens in these situations, the family of the deceased turned up to the house, which was in the deceased’s name only, and advised that they wanted the house as part of the estate. As there was no will the next of kin are the family and not the long term partner of the deceased. So now he has to deal with the death of his partner and potential homelessness. Is this what you would want for your partner? Or what about a couple who start living together who have both been married before and have children from their previous marriages. I have seen numerous cases where the house is in one name only, even if both have contributed a lump sum. Let’s consider William and Meghan, I might as well stir it up a bit! William had already sorted out his divorce when he met Meghan. He had bought himself a three bedroomed property. About a year after the two met Meghan moved in with William. Some time later Meghan received her own divorce settlement and as the couple were talking about getting married she put a large lump sum into the house. A friend told her to make sure that her name was on the deeds to the house. When Meghan rang her solicitor to attend to this she was told it would cost about £250.00. She didn’t want to spend that amount money and neither did William. Three years later William died. He had not left a will. So everything was to go to his children, and they said that as the house was in their father’s name they should inherit it as well. Could Meghan please find herself somewhere else to live. If William and Meghan had made wills then they could have determined which of their assets were to

38

JACQUELINE EMMERSON

go to each other and which to their children. At the very least Meghan had to fight to recover her share of the property, and judges are not always kind on this point. How could she prove that this wasn’t just a gift to William, or that part of it wasn’t a loan she had repaid to William. That £250.00 would have been money well spent. Her court case would cost in the region of £10,000 to try to recover anything from William’s estate. If Meghan could also prove that she had a financial dependency upon William then she also make a claim for Provision For Dependants. Again she would be at the mercy of a judge. Not only was Meghan stressed about all of this but so were William’s children. They hated Meghan and couldn’t see why their father would even have considered leaving her anything instead of leaving everything to them. All of this angst and cost because William did not make a will. You could also decide to leave part of your estate to someone who has been a good friend. If your next of kin happens to be your cousin who lives in Winchester how long it since you last saw him or her? Twenty years perhaps. If you don’t make a will they are going to inherit your estate, all of it. If you want your friend or friends to receive items that are important to you then you should say so in your will. A good friend of mine didn’t have a will. She didn’t want to leave her estate to her sister because once her sister died everything would end up with her sister’s husband’s family. I advised her that without a will that was exactly where her money would go. She said she would think about it. She died two weeks later without a will. The sister’s in-laws were actually quite nice people but between them they couldn’t come up with anything to say by way of a eulogy. My friend’s sister wasn’t at the funeral as she was too ill. Of course she died a few months later and so, as predicted, the family members who my friend disliked intensely inherited her estate. I could provide you with dozens of examples from my cases over the years of the “wrong” people inheriting. But I assume you get the picture. Please think about your family carefully and don’t leave in the situations as described in this article. Extra stress, family disputes and expensive court proceedings are not a very pleasant legacy. ■ If you require any help then please don’t hesitate to contact me on 0191 2846989 or je@emmersons-solicitors.co.uk

welcome aboard!

INTRODUCING UNITED GROUP TRAVEL LTD Right now we all need something to look forward to, and a UK coach break could be just the ticket! Local coach tourism experts Graham Wright and John Hindhaugh have started their own coach tour company and are taking bookings now. Graham explains more... John and I have worked in the coach tourism industry as drivers for many years, the last few spent as tour drivers for the same local North East coach holiday company, until the Global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on our industry, with many companies going out of business. Over the years, on our numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, we have built up a fantastic relationship with many of our passengers, and are lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated our experience and knowledge of the places we visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of our friends that the question was asked about starting our own company doing our own holidays, so here we are. We have put all our years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning our exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and we only select the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to us, or we have previously used before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on our knowledge as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always enjoyed. The trips do not leave the hotel too early, or return too late, so as to allow everyone to make full use of the facilities of the chosen hotel. Guaranteed free time as well as entertainment are also key factors that we take into account to try and make a tour as pleasurable an experience possible. In such a short space of time, from the initial concept, we have managed to make massive progress. During this current difficult time we all need something to

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

PERSONAL WELFARE This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. PROPERTY AND AFFAIRS

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

It’s time to dine alfresco What’s new & trending in outdoor cooking for 2021, according to the experts at Dobbies

One of the best things about the warmer season has to be making the most of longer days and sunshine in the garden by dining alfresco. Helping to furnish your garden to its fullest, Dobbies has something for every style of outdoor space. From the latest high-tech barbecues for outdoor cooking enthusiasts, to smaller more compact portable models that can be taken on beach trips and camping weekends – you’ll be spoilt for choice. Outdoor Living Buyer at Dobbies, Lynsey Abbott, said: “Everyone should be able to enjoy the benefits of cooking outdoors, it’s such a staple of the spring and summer seasons. Quickly transforming your garden into a space for entertaining, from BBQs, pizza ovens, multifunctional firepits and chimineas – we have something for everyone. This year’s range features eco-friendly alternatives, bluetooth integrated controlled fans and wood-fired pellet grills to name a few. When warmer weather allows, it’s time to give the oven a break and rediscover the joy of cooking up delicious flame grilled food in yor outdoor space.” Lynsey’s top 5 tips for BBQ beginners when it comes to choosing the right one for you… •

• •

• •

Decide what fuel source is going to work best for you. Gas and electric have the advantage of being very easy to light and to control temperature, whilst charcoal and cooking on fire can take some getting used to but is definitely worth the time investment. How often will you be using the BBQ? If you plan on using it regularly, you should consider investing more. What size do you need, which is usually determined by how many people you will likely to be cooking for and, of course, how much storage space you have. If you don’t have a garden shed or garage to store it in the colder months, you’ll need to think about a protective cover. Get a thermometer - some models will have one built in, but it’s still handy to make sure temperatures are right to start cooking on. Be creative on the grill! As much as you can’t beat a classic burger, there is so much more that can be cooked outdoors, from halloumi to whole joints and delicious grilled desserts. Just because you’re a beginner doesn’t mean you need to feel restricted, there is plenty of inspiration to be found on Instagram and Pinterest.

WHEN NOT TO DIY Some DIY jobs are better left to the professionals

You may have no other choice than to call in the professionals to ensure some tricky household jobs are done safely, properly and legally. We tell you what you shouldn’t attempt yourself. Many homeowners are discovering advantages to buying homes that are in various stages of completion. Instead of hiring professionals to complete the house, some amateur DIY-ers are discovering basic homebuilding skills. As long as the work meets standard building codes, a homeowner can often see substantial savings over the same work performed by licensed professionals. But not every task is suitable for a competent but fledgling DIY-er. Due to the specialised skills required to do the job, you may have no other choice but to call in the professionals to make sure the job is done safely, properly and legally. Here are a few situations where you will most likely need to call in the professionals for a home repair job. ELECTRICAL WIRING OF ANY KIND Never attempt electrical work yourself as the consequences of a mistake can be incredibly serious. Rewiring a room, fitting new lighting fixtures, and fitting fuse boards should all be undertaken by a qualified electrician to meet the extremely high standards required by law. According to the law, most electrical work in homes will need to be carried out by an electrician who is registered under a government approved scheme, such as the National Inspection for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC). The alternative for those doing DIY electrics, is for electrical work to be checked by local authority building control at a cost of around £120. Despite this tough new law over 70 per cent of householders questioned still felt confident to tackle DIY electrical tasks. If you are one of the majority, you are breaking the law and may come across problems when you come to sell your property. SUPPORTING BRICKWORK Professionals should do any brickwork that is not merely decorative. At first glance, brickwork may appear to be one of the easiest construction jobs around. But, as any professional bricklayer will tell you, the job can be overloaded with dangers.

46

Professionals have the proper tools and techniques to prevent collapse due to improper alignment. If the job involves load-bearing structures, installation procedures must be followed to the letter, which usually means leaving the project in the hands of experienced workers. INACCESSIBLE PLUMBING JOBS Many DIY-ers discover that simple plumbing repairs are completely within their scope of ability. Replacing a leaky toilet for example, is an involved process but not overly complicated. Pipes for drains and sinks are standard sizes and will come off with traditional wrenches without much effort. Many drainage problems can be solved with relative ease. But this may lead to a false sense of security. Flooding and excessive water damage can be two of many problems associated with improper plumbing repairs. Much like electricity, you can’t always be sure that all the connections are closed before you begin a major repair. Professionals should handle any plumbing job that involves a broken pipe that you can’t see or reach. They have several methods of finding hidden breaks in pipes and know how to repair them with little collateral damage. GAS LINES ARE STRICTLY FOR THE PROS There are no exceptions. Again, installations not fitted by a registered professional are illegal and potentially extremely dangerous. Never consider fitting or repairing a boiler or gas fire yourself and always ensure that you use a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. ROOFING REPAIR Any repairs to the structure of the roof should be left to those who can accurately measure the proper angles needed for load bearing. You can undertake any routine repair work but professional roofers should handle anything involving the actual frame of the roof.

Enjoy your conservatory all year round If you’re fed up with your conservatory being either freezing cold or blistering hot. Here, Thermos Roof explain how they have the answer Conservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, firstly to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory and, during the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round, because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight, therefore no roof strengthening is 50

required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now. The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by

reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and we guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and, should you require it, we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Please give us a call today on 01670 828 695 to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory! ■ www.thermosroof.co.uk

COULD A GERMAN SPEAKING COUNTRY BE YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY DESTINATION? BY SUSANNE WARDLE, DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF THE GERMAN TEACHER With the days getting longer, the temperatures rising and the lock down easing, we tentatively start to think about holidays! So, could Germany or a German speaking country be your next holiday destination? Travelling from North Shields on the ferry to Ijmuiden near Amsterdam might be a preferred option this year – if you like to avoid airports. Once in Holland, Germany’s coastline along the Baltic is about 4-5 hours away. THE NORTH Especially the former east around Warnemünde and the Mecklenburger Seenplatte (a vast area of lakes) are very beautiful during the summer – a stunning area of unspoiled nature not dissimilar to our Lake District. Also, in the North you find the Hanseatic towns of Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck and Rostock – all on a maritime theme and with a long history of trade and shipping. HEADING SOUTH Heading South past Hanover, Göttingen, Kassel and Cologne and then along the banks of the river Mosel and Rhine, you will encounter huge vineyards, fairy tale castles and Roman history around the city of Trier. If you enjoy riding a bike, the cycle paths along the river are perfect and the views are breath taking. THE SOUTH: SWABIA, BAVARIA, AUSTRIA, SWITZERLAND, LIECHTENSTEIN Stuttgart with its famous Swabian food, the Mercedes Benz and Porsche Museum, the Ritter Sport factory where you can make your own chocolate, are great for holidays with children. Bavarian beer, food, folk music and its mountains are famous all over the world. Of course, there is also Austria with its gorgeous capital of Vienna and Mozart’s Salzburg. Switzerland provides a variety of different holiday experiences – whether you want to be active (climbing, walking, mountain biking and, of course, skiing in the winter) or you prefer boat trips and lovely strolls along Lake Geneva, Lake Lugano or Lake Lucerne. And then there is, of course, Liechtenstein, a stunningly beautiful and interesting German-speaking microstate situated in the Alps and in the southwest of Central Europe. 54

WHAT ABOUT THE LANGUAGE BARRIER? People in Germany and German speaking countries start learning English at the age of 7 which means that by the time they leave school, most of them have a good command of the English language, so most people will understand you! However, any holiday is so much more exciting if you manage to speak some words or sentences in the local language. Any person in any country appreciates the effort somebody makes to speak their language – it builds bridges and does not have to be grammatically correct. SPEAKING GERMAN German and English have many cognates (words which are the same) or near – cognates (words which are very similar). Here are a few phrases to get you started in German: Hallo – hello Guten Tag – Hello (any time of the day) Guten Morgen – Good morning Guten Abend – Good evening Mein Name ist… – My name is… Wo ist …? - Where is…? Wo ist das Hotel? – Where is the hotel? Wo ist der Supermarkt? – Where is the supermarket? Wo ist die Bäckerei? – Where is the bakery? Auf Wiedersehen – Goodbye In brief, consider German speaking countries as a holiday option. They have lots to offer, are not too far away and starting to learn the language is easier than you think! ■ www.germanteacher.uk

Summer Gardening Guide

The warmth of the summer sunshine makes it the ideal time to enjoy your garden. Officially starting on Monday 21 June, the long-awaited season of longer lighter days is when many gardens look their best, filled with colour and fragrance. Whether you planted young seedlings in spring and can now enjoy seeing your efforts burst into bloom, or you’re looking for fast floral additions, the experts at Dobbies have shared their top tips to get gardens looking their best. Dobbies Horticultural Director, Marcus Eyles, said: “Summer is a busy time in the garden, with plenty to do but equally lots to enjoy as nature puts on its best sensory display of the year. As temperatures rise, it’s a time of exuberant growth, with potential dry spells meaning a little extra TLC needed to give your garden a healthy boost.”

EARLY SUMMER GARDENING ACTION PLAN… Planting out Once bedding plants raised from seed or young plants have been hardened off in a cold frame over a period of 7 to 10 days, they can now be planted out. More tropical feature plants such as Canna and ornamental bananas can also be planted. You should remain vigilant of any late frosts or cold snaps and protect plants accordingly. In colder areas of the country, it may be wise to wait until early to mid-June. Smart watering Watering is key during peak summer months when your garden is less likely to get what it needs naturally from rainwater. Early morning is the optimal time to water plants, avoiding the hottest part of the day when this will quickly evaporate and allowing a chance for plant roots to take in what they need. Late afternoon or early evening is okay for watering, so that the plants have time to drink up the water before the heat of the following day but avoid watering too late at night as this can lead to fungus growth. Make sure water is directed at the base of plants, rather than 58

over the top, to ensure the water gets to where it is needed. Water newly planted shrubs and perennials in dry periods, mulching well to help retain moisture. Adding liquid fertiliser, as per the manufacturer’s instructions, every fortnight to feed plants grown in containers and hanging baskets will help for healthy growth. Light work of weeding Warmer temperatures will herald the appearance of weeds in flower beds and borders. The quickest and easiest way to control them is to hoe them off before they get established, applying a thick layer of mulch over the soil surface to help keep any further weeds at bay. Mulching with organic matter, such as garden compost, also locks in moisture and, over time, helps to improve your soil, whilst giving plants a well-needed boost. Practical pruning Regularly dead-heading flower borders will extend the flowering season well into autumn, particularly for Dahlias, Roses and cottage garden Perennials. Any early flowering herbaceous plants that have already died back can be cut back and tidied, whilst some will grow back with a second flush of foliage and flower for a late season display, such as Geraniums and Delphiniums. Spring flowering annuals, such as Forget-me-nots, will have faded now and should be lifted to make way for later summer plantings. Fill gaps with fast growing high summer bedding plants such as Dahlia, Cosmos and Nicotiana. Prune Wisteria cutting whippy side shoots back to around five leaves to 20cm in length. Prune spring flowering shrubs, such as Deutzia and Weigela soon after flowering has faded to prevent them becoming overgrown. Remove spent branches with secateurs or loppers to allow new growth to develop as this will carry next Spring’s display. Dead-head Roses to encourage repeat flowering. Feed them with Rose fertiliser and add a layer of mulch for an extra boost to support strong growth and a floriferous display. Roses are at their peak in June, making it the perfect time to choose new varieties to add to your summer display. We have a vast range of our new own brand roses now in store. Show lawns some love Lawns are put under extra pressure during high summer months, but established lawns that dry out and have brown patches will recover with some TLC and when rain returns. Regular mowing is best for a healthy lawn, reducing the cutting height to help prevent drying out and when the grass is growing more strongly. Keeping the blades slightly higher will also help the grass resist the extra summer wear from garden games and stay at home picnics. For a lovely, lush green lawn, apply a high nitrogen summer feed. Why not leave some areas of grass to grow to allow wildflowers to flourish, supporting wildlife and pollinating insects. Quick fix colour – Summer bedding plants You can’t beat summer bedding plants for a colour burst and fast results. There are so many varieties to choose from, you can have beautiful flowers from late spring through till autumn. Whether you’ve got a large garden to co-ordinate, or just need a few pots to add colour to your balcony or windowsill, there are endless ways to use bedding plants, making them one of the most popular additions to any summer garden. ■ www.dobbies.com

A Good Read

By Willow Coby

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING

BRIDGERTON

When a young man is found dead on the North Carolina coast the local police – and local residents – start looking for the culprit. It doesn’t take long before they turn their attention to Kya, also known as the Marsh Girl. But is she guilty of anything more than being an outsider? What follows is actually two stories intertwined. As the hunt for the murderer continues we learn of Kya’s life in the marsh. At the age of 6 she watched Ma walk away from their shack with a blue case and high heeled shoes. Though Kya waited, her mother never returned and over the following months her siblings left as well, leaving her alone with Pa. He was often drunk or absent, so it was up to Kya to survive, until he finally left when she was 10. To some extent, this is a coming-of-age story. It is an unforgettable novel; a celebration of nature and some of the most engaging parts are the descriptions of the marsh world through which Kya glides effortlessly in her canoe. It becomes a character in its own right. There is no denying that this novel will stay with you long after you finish it and feel as if you have been along the journey though the marsh with Kya.

Ah, the Regency Era. The world of Jane Austen, elegant women dressed in the sumptuous fashions or the era, and dashing young men, all navigating a world of parties and courtship. Julia Quinn drops us into this intriguing world in her bestselling novel Bridgerton: The Duke & I, the first in the series. Most people will know it through its highly successful adaptation on Netflix, but the original source material is well worth reading. We are introduced to the Bridgerton family with their 8 children (all named alphabetically). Mrs Bridgerton is eager to find a husband for her eldest daughter, Daphne, and it would appear that all of British high society – known as the ton – is lapping up the latest gossip. At one of many balls she attends, Daphne meets the rather irascible Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings. The two form an unlikely friendship and, since neither of them is interested in marriage, they agree to a fake courtship, in the hope of avoiding advances from prospective husbands and wives. But can it really work? And are they really so averse to marriage? One of the charms of this novel is that you are reminded that no matter what era we are born into, we are all basically navigating the same pitfalls in life. Enjoy the ride!

A GOOD DAY FOR CLIMBING TREES by Jaco Jacobs Don’t let anyone tell you that you are too young to take a stand. Sometimes all it takes is one simple, spur of the moment decision, to change your life forever. Marnus was fed up. No one seemed to notice him. His older brother acts as if he is in charge, and his younger brother seems to know everything. But a single knock on the door, a petition, and a tree under threat, will ensure that everyone notices him. This charming novel from one of South Africa’s most popular and prolific children’s authors will hook you in straightaway. It will make you laugh and will make you think about grabbing the opportunities that life gives you. 62

THE BIG UGLY MONSTER AND THE LITTLE STONE RABBIT by Chris Wormell Sometimes we all feel lonely. Sometimes all we want is a friend. The Big Ugly Monster is no different. This wonderful picture book tells the story of a monster who is so ugly that no one will go near him. Lakes, rivers, and puddles hiss and dry up when he steps in them. Animals and birds run away from him. Flowers drop their petals and trees lose their leaves. But one day he decides to make his own friend out of stone, and he carves a little stone rabbit. We learn that he is only ugly on the outside and that he is a faithful, loving friend. A moving story that will stay with you long after the final page.
