LUXE IN THE CITY Late summer is the perfect time to enjoy a city break in the UK.

W

ith many people opting for foreign climes, or heading to the British coast, the city can be less crowded than normal, leaning to a more relaxing break. Another advantage to taking a city break in the summer is the price. There are some great bargains to be had, especially on luxury hotels, so this could be a great time to indulge yourself at one of the UK’s finest city hotels, at a price that is right for you. With this in mind, here is a selection of luxury hotels in popular UK cities, all of which have great deals over the late summer.

6

THE BALMORAL HOTEL, EDINBURGH

The Balmoral is located next to Edinburgh’s main Waverley railway station, at the eastern end of Princes Street, and a short walk from the National Gallery and shopping areas. Built as a railway hotel, it has accommodated film stars, royalty and prime minsters. In 1997 it was bought by Sir Rocco Forte as the first hotel in the Rocco Forte Collection and completely refurbished by his sister, the designer Olga Polizzi. Original features include ornate plasterwork in the reception, an elegant well staircase and the dome-ceilinged Palm Court tearoom and bar in the centre of the hotel.

TRAVEL DRAKES HOTEL, BRIGHTON: Free standing baths and fabulous sea views are featured in several of the rooms

DRAKES HOTEL, BRIGHTON

Only 10 minutes’ walk to the Royal Pavilion and The Lanes, and Brighton Pier; the beach and Brighton Wheel are diagonally opposite the hotel. This hotel oozes style and while remaining sympathetic to its Georgian footprint, there are attractive Poirot touches to the rooms: elegantly curved ocean-liner styled walls and rippled stucco, blond-wood panelling and fabulous on-trend bed throws. Drakes has 20 rooms and even the smallest come superbly styled with curved walls, blondwood panelling, chic armchairs and comfortable queen size V-spring beds. drakesofbrighton.com

Only the glossy, black-and-gold railings give a clue that something a little-less-ordinary might lie behind the smart, Georgian, brick exterior - The Town House, Durham

GRAY'S COURT, YORK

Flanked by York Minster to one side and a delightful acre of mature garden on the other, Gray’s Court enjoys one of the finest locations you’ll find anywhere. There is a palpable sense of history in the wood-paneled long gallery where Kings have dined and in the grand formal rooms; other features include a collection of rare Gyles painted glass, leaded windows, thick wooden doors and limestone fireplaces. Expect quality carpets and wallpapers and period furniture in the bedrooms - as well as Clarins toiletries in the modern en-suite bathrooms.

HOTEL DU VIN AT ONE DEVONSHIRE GARDENS, GLASGOW Located on a tree-lined avenue a few minutes walk from the Botanic Gardens. An inviting warren of corridors and wooden staircases with superb stained glass windows leading to opulent rooms and suites. The impression is of a grand country house in the highlands with quality furniture and discreet lighting,

THE TOWN HOUSE, DURHAM

On one of the city's older streets, lined with a handsome mix of 18th- and 19th-century houses, only the glossy, black-and-gold railings give a clue that something a little-less-ordinary might lie behind the smart, Georgian, brick exterior. Dark and rich in golds, amethysts and reds, and thick with velvet, glittering chandeliers and gilt-framed mirrors, it cries out ‘French boudoir’. The small restaurant, heavy with tassled velvet chairs, leopard-print carpet and fauxplasterwork and frescoed ceiling, serves a modern British menu that’s hearty rather than fancy. www.townhousedurham.co.uk

TRAVEL - CONTINUED

exuding an air of studied calm and comfort. There are 49 spacious rooms and suites in nine categories, every one individually designed and decorated in deep, rich tones with original Victorian features and luxurious modern fittings. www.hotelduvin.com/locations/glasgow/

THE BATH PRIORY, BATH

Located in an upmarket residential area in western Bath, the late-Georgian, Bath stone mansion, and sweeping lawns, giant cedar trees and heated outdoor swimming pool in the three acres of gardens to the rear, deliver country-house style in spades. As does the hotel’s plush lounges, with their ticking clocks, real fires and large-scale colonial-era, militaristic and sporting paintings. The 33 rooms very much continue the traditional country-house hotel look. www.thebathpriory.co.uk

KING STREET TOWN HOUSE, MANCHESTER

Tucked away on the city centre’s quiet Booth Street, it’s just a short walk from the hotel to the city’s main shopping areas, Manchester Art Gallery and the bars and restaurants of Spinningfields. The antithesis to a chain hotel, visiting King Street Townhouse is like staying with a rich friend who has extremely good taste. The infinity spa-pool on the seventh floor is the jewel in this hotel’s crown. The 40 rooms and suites are done out in muted blues, greens, greys and browns, with walk-in monsoon showers and free-standing baths in Cosy rooms and above. www.eclectichotels.co.uk/king-street-townhouse

OLD PARSONAGE HOTEL, OXFORD A path leads from the church towards the centre of town and is lined by proper old pubs and Oxford colleges with their emerald green quads accessed by tiny wooden doors. The Old Parsonage has one of the most successful ground floor public areas of any small hotel (its drawback being that to access the bedrooms you have to walk through the dining room). Through a pretty courtyard with large umbrellas for summer dining, and the original front door believed to date from 1660, you reach the reception hall, with original stone hearth and crackling fire. Then comes the bar and raised restaurant, lined by owner Jeremy Mogford’s eclectic collection of English portraits. www.oldparsonage-hotel.co.uk

ASHINGTON HAIR SALON INVESTS IN THE FUTURE Sublime Hairdressing expands into new premises

S

ublime Hairdressing Salon was purchased in 2012 by local entrepreneurs Adrienne Stewart and her daughter Chloe, initially located in rented premises at 150 Station Road, Ashington. They recently decided, with the business growing at such speed, the time was right to invest for the future. After searching for some time the perfect property became available, offering larger premises that would provide a better experience for all clients, both existing and new, and it was still within Ashington, located at 192 Hawthorn Road. In addition to local clients, the salon has many who travel from far and wide for the Sublime experience, from Jesmond, Whitley Bay and South Shields. The Sublime Team have worked extremely hard to develop the business in many areas including continuous training for all Stylists to ensure they are always up to speed with new products and techniques. Chloe is part of the Matrix Artistic Team and takes part in hair shows all over the North East and even travelled to Rome for part of her training recently. She is supported by her highly skilled team of Stylists, Eve Scullion, Corrie Dodds and Nina Haywood, who have all been so excited about the move to the new salon. Chloe says “the larger Salon also provides more space for our extremely popular Make Up by Eve

Hair by Corrie 12

Children’s Pamper Princess Parties which are a huge success”. Although the Team is trained in every aspect of hairdressing, each Stylist has their favourite areas of creativity: Chloe's is colouring and up dos, for which she has won an award. Eve loves colouring and is able to do spectacular make-up. Corrie is fantastic at creative hair up, while Nina is a superb gents barber and stylist. So, whatever the occasion, Prom, Wedding or evening out, the Sublime Team can help make it more special by helping you enjoy your event even before you get there with your perfect pamper preparation. Sublime is a massive supporter of the MacMillan Charity and hosts an event each year. However, last year they decided to host it for the whole week rather than just one day. This was made possible by very generous clients also baking cakes throughout the week in addition to the Stylists baking their own. Everyone had the opportunity to participate in a lovely

social week for a very special and worthy cause. So far Sublime has raised a total of £2,490.45 for MacMillan, and is looking forward to adding to this total by holding another MacMillan event this September. Chloe and her teams’ success is a true testament to their hard work, commitment and dedication to their clients since 2012. Check out Sublime's Facebook Page to see more beautiful creations by this Dynamic Team and for any Special Offers and lots of Competitions. Reiki treatment balances all aspects of self;

body, mind, emotions and spirit. It promotes and stimulates your innate, natural tendency towards wellness and aims to restore homeostasis (whole-body balance). As you become more balanced symptoms soften and you are better able to address any stressors in your life; through self-regulation and improved clarity, productivity at home and at work can increase as well as the ability to enhance relationships and communication skills. Reiki is safely used alongside other medical interventions as a holistic approach, where it will optimise the positive effects, relieve side effects and promote recovery. BENEFITS OF REIKI TREATMENT INCLUDE: • alleviation of anxiety which accompanies many conditions • promotes better sleep • pain management • accelerates the body’s natural healing ability • personal growth through connection with your inner source of meaning • detoxifies the body • encourages the release of emotions WHAT HAPPENS IN A REIKI TREATMENT? A Reiki treatment is an hour in duration and takes place in a private, comfortable and relaxing treatment room. During a treatment you will either lay comfortably on a treatment bed cocooned in a cosy blanket or if you prefer sitting in a chair. Relaxing music will be

played in the background. The lights will be dimmed to allow you to softly focus within. Once you are settled Lindsey places her hands in a series of positions on or close to your body which allows the Reiki energy to flow, starting on your shoulders, then the top of your head, your chest moving down the body to your feet. ITALIAN TREATS BY THE SEA Richard Wilson pays a visit to Links Art Gallery, a delightful cafe with lots on offer

O

n one of our many ‘blow the cobwebs’ morning walks along Whitley Bay beach, my wife and I decided to call in to Links Art Gallery for a satisfying breakfast and to set us up for our stroll. The Links Art Gallery is a unique art gallery and café located at Dukes Walk, Northern Promenade, Whitley Bay, ideally, situated between Whitley Bay town centre and St Mary’s Island. A ten minute wander along the beach will take you into the heart of Whitley Bay, or in the other direction to the historic and picturesque Saint Mary’s Lighthouse. The venue is home to a superb selection of art and gifts, all available to purchase, with the emphasis firmly on work by North East artists. We visited mid-morning on a Friday and there was a bustling atmosphere, with a number of tables and comfortable sofas already taken by couples and groups of friends. The walls are adorned with paintings, prints and photography from North East artists, and there is a fabulous selection of locally themed gifts. The café menu is heavily Italian influenced, with a good selection of ciabattas, salads and Focaccias, as well as Italian Breakfast specials, pancakes, soups and their extensive coffee and tea selections. I chose the Salsiccia, which is a toasted ciabatta with Cumberland sausage, caramelised onions and melted fontina cheese (a cheese I have never tasted before but am now a fan of!) whilst my wife opted for the Prosciutto, the Italian Stone Baked Focaccia filled with ham, emmenthal cheese and tomato.

Mine was a delicious fusion of flavours, extremely tasty and a real hearty filling – a definite thumbs up. My wife’s was fresh and packed with flavour, she particularly loved the fresh Italian bread. There is an appetizing choice of desserts, so it was an easy decision to try something sweet, but not as easy to select just one! After a lengthy deliberation I opted for the white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake, whilst the Cannoli Siciliani filled with sweet ricotta cheese caught my wife’s eye. Both desserts were fresh and light and set us up for our morning walk. The café menu also has an extensive range of coffees and teas, and they are proud to be associated with Bristot, a world leader in the production of exclusive coffee. In order to achieve this prestigious blend their experts set about conducting extensive and important botanical and agronomic research by revisiting the original blends’ countries of origin. The result is an exclusive coffee, unrivalled and with limited production. Before we left, we browsed the array of gifts and accessories as well as the excellent selection of greetings cards. Links Art Gallery is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee and a light snack whilst perusing, and possibly treating yourself to, some local art and gifts. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 28

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. TAKE A PEEK AT PACKHORSE YARD SET JUST OFF NEWGATE STREET IN THE HEART OF MORPETH, PACKHORSE YARD IS HOME TO A FINE SELECTION OF LOCAL INDEPENDENT RETAILERS.

D

avid Chambers and Les Sage are two of the five strong Packhorse Yard development team, they told us "We couldn't be happier with the public response to this development since opening in June last year. When we purchased the old warehouse and offices based on Newgate Street in the heart of Morpeth, we had exciting plans to offer unique and affordable opportunities to local independent retailers. We are extremely proud of what each business has achieved so far and love watching them grow from strength to strength as we approach our first anniversary. We hope that the award-winning Packhorse Yard continues to become a popular shopping destination for all visitors to Morpeth in the future." The yard is home to half a dozen units, all bringing something unique to the town. The first shop along the alleyway is an independent model shop owned by Jim and Joanne Ord, appropriately named J and J models, and in June 2017 the shop will be celebrating its first birthday in Packhorse Yard. Prior to opening their unit in the yard, they sold online and at specialist fairs, something they still continue to do. They sell a wide range of Model Railway Accessories, (Hornby, Bachmann etc) Kits, (Airfix, Pocketbond etc.) Humbrol paint and Die cast vehicles. They are always happy to source individual items for customers, and also buy good quality second hand items. Keep up to date with their latest news by signing up to their newsletter on their website at www.jandjmodels.co.uk, or follow them on facebook. The yard is also home to Willow Home & Gift, an independent, family run gift shop where you can discover a wide selection of affordable and unique gifts anything from a handmade piece of glassware to a gift for a mischievous mutt, they’ve got everything covered. The store is passionate about supporting UK designers/makers, and stock a variety of locally designed or produced products, so you are sure to find something a little different that won't break the bank either. If it is antiques you are interested in, make sure you pop in to Perriss Antiques, home to some wonderful antiques, jewellery, silverware and trinkets. There is a huge selection available, with new stock

arriving every day. Find them on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest arrivals. Finally, Lateral Art, owned by Stephen and Fiona Greenway, sells artists materials from great brands that are often hard to find on the high street, as well as a wide range of artist’s papers and decorative and wrapping papers. The art range is accompanied by notebooks and journals from Leuchtturm 1917, Moleskine and Fabriano as well as Frenchic Furniture Paints and Decopatch papers, models and glues. The store wants to support local artists and run a monthly art competition. Visit www.lateralart.co.uk for further details. In an extension to the shop, The Lateral Art Studio allows the pair to offer classes in drawing and watercolour in the heart of Morpeth. The Studio is compact and allows small groups to get maximum benefit from sessions. They hope to grow their range of courses and welcome other artists, who may want to deliver courses, to use the studio. During the week, for a small hourly charge, the space is made available to local artists who just need a space to work or even just browse through their selection of art and craft books for inspiration. On Saturdays, and during school holidays, the Studio is used to provide drop-in sessions for all ages to enjoy the range of Decopatch products that the shop sells, visitors just choose their model and then use the Studio and its range of papers and glues to create a unique item to take home, or of course they can buy the materials to take home. Lateral Art can also provide Decopatch birthday party sets to give a creative alternative to party activities. Contact Stephen or Fiona if you are interested in attending or running classes or using the Studio on info@lateralart.co.uk So, next time you are in Morpeth, make sure you make time to venture off Newgate Street and explore the wonderful, unique, independent businesses in this wonderful setting. THE JOY OF

SINGING

T

yneside A Cappella is a choir of women who enjoy singing popular songs in four part close harmony in the a cappella style (without accompaniment – just voices). The aim is to sing to the best of our ability and have a great deal of fun along the way. Musical Director Peter Jones is a very experienced director and vocal coach, who gets the best out of the choir with a mixture of hard work and fun which has resulted in a wonderful sound and high standard of singing from the 47 members. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at West Moor Community Association, from 7.30 – 10.00 p.m. The Centre has a large, free car park and is on a main bus route. The choir is a mix of singers with some previous experience and those who have never sung before, and who come from a wide background and age group – teachers, students, housewives, health service, local government, retail, business, hospitality, retired – who are brought together as friends to enjoy singing and also several social events organised through the year outside of rehearsals. The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. Many of the girls say how much better they feel at the end of the rehearsal, even when its been a tough day or life isn’t at its best, the joy of singing, the support of good friends and the magical experience of a group of people coming together and performing as one lifts the spirits.

36

Looking for a new hobby? Can you sing in tune, and are willing to learn? Read on! There is a song for everyone - Queen, Nat King Cole, Michael Buble; some Irving Berlin and some Beatles. Members pay £10 per month, and for that they receive music, teaching aids (teach track CDs/MP3s), performance outfits, excellent rehearsal facilities and support to learn how to sing to the best of their ability. None of the musical leadership receives any payment for their services – the choir is a team dedicated to musical enjoyment for all. New members are encouraged to learn at their own speed and become part of the performance ensemble when they and the Musical Director feel they are ready. There are no formal auditions, singers need to be able to sing in tune, hold their line, and be willing to learn.

The health benefits of singing are well publicised, and members of the chorus will confirm the “feelgood factor” of singing with like minded people and the buzz when it all comes together. The choir performs regularly throughout the year at a variety of venues including Newcastle Civic Centre, Seaton Delaval Hall, various local churches, Beamish Museum, The King’s Hall at Newcastle University and current plans are shaping up for an exciting weekend in Ireland in April 2018 to take part in the Bangor International Music Festival. HANDS ON FUN AT ROCKPOOL SCHOOL For an exciting way to learn about sea life, let your children pay a visit to Rockpool School.

B

est described as an attractive sea aquarium, a rockpool is an oasis at low tide for small sea-life creatures. Crabs, starfish, sea snails and many more marine species call rockpools home, and they are a fascinating environment to watch and study. Rockpools are an exciting way for children to learn about some of our sea life, but they can be quite hard to find. So, with this in mind, we are pleased to introduce you to a brand new Rockpool School, right here in the heart of the North East, allowing children to experience first-hand the wonderful creatures and sea life that call rockpools home. Rockpool School was establish in March 2017 by Nicola Everitt who, after seeing the pure joy and excitement on children's faces who live so close to the coast but never manage to experience rockpool animals first-hand, saw an ideal opportunity to give them that chance. She established the school (which is ran by locally qualified Marine Biologists) to give local children a hands on rockpool animal fun and learning experience, offering workshops, birthday parties and school visits. Nicola herself, has always been interested in our seas and everything within them, and regards herself extremely lucky to be in the process of completing her PhD in Marine Science. She has been very honoured to have been able to carry out cetacean research, offshore wind farm research and

40

possible impacts on surrounding marine life. She has also been able to work with, and train, both seals and sea lions. She is therefore very passionate to be able to share what she has learnt in a fun and educational manner. Sessions provided by Nicola are tailored to individual needs and workshop type, and include a variety of rockpool animals, including crabs, starfish, brittle stars, urchins, sea snails, hermit crabs and anemones. The individuals not only gain a hands on learning experience, they also learn amazing facts about these animals. She can tailor each workshop to every occasion, this may also include crafts, making of marine slime, crab lining, decorating treasure chests with sea glass and shells and many more. The school has already inspired many children to further their learning on this topic, with some even going on to attend Marine Biology Summer schools. The school has quickly earned a fantastic reputation, receiving 5 star rating from both schools and satisfied parents. Comments have included ‘very likely to recommend these session’, ‘very satisfied and would use the service again’, ‘children 100% benefit from the workshops’, ‘very pleasant staff and appropriate speak for the children's age’, ‘brilliantly interactive and hands on’. For more details about the school and upcoming events, visit www.rockpoolschool.co.uk or facebook.com/ rockpoolschool or call Nicola on 07704 336957.

HOME FROM HOME AT EOTHEN

In 2016 Eothen Homes, www.eothenhomes.org.uk, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home for people living with dementia. Here Ron Ward, whose wife Margaret is a resident there, tells us why the specialist Wallsend development is second to none. Tell us a little about you and Margaret and why you chose Eothen Homes for her care. Around seven years ago there was the first evidence Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her formal diagnosis came in 2012 and after this I became her carer for several years. In May 2015 Margaret needed a hospital stay. Following this it was clear she required specialist care so I spent time and energy looking for a suitable home. Unfortunately the home she went into was unable to cope with her various needs. Her lifestyle was very restrictive and her care inconsistent so much so that I used to take her out daily, sometimes all day to keep Margaret active and mentally stimulated. Thankfully at this time I was introduced to Judy Mattison, the manager at Eothen’s Wallsend development, who explained to me about its specialist care facility with its ‘butterfly approach’. This means the care workers respond to residents’ needs rather than follow a structured regime and it’s much more like living at home, just with 24 hour support and company as needed. Margaret moved in on its opening day and since then, we’ve never looked back. We have been incredibly pleased with her care. 42

What makes the actual Wallsend development different in terms of design? Eothen’s Wallsend site is a lovely place to live and spend time. The place has had a huge amount of thought put into it. Margaret is in one of four spacious households each with their own shared kitchen, dining and lounge area, which gives it a warm community feel. I spend a lot of time there and can easily go for a day and sit myself down in the Atrium with a book. In fact, I often volunteer time in the garden, helping to tend to the plants. The main thing is the amount of freedom that’s afforded to residents. Margaret was a PE teacher and needs mental and physical stimulation. From her room she can access the garden and walk round the expansive grounds in total security. She can also enjoy the Atrium when the weather’s poor and the various reminiscence areas and activities that take place. We also like the fact there is a Chapel on site so if Margaret or I wish to attend a service, we can do without the additional preparation that comes with taking her for a trip out, although we still go out and about, often to St Mary’s Lighthouse, very regularly.

What kind of care is provided? It’s possible to see what kind of care is provided from the warm welcome you get by staff on arrival. Margaret is very content and it’s not just down to the layout and atmosphere but the attention and time she gets from the team. There’s a real family feel and it’s very personalised so everyone gets exactly what they need. I know that if Margaret was ever sat on her own, someone would be across straight away to spend time with her, if that’s what she wanted. It’s a very special place and I only wish other homes would mirror their approach to care giving. What would you say to others about Eothen Homes Wallsend? When I was researching residential care homes there were more than 50 on the North Tyneside website and I must have looked at most of them. I didn’t come across one designed or run like this by Eothen. Eothen Homes Wallsend is a completely unique development that is well worth a visit in order to understand what it has to offer, not to mention the actual scale and quality of the home. If you or someone you love needs a residential care home, I’d definitely recommend taking a look and speaking to the team.

For more information, please contact Eothen’s Head Office on 0191 281 9100 or email enquiries@eothenhomes.org.uk

The wine cellar is always well-stocked, and features wines from around the globe (there are 53 en-suite rooms should you wish to turn your visit in to an extended stay!). We would definitely recommend volunteering for Hearing Dogs: your life will change for the better from day one!”
