THE HASTINGS

FESTIVE FEAST Christmas is a time for family and friends to indulge in delicious food and winter tipples. With this in mind, here are sevenw of the best local venues to help you celebrate the festive season in style.

The Hastings is a community pub steeped in tradition. Built over 175 years ago, it was purpose built as a public house, and has served that function ever since. Current owners Peter and Paul Thompson have run the pub for the last 4 years, and the Hastings has gone from strength to strength during this time. They have been nominated for, and won, a number of awards, both local and national, and they have an excellent reputation for both their food and their choice of real ales. They pride themselves on using fresh and where possible locally sourced ingredients throughout their dishes. A good honest local pub, serving good honest local food is how they describe themselves, although this may be selling themselves a little bit short, as their food elevates the Hastings to more than the usual local pub. With a good selection of wines and malt whiskies, alongside branded ‘house’ spirits and an extensive premium spirit range, they believe there is a satisfying drink for everyone. SEASONAL ADVENTURES If you fancy a trip away to get you in the mood for Christmas, here are a selection of some of the best Christmas Markets across the UK.

WINCHESTER

20 November –22 December

Set in the Inner Close of the city's great Norman cathedral, with an ice rink at its heart, this market is a charmingly festive spectacle - no wonder people come from all corners of Britain to shop here. The wooden stalls sell a great selection of presents, including decorations, jewellery, paintings and prints, bags, hats and children's toys. And, just beyond the Close, there is more excellent shopping in The Square and Parchment street. If the usual Christmas market fare of mulled 12

wine, bratwurst, mince pies and stollen isn't to your taste, Rick Stein and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have restaurants in the city too (rickstein.com andrivercottage.net), or wander down the sideroads and alleys of the compact city centre to find attractive cafes and teashops. And to remind yourself of the spiritual side of Christmas, slip into the cathedral to hear the cherubic choristers sing choral evensong. www.christmasmarkets.com/UK/ winchester-christmas-market.html CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

You'll need to get your skates on if you want to visit Lincoln's market, as it's held over just four days this year, opening at noon on Thursday December 7. Lincoln brought the first traditional German Christmas market to the UK in 1982 as part of its twinning with the German town of Neustadt. Originally there were just 11 stalls in Castle Square, which have now multiplied to more than 280, selling a wide range of craft and food products and set around the city's lovely cathedral and castle. A funfair and big wheel will be installed for the weekend, live bands will provide entertainment and there will be a traditional carol service in Lincoln Cathedral on the evening of December 10. www.visitlincoln. com/whats-on/lincoln-christmasmarket-2017

HEALTH

THIS LITTLE PIGGY WENT TO... Robert Stringer and Stephen Hannant of Bay Podiatry in Whitley Bay explain the importance of caring for children’s feet

M

aintaining and caring for a child’s feet will benefit their health, mobility and well-being throughout their entire lives. The human foot is a highly complex structure, composed of 26 bones working together to allow the foot to adapt to uneven walking surfaces, and acting as a shock absorber with each step. In the newborn, the foot is composed mainly of relatively soft and flexible cartilage which gradually converts to bone with age. These bones are usually fully hardened by the age of 18. During this period of development, the foot can be at risk from injury and deformity due to ill-fitting clothing and footwear, therefore, great care should be taken with shoe types and shoe fitting. At the age of 8 the bones in the foot are still not fully formed. However, feet will start to grow less quickly (good news for parents) but still by approximately a whole size per year. The arch is also properly developed, which means your child’s footprint will now start to look much more like your own. Even now when your child’s foot looks more like an adult’s, it’s still almost as vulnerable as it’s ever been. The new heel-to-toe walking style means the shape of the foot changes inside the shoe with every step, so having shoes that are the correct shape and fitting is as vital as ever.

BABY’S FIRST SHOES

The age at which a child begins to walk unaided varies greatly. On average, it is 12 months for a girl and 15 months for a boy. Ideally, a child should not require shoes until they are walking competently outdoors. Children should be barefoot, in a safe environment, as often as possible to promote natural and normal foot development When choosing your child’s first shoes the first thing to look for is a trained fitter. Then make sure the shoes have these features: • Close cropped soles to prevent tripping • Room for movement and growth • Soft, breathable uppers for cool comfortable feet • Lightweight, flexible sole to aid walking development • Whole and half sizes and a choice of widths • Fully adjustable fastenings • Padded ankle for protection and support 16

TOP TIPS

• Always have your child’s feet measured for length and width. • Check the size of their socks, sleepsuits, babygrows and tights (don’t forget that these items can shrink in the wash – especially if tumble dried). • Inspect their shoes regularly for unusual wear and seek professional advice if you are concerned. Unusual wear may be the first indication that there is a problem with the foot posture and should always be investigated by your registered podiatrist. Normally, wear is across the back of the heel or between the back and the outside. You should look out for severe wear on the inside or outside of the heel which may carry forward to the sole of the shoe. • If possible, do not put your child in the same shoes every day. Alternate shoes to allow them to dry out, particularly if the foot is sweaty. • Avoid the use of plimsolls in school all day every day. If a change of footwear is required in school, a fitted pair of lacing/velcro trainers is best. • Inspect children’s feet regularly for inflamed skin around the nails, red pressure marks on the top of the small joints of the toes, below the ankle bones and at the back of the heel. • Older children can be secretive about foot problems and a trivial, easily rectified problem can become more serious if neglected. • If they complain of itchy or painful areas or you see any rashes or hard, raised areas on the skin, seek professional advice immediately. • Wash their feet daily with simple soap and water and dry well, particularly between the toes. • Children have naturally sweaty feet, but smelly feet may be an indication of poor hygiene. • The toenails should be inspected regularly and trimmed as required. Never cut down the side of nails or cut them too short. When cutting, follow the line of the nail at the tip of the toe and always leave the corner of nail just clear of the fleshy part of the toe.

LOCAL MUSIC ENTHUSIAST IS ALL SET TO CLEAN UP IN WHITLEY BAY, NORTH SHIELDS

AND SURROUNDING AREAS Paul Edwardson is launching his own Oven Cleaning Business as part of the Oven Wizards Franchise. Paul has lived and worked in the local area all of his life, so, as he knows the area really well, he believes there will be a strong demand for his services. Paul says “I was looking for a business idea that would be something I would enjoy doing and that would provide a great service to local people. I came across the idea of an oven cleaning business and then started to research the market. I soon realised that becoming an Oven Wizard offered me a great opportunity, particularly with the support of a successful National Franchise Brand. Mark Abbott, owner of the Oven Wizards business said “From the first time we met Paul, we knew he would make a great success of running an Oven Wizards Franchise, particularly because of his great passion for friendly customer service.” Mark went on to explain “There is a growing demand from people who want to have their ovens professionally cleaned because it is probably the hardest and most hated job in most households “. Oven Wizards have provided Paul with comprehensive

training which will enable him to professionally clean all sorts of makes and models of ovens. As well as Whitley Bay and North Shields Paul also covers Wallsend, Tynemouth and all towns and villages across North Tyneside. A recent Survey carried out indicates that oven cleaning is one of the most hated chores in the home. Taking into account the fact that there are over 26 million households in the UK and that nearly each one has at least one oven and a hob, the growing domestic cleaning market therefore provides unlimited opportunities to delight our customers. the restaurant proudly sits on the extensive corner plot, boasting 85 covers and giving a modern feel with exposed bricks, booth style seating and a relaxed urban décor. They cater for all tastes, with a menu full of variety and mouthwatering choices. My wife and I popped in on a weekday afternoon, and we both found the restaurant to be bright and airy with a really good buzz about it. We sat in one of the booths and took in the atmosphere, generated from a good mix of couples and families. For my starter, I ordered the breadless scotch egg wrapped in bacon with rocket and house relish, a dish I have never experienced before, but it was really tasty and one I will certainly be having again. My wife opted for the crispy crab cake with pea puree and pea shoots, flavour combinations that work really well (I can vouch for that as my fork did stray over to her plate on more than one occasion!). For our main courses neither of us could take our eyes off the specials board, there were lots of mouth-watering options to choose from. I picked the 8oz rib eye steak served with house chips, asparagus, black pudding and poached

Breadless Scotch egg wrapped in bacon

egg, whilst my wife decided on the toad in the hole with Cumberland ring, mash, roasties and onion gravy. Both dishes were generous portions, fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. The steak was exactly as requested (medium rare), and the slightly runny poached egg was a real treat and brought the dish together well. My wife commented that the mash was incredibly moreish (and she is a mash aficionado!) and the onion gravy was divine. All of the dishes were a triumph, and we left feeling very satisfied and with no room for dessert! Evans Bistro aims to be as inclusive as possible, they have Vegan options on their menu (more available on request), are fully accessible and have installed a changing bed that can hold up to 20 stone in their disabled bathroom. They also have a dedicated play area to keep the young ones entertained while you relax and enjoy the food (although the kids menu is also packed with fresh hearty options). Having spoken to the joint owners, their passion for the business is clear to see. They have taken a lot of time to source the best wines, lagers and ales and stock from a local brewery. I had the organic lager with my main course, which I can highly recommend. Evans Bistro definitely brings something new to Whitley Bay. The quality of their food, the ever evolving menu choices, and their portion sizes, combined with their passion for good service makes it a very welcome addition to the town. We certainly won’t be strangers! Evan’s Bistro, 201 Whitley Road, Whitley Bay, NE26 2SY. Tel: 0191 252 6532 www.evansrestaurants.com

UNIQUE: Kim can create amazing cakes for any occasion

SIMPLY AMAZING With few specialist cake shops in the area, and following the success of her home cake making business, Kim Barrass took the plunge earlier this year and opened her first cake shop, Simply Kimberley’s, on North Seaton Road in Ashington.

K

im started the business 4 years ago working from home, initially baking a few cakes for friends and family, purely because she got enjoyment out of experimenting with different cake designs.

As her reputation for innovative, eye catching cakes grew, so did her customer base, and she quickly built up a Facebook following due to the quality and uniqueness of her products. Kim is keen to stress she is very much self-taught, she is not a qualified cake maker or decorator, just a talented baker, passionate about cake making, who’s undoubted talent has meant she has been able to forge a career doing what she loves. As the business expanded, as well as running out of space at home, Kim also had to travel further and further to get her increasingly diverse range of supplies. Due to her increasing popularity and the lack of supplies in the local area, Kim decided the time was right to move out of her home kitchen and in to open her very own cake shop. So, in March of this year that is exactly what she did, along with her partner and fellow cake enthusiast Rob Dale, and Simply Kimberley’s opened its doors on North Seaton Road in Ashington. Simply Kimberley’s is a haven for cake lovers. It is home to the largest range of cake decorations and supplies in the area, the choice is extensive and, if for some reason you cannot find the items in stock, she can order them in for you.

28

As for the cakes themselves, this is where Kim really comes in to her own. The choice is vast, and she can create almost anything for almost any occasion. Her speciality is 3D sculpted cakes, which she can do in a huge array of themes. She also does edible images on icing or rice paper for cakes or cupcakes if you prefer to make your own cake, meaning you still get a bespoke cake but have the satisfaction of making part of it yourself. A big advantage of Simply Kimberley’s being local and having their own shop is that you can come in and chat one to one with Kim or Rob to discuss your exact requirements. They will talk you through every step of the design to ensure you get the perfect cake to mark your special occasion.

SOMETHING SPECIAL: The shop also has a great range of giftware, many from local crafters

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE SUPPLIES: The shop is home to the largest range of cake decorations and supplies in the area

Simply Kimberley’s also run a range of themed workshops, aimed at children from 3 upwards. The workshops are fun packed and let your children’s creative juices run wild. The workshops start by each child being given their own apron, which they can decorate themselves (and keep adding to the design at each class). The workshops are all themed, and the children have a selection of cupcake designs to copy and create their own. The classes are approximately 2 hours in length, and are split into age appropriate groups, they also cater for special needs. After numerous requests they will soon be running a number of adult classes, starting with Christmas themed ones coming next month, after all why should the kids have all the fun! As with all the classes, keep an eye on Simply Kimberley’s Facebook page or call the shop for updates on times and dates. The shop is also home to a selection of giftware, many from local crafters. FREE UP YOUR TIME WITH BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL How many hours do you spend cleaning and tidying your home each week?

I

n 2016, a survey by the Office for National Statistics found that women do 26 hours of unpaid work, with men putting in 16 hours.

Just think what you could be doing with that time instead – going for a walk, learning to ski, finally reading that bestseller that’s been on the bookshelf for months or just catching up with friends over a coffee. Helen Ross, who runs the award winning Bright & Beautiful domestic housekeeping service in North Tyneside, looks after homes across the area, delivering the highest standards of cleaning, tidying and laundry and taking care of those jobs that eat into your free time. In the UK, we have some of the longest working hours in Europe and that, combined with running a busy home, means that many of us will end the week exhausted, overwhelmed and resentful after trying to juggle chores, work and family. Helen says: “As modern men and women we still tend to think we can and should be doing it all. Well, the truth is we can, but if we do, we’ll very probably be exhausted and fed up! 30

“More people than you might imagine now have a cleaner – not because they have huge houses or armies of staff. Rather it’s because they want to make the very most of their free time and would rather not spend it mopping floors or scrubbing the sink!” Just carving out a bit of me time each week and leaving some of those never-ending responsibilities to us can help you to feel more relaxed, productive, energised and happy and will leave your home clean, tidy and smelling amazing. And did you know that a professional cleaning service like Bright & Beautiful could add value and protect your home too? GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 34

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. INTERVIEW

REPRESENTING: Katherine with 4.15 alumni Sarah Rayson who plays Floss Guppy in The Dumping Ground

GETTING TO KNOW KATHERINE MONACO Gosforth based performance arts company, Famous 4.15 have been working with children and young adults to develop their performance skills since 2001. Teaching singing, dance and drama, in a fun and friendly environment, they encourage freedom of expression, whilst keeping things fresh and making learning fun. We chatted to Katherine Monaco, Principal at Famous 4.15, to find out more about her inspiration behind setting up the company and some of the exciting projects ahead. Can you remember the first time you performed in front of an audience? How old were you and what was the show? Yes, I do! I was 5, performing a tap number of ‘Walking in a Winter Wonder Land’. I was as graceful as an elephant at that age! I nailed the whole number until the very last step, then boom, I shuffle-ball-slipped centre stage and landed on my bootie, my ridiculous frilly dress around my head and matching knickers on show to the whole audience. Tap and ballet really weren’t my forte. Growing up did you favour one discipline over the rest? I was a dancer. Dance was definitely my thing! That ‘hallelujah’ moment when I found my commercial feet and realised, dancing wasn’t all about being a ballerina! Touring the world with Sirens allowed us the creative freedom to choreograph most of our own tours, as well as work with some world famous choreographers and there was nothing more appealing to me than being locked in a dance studio for days rehearsing. Singing came after dancing– when I formed the band Sirens with my buddy Karina. I’m a Hip Hop girl at heart and bands like TLC & The Beastie Boys inspired us to jump in to the music business headfirst. Young, fearless and completely naïve! 36

What made you want to set up a performing arts school? I love working with young people and when I was young I didn’t have the opportunities to explore modern, relevant Performing Arts. ‘Stage’ schools were too expensive, very traditional and far too strict for my free spirited young self! After my experiences in the pop world I decided a PA hub that had a more current approach was sorely needed. We work with the kind of material and young, vibrant team of teachers that embraces that. My young self would have loved Famous 4.15! Your music career with Sirens has taken you all over the world - you must have had lots of adventures, what are your favourite memories? LOTS! Meeting Kanye West in Tokyo, meeting Pudsey Bear in Carlisle and hearing our Number #1 American Dance Hit everyday whilst driving the school run with my fam in Houston! Being produced by Ryan Tedder (One Republic), shooting Sirens Club LA LA video in L.A with RayKay (Lady GaGa’s director) and hearing our record played on BBC Radio 1 for the first time with my home girls! I could write a book, but there’s a taster! CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

Have you met lots of celebrities? Was there anyone you particularly liked? Apart from our lovable fellow Geordies, Ant & Dec; last year I had the pleasure of being invited to New York University as a guest of the legendary movie producer Spike Lee, for a screening and post show analysis of his Michael Jackson ‘Off the Wall’ documentary. The panel consisted of the head of Motown Records, DJ Spinner, the genius Quest Love and Spike Lee himself. This was truly an education, in all things Michael, film, acting, music, LIFE! Walking through the streets of NYC with Spike Lee, is undoubtedly one of the most surreal and brilliant experiences I have ever had! Do you have a favourite all time singer or group? Michael Jackson. Do you have a favourite musical? Hamilton! I saw it during the opening run on Broadway, NYC and it blew my mind! You must be very proud of your students, some who will have been with you from the age of 3 right through to 18. It must be hard to see them leave? I’m so proud, I need a new word for proud! They’ve gained places at some pretty prestigious establishments from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, Trinity Laban, Italia Conti to name but a few! It’s heart breaking to see them leave and heart warming to see how they’ve been touched so positively by their time with us. We have grown up together, shared experiences together and built memories together. An eclectic mix of very special young people who see Famous as a family. I can’t get rid of them though, they’re like elastic bands, they go away for a while but come back at any given opportunity armed with updates and *gossip! *Our awesome Beth just popped in, fresh from dancing with Little Mix at the Brit Awards, she had all the low-down! Who is the most famous person in your phone book? Floss Guppy of CBBC’s The Dumping Ground! Floss is played by our lovable Sarah Rayson, a long-standing 415er who I have the pleasure of representing as an agent. Famous represents several young actors that I’ve placed in TV shows, short films, music videos.

AN EDUCATION: Katherine with movie producer Spike Lee

The end of year show at Famous 415 is always a brilliant occasion involving the whole company including the tinies! There must have been lots of memorable moments? It’s a pretty exciting time when everyone takes the stage! The anticipation, nervous energy and extreme excitement are a melting pot for many memorable moments. Some take the stage for the first time; some for the umpteenth time but each has their moment and their memory. The whole creative process is inclusive, we build the shows around pop culture and each show is original. It builds confidence, friendships, teaches the importance of encouragement and support and makes the kids feel proud to be part of something special. The kids and team are united. Yes, they work hard and yes, it’s a logistical challenge having 100 plus children aged 3-18 years in the same production but it’s so worth it! You clearly like a challenge! The resounding success of the Hit the North urban music festival in 2017 involving over 80 acts from around the world on one night in 12 venues was phenomenal. What are the plans for next year? It was brilliantly received so next year we plan more of the same: lots of diverse acts in lots of diverse venues in our fantastic city but we plan to add an even greater cross genre range of artists (more Hip-Hop for me!). Primarily, new music and breaking artists with cool headliners. We’ll also definitely be preceding Hit The North with Meet The North again- a showcase for great new music from the region, which we hope will inspire and encourage young Northern artists. You work with many young aspiring musicians, actors and dancers. What’s the best piece of advice you can give them? Be yourself. Believe in yourself. Enjoy yourself! The Famous ethos is simple: everyone can have his or her chance to shine, whether that means fifteen minutes spent singing into a hairbrush or a major role on stage or screen. We offer training that is relevant, exciting and inclusive but most of all we inspire self-belief, confidence and encourage everyone to be proud of who they are. If a child lacks in self-belief, they need not worry, we will have enough belief in them until they do!

PROUD: Katherine's students grow up together, share experiences together and build memories together 38

THE JOY OF

SINGING

T

yneside A Cappella is a choir of women who enjoy singing popular songs in four part close harmony in the a cappella style (without accompaniment – just voices). The aim is to sing to the best of our ability and have a great deal of fun along the way. Musical Director Peter Jones is a very experienced director and vocal coach, who gets the best out of the choir with a mixture of hard work and fun which has resulted in a wonderful sound and high standard of singing from the 47 members. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at West Moor Community Association on Benton Lane, from 7.30 – 10.00 p.m. The Centre has a large, free car park and is on a main bus route. The choir is a mix of singers with some previous experience and those who have never sung before, and who come from a wide background and age group – teachers, students, housewives, health service, local government, retail, business, hospitality, retired – who are brought together as friends to enjoy singing and also several social events organised through the year outside of rehearsals. The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. Many of the girls say how much better they feel at the end of the rehearsal, even when its been a tough day or life isn’t at its best, the joy of singing, the support of good friends and the magical experience of a group of people coming together and performing as one lifts the spirits. There is a song for everyone - Queen, Nat King Cole, Michael Buble; some Irving Berlin and some Beatles. Members pay £10 per month, and for that they receive music, teaching aids (teach track CDs/MP3s),

Looking for a new hobby? Can you sing in tune, and are willing to learn? Read on! performance outfits, excellent rehearsal facilities and support to learn how to sing to the best of their ability. None of the musical leadership receives any payment for their services – the choir is a team dedicated to musical enjoyment for all. New members are encouraged to learn at their own speed and become part of the performance ensemble when they and the Musical Director feel they are ready. There are no formal auditions, singers need to be able to sing in tune, hold their line, and be willing to learn.

The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. The choir performs regularly throughout the year at a variety of venues including Newcastle Civic Centre, Seaton Delaval Hall, various local churches, Beamish Museum and The King’s Hall at Newcastle University. The choir are singing on 30 November at Newcastle Civic Centre for the civic party at the arrival of the Christmas tree from the people of Bergen, 9 December in the Masonic Hall at Beamish Museum, 16 December at St Hilda’s Church, Preston Grange as guests of Backworth Male Voice Choir and they have their own Christmas show at the Little Theatre Gateshead on 18 December. lantsplus Garden Centre, a former retail nursery on the outskirts of Newcastle, just off the A1 near Ponteland, is now a branch of Berwick and Dunbar Garden Centres. They officially joined the group in November 2016, and the first set of major infrastructure tasks have now been completed; including extensive site drainage, the installation of an environmentally friendly biomass heating system, and re-roofing of the retail area. Berwick Garden Centre first opened in 1983, initially as a small nursery established by a local farmer, Nick Crabbie employing just two part-time employees. Over the years it has expanded and diversified to include a restaurant, a farm shop, a pets and aquatics range as well as gifts and homeware.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE There's an extensive range of bedding plants, shrubs and perennials on offer at the centre

This business was founded on providing quality, home grown plants to discerning gardeners Struggling to expand on the land any further, Dunbar Garden Centre was built and opened in 2013. Now in its 4th year, Dunbar Garden Centre has already obtained a 4-star Visit Scotland award and Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. The Taste Our Best Award (also from Visit Scotland) was accredited through endeavouring to source local produce wherever possible to produce freshly cooked food and baked goods in store. Nick Crabbie, managing director of the group told us: “This latest addition squares the circle for the future of our business. Plantsplus will continue to operate as a nursery and will supply plants to both Berwick and Dunbar garden centres. We also want to develop the retail side of Plantsplus with a strong emphasis on the promotion of home grown plants”. Currently under construction are improvements to car parking and disabled access, the provision of extended indoor and outdoor plant viewing areas, provision for yearround shopping, as well as a new coffee shop.

“These are exciting times,” said Crabbie, “We are in the process of creating a unique offering in the North East. This business was founded on providing quality, home grown plants to discerning gardeners. We will build on that tradition and will readily allow customers to witness the full horticultural experience.” Known for bursting at the seams with colour in the Spring and Summer months with expertly planted hanging-baskets, patio planters and bedding plants, the garden centre will now be open all year round, seven days a week (excluding Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day). The centre has introduced a new Reward Card where customers can earn and redeem points and exclusive offers across all three garden centres. Customers already enjoy visits between our Dunbar and Berwick stores, and with beautiful countryside and local visitor attractions in the surrounding Ponteland and Seaton Burn area, we don’t doubt there will be many of our current customers coming to experience

Plantsplus for the first time. There is also a display site from ‘Escape to my Garden’ (www. escapetomygarden.com), offering bespoke sheds, summer houses and log cabins. As the nights start to roll in and the evenings get darker, the centre will be hosting its first year of festive products for its customers. Beginning in October, the garden centre will be filling up with artificial trees, lights and Christmas decorations. Christmas wreaths and poinsettia will be arriving at the end of November. The centre will be fully open, seven days a week, during this exciting period of development with their knowledgeable, friendly staff always available to answer any questions you may have, so why not pop in and take a look? IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEAD,

WHEN ALL AROUND ARE LOSING THEIRS... Irene Anderson, founder of The Happiness Company, gives her advice on how to stay calm and in control when the going gets tough...

R

udyard Kipling wrote those words in his poem IF. It seems very pertinent at the moment. The world seems to be in chaos. Our news features tell us of natural disasters, hurricanes and earthquakes. We have wars raging and politicians posturing.

Is it possible to keep our heads when all around are losing theirs? How can we stay calm and avoid a knee jerk reaction of fear, anxiety and helplessness when things seem to be out of our control? Of course this doesn’t just apply to world events but also to our everyday life. How do we deal with difficult situations that seem to be out of our control i.e. an awkward work colleague, a difficult family relationship, illness?

THE SCIENCE BIT The first thing that happens when we face situations like these is our lizard brain (the bit that is meant to warn us of danger and get us ready for fight or flight) goes into overdrive flooding our body with stress hormones. Useful if we have to run from a Sabre Toothed Tiger but not helpful when faced with modern dilemmas because when we are in panic fight or flight mode, our heart rate goes up, breathing becomes shallow and we can`t think straight. WHAT CAN WE DO? • Firstly, calm the Lizard brain. Concentrate on your breathing. Take long, slow, deep breaths. Count in 1234, out 1234. Do this at least 3 times. • Focus on all the things in your life for which you are grateful. Even things like the bed you sleep in, your morning tea or coffee, Be aware of all the things that are GOOD in your life. • Send out goodwill. Be specific start with people you 48

love then those who a neutral to you then those you don’t like or who are difficult. (I send loving kindness to...) • Visualise in your mind’s eye the difficult situations or people being better. Imagine things sorting themselves out. See yourself being able to deal with everything that comes to you during the day. • Use a mantra ‘Everything is working out well, I am strong and capable of dealing with all situations that come my way, all is well.’ Like everything this gets easier with practice. If you feel yourself slipping back into panic mode, take a break and re focus on the steps above.

SECONDLY, TAKE SOME ACTION • Whilst some things may be out of your control, there are many things that you can control. Taking action, even if it has nothing to do with the situation, immediately shifts you from helpless victim to powerful mode. • Think of what action you can take. Could you make healthier food choices, move your body more, learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, get to bed at a decent time, wake up a little earlier and spend 5 minutes breathing deeply and focussing on seeing the day ahead working out well for you. • Every little change you make has a ripple effect. As YOU change, the situations around you change. Don’t believe me? TOP TIPS TO GET YOUR HOME LOOKING BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL FOR CHRISTMAS By Helen Ross who runs the award winning Bright & Beautiful domestic housekeeping service in North Tyneside

W

ith Christmas just around the corner, the thought of getting your home ready for the festivities and overnight guests can be overwhelming, especially when you are already thinking about what present to buy for Aunty Mabel and what food to serve to your brother’s vegan girlfriend. One of the many things that my housekeeping team hears from our clients is how wonderful they feel coming home to their clean, tidy and beautiful smelling homes. So, to help you to stay relaxed and to create a warm and welcoming environment for all your family and friends this festive season, I’ve created a cleaning countdown to Christmas for you to follow.

3.

4.

MID DECEMBER 1.

2.

Walk through your home with a visitor’s eye to identify all the things that need cleaning, smartening up or fixing: make a list of any of these jobs. Declutter. This is especially important if you have children as a tide of new toys and presents will be coming your way on Christmas morning. It’s probably a good time to go through their current toys and donate some to charity. The same can also be said for other rooms throughout the house.

A WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS 1.

2.

Tackle the bigger jobs first, especially those that are unlikely to need to be done again before Christmas Day such as cleaning the windows, washing the skirting boards, washing and ironing bed linen for guest rooms, vacuuming the sofa, washing out the fridge to make way for party food etc. Deep clean the bathroom; including the tops of cabinets and inside of cabinets, you’ll be

surprised how many guests will take a nosey! Deep clean the kitchen, doing the jobs you don’t tend to do on a daily basis such as washing cupboard fronts, fronts of appliances, inside the microwave and the bin. Sort out the coat cupboard and store away items that are not worn very often in order to make way for guests coats.

CHRISTMAS EVE 1.

2.

Time to do the jobs in the areas that you hope won’t get too messy before the big day such as vacuuming and mopping floors, plumping up sofa cushions, giving the bathroom a quick once over and polishing mirrors. Hang fresh hand towels and put out new hand soap in the toilets.

CHRISTMAS DAY 1. 2. 3. 4.

Empty the bins and put in fresh bin bags. Spot check bathrooms, kitchen and floors for marks Plump up the sofa cushions (again!) Carry a laundry basket around your home and pick up clutter and either put the things back where they should be or just hide the basket!

Finally, as guests arrive, pour yourself a glass of bucks fizz, enjoy the day with family and friends and make sure someone else takes care of the washing up!
